Dominick A. “Dan” Petrolino, passedaway on February 19, 2012 at DominicanHospital. He was 83. Dan was born on Au-gust 25, 1928 in Long Island, New York,the son of Luigi and Ermalinda (d’Andria)Petrolino. He moved to New Jersey as ayoung child and after high school gradua-tion moved with his parents to California,settling in Mt View. Dan attended SantaClara University and served in the U.S.Army during the Korean War.A resident of Santa Cruz since 1963, heworked many years for Sylvania and laterfor G T E retiring in 1990. Dan loved base-ball and grew up going to Yankee Stadium.He continued to love the Yankees through-out his life. He spent summers going to theJersey shore and camping in the CatskillMountains.He was a devout member of Holy CrossChurch. He was also a member of theMarconi Club and the Italian Catholic Fed-eration. He spent many years deeply in-volved in the Italian Catholic Federation andhe served as Grand President of the ICFfrom 1990-1993. He traveled extensivelywith the ICF and through the organizationmet many dear and life- long friends.Dan is survived by his loving wife of 54years, Diana Petrolino; two daughters,Patricia McNeal and Cori Gabbert; son-in-law, Mike Gabbert; two grandchildren,Alyssa McNeal and Alexis McNeal; sister-in-law, Betty Del Chiaro and nephew, David

GRAND PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE(by Dan Petrolino, August 1991)My Dear Brothers and Sisters,Religious Climate: Are we, as an organi-zation, getting away from the original con-cepts of our faith, as was intended by ourfounders? Are we becoming too much asocial and political body? Are we readilyaccepting the disintegration of our moralstandards, and becoming too materialistic?Are we really getting involved in the so-cial issues of today?Economical Resources: Are we, as anorganization, truly contributing to the poorand other worthwhile issues accordingto our branch resources? Are our financialresources being used for the right causes?Do we place too much importance on ourfinances as the only way to serve people inneed?Membership: Do we get new members justfor the sake of collecting their dues ordo we try to gain membership for the sakeof strengthening their moral and religiousvalues? Are we looking for quantityor quality?Programs: In our monthly branch meet-ings, are we offering programs which areuseful for our religious and moral needs,or are our meetings the same drab business-like gathering, with no thought to our spiri-tual needs, but just to socialize?My dear friends, these questions are beingasked of us. The answer I can give, at thistime, is that we are only human, with ourimperfections, but neither is the Churchitself perfect. We have made mistakes,but we are trying to do our best. That is allanyone can ask of us. Our Apostolic/Char-ity program and other programs prove this.In the future, we will try to do better. If theclergy have some special ideas or programsthat can improve us, please let us know. Welook forward to their spiritual guidance.We accept constructive criticism, but wecould also use concrete suggestions or pro-grams to improve our spiritual life.I can say, that the Italian Catholic Federa-tion, is second to none when it comes tothe support of the Church and community

I am very happy to let you knowthat in my recent travels to Chi-cago I have found out that theArchdiocesan of Chicago has aDeaf/Hard of Hearing Program.The deaf community is coordinatedand supervised by Fr. JosephMulcrone, who is the director ofthe Archdiocesan Office of theDeaf.Every Sunday at 10:30am, HolyMass is celebrated in AmericanSign Language in the chapel.The community also holds signed biblestudy, catechetical instruction and seniorgroup meetings. In addition,the communityholds fundraisers and other events. One oftheir outreach efforts is collecting schoolsupplies for childen who have sufferedabuse.The Catholic deaf community has been atSt. Francis Borgia Parish in Chicago since

1983. Deaf people from all over the arch-diocese of Chicago, along with their fam-ily members, gather each week to worshipthere.In continuing with the works the Gifts ofLove Committee began in the San JoseDiocese, we are extending our support ofthe deaf program by now including the Arch-diocese of Chicago. We are excited to fol-low their progress!

During this Lenten season, I am remindedof all the dedicated ICF members who dontheir red and green aprons to prepare theirbranch Lenten Dinners. Preparations oftenbegin in early January, and much time andeffort is put in by the dinner coordinatorsand branch members to provide “restau-rant”-style meals for the six weeks of Lent.Not only do the various fish-frys and soupnights support the branches, but they arealso a time to bring members together andprovide an opportunity for the branches tointroduce parishioners and members of thecommunity to the ideals of the ICF, to thecharities it supports, and to the assistance

Some people, even close relatives andfriends, don’t speak to each other for yearson end. Grown children who played to-gether and lived in a happy home nurturedby parents become as strangers. Misunder-standings, accusations, and jealousies of-ten split families and long-time friends.They hold grudges about issues, whethertrue or not. They share these grudges withothers, thereby affecting the opinions andfriendships of those involved. They go toMass, pray to God, are involved in chari-table works, and are very good people.However, because of deep hurt feelings,they have a blind spot where the perceivedinjury and injustice just does not go away.This is, indeed, sad.The answer to this problem is simple, butcould be difficult to apply. Jesus said,“Love the Lord your God with all yourheart and with all your soul and with allyour mind. This is the first and greatest

commandment. And the second is like it:Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt.22:36-40) We do all this for the love ofGod. In Scripture, Jesus also said to hisdisciples: “Be merciful, just as your Fa-ther is merciful. Stop judging and you willnot be judged. Stop condemning and youwill not be condemned. Forgive and youwill be forgiven. Give and gifts willbe given to you: a good measure, packedtogether shaken down and overflowingwill be poured into your lap. For themeasure with which you measure willin return be measured out to you.”(Luke 6:16-18)When we pray, we ask God to forgive us,and not for one moment do we think he willnot forgive us. We know he loves us nomatter what. At the same time, we are notwilling to forgive others who injure us insome way. We cannot help how we feel,but we can intellectually make an act of thewill to forgive and to love. Jesus says wemust “love your enemies, do good to thosewho hate you, bless those who curse you,

pray for those who mistreat you.t” (Luke6:27) This is not easy to do. It takes a lotof effort. To love someone we do not likeis more valuable in the eyes of God than tolove someone we like. It takes little effortto love some we do like. Every time wepray the Our Father, we pray, “Forgive usour trespasses as we forgive those who tres-pass against us.” We need to practice whatwe pray. How can we expect God to for-give us if we are not willing to forgive oth-ers? Help us, Lord, we pray, to love asyou would want us to love!

ICF gives to the local parishes.Lenten dinners are a major fundraising op-portunity for all branches; but equally asimportant, are the chances they provide topromote ICF and increase membership.Learning about the good works done by ICFlocally and through the Gifts of Love andScholarship programs have moved manypeople to become new members. In myown Branch 227, Capitola, the fish fryshave made it possible to bring new mem-bers into the branch from parishes whereno branches exist.To those whose hard work makes theseLenten dinners possible, we thank you forhelping to grow the Federation and tospread the ideals of ICF. When and where did we first learn aboutgiving to charity? Remember when Momor Dad used to give us a few pennies or anickel to put into the collection basket atchurch? Then as we grew older and earnedmoney, we were expected to produce ourown money for the collection basket. Asyoungsters we saw the Salvation Army bellringers at the different stores and on streetcorners and we had to put money in theirred kettles. We gave to the March of Dimes,the Red Cross and it was all in the spirit ofcharitable giving. At Lent, we were encour-aged to drop coins in the little Lenten Giv-ing boxes that were for “the poor” who hadless to eat than we did.We were taught the money we gave wentto help others less fortunate and we neverthought of ourselves as poorer for it butricher for the experience of being able togive our little bit. We were also buildingup “Graces” but then it became a habit – a

good habit that we continue even today.When we joined the ICF we learned thatthis was a religious, charitable and socialorganization and the most important thingabout being a member of the ICF is beingable to give to the different charities. Fromour own Cooley’s Anemia, Gifts of Love,support of the seminarians, and the schol-arships to educate our youth; to the chari-ties on the local level such as our FoodBanks, Thanksgiving and Christmas Basketsfor less fortunate, and gifts to our churchand our religious; THIS is why I am a mem-ber of the Italian Catholic Federation.Let us never forget that we are servants ofGod and it is our obligation and duty to takecare of the less fortunate. When we be-came members of the Italian Catholic Fed-eration, it became our duty to do the bestthat we can with what we have; to becometireless workers in the vineyard of God. Aschairman of the Apostolate/Charities Com-mittee, I think we are doing a good job andI feel it is an honor to witness the gener-ous giving of our members to help others.

Our Apostolate Charity year began in Sep-tember 2011 and ends in August 2012.Your support and generosity to our Na-tional Charity, Cooley’s Anemia, has beenoverwhelming and I am proud to be asso-ciated with this program and with you whosupport it with your hearts and yourfundraisers.Each year, Oakland Children’s Hospitalsponsors several activities for the Cooley’sAnemia patients which they treat. The hos-pital has redesigned their program to bet-ter fit the needs of patients and families asthey deal with changing demographics andan aging population. Due to your gener-ous donations in the past, we have partici-pated as a sponsor for their wonderful pro-grams. Last year we were able to donate$1,500.00. This money is used to help witha Patient BBQ in July and a Teen/AdultWeekend Retreat in the Fall. There are alsosmall gatherings at the Day Hospital forwhen the children receive blood transfu-sions. This year we want to continue our

program whereby we offer them support,but we need to once again ask our Districts,Branches and Individual Members to takepart and send in donations. Did you know Easter eggs are specialeggs that are often given to celebrate Eas-ter or springtime? The oldest tradition isto use dyed or painted chicken eggs, but amodern custom is to substitute chocolateeggs or plastic eggs filled with jelly beans. The Portuguese call the Eas-ter loaf Folar Da Pascoa They arrange sixeggs on the loaf of bread covered them witha cross made of dough. As the name sug-gests this is the traditional Easter Bread.

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorderthat causes severe anemia. Patients withBeta-Thalassemia Major are required tohave routine blood transfusions every 2-4weeks. In one year, a person with Thalas-semia needs approximately 36-48 units ofblood to survive.

Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant isthe only known cure for patients withThalassemia. However it is not universalbecause a person needs an exact bone mar-

row match andthe procedure isinvasive and canbe fatal. A bonemarrow trans-plant recipientmay use 20 unitsof red bloodcells and 120units of platelets.

Hi, I am Rammeet Kaur,and I went to the PaintedTurtle Camp in the summerof 2010. My experience incamp was amazing and veryenjoyable. The PaintedTurtle Camp is its own spe-cial world. I did many funactivities, such as flyingthrough the air on a zip-line, singing songs near thecampfire, dancing underrainbows, eating spaghetti with no hands,fishing, boating, riding horses, practicingarchery, swimming, and much more. Wehad Stage Night to show off our talents, andwe even had Silly Olympics, where coun-selors and campers splatter each other withoatmeal, chocolate syrup, and other soft orliquid food that made us all get dirty.I made many friends at camp who are stillin touch with me. I will always remembersharing good time with them. We ate three

Twosons have Crohn’s Disease and one sonwith Down Syndrome.Dominic Zeppa was awarded $1,500 so hecan cover expenses of his IV infusion thathe received every 8 weeks. Dominic hasCrohn’s Disease and is currently in col-lege.Leslie Sepulveda was awarded $250 topersue a singing coach. Leslie has respira-tory papylomas which impede her abilityto breathe properly while singing. Herdream of a degree in church music.Maverick Hanecaks received $700 to at-tend Camp Krem in Boulder Creek, CA.This is a special camp for autistic childrenwhere he will received 1:1 care. Maverickhas autisim and ADHD.

Michael Elliott for Brian Elliott wasawarded $3,000 to help cover medicalexpnses, orthopedic dvices, special diet andwheelchair maintenance. Brian was bornwith DEIS. Has no abdominal wall and hisbladder is on the outside of his body. Hehas spina bifida and cannot sit or walk onhis own.Meghan Eileen Grafer received $500 to gotowards vision needs including eyeglassesand special eye drops. Meghan was bornwith congenital cataracts in both eyes andhas developed glaucoma and cornealedema.Tyler Vitiello was awarded $1,000 to helpcover therapy expenses. Tyler broke hisneck in November of 2011 while playingfootball. After hours of surgery and therapycan now walk again, but has lost feeling inportions of left side of body. He plans togo to college and get a degree as an ath-letic trainer.Michele Casari received $1,000 to pur-chase an iPad and apps to assist her clientsin their therapy. Michele is a developmen-tal therapist.

Thanks to generousdonors, the Painted Turtle is full of life.This camp gives kids with chronic illness achance to escape from the hospital and havefun just being a normal kid for a wholeweek. Going to this camp was an everlast-ing life experience which will be cherishedin my memory, because I learned a lot fromgroup involvement with my fellow camp-ers in all the activities I did.

The egg has long been a symbol of birth.We decorate eggs at Easter to remind usof Jesus’ rebirth. The egg is like the tomb,cold and hard, but containing life withinits shell. We color the outside of the shellas a sign that we believe in the life that isinside the shell.

Nonno, ashe referred to by family, joined the Italian Catho-lic Federation, Branch 111 at St. BenedictChurch in 1972 and has been a continuous mem-ber for 40 years. Because of his passion for theFederation, and all the good things it providesfor its members and the community, he was ableto have 3 generations of family members join.For several years Nonno took on the position ofCorrespondence Secretary and even though hewas not proficient in English, he managed to writeBranch articles to the ICF Bollettino providingupdates about our branch. San Pedro Branch 115 celebrated the Feast of San Giovan Giuseppe della Croce, native and patron saint of the island of Ischia with a Mass and a Crab Dinner-Dance. The Mass onMarch 5 was well attended and so as the Crab Dinner with 435 people attended. It took place in the Mary Star of the Sea Church Auditorium on March 3. The menu included antipasto,salad, linguine with clams, shrimps, crab, spumoni and wine plus music and dancing which was typical of a true Italian Feast. We had a Saint Joseph tablewith bread for sale, and a membership tabledecorated with artifacts from the branch mem-bers own heritage and ICF Calendars for sale.Live music was provided by the Audiogirls andWooden Nickel band, and the Long BeachYoung Adults group conducted the 50/50 raffle.Job well done!Monica Abbott

The first quarter of the year is behind us and welook forward to Easter and Spring. This Winterbrought sadness and loss as many old friendspassed away. Dan Petrolino, our longtime friendand mentor is gone. Though he moved up theladder of the Italian Catholic Federation, serv-ing as Grand President for 3 years, he was al-ways kind and humble. He was a strong sup-porter of Branch 51. When we were in discordand ready to fold, he came with ICF leaders tostrengthen and support us so we could carry on.He attended our meetings, bringing Edith, Diana,and Julie to build up our branch. With his help,we were able to continue. He will be missed.A recent trip to Marina to attend the Centennialof Monterey Co. Free Libraries, was a historylesson. Head librarian, Jayanti Addleman, rodein on a mule, simulating the first county librarianwho regularly rode a burro from Greenfield toBig Sur, toting books to the five public librariesshe had established. Books were delivered upand down the coast so people could becomeeducated. It was a great celebration with countyand state officials espousing the strength of ourseventeen county libraries and the educationbrought to our children and people of all ages.Our own Castroville Library was founded in1914 and will soon be celebrating 100 years. Ithas had a colorful history, serving our town inhomes, stores, fire station and post office. Wenow have a new library, highlight of our commu-nity, with many programs serving and educatingour youth. There are computers, meeting rooms,and the after school homework center wherestudents come daily. Our coordinator, SallyChilds, brings in college students each semesterto help students with their homework and serveas mentors to the town’s youth. Our library is aspecial place and we are proud of it. Branch 387 hosted the Installation of Officersfor the Branches in our District on February 18,at St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church in Ful-lerton. The events included a Mass, followed bythe Installation, and finally a delicious lunch atMarie Callender’s. It was a great opportunity tofellowship with all the officers of the differentbranches.Our first Casino Trip for the year was also heldin February, as well as our first CommunionBreakfast at the Elks Club in Fullerton. It wasso spiritually uplifting and emotionally fulfilling toattend Mass together as an ICF family, and par-take of the breakfast afterwards.Our Branch diligently planned the St. Joseph’sTable celebration on March 31 and April 1 un-der the very capable and efficient leadership ofour own Nina Visconti, with the participation ofmany other outstanding members of the Branch.February 26 was a very productive day for ourBranch. It started with a presentation by ourPresident Dolly Church at the 9:00am Mass, oftwo checks to St. Juliana’s Pastor Fr. FrankFalco. One of the checks was our contributionto the Building Fund; the second check repre-sented also our contribution to the School Edu-cation Fund. The day ended with our FebruaryGeneral Membership Meeting at 6:00pm. Themembers were treated by the Branch to a deli-cious home cooked meal, followed by the busi-ness portion of the meeting. who is suffering from pneumonia, with compli-cations to his lungs, reducing his breathing ca-pacity to less than 50%. The scrumptious meal, fabu-lous desserts and loving company created a greattime for all.Branch 217 made gracious donations toCooley’s Anemia Foundation, Blessing Center,Sacred Heart Academy and Mary’s table, andour contributions were recognized by our localnewspaper in a recent article.We have some activities planned for the upcom-ing months, one of which is a bus trip to PalaCasino on May 21, 2012.As many may know, The Holy Name of Jesuswill be building a new church. At the present time,we have two separate churches of worship, oneon Olive Avenue and the other on ColumbiaStreet, about a mile or so apart. We celebratenine Masses each weekend, many of which areback-to-back.We send out happy birthday wishes to our old-est and longest-serving member, Matt DiMaria,who turns 94 on March 30. We also send outbirthday wishes to our March babies, CarmenHynds and Verne White.

continually show up and do their job. It is a greatteam effort especially during the Lenten Seasonwhen every Friday is committed to the Fish Fry.Our customers know that they will get their foodhot and delicious and continue to come and bringfriends.Our “ Breakfast With Saint Joseph”, bake saleand raffle was also a great success. Again thanksgang, you are terrific. Not everyone is able towork serving, cooking etc., and so several ofthem baked and some brought guests to enjoyour delicious breakfast. It was a hectic and worth-while morning.At the meeting the membership voted to includea new charity,” Birth Choice of the Desert” willbe receiving some financial support from Branch303. It was also voted to continue “Get On theBus Program” and to fund one 3rd year schol-arship, a first year scholarship, and our share ofthe District scholarship. This year’s polenta dinner/dance was a hugesuccess. The morning of the dinner/dance the hallwas filled with activity as volunteers set up tables,decorated, and prepared food. The evening fes-tivities were made extra special by the deliciousdinner. Students from St. Frances Cabrini Schooland Religious Education did an excellent job serv-ing. The raffle baskets that Esther Ramonda andAldine Grisenti created were a big hit.A special “Thank you” to Fr. George Aranha forpresiding over the Day of Recollection at St.

Clare’s Parish on February 25. He spoke onPrayer, Fasting, Almsgiving and Repentance andhow Lent is a time for us to become closer toGod by silencing noise around us and lookingfor the beauty that God created.Members and their families have been invited toattend Palm Sunday breakfast on April 1 afterthe 8am Mass. Breakfast will consist of pancakes,sausage links, eggs, coffee, milk and orange juice.Children will have the opportunity to decorate abag which they will use for the Easter egg hunt.The Bocce court is being spruced up for theThursday night Bocce gatherings. St. Patrick was born inRoman Britain (she stated this might very wellmean he was Italian-LOL). He was captured andenslaved in Ireland and later escaped back toBritain. In Britain he was ordained, became aBishop, and returned to Ireland to minister tothe people of Ireland.

Our Valentine Dinner Dance went very well!Many thanks to all the members for their hardwork and dedication. The food, prime rib andfixings, had excellent reviews! The dessert, alemon cake, was also very popular. The bandplayed good music that caused many to get upand dance. The drinks were part of the ticketprice, so no liquor license was needed.The soup suppers are going along well. We havea good number of people coming for the Sta-tions of the Cross, and they enjoy having the soupsupper ready and waiting afterward.St. Patrick’s Day is almost here and we will beworking with the Altar Society, again, to put ona Corn Beef and Cabbage Dinner. One of ourown members, Dan Darby, has been asked bythe Altar Society to do the cooking. I know itwill be a delicious meal!Bishop’s Burse Dinner is May 25 for our Stock-ton District, and we are looking forward to see-ing many of our sister branch members there.To top off this busy month, our branch has beeninvited to join others in a clean-up day at St.Patrick’s in Angels Camp on March 31. Our Lady of the Valley, Br. 425Greetings from Sunny Arizona,Well our St Joseph’s Table was a little disap-pointing. We didn’t have the turn out that wehoped for. The donations were good though, wedid give the Food Bank three hundred dollar,(picture above.)As I mentioned last month we tried something

different to get new members, we had a free din-ner meeting for prospective members. Well itworked; we installed 9 new members at our lastmeeting, (picture above.) By the way we enjoyeda very good corn beef and cabbage dinner tocelebrate St Patrice’s day cooked by new mem-bers Ed and Sue Simms.Our cookie sale was another great success.This month we will take our annul trip to St Davidto visit the mission there, go to Mass in their smallchurch and have delicious dinner with the priest.We give them a generous donation, which they

really appreciate. They also like the wine wedonate.Next mouth we will have our annual picnic inMadera Canyon. We have a great covered pic-nic area with large barbeques, were we will makeour hamburgers, sausages and all the memberswe bring goodies that go with a picnic. Hello ICF! Spring has made its way to Arizonaand it is beautiful! Our group here in Tucson justhosted a bake sale last weekend in 80-degreeweather. So much food was made and every-thing was delicious. There were biscotti, cook-ies, brownies, bread rolls, brownie & cookiebites, and several different types of loaf cakes.We sold on a Saturday evening after Mass andagain after Sunday morning Mass. Consideringit is Lent and some of us (myself included) havegiven up eating chocolate, we managed to sellevery last bit and made $550.00! God is goodand we wish you all a blessed spring!
