Librarians Retailers:

You’ve asked, and we’ve listened! As superhero storytelling has exploded in popularity in recent years, and both children’s publishing and graphic novels have shown unparalleled growth, we have created our very first imprints dedicated to storytelling for kids! DC Books for Young Readers brings the iconic superheroes of DC Entertainment to graphic novels for middle-grade and young adult readers.

With world-class authors lending their expertise to brand-new standalone stories featuring the characters we know and love, these graphic novels will appeal to DC fans new and old.

DC Zoom targets ages 8–12 with stories that focus on external issues, helping readers explore and understand the world around them. Librarians tell us that DC titles are a great tool to engage reluctant young readers, and DC Zoom makes our characters accessible with new out-of-continuity stories by their favorite authors.

DC Ink is for readers 13 and up, and features coming-of-age stories that encourage teens to ask themselves who they are and how they relate to others. DC Ink features storytelling that focuses on real-world situations and relatablecharacters who are not perfect, but are nuanced and complex—just like our readers.

Happy reading!

Q: What’s your new book about?

ART: Our new book is about a young Clark Kent as a freshman in high school. He’s 14 years old and the only person he knows is Lana Lang—he’s the new kid. He’s Superman, of course, but his parents warn him to be careful not to reveal his secret identity. He runs into all the things normal high schoolers run into—the lunchroom bully, all that stuff.

FRANCO: Everyone in Smallville will find out that Superman is there. All the tribulations of having to deal with going to school will be included. There will be this club where kids go out looking for extraterrestrials, so there’s a lot of fun stuff in the book.

ART: It’s also Lex Luthor’s first time in public school because all throughout his previous academics he was homeschooled. He’s the rich kid from the other side of town and he is REAL smart, and he meets Clark Kent for the first time. It’s gonna be awesome.

Q: Have you always been a DC fan?

FRANCO: Yes, I’ve always been a real big DC fan. When I was growing up, my parents were always working, so I would go with them as they went to go work in restaurants. There was a corner drugstore, and I would get some money in the afternoon to go down and buy as many Superman, Batman and Teen Titans comics as I could. I would always draw them in my free time when I wasn’t reading them. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been a DC fan.

ART: I’ve been a DC fan since I was a little kid; I used to get those comics from this little Polish deli down the street. That was my first exposure to Aquaman and Green Arrow and Black Canary, and I eventually moved on to the Super Friends cartoons. That interest led to Superman: The Movie, which made me want all of the SUPERMAN comics. I’ve been reading since I was six years old. I had maybe two years where I had to learn to walk and talk and stuff, but then it was DC Comics.

Q: What’s your new book about?

MICHAEL: My new book is Dear Justice League. It’s basically an introduction to these characters for younger readers in a really relatable way. Sort of the classic lineup: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, I threw in Hawkgirl because I’ve always really liked her, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Aquaman. The premise is: young fans write to their heroes to ask for advice or just because they have something they want to tell them. The heroes respond with stories from their own lives, maybe an embarrassing story of when that happened to them as a kid. It’s a way to show these heroes when their defenses are down.

Q: HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO WORK WITH DC?

MICHAEL: I am SUPER excited to be working with DC. The opportunity to write these iconic charac-ters that I grew up on has been amazing. I’ve always been a comic book guy. When I was a kid, I lived in a very small town and the closest comic book store was in Touring, Connecticut. My mother threw my comics away, so my brother and I would pore through the boxes there. So now that I’m not only a proud comic book nerd but also a professional comic book nerd is super exciting for me. DC has been just fantastic. The thing I like best about this project is that there is a lot of latitude in how we present these characters. Whatever we think works best to tell the story and to get young readers into this story has been fantastic. They’ve been so flexible, but at the same time, just the opportunity to work with these iconic characters has been amazing.

Q: What’s your new book about?

DEREK: Our new book is about Gotham but in a sort of fantasy setting. We’re taking the popular fairy tales and weaving the DC characters within them. So we have Damian Wayne envisioning himself as Pinocchio, and trying to become like his father, Batman. He doesn’t just want to be a real Boy Wonder, he wants to be like his dad. And we have a “Princess and the Pea” story, with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, as well as an “Alfred in Wonderland” story. This story has Alfred going into Wonderland with the Mad Hatter trying to save the rest of his Bat-Family in there. There’s a Snow Queen story with Batman out in the worst blizzard in Gotham history trying to find someone out in the snow.

DUSTIN: What he said.

Q: Have you always been a DC fan?

DEREK: I grew up reading a lot of comics as a kid, but I never got into DC until much later. It wasn’t until Batman: The Animated Series that I got into DC, and then from there I picked up a lot of DC Comics.

DUSTIN: I’ve always been a DC fan. My first dip into comics was a Batman sampler. It’s really hard for me to draw anything else. Working with Batman, he has an expanded universe with the rest of the Gotham characters, which made it really easy to like and experiment with other characters. It made working on Li’l Gotham really great.

Q: What’s your new book about?

MINH: My new book is called GREEN LANTERN: LEGACY—it’s about a grandmother who passes away and her jade ring gets mysteriously transferred to her grandson. The grandson discovers that his grand-mother had been a superhero for most of her life. He discovers her story while coming to terms with this new, awesome power and the responsibility that comes with that. It’s very much a family story. For me, it’s a great opportunity to pay tribute to grandmothers; they were the heroes in my life.

Q: Have you always been a DC fan?

MINH: I’ve been a fan of comics for a very long time. I spent a lot of my junior high years trying to sketch comics, but my art skills never evolved to where they needed to be. But I love comics, I love DC. I grew up on Greek mythology, fairy tales—and folktales and comics, to me, are kind of like that new mythology. When you see the pop culture I think it makes sense. I’m really excited to be a part of that mythology now.
