After arriving in NYC in 1932, already well known, prestige dates followed the Nicholas Brothers through the thirties: Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds in London (1936), the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, and the Broadway show Babes in Arms (1937) where their choreographer was Ballanchine.

Life Forms was created at Simon Frasier University, British Columbia, Canada beginning in 1986. The Life Forms software portrayed outlines of the human gure in a three-dimensional space. The computerized gures had movable joints, and could be made to do all kinds of movements, including spins, jumps, leaps, reaches, and bends.

“It seems clear that electronic technology has given us anew way to look. Dances can be made on computers ,pictures can be punched out on them, why not a notationfor dance that is immediately visual?”

(Merce Cunningham, Notes on Dance, 1968)

The rst known use of computers in the creation of a choreography occurred in 1964 when Jeanne Beaman and Paul Le Vasseur at theUni-versity of Pittsburgh used a computer to gener-ate random, performable dance sequences.
