Today's Game

Wildcats Host Loggers in Homecoming Game Central Washington, which played nationally-ranked teams three con

secutive weeks earlier this season, plays a winless team for the second week in a row today when it hosts the University of Puget Sound in its annual Homecoming game.

Last Saturday the Wildcats defeated Whitworth 54-21, handing the Pirates their 13th consecutive defeat over the past two seasons. Puget Sound brings a 0-5-1 record into the contest and hasn't won a game since beating Whitworth last October.

The Loggers gained their tie three weeks ago against Western Oregon, battling to a 21-21 standoff. They've lost to Southern Oregon, Lewis & Clark, Eastern Oregon, Simon Fraser and Western Washington.

CWU coach Jeff Zenisek is confident his team can keep their momentum, which has resulted in five wins in six games and a sixth-place national ranking. Still , he is concerned about today's game.

"UPS has some good athletes on offense," Zenisek said. "Their quarterback (Chris Schlecht) runs the option pretty well and they have two good running backs in Aaron McCoy and Justin Olson (Fr., Enumclaw). Everyone was trying to recruit Olson last year," Zenisek said.

Defensively, the Loggers are pretty active. "They like to blitz a lot and they'll create some problems for our offensive line," Zenisek said.

UPS' best defensive weapon may be punter Todd Cooley, who is leading the nation for the second year in a row. Cooley (41 .9) and CWU's Jason Carter (40.1) rank 1-2 in the CFA in punting and rank first and fourth, respectively, nationally.

yard rushing games to six, one short of the school mark set by Corky Bridges in 1958 and equaled by Pat Patterson in 1989. Jones ranks second in the CFA in rushing with 808 yards.

Kitna ranks second in the CFA in passing (1823) and total offense (1896). Jones is third in all-purpose running (1022) and fifth in scoring (48).

He also had a second and third place finish in the 880 yards in the NAIA National Indoor meet in 1967 and 1966, respectively .

Sports Sponsorship Program Begins Second Vear Central Washington University's sports sponsorship program is in its second year. A total of 18 businesses have signed up for the 1993-94 sports season

and will contribute $76,000 in cash and in-kind services to the university. Businesses receive exposure with signs and P.A. announcements in addition to program and television and radio advertising. Game sponsorships are also

available. The program is broken down into four levels on investment. Investment packages begin at $10,000 and are also available at $5,000, $2,500 and $1 ,000. The program is under the direction of Bruce

Walker, CWU's Athletic Promotions Director. The Dave Bean Agency also played a major role in kicking off the program last year. One of last year's promotions was a contest in

which contestants guessed the number of basketball that would fit in a car donated by Eastside Jeep Eagle in Bellevue with the winner receiving the vehicle. Roger Boyd of Ellensburg (pictured along with Walker) was the lucky fan. The sponsorship program is just one way you

can give a boost to your favorite team at CWU. And with looming cutbacks in support of higher education, your help is needed now more than ever. You can also help by joining the CWU Booster

Club. Levels of membership include the Athletic Director's Circle, Red & Black Cub, Head Coach and Assistant Coach. There are many benefits to joining including

invitations to special events, reserve parking, program recognition and newsletters. Contact Walker at 963-1952 or interim athletic director Jeff Zenisek at 963-1911.

The NAIA - Providing Balanced Athletics Programs for More

Than 65,000 Student·Athletes OVERVIEW

.. -• hroughout its history, the National Association oflntercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong

leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship

basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate

athletics programs.

Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day- be it racial

integration in the' 40s and '50s or establishing the first women's championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not

been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited.

In the past decade, presidents of the NAIA colleges and universities have assumed a position of responsible

leadership. The NAIA's Council of Presidents, the organization's primary governing body, is comprised of32 college

and university presidents from all regions of the United States.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen

academic eligibility requirements in the mid-'80s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain

grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other

associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The All-America Scholar-Athlete program, a long-standing NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior

student-athletes with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a

4.0 scale). This past year, over 700 NAIA student-athletes were

so honored, representing 225 member institutions.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletics

programs and championships in proper balance with the

overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher

education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not

take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust -

a relationship strengthened year after year. The future of

65,000 young people is too important to handle any other way.
