DESIGN NOTESType design notes here.

equIPmentjouRnAL.com @equIPjouRnAL

A close friend of mine re-cently walked off the jobsite, alongside an entire crew of electricians.

Like so many other work-places around the world, the issue stemmed from fears of COVID-19.

However, the problem at the residential build in To-ronto wasn’t a direct lack of effort on the contractor’s part.

The issue was another crew on site that refused to take the threat of the grow-ing pandemic seriously, mixed with a lack of enforce-ment of social distancing.

Rather than follow the advice provided by pretty much every health pro-fessional in the world, the irresponsible crew basically decided that social distan-cing is a joke, instead of a new reality.

In response, my friend’s boss decided walking off the job was the best course of action for his employee’s wellbeing.

Unfortunately, failure to comprehend the severe risk posed by the coronavirus isn’t isolated to this one project.

You’ve likely seen the

now-viral video of Jack Da Silva, a LiUNA representa-tive from Local 183, address his fellow workers at another condo development in To-ronto.

“If I lose my job, I lose my job. … I’ve got an 86-year-old at home on oxygen. My wife is crying every time I go home because she doesn’t know if I’m going to kill her father if I have something,” Da Silva said.

“When you’re in the work-site there, you guys don’t have six feet around you. We’re all breathing on each other. Where’s your eating facilities? Are they sani-tized? Do you have water to wash your hands when you eat your sandwiches?”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also noted subpar hy-giene practices during the pandemic.

“On large construction sites downtown, they’ve showed me, they have out-houses overflowing and don’t have proper sanitary items,” Ford said. “Get your act together. Take care of your frontline construction workers.”

I know it’s easy for me to sit in my naturally-isolated

home office with running water and preach the im-portance of hygiene and social distancing.

I also understand that arranging the appropriate PPE and sanitary facilities during a global pandemic is an insurmountable task, let alone trying to enforce a 2 metre barrier around every person onsite.

However, regardless of difficulty, now is not a time to cut corners or make due with what is available.

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

This is particularly true when a cure has yet to be discovered.

ConExpo attendees were able to get a glimpse of Doosan’s largest excavator as well as a concept hybrid wheel loader.

T h e n e w D o o s a n DX800LC-7 crawler excav-ator was shown for the first time in North America dur-ing the trade show in Las Vegas.

Paired with a 4.7 cubic metre bucket at ConExpo, the excavator is the biggest model in the company’s ex-cavator line up.

The DX800LC-7 excavator

is designed to serve custom-ers in mining applications, removing overburden and loading large amounts of material into articulated dump trucks or rigid frame trucks.

The DX800LC-7 may also be operated on large con-struction sites — particularly at infrastructure jobsites — where a massive amount of material must be excavated and stockpiled or loaded into trucks to be moved.

A removable counter-weight is available as an

option and is ideal when the machine requires trans-portation between sites.

With its extension line of excavators, Doosan offers machines from 3.5 tonnes to 80 tonnes to serve a wide spectrum of customer needs and applications.

The Tier 4-compliant DX800LC-7 is scheduled to be available in North Amer-ica in late 2020.

Additional information will be distributed when the machine is available in North America.

Doosan hybrid wheel loader A prototype hybrid of the

Doosan DL200-5 wheel load-er — simply designated as DL Hybrid — was also shown for the first time in North Amer-ica during ConExpo. While a release date has yet to be announced, hybrid model configurations of the wheel loader could be available in North America as early as 2023.

Doosan is developing the hybrid powertrain to offer the same size wheel loader with additional fuel savings

from combining diesel and electric power sources.

The electric motor and diesel engine work in tandem to provide the same level of torque and output as a larger diesel-only engine.

The standard DL200-5 wheel loader features an 11,700 kg operating capacity, 413 foot-pounds of torque and an engine that provides 142 hp at 2,200 rpm, with a 2 cubic metre bucket capacity.

Doosan designed the hy-brid machine with a smaller diesel engine than what is

used in the standard model today.

However, there is no no-ticeable difference in the wheel loader’s performance.

In addition to offering fuel savings from its hybrid de-sign, the powertrain could be an option for custom-ers working in sensitive areas where environmental concerns are greater than normal.

Doosan may apply similar hybrid technology to addi-tional wheel loader models in the future.

Doosan offers sneak peek of its largest excavator, and hybrid wheel loader

Kubota Engine America has entered into a new size class with the introduction of the S7509, a high-power density, 300 hp engine.

The new large displace-ment industrial diesel engine, an addition to Kubota’s 09 Series was announced by Kubota Corporation at the company’s headquarters in Japan. The engine prototype was displayed at ConExpo in March.

“Kubota integrates state-of-the-art design to produce high performance and durability in all of our engines and the S7509 will be no exception,” said Tomokazu Matsushita, president of Kubota Engine America. “The S7509 will fur-ther expand the 09 series and Kubota’s goal is to become the Number 1 supplier of engines up to 300 hp.”

The compact 7.5 litre, 6-cylinder engine possesses low fuel consumption with its optimized, direct injection combustion system.

It provides 100 per cent power take-off at the flywheel and fan side, as well as selec-tion of flywheel housing and flywheel for OEM coupling.

As well, the S7509 provides great versatility as the exhaust side auxiliary PTO takes up to two hydraulic pumps, in

addition to the intake side PTO. The engine also features one-side easy maintenance and automatic belt tensioner. Mass production of the S7509 is expected to begin in 2023.

At ConExpo, Kubota En-gine America also featured a prototype of its Micro-Hy-brid System. The Kubota’s Micro-Hybrid System pro-vides power assistance instantaneously during peak overloads to the engine pro-viding an additional electrical power boost of up to 10 kW.

The immediate torque available offers an efficiency boost at the most crucial times, while recuperating and recharging its battery pack when not initiated.

Kubota first demonstrated the hybrid concept at Inter-mat in France in 2018. In 2019, at bauma, Kubota displayed the prototype system installed in a forklift.

The Micro-Hybrid System started with a 1.8 litre engine and now it has expanded to a larger 3.3 litre engine. The peripheral key components, such as DC-DC converter and 48 volt lithium ion battery have also been enhanced.

“Kubota’s Micro-Hybrid System allows for engine downsizing, yet maintains performance, productivity

and efficiency,” Matsushita said. “The enhancement of the lineup will provide bene-fits to more OEM customers and equipment users.”

In addition to the engine prototypes, Kubota Engine America also launched its service mobile application at ConExpo 2020. The app can connect users to an en-gine service dealer, while also providing product registration and a knowledge centre with resources on maintenance schedules, operation manuals and warranty information.

In the United Kingdom, JCB is poised to begin production at a factory that previously closed as a result of the cor-onavirus crisis. However, now the equip-ment factory will join the global effort to manufacture ventilators.

JCB received a direct ap-peal from UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in March to help plug the national venti-lator shortage and to help save lives of COVID-19 pa-tients.

Following the request, JCB Chairman Lord Bam-ford promised to help in any way the company could and immediately mobilized a re-search and engineering team to examine potential ways to assist.

Instead of making cabs for JCB equipment, the JCB fac-tory in the UK, which closed for 2 weeks due to the virus,

is being mobilized to make special steel housings for a brand-new design of venti-lator from Dyson.

A minimum of 10,000 of the JCB housings are earmarked for manufacture once Dyson receives regulatory approval for its design.

The first prototypes of the housings have been delivered to Dyson after rolling off the production line at JCB’s $62 million Cab Systems factory in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, which Boris Johnson visited during his election campaign.

The factory fell silent on March 18th along with eight other JCB UK manufacturing plants after a fall in demand caused by COVID-19. Mass production of the housings could start in a matter of days.

“ W h e n w e w e r e a p -proached by the Prime Minister we were deter-mined, as a British company,

to help in any way we could,” Bamford said.

“This project has gone from design to production in just a matter of days and I am delighted that we have been

able to deploy the skills of our talented engineering, de-sign and fabrication teams so quickly at a time of national crisis. This is also a global crisis, of course, and we

will naturally help with the production of more hous-ings if these ventilators are eventually required by other countries.”

JCB’s response to the call to

action would see the return to work for around 50 employ-ees in the United Kingdom, affected by an extended com-pany shutdown announced in late March.

Caterpillar has redesigned its D7 series dozer to be closer in produc-tivity to the D8.

At 265 hp, and an operating weight of 29,776 kg, the new D7 dozer replaces the D7E. The new high drive machine weighs-in with about 1,800 more kilograms, an additional 30 hp and a 10 per cent larger blade.

“All of that is going to help us get a little bit more productivity out of this dozer, and be a little bit closer to the D8 in terms of its capabilities,” said Sam Meeker, Caterpillar’s product application specialist for dozers.

“In the past, the D7E was a little bit too close to the D6. So, when we brought that D6XE out, we wanted to bring out the new D7 and bump it up a little bit on our chart.”

The upgrades allow the D7 to move up to 8 per cent more material per hour than the D7E.

Better balanceThe elevated sprocket under-

carriage delivers better ride and balance, as well as increased pene-tration force.

When designing the high drive dozer, Cat placed the engine and the transmission lower on the frame to improve stability.

“We positioned the roller frame where we need to in relation to the sprocket,” Meeker said. “On a big dozer like this, you spend a lot of time doing heavy cut work. So, you need a lot of weight on the front end.”

Like the D6 and D8T, the new D7 is driven by a fully automatic 4-speed transmission. The transmission continuously adjusts for maximum efficiency and power to the ground without added operator input.

In the cab, operators will find more space, multiple seat and con-trol adjustments for optimal comfort and an easy-to-use 25 cm touch-screen operator interface.

A standard high definition rear-view camera shows prominently in the main display.

“This is going to be the same cab we have on the D5 and the D6,” Meeker said.

“All of that commonality is nice on the jobsite for operators that are going to jump back and forth between machines.”

D7 tech options The D7 leads the industry in

technology offerings, according to Cat. For example, Slope Indi-cate is standard with the premium display package, showing machine main fall and cross-slope for easy reference.

As well, ARO with Assist is a grade-ready option bundled with basic blade control and a new set of assist features that work in the background to help operators get more done in less time.

“This tractor does get the full gamut of technology. We’re excit-ed to bring that to market,” Meeker said.

The D7 dozer is also available with:

· Cat Grade with Slope Assist provides basic blade position-ing assistance without added hardware or a GPS signal. The updated main display makes the system intuitive and easy to use.

· Factory Attachment Ready Op-tion (ARO) provides optimal mounting locations, brackets and hardware, and simplifies in-stallation of any brand of grade control system.

· Blade Load Monitor gives re-al-time feedback on current versus optimal blade load to help optimize blade capacity.

· Stable Blade works seamlessly with operator blade inputs for smoother surfaces.

· Traction Control automatically reduces track slip to save time, fuel and track wear.

· AutoCarry automates blade lift to help you maintain consistent blade load and help reduce track slip.

Cat Grade with 3D may also be factory integrated.

Advanced Inertial Measuring Units (IMU) provide greater speed and accuracy without position sensing cylinders.

As well, small antennas are inte-grated into the cab roof for better protection and GPS receivers are mounted inside so they can be secured by locking the cab doors. A 25 cm Grade operator interface works like a smartphone, making it easy for operators to learn the system.

Remote readyThe D7 is remote control ready

from the factory. Internal compon-ents are integrated into machine systems and an external connector that allows dealer installation of a plug-and-play roof-mounted re-mote-control unit.

Cat Command for Dozing offers line-of-sight (LOS) control using an over-the-shoulder console, or a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) option using the Cat Command Station to run the machine remotely.

D7 telematicsCat Link telematics technology

helps take the complexity out of managing jobsites by gathering

data generated by equipment, ma-terials and people.

· Product Link collects data automatically from equipment assets – of any type and any brand – which can be viewed online through web and mobile applications.

· VisionLink allows access to information at anytime from anywhere.

· The Cat App helps manage assets – at any time –from a smartphone.

· Remote Troubleshoot allows a Cat dealer to perform diagnostic testing remotely. Remote Flash updates on-board software without a technician present, potentially reducing update time by as much as 50 per cent.

· Application Profile and Oper-ator ID help save time by saving preferred machine settings.

· For machine security, Passcode provides an optional additional level of security by requiring an operator to enter an ID before the machine will start.

The D7 is available in Standard or Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configurations, with a variety of

blade and track shoe choices to optimize the machine for the in-tended application.

The D7 can also be ordered with specialized guarding to take on the challenges of waste, landfill, forestry or land clearing.

In addition to machine protec-tion against impacts and airborne debris, the specialty dozers can be ordered with an impact-resistant cab, application-specific undercar-riage and a specialty blade.

Building on the base ma-chine platform of their predecessors, Caterpillar has introduced the new D1, D2 and D3 next generation small dozers.

The D1, D2 and D3 next gen dozers replace the D3K2, D4K2 and D5K2, respective-ly, and the new series offers the same specialty model options as previous versions.

The new dozers feature styling changes, technology enhancements and a new low-emission, fuel-efficient engine.

The dozers now include a new lower sloping hood line that improves visibility to the peripheral view and blade’s cutting edge to in-crease finish grade efficiency.

“With the new D1, D2 and D3, you have a lot better visibility and the operator is able to see a lot closer to the machine,” said Joel Fritts, dozer market professional for Caterpillar.

“The operator can see exactly what’s going on in front of them.”

The D1 features an operat-ing weight of 8,274 to 8,342 kg, with 80 hp and a blade capacity of 1.52 to 1.66 cubic metres.

The D2 delivers a blade capacity of 1.85 to 1.98 cubic metres, 92 hp and an operat-ing weight of 8,319 to 8,627 kg.

As the largest of the three new dozers, the D3 weighs 9,217 to 9,593 kg, with 104 hp and a blade capacity of 2.19 to 2.34 cubic metres.

All three of the next gen small dozers are powered by the Cat C3.6 diesel engine,

which meets Tier 4 Final and Stage 5 emission standards.

The dozers’ large, hinged door has been moved to the right-hand side of the new machines, and provides easy engine service access to all regular engine maintenance points.

While offering the same net power ratings as their previous counterpart mod-els, the small dozers deliver up to 10 per cent improved fuel economy.

Eco mode, available in forward/reverse or reverse only options, improves fuel economy by automatically reducing engine speed. When load changes neces-sitate higher engine rpm, Eco mode automatically allows the engine to deliver max-imum speed and power until the load decreases.

Tech heavyA 25-cm primary display

with colour touchscreen pro-vides access to many of the standard and optional ad-vanced technology features.

Reducing track slip when the machine encounters maximum load for greater productivity of each cycle, standard Automatic Traction Control no longer requires operator interaction.

Slope Indicate improves operator confidence when working on slopes by provid-ing slope of the chassis in the cross-slope direction with-out guessing. As well, Stable Blade complements operator blade control input, allowing the operator to finish grade easier, quicker and with less effort.

Available as part of the Cat attachment ready option (ARO) for easy scalability to Grade with 3D control systems, Slope Assist saves time by helping the oper-ator to more easily achieve the desired blade mainfall slope and cross slope by automatically maintaining the operator’s established blade grade angles.

“Slope Assist has been huge for us. It’s a grade con-trol solution that helps the customer get started in grade control without having to have the more expensive off

board reference systems,” Fritts said.

power pitchThe small dozers’ Power

Pitch option enables the operator to control blade pitch remotely from the operator’s compartment to optimize blade pitch for blade loading, optimizing machine productivity by up to 6 per cent.

“We have got an awful lot of technology on these ma-chines that allows us to do great things and the oper-ator can be very productive

with that,” Fritts said. “We are working hard to make it easier for the operator to use the technology.”

A host of optional features helps the customer to opti-mize engine operation, based on operating conditions.

The available turbine type precleaner increases engine air filter life when working in excessive debris conditions.

An automatic reversing fan reduces debris build-up in the radiator and engine enclosure by reversing fan direction at predetermined intervals, without the need

for operator input. Access to the radiator

without tools for periodic cleaning is facilitated by the hinged radiator grille option.

The next gen small dozers are available in standard and low ground pressure under-carriage configurations.

The XL designation will no longer be used with the new series.

The LGP 76 cm track will be offered for the D1 and D3 models to improve traction and flotation in exceedingly marginal underground con-ditions.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) is look-ing to help hospitals ensure they are well-equipped to

face the COVID-19 pan-demic.

As Canada’s health care professionals prepare for the anticipated surge of COVID-19 patients, the lim-ited inventory of personal protective equipment is be-coming a growing concern.

In response to requests from hospitals from across Canada, the CCA is asking their provincial and local association partners to reach out to their members to col-lect and donate important protective equipment, if they have not already done so.

The in-demand equip-ment includes some that are routinely used in construc-tion, including N95-rated, or higher, masks and eye protection.

“Construction has been, and will continue to be, a significant contributor to our communities,” said Mary Van Buren, CCA president. “At #CDNConstruction-Gives, there are hundreds of examples of how our member firms and their employees make a differ-ence. From food banks and scholarships to pet shelters and everything in between, we are there for our com-munities.”

As well, the CCA has been in contact with the federal gov-ernment to offer assistance at a national level as Canada manages the COVID-19 crisis.

CCA has asked each of its partner associations to reach out to their local hospitals and health authorities, if they have not done so already, to inquire about how they can help during this crisis.

For detailed product in-formation on items needed please refer to the Manda-tory Technical Specifications for Ventilators and Product Specifications for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

For more information on where construction com-panies are able to make a donation, contact local con-struction associations directly.

A c r o s s C a n a d a , t h e Canadian Construction Asso-ciation represents more than 20,000 member firms drawn from 63 local and provincial integrated partner associ-ations.

The CCA gives voice to the public policy, legal and stan-dards development goals of contractors, suppliers and allied business professionals working in, or with, Canada’s non-residential construction industry.

When the 830 M-T log hand-ler reached the end of its six year lease term with 22,000 service hours, Stella-Jones Inc.’s, plant manager Darrin Vigue did his due diligence to find its replacement.

But in the end, Vigue re-turned to the machine that had served him well for the previous six years.

“We considered other makes, including two of the industry’s top OEMs,” Vigue said. “But there were real-ly no other options for us. The Sennebogen is a good machine; everyone is happy with it.”

The facility that Vigue manages is one of several wood utility pole treatment plants that Stella-Jones operates in Galloway, Brit-ish Columbia. Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir poles are first trimmed and de-barked at another facility,

then distributed to various yards such as Galloway for further treatment.

purpose-built for log yardsReliable uptime is crucial to

Vigue’s operation in Galloway. He keeps the 830 M-T running 16-hours a day to handle the yard’s full range of loading, stacking and picking duties. The model was specially en-gineered by Sennebogen for log-handling, with modifi-cations to the undercarriage for enhanced traction and trailer-pulling capacity.

The new unit features a beefed-up stick with a live heel to handle poles up to 35 metres. Such long poles are straight stacked, but more typically, the poles arriving by truck and rail are unloaded and square-piled in 7.6 metres blocks to allow maximum air flow for natural seasoning.

“Our only back-up is an

old Prentice log handler, just try to get an operator into one on of those now,” Vigue explained. “The accessibility of service and parts from Great West Equipment, located in Cranbrook, just down the road, was a critical factor in our decision to stick with Sennebogen. If there is a problem, we can count on Great West to be onsite within the hour.”

The Galloway yard is a 36-acre gravel-based site, plus 10 acres of leased Crown land. Vigue describes it as a long narrow yard, so the wheeled 830 machine is well-suited to the long travel cycles that are sometimes needed to haul trailers carry-ing 9,070 to 13,600 kg loads.

Damage controlGreat West fitted the 830

with a BC Forestry cab mated to Sennebogen controls.

“Loading these poles is a delicate operation. We have to take care to avoid scar-ring or damaging the wood. Our operators are more than happy with the precision and responsiveness of the Sennebogen hydraulics,” Vigue said.

“Pole butts and tops are usually mixed on the trucks coming in, so we usually take a maximum of five logs in a bite. The rotating head and live heel on the stick lets us alternate their orientation on each layer in the stack, without having to change position as we’re unloading.”

The 41,413 kg 830 M-T comes standard with a hy-draulic elevating cab that can rise up to 6 metres above

ground level, allowing the operator an unobstructed view for efficient high-stacking.

Powered by a 225 hp Cummins diesel engine, the four-wheel-drive system

features dual transmissions providing direct drive to each axle, achieving the highest drawbar pull in its weight class.

More than 725 km north of Winnipeg, the Keeyask Generation Project is under con-struction on the lower Nelson River.

The 695-megawatt hydroelectric gener-ating station, scheduled for completion in 2021, will be a source of renewable energy, producing about 4,400 gigawatt hours of electricity each year. The energy produced will be integrated into Manitoba hydro’s electric system for use in the province and to export to other jurisdictions. Throughout its construction, now in its seventh year, the project has managed a number of lo-cation-specific challenges.

One such challenge occurred when water in a 60-cm pipe in the intake froze, damaging a 2.4 metre concrete pier. To minimize impact to the overall project, Keeyask managers opted to use Hydro-demolition to remove the damaged section. The job required a specialized contractor, one able to leverage all of their experience and equipment to overcome environmental and logistical challenges.

Water Blasting & Vacuum Services se-cured the contract based on a plan that provided not only the efficiency to complete the 140-cubic-metre removal work on time, but recycled nearly 80 per cent of the water. With Aquajet technology, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services pushed the boundaries of hydrodemolition to work deeper and cleaner than any Canadian project to date.

become a core market for the company, ensuring employee safety in increasing-ly hazardous environments encouraged management to explore robotic options.

“The safety of our team members has always been paramount,” said Luc Laforge, president and owner of Water Blasting & Vacuum Services. “Many industrial cleaning applications require long hours in confined spaces and specialized PPE. We wanted to take advantage of any opportunity where we could send in a machine instead of a person.”

While its first hydrodemolition machines were bought used and converted in-house to meet the cleaning challenges of mills and other industrial facilities, the company realized the benefits of working with an original equipment manufacturer.

With one of their pieces of Aquajet equip-ment — an Aqua Cutter 410A — Laforge saw an 80 per cent increase in efficiency, taking a routine scrubber cleaning application from a 30-hour process to five hours.

The 410A, and additional Aquajet equip-ment, including a 710V, allowed Water Blasting & Vacuum Services to branch out into hydrodemolition, hydromilling and other applications, greatly increasing the company’s offerings.

Clear choiceWith an expanded service offering, Water

Blasting & Vacuum Services joined the short-list for a local hydroelectric company in need of a specialized solution for an unexpected concrete removal job that threatened to delay the project.

“This was a very intriguing project — the first of its kind,” said Maurice Lavoie, general manager at Water Blasting and Vacuum Services and site manager for the project. “The pier was solid concrete, 8 feet thick, 40 feet wide and 30 feet tall at the highest point. A portion of the structure needed to be removed and re-poured. No one in Canada — very few in the world — had used hydrodemolition to vertically remove 8-foot-thick concrete. But that was just the start when it came to the complexities and challenges of this job.”

Location was another challenge. The con-struction site was about 4,000 km from the contractor’s headquarters in Edmundston, New Brunswick, and 725 km north of Win-nipeg. Limited access needed to be carefully factored into any proposed solution. While project managers could provide access to water, power or other general construction supplies, getting specialty equipment or replacement parts presented a time-con-suming challenge. Contractors needed dependable equipment and a fully stocked toolbox to limit any unnecessary downtime.

“The project had a lot of challenges to overcome,” Lavoie said. “The remote loca-tion left us with no access to technicians or spare parts if something were to go wrong. On top of that, we would be dealing with subzero temperatures that could easily get down to 40 below.”

The project partners, known as the Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership — which includes four Manitoba First Nations and Manitoba Hydro — had made environment-al protection a cornerstone of the overall project. So, while the original brief specified hydrodemolition as an acceptable process, the contractors would need to ensure all wastewater was properly collected and treated.

“Whatever technique we used, we had to ensure there would be no negative impact on

the surrounding environment,” Lavoie said. “Limiting environmental impact is always an important part of any project for our company, but, when combined with this pro-ject’s remote location, we knew there would be additional challenges. From previous experience on a jobsite at the Muskrat Falls Generating Project in Labrador, we knew hauling water in and out was an option, but it was costly and inefficient. Treating the water onsite and reusing was the most economical and environmentally friendly solution. And with the Aquajet EcoClear we already had the right machine to make it work.”

Clear SolutionThe EcoClear water filtration system, in

combination with Water Blasting & Vacuum Services’ experience, allowed the contractor to present a solution to project managers — one that promised maximum productivity while minimizing resource consumption and protecting the environment.

Water Blasting & Vacuum Services pur-chased the EcoClear system in 2017 as a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to hauling wastewater with vacuum trucks for off-site treatment. The system neutralizes water pH and reduces turbidity to allow safe release back into the environment. It has the capacity to move up to 20 cubic metres per hour.

However, for the hydroelectric power project, rather than treating and releasing the water, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services proposed using the EcoClear as part of a closed loop system that would recycle the water back to its Aqua Cutter 710V. It would be the company’s first time using the Eco-Clear to recycle water on such a large scale, but Lavoie and his team were confident the EcoClear and 710V would make the perfect pair to tackle the challenging application.

“This project put our people and equip-ment to the test,” Lavoie said. “There were a lot of firsts, but we knew we had the experi-ence and the support of the Aquajet team to take our plan from theory to reality.”

Clearing a pathWater Blasting & Vacuum Services arrived at

the jobsite in March 2018. With temperatures averaging -29 Celsius, a hoarding system and heaters had to be set up around the demolition site to provide shelter and keep the pumps operating. In addition to the EcoClear system and 710V, the contractor used a spreader bar and additional tower sections to maximize the hydrodemolition robot’s reach from the stan-dard 7 metres to 12.2 metres. An extension kit allowed the contractor to make a 3.6 metre cut,

as well. These enhancements greatly reduced the downtime frequent repositioning would have required. Additionally, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services employed additional lance sections to increase efficiency and allow the 2.4 metre depth the project required.

Steve Ouellette, lead supervisor at Water Blasting &Vacuum Services, was put in charge of the closed loop system with two 79,500 litre tanks providing water to the Aqua Cut-ter 710V. Wastewater was directed to a low point then pumped to the EcoClear. Once the water was treated, it was pumped back to the holding tanks for reuse. In a 12-hour shift, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services removed an average of 4 cubic meters of concrete and used an estimated 150,000 litres of water. Of this, roughly 20 per cent of the water was lost during the hydrodemolition process due to evaporation and absorption into the concrete. However, Water Blasting & Vacuum Services was able to collect and recycle the remaining 80 per cent with the EcoClear system. Over the course of the project, the EcoClear processed more than 4.9 million litres of water.

Water Blasting & Vacuum Services worked with project managers to integrate demoli-tion into the complex timeline of the overall project, completing the work in two multi-week phases. Lavoie and his team operated the Aqua Cutter daily for almost an entire 12-hour shift, working in 3.6 metre sections to completely demolish the wall.

A separate crew would come on at night to remove rebar and debris. The process repeated for about 41 days of blasting and a total of 53 days onsite.

“Projects like that are once in a lifetime,” Laforge said.

“Thanks to a dedicated team with the ex-perience and daring to take on the impossible and innovative equipment, we were able to find a unique solution that allowed us to push the boundaries of hydrodemolition and be part of such an important construction.”

Terramac has unveiled its new RT7R crawler carrier — the company’s most compact rotating unit.

The new crawler carrier was introduced at ConExpo in March.

Built with an upper frame that rotates a full 360-degrees, the Terramac RT7R can carry and dump up to 6,350 kg of material at any position, even while driving.

The unique functionality allows the RT7R to offload materials faster than a standard straight frame crawler carrier, as the tracks do not need to be counter-rotated to drive another direction.

“The two biggest features that set the RT7R apart are its compact size and unique rotational functionality,” said Matt Slater, vice president of sales and marketing at Terramac.

“The RT7R is an excellent solution for jobs that are in tight spaces, but don’t require the payload of a larger unit. And because it is small and compact, the RT7R can be

easily loaded onto a tag trailer and hauled by line trucks from jobsite to jobsite.”

The RT7R features a footprint of 5.25 metres by 2.5 metres and boasts travel speeds up to nearly 11 km per hour, ensur-ing quick cycle times to keep productivity levels on point.

The 10,922 kg RT7R is powered by a 165 hp Cummins B4.5 Performance Series Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V engine, enabling it to boost jobsite productivity while remaining fuel efficient.

In addit ion, the RT7R showcases Terramac’s rubber track technology. Flo-tation from the unit’s rubber tracks and a fully-loaded ground pressure of just 5.5 psi, allows the RT7R to travel lightly in adverse ground conditions, climb faster on rugged terrain and reach remote areas while minimizing environmental damage and land restoration costs.

The RT7R is ideal for work in tight spaces and environmentally sensitive areas, such

as railroad track right of way access, rivers and levees, as well as general earthmoving, site prep and utility jobsites. Terramac currently offers a heavy-duty rock bed on the RT7R to maximize hauling efficiency for moving dirt, brush or rugged materials such as rip rap.

“The RT7R provides contractors with a versatile solution to tackle a range of tasks while improving efficiency and cost savings,” Slater said. “The amount of time saved adds up quickly when you factor in how many loads are being hauled on a daily basis.”

The RT7R also comes standard with a

rollover protective structure (ROPS) and a falling object protective structure (FOPS).

Furthermore, the RT7R is ergonomically designed with upgraded features, including a wide access door for ease of entry and exit and windows on all sides for increased visibility.

In addition, multiple access points were designed for fluid/filter checks and easily accessible panels are provided for has-sle-free maintenance.

Track wear is also significantly less as the upper structure of the RT7R can rotate, which results in reduced downtime and repair expenses.

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has released its first version of COVID-19 standardized protocols for con-struction sites.

In a news release, the CCA explained construction companies must remain aware of rapidly changing best practices and inte-grate with the CCA Standardized Protocols instructions, best practices and requirements from Health Canada and local public health authorities as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds.

“Our position is that compliant sites should be open and those that cannot consistently comply with measures and guidelines of public health authorities should shut down,” said Mary Van Buren, president of the CCA.

Today, CCA is releasing its first version of its guidelines for jobsites during the pan-demic.

The standardized protocols outline the best practices and a consistent national approach for employers and employees to follow in order to protect themselves and the public at large and help minimize the spread of the coronavirus so that work can continue safely. The protocols include measures on prevention, detection and rapid response based on information and recommendations from respected public health authorities.

As the situation continues to evolve and new best practices emerge, CCA will be up-dating the document, and publishing new

versions as required. The CCA added it plans to keep an open dialogue with stakeholders to ensure the industry remains proactive to any emerging risks.

CCA welcomes the support and en-dorsement of these protocols by any and all members of the construction industry and its allied sectors.

The objectives of the Standardized Proto-cols are to:

· Prioritize the health and safety of workers and of their surrounding communities.

· Apply recommendations and best practices from federal, provincial and municipal public health authorities to construction site procedures.

· Establish and maintain a common COVID-19 Pandemic Response Plan across construction sites.

· Foster open communication amongst stakeholders and ensure a respectful work environment.

North America’s first Liebherr LG 1750 SX mobile cranes have arrived in Canada.

Myshak Crane & Rigging, a Canadian crane and heavy haul contractor, received delivery of their first Liebherr LG 1750 SX mobile crane in December 2019 and the second crane is expected to arrive this month.

The 750-tonne lattice boom crane will reinforce the company’s crane fleet and is mainly intended for jobs in the wind power industry. They are the first two LG 1750 with the SX boom system in North America. The LG 1750 is the now most powerful crane in the Myshak fleet.

Myshak needed the larger cranes as wind turbines continue to increase in height, and their component weights are increasing.

The company selected the LG 1750s

because the powerful crane enables the company to meet the needs of its custom-ers from the wind power industry in North America.

The LG 750 lattice boom mobile crane has the flexibility of a 750 tonne crawler crane combined with the mobility of a high speed mobile crane. Liebherr uses the crane turntable and boom systems from the LR 1750 crawler crane for the LG 1750, together with an eight-axle chassis of the latest design with speed-dependent rear-axle steering.

Myshak ordered both LG 1750 cranes with SL20 boom systems for erecting wind tur-bines with a hub height of up to 100 metres at low cost without using a derrick system.

In addition, the company purchased the even more powerful SX boom system for erecting turbines with a hub height of 140

metres or more using a derrick system. This enables it to erect the latest generation of wind turbines.

Although Myshak is mainly planning to use the new LG 1750 for wind power jobs, it will also be used in other sectors, such as heavy hoist.

In a news release, Myshak explained its other reasons for purchasing the Liebherr crane: “We have a long-term partnership with Liebherr and are delighted with the

quality of the products and the company’s innovations.”

Myshak has a 240-strong workforce and operates more than 250 cranes.

The company also recently also took delivery of an LR 1350/1 crawler crane, LG 1550 lattice boom mobile crane, LTM 1500-8.1, LTM 1250-5.1 and LTM 1070-4.2 mobile cranes from Liebherr. Another major part of the company’s business is heavy haul transport.

The Government of Alberta has finalized an agreement with Calgary-based TC Energy Corporation to provide financial support to accelerate construction of the Keystone XL Pipe-line, as of April 1.

The investment will include $1.5 billion in equity invest-ment in 2020 followed by a $6 billion loan guarantee in 2021.

The Keystone XL Pipeline is expected to be completed and in service in 2023.

This agreement is the culmination of six months of nego-tiations, as well as rigorous vetting by government officials and outside industry experts to ensure the success of this project, while minimizing risk to taxpayers.

The government is backstopping the project to enable TC Energy to begin immediate construction on the Alberta portion of the pipeline. This will ensure the earliest possible date of completion.

The project will create more than 1,400 direct and 5,400 indirect jobs in Alberta during construction and will gen-erate an estimated $30 billion in tax and royalty revenues for future generations of Albertans and Canadians.

“We cannot wait for the end of the pandemic and the global recession to act. There are steps we must make now to build our future focused on jobs, the economy and pipelines. Today we are moving forward with a project that is essential to our future prosperity,” said Alberta Premier Jason Kenney.

“This investment in Keystone XL is a bold move to re-take control of our province’s economic destiny and put it firmly back in the hands of the owners of our natural resources, the people of Alberta. The Government of Alberta is confident that this is a wise investment. After construction is complete, we will be able to sell our shares at profit. In addition, the project will have a net return of over $30 billion to the Alberta taxpayer through royalties and higher prices for Alberta oil in the next 20 years.”

At 1,947 km in length, the Keystone XL Pipeline will be capable of safely delivering 830,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska where it will connect with TC Energy’s existing facilities to reach U.S. Gulf Coast refiners.

“We appreciate the ongoing backing of landowners, cus-tomers, Indigenous groups and numerous partners in the US and Canada who helped us secure project support and key regulatory approvals as this important energy infrastructure project is poised to put thousands of people to work, gen-erate substantial economic benefits and strengthen the continent’s energy security,” said Russ Girling, TC Energy’s president and chief executive officer. “In addition, we thank US President Donald Trump and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney as well as many government officials across North America for their advocacy without which, individually and collectively, this project could not have advanced.”

Keystone construction during COVID-19With construction taking place during the COVID-19

pandemic, Girling added TC Energy will take guidance from all levels of government to determine safe practices for construction crews.

“Construction will advance only after every consideration for the health and safety of our people, their families and of those in the surrounding communities has been taken into account,” Girling said.

The Keystone XL Pipeline is underpinned by new 20-year transportation service agreements for 575,000 barrels per day

with a group of strong, credit-worthy counterparties which are expected to generate about US$1.3 billion of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization on an annual basis.

As well, once the Keystone XL Pipeline is in service, cur-rent contracts for 115,000 barrels per day from Hardisty to the Gulf Coast on the existing Keystone line will shift to the new facilities under renewed 20-year contracts.

Keystone XL pipeline highlights · Thousands of well-paying jobs during construction.

· Advances continental energy security.

· Tens of millions in property and income taxes through every year of operation.

· Six comprehensive scientific reviews by the U.S. Depart-

ment of State over the past decade concluding that the project can be built and operated in an environmentally sustainable and responsible way.

· Safer and less-GHG intensive than current methods of transporting crude oil to market.

· Thousands of stakeholders engaged, including landowners, community members and Indigenous communities.

Hyundai Construction Equipment Amer-icas has unveiled its new A Series wheel loaders, which feature Cummins Perform-ance Series engines.

The new loaders, which include the HL930A and HL975CVT, were introduced at ConExpo in March.

The new A Series wheel loaders reflect the benefits of Hyundai’s collaboration with Cummins. For example, the loaders include Engine-Connected Diagnostics (ECD) that service technicians can use to remotely diagnose and report engine problems and help assure the proper approach to resolving the problems.

“Hyundai performance is built on in-novation, world-class engineering and manufacturing, and components and sys-tems sourced from trusted global suppliers,” said Stan Park, vice president of distribution and marketing at Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas.

As well, an important feature of the A Series

machines is the use of Cummins Perform-ance Series engines that comply with the international Stage 5 emissions-control stan-dard. Combined with the engineering and product design expertise of Hyundai, these engines will deliver substantial performance gains from a smaller, lighter power package.

Customers will experience a more than a 10 per cent increase in power and a nearly 20 per cent increase in torque compared to previous engines, all while using less fuel.

The Cummins Performance Series engines integrate the latest after-treatment system – the Single Module – equipped with com-bustion and air-handling technology to be exhaust gas recirculation-free. The engines also offer a simpler installation with lower installed costs.

Hyundai’s HL930A The new Hyundai HL930A wheel loader is

sized to meet the needs of utility and general construction contractors.

The HL930A XT model has an operating weight of 11,400 kg, and a standard bucket capacity of 1.9 cubic metres.

It achieves 130 net hp at 2,200 rpm through a Cummins B4.5 Performance Series diesel engine equipped with certified Stage 5 emissions control.

“The new HL930A model rounds out our wheel loader product line with a machine that will find a variety of applications in utility work and general construction,” Park said.

“The continuing strength of the housing market is contributing to the demand for machines in this size category. Like other HL series wheel loaders, the HL930A offers contractors a combination of performance, convenience, serviceability and safety that will make it a popular choice.”

productivity enhancementsHyundai A Series wheel loaders include

an enhanced on-board weighing system. The standard feature now offers improved precision and weight calibration capabilities. The automatic/manual cumulative weighing function enhances operating efficiency. As well, icons display weighing limits, and the two-colour weight value indicator on the monitor supports accurate weighing for enhanced production management.

Eco Report, another new productivity fea-ture of the Hyundai A Series wheel loaders, analyzes the wheel loader’s operation status based on operator performance, enabling the operator to use the analysis to adjust behaviours to achieve greater productivity and efficiency.

Smart Power Mode, another new feature, reduces fuel consumption by adjusting the engine speed in heavy-duty applications such as digging. The capability not only saves fuel while delivering full Power Mode per-formance, it also balances traction force with breakout force for enhanced productivity.

Operator safety and comfortHyundai A Series wheel loaders incorpor-

ate the use of radar to detect rear obstacles, day or night and without blind spots.

The radar also reports on the status – mov-ing or stationary – of the nearest obstacle.

Radar is a feature of the new Hyundai HiDETECT system, which represents the evolution of the Hyundai All-Around View Monitoring and Intelligent Moving-Object

Detection systems (AAVM/IMOD) that have been available on Hyundai wheel loaders since 2015.

The A Series wheel loaders include a new emergency stop switch located at the bottom of the operator’s seat.

This is a safety feature that will shut down the engine at any time the operator deter-mines it to be necessary.

Furthermore, Hyundai has reduced in-cabin noise levels to 68 dB for improved operator comfort and concentration.

Another new feature, the remote-control door option, which enables the operator to remotely open the cabin door for improved safety and convenience.

Remote-controlled HL960AHyundai also demonstrate a remote-con-

trolled Hyundai HL960A wheel loader for use in hazardous applications at ConExpo.

The Hyundai HL960A wheel loader – an A Series upgrade of the HL960 model – demonstrates a prototype remote-control system, enabling the machine to be operated from any appropriately technology-enabled remote site.

Hyundai expects the remote-control wheel loader to find use in severe or hazardous-du-ty applications, where an operator could be exposed to danger. The HL960A has an operating weight of 19,200 kg, a standard bucket capacity of 3.3 cubic metres, and achieves 222 net hp through a Cummins B6.7 Performance Series diesel engine equipped with certified Stage 5 emissions control.

HL975A CVT The Hyundai HL975A CVT is an updated

A Series version of the HL975 wheel loader with a continuously variable transmission from ZF, a global manufacturer in transmis-sion technology.

The ZF cPOWER continuously variable transmission delivers improved fuel con-sumption of up to 25 per cent without any sacrifice in performance or power. The cPOWER is continuously variable over the complete drive range, both forward and reverse.

It provides smooth, hydraulic starts through its continuously variable power-split technology. And as there is no mechanical connection between engine and driveline, the transmission is resistant to wear from heavy loads.

TRUCKs

Volvo Trucks is calling its new VHD the “most significant evolution” of the manufacturer’s vocational truck offering in decades.

The new vocational series combines structural upgrades with technological and innovative advances to build on the new Volvo VHD’s durability, versatility and productivity.

“The new Volvo VHD looks every bit as capable as it is, designed to bring new energy into the vocational market,” said John Felder, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America.

“Everything we’ve done to improve the model to make it more versatile and reliable also extends the life of the vehicle and increas-es driver productivity, safety and comfort. Drivers will love this truck because it makes hard work easy. It’s the perfect example of tougher made smarter.”

A new look The new Volvo VHD features an updated

exterior, delivering a modern look that reflects other models in the Volvo Trucks family.

The VHD has a new grille design, as well as new LED high and low beam headlights. The fully sealed headlamp component offers a brighter, more focused beam for increased visibility. As well, an available de-icing feature burns through ice and snow that accumulates on headlamps in cold weather.

Safety and productivity features for the vocational industry include Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) and the next generation of Volvo Active Driver Assist (VADA).

The VDS system delivers a safer, more com-

fortable driver experience by adding torque to reduce steering strain at low speeds and remove vibrations caused by rough terrain.

Volvo Active Driver Assist combines camera and radar sensors to detect metallic objects and vehicles that are stationary or vehicles braking in front of the truck. If a metallic object of size is detected, audible and visual warnings are made to alert the driver, includ-ing red warning light flashes reflected on the windshield. Warnings are displayed up to 3 seconds before an imminent impact with the stationary object. If the system recognizes the stationary object as a vehicle, and the driver does not take action, Volvo Active Driver Assist will automatically alert the driver and engage the brakes to help the driver mitigate the potential collision. Braking assist is avail-able at speeds greater than 25 km per hour.

As well, a new, heavy duty VHD bumper features a 45 mm tow pin rated for a 38,387 kg capacity. Responding to customer requests, the tow pin allows for a quick pull out of sticky situations thereby increasing uptime and drivers’ peace of mind.

Inside the cab, Volvo Trucks has improved driver comfort and productivity. For example, the truck’s ignition has been moved to the lower left-hand side of the dash, while the steering wheel buttons are more touch-friend-ly and clustered intuitively to help drivers feel more confident.

I-Shift transmissionVolvo I-Shift transmission with crawler

gears adds one or two gears to the 12-speed

transmission. This enables the VHD to start on steep grades, provide low-speed control and reach maximum highway speeds with faster rear axle ratios.

When startability and maneuverability are critical, I-Shift with crawler gears offers the highest weight capacity in an automated manual transmission. It enables controlled forward and reverse travel at extremely slow speeds.

Volvo T-Ride suspension delivers a com-fortable ride under demanding conditions by applying constant pressure on the wheels to create sure-footed traction. The Volvo T-ride suspension also offers a new ride stiffness option for mixers and trucks with wing plows.

ConnectivityThe latest in connectivity solutions such as

Remote Programming and Remote Diagnos-tics allow customers to use real data insights to make the right decisions for increased safety and truck productivity.

Remote Programming eliminates the need to remove trucks from service in order to update powertrain control unit software by enabling software updates over-the-air using Volvo Trucks’ telematics platform. Updates are available anywhere in Canada or the United States.

Standard in every new Volvo truck, Remote Diagnostics helps avoid unexpected down-time by offering a range of unique benefits. The system helps avoid unexpected downtime by monitoring the truck’s Volvo engine, I-Shift and aftertreatment 24 hours a day.

Volvo Truck’s Uptime Center in Greensboro, North Carolina is home to 400 specialists that look at the cause of a fault code as well as re-view the data from before and after an event.

“For years, the Volvo VHD has been one of the most capable and versatile trucks on the jobsite. We listened to our customers, and are proud to showcase the newly updated VHD with the same class-leading features and technological innovations our customers expect from a Volvo truck with relevant and important updates that benefit the functional needs of vocational applications,” Felder said. “At Volvo Trucks, we continue to improve our product offerings and we have done so for an already tough vocational truck model. Now, this smarter and more innovative VHD for the vocational market raises the bar on what it takes to be an all-around great work truck.”

The new Volvo VHD series offers the latest in safety and uptime solutions for vocational applications

Pictured here in 2009 is a 1965 Mack B61 highway tractor pristinely restored by HCEA Canada’s long-time member, Barry Petteplace of Teeswater, Ontario.

Petteplace located the truck in Kansas in 2003 and finished the restoration the following year.

During the 1953 to 1966 production run, about 47,000 model B61 units were built and they remain an iconic part of trucking history. This unit is now part of the England-based Lee family collection.

Powered by a Mack END 673 engine pro-ducing 187 hp and equipped with a 15-speed Tri-Plex transmission, the truck had 17,000-kg rear axles. Ruggedly built trucks, they were available in several vocational configurations from highway tractor to fire truck to dump truck to mixer truck, with single or tandem rear axles and gas or diesel power plants.

The B61 tractor shown here was repo-

sitioning a Cedarapids crusher owned by Wes Riley Construction Ltd., also located in Teeswater, Ontario. Wes Riley has several portable crushers in his custom crushing fleet and when this Cedarapids unit required repowering he installed a Mack engine — look closely on the engine hood and you'll see the Mack name proudly displayed.

To see more than 60 restored pieces of vintage construction equipment in action, be sure to attend Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA) Canada's two upcoming events.

The two-day show, 'Wheels & Tracks in Motion' takes place June 13 to 14, 2020 along with the October event, 'Last Blast' on Octo-ber 17. Both events are held at the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario.

In response to extensive feedback on its Multi-Tank Upfit platform, Thunder Creek Equipment has re-launched the product on a Dodge Ram chassis.

As well, Thunder Creek Equipment has added an optional heated Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) handling system to meet the needs of customers in colder climates.

Thunder Creek’s Multi-Tank Upfit (MTU) was originally launched in late 2018 on a Ford F-550 chassis.

The MTU combines the technology of Thunder Creek’s Multi-Tank diesel trans-portation platform, which does not require HAZMAT authorization or, in some cases, even a commercial driver’s license, to oper-ate.

The MTU is ideal for construction com-panies and fuel distributors operating in metropolitan and urban settings, as well

as disaster relief organizations, where a nimble fuelling solution is required for navigating compressed jobsites and fuel delivery locations.

The all new MTU was launched exclu-sively at ConExpo 2020.

“One of the things that we take great pride in as a family-owned company is working with and listening to our customers,” said Loren Van Wyk, the founder and co-owner of Thunder Creek Equipment. “After launch-ing the MTU platform, we not only received great feedback, but also started to see the product really take off in big cities across the country, many of which face harsh winters that can leave DEF susceptible to freezing.

“Adding the heated DEF component is something we’ve leveraged on many other products with great success, so bringing that option to the MTU was a no-brainer.”

The base model of the MTU is equipped to carry nearly 3,500 litres of bulk diesel fuel contained in eight, separate 435 litre fuel tanks that are connected through a common pumping manifold.

The addition of Thunder Creek’s patented

2-in-1 DEF handling pump helps users elim-inate the risk of contaminants entering the DEF stream and potentially harming Tier 4 machinery. When the 378-litre heated DEF unit is added to the MTU, total fuel capacity is 2,611 litres.

Kenworth has unveiled a new, factory-installed twin steer configuration for its Kenworth T880.

Introduced at ConExpo, and available as a day cab, the new Kenworth T880 Twin Steer features set-back front axles, which is ideal for crane, mixer and other vocation-al applications that require a 2.2 metre axle spacing to meet local bridge laws and enhance overall load carry-ing capacity.

“The latest addition to the Kenworth T880 family provides an important new option for our vocational cus-tomers that expands their productivity,” said Laura Bloch, Kenworth assistant general manager for sales and marketing.

The Kenworth T880 Twin

Steer provides 18,143 kg rated front axles, springs and steering gears. The front suspension is equalized be-tween the front and rear steer axles for greater driver com-fort and payload distribution.

The new T880 configura-tion offers both the Paccar MX-13 engine rated up to 510 hp and 1,850 foot-pounds of torque, and the Paccar MX-11 engine with up to 430 hp and 1,650 foot-pounds of torque. The T880 Twin Steer is standard with a 296 cm BBC short hood optimized for the Paccar MX engine family. The 311-cm standard BBC hood is an option for the Paccar MX-13 and the op-tional Cummins X15 engine.

The T880 Twin Steer pack-age also includes aluminum fenders over the second axle

and step-between axles for cab access. Battery box choices include parallel be-tween right-hand steer axles with up to three batteries, in-cab or any back-of-cab option.

A back-of-cab vertical DPF/SCR exhaust system is required with the Paccar MX-13 and Paccar MX-11.

At ConExpo, Kenworth displayed the T880 Twin Steer equipped with a cus-tom truck crane, 505-hp engine and Allison 4700RDS 7-speed automatic transmis-sion.

The Kenworth vocation-al line-up also features a T880S Twin Steer model with set-forward front axles and 155 cm axle spread to maxi-mize payload. That model was introduced in 2018.

Chevy silverado transformed into hybrid electric truck

XL Fleet has transformed two versions of the Chevrolet Silverado into hybrid elec-tric vehicles.

The company debuted the two new hy-brid electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck options at NTEA’s Work Truck Show held in Indianapolis in March.

“The launch of these two new Silverado upfit technology platforms represents an exciting expansion of our work with GM Fleet as well as our growing line of hybrid electric pickup trucks, which have become some of our most popular vehicles in recent years,” said Dimitri Kazarinoff, CEO of XL Fleet. “Hybrid fleet trucks are still the most viable green transportation option for most fleets, given the significant impact they can have on fuel economy and sustainability goals without disrupting operations or performance.”

At the show, XL Fleet displayed an upfit-ted hybrid electric Silverado 2500 HD in the Chevrolet Commercial Vehicles booth and an upfitted hybrid electric Silverado 3500 HD with an installed Knapheide service body in the XL Fleet booth.

Both vehicles are equipped with the XLH hybrid electric drive system, representing the latest expansion of XL’s hybrid solution for commercial and municipal fleets.

“The all-new Silverado HD is a true work truck; our strongest, most capable HD ever. When you combine that with XL Fleet’s

hybrid upfit technology, together we’re able to provide our shared customers an innovative truck solution they’ve been asking for,” said Ed Peper, vice president of GM Fleet.

The XLH hybrid electric platform for the Silverado features a high-efficiency lithium ion battery, inverter and electric traction motor, which propels the vehicle forward during acceleration and captures energy through regenerative braking dur-ing deceleration.

As with the rest of the XLH hybrid electric upfit applications, the system requires no external power or charging infrastructure to operate, and all OEM factory warranties remain intact.

XL Fleet began taking orders for both vehicles during The Work Truck show and expects to begin delivering the HEV Silverado 2500 HD platform in the second quarter of 2020, with the 3500 HD model following closely behind.

Daimler Trucks North Amer-ica LLC (DTNA) is reshap-ing its product strategy for Freightliner and Western Star into a segment-based busi-ness structure.

The move aims to better position DTNA to serve both the on-highway and Voca-tional segments in which Freightliner and Western Star brands compete by aligning internal resources to segment-specific customer needs.

“We are organizing our business to bring equal-ly strong focus to both our On-highway and Vocational truck customers. Along with that, the best people, prod-ucts, service and support have been combined to grow our two strong truck brands across both segments,” said Roger Nielsen, president and CEO of DTNA. “This new strategy will ensure that we are de-livering the best experience for customers, no matter the application or the industry.”

DTNA has also announced new roles for the leaders of both Freightliner and West-ern Star.

Richard Howard, senior vice president of sales and marketing, will now assume responsibility for DTNA’s complete portfolio of on-high-way trucks as the senior vice president, on-highway sales and marketing.

David Carson, president of Western Star, will transition to the role of senior vice presi-dent, vocational sales and

marketing. In his new role, Carson assumes responsib-ility for the full portfolio of vocational trucks at DTNA.

DTNA’s alignment with the truck market segments reflects an evolution in its go-to-market strategy and promises to drive a custom-er-focused mindset, while honouring the unique herit-age and products of two distinct brands.

“We know that all of our customers are unique, but that is especially true in the voca-tional segment,” Carson said.

“From municipal custom-ers ordering large quantities of Freightliner M2 equipped with digger derricks, to con-struction companies that have vast heavy equipment needs for products like the Western Star 4900 configured with heavy-duty cranes or dump truck bodies, it is an incredibly rich and diverse segment that requires a keen understanding of each of our customers’ businesses. Our new structure and focus on our customers’ specialized applications will benefit the vocational segment like no one else can.”

With the largest dealer network in North America, customers in both the vo-cational and on-highway segments will continue to be supported by the entirety of the DTNA dealer network and field staff.

“Our new structure will allow our business to grow to new heights,” Howard said.

“Together, with our dealer network, we will continue to prioritize our focus on cus-tomer needs including safety, fuel efficiency and maximum uptime.

Alignment around seg-ments will allow us to deliver a world-class customer experi-ence to both our Freightliner and Western Star customers.”

Mack Trucks is aiming to reduce the strain of the jobsite by introducing its Mack Command Steer active steering system to Granite axle back models.

Mack Command Steer reduces driver fatigue and can help reduce muscle strain by up to 30 per cent, thanks to the combin-ation of an electric motor with the existing hydraulic steering. Command Steer for Mack Granite axle back models will be available for order in the third quarter of the year.

“Driving a fully loaded, heavy-duty con-struction truck is a physically demanding

task, especially when you add the uneven terrain common to most jobsites,” said Roy Horton, Mack Trucks director of product strategy. “With the added steering assist from Mack Command Steer, we are able to reduce driver effort by 85 per cent and significantly improve driver productivity and jobsite safety.”

Command Steer monitors terrain, driver inputs and environmental elements more than 2,000 times per second via sensors placed throughout the truck. Based on the input, the system provides variable steering effort through its electric motor,

which applies additional torque as needed to the steering.

Alongside reducing steering effort at slow speeds, Command Steer also helps filter out uneven terrain such as the holes, dips and ruts common to most jobsites. When such an irregularity is detected, the system reacts to counter the steering force, smoothing steering feedback and reducing the possibility of steering wheel kicks.

“While drivers will experience a sig-nificant reduction in steering effort, particularly on uneven jobsite surfaces, Mack Command Steer brings many bene-

fits to on-road driving as well,” Horton said. “The system will also compensate for

situations, like strong winds and crowned roads, helping drivers maintain greater control so they can focus on the task at hand.”

As well, Command Steer features a unique return-to-zero capability that automatically returns the steering wheel to the zero or centre position in forward and reverse.

This helps simplify tight maneuvers, such as backing a trailer or positioning a dump or mixer to unload.

Adam Palleschi, president of Pall-Con Construction Ltd. and his father Frank, have more than 30 years of involvement in both heavy and light civil construction within the GTA. They have built a great reputation for themselves through their hard work, providing quality workman-ship and dedication to their customers. They are proud of the long term relation-ships they have built with their ICI cus-tomers, some for over 20 years.

They currently own a Bobcat® S185 compact skid-steer because another

construction company they know, swore by Bobcat machines. “They were right. Bobcat machines are strong, reliable and very versatile,” stated Adam. “Also, with Bobcat’s endless amount of attachments, nothing else compares”.

“Gino Cervo, sales specialist for Bobcat of Toronto, had recently stopped by our office in the fall and we just so happened to be in need for a track loader for this coming spring. We decided on the Bob-cat T650 because of its bigger size, al-though it can still get into tighter areas.

We will use it for grading, back filling, and removals. It will be a very versatile ma-chine for us.”

“Gino has been great. He is experienced, always on top of things, follows up, and he’s also just a great guy to talk to. Not one of those pushy salesmen. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gino or Bobcat of Toronto.”

Thanks Adam.

COMPACT EQUIPMENT

By Doug LeVouger,Manager of machine sales excellence at Finning

More often, operators are now required to work in con-fined spaces and need greater maneuverability from their machines.

Compact equipment allows operators easy access to confined areas where larger equipment can’t effectively maneuver, such as urban settings. When you add in at-tachments and the equipment’s ability to perform many different tasks, a simple, single-use device is turned into a multi-purpose machine. Compact equipment’s increased diversity and enhanced technology is translating into major productivity improvements, from earthmoving on a building site to landscaping a park.

The ease with which you can attach or detach an attach-ment adds to the productivity and time-savings on a job. Whether it’s moving gravel, pushing snow or hauling hay bales, compact equipment attachments are making jobs safer, faster and more precise, while offering the improved fuel efficiency of a smaller machine.

Tech availabilityThe use of technology is crucial to the efficiency and

productivity of any project and keeps both the crew and equipment connected.

Grade control and telematics, once reserved only for larger machines, are now increasingly available on compact equipment, helping to level the playing field with contractors running larger fleets. Next generation compact equipment offers better overall performance, improved productivity and greater fuel efficiency, and as equipment technology continues to improve and evolve, the result is cleaner engines, lower emissions, reduced noise and better value in the long run.

Technology has also increased ease of operation. Equip-ment can be adjusted to operator skill levels, optimizing performance while staying safe on the job. For wheel loaders with hydrostatic transmissions, the machine’s response can also be adjusted with the push of a button to increase the tractive efforts on ice or mimic the neutral roll out of a traditional torque converter machine. New attachment technology like geo-fencing and locator de-vices mean owners and operators can track utilization and maintenance requirements to get a better understanding of usage and downtime.

Technology advancements have led to improved pro-ductivity and lower operating costs with better fuel efficiency, fewer emissions and more effective equipment that doesn’t need to operate at full capacity, all day, to be productive. The right technology partner will work with you and provide the expertise and support needed to help increase efficiencies aligned with your business needs, no matter the size of the machine or your operation.

Better tech, safer jobsitesTechnology helps increase safety on the job via features

like cameras which are mounted on equipment to help detect and avoid hazards, improve visibility and enhancing awareness of surroundings.

As well, new machines now come equipped with ob-ject detection technology, including back-up cameras and 360 degree cameras, proximity sensors and alarms notifying the operator and workers on-site when there may be an issue.

New developments in fatigue technologies are also playing a role in increased safety. They work by monitoring eye-closure duration and head poses right inside the cab, sending immediate alarms to operators and site-man-agers. And wearables, attached to personal protection equipment can also be used to alert workers of potential

dangers or notify an operator when a machine is in too close proximity.

The enhanced features and adaptability of compact equipment have led to safer operations and made oper-ators with fewer skills better, but that doesn’t mean it can replace training.

Educating operators is also essential to ensure everyone stays safe on the jobsite. Training and site safety practices go hand-in-hand for the efficient and safe operation of equipment and keeping workers safe on the worksite.

What’s next for compact equipment? Innovation in the machine performance of smaller ma-

chines, combined with an improved operator experience, are contributing to increased productivity and efficiency on jobsites, providing a safer work environment and leading to better focus and performance from operators, who are able to spend more time concentrating on the task at hand.

Sacrificing quality and performance no longer needs to be a concern when it comes to compact equipment.

These machines offer an even higher level of power and productivity while increasing fuel efficiency with lower emissions and maintenance costs. Contractors willing to diversify their fleet and invest in compact equipment will see the benefits — greater versatility, improved costs and a smaller carbon footprint.

Wacker Neuson has expanded its skid steer and compact track loader line with several new 100-hp models.

The SW32 skid steer and ST40 and ST50 compact track loaders have been optimized to provide more working power to achieve faster cycle times when pushing or digging heavy materials.

The new skid steer and CTLs provide the needed power when operating high demand hydraulic attachments, such as forestry mulchers and cold planers.

All three units are powered by a Kohler KDI 3404 turbo diesel engine that offers a maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system as an exhaust aftertreatment.

Wacker Neuson selected the Kohler KDI engines for all of its skid steers, due to its advanced design, power, performance and ease of maintenance.

The SW32 skid steer offers a rated operat-ing capacity of 1,450 kg and the vertical lift arm offers a hinge-pin height of 3.4 metres, which is ideal for using pallet forks and loading high-sided trucks.

The ST40 is a radial lift compact track loader with a hinge pin height of 3.25 metres and a rated operating capacity of 1,180 kg (35 per cent) and 1,840 kg (50 per cent). With the radial lift arm, the ST40 provides the horizontal reach which is ideal for loading and unloading flatbed trucks. The extra power makes digging in hard soil much easier.

The ST50, a vertical lift machine, has a hinge pin height of 3.46 metres and a rated operating capacity of 1,587 kg (25 per cent) and 2,268 kg (50 per cent). Offering more tractive effort, faster travel speeds and the power to easily handle hydraulic attach-

ments, the ST50 is a workhorse on any job. The cab fully tips forward with the loader

arms down, providing complete access to all maintenance components. The machines are engineered to be user-friendly with a simple, open design and efficient layout that requires less time on daily service checks and more time on the job.

A new era of comfort features are inte-grated into Wacker Neuson’s skid steers and CTLs. The high visibility cab includes angled pedals and foot bed, as well as conveniently located switches that significantly reduce operator fatigue.

Access is easy with a wide door and step, plus there is no restrictive lap bar. Control options for any operator include mechanical hand-foot (SW models), electric-hydraulic (EH) hand-foot and selectable EH (ISO and H-pattern). This ensures operators with varying experience can efficiently operate the machines with ease.

All Wacker Neuson skid steer and compact track loaders were designed, engineered and built in North America.

John Deere has expanded availability of SmartGrade, its proprietary grade control technology, into the 333G com-pact track loader.

The implementation of SmartGrade is the first time a fully integrated grade control technology will be available on a compact machine.

“Already, the 333 has a really good reputation in the market,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager for skid steers and compact track loaders at John Deere Construction and Forestry.

“So, what we’re doing is integrating technologies that can help customers be more productive and more accurate.”

The SmartGrade 333G compact track loader will expand the capabilities of customers working in site development, roadbuilding, landscaping, residential and commercial building operations, by enabling them to take on new tasks and larger jobs that require accuracy.

By leveraging the latest grade control technology, the SmartGrade 333G machine levels the playing field with contractors running larger fleets.

“It has all the same attributes as a compact piece of equipment, even though this is more of a purpose-built package,” Zupancic said.

The SmartGrade 333G is designed to increase productivity by helping to automatically complete grading tasks, with fewer passes and less rework compared to working without grade control technology.

As well, operators can reap the benefit of a versatile, yet transportable, machine where the grade control system is fully integrated into the machine’s structures and software, delivering precise grading performance while eliminating vulnerable masts and cables.

SmartGrade meets DozerModeIn addition to introducing SmartGrade on the 333G,

operators will also benefit from the launch of DozerMode, a breakthrough control solution that enables the EH joystick control system to function like a crawler dozer.

“At a push of a button, you can change the control pattern of the machine from a typical skid steer pattern to more of a dozer control pattern,” Zupancic said.

DozerMode is beneficial when operating the ma-chine-equipped six-way dozer blade attachment that can both cut a grade and spread materials, streamlining attachment needs and setup time.

“This is robust enough to push material really well,” Zupancic said

The blade is fine-tuned to meet the performance needs of a compact track loader and does not require tools to change between other attachments.

It also enhances the versatility of the machine by accur-ately and automatically cutting or finishing light materials in tight spaces.

In conjunction with SmartGrade technology, the blade reduces the amount of operator input, ultimately lowering operator fatigue.

“In a market that becomes more competitive by the day, it’s important we provide our customers with leading-edge

equipment,” Zupancic said. While the 333G is the first compact machine to feature

SmartGrade, other machines may feature the technology in the future.

“We’re dipping our toes in the market with this first,” Zupancic said. “We’re testing the waters. If it goes well we will make this technology available on smaller compact track loaders too.”

Case has debuted the all-new DL550B — the first fully inte-grated compact dozer loader.

The DL550B was originally introduced at ConExpo 2017 as a concept machine named “Project Minotaur.”

The machine leverages the footprint of a compact track loader (CTL) with the chassis-integrated C-frame and blade of a dozer to create a powerful two-in-one machine for grading and loading applications.

“Our goal with this concept was to see it through all the way,” said George MacIntyre, product manager for compact equipment at Case. “The DL550B is here today as the result of the passion and drive of our engineering, product validation and manufacturing personnel, the real-world operators who spent hundreds of hours running prototypes around the country, as well as the enthusiasm shown by the construction industry in providing feedback to how this machine should perform in the field.”

The DL550B features a dozer-style undercarriage for opti-mal dozing performance and is available with either steel or rubber track configurations to provide contractors with flexibility based on the types of jobs they tackle.

It also features Case Universal Machine Control, which allows the machine to be outfitted straight from the dealer with any of the three major suppliers of grade/machine control technologies. As well, the DL550B is compatible with Case SiteControl CoPilot, which provides a mastless machine control experience with basic control of slope/grade.

The machine weighs about 8,165 kg and operates at 114 horsepower. It is also available with an optional fully integrat-ed ripper and is compatible with a wide range of heavy-duty attachments that make it suitable for everything from initial site clearing to finish grading.

Case dealers will begin taking orders for the DL550B in the fourth quarter of 2020 with units arriving in 2021.

Dozer designThe DL550B features a six-way blade and a C-frame that

attaches directly into the chassis and primary coupler of the machine.

The design provides the stability and smooth operating plane of a small dozer and ensures that all operating power and stress is channelled through the chassis instead of the attachment coupler and arms of the machine, unlike a basic dozer blade attachment on a compact track loader.

“A standard CTL with a dozer blade attachment can be effective for occasional work, but that combination doesn’t provide true six-way blade performance, or the long-term precision possible with the DL550B,” MacIntyre said.

“This design is much better for strength and reliability as the pushing power is channelled through the entire machine. We have also integrated dozer controls for a much more intuitive experience for the operator versus the complicated control arrangement that comes with a common attachment blade.”

CTL-style operation To transition to CTL-style operation, the operator hydraul-

ically detaches the C-frame and blade to match up with an attachment that’s available for skid steers and CTLs. The ma-chine comes standard with a 1 cubic metre bucket, available with either a cutting edge or SmartFit teeth system.

The DL550B does include some changes compared to the original concept unveiled at ConExpo 2017.

The machine now includes an evolution from radial to a vertical lift geometry and an increase in rated operating cap-acity from 2,041 kg up to 2,500 kg (at 50 per cent tipping load).

“We found that the vertical lift pattern helped us achieve both the dozing performance we were looking for while also expanding its ability to serve as a high-capacity CTL,”

MacIntyre said. “The vertical lift pattern allows us to reach deeper into trucks, and additional enhancements in machine structure and performance allowed us to increase the rated operating capacity by 1,000 pounds, making the DL550B one of the most powerful and versatile machines ever built within this footprint.”

The DL550B also offers auxiliary hydraulic options that exceed any of the CTLs in the current Case lineup — up to 150 litres per minute at 4,100 psi — which matches well with high-speed attachments such as mulchers and grinders for heavy duty land clearing and site development work.

“We envision the DL550B as the next great two-in-one machine that will help simplify fleet management and ex-pand service offerings for its owners,” MacIntyre said. “From landscapers to residential contractors, smaller businesses that have thought about buying a small-frame dozer to expand will now get comparable performance out of a machine that also doubles as a CTL — a machine platform that they are likely already operating.”

An intuitive operator experienceThe DL550B features electro-hydraulic dozer joysticks that

also operate similar to ISO controls in skid steers and CTLs — changing from dozer to CTL operating function is as simple as the push of a button.

Steering, as well as forward and reverse travel, is controlled with the left hand while boom and bucket controls are ma-nipulated by the right hand when operating in CTL mode. Those same right-hand controls operate the lift, angle and tilt functions of the six-way blade when in dozer mode.

Popular Case dozer features such as blade shake, as well as manual pitch adjustment, are also incorporated.

The machine is compatible with a full complement of 2D

and 3D machine control solutions to further transform it into a precise grading platform, from sub-base up to finish grade — especially on smaller yards or jobsites where larger dozers or graders may not be able to gain access.

The machine also includes the all-new operator interface enhancements recently introduced with the Case B Series skid steers and CTLs, including a 20-cm LCD multifunction display that serves as its control centre. It features an integrated backup camera, core machine settings, trip metres, service interval information and machine operating status details similar to an automotive dashboard.

The DL550B is also available with Case SiteWatch telem-atics to further streamline fleet management and planned maintenance activities.
