QUALIFICATIONS

I have qualified Eight full fledge advance courses in organic chemistry at H. E. J.

Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical Sciences,

University of Karachi (Pakistan) securing excellent grades in each. Brief outline of the

courses is as follows;

1) CHEM-701 (Physical Organic Methods)

Contents of this course include IR, UV, CD-ORD, Mass spectrometry, NMR

spectroscopy, separation techniques, X-ray crystallography, molecular mechanics,

structure determination of proteins and peptides, genetic engineering and how to search

the literature.

2) CHEM-702 (Structure and Reactivity)

This course includes the static and dynamic stereochemistry, stereoelectronic effects of

organic compounds, study and description of organic reaction mechanisms, mechanisms

of polar additions and elimination reactions, photochemistsry, aromaticity and anti-

aromaticity, pericyclic reactions, HSAB theory, structure and reactivity of carbocations,

reactive intermediates, free-radicals and molecular rearrangements.

3) CHEM-703 (Synthesis-I)

Designed to cover a broad range of organic reactions that includes oxidation, reduction of

carbonyl compounds and other functional groups, C-C bond forming reactions (Aldol

reaction, Manich reaction, Wittig reaction, Suzuki coupling, Stille coupling, Heck

reaction, Sonogashira coupling, Negishi coupling, Julia olefination, Peterson olefination

etc), also reactions forming C-C bond by the use of organoboron, organosilicon and

organotin compounds, aromatic electrophilic and nucleophilic substitutions, protecting

groups and syntheses via pericyclic reactions and organometallic compounds of the group

I, II and III. Finally the stereochemical considerations of all the mentioned reactions have

been studied extensively.

4) CHEM-704 (Synthesis-II)

This course serves to provide a broad understanding of the contemporary art of organic

synthesis, planning and execution of multi-step synthesis, functional group

interconversions and newer methods for the preparation of different functional groups,

asymmetric electrophilic additions to C-C multiple bonds, logic of chemical synthesis,

logical approach to asymmetric synthesis, natural products and their biosynthesis,

introduction to solid phase and combinatorial synthesis along with green chemistry.

During this course following natural products have been studied extensively;

Synthetic studies on Longifolene, Taxol, Juvabione, Epothilones A, B, C and D,

Callystatin A, Tetrodotoxin, Antascomicin B, Colchicine, and Prelog-Djerassi lactone.

Aspects in remote stereocontrol has also been studied extensively, especially the use of

chiral allyl stannanes, use of Claisen, Wittig rearrangements, and Iron carbonyl

complexes in acyclic polyene stereocontrol.

5) CHEM-801

Modern Mass Spectrometry and Solving Mass Spectrometric Problems. This course

covers all the advance techniques in Mass spectrometry including EI MS, FAB, EI, ESI,

FD, MALDI etc., with all the instrumentation and problem solving practices.

6) CHEM-805

Other Special Courses in Biochemistry and other Branches of Chemistry by leading

foreign and Pakistani Speakers.

7) CHEM-806
