1.0 INTRODUCTION TO STUDY

1.1 BACKGROUND OF PULAU LANGKAWI

Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah is an archipelago

of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of

northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is

adjacent to the Thai border. On 15 July 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had

consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction

with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the

eponymous Langkawi Island with a population of some 64,792 the only other

inhabited island being nearby Tuba Island. Langkawi is also an administrative

district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty free.

The name Langkawi is thought to have existed by early 15th century,

although in the 16th century the island of Langkawi was also marked on maps

variously as Langa, Langka, Lansura and Langapura. There are many

suggestions for the origin of the name of Langkawi. According to one

interpretation, Langkawi means island of the reddish-brown eagle in colloquial

Malay. The malay word for eagle is Helang which is shortened to “Lang” while

kawi is the name of a red stone used as a chalk to mark goods.

1.4 OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this project is to identify historic and cultural landscape characteristic in our proposed site location which Kampung

Ewa by conducting a cultural research. The next step is to evaluate the landscape based on the National Register criteria and

conducting the significant study.

1.5 ISSUES AND POTENTIAL

Kampung Ewa was divided into two region which Teluk Yu and Teluk Ewa where both of it has some issues that affect the

natural cultural landscape in the particular area. In order to solve the issues and identify the potential that be the significant of

Kampung Ewa itself, we have been evaluated the cultural landscape based on the National Register Buletin and conduct a

significant study. There is some of the issues that we found.

1. LAFARGE CEMENT FACTORY AFFECTS THE ENVIRONMENT QUALITY OF TELUK EWA

Lafarge Cement Factory is one of the area that dominated Teluk Ewa zones and it causes the air pollution that effect the

environment quality and the villager health due to the loading and unloading work from the factory itself.

2. THE ORIGINAL CULTURAL TRADITION HAS BEEN DIMINISHED

Once the place was full of traditions and beliefs that was part of the everyday life community but it is become diminished

where the local people does not appreciate the original cultural tradition of Kampung Ewa itself. There is no proper space

5.1 INTRODUCTION

Culture is related to the development of human attitude. Cultural values influence how that approach living.

According to the behaviorist definition of culture, it is the ultimate system of social control where people monitor their own

standards and behavior. Moreover, cultural values serve as the founding principles of life which shape human thinking,

behavior, and personality. Culture is a way of life that is growing and is jointly owned by a group of people and passed from

generation to generation. Culture is formed of many complicated elements, including religious and political systems,

customs, languages, tools, clothing, buildings, and works of art. Cultural traditions can be divided into two groups, the

intangible and tangible. Intangible is things we cannot see and cannot touch, Tangible is thing we can see and touch.

The importance of culture lies in its close association with the ways of thinking and living. Differences in cultures have

led to diversity in the people from different parts of the world. Cultural tradition also determined the structures of communities

by influencing the diversity of buildings, location of roads and villages centers, and ways of the land was worked.

9.0 BUILDING, STRUCTURES AND OBJECT

9.1 INTRODUCTION

Studies of buildings, structures and objects on the bottom of the crater village, Kampung Ewa to meet human needs

for employment and land use aspects such as function, materials, date, condition, location and construction methods to

reflect the historic activities, traditions, tastes and skills that build and use.

Building was been design for human protection including home, school, religious house, multipurpose hall and so on. is

a man-made structure with a roof and walls standing more or less permanently in one place, such as a house or the complex.

Buildings come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of

factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic

reasons. To better understand the term building compares the list of non-building structures.

Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather, security, living space, privacy, to store

belongings, and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat (a

place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful).

Structure was designed to function well such as protection enclosure systems, bridges, and highways. Moreover, is a

fundamental, tangible or intangible notion referring to the recognition, observation, nature, and structure permanence of

patterns and relationships of entities. This notion may itself be an object, such as a built structure, or an attribute, such as the

structure of society. From a child's verbal description of a snowflake, to the detailed scientific analysis of the properties of

magnetic fields, the concept of structure is now often an essential foundation of nearly every mode of inquiry and discovery

in science, philosophy, and art. In early 20th-century and earlier thought, form often plays a role comparable to that of

structure in contemporary thought.

The description of structure implicitly offers an account of what a system is made of: a configuration of items, a

collection of inter-related components or services. A structure may be a hierarchy (a cascade of one-to-many relationships),

a network featuring many-to-many links, or a lattice featuring connections between components that are neighbors in space.

An object is relatively smaller but is an important building including monuments, threshers, small boat and cider mills.

The study of the building is reflected in the architectural style. Architectural styles can be seen in the front view, left,

right and rear of the building, windows and sculptures on the building itself.

3.0 THEME AND CONCEPT

In order to preserve the Siamese cultural heritage in Kampung Ewa. I come up with the theme of community based tourism where I

would like to emphasis the interaction between the tourist with local people and tourist as the half of the community in Kampung

ewa by involving them with the Siamese cultural heritage through community activities. By theme of community based tourism, my

concept of preservation in this village is “Siamese Ambiance” where Siamese is defined as the nation of Siam or the tribe while

ambiance is directly defined as character or impression. So by the word “Siamese Ambiance”, I preserve the Siamese identity and

character through the local activities, architectural style and the cultural tradition in order to stimulate the appreciation and

admiration of Siamese character through local people. So that, the local people naturally influence the appreciation and

admiration of Siamese character through tourist and outsider.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This proposal is to developing Kampung Ewa as a Siamese village. The landscape planning are concentrated on revitalising

existing village in rejuvenate of the economic resources while to promoting cultural tourism activities based on the existing

activities. There are four significant elements that spots found in Kampung Ewa which are Lafarge cement factory, fishing village,

gamat farm and Felcra. The design proposal for the significant place based on the treatment ways and condition of the buildings.

There are four treatment that must be consider when doing the design proposal such as rehabilitation, reconstruction, restoration

and preservation.

2.0 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The study aims is to preserving cultural traditions and to restoring the character and image of a malay-siamese village in Kampung

Ewa. This research takes stride to determine the appropriate intervention prospectus on conserving cultural landscape and to show

the image and characteristics of Siamese culture. The onbjective of the study can divided into three:

1. To protect and preserve significant areas of Kampung Ewa that became the site for cultural activities of local community.

3.0 CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Considering the development theme of Kampung Ewa as a cultural conservation village, a conceptual development design a

proposal design proposal has been drawn based on the project aim and objectives will be set up in order to create the site issues

as determining the sustainable intervention of site. Then the conceptual development stage should be able to determine the

sustainable approaches of design that combine the zoning and recommendation to Kampung Ewa. The concept statement

revealed as the result of integrating the design solution.

The concept development based on social, economic, natural environment and historic of the village. The social is related to the

activities at fisherman jetty. The economic is based on the main resources and the alternative economic resources is former

(rubber plantation). The natural environment that need to be preserve which is gamat farm that have a potential value to them.

My theme used is “Community based-tourism” which refer to sharing the natural resources of a local community with visitors from

home and overseas for the sustainable benefit of that local community whilst conserving the natural, environment and respecting

the way of life.

“Siamese Diaspora” is the concept statement idelises by Kampung Ewa. Diaspora definitions is it signifies a group of people who

have been migrated and descendent who maintain a connection to their homeland. Diaspora in this context to bring back sense

of the identity and also to active the cultural to the place and activities which is Siamese culture. This concept divided into three

elements which are social, economy and environment. Social is to maintain and strengthen the local industry to showcase local

culture. Economy is to maintain and re-establishing social space to ensure the participation of all members of society to make the

village liveable. Environment is to preserve and restore the environment to create a safe and healthy atmosphere for locals.
