hese are three words that I wouldn’t normally
associate with the can industry. Eurocan spent six
months of last year working on the Tim Burton film
Dark Shadows. Managing director John Jenner and his
team were asked to provide can making equipment and
set up two canneries at Pinewood Studios. With the likes
of Johnny Depp and Eva Green on set I think it is fair to
say that it wasn’t a standard job. However the guys at
Eurocan took it all in their stride and are now hoping for a
sequel! Find out more on page 14.
Moving away from the film industry for a moment this
issue includes features on aluminium bottles, metal deco-
rating and caps and closures.
Aluminium bottles have grown in popularity over the
years and Ball is aiming to gain an increasing market share
throughout Europe. In many ways metal decorating and
bottle cans, as they are also known, go hand-in-hand. This
is because they offer customers an opportunity to really
promote their brands through design, shapes and sharp
graphics. All these things can help catch a consumer’s
attention at the point-of-sale. Often when a consumer
makes a decision about what product to buy they will go
back and buy it again.
Aluminium bottles add brand value and differentiation
– two major reasons why brand owners are increasingly
switching to them.
There are only a few presentation slots available at
the next Asia CanTech event in Bangkok, Thailand, so we
highly recommend booking as soon as possible. If you
prefer to promote your company through the tabletop
exhibition, the gold packages offer great opportunities.

News and views from the metal packaging industry
Permanent materials, including metals, have been recognised as a new resource category by the European Parliament. Industry body Metal Packaging Europe (MPE), which has worked hard to bring resource efficiency to the forefront of EU Policy, has wel-comed the move.
The European Parliament endorsed the European Commission’s Resource Efficiency Roadmap, specifically calling for ‘permanent materials’ to be made a new resource category. This category now works along-side the existing categories of ‘renewable’ and ‘non-renew-able’ resources.
The vote by the European Parliament officially recognises the positive contribution which infinitely recyclable permanent materials, such as metals used in
ETMA members elect new president Dr Monika Kopra-Schäfer has been appointed as the new president of the European Tube Manufacturers Association (ETMA).
Dr Kopra-Schäfer, who works for Linhardt, was elected to the post at this year’s ETMA congress in Brussels. In keeping with tradition, her predecessor, Martin Hintz from Albéa, is now vice-president of the association.
ETMA’s new president sees major challenges confronting the European tube industry and believes it will be difficult to repeat or better the record production of over 10.7 billion tubes achieved in 2011. Dr Kopra-Schäfer is particuarly concerned about the increasing cost burden facing the tube industry. “Sharp increases in the price of plastics, printing inks, lacquers and not least wages are increasingly squeezing the tube
Foil suppliers join AluproThe UK’s three major household foil suppliers have joined the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro).
They are also supporting the metal packaging recycling pro-gramme MetalMatters.
BacoFoil brand owner Wrap Film Systems, along with Netherlands-based foil and film supplier ITS and retail and catering foil supplier Wrapex are working with Alupro and MetalMatters to help custom-ers and users to recycle as much aluminium foil as possible. The sector takes its producer respon-sibility seriously and is keen to promote the recyclability of the product, both to customers and consumers.
Aluminium household foil can be recycled easily alongside food and drink cans and foil containers, and increasingly all of these materials
are being collected together in local authority kerbside recycling programmes.
Alupro executive director Rick Hindley said: “The environmental and financial benefits of recycling aluminium are well understood. Increasingly major industry players and brand owners see how Alupro membership, and supporting its industry-backed programmes like MetalMatters, can help them to ensure that more of the valuable aluminium found in items like cans, trays and foil is recycled.”
Developed and funded by the metal packaging manufacturing industry, reprocessors and fillers, MetalMatters helps local authori-ties and their waste collection part-ners to promote household metal packaging recycling, and increase the amount of metal packaging recycled in the home.
industry’s margins,” she says.Despite this, Dr Kopra-Schäfer
remains confident about the future. “The European tube manufacturers are well placed and will continue to maintain their strong position in the European packaging market in future thanks to their creativity and high levels of productivity.”
ETMA comprises a total of 52 tube manufacturers from 19 differ-ent countries. Its members account for about 75% of tube production in Europe.
EU recognises metals as ‘permanent material’
Concurrently the ‘permanent materials’ concept has officially been defined by British Standards as “materials for which efforts are made to retain for use in soci-ety the energy and raw materi-als invested in their production at the end of the product life, either through reuse or recycling, with no loss of quality no matter how many times the material is recycled.”
can making, can make to society.Decoupling resource use from
consumption is a key focus for Metal Packaging Europe, which comprises leaders from the major aluminium, steel and packaging converter companies.
Anders Linde (pictured), secre-tary general for MPE, welcomed the endorsement. He said: “The vote by the European Parliament is the first step towards recognis-ing the concept of permanent materials in EU policy. It will help create a true recycling society based on a closed material loop. “Metals are infinitely recyclable while preserving their virgin metal qualities – they have infinite recy-cling possibilities and have the abil-ity to constantly deliver new appli-cations in a permanent material loop without depleting the earth’s resources.”

Iñaki Llona has been appointed global business leader for Sun Chemical’s metal decorating inks business. Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC, are estab-
lishing a global metal decorat-ing inks business to build on the success already achieved in this growing prod-uct area, in-
cluding the integration during the last two years of the former metal decorating inks division of Valspar. Llona will be based at Sun Chemi-cal’s site in Bilbao, Spain.
Rexam has released its sustainabil-ity report for 2011/12.The report is available on the company’s website at www.rexam.com/sr11. It sets out 12 commitments, grouped around three themes, products, opera-tions and people that provide the framework for making Rexam a more sustainable business. Chief executive Graham Chip-chase said: “We are developing partnerships along the supply chain and it is important that our customers know they have a part-ner that is helping to drive change and who will collaborate with them on their own journeys as they drive sustainable change.”
The UK achieved the single big-gest annual increase in recycling rates for aluminium packaging and drinks cans in 2011.
Figures released by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) show that the recycling rate for all aluminium packaging has increased significantly – by more than 4% - putting the over-all recycling rate at 45%. Based on the industry’s own data, the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) has also confirmed that the UK achieved a recycling rate of 60% for drinks cans in 2011 – an increase of
Aluminium recycling rates reach record level in 2011
more than 6% from 2010. This is despite continued growth in sales of drinks cans and an increase in the amount of aluminium packag-ing on the market.
Commenting on the news, Alupro executive director Rick Hindley said: “The confirmation that recycling rates for drinks cans as well as aluminium packaging have increased so dramatically is welcome news for the industry.
“It follows a period of significant activity and investment to boost recycling participation and cap-ture rates for aluminium, and all metal packaging, and reflects an increasing awareness of the eco-
nomic value of recycling alumini-um packaging, and the contribu-tion it can make to the viability of a recycling programme. Industry funded programmes such as Every Can Counts, Aerofoil and MetalMatters are delivering a shift in consumer behaviour.”
At a time when local authority budgets have been substantially reduced, the Aerofoil campaign helped many local authorities to expand their kerbside collec-tions. In total, 98 local authorities covering 5.8 million households expanded their collection sys-tems to include foil, aerosols or both materials.
Novelis has completed the sale of three European aluminium foil and packaging plants to Eurofoil, a unit of American Industrial Acquisition Corporation (AIAC).
The transaction includes foil roll-ing operations in Rugles, France; Dudelange, Luxembourg; and Berlin, Germany, which shall now operate, respectively, as Eurofoil France, Eurofoil Luxembourg, and Eurofoil Paper Coating.
“Although these plants no longer fit within the Novelis business strat-egy, they are good operations and I am pleased to see them move forward as part of AIAC,” says Tadeu Nardocci, senior vice presi-dent of Novelis and president of Novelis Europe. “Novelis is focused on growing in the premium mar-kets of beverage cans, automo-biles and speciality products, and on expanding its recycling leadership.”
Willem Loue, managing director of Eurofoil, added: “These opera-tions have a strong asset base, a skilled workforce and lead in the markets they serve. They enhance and fit well with AIAC’s growing portfolio of manufacturing opera-tions. While we are proud of the plants’ heritage within the major aluminium corporations, we now look forward to our future within the AIAC group of companies.”

Lightweight ends from RexamLightweight beverage can ends that offer savings of up to 10% are being produced at Rexam’s plant in Waterford, Ireland.
The plant is the first to pro-duce the lightweight ends, with production starting during the first quarter of 2012. While retaining the existing benefit of being 100% recy-clable, the ends use 10% less metal, compared with standard beverage can ends. The metal savings are achieved through a combination of a reduction in the blank diam-
eter of the end and the gauge of the metal. The Waterford plant will pro-duce 2.5 billion ends a year and a phased roll-out will also see Rexam’s Usine de Mont plant in the south of France adopt the tech-nology towards the end of 2012. This initial investment in lightweight ends is expected to save over 1,800 tonnes of metal per year.

Rexam has announced the proposed sale of its personal care business for $709 million (£452m) to Sun Capital and Silgan.
The business is being sold in two parts: the cosmetics, toiletries and household care products busi-ness (CTH) and the high barrier food packaging business (HBF). An affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, a private equity firm, has made a binding offer for CTH for a total of $459m in cash, subject to consulta-tion with various European works councils.
A subsidiary of Silgan Holdings, a leading US based supplier of pack-aging for consumer goods prod-
ucts, has agreed to acquire HBF for $250m in cash. Both transactions are subject to certain adjustments at completion.
The transactions are expected to complete in the third quarter for HBF and in the fourth for CTH. Both are conditional on certain regulatory approvals.
In total, the personal care busi-ness employs some 7,000 people in Europe, the US and Asia. In 2011, the business had sales of £502m and underlying operating profit of £38m before central overheads (CTH: £26m and HBF: £12m). As of 31 December 2011, it had gross assets of £650m (CTH: £611m and
HBF: £39m) and liabilities of £112m (CTH: £103m and HBF: £9m).
As a result of the sale, Rexam will carry out a restructuring pro-gramme to remove residual over-heads which, together with certain separation costs, will give rise to an exceptional charge of some £40m in 2012, of which £25m will be cash costs. Ongoing, there will be £7m of annual retained fixed costs which will be absorbed by the beverage cans and healthcare businesses.
Following completion, Rexam plans to return around £370m (at current exchange rates) to shareholders.

Packaging coatings merger referred to Competition CommissionThe Office of Fair Trading has referred AkzoNobel’s proposed takeover of Italian based pack-aging coatings producer Metlac to the Competition Commission. This follows OFT concerns that the merger may remove a competitive supplier from the market.
AkzoNobel and Metlac both manufacture and supply metal packaging coatings. These are used in the production of beverage and food cans. Between them, the parties supply around 40 to 50% of the European Economic Area (EEA) market. The OFT received a number
of third party concerns relating to the loss of Metlac as a competitor in the supply of metal packaging coatings.
The OFT’s investigation found that the merging parties are two of four main suppliers of metal packag-ing coatings in the EEA. Evidence considered by the OFT shows that Metlac represents a significant com-petitive constraint to AkzoNobel and is considered to be especially price competitive in the supply of metal packaging coatings by customers.
Ali Nikpay, OFT senior director and
decision maker in this case, said: “Metlac stands out as a particularly close competitor to AkzoNobel, the leading player, in this market A number of customers indicated that the removal of Metlac would eliminate a significant competitive constraint to AkzoNobel and would therefore result in price increases. The transaction will benefit from a more in-depth investigation by the Competition Commission to assess the competitive effects of taking Metlac out of the marketplace.” The Competition Commission is expect-ed to report by 6 November.

Recycling challenge rewards US cities
Novelis, a leading producer of rolled aluminium, has installed a pilot beverage can production line at its new research and tech-nology centre in the US.
The facility also includes a vari-ety of materials development and testing laboratories. Future plans include a small scale aluminium rolling mill, and heat treatment capabilities for finishing automo-tive aluminium sheet.
The 160,000-square-foot centre will serve as the global hub of the company’s extensive research and development activities.
“Innovation is the foundation of
our strategy and a critical driver of our growth,” says Jack Clark, chief technical officer. “It’s also one of the key components of achieving our commitment to having 80% recycled content across our prod-ucts by the year 2020. This new centre will help drive increased collaboration with our customers, enabling us to work side-by-side in developing innovative, sustain-able aluminium products.”
The state-of-the-art centre will be the critical focal point for all R&D within the company, focused on solutions for the company’s can, automotive and speciality
customers. It is also the central point for all of Novelis’ technical activities including engineering, manufacturing excellence and metallurgy.
The new centre is located in Kennesaw, Georgia, just north of the Novelis world headquar-ters in Atlanta. “The new Global Research and Technology Centre will bring together some of world’s leading metallurgists, materials scientists, engineers and technol-ogists all working for the benefit of Novelis’ customers across the globe,” adds Stefan Erdmann, vice president of global R&D. “The
centre will tackle challenges rang-ing from increasing fuel efficiency in automobiles to making con-sumer packaging and electronics products more sustainable.”
Novelis is partnering with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Southern Polytechnic State University on research opportuni-ties, recruitment and internships for the future generation of engi-neers. In addition to the global centre, Novelis has six satellite research and technology cen-tres worldwide including the US, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Korea.

Giant can sculptures displayed in LondonCanary Wharf hosted London’s first ever Canstruction compe-tition. The event saw leading architects and designers create giant sculptures from 40,000 cans of food throughout the busi-ness and shopping district, wowing the public and helping to feed people in need.
Internationally acclaimed firms worked against the clock and each other in an international design competition to create colossal ‘can’ sculptures.
Following the exhibition, all cans were collected and redistributed by the UK food charity FareShare to communities throughout the
capital. This was set to provide 6,000 sen-ior citizens, children, homeless and vulner-able people with up to 16 tonnes of canned food.
2012 is Canstruction’s 20th anniversary, hav-ing been successful in more than 170 cities throughout the world. It has grown to become
one of the largest drives for food bank donations, and celebrated with an inaugural event in London that coincided with the London Festival of Architecture. Sculptures adorned both the lobby of One Canada Square, Britain’s tallest skyscraper, and Canary Wharf’s shopping malls.
Cities across the US collected more than 114 million aluminium cans as part of the 2012 Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge.
The winners of the challenge were announced by the United States Conference of Mayors and Novelis, a leader in rolled alumin-ium products and aluminium can recycling.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, took first place in the ‘most cans collected’ category after amassing the most
aluminium beverage cans per capita with a total of 66.2. Overall the number of cans collected in the city was 39,393,259. The reward for coming first was a grant of $25,000.
Second and third places went to Richmond, Indiana, and University City, Missouri, which collected a total of 2,258,852 and 1,627,438 cans respectively. Their per capita figures were 61.4 and 46 and the cities received grants of $15,000 and $5,000 respectively.
Established in 2004, Cans for Cash is a national contest that rewards US cities for recycling aluminium beverage cans. Combined, cities that participated in the 2012 chal-lenge collected 114,284,354 alu-minium beverage cans during the challenge period.

July/August 2012 CanTech International 12
Figures released by Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME) show that cans have continued to gain an increasing share of the packaging mix during the first quarter of 2012.
After reporting strong full year results in 2011, the BCME results suggest that in the first quarter of 2012, can filling has not only maintained its growth from last year but has seen production rates accelerate. Both East and West Europe have contributed to the 7% jump in can shipments in the first three months of 2012 compared to the same period last year. The results highlight how the beverage can is win-ning over more of Europe’s consumers despite the testing trading environment.
Beer consumption in par-ticular has been vulnerable to Europe’s economic uncer-tainties but cans have again defied the statistics and big tax
rises in some important mar-kets to record a double digit rise in fillings so far this year. Of note has been the French and Portuguese beer can shipments increase of around a third and Denmark’s surge of almost a fifth. The Danish results reflect the strength of the border trade following the government’s size-able tax rise at the turn of the year. Much of the border trade is supplied from Denmark and is dominated by drinks packed in cans.
Can use in the soft drinks industry remains on an upward curve as well, with shipments rising by 3% during the open-ing months of the year. This rate would have been greater but for reversals in Poland and Portugal. The high profile imple-mentation of the soft drinks tax in France also looks to have impacted as well, prompting a small decline in France fur-
ther diluting the overall growth rate for the region. Once again the influence of the energy drink category is evident with Austrian and Swiss fillings up by 19%. There appears to be little sign of an end to the energy drink boom in Europe.
The results for both beer and soft drinks are undoubtedly upbeat but there are two fac-tors which may have amplified the results. An earlier Easter may have lifted the March results despite the actual holiday peri-od falling into the early part of the second quarter, while there is also likely to have been an upturn in fillings as the big soft drink and beer players pre-pared for the European Football Championships in Poland and the Ukraine and the Olympic Games in London. Both sporting spectacles should have a positive effect on beverage demand as a whole.
Cans continue to perform well
Crown Speciality Packaging North America teamed up with International Biscuit and Confections (IBC) to create a unique biscuit tin.
Crown partnered with IBC to build the packaging in the US for Loc Maria, a French biscuit brand, which was sold in club stores across North America during the holiday season.
Crown collaborated with IBC to create a shaped metal tin with an embossed design and finished in a rich red colour, creating a luxurious look and feel that reflected the premium quality of the cookies and max-imised shelf impact.
While the tin represented an entirely new design for IBC, the two companies have worked together in the past and Crown’s extensive range of standard toolsets and sizes had already been implemented into
its packaging lines.Confident in the
quality and depth of Crown’s support serv-ices due to the past relationship, IBC also chose Crown to be its co-packing partner in North America for Loc Maria cookies distrib-uted in the club store channel. “Retailers are always
looking for unique, premium brands that can help boost sales, especially during the holiday season. IBC is uniquely positioned to respond to that need, but it requires solid part-nerships to make it happen,” says Jill Short, vice president of sales, IBC.
“Crown worked closely with IBC to design a package that combined aesthetics and functionality and still achieved economies of scale, setting it up for success in a competi-tive marketplace,” adds Sheila Heath, director of marketing, Crown Speciality Packaging.

Metal packaging manufac-turer Massilly Group has further increased its presence in Russia after completing the purchase of the closure business from French glass producer Verallia.
Massilly signed the agreement with Verallia’s Russian subsidiary Kamyshinsky Steklotarny Zavod. The company will produce and sell metal closures from its Linar plant in the Stavropol region. The agreement signed by Kamyshinsky, a leader in the Russian market for production and sales of glass jars for food, establishes a cooperation peri-od of 18 months with Linar, the Russian subsidiary of Massilly.
“With this acquisition, Massilly follows its strategy to be a key player in all fields of metal packaging and to develop its industrial footprint in the regions of the world showing a signifi-cant potential for growth,” says Thomas Bindschedler, Massilly Group CEO.“

Can making machinery supplied by Eurocan plays
a starring role in the feature film Dark Shadows.
The film is directed by Tim Burton and stars
Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, a vampire who was
imprisoned in a coffin but is unearthed and returns
to his mansion now inhabited by his descendants.
He soon runs into trouble revitalising the family’s
canned fish business, as his jealous ex-flame
and imprisoner Angelique Bouchard, played
by Eva Green, runs the rival company.
Eurocan, a UK supplier of can making
machinery, was approached by the film’s set
decorator Mike Standish and asked to sup-
ply and set up equipment for two canneries,
which were installed at the famous Pinewood
Studios. In the film they are known as the Collins
and Angelbay canneries.
“We received a call out of the blue and initially I didn’t
take him (Mike Standish) seriously,” explains John Jenner,
Eurocan’s managing director. “We played along and he
asked to come along and see some equipment in the
workshop. We arranged for this to happen at our site in
Worcester. We then sat down with him and got some more
details. They then went up to an international fish can-
nery in Scotland where they had some of our equipment
running. We told them that we have a great customer in
Scotland and that everything up there would be what they
were looking for. It was perfect; except the decision was
made that they didn’t want to film any of this outside of
Pinewood. The next remit was ‘We’ve seen what we want,
build it for us in Pinewood’.”
During one scene, the film cuts to inside the Collins fish
cannery and a can seamer jumps into life, followed by a

makes contact. The resulting fire and explosion, with
cans raining down on cars and in the street outside
of the cannery, is Angelique’s revenge for yet again
being spurned by vampire Barnabas Collins.
The real star of this scene is the Metal Box 10-6C
seamer cursed by Angelique – although the actual
villain that emits the magical spark is in fact a 1A
seamer. This close-up shot was originally mocked up
at Eurocan’s workshop, and then developed by the
film’s special effects engineers. To create the spark, both
the first and second operation seaming rolls on the 1A
seamer were drilled and fitted with flints, and prevented
from rotating, so that during the seaming operation the
flints contact the revolving chuck and create the spark.
Making moviesEurocan worked on the Warner Bros movie over a period
of six months during the spring and summer of 2011 at
Pinewood Studios, where the whole Collinsport town and
harbour was constructed – the largest outside set ever
created at Pinewood.
“We identified an old meat cannery in Ireland that was
idle. We took them across to Ireland and showed them
around this cannery,” adds Jenner. “We told them that a
lot of equipment in the cannery would suit what they were
looking for. Eventually we sat down with the production
team, the art director and the designers and worked out
a brief.”
Jenner also got the opportunity to meet the stars of
the film. “The first person that I met was Eva Green,”
he notes. “She came walking down the set one day in
costume. We exchanged courtesies but I had no idea
who she was at the time!” Jenner also met Johnny
Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Overall, he enjoyed
the experience and is now hoping for a sequel. “It was
fun to do, we made some money out of it and it’s got
the can industry into the movies, which is pretty unique.
However, we’d do it better next time.”
Jenner and his team were invited to a cast and crew
screening in Leicester Square, London.
“The first time I saw it I didn’t really enjoy it because I
think I’d been anticipating it too much,” he states. “You
probably only see around 20 per cent of what we actu-
ally installed. We then took a party out to see the film
and I enjoyed it much more the second time around.
The can industry isn’t often in the limelight. Although
the work we did doesn’t feature massively in the film,
I think it’s great that there is a movie that features
canneries and cans.”
A third canneryEventually there turned out to be a third set to create,
the derelict Collins cannery before Barnabas starts his
modernising project to compete with Angelbay. “That
was the easier challenge,” remarked Jenner. “We had
enough equipment in our warehouse of perfect age and
condition to suit, complete with rusty cans, dust, grime and
cobwebs.”
A 1970s Metal Box 08-10 seamer was uplifted and put
straight on the set, although only a fleeting look inside the
door of the cannery survived Tim Burton’s editing.
Despite the detailed planning, research, construction
and setup that was involved in the project, the equipment
inside the canneries features for less than a minute in the
film. After travelling the length and breadth of the UK and
Ireland with Mike Standish and the film’s art directors Neil
Callow and Dean Clegg, Eurocan was tasked with pur-
chasing equipment and configuring it into working systems
at Pinewood Studios. The list of equipment was endless and
included wet fish chutes and conveyors, washers, nobbing
and packing stations, overhead empty can cable convey-
ing, can seamers, retorts, tray packing and conveying.
The lead engineer at Pinewood for Eurocan was
Brian Matthews, with a crew that included mechanical,
conveying and electrical engineers who were all
present at various times during filming.

and included open top
cans, closed bright cans
and labelled cans.
Everyday businessAway from the business of
helping to make movies,
Eurocan has established
itself as a reputable supplier
to the can making industry.
The company was established
in 1994. Its founder, John Jenner,
already had a wealth of experience
in can making machinery in both the
technical and sales fields. He has worked for a
variety of companies including MetalBox and
CMB Engineering.
Eurocan has a strong presence in
the international used equipment
market, specialising in machinery of
European manufacture for welded
can and end production.
Jenner says the used equipment mar-
ket has changed dramatically over the
years. “There is always a
demand for good
quality used can
making machinery.
However, the industry has
become far more educat-
ed. People understand the
asset value of their surplus equip-
ment. It’s no longer viable to go in
somewhere and buy everything lock, stock
and barrel. I think we were one of the pioneers that quickly
realised that you couldn’t just keep filling a warehouse. We
pioneered the brokerage approach that meant
you will get far more value for your asset if you
allow us to manage the disposal. What we try
and do now is communicate with the can
makers and start managing that asset disposal
right from the front end when the equipment
is still on-line and running. That is the moment
when we can achieve the best re-sale value
for it.”
As a result of this the company closed all of its warehous-
ing and now has a handful of machines that it keeps in
its workshop.
“There are companies that still follow that model. It’s
their model and it works for them. We don’t feel it works
for us because it is a balance for us where our reputation
is now much more about re-building new equipment
than it is about a large shed full of redundant machin-
ery. We needed to move away from that image but
didn’t want to lose the association and value of the used
machinery market.”
From used to newThe firm’s range of new equipment, built in-house to high
standards, has an emphasis on compound lining and
double seaming. The 686 Dual Liner, EF Compound Guns,
1A Can Seamer and TAJ Seamer Tooling are employed
in factories worldwide by multinational and smaller
independent companies.
The company’s single-head 1A Can Closing Machine,
which replicates the rotating can seaming process of
fully automatic multi-head seamers, has proved popular
for low speed semi-automatic production and laboratory
work. Formerly produced for many years by The Metal Box
Company, Eurocan re-launched this model thanks to its
continuing popularity and the scarcity of used machines.
The company has rebuilt dozens of low-speed seamers
for low-speed applications over the years. However, the
company recently identified a gap in the market and has
been working on a new system.
“The Linear Seamer is an all stainless modular can clos-
ing machine designed as a cost effective solution for low
speed can making and canning applications,” explains
Jenner. “The first seamer in the world to be designed with
a straight line can transfer system, the Linear Seamer can
be supplied with one to six seaming heads for production
speeds of up to 100 cpm. The modular seaming head,
based on the successful 1A seaming head design, produc-
es consistent food quality double seams as a result of the
high number of first and second operation can revolutions
unique to this design.”
Dedicated end feedCans are fed into the machine via a timing spiral and
pitched onto a stainless steel horizontal feed chain with a
servo motor drive system. As a can comes to rest under the
seaming head, the pneumatically actuated lifter raises the
can up through the pocket of the end feed turret to pick-
up the end and clamp it on the seaming chuck.
Each seaming head has a dedicated end feed unit and
transfer turret which is pneumatically indexed in sequence
with the can feed chain.
Compatible with tinplate, aluminium, paperboard or
plastic cans and ends, the Linear Seamer is offered for vac-
uum, nitrogen gassing, vacuum and gassing, and standard
atmospheric can closing applications. “Can makers and
canners the world over have long sought a reasonably
priced solution for low speed food grade seaming applica-
tions, and have mainly turned to the second-hand market
and lived with the frustrations and compromises of old
design machines which do not comply with current food
safety standards, simply to meet their budget constraints,”
adds Jenner. “The Linear Seamer is a modern high quality
food safe machine, sold with only the number of seaming
heads required for the specified production speed, at an
equivalent cost basis to a second-hand machine.” ❑
PromoCanActing as the sister company of
Eurocan, Promocan supplies a wide range
of British made promotional and novelty can

A s with all forms of packaging, metal packaging
is subject to various trends and challenges as the
market as well as consumer demands change.
With the increase in the number of food packaging
migration alerts in recent times, highlighted by several
high profile product withdrawals from supermarket
shelves, the challenge of designing and produc-
ing compliant food packaging has become a key
industry issue. While market awareness of the issues
surrounding migration from packaging has generally
been increasing on a global basis, Sun Chemical has
been promoting the use of low migration offset print-
ing technology for use on packaging for more than
25 years.
As consumer awareness on such an emotive subject
also increases, pressures on brands and their suppliers in
turn, will continue to increase.
As a responsible and leading player in setting the
standard for good practices in the packaging industry,
Sun Chemical takes its product stewardship role in the
packaging design and production workflow very seriously.
With ongoing reviews of existing food packaging regu-
lations and guidelines by regulatory bodies and brand
owners, all suppliers to the industry must keep track of
changes, updates and additions. Consumer safety
is paramount and as new research becomes
available that helps us understand some of
the complicated issues, products that
are available to the market should
be aligned.
In order to support its customer
with competitive solutions that
meet all legislative and regula-
tory requirements, Sun Chemical
has been busy upgrading its
product offering. It is essential
to offer customers product solu-
tions that are both Bisphenol A NI
and free from mineral oils, and Sun
Chemical is able to offer dedicated
products that meet these requirements.
All of its products for beer and beverage
cans are therefore BPA NI.
Printer converters can now
also benefit from Sun Chemical’s
conventional ink ranges, SunTrio Daimetal and SunTrio
Toba, which are both mineral oil and cobalt free. The
SunTrio Daicure 5LM range complies with all the Nestlé
requirements for food packaging, is exempt from BPA and
delivers improved press performance, which therefore
makes it one of Sun Chemical’s best in class products
where set-off might occur.
Nestlé has recently updated its guidelines as they
are becoming a standard across the industry and Sun
Chemical is committed to formulating all its products to
follow these guidelines.
SustainabilityWith consumers becoming increasingly aware of the
green agenda and their personal carbon footprint, the
spotlight has also turned to packaging. It is this awareness,
and not necessarily understanding, that sometimes drives
consumer preferences and ultimately brand owner strate-
gies. Today many brand owners are already communicat-
ing their packaging reduction achievements, telling their
green tales of sustainability success and claiming carbon
footprint data to excite the green consumer.
As an ink manufacturer, the contribution to packaging
“being green” is inherently limited, when you consider ink
in the overall construction of a pack and its contribution
to the carbon footprint, is stated as one to three per cent

by the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) (17 June
2010). That is not to say that all suppliers in the packaging
chain don’t have a role in developing a sustainable and
eco-efficient packaging industry. The ink industry today is
producing inks based on vegetable oils as opposed to min-
eral oils and developing inks based on natural and organic
pigments as well as growing water based over solvent
based businesses and reducing VOCs. Nevertheless, there
remains plenty of opportunities to improve.
Leading established players in the metal packaging
industry continue to focus heavily on their green creden-
tials and overall sustainability performance. This also often
plays a role when companies look for partners to work
with. Sun Chemical recently released its 2011 sustainability
report. While the company continues to be data-driven
in its sustainability efforts by reporting the performance
measurement for seven key sustainability metrics as
outlined in its previous reports, the 2011 report expands
on this commitment by citing specific examples of how its
products, services and projects are helping customers
CarnaudMetalbox Engineering (CMB), a leading manu-facturer of can making technology, has launched the Sovereign Decorator.
The can decorating machine, which uses up to eight colours, has been engineered to produce decorated beverage cans at high speed. It is designed to reduce changeover time for can manufacturers who produce high volumes of cans in short runs while minimising spoilage and saving ink.
Using unique, oscillating rubber rollers the decorator offers smooth and even printing. It has an innovative linear bearing spindle disc design that applies consistent mandrel-to-blanket pressure to the can surface during the printing process, maintaining a high print quality. The deco-rator inkers also feature anti-ghosting rollers, eliminating the occurrence of ghosted images.
For added flexibility and efficiency on the produc-tion line, the Sovereign Decorator features an innovative infeed and outfeed design that improves the loading and discharge of cans, increasing throughput speeds and simplifying can size changeovers for operators. The rollers can be programmed for new inks and graphics using a library of printing recipes to facilitate fast, straightforward label changes.
The Sovereign Decorator has several features to reduce ink and spoilage. If the can is not correctly aligned, the automated rejection system removes it from the produc-tion line before the printing process, minimising the number of incorrectly decorated cans. “It’s no question that the marketplace for beverages is fiercely competitive. Until now, beverage can manufacturers either had to sacrifice print quality for speed or efficiency for superior aesthetics. The Sovereign Decorator changes that, letting our custom-ers have the best of both worlds,” says Jim Cozier, general manager, CarnaudMetalbox Engineering.
Stolle is offering an upgrade for its Rutherford Decorator – an innovative high performance inker that offers sig-nificant new ways to improve print quality, provide easier operation and extend component life.
This inker features a new design of the plate cylinder shaft and drive and the ink station. Here are the highlights of these components:
Plate cylinder shaft and drive redesignThe plate cylinder shaft and drive are now separate from the ink station, which allows an ink station to be quickly removed from the decorator with-out loss of plate timing. The plate cylinder assembly is rigidly and semi-permanently mounted to the decorator, which means the blanket timing is not affected when the inker is removed. Adjustment for side-lay and circumferential registration can be made while the decorator is in opera-tion (running registration), and the plate-to-blanket pressure can be adjusted while the machine is operating.
All ink station adjustments are now acces-sible from the operator side of the inker, and all the adjustments are available during machine operation. The new High Performance Inker can be retrofitted to any eight-colour Rutherford Decorator (some rework will be required).
Ink station improvementsThe new ink station features a rigid two-frame design for longer life of bearings and shafts. In addition, the ink train has been simplified resulting in a more compact size and energy efficient operation. Despite the more compact size, the ink foun-tain has been enlarged with 40 per cent more ink capacity. The new high capacity ink fountain features a removable ink tray, eight key segmented blade for more accu-rate adjustment, no-leak side cheek seals to the fountain roll plus quick release latches that allow easy removal of the fountain from the ink station.
improve their environmental impact.
This data-driven approach in the policy means Sun
Chemical will be able to set improvement targets for its
processes on energy and water consumption, greenhouse
gas emissions, and solid waste emissions. It will also devel-
op products with a structured approach that includes
risk management and eco-efficiency improvements
as criteria.
Special effectsTo add value to product solutions for metal decorat-
ing, inks are key to creating special effects for on-shelf
differentiation. A few new developments for metal
decorating special effects include:
• An enhanced tactile ink now available for a more coarse
reticulation effect on two piece cans.
• Further development and extension of the thermo-
chromics inks range that expands the colour range as well
as the colour-to-colour portfolio.
• New Pearl inks are available for most metal packaging.

Aluminium bottles
Ball Aerocan announced that it would start
producing aluminium bottles for the European
market earlier this year.
Aluminium bottles are not as popular in Europe as
they are in the US, but Thomas Haensch, vice president
sales, marketing and innovation at Ball Packaging Europe
believes this will change.
That’s why the company made the decision to start
producing them at its Ball Aerocan plant in Velim in the
Czech Republic. Ball Corporation completed the acquisi-
tion of Aerocan at the start of 2011 and it was renamed
Ball Aerocan. “The popularity of aluminium bottles in the
US is still increasing and will definitely increase in Europe,”
says Haensch. “Since the bottles are not yet very popular
in Europe, this offers a brand the opportunity to stand out
from the crowd and support the brand’s premium qual-
ity image. Being the first brand filled in aluminium bottles
means additional differentation potential on the shelf.
That’s why we see high potential for the aluminium bottle,
especially in the premium beer segment.”
The premium marketBall is currently able to produce extruded bottles in 33 and
50cl sizes.
“They will be produced on a so-called swing line,” adds
Haensch. “This means that depending on demand this line
can produce aluminium bottles or aerosol cans.”
The highest demand for aluminium bottles comes from
premium brands which want their products to stand out
from the crowd at the point of sale.
“They use the aluminium bottle as a key differentiator
from competitors since the megatrend of “premium-
isation” has already reached the beverage market,”
explains Haensch. “This means selling a product in the
high price segment can be used as a point of differen-
tiation. The trend implies a move away from basic needs
towards consumption based increasingly on aesthetics.
Functionality – alone – is no longer enough. A growing
importance of immaterial benefits can be observed. For
these reasons aluminium bottles are so far mostly used for
premium brands, most of them in the beer segment.”
Haensch says the growing polarization of consumption,
markets and society also sets the trend for further premiu-
misation.
“Middle markets have come under strong pressure
from low priced/discount products on the one side and
high priced/premium products on the other side,” he
notes. “Differentation followed these poles of discount vs
premium. In addition, it is becoming increasingly difficult

recycled material.
The new technology, which is known as ReAl
can technology, enables the use of recycled
aluminium in the manufacture of extruded alu-
minium packaging for aerosols. The resulting new
metal alloy exhibits increased strength and
allows lightweighting of the container without
affecting package integrity. Ball’s technol-
ogy breakthrough will allow the company
to lightweight its extruded aluminium aero-
sol packaging by as much as 10 per cent,
with further lightweighting expected in the
future.
Supplying the marketBall Aerocan supplies most major brands
in the personal care sector. “The big-
gest European aerosol can market is the
UK followed by Germany and France,”
explains Aliprandi. “Traditionally they have
been the countries leading aerosol filling in
Europe. It comes from the early develop-
ment of that form of packaging for various
applications.”
While the personal care sector remains
the largest market segment for aerosols,
other emerging or recent market develop-
ments include aerosol can launches for suntan products,
nasal sprays, depilatory creams and dry shampoo.
“Brands clearly play a major role; the consumer identifies
with a brand and is usually loyal to that brand,” remarks
Aliprandi. “At the same time, top quality graphic design,
combined with an embossed or shaped can from Ball
Aerocan will capture consumer attention and can sway
choice from one can to another.” ❑

to generalise about consumer target groups. Well-off con-
sumers shop at discounters and those with lower incomes
occasionally treat themselves with expensive indulgences.
Notions of which products are “necessary” and which
are “extra” are continously evolving. Sub-trends are the
preference for products with authenticity and heritage.
This means the “premium packaging” segment surely
will increase, but it’s difficult to predict to what extent.
Depending on demand Ball is able to increase the produc-
tion of aluminium bottles if required.”
AdvantagesHaensch points to some of the main advantages offered
by aluminium bottles and the reasons why more consumers
are choosing them.
“Among society a megatrend towards premiumisation is
further developing. The developments in consumer goods
markets are mirroring these developments in society,”
states Haensch. “In the beverage industry producers pick
up this trend to differentiate their brands from competitors.
As a method of choice they focus on the packaging of
their brands. The “perceived” quality becomes more and
more important. It is associated with products of strong
build quality, weight/robustness, quality materials, surfaces
and moving parts with an appealing level of resistance.
“Ball’s aluminium bottle communicates all these aspects,
combined in one product. It is an innovative lifestyle
package which is ideal for clubs, bars and a high level
introduction/promotion of a beverage brand in saturated
markets. With its high quality appearance the aluminium
bottle attracts the attention of the modern customer.
Extraordinary graphics and the possibility to print the neck
offer great creative design options. This results in high
differentiation at the point of sale. The aluminium bottle
promotes the message ‘VIP brand for VIP consumers’.
AerosolsBefore the acquisition of Aerocan, Ball did not have a pres-
ence in the aerosol market in Europe. It previously focused
on the North and South American markets.
“Ball’s main activity was centered around beverage
cans, so this acquisition broadened Ball’s European pack-
aging portfolio,” states Giorgio Aliprandi, managing direc-
tor of Ball Aerocan. “Ball’s main focus has been to ensure
continued responsiveness, quality and service to its alumin-
ium aerosol can customers along with bringing renewed
efforts in innovation and package development.”
Marketers are always looking to successfully differ-
entiate aerosols in the same way as aluminium bottles.
“Shaped or embossed aluminium aerosol cans allow them
to accomplish this,” notes Aliprandi. “Ball Aerocan has
also launched some standard shaped/embossed cans for
smaller, regional customers, providing them the opportunity
for more affordable, yet premium differentiation. The latest
development has been the investment in and successful
commercialisation of new manufacturing technologies to
make full-body shaped cans.”
Ball recently developed a metal technology break-
through – an extruded aluminium can that contains
Ardagh updateArdagh Group completed the purchase of the Boxal group of companies from Exal Corporation in a deal worth around €85 million in March this year.
Ardagh’s latest acquistion means they are now a technically advanced aluminium container manufacturer supplying aerosols and bottles to a wide a variety of industries including cosmetics, pharmaceutical, food and beverages. Boxal is a recognised world leader in aluminium packaging solutions with manufacturing plants principally in France and the Netherlands.
“The acquisition of Boxal has given Ardagh its first manufacturing capability in alu-minium bottles in Europe, although we have an existing presence in Australia,” says Niall Wall, Ardagh Group CEO. “We see it as a growth market for the group. At Ardagh, we place an emphasis on innovation and one of the attractions of Boxal was that it has driven innovation in that field with new technologies and adapted capacities to mar-ket demand. Our aluminium bottles are tailored for a broad range of beverage sectors including beer, cider, carbonated soft drinks, energy, wine and dairy. The bottles are focused in the premium end of their markets with an emphasis on superior print and design. In terms of emerging global trends, consumers like products and brands that have a clear differentiation.”
Ardagh Group is a global leader in rigid packaging, producing metal and glass packaging solutions for most of the world’s leading food, beverage and consumer product brands. It operates 91 manufacturing plants in 25 countries, employs approxi-mately 15,000 people and has global sales of €3.45 billion.
The new technology, which is known as ReAl
can technology, enables the use of recycled
aluminium in the manufacture of extruded alu-
minium packaging for aerosols. The resulting new
metal alloy exhibits increased strength and

Mobile canning
It’s summer, and you know what that means
– more fun in the sun. If you are playing outside,
chances are there is a can of cold beer in your hand.
But why cans? The reason for this is simple: cans play more
places. Previously there were few canned beer options,
however the reality is changing as more craft breweries
make their beer available in cans.
According to Bloomberg, almost 53 per cent of beer
consumed in 2011 was served in an aluminium can.
Luckily, it’s not just macro breweries choosing to package
their beer in cans. Canned craft beer is becoming more
commonplace in the market. At the latest count, CraftCans.
com lists 184 breweries offering 556 canned craft beers.
However, this can craze is more than just a trendy
packaging choice, it’s also good for beer. Aluminium gets
colder quicker and can chill beer faster than bottles. Also,
cans protect the beer in a way bottles can’t, keeping UV
light and oxygen out. Recyclability also plays a large role
in the allure of cans.
Choosing cansAs more craft brewers choose to can their
beers, the demand for this packaging
increases. Sales of craft beer cans are
increasing, and have experienced a
significant spike in growth from 2008 to
today. This upward trend is expected to
continue as it becomes easier for brewer-
ies to access the equipment necessary for
canning. However, this packaging solution is not
an option for all breweries. The high minimum orders
required to purchase aluminium cans coupled with space
constraints make it difficult for many small brewers to
access this growing market. In an effort to extend this
packaging option to more craft breweries, The Can Van
was created.
The Can Van, led by Jenn Coyle and Lindsey Herrema,
offers brewers a convenient and cost-effective way to
access the growing market for canned craft beer. This
mobile service brings canning equipment to the brewery.
Without the need to invest upfront capital or tie up limited
brewery space, customers can begin canning right away.
Low minimum orders and custom labelling make it possible
to can small batches, seasonal beers or special releases.
The Can Van uses a canning line created by Wild Goose
Canning, located in Boulder, Colorado. This Micro-Can
system has four filler heads and runs as fast as 36 12oz cans
per minute. It can also package 16oz cans.
The Can Van’s service has been warmly received,
and is working with a dozen clients, including Devil’s
Canyon Brewing Company, Pacific Brewing
Laboratory, and Mill Valley Beerworks. Currently The
Can Van operates out of Belmont, California and
services the Bay Area. However, it is actively pursuing
opportunities to extend its service area. As the craft
beer market steadily grows, demand for canned craft
beer increases as well. Making it easy for small breweries
to access more packaging choices facilitates a larger
impact – the ability for people to support local breweries
while drinking more beer in more places. ❑

In this article I wish to discuss lightweight-
ing, downgauging, metal reduction, call
it what you want, but basically it means
taking material out of a can or end. I often get
asked “how much more material can be taken
out of the can or end” or “are we at the end of
lightweighting yet?” My most common response is “we
are not there yet, there is plenty more meat on the bone”,
so to speak. Whilst it is easy for me to say that, we still need
the fillers to fill these products at high speed with high effi-
ciency and for them to be able to present their products
to consumers in good condition.
The diagram below shows a typical example of where
can makers have come from in terms of one specific can
size. You can see the very thick cans we used to make 20
years ago, however we continue to challenge and move
forward proactively with our customer base.
During this challenge we get the normal acceptance
by the commercial groups to move forward but then
we come to the technical part, the filling, seaming and
packaging of these lighter cans.
The challengeA good target for any can supplier is to share the next steps
of metal reduction with the machine suppliers in advance,
(such as Ferrum, KHS, Krones, PSAngelus etc) so that these
Lightweighting
suppliers know what is coming onto the market in the next
few years and can prepare their equipment to take these
lighter cans.
In preparation for light can filling an audit must be done
of the current filling line to be used. Special attention must
be made to the following areas:
• Side guide rails must always be set at the can’s strongest
point, the shoulder and chime. Also in multiple height filling
lines a third guide rail must be installed to control the can
too, alternatively a full height guide rail can be utilised
• Side guides set at the nesting pattern +3mm to allow
smooth flow
• The combiners from mass to single infeed to the rinsers
must also have their guide rails set. Either the slat or air con-
veyor speeds are critical to control the combiners smoothly
to apply less side pressure
• Pressureless corners can be used as a better way to
transport cans around a filling line as they take pressure off

this then prevents can damage as wel
• Also during filled can handling inside packaging
machine guides should always be set at the strongest point
of the can.
In all can handling areas we must always concentrate
on using the strongest point of the can. Guide rails which
contact the can in the mid wall will always be susceptible
to damaging the can, it may seem easier to control the
can but it is not effective. A creased can could lead to
leakage and furthermore secondary corrosion which is
a bigger headache in itself. We can go on throughout
the filling line using this practice but one can get all these
exact details through using BCME’s ‘Filling line can han-
dling best practices’ book. This is available from your local
supplier or via the Ball website www.ball-europe.com
Not the end of the lineIn the past, once a new lighter can has reached the end
of the filling line, some customers have agreed that the
can has passed a trial and is therefore approved. It is
not always the case nowadays. We, as committed can
suppliers, must work with the filler to ensure the can works
throughout the whole supply chain. This is why the trial
should incorporate filled cans transportation to the end
user. This may include audits of the filled can warehouses,
training of personnel to handle cans more effectively, bet-
ter stacking techniques etc. Simple I know, but you do see
lots of errors. The ultimate goal is to get people to under-
stand that the can is not a brick anymore but an efficient
light package. The BCME also has a booklet called ‘Can
handling recommendations’ which includes advice on
filled can transportation.
The final packageSo the can maker has made progress to lighten the can
and challenge some existing parameters. For example
axial load from 800 newtons to 500 newtons, side walls
thickness from 0.110 to 0.094mm, and gauge reduction
from 0.260 to 0.242mm. All have one thing in common and
that is to make the can more sustainable. Let us remember
in this Olympic year that going green is the new Gold!
If you have a question then please email me at stephen.
[email protected]. I will collate the best ones and answer
them in my next article, which will be my last. ❑

Decorative cans
With the global economic downturn affecting
import orders from many European buyers this
year, decorative can producers need to cut
production costs to fend off competition from other pack-
aging materials. These include folding paper cartons and
plastic containers, as customers consider alternative ways
of lowering packaging costs.
For Jef Can, one of several leading Hong Kong-based
decorative can makers with production facilities in south-
ern China, reducing the number of production steps in the
can making process is one of several ways the company is
trying to cut the overall cost of can manufacturing.
“The cost of production is a big challenge. We are
always thinking how to reduce costs,” comments general
manager, Betty Lam. “The Euro exchange rate is a problem
for many European customers, so we try to reduce the
number of production steps in the can forming process to
reduce the number of workers we use for can forming.
“To do this we try to design more multi-functional can
forming moulds; so that one mould can do two production
stages rather than just one stage. With more simple can
body shapes, for example, we can reduce can forming
from 10 steps to eight. More complex can designs involve
more production stages.”
Southern China is the world’s leading production
centre for decorative cans, most of which are made of
tinplate. Around 20 Hong Kong-owned factories produce
fancy tinplate cans in Guangdong Province in southern
China along with a smaller number of Taiwanese tin box
companies.
The number of local mainland-owned decorative can
factories is thought to be far higher with as many as 200
producers of various sizes estimated to be in Guangdong
Province alone. Only a small number of locally owned fac-
tories involved in decorative can production are believed
to be fully integrated. Most specialise in either can body
forming or in can body printing rather than both body
forming and printing processes.
The export marketMost decorative cans made by Jef Can and other com-
petitors are produced for export though the number of
fancy cans used in China is growing as economic growth
increases domestic spending power and the market for
attractively packed goods increases.
The period from May to October each year is Jef’s peak
production period as most export orders received are for
cans to be sold during the Christmas and New Year season.
Most fancy cans produced during other months of the
year are for regular packaging use.
According to Lam, around 70 per cent of Jef’s decora-
tive cans are shipped to Europe while about 10 per cent
are supplied to the US. The remaining 20 per cent of pro-
duction is supplied to buyers in Asia including Japan and
to the Middle East market including Dubai.
“We exhibit a lot in Europe in France and Germany.
Thanks to the 2012 Olympic Games we are doing a lot of
decorative cans for the gift market this year,” Lam adds.
“Customers are trying to sell a lot of cans and we have
made a lot of souvenir cans this year. For the Olympics
we are doing regular decorative can shapes with print-
ed London 2012 theme designs; for example, miniature
London icon tins for filling with tea, confectionery and
other items for sales in gift sets in souvenir shops.”
London iconic can designs supplied include Big Ben, red
telephone boxes, guard boxes at Buckingham Palace, red
pillar boxes and others.
“The UK market is very good this year compared with
Colourful cans

other European markets,” Lam notes. “Our customers also
ordered in advance for the Royal Jubilee celebrations
and then kept on ordering extra cans for the celebrations
this year. We supply the decorative tins empty for filling in
Britain for clients including Fortnum & Mason and Harrods.
We supply to the companies who supply them with tea,
biscuits and confectionery.”
Jef Can set up MJ Tin Can Factory as a Hong Kong-
China joint venture in 2001 in Shenzhen, in neighbouring
Guangdong Province across the border from Hong Kong.
The 8,000 square metre factory employs 350 workers and is
equipped with around 250 Chinese-made semi-automatic
can body and lid forming machines.
“Decorative can manufacturing is a traditional business.
We have not seen new production equipment in this mar-
ket in recent years,” Lam says. “Decorative can forming is
a very skilled process. We use a lot of labour; that’s why we
try to retain as many of our workers as possible.”
Working a two shift, five-day week MJ Tin Can Factory
produces around two million cans each month. Working
shifts and factory working days are increased for peak
period production when up to 2.5 million cans are
produced each month.
“Business was stable in 2011 as we have a lot of regular
customers; this is important. For this year we are looking to
supply the same number of cans overall,” Lam says.
“Our new market is Eastern Europe supplying countries
like Russia, Romania and the Czech Republic. They buy a
lot of decorative cans. Tea caddies are a big market for
fancy cans there.”
Can body mouldsThe company has around 800 can
body moulds. About 20 per cent
are exclusive for individual
customers. “Usually the can
shape is exclusive to a cus-
tomer. This includes special
embossing on the can as
well,” states Lam. “Usually
exclusive cans are made
for big customers who do not
want to use the same can shape
as everyone else such as Fauchon of
France, Harrods and Fortnum & Mason.”
Some customers order an exclusive can design
for a special one off event or promotion.
“We had a 200,000 unit Teddy Bear can shape exclu-
sive design order from a mail order company client. They
used the can to fill with sweets as a free gift offer,” Lam
explains.
For regular can shapes, Jef requires a minimum order
of 5,000 pieces per printed design. The minimum order for
exclusive can designs is 5,000 pieces per item with the cus-
tomer paying for the cost of the new mould.
“For the Christmas season customers start to order in
May. In fact, some of our customers have started working
on Christmas 2013 items already,” Lam says. “For exclusive
designs it can take six months to prepare the design and
then make the mould.
“Nowadays customers ask for more than just round or
square tins, they ask for more different designs – different
shapes and special shapes. Also, for other materials to
be used with tin cans like plastic to make the can more
elegant or attractive.”
Transparent plastic panels are requested by some cus-
tomers to create a window in the can body allowing the
can’s contents to be seen when displayed for retail sale.
Other non-tinplate parts can include a zipper used to close
the lid on pencil case cans.
Metal decoratingCan body panels are printed by an associate company of
Jef Can at another factory in Guangdong.
“Customers are asking for more colours in their designs.
In the past we did four-colour processing but now there
are more colours to make the tins look brighter and more
beautiful,” Lam says. “This is the trend in all markets and
started a few years ago.”
Jef Can uses tinplate from local suppliers while some
tinplate is imported from South Korea and Japan. Tinplate
from 0.2mm to 0.35mm is used to make decorative cans
with thicker tinplate being used to make larger size cans.
“Our factory makes only tinplate decorative cans. We
finish our cans with a lacquer coating both inside and out-
side,” Lam says. “Competition comes from folding paper
cartons as paper is cheaper than tinplate.
“When they use a decorative tin can as packaging it
is difficult to change to a paper carton as it makes their
product look cheap. However, when a
customer uses a paper carton
and thinks about using a
decorative can, it may
be hard for them to
decide as a deco-
rative can is about
four times more
expensive to use
than a paper box.
But tin boxes are col-
lectible.” ❑ Jef Can’s general manager Betty Lam with a variety of

Caps & closures
The Massilly Group, set up in 1911, specialises in the
manufacture of metal packaging (sealing caps, tin
food cans, aerosols, decorated cans) as well as asso-
ciated services such as capping systems, technical and
chemical analysis and industry-related training.
It is striking that during my discussion with Stéphane
Lequin, division managing director closures, the phrase
‘family company’ is immediately mentioned.
“We are a family company in which the Bindschedler
family members are the only stakeholders and we want to
remain that way,” says Lequin. “This aim is one of our core
values. Our financial expectations are lower than those
of companies listed on the stock exchange because we
have a long-term perspective. Our profits are reinvested in
the group and that makes us strong. Another aim is that we
want to be present in all major fields of metal packaging,
except beverage cans. Together with our goal to be one
of the global leaders in metal packaging, these aspirations
make us a diversified company, which spreads its risks over
various markets.”
The roots of the company go back as far as
1911. In that year Robert Bindschedler start-
ed to recuperate tin from tinplate waste
in an old mill in the Massilly commune
(south of Burgundy, France). After
the First World War he started to
use tinplate for the production
of household appliances.
At the start of the 1960s, Robert Bindschedler iinitiated
the production of so called Eurocaps (toothed tinplate
closures, seamed on glass jars with a special finish) and
screw caps.
In 1962, the son of the founder, Pierre Bindschedler, made
an important step in Massilly’s closure history. He signed a
license agreement with US-based Anchor Hocking Group
for the manufacture of twist-type closures and sealing
machines. This was the start of rapid development as a
major twist-closure supplier.
In the 1970s, Massilly started to develop its can making
operations. The company made a lot of acquisitions or
built ‘greenfield’ plants in several countries like the UK,
Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Ghana, South Africa,
Peru and more recently in Denmark and Russia.
Adds Lequin: “In April 2012 we took over the Russian
company Linar, a producer of aerosol cans. I can now
announce that we have signed an agreement with the
Russian subsidiary of the French glass jar producer Verallia.
They also had a twist-type closure production. The agree-
ment confirms that Massilly will produce and sell metal
closures from its Linar plant in the Stavropol region. Another
bit of news I can share with you is that we have started a
joint venture in India where we have the majority share.
A number of international customers have products like
gherkins or pickles packed in India and they want a bet-
ter quality closure than what is currently available in India.
That is why we have brought our know-how to the party.”
Today Massilly operates 14 plants in various parts of the
world. Its turnover was €275 million in 2011.
A knowledge of closuresMassilly has many decades of closure production expe-
rience. Starting in the 1960s with the simple, cheap
but reliable Eurocaps (comparable with the Omnia
caps from the UK and the Pano caps from Germany),
production of the Euro-Twist closures in 1962, under
licence from Anchor Hocking, was a big step forward.
Big brand owners like Heinz, Kraft, Bonduelle and others
welcomed the introduction of closures that provided
much more convenience to consumers. They could be
opened without any tool, just by turning the cap a quarter
of a turn. The experience of Anchor Hocking was important
for Massilly, in particular in the cap construction and the
compound formulations.

“1975 saw the end of our technical agreement with
Anchor Hocking, so we were on our own as far as Euro-
Twist production was concerned,” explains Lequin. “From
then on we adapted the technology to make it our own.
We worked continuously on production improvements
throughout the process. We gradually integrated several
production steps into some basic machines. We do not
construct our own production equipment, but buy it from
the best possible suppliers and develop it further accord-
ing to our own ideas. We have high-speed production
lines with an output of up to 100,000 closures per hour. An
important strength we have is that we produce our own
compounds and formulations. We have two production
sites for compounds and can therefore react very quickly
to any changes in food legislation.”
In 2010 the company created a special closure division
to maintain its global approach and strong commitment to
the market. “It became necessary to have one face for inter-
national customers,” notes Lequin. “At the same time we
wanted to remain fast and flexible so a small team of man-
agers specialises in closures only. When possible we try and
share resources between the can division and the closure
division.”
Massilly’s market strategy Massilly is aiming to remain a multi-product company.
The shares of the various product groups in 2011 were as
follows: Food cans 50 per cent, closures 40 per cent, gen-
eral line cans (including some syrup cans and the sale of
closing equipment) 10 per cent.
“For several years the international ranking in the closure
market has been Silgan at number one, Crown second
while us and Tecnocap continue to fight for the third and
fourth positions,” remarked Lequin. “The twist-type closure
market in Western Europe and North America is mature.
We believe that these markets will remain big markets,
though in the last decade there has been a switch in the
juice market from glass to PET bottles with plastic closures.
However, the demands for package safety, tightness etc
for many food products are so high that only glass jars and
metal closures can meet them. Also, consumers perceive
glass as a high-quality packaging material, stable, safe,
inert and perfectly recyclable. What we have seen at the
same time is a wave of consolidation in the number of cap
producers.”
From around 1990 to 2005 many new players came
on the market, who bought a Haar or Cantec line and
started production, only to find that making closures at a
consistently high quality level is not that easy. A number
of these companies quit cap production or looked for a
stronger partner.
“Our strategy is to go where there is great potential
for growth. Our choice of countries and regions like
Russia, India, Africa and South America, all areas with
a large agricultural potential, reflects that strategy. We
have avoided China so far because of overcapacity and
competition there.”
The intensive Massilly research and development work
for the closure division focuses on improvements in tinplate
quality, new lacquering varieties, compound properties,
printing and all aspects of the closure production itself.
Offering more services to customers has also become
important at Massilly.
Continuous improvements“At the request of many customers we are offering a wide
range of services. We have even founded a new sepa-
rate sister company to organise it, named MassiServices,”
notes Lequin. “This company is acting as the interface
for customers when it comes to capping equipment and
auxiliary control and testing equipment like dud-detectors.
But we also extend our services to the filling and process-
ing activities at the customer’s plant. This can include heat
treatment, conveying, palletising etc. We even have our

subsidised. An important feature of our equipment devel-
opment is aimed at making the operation of machines
easier as many skilled operators are leaving the industry
and it is difficult to replace that experience.”
In the last few years the company has developed its
own BPA-free and PVC-free Euro-Twist closures.
“Regarding PVC-free closures, they are now ready and
if required we can supply them within a short time. As it
has a big impact on the production process, closures will
become more expensive and in the end consumers will be
confronted with a price increase. Again, if necessary we
are ready for such a transition but we are not convinced at
the moment. It may come in 10 or 15 years time, but not in
five years. Within emerging markets there are many other
important themes. Time will tell,” concludes Lequin. ❑

Sustainability
Rigid metal packaging is an integral part of
sustainable living. It is produced in a responsible
and efficient manner and is an excellent way of
reducing product waste, as the absolute barrier properties
of metal packaging protect the valuable contents for the
longest possible time.
Empac acts as a unified voice for the rigid metal
packaging industry throughout Europe. We present views
of the industry, make recommendations and voice opin-
ions on the social (people), environmental (planet) and
economic (performance) matters affecting us.
What is sustainability? For us, sustainability is about manag-
ing resources and materials responsibly
while supporting this with a continuous
stream of innovative products and
processes.
Our aim is to ensure that metal
continues to be a widely used
packaging material benefiting
people, respecting the planet
and maximising performance.
Hermetically sealed, metal pack-
aging contributes to keeping food
safe and reduces waste by capturing
and preserving crops at the moment of
harvest.
The can acts as a veritable warehouse for an extended
period of time, keeping goodness and nutrients in and
impurities out. Metal packaging also ensures potential-
ly dangerous goods are moved and stored safely and
efficiently.
Planet and performanceMetal is a permanent material, infinitely 100 per cent
recyclable and a leader in recycling resulting in a signifi-
cant reduction of environmental impacts.
Once designed, tried and tested throughout the supply
chain, metal packaging provides best in class value with a
proven track record in doing more with less across a wide
range of applications. Responsible resource management
enables us to continue achieving durable improvements
and efficiency gains. In order to better represent the ben-
efits of recycling Empac has developed an interactive
scorecard which measures key aspects of environmental
impact, including an average European carbon footprint.
This informs stakeholders in a consistent manner of the
strengths of metal packaging, including the undeniable
benefits of reduced emissions and energy consumption
through recycling.
The benefitsMetal packaging enhances product safety by being both
tamper proof as well as virtually unbreakable.
Its barrier properties, which keep the goodness in and
impurities out ensure that the content safely reaches
the consumer, free from contaminants. Combined with
a best in class shelf life, our industry’s product is an ideal
packaging material for many markets. The global metal
packaging industry, worth in excess of €20 billion, is a key
player in the challenge to feed a growing world popula-
tion.
We rigorously adhere to quality compliance schemes
for our European employees. Similarly, our industry experts,
through the different technical commissions, ensure that
our industry is at the forefront in supplying safe, lightweight
and modern packaging.
Research and developmentCan manufacturing today is a highly advanced tech-
nology driven industry, demanding a skilled workforce,
supported by research and development teams
and centres of excellence for printing and
shaping. Using resources efficiently, avoiding spoilage,
improving the recovery of materials, in short, responsible

resource management, has always been key to
the success of the metal packaging industry. Once
the metal is extracted and refined from the earth’s
crust the application may vary, but the permanent
characteristics of the material remain forever and
allow for infinite use in new products and applica-
tions. Through its resource efficiency across the
entire supply chain, the metal packaging sector
has successfully decoupled market growth from
resource use and daily efforts ensure that this con-
tinues to be the case.
Metal packaging benefits greatly from its inimita-
ble material-to-material recycling loop. The infinite
recycling capability and actual recycling perform-
ance gives metal packaging a modest environ-
mental footprint when measured as part of a full
product life-cycle, reducing product waste and
therefore the environmental impact of products.
Metal is one of the most recycled packaging
materials in Europe with a European aver-
age recycling rate of about 70 per
cent. In the last 10 years the recy-
cling rate has improved by
almost 50 per cent, benefit-
ing from a series of indus-
try led initiatives across
Europe.
Belgium, Germany,
and the Netherlands
recycle in excess of 87
per cent of steel packag-
ing, illustrating their lead-
ership position. Hungary,
Austria, Switzerland and Spain
follow closely behind recycling
over 75 per cent. The trend towards
increased recycling for steel packag-
ing has been confirmed in Central and Eastern
Europe where Slovenia, Romania, Slovakia and
Bulgaria are all boosting their recycling perform-
ances.
Investing in the futureMetal is simple to recycle and the infrastructure is
already in place and functioning well across much
of Europe. There are economic incentives, ready
markets and easy collection options.
Major investments have been made by the
industry into recycling infrastructures, which is why
Europe improves its recycling rates every year.
Additionally, with a competitive and well devel-
oped industry for metal scrap, the economic driv-
ers for further increasing recycling are supported
by market forces. Metal packaging is 100 per cent
recyclable, infinitely, without loss of its inherent
properties and therefore a permanent material.
In other words, metal packaging can be simply
recovered, re-melted and turned into a variety of
applications again and again. More than 80 per
cent of steel is recycled worldwide – a leadership
position.
The benefits of recyclingRecycling metal saves significant amounts of
resources and energy, benefiting the planet at
every step.
• Each item of recycled steel packaging saves
one and a half times its weight of CO2. So the
more steel is recycled, the more CO2 emissions are
reduced.
• Recycling one tonne of metal scrap can save up
to 75 per cent (steel) and up to 95 per cent (alu-
minium) of the energy required when making steel
from iron ore or primary aluminium from bauxite.
The can you recycle today could become a
bicycle or a bridge tomorrow and a can again in
the future. The possibilities are endless!
Competitive and innovativeThe metal packaging
industry in Europe makes in
excess of 70 billion units
annually and continues
to retain a solid share in
the highly competitive
packaging industry.
Metal packaging
offers real value and
excels throughout the
supply chain with highly
efficient logistics and
outstanding f i l l -
ing speeds. Due to the
strength of metal pack-
aging, it can also be stacked
over eight metres high, reducing
the warehouse footprint and saving space.
This is all achieved with almost no secondary
packaging.
Efficiency carries into the home saving the
consumer both time and money. Canned
food is portioned, needs no refrigeration and
can be eaten straight from the can or reheated
quickly before serving because it has already been
cooked.
Advanced photo-quality metal decoration
processes, including offset printing, pre-distortion
printing, flexo printing and thermochromic inks pro-
vide brands with opportunities for differentiation.

Irecently grabbed a copy of The Economist
magazine on my way back to India from
London. Just from glancing through some of
the articles I saw the following headlines: Europe
– Population and recession; Britain – The Troubled
Coalition; Libya’s election; Egypt’s president;
Trouble in Kuwait; Unrest in Sudan; and United
States – Stockton’s bankruptcy.
The world has changed in the last few years and
reading these articles got me thinking about what
the future has in store.
A couple of years ago one of the world’s lead-
ing economists published a report on where the
world would see real growth. This report was com-
piled after considering several macro and micro
economic factors such as population growth,
demographics of a country, middle class popula-
tion, GDP per capita, Whole sale Price Index (WPI),
Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) etc.
However, the report that changed the focus of
most of the global multinational organisations and
global business leaders was called the BRIC report.
This suggested that the next growth markets of the
world would be Brazil, Russia, India and China. The
report stated that the economic potential of the
BRIC countries is such that they could become
among the four most dominant economies by
2050. The thesis was proposed by Jim O’Neill, glo-
bal economist at Goldman Sachs.
Growth trendsThe metal packaging industry followed this
path and witnessed robust growth in Brazil,
Russia and China. However, one fact still
puzzles everyone in the can industry and
that’s the growth of the Indian can market.
Through this article, I am going to decode
the story behind the Indian market.
The economic indicators for India are just
right. 1.21 billion population and 377 million
of urban population, which is expected to
grow rapidly to 1.52 billion and 590 million
by 2031. The expectation is that by 2031
India has the potential to become the third
largest economy in the world after the US and
China. The country has a high English speaking
population, low labour costs, no import/export
barriers, it has a favourable FDI (Foreign Direct
Investment) policy and a stable political system.
In fact a cost comparison carried out by UBS
showed that India has the lowest cost of manufac-
turing in the world – even lower than China.
Looking at the factors below I remain puzzled as
to why the developed nations only think of China
when they look for low cost sourcing. Today Indian

can makers are using the world’s best technologies
and practices to make cans and components
with the same equipment, which can makers
from developed markets would use. I think that
Indian can makers have done a bad job in mar-
keting themselves on how they can deliver high
quality and economical solutions and actively
become long term strategic partners to can mak-
ers around the world. With Chinese costs going up
and the highly regulated Chinese currency bubble
about to burst, I see India as an export hub for the
world. Recently, Hindustan Tin Works (HTW) bagged
an export order from a company in China and is
regularly shipping can ends to China for one of
its global multinational customers. This re-empha-
sises and supports the claim that if India can sell
in China, it can be more competitive and provide
consistent quality solutions to the world.
DynamismThe Indian can market has shown a fair amount of
dynamism in recent years.
The two-piece can market has seen fantastic
growth. The first two-piece can plant in India was
started by HTW in 2005 in Mumbai. This was later
hived off to a joint venture company called Rexam
HTW Beverage Can (India) to formulate a joint
venture with Rexam UK. Following the move, both
Toyo Seikan and Ball Packaging announced plans
to install two-piece can plants in the country, but
these plans were eventually shelved. However, the
market did see the entry of CanPack of Poland.
In 2005, the two-piece can market stood at only
50 million cans but this is expected to be close to
one billion cans in 2012. Both Rexam and CanPack
have announced aggressive expansion plans and
want to grab a large share of the two-piece mar-
ket, which is expected to grow between 15 to 20
per cent year-on-year. The market, which was a
30/70 per cent split between steel and aluminium
cans, is expected to move to 100 per cent alumini-
um. This would be a big loss to the steel industry. It’s
a shame that the steel producers were not able to
support this growth.
The three-piece can market is growing at
a humble rate of around four to five per cent
annually and employs about 100,000 people. It is
very fragmented with few players in the sector.
Canned foodThe food can segment does have a few organ-
ised players who follow world class manufacturing
standards and have imported the best can making
technologies from around the world. For example,
HTW has several Soudronic lines, Crabtree printing
with UV cure etc. HTW has a long relationship with
Nestlé India which goes back over two decades.
Even with the presence of medium sized can mak-
ers who can provide world class solutions in the

food can segment, the food can market in India is
limited and has not grown due to the country’s cul-
ture. Culturally, Indians still prefer to cook so called
“fresh foods” and believe that canned food is not
nutritious or tasty. Most of the canned food made
in India is exported to other countries and not
domestically consumed. Primary export markets
include the US, Middle East, UK and Europe. Being
an export dependent segment, the food can sec-
tor has suffered from the European crisis and the
recent disturbances in the Middle East. Initiatives
like Canilicious, which was carried out by HTW,
aim to make consumers taste canned food and
spread the awareness of nutritious canned food
in India. This could help push the segment forward
and make it more dependent of the domestic
market. A lot more needs to be done in India to
change the mindset of consumers.
The futureRecently, environmental concerns have become
a factor which the government has started to look
into. Any legislative changes that drive brand own-
ers to use environmentally friendly packaging will
help grow the three-piece can industry because
steel cans are 100 per cent recyclable. HTW runs
an annual campaign called Canvironment Week,
which promotes the sustainability of cans and is
now celebrated across 11 countries from five con-
tinents. Such initiatives are necessary to drive the
can industry in India forward.
With the growth in middle class population,
the changing lifestyles and choices of the Indian
consumer, and the government’s vision to make
India the food factory of the world, it is important
to try and position India as the export hub for the
metal packaging industry. Often referred to as the
elephant economy of the world, India has huge
potential which is still to be tapped.
The introduction of new technologies and value
added solutions that differentiate brands in the
eyes of the consumer, coupled with the above
factors, will be key to putting wings on the Indian
elephant. ❑

Root beer in aluminium bottlesUS craft brewer Oskar Blues Brewery has launched its home-brewed root beer in Alumi-Tek bottles from Ball.
The brewer, which is based in Lyons, Colorado, has also paid tribute to Brian Stiff who was part of the local bike scene and recently passed away.
When Lyons locals looked for ways to help his widow, it seemed natural for Dale Katechis, the brewery owner, to name Oskar Blues’ root beer B.Stiff & Sons as a tribute to their friend.
“With every sale, a portion
of the proceeds of B.Stiff & Sons Old Fashioned Root Beer goes to Brian’s family,” says Chad Melis, marketing director of Oskar Blues Brewery. “After years of serving our popular, home-brewed root beer from our restaurants, we decided to share it with friends and fam-ily in a portable, recyclable package suitable for outdoor activities – Ball’s 16oz Alumi-Tek bottles.”
Ball’s resealable bottle lets consumers enjoy B. Stiff & Sons root beer on the move wherever they go. The 100%
Heinz is bringing innovation to the beans category with the launch of its new Five Beanz product in the UK.
The new 415g can contains five different beans – haricot, kidney, pinto, cannellini and borlotti – in the classic Heinz Beanz tomato sauce.
The can deviates from the turquoise coloured label syn-onymous with Heinz Beanz, with a black label to create stand out on shelf.
Featuring visuals of each of the beans in the recipe, the packaging clearly explains the concept to consumers and pro-vides information around the product’s ‘natural goodness’ on the back of the packs.
Katie Bleach, marketing con-troller, said: “We wanted to launch an innovative product that caters to consumers’ varied tastes, but still reassures them that they can expect the same whole-some and great tasting goodness of Heinz Beanz which they have come to know and love.”

US-based HeatGenie is on the verge of bringing its self-heating cans to the consumer market.
The company, which is based in Texas, has received a letter of intent from a European food and beverage brand to license the HeatGenie self-heating technol-ogy and purchase up to five million self-heating packages.
In a newsletter the company said: “The letter of intent signi-fies the beginning of an impor-tant phase of revenue growth for us. While HeatGenie technol-ogy is in active evaluation by a number of multi-national food and beverage companies, the
best way for us to get to early market experience is to launch with a more nimble, smaller brand. Working with a dynamic, innovative brand in Europe is also a good way to launch this new technology and will build the interest and confidence of the larger brands. We continue to invite participation of addi-tional regional brands wanting to offer the differentiation and convenience of self-heating.”
HeatGenie has a develop-ment agreement with can maker Crown Holdings. Both companies have been devel-oping the self-heating package
for a little over a year. Full-scale production is expected in 2013.
The newsletter continued: “To date, HeatGenie has sold small quantities of heated packages to the US Army for evaluation and built the heaters in their Austin laboratory. An order of up to five million units will com-pel a large scale manufacturer to make the necessary capi-tal investments. With this letter of intent, HeatGenie can now finalise negotiations with its large scale manufacturing and packaging partners to bring this technology to the consumer packaged goods industry.”

Massimo Ambrosini, vice president of PepsiCo Beverages Italia, said: “PepsiCo is always keen on looking out for new market-ing solutions and taking on challenges to bring innova-tion onto the market. We believe in the potential of the Fusion bot-tle for out-of-home consumption and have chosen our Pepsi Twist
drink for this launch as it is the most innovative drink
from our range of prod-ucts.”
Monica Mantovani, sales manager at Rexam Beverage Can Italia, added: “It has been great working with the team at PepsiCo to develop the Fusion bot-tles for Pepsi Twist, not only do the bottles look fantastic, but they real-
ly do enhance the great drink inside.”
Pepsi Twist in Fusion bottles was launched in early Spring 2012.

World News
Profits hit as HTW suffers poor financial yearThe managing director of India’s leading can maker Hindustan Tin Works is looking forward to a stronger year after it report-ed a drop in net profit of almost 50% for the year ended 31 March, 2012.
The current market situation such as high rates of interest, volatility of commodity prices, adverse Rupee Dollar parity and high inflation has had a drastic impact on domestic sales. This coupled with the European crisis and disturbances in the Middle East has had an adverse impact on export sales resulting in a
decrease in net sales of 16.3% compared to the previous year.
A rise in prices of raw material such as tinplate, inks, lacquers etc has hit the company’s profit. The figures show that profit after tax is at 5.66 crore compared to 11.28 crore in the corresponding previous year thereby resulting in a 49.8% decrease.
Sanjay Bhatia, managing director, Hindustan Tin Works, said: “The current figures result-ing in a decline in sales and net profit is a temporary phase which the company is passing through and we are looking forward
to a better 2012/13. We have added new innovative products and have confirmed orders from new customers in India and new geographies which will help the company’s sales. We believe our fundamentals are strong and this belief was reinstated by ICRA continuing our A+ credit rating. We have also appealed to the Finance Minister to reconsider the recent increase in custom duty which was raised from five to 7.5% in his recent announced union budget. I thank all my stakehold-ers for their constant support and confidence in the company.”

It’s rare these days for one’s career to remain on one
path or in one industry. Yet I have done just that. At 19, I
became part of this small and growing, family-like indus-
try we know as the can industry. I got my start at Hyde Park
Electronics, which is now part of Schneider Electric, as their
very first employee. It is hard for me to believe, even now,
that 46 years have passed. At that time, Hyde Park special-
ised in designing and manufacturing special sensors and
controls for the food and beverage container industries.
Over the course of 30 years with Hyde Park, I climbed the
rankings, starting out as a technician, then moving to field
service, and then onto sales. Finally, I ended up as the vice
president of sales and marketing, before breaking away
from Hyde Park Electronics and starting my own company,
Prime Controls. When you do what you know best and
remain true to that, success is bound to follow.
A celebrationPrime Controls is celebrating its 20th year this September.
Originally, I started Prime Controls because I wanted to
advance the technology of double metal sheet detection
with state-of-the-art designs. Double metal sheet detection
is crucial to the quality control process of can and end
making. The product needed to evolve as technology

I can say with certainty that nearlyall of our products today originated as
an idea from one of our customers’‘
Larry Tucker, president, Prime Controls
was evolving. It wasn’t long before our small company
of three – me, an engineer and a production assistant –
accomplished that goal. From there on out, our humble
group took an approach that we stand by even today. We
listen to our customers. I can say with certainty that nearly
all of our products today originated as an idea from one of
them. And for that, we are thankful.
I have seen many things throughout the years within this
industry and I have learned to roll with the punches, as
many of us do. I can remember one of my first projects,
where I spent my days replacing electronic tubes in pres-
sure amplifiers used on Borden Testers. When the technol-
ogy switched to the use of more reliable transistors in the
1960s, I feared for my job. But, it was improvements like
these within the industry that led to better products, and
naturally, more work.
New marketsWe’ve spent many years developing new products, as
well as fine-tuning our core products. We have become
experts in the field of double metal sheet detection, dou-
ble end and missing tab detection, as well as leak detec-
tion. Today, we are realising the fruits of our labour, as we
shift more toward sales and marketing, and international
expansion. We are beginning to explore unchartered terri-
tory with new markets and new products, more employees
and new facilities. We are excited about the future. Over
the years and within this industry in which I have come to
call home, there is one thing that has always remained
true. If you listen to the customer and remain true to your
capabilities, you can accomplish almost anything. ❑
