My Personal Welcome

I am glad you are here. We’re going to go together into the past. I think if you really want to understand what’s going on around you, youMUST know how things came to be, or else you’ll always be lost. Yes, there will be hard work along the way, but you will be a betterstudent when you are done.

And remember: I am not the one responsible for your grade --YOU are.  I help present the material and try to get your brain to engage. But

then, I only compare you to my expectations and the performance of your colleagues past and present.  If you do the work when I ask you you to

do it, how I ask you to do it, and at the level I expect you to do it, you will be A-OK in here.

What's Exciting About This Course

This course brings us back to the beginnings of the twentieth century and takes us to the present day (more or less). We will look at asmany things as possible, both fun and not-so-fun. For history is about building an understanding of our country, our neighbors, andourselves, one that allows us to think independently from as broad a base as possible.

Prerequisites and/or Co-Requisites

Students enrolled in HIST 1302 must be placed into college level reading and writing.

Eagle Online Canvas Learning Management System

This section of HIST 1302 will use Eagle Online Canvas (https://eagleonline.hccs.edu) to supplement in-class assignments, exams, andactivities. Each student must maintain Internet access throughout this course. Additionally, students are expected to maintain a state oftechnical compliance, including (but not limited to): up-to-date software as required by the instructor, a stable Internet connection, and useof an up-to-date browser when using Eagle Online. The Professor is not required to give consideration for lost/missing/unacceptable workstemming from technical non-compliance and/or end-user technical issues. Failure to maintain Internet access shall not constitute a validexcuse for missed work. Any student who cannot keep up with the coursework owing to a lack of computer or Internet must drop thecourse.

Some assignments may require the use of the free Respondus Lockdown browser and possibly a webcam. Instructions will be provided asto how to get it. Note that Lockdown is not compatibile with Chromebooks, and that HCC Online specifies to students that they must havecompatible computers/devices (and not simply tablets) to take Online classes. Students without access to Lockdown at home may need tomake alternative arrangements, e.g. visiting a HCC Library, borrowing/obtaining another device, etc. Note that a Lockdown app for phonesdoes exist and be of some usefulness; however, it is not recommended that major exams be taken using a phone.

Instructional Materials Required Textbook Information

OpenStaxS. History (click here (https://openstax.org/details/books/us-history) ) –FREEDavid Oshinsky, Polio: An American Story. ISBN-13: 978-0195307146Other required readings will be available for students online and free of charge

Recorded Lectures: "Behold, the Voice Of Mojo!"

Recorded lectures for all chapters covered in this course will be available, in addition to the PowerPoint notes that come with each module.Use of the recorded lectures is recommended, particularly for Online students, as there is a lot of information and perspective in them thatis not in the notes or in the main course textbook. Face-to-face students may also benefit by using them for review.

Recorded lectures and commentaries do not take the place of reading. My choice to leave a given topic for you to master on you own doesNOT relieve you of your obligation to know the material for the exam. For example, I have been known to say, “Your textbook does adecent job of discussing this, so we can skip over this for now.” Another favorite instructor saying is, “I don’t like your book’s treatment ofthis subject, let me give you a different version.”

Tutoring

HCC provides free, confidential, and convenient academic support, including writing critiques, to HCC students in an online environmentand on campus. Tutoring is provided by HCC personnel in order to ensure that it is contextual and appropriate. Visit the HCC TutoringServices website for services provided.

Instructor and Student Responsibilities

https://eagleonline.hccs.edu/courses/114775/assignments/syllabus 7/26

As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to:

Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student grades are to be derivedFacilitate an effective learning environment through learner-centered instructional techniquesProvide a description of any special projects or assignmentsInform students of policies such as attendance, withdrawal, tardiness, and make upProvide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any special projects or assignmentsArrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required

As a student, it is your responsibility to:

Attend class in person and/or onlineParticipate actively by reviewing course material, interacting with classmates, and responding promptly in your communication with meRead and comprehend the textbookComplete the required assignments and examsAsk for help when there is a question or problemKeep copies of all paperwork, including this syllabus, handouts, and all assignmentsBe aware of and comply with academic honesty policies in the HCC Student Handbook

Assignments, Exams, and ActivitiesWeekly Quizzes: "Blowing off Quizzes is hazardous to your course grade."

Each week there will be at least one review quiz over the material that has been covered. You must use Lockdown Browser to take thesequizzes. Each quiz is timed with a short duration to discourage dishonest behavior. Correct answers will display a few days after the cut-offdate. Each quiz may be taken twice, and the higher of the two scores will be automatically kept. Missed quizzes CANNOT be made up. Afew low scores may be dropped at the end of the semester, but never the first three.

Weekly Essays: "Blowing off the discussions is hazardous to your course grade."

In many weeks, there will be a required online essay. You will be required to write an answer to a question given by your instructor. These, too, cannot be made up if missed. You will need to complete the How To Do The Writing Module to gain access to these.

1/24/2020 Syllabus for 6202-HIST1302 Online-US History II-RT-16306

https://eagleonline.hccs.edu/courses/114775/assignments/syllabus 8/26

I will be keeping your best four scores out of seven from this category; however, this does NOT mean you should blow off the first fewweeks of writing. If you do that, you will set yourself up for failure in multiple ways:

1. You will have no idea how good or bad your writing actually is until very late in the game.2. You will not have any room for mistakes or misses, because even one missed assignment at that point will cost you big-time in terms of

your average.3. You will be back-loading yourself with a lot of work late in the semester (weekly essays plus the Big Essay work).

On the other hand, if you get the early Weekly Essays done, and are happy with your results, you will then have the luxury of being able toskip some of the later ones.

Exams: "There is no such thing as 'having to miss an exam.' "

Each exam will cover material from lectures, discussions, and assigned readings. There will be three exams: two "Midterms" and a FinalExam. All exams will be taken using the Lockdown Browser and may require a webcam. The Final Exam may be slightly longer to includequestions taken from previous exams in other words, the Final Exam is semi -cumulative. Exams will be timed. All exams will be takenonline.

All exams must be taken at the HCC Proctoring Center as directed by the instructor, or with a webcam using Respondus Lockdown. Anylate exam arrangements are SOLELY at the discretion of the Professor, and may incur a substantial penalty, such as a cap on themaximum score. Missing the First Midterm will result in being dropped from the course with a grade of W. Missing the Final Exam shallconstitute "not completing the course" and may result in a final course grade of FX.

Incompletes are only allowed in documentable emergencies AND with prior approval; all other grades will be recorded as FX. Theinstructor is under zero obligation to consider the appeals of students not taking the Final Exam for non -emergency reasons and/or withoutprior notification, and any such consideration will be solely at his discretion.

Big Essay: "Blowing the Big Essay and related work off can be VERY hazardous to your course grade."

There will be a mandatory Big Essay, based on your assigned monographs and additional research. This will included a graded thesisstatement, a draft with annotated bibliography, and a final version. Students must complete the How To Do The Writing Module before theycan access the Big Essay. All work must be original to the student and the course. Students will submit essays via Canvas before the listeddeadlines (cf. Late Work policy). Written work should be proofread prior to upload, as the instructor may also count off for mechanical

issues such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting.

All written work will be run through automatically by Eagle Online through Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism, unauthorized collaborationand poor citations. COPYING YOUR WORK OFF THE INTERNET AND/OR WITHOUT PROPER CITATIONS MAY RESULT INAUTOMATIC COURSE FAILURE AND LOCK OUT FROM THE SYSTEM!

Bonus Work

Any and all bonus work is solely at the Instructor’s discretion. Bonus work cannot move a grade from a C to a B, or a B to an A. Themaximum amount of bonus points that can be earned is seven (7) points to the final course grade.

Syllabus Modifications

The instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus at any time during the semester and will promptly notify students in writing, typicallyby e-mail, of any such changes.

Instructor’s Practices and Procedures

Missed Assignments and Late Work

There is no such thing as “late work” for minor grades such as weekly quizzes, weekly discussions, or weekly essays, as applicable. If thedeadline is missed, that work is gone, and a zero will be recorded, no exceptions.

Late exams are penalized under a progressive max-cap system:

Up to one day late: grade capped at 89Up to three days late: grade capped at 75Up to seven days late: grade capped at 65After seven days: zero recorded for the examStudents who fail to take the Midterm exam will be dropped from the course with a grade of W.

Late work related to the Big Essay will be penalized at the rate of .5% per hour, but no such grade will be scored below a 30 simply byvirtue of being late. However, after one week no late major essays will be accepted.

Academic Dishonesty, Plagiarism, Cheating

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited by HCCS policy. Plagiarism is the use of the ideas or wordsof another person (either in whole or in part) without crediting the source. Plagiarism amounts to the theft of another person’s work and itsappropriation as one’s own. Students are also prohibiting from self-plagiarism or turning in work for one class in another class. Cheatinginvolves fraud and deception for the purpose of violating legitimate testing rules. Cheating includes but is not limited to: copying fromanother student’s test paper, using materials not authorized by the instructor during an exam; collaborating with another student during anexam; knowingly using, buying, selling, etc. whole or part of an un-administered test. Any questions about academic dishonesty should bereferred to the Student Conduct section of the College System catalogue. Students caught violating standards of academic honesty will begiven an F for the assignment and may be given an F for the course.

By the way: if you get caught and attempt to drop the course to avoid a record, it will not work, plus you will automatically fail the course (Ican and will go back after the end of the term and change your W to a F).

Attendance Procedures for Online Sections

Either you are participating in the course, or you are not. .Actually participating in class is critical for your success, and for that reason notlogging in and getting work done is frowned upon. Poor work habits have the following consequences:

Failure to log in to Canvas and do assignments for a two-week period may be interpreted as being absent, even if you are regularlylogging in. Typically you will receive a warning about your lack of work; continued failure to work may cause you to be summarilydropped.Failure to take the First Midterm exam, as specified earlier, is cause for being dropped from the course.

If you stop attending classes or doing work after the “Last day to withdraw”, the following consequences will apply:

Academic consequence – grade of “FX” (same impact on your GPA as an “F”)

Any student who fails to take the Final Exam will be considered as “stopped attending,” and so earn a grade of FX.Any student who goes MIA after the date of last drop will not be allowed to take the Final Exam, and so earn a grade of FX.

https://eagleonline.hccs.edu/courses/114775/assignments/syllabus 12/26

Financial consequence – required to repay all or a portion of your financial aidIMPORTANT -future financial aid eligibility may be affected no matter when you withdraw.

Student Conduct Expectations

This is a collegiate environment, with collegiate expectations in terms of in- class behavior and out -of- class obligations. If you cannot meetthose expectations, you may wish to reconsider your enrollment. While I am both pleased and grateful that you have chosen to spend yourhard -earned money on tuition for my class, it is still my class, and you are my student. Please keep that in mind when dealing with me.

Collegiate expectations include, but are not limited to:

Logging in to Canvas on a regular basis (MORE than once a week)Completing your work in a timely mannerBeing mindful of your environment (like court, or church, it’s not good to do or say certain things in certain ways)Getting results instead of giving excusesAccepting criticism in a constructive manner

The Final Exam covers all materials since the Second Midterm, plus a few questions taken from earlier exams. It will require the full two hours to take this exam; if you are taking this at HCC, take note of the scheduled hours and plan onarriving early. There is no such thing as a late Final Exam. If you miss taking the Final Exam, you will likely be seeing a FX for non-completion as your posted grade, and it will remain so until such time as I make a decision as to IF you will be allowed tomake up the Final Exam, and what penalties may or may not apply.Incompletes for the class are only available with prior approval from both myself and my chair.
