Despite the challenges of 2020, our St. Bede family is grateful. We are proud to share some of the year’s highlights.

As you will read in this issue, St. Bede has much to be thankful for. One highlight being that classes were held in-person in the fall and continue for this semester. I am

inspired by the faith of our Bruins who have taught us much about

resilience, goodness, kindness, and joy during these times. St. Bede is truly a reason to celebrate, and because of you we are counting our blessings.

In times of trouble, we lean on those closest to us. We are blessed to have so many who believe in us and invest their charitable gifts in St. Bede. I am especially moved by the number of alumni and friends reaching out to inquire and express concern for our students, faculty and monks. Your notes, emails, and phone calls have touched our hearts and attest to the unique family St. Bede is; one of compassion and one we are eternally grateful for.

You continue to make a true and lasting difference in the lives of our students. I am honored to include in this edition of The Bedan Record our July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 Annual Report. In this report we highlight the impact of your dedication and generosity. Everyone listed on these pages share in the continued success that began over 130 years ago and we are thankful for what we have accomplished together with one purpose in mind – our students.

Every gift is meaningful and makes an impact at St. Bede, as well as reflecting the strength of our school community, past and present. It is wonderful to see the continued growth of the St. Bede Fund, and thanks to the deep generosity of our St. Bede family, we completed the fiscal year just over the prior year, with gifts totaling $441,029 and the number of gifts increasing by 8%.

The Bedan Record is usually a place where we share pictures and stories about our St. Bede family getting together for social and fundraising events. Despite the on-site auction being transformed just weeks before taking place, we are grateful to have completed the Auction and Special Events fiscal year earning $154,479. As nearly 90% of our income is generated from in-person events, the revenue in this area has been greatly impacted, resulting in a decrease of $197,000 for the 2020 fiscal year. Our current fiscal year started out with great positive energy with the introduction of three new holiday fundraisers and other fundraising efforts raising a net of $90,876 to date.

Without continued revenue in the Auction and Special Events area, our ability to bridge the tuition gap and offset operational costs is at risk. While we understand that everyone today is faced with challenges that can be very daunting, we ask you to please help us make up for this deficit by supporting and sharing with others our special fundraisers in 2021, especially our new “Just Imagine” raffle.

Not knowing what 2020 would bring, I can’t help but reflect on how blessed we are for the many amazing years of growth and support we have seen for the Auction as well as the other areas in Development. Especially these past few years, the involvement and participation of our alumni has grown which has brought our St. Bede Family even closer together.

What about Homecoming 2021? That’s a question we can’t quite answer completely today. However, we are actively engaging in conversation on what Homecoming could entail and we look forward to hopefully celebrating this event with our St. Bede Family.

As we gather “in spirit” we know that our St. Bede Family is passionate about making a difference in the lives of our students. With your help and prayers, we are confident that we will get through this period and emerge even stronger. Thank you for your endless support. You are the Spirit of St. Bede.

We rejoice in our countless blessings and you.

2 • THE BEDAN RECORD

Teachers and students reunited in-person and remotely in August after having finished the 2020 school year completely virtual. Armed with masks and following all state and health department guidelines, St. Bede was able to make the necessary changes and sacrifices to provide in-person learning four days a week, with remote learning one day a week. We are proud to say we were successfully able to provide a sense of community in the hallways for the entire first semester.

Students, faculty, and staff committed themselves to respecting those around them, allowing for traditional experiences to still occur. Masses and prayer services were able to take place outside, such as the annual Welcome Mass, held on the football field and in the stands. Students were still able to enjoy the tradition of Spirit Day in a fun and safe environment. Virtual open houses for 8th graders and boarding students were held, as well as virtual parent-teacher conferences.

St. Bede often talks about a commitment to life-long learning and this semester was a true test of this commitment, as learning was alive and well in the classrooms of St. Bede. Teachers and students learned side-by-side as teachers adapted their teaching style and curriculum delivery to include using technology to connect remote students live into the classroom. Remote learners, locally and ten boarding students, unable to return to the U.S. due to travel restrictions, engaged with teachers daily. St. Bede teachers and administrators have continued to show their passion for learning, finding solutions, and overcoming challenges to best meet the academic and spiritual needs of all of our students during this global pandemic.

In an extraordinary year filled with new challenges, we are thankful for each additional day that we have shared together at St. Bede.

Return toLEARNWe are so grateful to have completed the fall semester in person and on campus at St. Bede.

4 • THE BEDAN RECORD

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on many of us, especially on our high school student-athletes. Our Bruin athletes were unable to compete in sports during the spring of 2020. As spring transitioned to summer,

there was hope from the IHSA that there would be sports in the 2020-2021

school year. As school started, there were changes in the mitigation guidelines for the state of Illinois, which moved many of the sports to different seasons, but allowed for sports nonetheless. In the fall, the Academy was able to have both boys and girls golf, cross country, and girls tennis. Due to a surge of cases throughout the fall, the Governor tightened the guidelines and increased mitigation efforts in the state of Illinois, which placed all sports on a pause.

In light of the challenges and setbacks we have had in regards to high school athletics this school year, there have been some bright spots. Because of our amazing St. Bede Community and the generosity of the Gorgal Family, the Mattioda Family, and the Giudici Family, the Academy has been able to begin to renovate and rehab the weight room for our St. Bede student-athletes. The St. Bede weight room will be named in memory of Ken Gorgal ’46 and Rick Mattioda ’72. This upgraded facility, paired with the new strength and conditioning program run by Coach Sam Allen, will help our student-athletes compete at a higher level and be bigger, faster, and stronger athletes. In addition to that, the Academy was also fortunate enough to host the 1A Boys Golf Regional and Sectional at Spring Creek Golf Course with the help of the Potthoff Family. The IHSA also allowed St. Bede to host the 1A Boys and Girls Cross Country Regional in which we welcomed 17 high school teams to the St. Bede grounds.

I look forward to seeing our students playing basketball and bowling and participating in scholastic bowl this winter; volleyball and football this spring; baseball, softball, track & field, boys tennis, and wrestling this summer; and most importantly, having our St. Bede Community back on our beautiful campus!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

The 50th Reunion stands out in the lifetimes of alumni as a most significant occasion for reflecting on the gift that was St. Bede. We are grateful for the generosity of the following

classes for these special gifts to St. Bede in 2020.

The Class of 1968’s gift of five new state-of-the-art ViewSonic Interactive Panels were installed in September throughout the

labs and collaborative spaces in the Perino Science Center. This new digital technology enables students to interact with teachers

on the touchscreen white board without physically being in the classroom, making hybrid teaching and learning easier and

keeping St. Bede on the cutting edge of presentation technology.

The Class of 1969’s gift of a new Learning Management System provides our students and teachers with an improved

and elevated digital online learning platform. Teachers can conduct classroom activities from their portal class pages and communicate with students, parents, and other staff. Students

can access their teachers’ class pages where they participate in classroom discussions, submit coursework, and view scores and grades. The Learning Management System is critical to

maintain St. Bede’s high academic standards.

Although the Class of 1970 was not able to gather for their 50th Reunion due to COVID-19, they are actively raising funds for their

Class Gift. The class will give back through a special Campus Improvement Project to benefit the grounds of St. Bede. This project includes a much needed 60 HP compact tractor and custom campus directional signage to welcome prospective students, alumni, special guests, and visitors throughout the

campus. The Class of 1970 recently met the Wall of Fame Class Challenge and continues to work towards their class gift goal.

The Golden Bedan Wall of Fame Challenge is extended to all classes as they approach the celebration of their 50th anniversary of graduation from St. Bede. The challenge is to match or exceed

$25,000 as a class gift to benefit the Academy. A composite picture of any class meeting this challenge will be displayed as

part of the Golden Bedan Wall of Fame.

Congratulations to all three classes for meeting the Wall of Fame Class Challenge.

Thanks to a generous, anonymous donor, new camera equipment was purchased making it possible to livestream all onsite athletic events

and activities held in the gymnasium and on the football field.

We are grateful to all those who have supported our Virtual Auction and other fundraising efforts. In a typical fiscal year, this area generates over $300,000 - critical funds to keep our tuition affordable. We finished the July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 fiscal year at $154,479.

As we begin 2021, we’re optimistic that together we can work to close this Auction/Special Events fundraising gap and we look forward to the time when we can safely enjoy being together.

WHAT CHANGED?• The Annual St. Bede Auction on April 25, 2020 changed to an online event.

• December’s Jingle & Mingle Dueling Piano event was unable to take place.

• The 2020 Off the Bedan Path trip to Sicily & Amalfi has been rescheduled for October 2021.

• Fan Gear was converted to online sales, rather than the traditional in-person sales on campus.

WHAT’S NEW?We introduced three new, successful fundraisers - we will repeat again!

• The Evergreen Sale helped us kickoff the holiday season and provided our Bruin family the opportunity to purchase festive décor online with direct shipping and local pick-up.

• Joy to the Bruins provided everyone with a safe and interactive way to shop for the holidays. This online shopping experience was filled with over 200 items that included lotto tickets, liquor baskets and gift cards, a variety of trips, as well as a special section featuring our beloved monks.

• Home for the Holidays Raffle was successful and included a choice of exciting, extravagant gifts for two winners from a limited number of tickets sold.

WHAT’S YET TO COME?• Just Imagine Mega Raffle with chances to win over $20,000 AND

an incentive for the seller of the winning tickets.

• A hybrid Auction event including a micro-gala held at the Academy following CDC guidelines, accompanied with online mobile bidding. Date: Saturday, June 19, 2021

St. Bede Academy’s yearly fundraising efforts bridge the 60% gap between the actual cost to educate a student at St. Bede and the actual tuition charged. This year, fundraising looked different due to the pandemic and restrictions on group gatherings. With an outstanding goal to meet, we set out to reimagine fundraising during this time. Despite the difficult circumstances, the generosity of our St. Bede family remained strong in 2020.

The Legacy Project Continues with Phase Three

With pledges from Phase Two being close to completion, we take pride in this milestone that has only been possible through your generosity. The Perino Science Center has brought us countless blessings since its opening in 2018, and too many to count since the beginning of the pandemic.

Just recently we received several Legacy gifts that were doubled, and even tripled, by matching gift companies. This impact makes a tremendous difference in helping us reach our capital campaign goals. Please visit www.st-bede.com/matchingfunds to see if your company, or your spouse’s, offers a matching gift program. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions, as we have worked with many donors to help them through the process.

There are many ways you can leave your legacy, be it through a personal, class, family, or sibling gift; a special group of friends; or a memorial gift, just to name a few. To learn more about Phase Three and the ways you can give to the Legacy Project, visit our website at www.st-bede.com/legacyproject.

Even in the face of adversity St. Bede comes together, and as a result, we move forward and make exciting progress. Please pray for the continued success of this most important effort; your participation is vital to us achieving our goal.

I would be happy to discuss options and ideas for ways you can be involved. We are excited as St. Bede continues its mission and makes a difference for current and future students.

Gratefully,

Julia Yaklich Director of Mission Advancement & Major Gifts 815-250-0359 [email protected]

As we begin 2021, the funding for Phase Three of the Legacy Project continues to move forward. A year ago we finished renovations of the Academy restrooms. The upgrade was long overdue and touchless technology has provided additional health and safety for our students during the pandemic.

Phase Three, which is addressing the renovations needed in the Academy, made impressive progress in 2020. Although circumstances make it difficult to meet in person, we’ve successfully been able to share Phase Three in creative ways through safe, socially distanced local meetings, personal phone calls, Zoom meetings, and the postal service. Despite the pandemic, momentum for the Legacy Project continues.

Phase Three is split into four sub-phases. As soon as we reach our goal of $1,000,000 for Sub-phase 1, we can begin the necessary renovations to the Second Floor Corridor. Since the completion of the restrooms

in the Academy, we have received close to $500,000 in gifts and payments

on new and renewed pledges.

7WINTER ISSUE 2021 •

It is a joy to once again see the students in the hallways for the spring semester. As I look back at the fall, we are glad our students were able to

safely participate in some sports and traditional activities such as spirit week.

I am proud that despite the pandemic, we have continued to remain faithful to our Catholic, Benedictine tradition.

I am happy to report that the monks are fully vaccinated and we look forward with hope to what the future holds. Our Chaplain, Fr. Ronald, has been doing a wonderful job with our students. He has been quick to adapt and we are so glad he is still able to provide prayer services and masses within safety guidelines. Lectio Divina is offered and the students continue their collection to benefit the food pantry and provide service safely to the community. Fr. Dominic teaches junior religion while organizing new ways to present projects completed by the drama department. He has also been working with local libraries across the Midwest to host remote baking programs. Our Prior, Fr. Michael, continues to teach sophomore religion. He also oversees our new Abbey website where you can join us for live-streamed masses at www.stbedeabbey.org.

Although limited to the monastery, the community continues to stay hopeful and busy. With spring on its way, Brother Luke plans to start preparing for the Abbey garden. As COVID-19 restrictions lessen, Fr. Gregory’s passion for visiting patients at local hospitals and hospice centers will continue. Br. Nathaniel is optimistic about again holding his monthly meeting with the Oblates, who gather for prayer, education, food, and fellowship. Br. David stays busy working with our grounds and maintenance staff and enjoys helping the team. Our Monks Market keeps Fr. Patrick dedicating time to his candle making and we invite you to shop online for them and a variety of other wonderful items at www.monksmarket.com.

Fr. Harold is doing well at the Lacon Rehab and Nursing Home and I encourage you to write to him at 401 9th Street, Lacon, Illinois 61540. He would love to hear from you.

We are grateful for all the work of the St. Bede administration, faculty, and staff during this time. They are a true blessing to all of us. We are thankful for all of your support, and we know that without you, we could not continue our important mission of educating young people during one of our most challenging times in St. Bede history. Our dedicated development team is working hard every day to fundraise and find creative ways to fill the Auction & Special Events gap that has been directly affected by the pandemic. Your generosity has never been more crucial to continue and further develop St. Bede Academy.

Please know that you are in our prayers and we encourage you to send us your prayer requests for alumni and friends who are facing illness, challenges in their life, or have passed. Your requests can be mailed to St. Bede or emailed to any monk. The monks' contact information can be found at www.stbedeabbey.org/community-profiles.

Pandemic or no pandemic, we all remain one in the Body of Christ. We will carry on with hope, doing what we have been called to do: praying for the Church, our nation, and the world; not neglecting its needs but trying to put that love into practice. What St. Benedict calls, putting nothing ever before the love of Christ.

May God bless our St. Bede family so you all continue to have wisdom, compassion, and strength.

Abbot Philip Davey, OSB ’65 Vice President-Mission Advancement

My Dear Friends,

A new record was set again this year as over 320 generous donors contributed to the St. Bede Fund, helping to raise over $165,000. We gratefully received $71,500 in matches from several generous donors who helped us achieve our goal.

Inspired with a Class of 1971 Giving Tuesday Challenge Match by Art and Ellen Mueller ’71, congratulations goes out to the Class of 1971 for the most class participation. Their class also increased their participation by 70% from Giving Tuesday 2019. Way to go!

In an extraordinary year filled with new challenges, we are continually grateful for the kindness and generosity shown by our St. Bede Family. Thank you to all those that contributed to make Giving Tuesday 2020 a success!

ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020

A Year in Review

At the turn of this unusual year in which I find myself assuming an additional role of responsibility for Saint Bede Academy, I feel compelled to begin by expressing gratitude for the blessings

those before me have provided. I am incredibly grateful for the entire administration, faculty, and staff, as well as the parent community for their commitment to education and the well-being of our students. We are truly a better and stronger community because of their hard work and adaptation to the rapidly changing environment presented in the Spring of 2020. To everyone who has supported Saint Bede in the past year, in ways large or small,

thank you for your faith and generosity.

The 2019-2020 Annual Report reflects the generosity of so many donors, alumni, and friends who place confidence and trust in the mission and work of Saint Bede. This generosity and unwavering

financial support helped mitigate the financial risk and cover near-term spring 2020 shortfalls caused by the pandemic. Yet, despite a record boarding population in 2019-2020, which added 19 new students and $409,075 in net revenue, the toll on short-term fundraising, especially resulting from the inability to host our single largest social and fundraising event, the Auction, the year ended with an operating deficit of $367,435.

Like so many institutions across the nation, Saint Bede Academy continues to face the unprecedented challenges brought on by the ongoing global pandemic, political and social unrest, and the financial uncertainty impacting too many families. The longer-term financial impacts are without a doubt challenging and considerably more daunting in fiscal year 2020-2021 as the ability to attract new international boarding students due to travel and health restrictions continues. In addition to those restrictions, social gatherings and fundraising remain on hold. Both are essential elements to the financial health and stability of Saint Bede. The growth of our boarding program, both domestic and international, is crucial to the long-term sustainability of Saint Bede. On page 23 you will learn of ways you can work with us to secure more boarders. Your help in this endeavor is needed now more than ever.

Fortunately, the importance of Catholic education and the ability of a small, student-centered institution, such as Saint Bede, has allowed us to retain our student enrollment with the help of the Promise for the Future Emergency Fund led by the Class of ’61. This immediate response from our generous benefactors created a pool of financial assistance to help families, specifically impacted by COVID-19.

Most importantly, we have been able to meet the needs of our students since August 2020 by safely keeping our classrooms open to in-person instruction and providing the academic, social, and emotional support our students deserve. As you will learn in “Counting Our Blessings” it was also a year of great accomplishment and special experiences. From the moving outdoor, parking lot graduation ceremony honoring the Class of 2020 to the opening of newly renovated modern restrooms facilities in the 131 year-old Academy, we have been blessed.

While the financial impacts of COVID-19 were unexpected and disruptive, they are not insurmountable. What will truly allow Saint Bede to endure current financial challenges and continue our strategic and capital plans to establish financial stability is—as it has always been—you, our Saint Bede Family.

Eve Postula ’84Superintendent & Treasurer

Matching GiftsThank you to our generous donors who submitted their gifts to be matched. Because of you, St. Bede received over $43,000 in matching gifts.

Matching gifts make it possible to double or even triple your gift. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match most charitable contributions made by their employees, spouses, and retirees.

Please check to see if your company matches gifts by visiting www.st-bede.com/matchingfunds. We are grateful for your efforts to submit for a match. For questions or assistance, please contact Katherine Koyak at 815-250-0278 or [email protected].$

A Tax Free Way to Help St. Bede AcademyDid you know your IRA could be a gift to St. Bede that gives back?

Consider making an IRA Charitable Rollover gift to St. Bede Academy. Your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) can be donated to St. Bede and help our legacy to live on.

Many generous alumni and friends 72 years and older are making gifts to St. Bede through their IRA by donating their RMD or part of it as a direct donation to St. Bede which is not taxable.

A special dedicated IRA Charitable Contributions page including FAQ’s and instructions for making this type of gift can be found on our website on the Support page. Contact Julia Yaklich at 815-250-0359 or [email protected].

† Deceased

The St. Bede boarding program is a vital part of continuing the St. Bede tradition and it is an essential component in continuing the day-to-day operation of the Abbey and Academy. The gift of a St. Bede education is undeniable, and we call on our St. Bede family to continue spreading the word about its value and the accessibility of it in the Illinois Valley and beyond.

Our hope is to extend the St. Bede mission nationally and internationally, and we need your help in doing so. The cost to attend St. Bede as a residential boarding student is $35,000 a year. However, if you are able to refer a student who is interested in the boarding program, they will receive a $10,000 tuition discount.

Your gift of a boarder referral is a gift that keeps on giving. If you know anyone in your family, parish, or community interested in learning more about St. Bede Academy and scholarship opportunities, please direct them to www.st-bede.com/boarding-information or our Dean of Residential Programs, Marcia Wagner at [email protected] for more information.

THE GIFT OF A BOARDER. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING.

We ask you to reach out to relatives, friends, and acquaintances who may have interest in sending their child to St. Bede and share the following:

With our Alumni Referral Discount, the domestic boarding tuition of $25,000 is well below similar programs in the Midwest, costing $54,500 to $63,000.

An internationally diverse opportunity to interact and learn with students from all over the world, the Midwest and Illinois.

Safe, in-person learning on campus five days a week.

Highly acclaimed and rigorous college prep education program with 100% advancement to top universities/colleges.

Provides a safe and unique campus with a security surveillance system that exceeds its counterparts throughout the state of Illinois. Each boarding house offers security cameras and a secure keypad entry.

7 AP and 14 honors level courses are offered along with the opportunity to earn college transcript credits through early-college and dual-credit programs.

16 sports and 25 clubs/ organizations
