Being your Headteacher and getting to know you all has been an absolute privilege and I know it will take me some time to adjust to my new life without all of you in it. I came to Coombe Road Primary School in April 2015 under an Executive Headship with Mr. McConnachie and Mr. Watson. It didn’t take long for Coombe Road Primary School to steal my heart and I just could not bring myself to leave you all! In June 2017, we then received our fantastic Ofsted Report and I could not have been prouder. Personally, I have been through a number of significant events whilst your Headteacher, including the death of my beautiful mum and major surgery at a most inconvenient time! I will always remember those of you who showed me so much kindness and understanding particularly at these times. Thank you for being an incredible community and for trusting me with your most precious possessions; our children. I will miss each and every one of them but know that they, and you, are now being left in good hands with your new Headteacher, Mr. Scrase. Coombe Road Primary School is in a very strong position and I know that you will support Mr. Scrase in shaping and growing the school further so it continues to thrive. MORE FAREWELLS It has been an absolute delight to have been part of the Coombe Road family for over 28 years. Together, like most families, we have shared moments of laughter, tears, excitement and sorrow. I have watched hundreds of fabulous children grow and shine and some of you have returned with your own magnificent children. I am sorry to be saying goodbye to everyone at Coombe Road but it’s time to hang up my calculator and put my feet up! I will really miss you all and I would like to wish you all good health and the very best in whatever you do. If you see me out please give me a wave!

Jean

Hi and Goodbye from Ms Allen and Ms Hardman, As a combined total we have taught at Coombe Road for 53 years! There has never been a dull moment. We both thought it was time to leave when we started to worry that we would be teaching the grandchildren of our first pupils here! We have know each other since we both trained at Brighton University and which is an alarming number of years ago now! Over the years we have seen many changes but Coombe Road has always been a warm and caring school and will always be close to our hearts. However, you have not seen the last of us yet. We can't quite tear ourselves completely away and will be back to do some teaching in Key Stage One. Thank you for all your support and for sharing your lovely children with us over the years.

Ms Hardman & Ms Allen

THANK YOU My sincere thanks goes to Jean, our Business Manager, who has worked alongside me in Starlight

Room. Jean has been a wonderful colleague, support and friend and we wish her much happiness

and relaxation in her retirement. Thank you Jean – you are one of life’s good ones. Xx

Ms Hardman and Ms Allen have been here for many years and have seen many changes in education

over their teaching careers. They have supported our children and families past and present here at

Coombe Road Primary. I know that many of you will hold very fond memories of these fabulous

women – but, as they say, you will likely see them at some point again in the future. Thank you to

you both – you have made an incredible difference to many lives over the years and are Wonder

Women! Xx

Mrs Austin will also be saying farewell (again!) – I

am not sure if this will be the final goodbye; you’ll

have to wait and see... Many thanks Mrs. Austin for

continuing to teach our PPA this term. Xx

We also say farewell to Mr. McGuigan. He has

already made a huge difference to the music

teaching and learning here at Coombe Rd. and he

will be missed greatly. Thank you so much Mr

McGuigan – you’re a star. Xxx

I also want to say a heartfelt thanks to all our team here at Coombe Road. They all work so hard to

make sure our school is the sunshiny place that it is. Every single one of them genuinely care and

want the very best for our children. I will miss being a part of this team but am confident that this

new chapter will be a happy one. Thank you Coombe Roaders; it has been an absolute privilege to

work alongside you as your Headteacher. Xx

HAPPY MOUNTAIN Happy Mountain are delighted to have won the £1,000 from Dobies for our mural! Thanks so much to everyone who voted. We still have a bit of work to do to get the mural started and are hoping to work with children in school and Sussex Wildlife Trust to help us with the design. We also have funding to build a ladybird bench that will be placed opposite the Busy Bee Book Swap. The ladybird bench will have a children’s book swap underneath. It’s being built at the moment. We’ll update you when it’s ready to go and send photos. Here’s the Busy Bee Facebook

TRIP TO KNOCKHATCH We had a wonderful time at Knockhatch. Rather than something material, I wanted to give our children a farewell gift of this fabulous experience which I hope they will remember always. The staff at Knockhatch said that I was very brave having the whole school there but I knew they would not let me down – they were all fantastic! Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped on the day to make sure all our children could attend – Jazmyn, Yasmin T, Amy, Victoria, Shane, Megan, Yasmin M, Kat, Katrina and Sam - and many thanks to Knockhatch.

WITHDEAN ATHLETICS Fifteen of Coombe Road's finest athletes took part in the annual Withdean Athletics at Withdean Stadium, Brighton. It was a great experience for all those who took part with events in throwing, running and jumping. Many of our children displayed their athletic versatility by competing in multiple events; some children finished a sprint to then compete in the standing long jump. Well done to Archie and Fin for adding medals to their respective trophy cabinets. A big thank you to Mrs. Mechen, Gemma and Charlotte for their help. Lots of fun was had in the sun.

Mr O'Connor (Sports Lead)

COOMBEDEAN CUP Our Coombe Road footballers made the trip to face local competitors Coldean in the annual Coombedean Cup. The result didn't go our way as we faced a very well-drilled home side. We travelled with 15 enthusiastic players from Indigo and Amethyst Classes. They represented our school with their usual dignity and sporting values. It was a day of mixed emotions as some experienced the buzz of donning the special blue and white stripes for the first time while, for others, this was the last time we will see them represent Coombe Road football team. A HUGE well done to all involved!

LYMLEY WOODS RESIDENTIAL Our Year 6 children made us incredibly proud as they stayed on their residential at Lymley Woods. They enjoyed camping in the sunshine and cooking on the camp fire, as well as archery, adventure playground, walks in the countryside, crafts, den-building, collage, badge making, crate challenge and zip wire. The staff at Lymley Woods commented on the wonderful nature of the group who all looked after each other and demonstrated all our Golden Values: commitment, opportunity, respect and excellence. Congratulations to Frankki who beat the primary school solo record for the crate challenge – Hurray!

ODEON TRIP I wasn’t getting away without having to make some final difficult decisions! This trip was planned for KS2 to view the films that they wrote, directed, produced and starred in on the big screen. Due to the extreme heat, Amethyst Class attended and we were able to get the children back quickly, avoiding the heat, with the support of our parents/carers (and Grandparents as Alfie would state!) – Many thanks for your understanding and support in this decision. Emerald and Indigo Classes enjoyed watching their films in school, and still got their popcorn and goody bags! Many thanks to Silverbox for supporting with these projects and arranging the viewings. The good work in these enrichment projects will continue next year in KS2.
