1. INTRODUCTION

The first Sustainable Development Goal aims to “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”.

The 2030 agenda acknowledges that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including

extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable

development.

The first Sustainable Development Goal aims to “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”. As

recalled by the foreword of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals Report, at the Millennium

Summit in September 2000, 189 countries unanimously adopted the Millennium Declaration,

pledging to “spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and

dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty”.

Poverty eradication is addressed in Chapter II of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (2002),

which stressed that eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge facing the world today and

an indispensable requirement for sustainable development, particularly for developing countries.

Priority actions on poverty eradication include:

• Improving access to sustainable livelihoods, entrepreneurial opportunities, and productive

resources

• Providing universal access to basic social services

• Progressively developing social protection systems to support those who cannot support

themselves

• Empowering people living in poverty and their organizations

• Addressing the disproportionate impact of poverty on women

• Working with interested donors and recipients to allocate increased shares of ODA to poverty

eradication; and

• Intensifying international cooperation for poverty eradication.

Ending poverty in all its forms everywhere forms the first goal of the 2030 Sustainable Development agenda. It calls for ensuring social protection, enhancing access to basic services, and building resilience against the impacts of natural disasters which can cause severe damage to people’s resources and livelihoods. The international community agrees, through the Sustainable Development agenda for 2030, that economic growth must be inclusive, especially of the most poor and vulnerable, and aims to eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere in the next 15 year. The Government of India has many progressive schemes, including the world’s largest employment guarantee scheme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, and the National Social Assistance Programme.

The decline of extreme poverty continues, but the pace has slowed, and the world is not on track to achieving the target of ending poverty by 2030. Extreme poverty today is concentrated and overwhelmingly affects rural populations. Increasingly, it is exacerbated by violent conflicts and climate change. Tackling the remaining pockets of extreme poverty will be challenging due to their persistence and complexity—often involving the interplay of social, political, and economic factors. Effective social protection schemes and policies, along with government spending on key services, can help those left behind get back on their feet and find a way out of poverty.

2. INITIATIVES OF JSS ACADEMY OF HIGHER EDUCATION &

RESEARCH UNDER GOAL-1

Since its inception, JSSAHER has seen an exponential growth in a short span of time due to

the unique programs, which are being offered, keeping in mind the problems of the society.

The programs are designed to address the issues of the society pertaining to water, health,

food, and environment. JSSAHER has contributed to achieve most of the SDGs through

providing quality education and training professionals who have the zeal to take up the

challenges related to SDGs. Other than conventional teaching-learning, the ,JSSAHER has

been involved in several activities which are considerably contributing to each and every SDG

either directly or indirectly through continuous training of students to take up social

responsibility during and after graduation. They are being trained in various skills and

supported for startup or entrepreneurship activities, thereby creating job opportunities for

several people who are economically under privileged.

Education has a direct correlation with income. The higher the level of education, the less

likely the person is to fall below poverty line. This is because education imparts skills and

knowledge associated with higher wages. JSS AHER ensured inclusive education to

increase the chance of employability even during COVID-19 pandemic.

Why?

Eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge facing the world today and an

indispensable requirement for sustainable development, particularly for developing

country like India.

How?

• Skill based education & training

• Scholarship program

• Start-ups and self-employment

• Health care

Pledge to support such children by providing free education and boarding at JSS School The Covid pandemic has devastated many a life and the worst affected are the children! The second Covid wave has been crueler to the children as scores of families have been wiped out, and thousands of children have been orphaned. Today we see thousands of children who have lost one of their parents or both. Besides the pandemic also left many families economically shattered with no resources available to support the children beyond basic sustenance and these children will perhaps miss their education which is an important of their growing up and survival. This can change if we all come together and do something about it.

His Holiness Jagadguru Sri ShivarathriDeshikendraMahaswamiji, the spiritual head of Sri Suttur Math and the President of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru and Chancellor of JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research has pledged to support such children by providing free education and boarding at JSS School, Suttur, Mysuru District, Karnataka, India. The children will be completely supported for their education from class 1 to 10 and will include their living, boarding, medical care, and basic personal needs.

6. JSSAHER HELPING THE PEOPLE IN LOWER SOCIO ECONOMIC

STRATA- EDUCATION & ENDING POVERTY

Academic dynamism with skill development and training towards self employment to

eradicate poverty

Poverty is more than just the lack of income or access to resources – it manifests itself in diminished opportunities for education, social discrimination, and the inability to participate in decision-making processes. For instance, in developing countries, children in the poorest households are four times less likely to be in school than those of the richest. But extreme deprivation is not just about wellbeing and opportunity; it is a question of survival itself. For people living in poverty, especially those in extreme poverty, they have few ways to access basic life necessities, such as healthcare, education, and food. “Our wellbeing is linked to each other. Growing inequality is detrimental to economic growth and undermines social cohesion, increasing political and social tensions and, in some circumstances, driving instability and conflicts.” (WHO)

• Curriculum enriched with managerial concepts and training • Hospital postings to help students to develop the skills for being work ready and

understand its operations • Undertake various skill development training programs to enhance the skill set

amongst students

managerial roles, tasks and activities that are required by a new manager at work. The

students are trained in the various concepts of management and the theories informing the

practices. Students are also trained on managing both the resources and the staff that they

responsible for in the organisation. It encourages the students to understand the

organisational development and change. Key management processes are explained in detail,

including managing time, managing self, managing resources, staff development, budgeting

and monitoring expenditure, managing communication as well as information technology.

Teaching & Learning

Hospital postings being an integral component of curriculum helps students to get a real

exposure to health care delivery systems. Students have the benefit of hands-on-

experiential learning by solving real-time problems and issues in healthcare facility.

The department also organizes visits to various for enhanced hands-on learning about the

advancements in their respective areas.

Owing to the declining values of intra-family relations and the societal values in general, many elderly persons who are in the evening of their lives have to undergo physical and mental stress. Those who once lived a joyful, and healthy life in a family are now devoid of affection and care. It was necessary to provide a roof on their head to help them gain mental poise and peace and lead a peaceful, anxiety-free, dignified life.

With the blessings of Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, JSS Hiriyara Mane was started on 11th August 2000 at Mysore. On the occasions of national and religious festivals’ days, feasts are arranged, and games are organized to entertain them and, prizes are awarded. The home is taken care of by a manager and seven supporting staff.

For senior citizens seeking to spend their twilight years in a peaceful and comfortable place, JSS Hiriyara Mane is the place to be.
