From the PresidentGeorge F. Arnold, PhD President of Silver Lake College

Adlai E. Stevenson once said, “Change is inevitable. Change for the better is a full-time job.” Well, what a change we have experienced at Silver Lake Col-lege over this past year! So many people have been working not only full-time, but over-time, in order to make improvements to our campus and enhance the opportunities and services provided to our students.

One of the biggest transformations has come in the form of having our undergraduate students living on campus. This past August, after a complete renovation, Clare Hall opened with rave reviews to the first group of residents. Both students and parents were so impressed with the new accommodations. And, having students living here full time has infused the campus with a new sense of energy and excitement. In turn, this has added a whole new dimension to the residential life component of our campus. We now have a full time Di-rector of Residence Life who, in addition to overseeing daily life in Clare Hall,

has been busy planning vari-ous activities for the students.

This project would not have been possible without the generous support of many people. A special thanks to the

Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity who graciously endured many hours of dust and construction noise while they awaited the completion of their new home near campus, Chiara Convent; to the staff who oversaw this project and made sure everything was ready on time for our students arrival; and finally to our donors. Without your help, this project would not have been possible. We sincerely appreciate your investment in our College.

With all of the changes that have taken place on campus, I would personally like to invite you to come and visit us. We would enjoy giving you a tour and sharing with you the exciting plans we have for our future.

business breakfast Series brings local ceOs to campus

Silver Lake College, in partnership with the george Reis Investment group and Bank First national, joined together to host a bi-annual Business Breakfast Series on campus designed to showcase

local CEOs and the current chal-lenges they are facing in their in-dustry. According to President Ar-nold, “This Business Breakfast has been a great way of engaging local business leaders with the campus and having them share their ex-pertise with our students and other leaders within our com-munity.”

Last fall’s breakfast, en-titled, “Doing More Than Just Keeping Your Head Above

Water in Our Economy” fea-tured Dave DeRosier, President &

CEO of Wisconsin nationwide trans-

portation, glen tellock, President & CEO of the Manitowoc Company, and Mark Skogen, President & CEO of Fes-tival Foods. Each individual spoke about their respective industries and how the downturn in the economy has effected their operations. All the speakers echoed the same sentiments, “Challenging eco-nomic times compel companies to know their costs, stay focused, and keep cus-tomers satisfied.”

neal Verfuerth, President & CEO of Orion Energy Systems and Bill nasgo-vitz, Founder, President and Portfolio Manager of Heartland Advisors were the featured presenters at the spring Busi-ness Breakfast. Both of these individuals spoke of common sense investing during this tumultuous time for the economy which includes investigating companies that are nimble, such as Orion, who have the flexibility to react quickly to changes in the marketplace.

celebrating a new educational partnership

This past March, Silver Lake College celebrated a new educational partnership with Mount Senario Education Center (MSEC) in Ladysmith, WI. Located on the sight of the former Mount Senario College, the property was purchased by private investors, Jeff and Michelle Hause of Stillwater, Minnesota, with the hopes of reviving higher educational opportu-nities within the region.

Silver Lake College was the first edu-cational partner to join MSEC and begin-ning in the fall of 2009, Silver Lake will be offering its business degree comple-tion programs along with its Master of Arts in Education and Master of Science in Organizational Behavior. Dr. george Arnold, President of Silver Lake College, called the agreement a renaissance for educational opportunities for the area. “The future provides great hope, op-portunities, and options for the people of Ladysmith and surrounding regions that will benefit from the educational programs offered at MSEC.” According to Dr. george grinde, Vice President for

Academic Affairs at Silver Lake College, this partnership is a perfect match for the College. “Silver Lake College believes in the value of education and this partner-ship is a great opportunity for the people

nursing program receives accreditation

In April, the nursing Program re-ceived notification that it was granted accreditation approval from the Com-mission on Collegiate nursing Education (CCnE). Officially recognized by the u.S. Secretary of Education as a national ac-creditation agency, the Commission on Collegiate nursing Education (CCnE) is an autonomous accrediting agency con-tributing to the improvement of the pub-lic’s health and ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs preparing effective nurses. As a voluntary, self-regulatory process, CCnE accreditation supports and encourages continuing self-assess-ment by nursing education programs and the continuing growth and improvement of collegiate professional education.

As part of the accreditation process, Silver Lake developed a Bachelor of Sci-ence in nursing (BSn) Completion Pro-gram whereby its first set of graduates participated in Commencement ceremo-nies on May 10, 2009 and received their pins on June 4, 2009. nancy niesing, a recent graduate of the program com-mented, “My primary goal to pursue my BSn degree was to acquire the required credentials for my position as a clinical educator, but I gained so much more. I gained a broader view and understand-ing of the world and the people around me. I examined and reevaluated my per-sonal values system. I learned to criti-cally evaluate information and I gleaned a great deal about learning principles and research that could be applied to my job. I have become more adept at the use of

technology for enhancing my skills as an educator. I learned to work as a team to complete group projects. I have achieved much more than the credibility I initially sought. The seed for continuous growth and learning was planted, and a dream has been fulfilled.”

The degree completion program is designed for current Rn’s, those with an Associate’s Degree in nursing or for those with a Diploma in nursing. This program is offered in Manitowoc, Wausau, Rhinelander, Ladysmith and

nursing students at commencement on may 10, 2009 from l–r back row: Kathy barta-Orlet, barb reiss, marcy Davies, Darlene TeStroete, nancy niesing. front row: Sue Kassner, january meyer, jackie Downey.

will available on-line starting in the fall of 2009. Kathi Calabresa, program de-veloper stated, “The need for knowledge-able and skilled nursing leaders has never been greater. The health care system is undergoing fundamental restructuring that will rely on nurses who are prepared to assume leadership roles to improve pa-tient outcomes. The BSn completion pro-gram at Silver Lake College prepares the baccalaureate nurse to assume a leader-ship role for managing the complexities of patient care wherever they practice.”

Silver lake participates in recyclemaniaThis year, Silver Lake College was one of over 470 colleges

across the united States that participated in Recycle-mania, a program that strives to minimize waste on college campuses while raising awareness of recycling and waste issues. Over a 10

week period, the College’s garbage and recycling was weighed, and in turn, the number of pounds of garbage and recycling per person was calculated. Our totals were compared with the oth-er area participating colleges, particularly Lakeshore technical College and uW–Manitowoc, and we are proud to say that we met our goal of having the fewest pounds of waste, both garbage and recycling, per person than these other campuses.

Spring Tonic celebrates 20 years at Silver lake Saturday, March 28th, marked the 20th anniversary cele-

bration of the annual Spring tonic Conference held on campus. Organized and hosted by the Special Education Department, the conference gathers top educational professionals from around the country to present a variety of sessions to teachers and other interested individuals addressing cur-rent trends/topics in the field of educa-tion, especially topics relating to work-ing effectively with children/youth with special learning and behavior needs.

This year’s keynote address was de-livered by Erin Dyer, M.A., CCC-SLP, a Board-Recognized Specialist in Fluency Disorders with over 30 years of experi-ence as a Speech/Language Pathologist. Dyer’s keynote address entitled, “Revive Your Inner Spirit”, focused on remind-ing those in attendance of what you can do to help yourself every single day of the week.

In addition to Dyer’s presentation, some of the other sessions included: Dennis the Menace goes to Kindergarten: Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Early

Childhood and Primary Classroom, presented by Michael Axelrod, Ph.D. and Bradley Dickey, M.S.E. of the university of Wisconsin in Eau Claire. This presentation was designed to

arm teachers with simple yet effective strategies that target noncompliance, off-task behavior and minor escalations in behavior in early childhood and pri-mary grade settings.

Judy C. Lampbert, Ph.D. of the uni-versity of Wisconsin Oshkosh presented Student-Involved Classroom Assess-ment: Essential Characteristics and Classroom Application. This session focused on the key characteristics of assessment for learning along with spe-cific examples of assessment measures from K–8 literacy classrooms.

Other topics included: Keys to a Suc-cessful Post-Secondary transition, Hot topics in Special Education Legislation and How to Advocate for Learners with Exceptionalities, Increasing Parental Empowerment and Decreasing Parental Attrition in the Education of Multicul-

tural Children, Professor gizmo—Amazing Science Presenta-tions, and Aspergers 101, among many others.

A Night to RememberScholarship benefit Gala

In April, Silver Lake College held its third annual “A night to Remember” Scholarship Benefit gala at the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. The gala, de-signed to raise funds for the Silver Lake College Student Scholarship Program, has raised over $100,000 since its incep-tion.

This year’s event, themed, an evening in Italy, featured a gourmet Italian din-ner, silent and oral auction, and the Silver Lake College a capella men’s group, the Bad Habits, provided entertainment.

Mark your calendars for next year’s event scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010.

A Celebration of Ideasannual Student Symposium

The sixth annual student symposium, A  Celebration  of Ideas,” was held on campus in April featuring a variety of stu-dent presentations. The Symposium began with a keynote ad-dress entitled, “The Liberal Arts: A Pathway to Success” pre-sented by Sister Martina Van Ryzin, Professor Emeritus at Silver Lake College.

A Celebration of Ideas started with a simple idea—to allow an opportunity for students to share their work with the Silver Lake College community. The idea grew through discussions among faculty and sparked excitement in students, staff, and administrators. In 2004, the college sponsored the first confer-ence, giving students the opportunity to experience and par-ticipate in inquiry-based intellectual discourse.

The conference’s ongoing theme—A Celebration of Ideas—embraces the Silver Lake College mission and philosophy of education. Dr. george Arnold, president of Silver Lake Col-lege explains, “This significant event in the life of the college provides our students with a wonderful opportunity to express how they have been able to celebrate ideas as learners engaged in our curriculum. It also illustrates the value of the liberal arts in preparing them for the world of work; the symposium allows them to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that are neces-sary in today’s global market.”

The college-wide academic conference brings together stu-dents, faculty, staff, and community members in celebrating in-tellectual inquiry across disciplines. Many Silver Lake College students are involved as presenters in concurrent sessions on a wide range of topics; they have the opportunity to showcase their work and demonstrate connections between liberal arts studies and professional preparation. Patrick gagnon, director of liberal arts and professor of history at Silver Lake College, believes that the best thing about this conference is that “it gives students at Silver Lake the opportunity to deliver the type of presentation usually given only at a state or national academic conference.”

Sister martina Van ryzin, professor emeritus of Silver lake college, and members of her family at the Symposium.

now in its sixth year, the symposium is continually expand-ing its sessions. Vicki I. Ansorge, Symposium Director and chair of the Department of English/World Languages, explains, “The Symposium continues to evolve to reflect the trends in various disciplines and student interest. Our goal has always been to engage the entire community in an exploration of ideas and to offer another opportunity to empower students through their education and to cultivate lifelong learning.”

Music saw the addition of a new handbell ensemble con-ducted by Sandra Sudbrink Eithun ’88. The handbells were obtained through a grant from the American guild of English Handbell Ringers Area VII C.H.I.M.E. grant program. The ten member ensemble made their debut as part of the Spring Sym-posium presentations this past April. According to Eithun, “It was a pleasure to work with the members of the group even though most had never touched a handbell before their experi-ence in this ensemble. We began the course by working on the fundamentals of ringing and proper handbell technique. We rehearsed for nearly two hours each week which enabled me to

cover a lot of ground and work with the ringers on the musical facets that are unique to handbells.”

In addition to the handbells, one of the spring concerts featured the Concert Choir performing the world premiere of composer Michael Fetzer’s “An Ascension of Larks.” “An As-cension of Larks” is the setting of four a capella choruses cen-tered around poems written by William Wordsworth, William Shakespeare, and an anonymous English Poet. The piece uti-lizes creative compositional techniques to meet the challenges of the poetry, which then becomes the challenges of both the conductor and the singer. Mr. Fetzer was in attendance at the concert and conducted a post concert dialogue with the audi-ence addressing the topics of text as inspiration and composi-tional practice.

a brief history of the collegeIn 1957, due to the increasing demands

facing the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and the individuals and indus-tries they served, Mother M. Edna Ryan, Superior general of the Order, together with the members of her general council made the decision to build a new college. The architectural firm of Brielmaier and Sons out of Milwaukee prepared an ini-tial estimate of $3,000,000 as the approx-imate cost to build the College. This sum seemed by many to be significantly out of reach for the sister’s resources; however, Mother Edna was not to be dissuaded. Steadfast in her determination that a new College would be constructed, Mother Edna launched her community of sisters on a $3,000,000 fundraising project.

One million dollars was to be acquired through pledges of the people in parishes where sisters taught and from local busi-ness and industry. A second million was to be raised by the sisters themselves, and the third million was to be borrowed. When Mother M. Agna Beller became Superior general of the sisters in August, 1957, sufficient funds had been collected to warrant the general council’s decision to have the architects draw up the final plans for the new college.

The Immel Construction Company of Fond du Lac was retained as the general contractor and on november 9, 1958, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to signify the beginning of construction on the main building that would become Silver Lake College. Throughout the two year construction process, a large cluster of buildings was erected and de-signed to serve a variety of functions for the College, including a residential space for more than 100 sister students and teachers at the College. According to the Friday, December 2, 1960 edition of the green Bay Register, “On September 2, 1960, 104 sisters moved from their quar-ters at Holy Family Convent, hallowed for them by time-honored and sacred memories, to their modern, collegiate dwelling just across the road space, but spanning almost a century in time.”

The newspaper described the resi-dential space as follows, “The five –story residence wing is divided such that the

two top floors are open curtained type dormitory sleeping areas with a small in-firmary unit to the north. necessary bath and toilet facilities with utility rooms are located on each floor. The ground and first floors have private spaces for the sis-ters with community rooms, lobby and reception areas off the ground floor. The basement contains laundry and storage rooms with recreational facilities.”

a home for 50 yearsFrom 1960 to 2009, sister students

and faculty would come to occupy the residential space at the College. However for two sisters, Sister Marella Wagner and Sister Martina Van Ryzin, it would be the only place they called home for al-most 50 years.

In the fall of 1960, Sister Martina Van Ryzin came to Silver Lake College to teach Math after finishing her doctoral degree at the university of Wisconsin in

Madison. upon her arrival, she moved into the new residence and settled into a room on the first floor on the west side of the building. Outside her window a small tree was planted. “When I moved in, I remember having to look down to see the tree outside my window and when I moved out in January 2009, I had to crouch down and look up out the win-dow to see the top.” While her neighbors on the first floor came and went, Sister Martina stayed in the same room her entire time. “I guess I had the option of changing rooms several times through-out the years, but I was comfortable and so I just stayed.”

Sister Marella Wagner moved into the residential space while she was a student at the College. “I can remember talking about the new College being built during my freshman year and it was very excit-ing. When I moved in, the students were housed on the third and fourth floors and

the faculty were on the first and second floors,” said Sister Marella. She joined the Silver Lake faculty in 1966 and moved into a room on the third floor. She stayed in that location until April 2009, when she moved to Chiara Convent near cam-pus. “It was difficult to leave the space at the College,” she said. “It was really the place we grew up.”

The Transformation of clare hall

Work began on transforming Clare Hall to a full time residence hall for un-dergraduate students in the fall of 2008; simultaneously, construction also began on the new Chiara Convent, located near campus, which serves as the new home for the sisters who are currently working at the College. Work progressed on both buildings throughout the fall and spring, and in April 2009, the Sisters moved into the newly constructed Chiara Convent.

The Clare Hall renovation was spear-headed by the construction company of C.D. Smith from Fond du Lac, WI along with Bray Architects, Inc. from Milwau-kee. The project was completed and ready for occupancy in August 2009.

Boasting a potential occupancy of 178 students, Clare Hall was transformed into a four floor residential space offering a variety of living accommodations for our students. The fourth floor is comprised of suites, in which two bedrooms, housing a total of four students, are joined to share a private bathroom. The first through third floors offer both individual and double rooms with common bath spaces located on each floor. In addition, each floor has a variety of amenities includ-ing kitchenettes, exercise rooms, small group study rooms, and student lounge spaces for students to gather and social-ize. The entire space is climate controlled and offers wireless internet. A formal dedication and blessing was held on Au-gust 19, 2009 with Father Daniel J. Felton presiding along with a community open house on August 20.

expanding the residential experience

As part of a multi-year strategic plan, Silver Lake committed to making an ex-ceptional residential experience available to each undergraduate during his or her time at the College. “We view a dynamic residential experience as one of the most important elements in creating a suc-cessful environment for our students,” said Dr. george F. Arnold, President of Silver Lake. “We believe that learning takes place around the clock, both inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, it is essential that the ‘outside the classroom’ activities, facilities, and personnel be ex-ceptional in every way.”

Part of the exceptional personnel in-cludes Rachel Fischer, the new Director of Residential Life. “I am excited about having the opportunity to help create an outstanding residential experience here on campus,” said Rachel. “It is a chance to really build student engagement through activities and events that they (the students) view as being of real inter-est and value.” One of the first activities on campus included a weeklong orienta-tion session for new students that culmi-nated in a Matriculation Ceremony. Dur-ing this week, students had the chance to learn about each other, the college, and began planning and developing activi-

ties that they will pursue throughout the year. “When students arrive on campus for the first time it is essential that they immediately feel as though they belong,” said Rachel. “We are going to give them an opportunity to get involved with cam-pus life from the minute they arrive.” In addition to the host of activities already planned for the fall, the college added Men’s and Women’s golf along with sev-eral intramural sports in which the stu-dents can participate.

as part of their orientation week, new students took part in a team building exercise at the Kohler experiential learning center.

helping to find a passionJan Algozine, Director of Experiential Learning, has worn

many hats since joining Silver Lake College in 1977. However, the common thread throughout her 30 plus years here at the col-lege has always been working in positions that serve students. now she is taking those same talents and skills and helping not only students, but alumni and community members as well.

As a result of the College receiving a title III grant from the united States Department of Education, this past December Jan became the Director or Experiential Learning. This posi-tion has allowed to her to reach out to the campus community and beyond in order to help match individuals with experiences and jobs that best suit their interests and skills. One of her most

popular activities has been leading employment workshops throughout Wisconsin.

What started as an initial request by a local parish in Kiel, WI to help those suffering from the economic downturn, has now rapidly expanded into a high demand program. The em-ployment workshops are designed for individuals who are cur-rently unemployed, underemployed, or simply afraid of losing their job and do not know where to begin. Jan takes the par-ticipants through a variety of exercises designed to help give them words to identify their skills and strengths. In turn, she helps match them with appropriate career and job choices. She also helps participants learn how to develop resumes and cover letters; how to predict job changes and careers of the future; how to prepare for interviews and also learn about options for continuing their education.

Jan says she views her job as someone who can help offer hope during a time of grief. “For those losing their jobs, the grief can be overwhelming and often their first question is ‘How am I going to pay the bills?’ In many situations, there are a va-riety of resources out there and so one of the best things we can offer is hope. We are the ones who can reach out and help each other.”

Jan has sessions coming up this fall in Manitowoc and Lady-smith but is also willing to meet with people on an individual basis. If you would like more information about this program, or a listing of upcoming workshops, please contact Jan Algo-zine at 920-686-6192 or via e-mail at [email protected].

“My entire career has been about working with people. I love helping others find their passion by guiding them through a process that hopefully enables them to make their dreams come true.”

A New Face in Alumni RelationsAlumni Relations has a new face spearheading the Alumni

Department. This fall, Rachel gretzinger, a 2009 graduate of Silver Lake College, joined the Alumni Relations Department and will be overseeing all of the activities, events, and alumni relation components of the College. Her predecessor, Cindy St. John ’99, who had been splitting her time between Alumni and Admissions, joined the Admissions Office full time as an adult recruiter.

Rachel is originally from Wausaukee, Wisconsin and re-ceived a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Theology. A Rath Scholar, she maintained a 3.95 gPA throughout her tenure here on campus all while being extremely involved in campus activities. She served as the President of Student Forum, Edi-tor of the weekly student newspaper, a member of Mattermind, the layout and design artist for Silver Reflections, and an active participant in Campus Ministry.

Rachel chose Silver Lake College because she was looking for a small Catholic college that was far enough away from home, but not too far away. She also had heard about Silver Lake from her great Aunt Louise Demers. A first generation college stu-dent, Rachel said that Silver Lake was the perfect fit for her. “It provided me with a nurturing environment where I was really cared for which also gave me tremendous opportunity to grow as a person.”

now, having the chance to work in the Alumni Department, Rachel can see the college from a whole different perspective. “Having a chance to work with alums and the individuals I worked with as a student is a fantastic job. I love hearing about other people’s experiences while they were students here on

campus and helping to plan activities and events that allow them to reconnect with the college and re-live some of those fond memories.”

Windows to Education

For nearly fifty years, the stained glass windows in the Silver Lake College Chapel have been a source of inspiration and beauty for all those who enter to pray, go to Mass or attend a concert. Did you know that several of the windows represent academic disciplines at the College?

each window tells a story. in 1994, the library staff of

Silver lake college researched the stained glass windows

and identified the meaning of each one. issues of the

green Bay Register (the diocesan newspaper now called

the Compass) and the manitowoc Herald Times Reporter

from 1960 were consulted for information.

in this installment of “Windows to education”

we examine window #10 depicting languages. The

expressions of the windows, from top to bottom, are:

logos (the Greek word for “The Word”) on a scroll—signifying communication

The holy bible—printed and read in all languages

fiery tongues—descent of the holy Spirit, empower-ing the apostles to speak in various languages

alpha and omega—the beginning and end of the Greek alphabet

The Tower of babel—the confusion of languages

book with candle—literature (knowledge, with divine light); “in hoc Signo Vinces” (in this sign Thou shalt conquer)

right: Window #10 depicting languages—one of the beautiful and symbolic stained glass windows on the west wall of the Silver lake college chapel.
