WelcoMe to sunderlandSunderland iS a city with a difference - a modern, buSy city centre that iS Surrounded by beautiful green countrySide and attractive coaStal Scenery. in addition, faScinating hiStory, cultural and Sporting attractionS mean that Sunderland haS everything you need to live happily during your StudieS.

Sunderland’s importance as a centre of industry stretches back to medieval times but it was the 18th and 19th Centuries that saw its population grow from 15,000 to 150,000. The supply of Wearside coal and the need for ships to transport it turned Sunderland into the world’s biggest shipbuilding centre.

On the banks of the River Wear, where coal was once loaded and ships were built, you can now walk along the Riverside Sculpture Trail and see the latest exhibition of glass at the National Glass Centre.

From its earliest foundations in Anglo-Saxon times, Sunderland has grown on the banks of the River Wear. The city’s history and culture were formed by its connection to the sea and by the industry and efforts of its people.

The city’s reputation as a focus for learning and industry began in Anglo-Saxon times, when the nobleman Benedict Biscop - recently named as Sunderland’s patron saint - established a European centre of learning at the twin monastic settlement of St Peter’s and St Paul’s. It was here that the Venerable Bede wrote the first history of England, the art of glass-making was introduced to the UK, and where the renowned Saxon Bible, the Codex Amiatinus, was produced. By the year 1500, Sunderland was one of the wealthiest towns in England and to this day it is still the largest city by population between Leeds and Edinburgh.

The award winning Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is another must-see attraction in Sunderland, where the museum tells the city’s story from its early foundations to the present day accompanied by the beautiful indoor Winter Gardens, boasting over 2,000 tropical flowers and plants.

The Sunderland Wall and Silksworth Sports Complex offer climbing, skiing and snowboarding while the Marine Activities Centre, located close to the beautiful coastline, has facilities for windsurfers and kayakers. Sunderland has some spectacular coastal walks to suit all ages and energy levels. The sands of the city’s beaches at Roker and Seaburn are the perfect place for walking and jogging, or you can join the increasing numbers of surfers looking for the perfect wave.

The Stadium of Light, the football ground for Sunderland Football Club, is the pride of local people and plays in the premiership against teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Football is a big passion amongst the people of Sunderland and on match days the city is full of red and white shirts!

Every year, the Sunderland International Air Show and International Kite festival attract many tourists.

Sunderland is home to world-class companies such as Nissan, Rolls Royce, Barclays, T Mobile and EDF Energy.

The retail heart of the city is focused around The Bridges Shopping Centre, where there are over 100 top name high street stores. Independent shops and boutiques offer everything from designer labels to trendy interiors.

Eye-catching pieces of jewellery, glassware and ceramics are also a Sunderland speciality, with craft and gift shops at the museums and galleries featuring the works of up and coming designer-makers.

Nightlife is also a major part of life for young people in Sunderland, with bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes in the city centre and an underground music scene voted one of the best in the UK.

Within a 20 mile radius, you have access to some of the best heritage and cultural attractions in the UK. The historic city of Durham with its magnificent 1,000 year-old cathedral and Norman castle is just 30 minutes away by road. The cultural delights of Newcastle & Gateshead, including the new music venue, The Sage Gateshead, and Baltic The Centre For Contemporary Art, are within an easy 30 minute journey by Metro. If you wish to go further afield, London is three hours on the train and Edinburgh two hours. Newcastle International Airport is the main centre for air travel in the region, with flight connections to London Heathrow and Gatwick, Amsterdam, Paris and many other airports across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Meet our students

raVi saValiaCountry: India Course: A-levels

My two year long A-level programme at the Bede Campus of City of Sunderland College was one of the most positive experiences of my life! I was a young international student very far from home but I never felt alone because my teachers and friends were so helpful and made me feel so comfortable!

City of Sunderland College was the perfect stepping stone to my university studies. I’m now at Sunderland University in my second year of my degree in Accounting.

yi BeiliCountry: China Course: BSc (Hons) Extended in Pharmacology

Lily is a student from China who has studied English at the College, followed by an Access to Nursing Course and is now doing a Foundation programme which will allow her to progress to a degree course in Biomedical Science at the University of Sunderland. She chose to study in Sunderland since the fees at the college are amongst some of the most competitive in the UK.

“The small class sizes mean that I am able to speak to my lecturers whenever I need to. The friendliness of both staff and students has made me feel very comfortable studying here and at the same time they gave me confidence to use and improve my English.”

cHinH trun trangCountry: Vietnam Course: BTEC National Diploma in Engineering

I heard about City of Sunderland College through the Internet and decided to apply to study English as I knew I needed to improve my skills before being in a class with British students.

I have really enjoyed my time in Sunderland so far; I go to the seaside to play games on the beach or have a barbecue with my friends at the weekends. During my time at the College I have achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and I have also taken part in a charity football match to raise money for local disabled children.

My advice to any new students coming to study at the College: try to make friends with your British classmates; don’t be shy. In this way you can improve your English as well as your studies in general.

djaMila MonteiroCountry: Angola Course: IELTS

I have relatives living in the north east so it made sense to choose City of Sunderland College as they could offer me an IELTS training course and I needed an IELTS score to apply to university. After a year of studying the College’s IELTS programme, I got the score I needed to enter the BSc in Computing degree course at the University of Sunderland. Studying at the College for me was an excellent way to settle into British life and culture; I’m sure life would have been much more difficult had I gone straight from my home country (Angola) to the university. The College and the city provide a calm and peaceful environment in which to study.

aaQiB ayyuBCountry: Pakistan Course: Higher National Diploma in Computing

Aaqib has just arrived at the College from Pakistan to complete a degree in Computing. He is currently studying the first year of a two-year Higher National Diploma in Computing which will then lead on to the 3rd and final year of a BSc in Computing which he can study at a range of universities across the UK.

“Its only been a month since I arrived in this beautiful country and I have to mention that I find the people here in Sunderland very helpful and caring. My studies are great - the facilities and the course itself are up-to-date. All the staff are really helpful, particularly the staff in the International Office; whenever I need help they stop whatever they are doing to help me. For example I was looking for work and they gave me advice about my CV and about where to look for work. They also helped me find out how I could play football in college.”
