“Music is the shorthand of emotion.” Leo Tolstoy.

“Music can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable.”James Duffecy.

I love to be of service, and I love to be in service. That is what this songbook and CD areabout. After years of serving as a music director for three diVerent New Thoughtchurches, directing the music for national and regional spiritual conferences, andtraveling around the country performing, I have written and collected chants and songsfor many occasions.

My experiences have shown me how much music can contribute to the success of variousgatherings. As a musician, I joyfully accept the sacred responsibility of setting the tonefor an event. When a minister or an author speaks, I try to Wnd just the right chant or songto complement their subject and set the tone for their remarks. This holds true for allaspects of a church service or gathering. On so many occasions, I have seen how musiccan move the service along, deepen the emotional response, and act as the glue thatconnects one segment seamlessly to another.

DiVerent types of gatherings require diVerent types of music. Some events require a songor chant that is fun and lively; others, something sacred and heart opening; and stillothers, music that gets everyone singing and connected.

My main motto for chants is: KISS - Keep It Simple Sweetie! The easier the melody, rhythm, and words are, the more likely it is that anyone can sing along. No one wants to feel like they are the only ones singing, that they are the only ones whocan't remember the words, or, worst of all, that their fourth grade teacher was right, theyreally are tone deaf! Music is the great connector, and any time we lift our voices in song(no matter if the notes are perfect!), we can feel that oneness, and magic can happen.

That is why I have compiled this collection of my chants. I have included examples ofeasy-to-sing chants for various components of a church service, workshop, orgathering. These are just ideas to get you going. On the accompanying CD, I have

i

included chants with me singing the lead, (tracks 1-13) and chants, (tracks 14-26) withmy voice taken out so that you can sing the lead. I have made each one short enough(about 3 minutes) that you can sing or fade out depending on your needs. I have alsoincluded speciWc information for each chant on the CD, so that you will know what theorder is, and how it ends. Just listen to the original, and you will be able to easily sing thelead yourself.

For those of you who don’t sing in my key (my apologies to any men singing my songs!),karaoke machines are available that allow you to lower the key yourself, or you can justplay the music live and change the key on the sheet music. For those of you who playpiano or guitar, the sheet music is simple, allowing you to add any other chords ormelody that you want. Basically, I am hoping you will be inspired to make these chantsyour own by changing the key, modulating, adding new verses, or even writing your ownchant to meet the needs of your group.

Chants and songs in each of these categories are also available from many other sources. At the back of the book, I have listed the websites of some of my favorite New Thoughtartists, who can assist you in Wnding music to serve your purposes.

My hope is that this collection of chants will be of service to you and inspire andempower you to share your unique gift of music with the world.

Keep singing and playing and making music!

Karen

P.S. For those of you who might feel that these chants are only for “singers” and not foryou, let me share one of my favorite quotations, and the motto I try to live by:

“I want to sing like the birds sing not worrying who hears or what theythink.” Rumi.

So let yourself sing!

Thank You For This Dayfrom the Native American Church

Thank you for this day Spirit, thank you for this day.Thank you for this day Spirit, thank you for this day. This healing, this healing, this healing day. This healing, this healing, this healing day.

You can substitute for the words ‘this day’ with anything you want. For example: Thank you for my friends/ our life/ my job/ your health/, etc.You can also substitute for the word ‘healing’ with whatever quality would work for you:This beautiful day/ This wonderful food/ This magical trip/ This fabulous job/, etc.

Possible uses: This high energy chant is a great way to open a church service orgathering, or to use as a sing-a-long, or oVering chant.

Song notes: This is my favorite way to start any kind of gathering. This uptempo chant iseasy for everyone to sing and can create the space for people connecting in a fun way.You can substitute anything in those lines and just set the tone so well for whatever thegathering will be. I will often sing one verse a cappella and get everyone clapping along. What a wonderful way to start the day by giving thanks.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, since the beginning might be confusing as towhere to start, the back-up vocals are there at the beginning of each verse to help you.1) Healing day … 2) Healing day … 3) Healing day …4) Friends, my wonderful friends … 5) Friends, wonderful friends …6) Health, radiant health … 7) Life, glorious life … 8) Wealth, opulent wealth …9) This day, healing day … 10) ‘Thank you for this day Spirit.’ 3 times. It ends abruptly with ‘Thank you for this day!’

Blessing To The WorldWords by Reverend David Bruner

and Karen DruckerMusic by Karen Drucker

You are the heart, you are the hands, you are the voice of Spirit on earth. And who you are, and all you do, is a blessing to the world.

(Substitute ‘You are’ with ‘We are’ and ‘I am’.)

Possible uses: Sing-a-long for church, before or after a prayer, welcoming people(newcomers for church or group, children after Sunday school).

Song notes: This is a nice chant to sing after people have settled into their seats and areready to begin opening their hearts. They can sing it with their eyes shut or it can bepowerful for them to look across the room or to the person next to them and sing “Youare the heart” then for the whole group to look at each other and sing “We are the heart”and Wnally for them to close their eyes, put their hand over their own heart and really feelthemselves embody the line ‘I am the heart … I am a blessing to the world.’

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, 1) You are … 2) You are … 3) We are …4) We are … 5) I am … 6) I am … 7) I am …

I Send My LoveWords by Joyce Ripp

Music by Karen Drucker

I send my love over the mountains.I send my love over the sea.I send my love into the heavens, and it returns to me.

(Replace ‘love’ with ‘joy’, ‘power’, ‘peace’, etc.)

Possible uses: For opening and closing ceremonies, memorials, and as a groupsing-a-long.

Song notes: This chant is good with large groups when you want to incorporate bodymovements. My favorite way to use this chant is get everyone standing in a large circle.I stand in the center singing out the next quality and people do the simple movements. Onthe following pages are the movements, and I encourage you to come up with your ownfor whatever quality you choose to sing where the word ‘love’ goes. Some other ideasyou can sing: I send my prayers, my faith, my laughter, my abundance, etc.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, 1) My love … 2) My love … 3) My joy …4) My power … 5) Peace … 6) My passion … 7) My love …At the end, repeat ‘and it returns to me’ 3 times.

I Send My LoveWords by Joyce Ripp

Music by Karen Drucker

I send my loveBoth hands over your heart.

(Or whatever movements you want with the quality you use here.)

over the mountains. With both hands make a little steeple-like mountain.

I send my loveBoth hands back over your heart.

over the sea. Both hands in a hula-like movement looking like a Xowing sea.

I send my loveBoth hands over your heart.

into the heavens,Palms up, arms outstretched towards the sky, head back.

and it returns to me.Left arm down, left hand over heart, right arm down, right arm over heart.Gently rock yourself.

The Face Of God Words by Reverend Karyl Huntley

and Karen DruckerMusic by Karen Drucker

You are the face of God. I hold you in my heart. You are a part of me. You are the face of God.

(Optional verse): You are the face of love. I hold you in my heart.

You are my family. You are the face of love.

Possible uses: This chant is wonderful to sing in a group setting singing to each other andalso using the sign language. I have used it for welcoming the children back to church, honoring someone, and welcoming a newcomer to a group or church.

Song notes: Many groups like to use this chant as a way to connect with each other.I often sing through it a few times, and when people are comfortable with the words,I introduce the sign language. I will often stop the music and have people just silentlysign the words to each other. It can be a powerful exercise if you ask people tovisualize people they love, or even someone they might have a ‘challenge’ with, and imagine singing it to them.

On the following pages are the sign language to the lyrics.

Song form on the CD: 8 bar introduction, we sang this song a total of 8 times through. TheWrst time is just a solo voice, then for each verse another voice is added. The 8th time goesback to a solo voice and ends singing the last line, ‘You are the face of God.’ 3 times.

The Face Of GodWords by Reverend Karyl Huntley

and Karen DruckerMusic by Karen Drucker

The basic sign language allows us to incorporate movements while singing and gives us the opportunityto really embody this message. I feel that it is really important to let people know it is not about doing it‘right’, they can use any movements that work for them. It is really about connecting with anotherperson, or connecting with themselves, and if they are worried about doing it ‘perfectly’ they miss thepoint of the song.

The basic sign language is:

You are the face of God.Point to the person with index Wnger on ‘You’.Index Wnger circles your own face on ‘face’.Right hand goes up towards the top of your head, then bring it straight down in front of your faceending at your heart on ‘God’.

I hold you in my heart.Point to yourself with index Wnger on ‘I’.Then, as if scooping up something,

scoop up the person’s essencewith both hands outstretched and bring into your heart.

You are a part of me.On ‘You’ point with index Wnger to the person. Then on ‘part’ take your thumb and index Wngers on both hands,

make them go in a C shape and move them towards each other, locking into one intertwined embrace.

Then move both hands towards your own heart.

You are the face of God. Point to the person with index Wnger on ‘you’.Index Wnger circles your own face on ‘face’.Right hand goes up towards the top of your head. Then bring it straight down in front of your faceending at your heart on ‘God’.

I Stand Before You Words and music by Karen Drucker

and David Ault

I stand before you knowing we are one.You are the mirror of my soul.I stand before you honoringthe part of you that is whole.

Possible uses: As an opening introduction sing-a-long or dance to allow people to feelconnected.

Song notes: This chant was written by David and myself when we were facilitating aworkshop together and wanted some kind of circle dance that was easy enough foreveryone to do. Again, I feel it is important to let everyone know there is no ‘right’ wayto do this. The main intention is just for people to connect and look in each others eyes.I see so many people who feel that they can’t dance or sing, get nervous when somethinglike this is presented. I always let people know they don’t have to participate ANDwhatever they do will be Wne! They can make up their own movements if they want to,or just walk around the room and sing it to each other.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, we sang this 6 times and gave an extra barbetween each verse for people to move to their next partner. Be sure to count betweeneach section or lead the group when to start again. You can fade out the track if youwould like it to be shorter, or just put on repeat if you want to have it be longer.

Group gets in an inner and outer circle. Partners face each other. The person in the inner circle will be moving to the right to a new partner every time.

I stand before you knowing we are one. Both people put palms up, arms outstretched towards partner and sing.

God Is My SourceWords and music by Karen Drucker

God is my source,God is my power.God gives me everything I need.So I give thanks, for all my blessings.God gives me everything I need.

(Substitute ‘God’ with ‘Love’ and ‘Joy’ and ‘Peace’.)

Possible uses: This chant can be used for the oVering at church, sing-a-longs and forabundance and Wnancial freedom workshops.

Song notes: This uptempo chant works well to play as people are passing the baskets andcollecting the money for a church service. Having people write a check while singing theline ‘God gives me everything I need.’ is such an aYrmation of our continuing source ofsupply and knowing there is no lack, that our needs are met.For people not using this in a church situation you can substitute the word ‘God’ with‘love’. For example, ‘Love is my source.’ can be just as powerful.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction 1) God is … 2) God is … 3) God is … 4) Joy is …5) Peace is … 6) Love is … 7) God is … 8) God is … 9) God is … 10) God is …Ending with ‘God gives me everything I need.’ 4 times.

Welcoming ChantWords and music by Karen Drucker

We honor you.We see your grace.May you be at home in our heart.

Possible uses: Welcoming a newcomer to the group, honoring someone who has been inservice, welcoming the children, an opening chant for people to walk around the roomand sing this to each other.

Song notes: A nice idea is for everyone to stand with their palms face up towards theperson and sing this chant to them. If someone is being honored in front of the group, Isuggest you only sing it 3 or 4 times. The person can feel the honoring without feelinguncomfortable for having to be the center of attention for a long time.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, sing it a total of 7 times through. This chant isonly about 1:30 minutes long to allow for a short interlude of honoring. It ends byrepeating ‘May you be at home in our heart’ 3 times.

You are blessed.You are a blessing.You are blessed.You are a blessing.

Possible uses: Welcoming a newcomer to the group, honoring someone who has been inservice, welcoming the children, an opening chant for people to walk around the roomsinging this to each other.

Song notes: Just like the ‘Welcoming Chant’, this is another short chant that you can usefor allowing a newcomer to feel welcomed, or start your workshop with everyonewalking around and singing this to each other. You can also substitute ‘You are’ with‘We are’ and ‘I am’. It can be a very powerful exercise to have people go to diVerentpartners and say or sing to each other “I am blessed, I am a blessing” and have thepartners aYrm that for them by simply saying “You are!”

Song form on the CD: As with the welcoming chant, this is just a short chant to bless orhonor someone. We sang it a total of 4 times, ending with repeats of‘You are a blessing’ 3 times.

What Is Mine To Give?Words and music by Karen Drucker

Title by Eric O’Del

What is mine to give? What is mine to do?All I want is to sharemyself with you.

So I stand here askingwhat can I do?What is mine to give?I give it to you.

Possible uses: For the church oVering, Wnancial freedom workshops, any kind of eventwhere people are being asked to be of service.

Song notes: I wrote this chant for a church service pledge program, where thecongregation was asked how they wanted to serve in their church community. This chantcould also be made into a circle dance with each participant moving around the room andasking this question to themselves and their partner. There are so many ways to be inservice. Sometimes we just need to take the time to look in our hearts and simply ask‘What is mine to give?’

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, sing this through 7 times, then repeat‘What is mine to give, I give it to you’ 3 times.

Inspired by Reverend Mark Vierra

I am so blessed.I am so blessed.I am so grateful

for all that I have.I am so blessed.I am so blessed.I am so grateful.I am so blessed.

Possible uses: This chant works well as a sing-a-long, during the oVering, and especiallyat Thanksgiving services.

Song notes: I have learned that taking time to give thanks for all that I have has madesuch a diVerence in my life, especially in those darker times when I can’t feel it or see it.As Meister Eckart said, “If the only prayer you say in your whole life is ‘Thank You’ thatwould suYce.” People have shared with me that this chant serves as their morningmeditation. As one woman said to me, “If I can just take the time to sing this chant in themorning, the tone for my whole day is Wlled with grace and gratitude.”

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, we sang this through 7 times, building withharmonies, then going back to a solo voice on the last time, ending by repeating‘I am so grateful, I am so blessed’ 3 times.

Stand Words by Karen Drucker

and Reverend Karyl Huntley Music by Karen Drucker

Let there be peace.I am a stand for peace.Let there be love.I am a stand for love.Let there be joy.I am a stand for joy.We are making a new world now.

Possible uses: As an ending to a church service or workshop, a sing-a-long, or for anykind of event that calls people to service or at peace gatherings.

Song notes: This chant has been used in many New Thought churches as an alternative to‘The Peace Song.’ Since the words are easy, and the music can build in intensity, this canbe a great way to end a church service, or any kind of gathering.

Song form on the CD: 4 bar introduction, we sang through this 7 times with a key changeafter the 4th time. If someone is leading others in singing, it is important that you guideeveryone through the 1/2 step up. We also did an a cappella section on the 6th time soyou can get everyone clapping and singing along. At the end repeat ‘We are making anew world now.’ 3 times.

Turn Your Cell Phone OV!Words and music by Karen Drucker

Turn your cell phone oV.Just put it on vibrate. The bathrooms in the back.We guarantee there’ll be a break. There’ll be time to eat. There’ll be time to mingle. All your needs will met, but please, turn your cell phone oV! Turn it oV!Turn your cell phone oV! Turn it oV!Turn your cell phone oV! Turn it oV!Turn your cell phone oV!

Possible uses: Could be played at the beginning of any retreat, workshop, church service, oranytime, anywhere, anyplace where people have cell phones that go oV at inappropriatetimes!

Song notes: I am hoping that this short little song gets used at the beginning of any event toavoid those embarrassing and frustrating moments when, in the middle of a deep quietguided meditation, all of a sudden we all hear the cell phone going oV playing the theme to‘Gilligans Island’! So please, my plea is that you sing this song and encourage everyone toturn their cell phones oV!

Song form on the CD: This song has 4 rings from a cell phone, then a 2 bar introductionwith a break. It goes through the song once and ends with an abrupt ‘Turn your cell phoneoV!’. There is a drum break after the sound of it being turned oV. You can suggest thateveryone turn their phones oV during that short drum break.

KD’s Handy Dandy Easy Music Method

This is a very basic lesson in how to do chords. Take a look at the scales on the opposite page and use this page to make chords and transpose.

To make a major chord:Play the 1st, 3rd and 5th note of the scale (1, 3, 5).

Examples: C = C, E, G F= F, A, C B! = B!, D, F, etc.

To make a minor chord:Play the major chord (1, 3, 5), then play the 1st note, take the 3rd down a half a step,then play the 5th (1, Xat 3, 5).

Examples: Cminor = C, E!, G Fmin = F, A!, C B!min = B!, D!, F, etc.

To transpose:All you need to do is substitute the transposed chords in the key you want with the chords of theoriginal key. You Wrst need to Wgure out what key you are in. You can do that by looking at the keysignature and seeing how many sharps or Xats there are, or by having someone just help you determinewhat key the song is in. Sometimes the key might even be the Wrst and/or last chord of the song.Next you have to Wgure out what key you want to go to. Try moving the Wrst chord down a step andsee if that feels better to sing or play. Then all you do is take each of the original chords, look at the chart that I have included here, andswitch them for the transposed chords. It’s very important to remember to take all the various numbersthat might come after each chord (7ths, major, minor, any other numbers, or suspended chords).

Example #1: Original chords in the key of C: C, Am7, F, G7 Transposed chords in the key of G: G, Em7, C, D7

Example #2: Original chords in the key of A: A, C"min7, F"min7, Esus Transposed chords in the key of F: F, Am7, Dm7, Csus

The main thing that I think is important is there are no accidents. If you hit a ‘wrong’ note (one thatmight not be in the chord or in the scale) and it sounds good to you, then explore it. Many of my songshave been written by hitting a ‘wrong’ note and I just had fun with it and made up a whole new song.So in other words let yourself play and have fun and surrender to the magic of music!
