North and South byElizabeth Gaskell will bediscussed. When herfather leaves the Church ina crisis of conscience,Margaret Hale is uprootedfrom her comfortable home

in Hampshire to move with her family to thenorth of England. Initially repulsed by theugliness of her new surroundings in theindustrial town of Milton, Margaret becomesaware of the poverty and suffering of the localmill workers and develops a passionate senseof social justice. This is intensified by hertempestuous relationship with the mill-ownerand self-made man, John Thornton, as theirfierce opposition over his treatment of hisemployees masks a deeper attraction.
