CallPilot MPB96 and MGate Updates – New MGate RJ-45 to Amphenol Adapter

REVISION HISTORY

Date Revision # Summary of Changes

06 August 2008 Original bulletin This is the original publication

19 November 2008 Rev. 1 Updated to improve clarity regarding packaging, compatibility, and supplemental switch components required in certain configurations.

24 November 2008 Rev. 2 Updated to correct adapter part number from NTDU0606E6 to NTDU0609E6.

Overview of Product Benefits/Values The newer versions of the MPB96 board and MGate card, with adaptation of standard customer-provided Category 5E (CAT-5E) cabling, provide the following enhanced customer and channel partner values:

• Extended distances between CallPilot and CS 1000/M1 (600m versus 20m) o The original DS30x cable (NTRH2014E6) that connected the MPB96 board to

the MGate card was limited to 60 ft (20m). Replaced by standard CAT-5E cabling, this extends distances up to 1,968 ft (600m).

• Faster and simpler, installation and maintenance o Standard CAT-5E cable allows cabling to be run to exact length required,

reducing equipment room cable clutter. o Independent links enable focused, less obtrusive maintenance be performed. o Diagnostic LEDs improve supportability.

• Reduced cable costs and improved availability o CAT-5E cabling is less expensive than the Nortel proprietary cable. o CAT-5E cabling is readily available from electronics and computer retailers.

• Independent clocking for improved channel robustness o With the new CAT-5E MPB96/MGate versions, each MGate card provides an

independent clock resource, removing the dependence on a primary MGate for all other MGate link clocking. In the event of a link failure, no impact to other links (or their traffic handling capacities) will result.

o CAT-5E MGate cards, with their independent clocking, are not required to be within the same equipment shelf in the PBX.

Multiple CS 1000E media gateways require they be interconnected with a supplemental DECT clocking cable, NTDW67AAE6 Cable, CS1000 MGC Reference Cable [RoHS]. Reference product bulletin P-2008-0178-Global CS 1000 Media Gateway Clock Synchronization for additional details.

• Improved power/ground resilience o The new CAT-5E MPB96/MGate solution enhances CallPilot’s resilience to

power/ground fluctuations and resulting system impact caused by power surges often seen with severe weather (lightning strikes).

Cabling Specification The legacy DS30x cable (NTRH2014E6) that connects between the CS 1000 or M1 and the CallPilot server has now been replaced by standard CAT-5E connectivity. The NTRH2014E6 DS30x cable was provided by Nortel with each MPB96 board while the new standard CAT-5E cable is to be supplied by the customer or channel partner. The NTRH2014E6 cable is no longer provided by Nortel for new or migration 600r and 1005r orders. The new CAT-5E cable connection must be end-to-end, non-routable (signaling only) with a maximum cable distance of 600 meters (1968.4 feet).

• A maximum of two (2) Female-to-Female couplers should be used. • Bridge points and punch downs will result in signal loss and are therefore not

supported in any configuration.

Configuring STI Links for the CallPilot 600r and 1005r Servers CallPilot Manager’s Configuration Wizard is used to configure the switch telephony interface (STI) links and the DS0 channels between the MGate cards in the switch and the new MPB96 boards in the CallPilot server. Each MPB96 board can have three (3) STI links. There is a one to one (1:1) association between the DS30 ports on the back of the MPB96 board and the STI link in CallPilot Manager – meaning channels configured in STI Link 001 must be plugged into port one of the MPB96 board. CallPilot 1005r For the CallPilot 1005r server the DS30 ports are numbered from right to left and then from top to bottom as illustrated below.

STI Links 1, 2, 3

Status/Diagnostic LED Indicators

LED Warning Reason Yellow LED on the RJ-45 of both the MPB96 and MGATE ends of the cable

• Cable is not seated fully into the RJ-45 connection at one end of the other

• Wrong cable

No LED (Green or Yellow) lit on the MGate faceplate

• NTRH2014E6 plugged onto the backplane Amphenol connector for the MGate – MGate is configured for legacy compatibility mode

1. Signaling detection makes it necessary to have good, tight connections for any,

and all I/O panel connections including filters and amphenol.

MGate faceplate RJ-45 interaction with new adapter Once the N0193176 RJ-45 to Amphenol adapter is connected, the corresponding 50-pin connector within the switch takes “control” and the MGate front-faceplate R-45 connector will be automatically disabled. This safeguard prevents craftsperson from incorrectly attempting to use both connectors, eliminating installation errors.

CS 1000E noise/static on CallPilot channels

A potential CallPilot voice/fax channel static condition exists when installing CAT-5E MGate cards (NTRB18DAE5) in a CS 1000E Media Gateway expansion cabinet to a legacy MPB96 (NTRH40AAE5, non CAT-5E) board. If this condition occurs, any of the following workarounds may be applied independently to resolve the issue. Apply the one most suitable to the customer environment:

1) Move all MGate cards from expansion cabinets to the main cabinet. 2) Upgrade the Media Gateway firmware from version AA13 to FA14. This update can

be downloaded from the Enterprise Solutions PEP Library (ESPL) at www.nortel.com/espl under “Serviceability Updates and Loadware/Firmware Distribution Tools” using File ID “MGCFAA14”.

3) Replace CAT-5E MGate cards (NTRB18DAE5) with legacy MGate cards (NTRB18CAE5). 4) Upgrade the MPB96/MGate components to a CAT-5E configuration.
