PUT ON YOUR SNEAKERS AND JOIN THE FIGHT TO END ALZHEIMER’S by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on November 7th!

All Santa Barbara County residents are invited to participate, though this year, due to COVID-19, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s will not be hosting a large gathering. To safeguard the health and safety of walkers and volunteers, entrants will walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks, and trails.

“The pandemic is changing how we walk, but it doesn’t change the need to walk,” shared Lindsey Leonard, executive director of the California Central Coast Chapter. “Our mission to support those affected by Alzheimer's and other dementia has become even more critical during COVID-19. The majority of people we help are immunocompromised, which puts them at greater risk. We've witnessed increased difficulties of caregivers being isolated at home or separated from their loved ones that live in care facilities.”

The Association's mission is to accelerate global research, drive risk reduction and early detection, and maximize quality care and support. Along the Central Coast, nearly 3,000 local families participate in virtual support groups and education classes.

While all Walk participants share the same vision for a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, many also have a personal connection to the disease and are walking in honor of a loved one.

Gene Lucas, former executive vice chancellor of UCSB, is walking in honor of Susan, his wife of over 40 years. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Gene has not been able to visit Susan at Villa Alamar for nearly nine months. Despite this challenge, he is dedicated to the Walk and is encouraging others to join him in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.

Leigh Cashman is walking in honor of her father and other loved ones who have passed away from Alzheimer’s. As an Alzheimer’s Advocate

and member of Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative (AWI), Leigh is passionate about making positive changes for increased support and research towards a cure. “I think we all have that passion to find a cure when we are hit hard with the disease,” Leigh said. “The Walk is a great opportunity to keep everyone engaged in this fight; it doesn’t end because of other things going on and we are here to make a difference.”

Team AWI, led by Committee Chair and Board Director, Katina Zaninovich, is a top fundraiser for this year’s Walk. The group of 20 women have previously involved the community in their mission to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association through annual luncheons that feature research presentations and keynote speakers.

This year’s Santa Barbara Walk To End Alzheimer’s Committee, comprised of Pam Bigelow, Mary Jo Swalley, Kathy Carrigan, and Michelle Gillian, have been working hard through outreach and planning to ensure the success of this year’s event as a powerful and moving experience.

On Walk day, walkers will be able to view a virtual Opening Ceremony hosted by Andrew Firestone. After walking, participants are invited to safely experience the view-only Promise Flower Garden located at the Santa Barbara Mission, honoring the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

The Walk to End Alzehimer’s is sponsored by National Presenting Sponsors, Edward Jones and CVS. Locally, the Walk is proud to have Central Coast Home Health and Hospice as their Elite Sponsor. Premier Sponsors include Union Bank and Cottage Health Systems. Select Sponsors include Straus Family Foundation, Casa Dorinda, Arlington Financial, Mosher Foundation, Covenant Living, and Samarkand/Covenant Living. Media sponsors include La M 103.7 and Cumulus Media.

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Get involved in the fight to End Alzheimer’s today. CALIFORNIA’S CENTRAL COAST IS CELEBRATED for its beaches, sunshine, wine — and now, its budding coffee industry. For the past

three years, Goleta-based Good Land Organics farm has been the headquarters for Frinj Coffee, Inc. Consisting of 67 farms ranging from the Gaviota Coast to San Diego, Frinj Coffee is making California the latest coffee hotspot, growing avocados and coffee together to produce more crops for the same amount of space and water.

“I didn’t wake up and say ‘oh, I gotta grow coffee,’ I wasn’t clairvoyant like that,” shared Jay Ruskey, founder and owner of Good Land Organics and Frinj Coffee, Inc. “It’s kind of just an evolution where coffee’s kind of been calling me; I keep making these milestones and I realize what the importance of coffee for the consumer is, and I realize what we’re doing here can actually have a pretty good impact on farmers that have generally been farming to break even or with low margins.”

Originally from Los Angeles, Ruskey’s home has been Goleta since founding Good Land Organics in 1992. Today, this farm boasts twelve acres of fruit production, including 400 caviar

lime trees, several hundred avocado trees, and a couple hundred of both passion fruit and dragon fruit plants.

Intermingled between all of this, 4,000 coffee trees grow. Having been introduced to coffee growing by his mentor Dr. Mark Gaskell from UC Davis, Ruskey planted his first coffee trees in 2002. In 2017, this personal passion developed into Frinj Coffee, Inc., as Ruskey worked to support other Californian farmers to diversify

their crops through coffee. A California farmer

does not necessarily need to portion out special land for coffee trees. Rather, Ruskey believes in using a “layered agricultural system.” At Good Land Organics, this system consists of Ruskey and his team planting avocado trees with their usual spacing, but then growing coffee trees beneath and between them. Then, they fill in remaining spaces with dragon fruit and passion fruit. By utilizing this layered system, the trees and plants are able to offer protection to each

other during long and dry wind spells, as well as increase the water holding capacity of the soil. Ultimately, this allows Ruskey and his team to grow more produce without increasing land space or water usage.

“The goal is kind of three-dimensional

growing,” said Ruskey. “We’re growing up, down, sideways, trying to maximize our space.”

Recent coffee market trends further support California farmers getting involved with the coffee industry. Ruskey explained that we’re witnessing a “third wave movement” of the coffee industry, where people are caring more where their coffee is coming from.

“What we have now is a demand like fine wine, that people are saying, ‘well if you take really good care of your coffee, it tastes like nothing we’ve had before, and we’re willing to pay for that experience like we would with a fine wine,’” Ruskey explained.

Farmers within the Frinj network receive 60 percent of the return from growing and selling their coffee to Frinj Coffee, Inc. This is a dramatic difference from average produce supply chains, where farmers usually experience between a two to five percent return, according to Frinj. This is due to their implementing what Ruskey calls “a farmer first program.”

“If you really look at all the work and the efforts for this type of food, you take a coffee plant, it takes literally four years for a farmer to get paid for something he’s invested in,” said

Ruskey. “I think we just need to recognize that, and that this is one way we can do it.”

Currently, the Frinj Coffee network is looking to include even more California farmers. Interested farmers can join by filling out a form on the Frinj Coffee website. To qualify, farmers must demonstrate that their land can meet the specific needs of growing coffee trees. After assessing the benefits and risks of starting their own coffee crop, farmers visit Good Land Organics to learn about Ruskey’s methods. Once a farmer joins the Frinj Coffee network, Ruskey and his team continue to support them through offering advice, processing, and selling their harvests. To learn more or purchase coffee from Frinj Coffee, Inc., visit www.Frinjcoffee.com. More information about Good Land Organics can be found at www.goodlandorganics.com.

The goal is kind of three-dimensional growing. We’re growing up, down, sideways, trying to maximize our space. – Jay Ruskey

By Rev. Kristen Rohm

THESE ARE INTERESTING TIMES. For many of us, the life we were all living in early March has changed so much we could say it’s gone. What we’re moving toward and when we might get there is unclear. We are caught between what was and what is yet to come. In spiritual work, we know this as liminal time, a threshold of sorts between the old and the new.

Liminal times bring several things, one is tremendous uncertainty. Th at’s not fun or easy. It’s made harder because we don’t know how long we’ll be here, so it can feel like we’re stuck in between. I have been helped to not feel as stuck, overwhelmed, or powerless by recognizing this time as liminal - because threshold times also hold possibility and a certain power for change. It’s like when you stand in a doorway, having left one space but not yet stepped into the new one. Th ere is a sense of possibility about what might be found in this next room.

So as we all live here in between our old life and whatever is next, let us support ourselves and each other as we look for possibilities and meaning. It’s important to fi rst acknowledge that this liminal time is stressful. We

have very deep health, economic, systemic racism, and political concerns. Th e future is unknown and our brains prefer predictability. So if you’ve felt anxiety, disconnection, grief, loneliness, boredom, sadness, anger, weariness, or fear of the future these last months, you are not alone.

At Hospice of Santa Barbara, we accompany folks with life threatening illness, which is also a liminal

time of uncertainty. We know that it can help to notice and name what we are experiencing. So be honest with yourself and with others about how you are feeling and coping. Talk about it with a trusted person. And breathe. Slow deep breaths settle the nervous system and bring us into the present moment where we are safe rather than being caught up in fearful thoughts about the future. Breathing in, pause, breathing out.

It also helps to look for meaning and to prioritize what matters most to us. One way to fi nd meaning is to ask ourselves, “What has surprised me in a good way during these months?” What has been unexpectedly fun, calming, or connecting? It could be as simple as driving less or enjoying the beauty of nature, getting outside to garden, walk, and appreciate the peace and the abundance of wildlife. And maybe there is something else, unique to your experience.

I have had the unexpected surprise of getting to do yoga again with my favorite Cleveland yoga teacher. I lived there for fi ve years and took her class every week, so I’ve missed her and was thrilled to fi nd her class online now because of COVID-19! It’s been so comforting; my brain loves the return of this predictable routine. More importantly, this good surprise has shown me that staying connected with those I love who live far away is important. It matters to me, so I’ve been reaching out to other dear ones I let fall through the cracks of my old busy life. Th is is one way I have found meaning in these in between times that I intend to take with me and prioritize in the new life that is on its way. How about you?

We encourage everyone to breathe, to notice and name whatever you are feeling and to explore what is meaningful in the uncertainty of this liminal time. May we all explore possibility and fi nd meaning here on the threshold. Reach out to us at www. hospiceofsb.org for information and support.

Finding Meaning During In-between TimesPor Rev. Kristen Rohm

Ribbon Cutting Marks MB&T Branch Opening

FULL SERVICE BANKING has expanded on the Mesa with the opening of Montecito Bank & Trusts newest branch, located at 2034 Cliff Drive.

“We have such deep roots in Santa Barbara that we already felt like the Mesa was a part of our MB&T family, and now it truly is. We recognized that Mesa businesses and residents have experienced significant changes in the banking options available to them over the past several years, and we felt it was important to bring community banking back to this unique and charming neighborhood,” shared Janet Garufis, Montecito Bank & Trust Chairman and CEO. “Even as we expand our digital banking options to provide world class online and mobile banking experiences, we are committed to our branch banking locations that are at the center of the highly personalized customer service that has become synonymous with MB&T.”

The newly constructed branch features a fresh and innovative design that was inspired by the influences of the Mesa itself. The open design creates a bright and friendly environment, punctuated by a state of the art 162 square foot TV wall featuring local imagery, client stories, and community happenings.

MB&T President and COO, George Leis commissioned local artist Bobbi Bennett to create a custom piece that captures the Mesa community and lifestyle. The result, a vibrant nine foot original Reynolds “Renny” Yater surfboard showcasing Bennett’s exclusive photography of Mesa Beach, adorns one wall and welcomes guests to the branch. In addition to the attentive branch team, clients have access by appointment to locally based commercial lending and business banking relationship managers and knowledgeable MB&T Advisors and mortgage specialists. When the community is able to resume in person gatherings, the 2,600 square foot branch includes a 180 square foot Community Room, which will be available for nonprofit/community use.

While guests are invited to begin using the branch for banking needs, a traditional grand opening event will not happen at this time, in effort to adhere to current social distancing guidelines. A limited number of people are allowed in the branch at one time and masks are required for all associates and clients standing in line and inside the branch itself. Montecito Bank & Trust is the oldest and largest locally owned community bank in the Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. montecito.bank

La Cumbre Plaza Opens Seda Custom Skincare Products Store

AS OF OCTOBER 15TH, there is yet another reason to shop at La Cumbre Plaza. Following the recent opening of Bristol Farms, Seda Custom Skincare Products joins the stores offered along the Plaza’s welcoming walkways. With a second location currently operating out of Montecito, Seda

Custom Skincare Products works to meet the skincare needs of individuals from all walks of life.

“It continues to amaze me that today most skin care products are still mass produced and do not meet an individual’s true needs,” said Seda Sakaci Celik. “My experience in skin care science and cosmetology have taught me that each person has a unique skin profile with very specific needs and characteristics.”

The Seda Custom Skincare Products location offers customers the chance to undergo a SkincareID Skin Analysis session, which reviews an individual’s skin for traits such as moisture, pH, elasticity, and sebum levels. Through these sessions, Seda Custom Skincare is able to then determine what skin care products the individual would most benefit from.

The La Cumbre Plaza Seda Custom Skincare Products is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10am to 6pm. SkincareID Skin Analysis sessions last approximately 50 minutes, so it is advised that individuals who want a session schedule ahead with the location.

Currently, La Cumbre Plaza is open and operating under COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. For more information about the Plaza and its other stores, visit www.shoplacumbre.com. To learn more about Seda Custom Skincare Products, visit http://sedacustomskincare.com.

Respect. Perseverance. Compassion.Even in the midst of these unique and uncertain times, Bishop Diego High School continues to grow and thrive. The many efforts to upgrade our technology infrastructure gave us the foundation we needed to maintain high academic standards and achievement. We are now truly on the cutting edge of high schools offering in-person, remote and distance learning.

A Bishop education forms young men and women not just into excellent students but into people of character, as they are taught to lead lives guided by the Christian principles of Respect, Perseverance, and Compassion. The spiritual and emotional health of our students is our highest priority, and we have continued to find creative ways to reimagine spiritual and extracurricular activities with social distancing measures in place. Despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, it is still a great day to be a Cardinal!

By Sigrid Toye, Special to VOICE

STARTING OFF THIS WEEK’S COLUMN, I’m going to do a little (not so shameless) bragging about a creative event now underway at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Well, maybe the brag is just a tad shameless as I bask vicariously in the talents of the museum’s

Curator and Director of Collections and Exhibits, Emily Falke. Not only does Falke curate, design, and mount the current exhibitions, art shows, and the museum’s collections, she has other talents that extend locally, as well as nationally.

A triumphant (and well known) winner of multiple cooking contests – the latest win being the National Lentil Festival Cook-off Grand Prize recipe for her Lentil & Quinoa Sliders with Blackberry Barbecue Sauce, a present competitor in America’s Best Family Recipe Contest Festival

with her Mussels Pancetta Fennel Herbs and Citrus, and of course the California Strawberry Festival’s Grand Prize winner, along with other cooking contests to numerous to mention – this is a gal with talent! And it’s this talent Falke is bringing to the Maritime Museum by spearheading this week’s ongoing event, the First Annual Sustainable Seafood Recipe Contest.

“Can you tell,” laughed Falke, “that I love to cook? It’s so creative and one of my passions … can’t wait to discover the super recipes that come our way from our local talented cooks.”

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is hosting this competition to support its neighbors in the harbor, along with international efforts to promote responsible fishing. The Santa

Barbara Channel harbors an owner-operated fishing fleet that responds to the seasonal availability of seafood. Local fishing encourages less waste and more accountability in sustainable fishing practices. The Sustainable Seafood Recipe Contest has been extended to Saturday, October 24th to allow more people a chance to enter. In partnership with Pacific Premier Bank and supported by the Commercial Fishermen of

Santa Barbara, the museum is sponsoring this unusual contest, open to families, couples, and individuals 14 years or older. Contestants may submit recipes online at https://sbmm.org/sbmm-sustainable-seafood-contest

Another event of note will take place on Thursday evening, October 22nd at 7pm, when the Maritime Museum will host the Santa Barbara and Central Coast premiere screening of Inna Blokhina’s award-winning documentary film, SHE IS THE OCEAN. The film follows nine women from across the globe and across all ages, who share a deep and profound love of the sea. In making this unique documentary, Blokhina selected these women, ranging from the ages of twelve to 83, to create a portrait of a woman’s ocean life through an entire lifetime. A panel discussion moderated by Executive Director Greg Gorga, will follow with the director and special guests, including Holly Lohuis, a marine biologist who works with Jean-Michel Cousteau, Cinta Hansel, and her father underground surfer hero Bruce Hansel. Gorga notes, “We’re excited to host this special film, highlighting the love and special connection these amazing women have with the ocean.”

Hope to encourage you to submit a seafood recipe to the Sustainable Seafood Recipe Contest - it does sound like fun! Again, all the information needed is on the Maritime Museum’s website listed above. Let’s hope that things here in Santa Barbara continue to loosen up so that we may enjoy more of

the activities we’ve sorely missed over the last few months. Stay tuned...C

BOOMING REALTORS’ EXISTING-HOME SALES are showing there is a very severe housing shortage with record sales and a record low housing inventory. Santa Barbara REALTOR Jim Witmer said the demand for Santa Barbara homes is huge and inventory is being held back by seller’s concerns about the virus. Buyers are making decisions based on

spending more time at home, with work space and more amenities. “This trend continues as more people relocate to the safety and lifestyle offered by Santa

Barbara. This should continue to drive our values up. The supply is limited and it is a good time to be a seller,” Witmer noted.

Inventory levels are at record lows, with just 228 homes listed for sale in the MLS in September, down 22 percent from January.

The NAR reports that housing affordability declined in August compared to a year ago, despite median incomes rising. However, the jump in home prices—up 11.7 percent—was way above family income increases of 2.2 percent, since August 2019.

“Home sales continue to amaze, and there are plenty of buyers in the pipeline ready to enter the market,” said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist. “Further gains in sales are likely for the remainder of the year, with mortgage rates hovering around three percent and with continued job recovery.”

Total housing inventory at the end of August totaled 1.49 million units, down 0.7 percent from July

and down 18.6 percent from one year ago (1.83 million). Unsold inventory sits at a 3.0-month supply at the current sales pace, down from 3.1 months in July and down from the 4.0-month figure recorded in August 2019.

Scarce inventory has been problematic for the past few years, according to Yun, an issue he says has worsened in the past month due to the dramatic surge in lumber prices and the dearth of lumber resulting from California wildfires.

Mortgage rates are helping to offset some of those high home prices, however. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to three percent in August and has averaged below three percent in the past few weeks, the lowest on record.

The NAR also reports pending home sales for contracts closing in the same two months are also surging, which will boost sales through the end of the year. Pending home sales in August continued to move upward, marking four uninterrupted months of positive contract activity. Each of the four major regions experienced growth in month-over-month and year-over-year pending home sales transactions.

The Pending Home Sales Index, www.nar.realtor/pending-home-sales, a forward-looking indicator of home sales based on contract signings, rose 8.8 percent to 132.8 – a record high – in August. Year-over-year, contract signings rose 24.2 percent.

The sale pendings reported by Santa Barbara MLS are again much higher than the previous year (50 percent), so we can expect October to also be a big month for sales, said Witmer.

Booming Home Sales Create Housing Shortage

Reply to opinion piece on Prop. 15Dear Editor,

Thank you for distributing your paper free to all of us. I enjoy reading it and appreciate the intelligent, useful material you provide, especially the work of Harlan Green. Given that, I am surprised you would publish an opinion piece full of speculation and presumption by Brian Johnson, a spokesperson for the local REALTOR’s association.

He shows his obvious bias here as well as his disguised attempt to protect his employer at Radius and the real estate community. A few examples:

1. He says not all of the revenue will go to cities and schools. There are always administrative costs when a law is changed but where is the evidence that it will go elsewhere?

2. He says the proposition targets minority and urban property owners. Where in the legislation are they targeted? It is true that owners of large businesses and corporations will now be asked to pay their fair share. If he thinks they are currently paying their fair share then why doesn’t he say so? That is the real question voters need to decide in their vote about this proposition. My sense is that very few minority businesses own the real estate; they rent, so will they really be directly impacted? Only if the landholders decide to pass these costs onto the minority businesses that he now seems so concerned about. Where were the REALTORS and his employer when the pandemic hit and many small businesses, including those owned by minorities were so hard hit? Did they contribute to the funds that were established to try and help these innocent but now unemployed workers?

3. Where is his evidence that if Prop. 15 passes that local cities and counties will be more interested in approving commercial over residential development. Surely he knows about zoning laws and that cities and counties recognize the housing crisis we are in and especially the need for low income housing to solve our homeless problem.

4. Lastly, where is his evidence that Prop. 15 proponents want to roll back Prop. 13 and where is his evidence that “leaders from both sides of the political spectrum are lining up against this? I would invite him to name five prominent Democrats in our state who oppose this proposition? – Gary Linker, Ph.D., Santa Barbara

Penny Little and Carrie Topliffe Release New Song, “Raise Your Voice Up”

WITH ELECTION DAY MERE WEEKS AWAY, local singer-songwriter Penny Little

and lyricist Carrie Topliff e have released a new song to encourage listeners to vote. Titled Raise Your Voice Up, the song’s lyrics share the importance of voting through a lively, contemporary pop sound with gospel infl uences.

“No one disputes the importance of this election,” said Topliff e. “We need to participate in democracy if we want it to stay strong. I want to encourage everyone’s voice to be heard, so I wrote the lyrics to be non-partisan and inclusive.”

Th e featured singer for Raise Your Voice Up is Kenneith Perrin, a recording and touring artist who has opened for Dale Bozzio and Missing Persons in the past. Back-up vocals were provided by Wendy Sims-Moten and Alison Zuber, and Gary Yoshimura played guitar. Th e song was also included in the recently released album Runnin’ in the Rain, by Little’s collaborative musical and media project, Th e Away Team.

Both Little and Topliff e have utilized their musical talents to respond to current events in the past, having produced the songs Get Out and Vote and Say His Name together. Th e matter of voting is especially something Little feels strongly about. In addition to her career as a producer and recording artist, Little is also a documentary fi lmmaker, and produced the fi lm Electile Dysfunction which reviewed issues with electronic voting machines in the 2004 election. She shared that she feels Raise Your Voice Up is the ideal soundtrack for Americans as they vote this fall.To listen to Raise Your Voice Up on Apple Music, visit https://music.apple.com/us/album/raise-your-voice-up-single/1526908005. OFFERS HUGE THANKS

Donna & Patrick Will

Voices Translation and Interpreting Services

to the many sponsors, donors, volunteers, and guests who helped raise over $150,000 for Change, Not CharityTM at our 27th annual Community Celebration.

THIS HALLOWEEN SEASON, do the Monster Mash for a good cause by partaking in World Dance for Humanity’s fi rst virtual dance fest! With online preparation classes currently ongoing, the dance fest will consist of a Michael Jackson Th riller dance on October

24th, and a costume dance party on Halloween itself. All donated funds will support the WD4H Rwanda Education Fund, though there is no minimum donation requirement to partake in the fun.

“Th is year marks the 10th anniversary World Dance for Humanity is hosting the THRILLS & CHILLS Halloween event,” said WD4H Executive Director Janet Reineck. “It’s a much loved community tradition that normally attracts hundreds of dancers who perform around town, culminating with the grand fi nale performance of Th riller in the Sunken Garden at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. While the pandemic and current County public health regulations don’t permit large local in-person social gatherings, curtailing our usual ‘fl ash mobs’ and main performance, we found a virtual workaround. It actually works to our benefi t, off ering us

a way to reach thousands of new ‘spook-tacular’ online fans around the world. Th is enables WD4H to share our mission which is changing lives... one step at a time.”

WD4H is hosting free daily Zoom classes at 10am in preparation for the dance fest. Participants in these online sessions learn steps to Halloween music like Monster Mash, Ghostbusters, and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. Special classes highlighting Th riller dance moves will take place on October 17th and 24th at 10am, and on the 21st at 6pm.

WD4H is also compiling a video of individuals across the world dancing at home in preparation for the Halloween festivities. Th e organization asks that all who want to contribute to this international eff ort submit their home dance videos no later than October 25th.

In the past, participants in the WD4H THRILLS & CHILLS event were asked to make a minimum $40 donation. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, donations from participants are optional. Funds raised from these voluntary donations will support the WD4H Education Fund, which works toward supporting 320 Rwandan students’ access to education in 2021. To learn more about World Dance for Humanity, donate, or register to partake in the 2020 THRILLS & CHILLS event, visit http://worlddanceforhumanity.org.

The project was also featured on Brussels television!

ORIGINALLY FROM WYOMING, “a state with wonderful biodiversity, landscapes, and very few people,” Chris Jenkins’s early adoration of nature only intensified when his family moved

for a time to Africa.“Some of the fondest memories from my

childhood are of remote places with wild animals,” he said.

Fitting, then, that Jenkins turned his passion into a career as a documentary filmmaker. His favorite subject — nature. Also the head of production in UC Santa Barbara’s film and media studies department, his courses include GreenScreen, a competitive and popular offering in environmental media production.

“The class has an amazing track record of producing festival-worthy films,” Jenkins said of GreenScreen,

for which he annually selects only 16 students — and greenlights four films for production.

Among the recent crop is 10 Miles Out, a documentary ode to backpacking in the Los Padres National Forest, conceived and directed by alumnus Preston Maag. The film will screen as part of the NatureTrack Film Festival — running online through Sunday,

October 18th — after

being postponed from March due to the pandemic.

“Being recognized for your work is always an honor, so I’m very grateful that our film

was selected for NatureTrack,” Maag said. “When I was part of the GreenScreen class, NatureTrack was one of the festivals I wrote down as a goal for submissions, so to see it come to fruition is special.”

Based on a belief that a deeper understanding of, and connection to, the natural world enriches our lives, 10 Miles Out is an immersive journey into the captivating

world of backpacking. Maag’s documentary follows the adventures

of backpackers of various skill and experience levels — from amateurs to aficionados — as they navigate the Los Padres National Forest from Ventura to Monterey. Bonded by their love of nature, the backpackers reveal the reward of the journey can be over the destination.

Maag was inspired to make the movie after catching the backpacking bug shortly before he was selected for GreenScreen.

“My friend took me on a brief overnight trip into the Los Padres National Forest just above Santa Barbara and I was immediately hooked,” he recalled. “Coming from a camping background where my supplies came from the bed of my car, backpacking kept all the gear on my back. As an avid hiker, this gave me the option of hiking to beautiful places and rather than hiking back, being able to setup camp where nobody else was. After that first trip, I felt inclined to share my experience with people in the form of a film.”

There couldn’t be a much more perfect landing spot for Maag’s first festival than NatureTrack, according to Jenkins,

an active partner in the event for several years.“I have a keen interest in nature, wildlife, and the

outdoors, so it’s been wonderful to collaborate with the NatureTrack Film Festival that is dedicated to these kinds of stories,” he said. “I am really proud of Preston and I believe his crew had a fantastic time as they put their film together. The founders of NatureTrack have been so incredibly supportive of our students, and I really look forward to continuing to build this relationship.

“Film festivals are the ideal place for filmmakers to connect with like-minded individuals,” Jenkins continued. “Many of the films that I’ve worked on came from connections that started at film festivals. I always encourage students to submit to festivals and do their homework regarding the other films in the festival so they can meet other filmmakers, make connections, and grow their possibilities.” Printed with permission of UCSB Office of

SUBVERSIVE FILMS HAVE BEEN A FEATURE OF CINEMA since the Lumiere brothers amazed audiences in the late 19th century. Today, in an age of upheaval that has so many of us on edge, we

need films that tweak our social and political norms. Now, just in time, UC Santa Barbara’s Carsey-Wolf

Center (CWC) is presenting its “Subversives” discussion series featuring five films spanning 70 years and three countries. Beginning with Sorry to Bother You and its satire of American capitalism and white corporate culture, the series invites people to view the films on their own and then join a moderated conversation about them.

The discussion of Sorry to Bother You took place on October 13th. Director Boots Riley talked about the film with Miguel Penabella, a Ph.D. candidate in UCSB’s

Department of Film and Media Studies. Penabella, who conceived the “Subversives” series

during a yearlong practicum with CWC director Patrice Petro and associate director Emily Zinn, said he was interested in films that would highlight politically and ideologically subversive films such as Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator of 1940, which lampooned Adolf Hitler.

“The decision to screen that film was to reflect on the effectiveness and legacy of using comedy to critique fascism, which is a debate that continues today across many works throughout different political contexts,” he

said. “I also wanted to imagine a broader, expansive idea of ‘Subversives’ as well, including films that may be aesthetically or commercially subversive or works that may have generated a cult following, which is why we chose selections from Pee-wee’s Playhouse, itself groundbreaking for how it blends live action, puppetry, stop-motion animation, and claymation.”

In Sorry to Bother You, Penabella said he was drawn to Riley’s outsider status as a filmmaker. The film, Riley’s first — his entertainment experience is in hip-hop — is what he called a “a fun and funky satirical comedy” about a Black telemarketer who ascends the corporate ladder by performing “white voice.”

“Rarely do we see commercially released films with big name actors sympathize with labor struggles and display any kind of class consciousness (though some might remember Sally Field’s titular character fighting for union rights in Norma Rae),” he said, “and I found‘Sorry to Bother You ideologically subversive for bringing those themes to wider cinemagoing audiences.”

Following the main discussion between moderator and guest, there will be time for a few questions from the audience. Those questions will be selected by the CWC staff from the Q&A function on Zoom. Audience members can also use the chat function in Zoom to interact with one another during the event.

Upcoming film discussions in the series are:• The Great Dictator, Thursday, October 22nd, 4 to 5pm, with

Art Matters

Artists Grabbing Our AttentionBy Edward Goldman, ART Matters

THE MOMENT I OPENED THE PACKAGE which came from the Sam Francis Foundation, I was charmed and even a little bit seduced by the design of its new publication, The Space of Effusion: Sam Francis in Japan by Richard Speer. Ashamed to admit, until I opened this book, I was unaware of Sam Francis’s (1923-1994) time spent in Japan where he traveled first in 1957.

Following his first visit, Francis “established studios and residences there (in Japan) and became active in a circle of avant-garde artists, writers, filmmakers, architects, and composers.”

Now that we are deprived of the pleasure of going to museums to experience art first-hand, I found myself enjoying the silky texture of the book cover and its equally silky at-touch pages inside. Going through the multiple reproductions and photos, gave me a sensation that I’m traveling along with Francis to Japan. Lucky for us Angelenos, we are going to have a unique experience of seeing major works by Sam Francis influenced by his experience and time spent in Japan. In its recent announcement, LACMA informs us about its upcoming exhibition (2021) of Sam Francis’s art influenced by his extensive time

spent in Japan in the 1960’s and 70’s.Another discovery, this time not in

my mailbox, but in my email inbox, was a heartbreaking story about a Jewish artist, Gertrud Kauders (1883-1942), who in fear of her art being destroyed by Nazis, hid her paintings and drawings behind the walls of her friend’s home in Prague. Now, nearly 80 years later, during the demolition of this house, hundreds of Gertrud Kauder’s beautiful paintings and sketches were discovered hidden behind the walls and under the floorboards.

Take a look at some of these paintings with their wonderfully, energetic brushstrokes. They are informal portraits, mostly done in just one sitting, fully capturing the character of the person. Most of the Kauders’ family fled the country in fear of Nazi invasion and urged her to do the

same, but she chose to stay. After being identified as Jewish, she was transported in May 1942 to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. As a rare exception, this tragic story, has an unexpected, positive development. 80 years after Kauders’ death, her art and her spirit are back to life, to inform, and yes, to inspire us.

Now back to California. 18th Street Art Center in Santa Monica is ready to open next week a solo exhibition by LA artist, Patty Chang. Her multi-part video project, Milk Debt consists of “videos of lactating women pumping their breast milk as they recite lists of fears drawn from multiple communities across different geographical regions.” I would assume that some people might find the image of a woman pumping her breasts to be unsettling. But that is exactly what makes me want to go, to see and to be challenged by this film featuring nine performers helping “make visible the hidden fears we share in this dark time.”

With October’s final days upon us, we need, we want to experience something positive, promising,

and inspiring. Here is a sweet and savory culture dish I want to serve you, cooked by the one-and-only Yayoi Kusama. Above is a deliciously appealing photo of her sculptures PUMPKIN, 2015 exhibited at David Zwirner Gallery. Let’s cross our fingers that at upcoming Halloween festivities we will enjoy real pumpkin pie and will toast and pray for a hopeful future.

Once again, here are the most important things for all us to do in the upcoming weeks – WE MUST REGISTER AND WE MUST VOTE.

By Sonia Fernandez / The UC Santa Barbara Current

WINTER IS ON ITS WAY. And in this year of coronavirus, with it comes the potential for a second wave of COVID-19. Add in flu season and our tendency to head inside and close our windows to the

cold, wet weather, and it appears the next several months are going to present us with new health challenges.

UC Santa Barbara researchers Yanying Zhu and Lei Zhao hope to arm people with better knowledge of how SARS-CoV-2 spreads as the seasons change. Their new study investigates the secret of this virus’s unusual success: its transmissibility, or how it manages to get from host to host. The dominant mode, it turns out, changes according to environmental conditions.

“Back at the beginning of April a lot of people were wondering if COVID

would go away in the summer, in the warmer weather,” said Zhu, a professor of mechanical engineering and one of the authors of a paper that appears in the journal Nano Letters. “And so we started to think about it from a heat transfer point of view, because that’s what our expertise is.”

The virus, of course, did not disappear during the summer as hoped, and in fact COVID cases across the country continued to climb. To understand how the novel coronavirus manages to persist in circumstances in which the flu virus fails, Zhu, Zhao, and colleagues modeled different temperatures and relative humidities along a continuum from hot and dry to cold and humid in typical indoor spaces, where the virus is distributed by normal speech and

breathing — and, according to the paper, where people “only sneeze or cough into a tissue or their elbows.” To these scenarios they added emerging knowledge about the highly contagious microbe; in particular, how long it remains infectious outside a host.

The results are sobering. For one thing, respiratory droplets — the most common mode of transmission — don’t obey our social distancing guidelines.

“We found that in most situations, respiratory droplets travel longer distances than the six-foot social distance recommended by the CDC,” Zhu said. This effect is increased in the cooler and more humid environments to distances of up to six meters (19.7 feet) before falling to the ground in places such as walk-in refrigerators and coolers, where temperatures are low and humidity is high to keep fresh meat and produce from losing water in storage. In addition to its ability to travel farther, the virus is particularly persistent in cooler temperatures, remaining “infectious from several minutes to longer than a day in various environments,” according to several published studies.

“This is may be an explanation for those super-spreading events that have been reported at multiple meat processing plants,” she said.

At the opposite extreme, where it is hot and dry, respiratory droplets more easily evaporate. But what they leave behind are tiny virus fragments that join the other aerosolized virus particles that are shed as part of speaking, coughing, sneezing, and breathing.

“These are very tiny particles, usually smaller than ten microns,” said lead author Lei Zhao, who is a postdoctoral researcher in the Zhu Lab. “And they can suspend in the air for hours, so people can take in those particles by simply breathing.

“So in summer, aerosol transmission may be more significant compared to droplet contact, while in winter, droplet contact may

be more dangerous,” he continued. “This means that depending on the local environment, people may need to adopt different adaptive measures to prevent the transmission of this disease.” This could mean, for example, greater social distancing if the room is cool and humid, or finer masks and air filters during hot, dry spells.

Hot and humid environments, and cold and dry ones, did not differ significantly between aerosol and droplet distribution, according to the researchers.

The quantitative descriptions of virus propagation under varying local conditions could serve as useful guidance for decision-makers and the general public alike in our efforts to keep the spread to a minimum.

“Combined with our study, we think we can maybe provide design guidelines for the optimal filtering for facial masks,” said Zhao, adding that the research could be used to quantify real exposure to the virus — how much virus could land on one’s body over a certain period of exposure. This knowledge could, in turn, lead to better strategies for airflow and ventilation to prevent virus accumulation. In addition, the insights, according to the study, “may shed light on the course of development of the current pandemic, when combined with systematic epidemiological studies.”

Research on this paper was conducted also by Yuhang Qi and Prof. Paolo Luzzatto-Fegiz at UC Santa Barbara, and Prof. Yi Cui at Stanford University. Printed with permission of UCSB Office of Public Affairs and Communications
