As mentioned in the first part ofthis article, we continue with amore detailed story on the 1000mile journey the groupexperienced while touring in theNorth Island with their motorcycles. The bikes weretransported' in two containerswhich the group loadedthemselves at Perth, . and apartfrom a quantity of oil whichdrained from one during the 'flight , there was no damageanywhere. .

The Press people found us at theairport and irideed every day onthe trip the local newspapersfeatured articles which must havecontributed to the excellent publicattendance on the Sunday of theNational Rally .

From Auckland we rode toPukekohe for the two days of theannual meeting ofthe N.Z. ClassicRacing Register, and it seems eachyear the attendance of both ridersand public grows. The groupwandered around in a daze neverhaving seen so many motor cyclesgathered together in one place,ranging from veteran through toclassic racing, choppers, and theinevitable gang members' bikes.Several of the Australian grouptook part in the road run onSunday;

Monday was the first completeday on the road with Rotoruabeing our overnight stop . Theveterans departed at 8 a.m. , not tobe seen again until late thatafternoon in Rotorua. On theoutskirts of Hamilton anemergency stop by Barry Makinresulted in the rear brake anchoron the Raleigh jumping itsanchorage and causing somedamage in the process . Temporaryrepairs took him on to Rotorua .

First casualty was Ann Oakesriding a Royal Enfield Trials Bulletwhich started seizing up atMercer. Some time was spentchecking out the cause andeventually the bike was loaded onthe trailer for later investigation.During lunch at Karapiro it startedto rain - and rain . We delayedmoving off for a while but with nosign of it easing, the decision wasmade to move off and a franticdash for bikes and wet weathergear ensued . Once under way therain got worse, it seemed it was aregular cloudburst. All bikes hadbeen well water-proofed - butnot so riding equipment. Boots, gloves and coats soon becamesaturated.

On the outskirts of Rotorua wefound Don Mardle fromAuckland, waiting to join thegroup, and on Wednesdaymorning when we left , GarryWaldron astride his 1929 B.S.A.vee twin , son Peter on an L.E.Velocette, and Garry's wife andfamily in their vintage car , alsojoined us. However, it 's back toMonday afternoon and with theNewmans coach leading the way,the motel was soon located . KenCampbell , one of . the localmembers, had offered us sheltertogether with those of the groupwho wished to garage their bikes.A short trip to Ken's residencesoon had his garage and basementlooking like a real museum .

Tuesday was a sightseeing dayfor most of the group other thanthose like Ray Oakes whostripped the Royal Enfield toenable repairs to be made. Thisentailed having the cylinderhoned and new rings fitted to the" cleaned up " piston. Barry Makinwho broke a brake shoe the

previous day had a stroke of luckwhen we visit ed the localKawasaki agent who had twonearly identical shoes in a junkbox . Needless to say they werequickly purchased and fitted tothe Raleigh . By '10 o'clock thatevening Ray had the Royal Enfieldrunning again reasonably well.

Wednesday it was on the roadagain through to Taupo for lunch, then across to Napier for thenight. The Royal Enfield seizedagain during the morning and itwas back on the trailer for the restof the two weeks. All the othershad a good run - the mountainsection proving no obstacle . JoyWa llace rode all the way requiringjust the occasional . push fromFather Jim on the very steepsections. On this mountain sectionEric Langton rode John Gloyn's1913 Colonial Model B.S.A., andfollowing behind him it was hardto believe he was a rider in hiseighties. Kennedy Park MotorCamp was the main venue for thenight with Barry Andersonoffering accommodation for six ofus in the group . The evening wasspent with typical Hawkes Bayhospitality at their clubroomswith a most enjoyable noggin andnatter.

Thursday was an easy run toMasterton with a lunch stop atWoodville Primary School. LynneHuddleston, Adrian Gover, Rayand Doris Long organised lunch, and here the school childrenreceived a lesson on V and Vmotor cycles. Rockydemonstrated how to start a fixedengine machine with some extraacrobatics thrown in for goodluck. On arrival at Masterton thePress were again waiting for us,and following a photo session wespent the evening with theWairarapa Branch members whobilletted most of the group.Friday morning was spentcleaning and polishing themachines which , after theirweek 's trip , were showing signs ofusage. At 11 o'clock there was aMayoral Reception in theMasterton Public Library whereRay Oakes handed over a message

from the Mayor of Perth to MrFrank Cody, Mayor of Masterton.Numerous other entrants were inMasterton at this time and at onestage approximately 60 machineswere parked in one line outsidethe Library. Several Ministry ofTransport officers were presentkeeping the traffic moving. andafter the reception, two of themprovided a motor cycle escort forthe group through to Featherston.

The rally itself has been dealtwith in a previous article so I willnot dwell on this except to say theentire group thoroughly enjoyedthemselves and were unanimousthat it was well worth coming.

Monday morning we departedin light rain over the RimutakaHill, through the Hutt Valley andover the Paekakariki Hill Roaddown to Len Southward'sMuseum for lunch and spentseveral hours viewing themuseum. Len very kindly allowedthe group into the basement areaas well. Unfortunately we werenot able to spend as long as manywould have liked, as theHorowhenua Branch wereexpecting us for the evening. TheScout facilities at Tatum Park hadbeen booked and about thirtyspent the night here . The grouphad by now grown considerablywith numerous North Islandmembers making their way homewith us . Once again a mostenjoyable evening was spent atthe Horowhenua Branchclubrooms with a barbecue mealfirst on the agenda . Tom Hayes.Barry Jenkins and other Levinmembers organised an evening ofsinging, games and competitionswhich the entire group thoroughlyappreciated .

Tuesday dawned fine and clear, and our route led us throughShannon to lunch at PalmerstonNorth, then on to Bulls where BobClark had afternoon tea waitingand this sustained us through toWanganui where we went for anevening meal with the Wanganuimembers. Mike Kendrick, andRoss Glenny started up the Club'svintage truck and drove the groupto the top of Drury Hill.

PAGE FOUR

By now the pattern for each dayhad organised itself with theveterans being first off, usuallyhalf an hour to an hour ahead ofthe main group. and with nomechanical troubles since Napierof the previous week, each day'srun was developing into anenjoyable scenic tour. Wednesdaywas no exception, and following alunch stop at Hawera organisedby Wally Hunt and the TaranakiMembers, we continued on toNew Pymouth and spent theevening at the clubrooms with anoggin and natter and meeting thelocal members. Also several of thegroup here enjoyed hospitality ofNew Plymouth members.

Thursday was a long day, ridingto Hamilton via Mt Messengerand the coastal route, arriving inHamilton late afternoon. After ameal in the motel we spent theevening at the Hamilton MotorCycle Clubrooms watching prewar films of their activities . HughAnderson had kindly organise theevening for us.

At this point the tour officiallyfinished as there were notsufficient persons to warrantcarrying on through to Taurangaand Gisborne. Friday the grouprode to Auckland where theirmachines were left in storage atthe airport. Newmans hadorganised a bus trip of the farnorth and a few days around theLake District of the South Islandbefore their return to Australia .Since then we have correspondedseveral times, and I would like to .place on record their thanks aswell as mine to all VCC membersand branches through the NorthIsland who helped in so manyways . Without their assistance itwould have been difficult to haveorganised the trip, and it was thisaspect that impressed theAustralian group where clubmembers - regardless of theirvehicle interest - all helped tomake this a holiday to remember.

At the time of writing I havebeen notified by Ray Oakes thatthe Perth Club have provisionallyset late September 1986 as thereciprocal visit for a New Zealand

T,..e$toneput Quality first

group. A hub type rally isenvisaged at Perth for a week, followed by a similar week atBanbury. Anyone interested injoining this group are invited towrite to me at Box 158, Masterton.

A.G.M. 1983BLENHEIMby Dianne Ross

It's hard to believe that twelvemonths have passed since wewere waiting for the fog to clear sowe could fly to Napier en-route tothe last A.G.M . in Hastings .Travel this year was again notwithout hassle . Many NorthIsland folk had their plansdisrupted by the stoppage of theCook Strait ferries . One can't helpbut wonder if the powers that bein the ferry department havesomething against the V.C.C. as tomy knowledge , this is the thirdtime a V.C.C. event has beeninconvenienced by a ferry strike.Luckily the air force came to therescue and those who ' wishedwere 'ferried' by air. One ladyfrom Manawatu, having her firstflight, found herself sittingalongside the wall of a Herculeswith her knees under a car.Hardly Air N.Z. comfort but theflight only lasted 12 minutes .

The weekend activities werecentred at the Racecourse Hall in

Blenheim where on Friday nightthe first part of the ExecutiveMeeting was held. MarlboroughBranch Chairman Garry Turnerwelcomed all present to theConference which was being heldin Marlbrotigh as part of thatbranches 25th Anniversarycelebrations. This meeting sawthe formation of a new branch forthe Auckland area to be known asthe Waitemata Branch. Supperwas served at the conclusion ofthis meeting.

Saturday morning began withmorning ' tea after which wegathered together for the A.G.M.Full reports from the organisers ofthe 1985 Commemorative Rallyand the 1986 Pan Pacific Rallywere presented followed by theother reports previouslycirculated by post. The election ofofficers which had beenconducted by postal vote saw nochange in the elected executivefor the ensuing year. Votingaverage from branch

memberships was pretty dismal,an average of 28% .

During the A.G.M. there was abus trip for those not wishing totake part in the meeting. This tripwent to the Montana Winerywhere those present were shownthe wine making process and did alittle tasting. After lunch privatecars ' were available for a touraround Picton and Waikawa Baypassing through some of the areasdevastated by floods earlier thisyear .

Back at the Racecourse groupphotographs were next on theagenda. These were efficientlyorganised and taken and werefollowed by lunch alfresco style.

The · second part of theExecutive Meeting got underwaypromptly at 1.30 p.m. During thissession sub-committee Chairmenwere elected (or should I say reelected) for all were returnedunopposed . General Business wassoon concluded and the time forserious socialising had arrived.

Dinner at night was followed byentertainment with a bandperhaps more suited toentertaining than dancing. Thisbrought the weekend programmeto a close. Thank youMarlborough for your hospitality. We look forward to seeing you allagain in Wanganui 1984.

Northland CarClub's 21stBirthdayby John Nuttall

The Northland Branchcelebrated its 21st Birthday inMarch this year. The Birthdayweekend was also to be ourinaugural Veteran Rally, andwould involve two different rallyroutes.

The Rally organisers Jim &Merle Montgomery andcommittee planned for a few localcars, a few Veterans and aBirthday dinner. At the close ofentries there were 105 vintage, veteran & motorcycles. Theentries came from aroundNorthland, Auckland, and the

Waikato and with the pleasingnumber of motorcycles it wasdecided to organise a special runfor them .

The programme for Saturdaystarted with a gathering of allvehicles in the surroundings ofHeritage Park where our Club hasits Headquarters, this gav e thepublic a great opportunity to viewvehicles like Jim & MerleMontgomery's 1912 S.C.A.R., BobTaylor 's 1906 REO , GerhardKulhmann 's 1900 Darracq, and somany other beautifully preparedcars and motorcycles.

After lunch the rallies began ,veterans to the right , vintage tothe left unless the navigator washaving problems. A very colourfulstart with brass followed by nickelfollowed by chrome and the mostcolourful and noisy was the 1909Renault Charabanc ably driven byJohn Stokes and advised as usualby nine bloodshot eyednavigators.

The veterans tra velled about 40mil es and the vintage about 72miles, all the rallies were hasslefree and designed to show off ourbeautiful countryside andbeaches. Entrants experiencedonly minor problems except ourtwo club vehicles; the BabyAustin started making expensivenoises and was towed home andthe Model T truck driven byWally Bullock ran out of petrolnear the finish, we have nowshown Wally where the tank is so

Jim & Me rle had done somefiguring out and decided thatsadly there was no way of fittingthe 200 plus people who hadbooked for the dinner , into ourClub rooms, so they wiselychanged the venue ·to the .A & PExhibition Hall.

And so after washing down thedust we all assembled to celebratewith a welcome drink and abeautiful meal followed bydancing . Our · Branch PresidentVern Fairbrother welcomedeveryone and then aided by hiswife, Barbara, Jim and MerleMontgomery cut the cake.

The overall winner was ElmerMusic driving his .1913 .Mode l TRoadster, a popular win becauseElmer was a foundation memberof the club.

Sunday morning many vehiclesreassembled at the club roomsand again many local people tookthe opportunity to look , andwithout doubt the most looked at

car was Brian and Mary [ackson's1930 Packard sports Phaeton . 0

North Otago:Mystery Runby ¥onica Fitzgerald

John Buick can certainly pickthe right day for an outing Sunday, May 15th was just perfect- not a cloud in the sky when 8club cars, 2 , modems and 2motorcycles assembled at theClubroorns for a 9.00 a.m . start. We were told to fill our tanks soguessed it was to be a fair ,run.Tom Stephens, in his 1928 ModelA Ford 'led the way out throughthe rolling hills of Enfield,Tokarahi , where the first stop wasmade to view Charlie Fraserscollection of spare parts. It wasthen on to 'the Dansey Pass road .No-one was then left in any doubtas to where we were heading. It ismany years since I have been overthe Pass, th en in the Chrysler, thistime in our 1947 Sunbeam Talbotand I thought the road hadimproved. A great sight when wegot to the top of the Pass 'and

watched all the other cars, manylike us, boiling and very oddnoises coming from others. Therewere:the odd pockets of snow onthe hills and for once I was glad ofthe "untidy kiwi " who left anempty .beer can on the ground - 3fills from the stream and ourradiator was full again.

A pleasant relaxing petrol andcomfort stop at the Dansey PassHotel 'and then onto Naseby forlunch in the Domain . It was thenthat Andy Wilkie discovered hehad a slow leaking valve in histyre on his 1940 Willys - good tohave Club feeling - the Garageproprietor fixed it for him and saidhow he was restoring a car at themoment. Small world.

Chevs were the most popularcar on the outing with LenWithers in his 1928, Jim Kane inhis P.V. 1936 and John Brester in

his P.V. 1933 model. Themotorcycles found the going a bittough on the hilly shingle roadsbut both Jim and Stephen Welshmade the grade even if they didloose contact with each otheroccasionally. Suggest next timethey rig up an R.T. betweenthem.!

After looking at the old relics inthe museum and a general lookaround the autumn colours werestill in evidence, we came homevia the Pigroot, stopping off at theDunback Domain for a welcomecuppa. All the cars appeared tohave had a trouble free run - ourestimate of the mileage wasapproximately 160 miles .

Other members, taking partwere John Buick in his P.V. 1935Buick . Alister Allan in his 1928Dodge and Doug Wilkie and PeterAnderson in modems.

Thanks John for organising agreat day 's motoring and youcertainly can pick the days as inthe next couple of days, several ofthe roads were closed because ofthe snow storm. 0

Three Decades ofDunedin to Brightonby Eileen McMillan

Some thirty years ago, havingjust attended the new film"Genevieve" . and reflecting onthe pr esence 'of a small coastalvillage by the name of Brightononly a few miles south of the city ,of which he was then Mayor, SirLeonard Wright determined tostage in Dunedin an event alongthe line s of th e world -famousLondon to Brighton Run forVeteran Cars which was at thattime .nearing its sixtiethenactment. It was Sir Leonard

who approached members of thenewly formed V.CC. , OtagoBranch to suggest 'a Dunedin toBrighton Run , and thi s was onlyone of many ideas generated bySir Leonard to augment Dunedin'sfirst Festival Week in 1955, forwhich he was the ' primeinstigator. An immediate success,Festi val Week became an ' annualoccurrence, as did theDunedin toBrighton Run for Veterans.

In late 1954, ' therefore, anautonomous committee drawn

from members of the OtagoBranches of the Vintage Car Cluband the Automobile Associationwas set up under thechairmanship of Michael Haggittto organise , Dunedin 's firstBrighton Run. For two years thisevent took place on a Fridayafternoon , departing from TahunaPark. However, the scheduling ofthe third run in 1957 was changedto a Saturday morning in theOctagon, and the flagging away ofthe vet erans wa s made the

Beaded Wheels No . 139 in anarticle on the Invermay Hillclimbwhich grew directly from them .

The first organisers of th eBrighton thought to makeprovision only for cars ,understandably perhaps since itsvene rable British predecessor is sorestricted to this day . But interestin motorcycles in this country hasalways been strong, and since1958 they have taken anincreasing part in the Dunedincontest. Nothing now equals theintrigue of the occasional sidecaroutfit for the young (and not soyoung) spectators.

The longest-running solelyveteran event in New Zealand, theDunedin to Brighton Run hasenjoyed a steady and surprisinglyvaried patronage throughout itsexistence. Besides loyal OtagoBranch entrants, of which two(the 1900 Wols eley alr eadymentioned, along with LinGough 's 1914 Buick) have takenpart on all twentynine pastoccasions, supporters have comefrom as far afi eld as Wanganuiand even Auckland to compete. The lists of contestants over theyears make impressive reading, and one hopes that all theseelderly conveyances are stillenjoying a hale and hearty old age .

As th e first of many celebrationsto mark completion of threedecades since the establishment ofFestival Week, the thirtiethBrighton Run in 1984 should be aparticularly splendid one. Inaddition, on e week later followersof historic motoring in thiscountry will be able to view - ortake part in thecommemorative Dunedin RoadRaces, when the old round-thehouses event is revived on 29January 1984 on a modified WharfCircuit (for det ails see Bead edWheels No . 1411 at th e end of aweek of civic festivities .

E.R.A. J'Hanuman' to Race inDunedinby Eileen McMillan

The Otago Branch's DunedinRoad Race Committee hasrecently received the excitingnews that the famous E.R.A.Hanuman" , owned by Bill Morris, has been shipped from England, and will rea ch New Zealand laterthis year. While here, Bill intendsto compete in a number of events, including the revival DunedinRoad Races in January 1984. Tomy knowledge, E.R.A.s havenever previously raced in thiscountry (I stand to be corrected ifwrong). and the presence ofHanuman will add considerableinterest to what promises to be atruly vintage motor racingmeeting.

One of only seventeen carsproduced by Raymond Mays ,Humphrey Cook and PeterBerthon 's firm, English RacingAutomobiles Ltd . during theperiod from 1934 to 1952,

Hanuman along with Romulusand Remus will need littleintroduction to enthusiasts ofmotorsport history . Completelyrebuilt at the factory from partsafter Prince Bira 's major crash in1939, Hanuman II (as it thenbecame known) was later residentfor some time in SouthernRhodesia. The story of how BillMorris came to acquire Hanuman,as recounted by friend GregMcKenzie, is of interest. Startinghis long motor racing career witha Brooklands Riley with which hecompeted in Vintage Sports CarClub events, Bill later spent aperiod in Formula Junior cars.About 1961 the E.R.A. wasadvertised for sale in SouthernRhodesia and as Bill happened tohave a sister living in SouthernRhodesia, he asked her to get intouch with the owner. By chance,it transpired that Hanuman 's

owner wished to get into FormulaJunior racing, so that Bill was ableto arrange what was essentially aswap of vehicles with his ownLotus 18 and thus Hanuman wenthome to the United Kingdom. Itwas at that time in rather a sadcondition , but after making itroadworthy, Bill raced the E.R.A.for one season. However , findingit to be not very reliable, Billcompletely stripped and rebuilt it.Since then Hanuman hasregularly contested every seasonin V.S.C.C . events.

Although for the 1984 event it isplanned to have a parade of the

The History ofHolden Since 1917by Norm Darwin

This book is one of those thatshould be on the shelves of everyhistorian or Vintage carenthusiast. It is very wellcompiled and has a lot ofinformation his torically, I found itmost interesting and enjoyablereading.

The first few chapters arededicated to the early years ofHolden assembly and building, mostly of CKD types . Holden wasnot biased as he assembled orbu ilt a ll types of cars from everypart of the · world, perhaps theAustralian motor companies werelucky, for their Governmentaround the year 1929 put ontariffs to help local content.

As you read this book you willfind it full of facts.the Autho r musthave spent much time and care incompiling these . The book also

has an abundance of photos, wellprinted and very clear , withapprox. 100 coloured photos in itstotal of 223 pages.

Part of the book covers trucks, wartime vehicles and eq uipment ,and then in m uch detail it runsinto the manufacture of the allAustralian car which came out in1948, then follows on to latermodels .

In conclusion, even thoughHolden is mentioned as a title ,throughout the book it alsomentions many other breeds. It isa book with a wealth ofinformation well worth reading, Ialso consider it well priced.

August run wh ich was plotted byClub Caftain John Stringer and hiswife Gil was a most enjoyable da ywhich had many of us driving aroundin ever increasing circles. Sir,It was .with great int erest and

mounting excite ment that 1 read JohnKing's descript ion of the handling ofPeter Benbrook 's 'Ford V8 Special :here was a sec re t of performan cedriv ing that 1could attempt for mys elf!Inverm ay F.T.D . was within my graspat last!

I ' hurried out to my trusty 14/40Vau xhall with a great armful of blocks(concrete 8" 1 and , after much ca refulconsidera tion, stow ed them along therunning boards, Then it was off for atest drive. Som ehow the performancewas not wh at it had been and the roadholding altho ugh "solid" lackedresponsiveness . The traffi c office r,onto wh o's toes ·one of the blocksrolled during a spirited right-h and erwas so mew hat unimpress ed too.(Althoug h 1 did poin t out the relevantpassage tohim.]

Home once more 1 pondered thematt er un til inspirati,on str uck - itwas obvious! 1 discarded the block s(concr eteI and , rushing int o the partsshed , em erged with a grea t armful ofblock (Hudson Stra ight-Eight, w ithsco red bores I wh ich 1 perched on thecarrier at the rear of the 14/40 . It wasthe wo rk of a moment to attac h 3 feetof stout rope ' from th e block to aconve nient point on th e rearbodywork and then off round th e testcircuit again . It was obvious that whatwas meant wa s th at the block wo uldincrease the brak ing efficiency of th ecar. .With a song in my he art 1 sailedinto the hair pin bend and prodded theblock off .the carrier with a cunninglyweild ed shovel handle. Th e stoppingpow er exceeded even my wildestexp ectations and it was on ly theinh erent we akn ess of the bodyconstruction whi ch caused the rearhalf to remain behind with the"anchor". 1 always wa nt ed a singleseater anywa y. It wa s just sheer badluck that th e same tra ffic office rhappe ned to be followi ng me close lyon his motorcycle!

After a ce rtai n amount ofunpleasan tness 1 agai n returned homeand pon dered the report again: Ofcourse ! It wa s per fectly clear ! The"armfuls of blocks" wer e meant to add" fly wheel effect " to the stee ring! 1rapidly sm ashed up four or five blocksw ith a hammer a nd stu ffed th e piecesof conc rete do wn the sleeve s of mydriving jacke t an d sa llied forth once

more in my mu ch light ened " racer".The "a rmfuls of blocks" took so megetting used to and my course wassomewhat erra tic, but . 1 am sure Icould have got the hang of it if Ihadn 't , in signalling a right-hand tu rn ,clipped a point-duty office r under theleft ear. I see med ' to recogn ise himfrom som ewhere! I decided , in theinterests of road sa fety, not to blockthe inter section wh ile awaiting him toregain conscio usness and motore dqui et ly home.

Well , I don 't know . I am gazing yetagain at the Beaded Wheels andcannot think of an y other permutationof the advice given . Wai t a minute!Could it be? Surely not? I know it is awild theory, but could it possibly be

. that it wasn't supposed to be " blocks"but, in fact , " lock" .

Oh , I say', I do ' feel a 'fool!

Sir,I have recently started restor ing a

Buick model 27 series 29 spor ts tourer. The ca r has a 112 1/8th in . w heel baseand its serial No is 116254. It hasseve ral unusual feat ure s such asadjus table bucket front seats, sidemounted spa re , and wh at appea rs tobe two folding seats in the floor of thepassenger area , thu s mak ing it a sevenseat er .

The floor of the passengercompar tme nt has two recess es in' thefloor , behind the bucket seats. Thesemeasure approx. 400 by 300 by 50deep , and are mad e of folded steel setdown betwe en the timber frames . Ateac h side of the recesses are castbra ckets whi ch' look as thou gh th eyare a pivot for folding seats .

1 conside r that this would be anunu sual feature in the short wh eelbase , and [ wonder if any reader ca nenlighten me abo ut th is. I draw yourreade rs atten tion to my adve rtisemen tin the classified ads sect ion .

Sir,A note sayi ng " tha nks and terrific"

for you r inserting my requ est in No142 " Beaded Wheels " magazine onmy q uest for Case owners.

Toda y I got a lette r from CarlMarti n , Wats onia 3087, Victor ia ,Austr alia about the article an d he sentme a photo of a Case in a 1973 rally said he would tra ck further into the

Case for me . Thinks ther e are moreCase in his area .

Sir ,As has been my usual cus tom for

ove r 23 yea rs, I read my BeadedWheels from cove r to cove r. I havenever felt stro ngly enough before towri te to Th e Editor , but after read ingthe. column, 'From Th e Pres ident ' inissue No. 142, I fee l that I mu st statemy views in resp ons e to Norman' spoints a, b & c. To me th e question ofw hich branch a member should be amember of is easily resolved . He orshe is a member in their geographicalarea, unless a new branch is form ed orspecial circumstances apply, butsur ely a member in Tek apo should notbe a member of North Shore .However, points b and c are those thatconcern me deeply .

It conce rn s me becau se in my view.we are fast becoming so far rem ovedfrom a Vinta ge Car Club that it is notfunn y. Und er our pr esent (to meludicrous) rul es , the ow ner of arestored Datsun Bluebird , could havethat vehicle accept ed as a P.W.V. Hav ewe forgott en that the se vehicles werethe reason tha t our club was formed? Please read the bott om right handcorne r of page one in Beaded Wheels,

revu lsion from .the flash ymediocrity - . Norman mentioned thatPost Vinta ge Vehi cles came in w itho uta hiccup . Probably becau se thosevehicles we re at least ma de wh en tinwas tin. 1 feel that you ca nno t co mpa retheir qu ality and workmansh ip WIth aJapanese x y z of 1965.

Then to' suggest th at we take onemake clubs und er our um bre lla, we ll,what the heck are we being asked tobe . To me it smac ks of empirebuilding . So far as I am aw are, onemake clubs only require theappropriate bad ge to qu alify .. So then we are to be faced with 1983tinware on our events. NO SIR, 1cannot mak e a strong enough plea toret ain our VINTAGE Club , or reallywhat's left of it?

Perhaps those of us wh o have beensilent in the past shou ld remain silentno longer. Put pen to pap er and let ourelected members know wh at we reallyfeel.

BRIAN GOODMAN

Sir,I wish to express my concern at the

proposed $150 entry fee for th e 1986Pan Pacific Rally .

I ack now ledge that the entry fee" includes eve ning entertainment.' butfor wh om?

If there are four passengers to a carare the y all entitled to atte nd at no

extra charge? Hardly fair on a solomotor cyclist w ho will also have paid$150. What about a husband and wifew ho wo uld like to enter a ve hicle ormo torcycle eac h? At $300 it sou ndslike expens ive enter ta inme nt for th em!

Then th ere are th ose w ho forfinancia l, religious or yo ung familyreasons may not wis h to attend theevening events but mu st pay for themrega rdless .

If w e need to get into theente rta inme n t busines s then letentrants ma ke their indiv idual choicesfrom a list enclosed with the rallyen try form and include thei r separatepayment for the en ter tainment theywish to atte nd. The organisers w ill sti llhave twelve mon ths to confirm orcancel bookings according topop ularity, I be lieve the 1980Intern ati onal Rally was a financialsuccess with an entry fee of $75 so aproposed inc rease of 100% in six yearsis su re ly excessive? Please th ink againCommittee and let 's hav e a mu chreduced rally entry fee , affordab le byeveryone and let entrants chose theirenter tai nmen t according to theircirc umstances.

DON BROOM E

We thank M r Broome for hiscons truct ive comments and assurehim , that these, along with othe r suchcomments will receive fairconsideration when final decisions aremade.

While en tertainment is included inthe Rally Entry Fee it is but only asma ll port ion of that fee.
