The structure of an organization

The structure of an organization is the operating manual that

tells members how the organization is put together and how it

works. The structure describes how members are accepted, how

leadership is chosen, and how decisions are made. The

structure of the organization help everyone know who does

what. To have an efficient and properly functioning business,

you need to know that there are people to handle each kind of

task. You also want to make sure that people aren't running up

against each other. Creating a structure with clearly defined

roles, functions, scopes of authority and systems help make

sure your people are working together to accomplish everything

the business must do.

The purpose of an organization

The main purpose of an organization depends on the nature of

the organization. If the organization is for profit then its

main purpose is to earn money and accomplish goals and

objectives as indicated within the organizations vision

statement. If the organization is for non-profit then the aim

of this organization might be satisfaction or to give relief

to public.

The mission of the organization

The mission of an organization is its final aim, the

justification of its existence, and, at the same time, that

characterizes it as different from all other organizations.

The Organization’s mission statement tells the fundamental

purpose of the organization. It concentrates on the present.

It defines the beneficiaries and the cultural approach. It

informs of the desired level of performance. The mission

statement must be reflected on the organizational culture and

vice-versa. A mission statement can resemble a vision

statement in a few companies. A mission statement provides a

path to realize the vision in line with its values. These

statements have a direct bearing on the bottom line and

success of the organization.

What is a mission statement?

A mission statement explains the company's core purpose and

values. The mission statement describes the overall purpose of

the organization. It is a formal short written statement of

the purpose of the company.

.

Different types of organizational structures.

Functional organization structure

The functional organization structure classifies people

according to the function they perform in their professional

life or according to the functions performed by them in the

organization. The organization chart for a functional

organization consists of a Vice President, a Sales Department,

a Customer Service Department, an Engineering or Production

Department, an Accounting Department, an Administration

Department, etc.

Advantages

It has high degrees of specialization.

It has clear lines of authority.

It facilitates easy accountability for the work.

It accords a high level of speed and efficiency.

The need for duplication of work is eliminated.

All the functions command equal importance.

Disadvantages

Communication has several barriers which makes

coordination difficult.

More focus is laid on individuals rather than the

organization.

The decisions taken by a single person may not always

work in favour of the organization.

As the organization expands, it gets difficult to

exercise control on its operations.

There may be lack of teamwork between different

departments or units.

As all the functions are separated, employees may not

gain knowledge about other specializations.

Divisional organization structure

A divisional organization structure usually consists of

several teams focusing on a single product or service line.

Though small businesses rarely use a divisional structure it

can work for such firms as advertising agencies which have

dedicated staff and budgets that focus on major clients or

industries.

Advantages

Units which are not working can be closed down easily.

Each unit can be operated and treated as a separate

profit centre.

It accords rapid and easy decision-making.

It also gives a lot of independence to the decision

makers.

Individual products get separate attention as per the

problems they face.

It enables the organization to have a high productivity

and efficiency quotient.

Disadvantages

As each unit operates on its own, organizational goals

may not be achieved.

Unhealthy competition may exist among internal business

units.

As it has too many managerial levels, it may hamper the

business.

Accounting work and taxes may increase considerably.

All the units may not be considered as equal.

Marketing individual products may add up to the cost

significantly.

Matrix organization structure

This structure is a combination of function and product

structures. It combines the best of both worlds to make an

efficient organizational structure. This structure is the most

complex structure. It uses teams of employees to accomplish

work by capitalizing on their strengths while creating

weaknesses which are of functional form.

Advantages

Employees are not attached to temporary staff or

temporary work.

The functional manager controls the project.

The functional manager is responsible in case anything

goes wrong.

The more the project manager communicates with the

employees, the better are the results.

The project manager can make things happen without being

in control.

The decision-making rests in the hands of the functional

manager.

Disadvantages

The project manager may face strong apathy from his

workers.

The project manager does not have complete authority.

If not supervised, workers can reduce the productivity

of the entire unit.

The project manager is a weak authority who has no

control over the employees.

He has no control over workload management and task

prioritization.

He cannot even give a performance review.

Bureaucratic organization structure

This kind of structure can be seen in tall organizations where

tasks, processes and procedures are all standardized. This

type of structure is suitable for huge enterprises that

involve complex operations and require smooth administration

of the same. It is highly recommended for industries like

food, beverage, etc. as they have to adhere to stringent rules

and regulations.

Advantages

As the complete control rests in the hands of one

person, it is easy to achieve organizational goals.

Strict hierarchies ensure timely completion of tasks

and quality.

It helps in easy cooperation and coordination among

the employees.

Standardization and the best practices can be

implemented easily.

Employees have to adhere to policies and procedures.

Production takes place efficiently and effectively.

Disadvantages

A centralized authority can discourage employees.

It does not encourage innovative ideas.

It can lead to employee dissatisfaction and attrition.

It cannot adapt to changes in the business

environment.

One person cannot be responsible for coming up with

creative ideas every time.

It can trigger a power struggle in the organization.

Alliance boots’ mission statement

Our mission is to become the world’s leading pharmacy-led

health and beauty group.  We seek to develop our core

businesses of pharmacy-led health and beauty retailing and

pharmaceutical wholesaling across the world and become a

significant player in many major international markets.

The purpose and structure of alliance boots’

The purpose of alliance boots’ is to deliver products and

services that help people feel and look their best, they

believe in making a difference and are proud of the

contribution they make to the wellbeing of the communities

they serve. Their core values are partnership, trust, service,

entrepreneurship, and simplicity.

Alliance boots’ has a flat organizational structure.

The case study of Alliance Boots

Boots is the UK's leading health and beauty retailer and has

been trading since the 19th century. With around 1,500

stores in the UK and Irish Republic, it serves approximately

8m customers every week.

Boots develops and sells own brand products, a number of

which are leaders in their respective markets. The Boots

brand is founded on the trust, expertise and heritage, which

comes with its longevity in the market.

Market

Boots Group operates three principal businesses: Boots The

Chemists; Boots Opticians; and Boots Retail International.

Pharmacy is a fundamentally important part of the brand;

representing one quarter of sales, it is the foundation of

Boots' authority and credibility.

Boots stores are mostly located on high streets; but, in

line with modern shopping trends, its presence in edge of

town retail parks is rapidly increasing. Over the last three

years 48 such stores have opened, as well as a flagship

London store on Oxford Street.

Overseas, Boots is working closely with other major

retailers in their local markets, to open Boots branded

"implants" within their stores. There are currently 758

implants in 13 countries. Boots also has 96 standalone

stores in Thailand.

Achievements

Boots has had an illustrious history. From its beginnings in

1849 as an herbalist shop, Boots has continually developed

new product ranges, many of which are now household names in

their own right.

By the 1930s, Boots had more than 1,000 stores selling a

wide range of products, including its new cosmetic range,

No7. Expansion overseas began as early as 1936 with a store

in New Zealand.

Following World War II, Boots continued to grow, expanding

its manufacturing and research capabilities, including an

agricultural division. The creation of the National Health

Service in 1948 led to a vast increase in dispensing, which

Boots embraced.

Over the years Boots has successfully introduced brands such

as 17 cosmetics, aimed at teenagers, which was introduced in

1968 and new business ventures such as Boots Opticians --

now a major division of the business.

In 1985 the Research Department received the Queen's Award

for Technological Achievement for the discovery and

development of ibuprofen. The analgesic ibuprofen was

introduced in 1969 as a prescription drug, but launched as

the over the counter brand, Nurofen, in 1983.

Boots' internet business has become increasingly important

in the new millennium and a successful part of the brand.

Improvements have been made to the online customer

experience making navigation easier, resulting in boots.com

sales becoming bigger than those of the largest Boots store.

Product

Boots is best known for selling a wide range of products

under the Boots brand name across health and beauty. Within

this portfolio, it has the UK's biggest beauty brand in No7,

and Soltan, the UK's number one suncare range. In early

2007, the retailer launched the Boots Expert range; research

and development has always been key to Boots, developing new

products to improve its own-brands and exclusives ranges.

Boots Advantage Card, which awards customers four points for

every pound spent, (with points redeemable for products

instore), is a hugely important part of the business. With

almost 15m active cardholders, Advantage Cards are used in

around 70% of BTC sales. Linked to the Advantage Card, in

2005 Boots launched its Parenting Club for expectant and new

mothers, and followed it with the Boots Health Club in 2006,

giving regular advice and information as well as discounted

products to its members.

Installed in 1999, Boots Advantage Card kiosks provide

cardholders with personalised offers based on their shopping

habits. Boots is now updating its Advantage Card kiosks in

485 of its high street stores with smaller, faster and

easier to navigate models. Updated technology will also

enable offers to be more targeted.

Recent developments

The merger between Alliance UniChem plc and Boots Group plc

was completed on July 1 2006, creating an international

pharmacy-led health and beauty group operating in more than

15 countries across the world.

The Alliance Boots network will include two retail formats,

both under the Boots brand, ranging from approximately 1,500

smaller dispensing pharmacies to approximately 800 larger

destination high street and edge of town health and beauty

stores. In addition, Alliance Boots will also operate

approximately 300 additional retail outlets, including

freestanding Boots Opticians practices.

Boots is also developing in-store "health zones" in its

bigger stores, which will include extended waiting areas for

customers collecting prescriptions. Consultation rooms for

pharmacists are also being introduced, as part of a

government initiative to alleviate the pressure on GPs'

surgeries.

Promotion

Boots uses a wide range of media on an ongoing basis,

including TV, press, and direct mailings to its Advantage

Card members to highlight new products, offers and services.

Brand values

Jesse Boot, the son of John Boot, the brand's eponymous

founder, took control of the business in the 1870s. He had a

business philosophy of buying in bulk and passing the

benefit of reduced prices on to his customers. His policy of

superior goods at competitive prices delivered with expert

care meant that the Boots name became synonymous with

quality, value and service. His earliest marketing was based

around the concept of "Largest, Best and Cheapest - Branches

Everywhere".

This philosophy is still an important part of Boots' today.

It aims to treat its customers fairly and to act with

integrity in everything it does, which results in the brand

regularly being rated as the UK's most trusted brand.

Boots also believes that it has an enormously valuable role

to play in promoting the health of the nation. It achieves

this by forming innovative, long term partnerships with

charities, particularly focusing on women's cancer. Boots

has worked with Breast Cancer Care for 11 years, and this

year linked with the Eve Appeal to highlight ovarian cancer.

Boots also supports the health of the UK everyday through

its 15,000 healthcare advisers working in store.

Because there is so many departments in boots stores I am

Product brands

In our Health & Beauty Division, we have highly regarded and

long established product brands such as No7, Boots Soltan and

Botanics, together with newer brands such as Boots

Pharmaceuticals and Boots Laboratories. Product innovation and

development, packaging and product marketing capabilities are

key skills which enable us to develop new and existing brands.

We are continuing to internationalise our key product brands,

increasingly selling them through select retail partners, our

own and third party internet shopping sites, and independent

pharmacies. In the US, where Boots product brands have been

sold through Target for many years, we are, in addition,

introducing No7 and other key Boots product brands into the

drugstore channel through Walgreens on a phased basis. In

Asia, we extended our partnership with Dairy Farm to sell

Boots product brands in their health and beauty stores in Hong

Kong and Singapore. In Europe, our Boots Laboratories range is

sold by independent pharmacies in five countries.

In addition, we have long term partnerships with a select

number of third party brand owners to sell their products in

Boots stores on an exclusive basis, sharing in the future

brand equity. Most recently, we have established a specialist

investment fund to invest in small and medium sized consumer

brand businesses within the health, wellness, beauty and

personal care sector. We continue to manufacture a significant

proportion of our most popular own brand and exclusive

products.

In our Pharmaceutical Wholesale Division and associates,

Almus, our range of generic medicines, is sold in five

countries and Alvita, our range of patient care products, is

sold in six countries.

No7 is the UK’s leading skincare brand, available

only at Boots. Launched in 1935, No7 is best known for its

internationally acclaimed range of anti-ageing beauty serums,

developed by the Boots product development team in Nottingham

and all independently scientifically tested. The range of

anti-ageing serums first rose to prominence in 2007 when No7

Protect & Perfect Serum featured on a national television

programme. The range now comprises four clinically

proven anti-ageing serums each uniquely designed

to target the ageing concerns of a specific age

group. In May 2014, two new No7 Protect & Prefect

ADVANCED Serums were launched for women aged between 25 and 35

years and women aged between 35 and 45 years. No7 also has a

skincare range for men and a renowned range of cosmetics.

Launched in 1939, Boots Soltan is one of the leading sun care

brands in the UK, known for its UVA 5-star protection, a

standard of protection developed by Boots and now adopted as

the benchmark for sun care products in the UK. In addition to

being sold in Boots stores in the UK and other countries,

Boots Soltan is increasingly sold by third party retailers in

countries outside the UK.

First launched in 1995, the Botanic range, developed in

partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London,

uses high quality plant extracts combined with the latest

skincare technology in a variety of products, including

skincare, haircare, men’s toiletries, baby and indulgent

bathing. Botanics includes a range of organic products. Our

scientists work with plant experts at Royal Botanic Gardens,

Kew. Botanics skin care products are tailored for different

needs, meaning each range gives naturally beautiful results.

Launched in 2010, Boots Pharmaceuticals has the

widest range of healthcare products of any

brand in the UK, including therapeutically proven medicines,

natural alternatives, vitamins and first aid products. The

range builds on over 160 years of Boots expertise in

developing trusted healthcare products. In the year ended 31

March 2014, the range comprised more than 1,400 healthcare

products. Boots Pharmaceuticals was also launched in Italy in

2013.

SEVENTEEN is a cosmetics brand targeted at teenagers. Launched in 1968, recent innovative

product launches include SEVENTEEN On the Spot Foundation and

SEVENTEEN Cheek Stamp Blush.

Boots Laboratories is a clinically proven pharmacy skincare

brand developed specifically to be sold through independent

pharmacies across Europe. It was first launched in France and

Portugal during 2008/09 and is also sold in Italy, Spain and

Germany.

The Boots Laboratories portfolio includes:

SERUM7 - an anti-ageing range developed to tackle the

first signs of ageing

SERUM7 LIFT – an anti-ageing range to tackle more

advanced signs of ageing

SoleiSP – a suncare regime proven to protect against

sunburn and help prevent long term skin damage and

premature ageing

Optiva – an everyday skincare range to provide hydration

and healthier looking skin

Almus is one of the fastest-growing and most

innovative ranges of generic medicines in

Europe. Almus provides high quality generic medicines in a

wide and growing range of therapeutic categories. These are

produced by many manufacturers, including some of the world's

largest generics companies. Almus aims to lead the field in

patient-safe packaging design, and to provide unbeatable

operational efficiency in the pharmacy through a combination

of packaging clarity and high service level through the

wholesaler.

Alvita is a range of patient care products

including surgical, diagnostics, orthopaedics

and everyday health and hygiene. Alvita offers high quality,

reliable products, and provides value for money for both

pharmacist and patient. The range uses distinctive, clear and

concise packaging, so that patients find products easy to

identify and simple to use.

Boots Advantage Card

The Boots Advantage Card

loyalty scheme, launched in 1997, continues to be a key

element of the Boots customer offer, enabling customers to

earn points on purchases for redemption at a later date. It

provides Boots with valuable customer insight to further

enhance its customer offer.

By 31 March 2014, the number of active Boots Advantage Card

members totalled 17.8 million, reflecting the programme's well

established position as one of the largest and most valued

loyalty schemes in the UK. Around 90% of active members are

women, representing nearly 60% of the adult female population

in the UK.

Members collect four points for every €1 spent in store or

online. In addition, Boots periodically runs promotions

offering additional points (such as 10 points per €1 or triple

points). Boots Advantage Card members receive offers by mail

or via email, including special promotions and invitations to

special customer evenings for Christmas shopping in larger

Boots stores near where they live or work. The first digital

Boots Health & Beauty magazine was launched in February 2014.

Boots Advantage Card members aged over 60 can also join the

‘More Treats for Over 60’s’ scheme, which enables them to

collect 10 points per €1 on Boots branded products and No7

skincare, plus other benefits. Around 60% of Boots retail

sales are to Boots Advantage Card members. On average they

spend over 60% more per transaction than a non-member.

The Boots Parenting Club, which at 31 March 2014 had almost 1

million active members, is designed to support parents from

the early stages of pregnancy to their baby’s second birthday.

Key membership benefits are as follows:

products

products at Boots

24/7 access to information online, including a parenting

community.

The interaction of departments within Alliance Boots

Alliance boots have several different departments, all of

these departments work together through managers, supervisors,

and floor staff. Some departments might interact more with

other departments, no one department works alone they interact

with each other by sharing information and ideas and holding

meetings to discuss these ideas as a team. Alliance boots

departments are always working together at all times and this

is how the stores run more smoothly and no one department is

left out.

The principals and practices of personal

effectiveness

The four principals are:

Accept personal responsibility

Adjusting to change

Stay focused

Surround yourself with positive people

Accept personal responsibility:

To be responsible means that you have to accept yourself and

your circumstances, and accept responsibility for who you are

right now. You need to take the blame and when something goes

wrong openly acknowledge it was your fault, and don’t be

afraid to take risks or make important decisions even though

it can to scary to take responsibility for your own actions.

Adjusting to change:

Its human nature, we don't like change. We like to get into a

comfortable routine. Even positive changes can be difficult

because it is still an adjustment and we have to learn a new

pattern in our daily routine. Learning to cope with change is

an important skill and it will help us throughout our life,

whether it is a big change such as parenthood or a small

change such as moving to a new home. Accepting the change can

create a more positive attitude within ourselves because

adjusting to change is difficult and we all handle change

differently.

Stay focused:

We all have goals and dreams, but it can be so difficult to

stick with them, and try and stay focused on them. Staying

focused can be a very hard thing to do as there can be a lot

of distractions and problems in life and they can so easily

take your mind to somewhere else. There is no quick fix to

achieving our goals. It does require our motivation, effort

and time and to stay as focused as we can on them.

Surround yourself with positive people:

In our everyday life we are surrounded by a variety of

people. Some of the people we deal with on a daily basis are a

joy to be with, and their presence encourages us. Others may

have the opposite effect, draining us of our energy, making us

feel tired and exhausted. Surround yourself with people who

make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when

you’re in need. People who genuinely care. They are the ones

worth keeping in our life. Everyone else is just passing

through.

Adjusting to change can be very hard

especially if it’s a personal or family

matter, and not everyone can cope with

it. We all handle change differently,

but we need to learn to cope with change as this is an

important skill and it will help us throughout our lives. I

wish I could have taken that advice myself a few years ago as

my family and I had a lot of adjusting to do. My husband

found out he had another son he knew nothing about, we already

had 3 sons one of which I had from a previous relationship,

Essay

1:

but we knew this was going to be very hard as all my 3 boys

grew up together and here we were going to introduce another

bother whom was a little over a year older than my second son,

we really didn’t know how they would react to the news that

they had a step brother or how they would react to their

father for him not knowing anything about him.

As we eventually sat them down and explained to them that

they had a step brother we were more than surprised about how

they took the news, they were so excited about it and couldn’t

wait to meet him. Again we knew this was going to be very

hard especially for Adam as he had found out he had 3 brothers

he knew nothing about either, as days and weeks went by my

husband and I had met Adam and after a few weeks of my husband

meeting Adam and the two of them getting to know each other it

was now time for the boys to finally meet each other again we

knew this was going to be hard as we didn’t know how they

would react to one another, it was easier for my 3 sons as

they had each other but harder for Adam as he only had his

mother. We knew Adam was still a bit anxious about meeting

the boys so we did so on his terms and explained to the boys

how nervous he was about meeting them. They met him at his

house and we couldn’t believe how well they all got on

together.

At the start we would visit Adam at his house every week as

he was still quite shy about coming to our house we felt it

better for him to be in his own surroundings, he eventually

started coming over to our house every second weekend and this

is where the adjusting had to be done which I think we all

found very hard at first, because Adam was an only child and

of course his mother pet, he was also very giddy when she

wasn’t around and to be honest I didn’t think it was my place

to say anything to him so I asked his dad to but he didn’t

want Adam not liking him if he was to correct him in any way

he would just ask him to stop, where as if it was one of the

other boys did or said something out of place he would give

out to them.

This didn’t go down to well with the 3 boys as they could see

that Adam could do or said anything and get away with it. As

more weeks went by and Adam was still coming down and getting

away with everything there was always tension between the boys

and their dad because of the way he treated Adam. I

eventually had to step in and explain to my husband that what

he was doing wasn’t fair, that the four boys should all be

treated the same and that he shouldn’t be favouring Adam over

the other three. We knew this was always going to be a hard

situation and a lot of adjusting had to be done on both sides.

It is always hard to adjust to change but I think in

situations like this everyone has to pull together if you want

it to work.

Staying focused is what keeps us on track when we are trying

to reach our goals, there are many reasons why we lose focus

while pursuing our goals. The constant distractions in today's

world mean that maintaining focus can be very difficult.

Distraction of work, home, friends, socialising, and

Essay 2: Staying

focused

everything else constantly compete for our attention and

dedicated time. It takes time to stay focused on achieving our

goals and it's so easy to fail in our attempt to maintain

enough momentum, desire, energy and persistence needed to

achieve our goals. As a result we often give up and think our

goal is unachievable.

Other reasons why we might lose focus in pursuing our goals

is that we may talk ourselves out of pursuing our dreams. When

we first begin trying to achieve our goals, we may be

motivated by the fact that we are improving our lives and

achieving what we want in life. Shortly after starting to try

achieving our goals, we can often begin to question our own

ability of achieving what we want. As soon as we start

questioning our ability, we start to lose focus. To achieve

our goals and stick with them we need to write them down, when

they are in writing it’s more real to us for what we want to

achieve and a constant reminder of what we are looking for in

life.

We also need to build a plan for reaching our goal. Our plan

becomes more real when we are reading it and looking over it

and it helps us determine if we are going to be able to follow

it. We need to minimise distractions and get rid of as much

temptation as possible that deviates us from focus on our

goal. If our goal is to lose weight, then maybe we need to

throw away all takeaway and delivery food menus that are

delivered through our letterbox as this is a serious

temptation when we might be feeling down its very easy turn to

food for comfort. If our goal is to save money and reduce

money spent on non-necessities, then maybe we need to

unsubscribe from any online shopping, and only bring enough

with you when you are going shopping as this way you can’t

give into temptation if you see something nice in the shops,

we should also do a budget plan and write down everything that

we are spending our money on and see where we could save next

time.

We need to use every method possible that we can think of to

remove distractions from our situation and it will certainly

help us stay more focused in the future. We should also do

something towards achieving our goals every day even if it’s

only 15 minutes a day, it is better than not doing anything to

help us with our goal. If we gave our goals daily attention

this will help us remain more focused and give us a better

chance of achieving our goals. There is no quick fix to

achieving our goals. It requires our motivation, effort, and

time. Our goals are far more achievable when we stay focused

on them.

“Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who

make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. People who

genuinely care. They are the ones worth keeping in our life.

Everyone else is just passing through” this is a quote from

Essay 3: Surrounding

yourself with

Karl Marx, and how right is he there is nothing worse than being with someone who is constantly negative, it’s so taxing on

your body, and I feel negativity just breeds more negativity,

and at the end of the day it’s not your responsibility to have

to deal with everyone else’s negativity , it is important to

be a good friend, if your friend is obviously going through a

bad time, so it is important to be there for them.

But if this person is just constantly having negativity, and

being bashful about other people, and talking and gossiping

it’s just so unnecessary and there’s so many other things you

can fill your head with than drama and gossip. One of the

scary things I think when thinking this way is that you’re

probably going to lose a lot of friends, but I feel that is

better than having friends that are negative or constantly

gossiping, one of the most important ways we can get positive

energy in our lives is with the company we keep. Ideal

friendships provide support when we are down, fun when we are

up, wisdom when we are lost, and positivity regardless.

Good friends can inspire us to reach greater heights, and see

our strengths even when we don’t. We need to pay attention to

how our friends make us feel, and if they’re less than

supportive, we need to start putting our energy and time

toward people who are better suited to be our friends.
