12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?"

Incredible. Unbelievable. Miraculous. What a sight to behold.

If only we had been there with those disciples! What a help it

would be to our wavering faith to see Jesus calm the waves.

Could we ever doubt again that he was Lord of all creation

after a moment like that?

Well ... maybe. These remarkable moments do have a

way of losing their luster from a distance. In retrospect, we too

often second-guess such episodes of spiritual clarity: "Perhaps

it was just a coincidence. Maybe the storm was about to end

anyway. How can we know for sure?" In fact, it appears as

though the disciples themselves were already struggling with

forgetting the power of the signs they had previously seen.

This is why Jesus reprimands them because of their fear, "Do

you not yet have faith?"

Why does Jesus expect them to have faith already?

Because, as Mark's Gospel records for us, Jesus had already

cured countless people, cast out demons for all to see, and

even had a divine voice announce at his baptism, "You are my

beloved Son; with you I am well pleased," (1:11). The mira-

cles were not in short supply. The problem was believing in

the miracles even after they were over.

Let's not fall prey to the same problem, thirsting for

other miracles than the ones we have already experienced in

our own lives, subtle though they may have been. Let's not

make our faith dependent upon the appearance of the next sign

from God. No. Let us join the psalmist in maintaining an atti-

tude of belief, as we thank the Lord for "his wondrous deeds to

the children of men."

"Teacher, do you not care that we are

perishing?" He woke up, rebuked the

wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be

still!" The wind ceased and there was

great calm. They were filled with great

awe and said to one another, "Who

then is this whom even wind and sea

obey?" - Mk 4:38c-39, 41

The month of June is devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

During the month of June, this takes place in our parish

with devotions to the Sacred Heart on Mondays at

11:30AM in English and on Wednesdays and Fridays at

6:45PM in Polish at the Sacred Heart worship site.

The following are promises our Lord made to St. Margaret

Mary Alacoque, an apostle of the Sacred Heart in the year

1675. She and St. Columbiere were instrumental in estab-

lishing the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

I will give you all the graces necessary for your state in life.

I will establish peace in your families.

I will comfort you in all your afflictions.

I will be your secure refuge during life, and above all, in

death.

I will give you a special blessing to all your undertakings.

Sinners will find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean

of mercy.

Tepid souls will grow fervent.

Fervent souls will quickly mount to perfection.

I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart will be

exposed/honored.

I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened

hearts.

Those who will promote this devotion shall have their

names written in My Heart – never to be blotted out.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, honored and

adored now and forever.

PRAYER TO THE SACRED HEART

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, source of all goodness

and healing, you have loved me from all eter-

nity. Now I ask for the grace to love you in re-

turn. Please increase within me your gifts of

faith, hope and love. I offer you my own heart,

wounded by sin, crippled by unkindness; but

not beyond your power to make whole again.

Jesus, I ask that you continue to touch me, calm

me, and heal me. Teach me to be gentle and

humble of heart, to be patient and loving. In you

I live and move and have my being. In you I am

healed. Keep me close to you and the life and

wholeness that you bring. When I stray, give

me the grace to accept your invitation to return

to you. Glory to you, O Most Sacred Heart; glory

and praise and thanksgiving today and every

day. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in you.

(Say 3 times.)

Protect Rights of Conscience and

Religious Liberty

Now is the time to urge Congress to work to enact

critically important conscience protections this year. Such

protections will likely be included in a soon-to-be-

introduced appropriations bill, but House members should

be urged to ensure that it remains a high priority and goes

into law. Senators should also be called upon to help ensure

passage of these needed protections. Please take action to-

day to contact Congress.

The need for legislation protecting the rights of

conscience and religious liberty has grown more pressing.

The Obama Administration’s contraceptive/abortifacient

mandate under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) began to be

enforced against religious nonprofit schools, charities and

health care providers on January 1, 2014. More recently the

state of California started forcing all health insurers in the

state to include elective abortions in the health plans they

sell. These two problems are addressed by the Health Care

Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940). It would add a long-

overdue conscience clause to the ACA, and strengthen the

Weldon amendment that forbids governmental bodies

which receive federal Health and Human Services funds

from discriminating against those who decline to take part

in abortion or abortion coverage.
