Transcript of Bronnadh Céimeanna Conferring of Degrees - NUI Galway
Fearaim fáilte roimh chairde agus roimh mhuintir na mac léinn a bhfuil cáilíochtaí á mbronnadh orthu inniu ar an lá speisialta seo agus déanaim comhghairdeas libh go léir. Glacadh leis na chéad mhic léinn san Ollscoil seo sa bhliain 1849. Ó shin i leith, tá os cionn 118,000 céimí a bhfuil a gcuid ardoideachais faighte san Ollscoil seo acu, oideachas den scoth, mar is léir ó na poist mór le rá atá bainte amach acu ní hamháin in Éirinn ach ar fud an domhain. Is trua linn nach rabhamar in ann ceiliúradh a dhéanamh libh go pearsanta roimhe seo de bharr phaindéim COVID-19. Tá an-áthas orainn fáilte a fhearadh romhaibh ar ais chuig ár gcampas anois. San am eisceachtúil seo, is céimithe eisceachtúla sibh. Go raibh maith agaibh as an teacht aniar, foighne agus cineáltas atá léirithe agaibh. Go raibh maith agaibh as bheith ar bhur nós féin agus as bhur dtuiscint sna hamanna dúshlánacha seo.
An tOllamh Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh BComm (Gaillimh), DipPrAcc (COBÁC), PhD (Leeds), CA (Éire) An tUachtarán
On this significant day in you and your
family’s life, I extend a warm welcome
on behalf of the University to the friends
and the families of our graduands, who
are so deserving of our congratulations.
Since it opened its doors in 1849, over
118,000 graduates have benefited from
higher education in this University, the
quality of which is demonstrated by the
distinguished positions they held, and
continue to hold, not only in Ireland
but across the globe. We are sorry that
we could not celebrate with you in
person previously due to the COVID-19
pandemic. We are delighted to have the
opportunity to welcome you back to
our campus now. In exceptional times,
you are exceptional graduates. Thank
you for your resilience, for your patience
and for your kindness. Thank you for
being yourselves and giving of your best
selves in these challenging times.
Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh,
BComm (Galway), DipPrAcc (UCD),
PhD (Leeds), CA (Ireland)

Teachtaireacht ón Uachtarán
President’s Message
Teachtaireacht ón Úachtarán Ionaid agus Meabhránaí
Message from the Deputy President and Registrar
Is cúis áthais é dom fáilte a chur romhaibh go hOllscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh ar an lá speisialta seo. Táimid anseo inniu chun ceiliúradh poiblí a dhéanamh ar an ghaisce acadúil atá déanta agaibh i gceann bhur gcuid cúrsaí léinn le cúpla bliain anuas. Lá mór i bhféilire na hOllscoile atá ann agus ócáid níos mó agus níos tábhachtaí arís in bhur saol féin. Go maire sibh bhur gcéimíocht úr agus guím gach rath oraibh sa tsaol atá romhaibh amach mar chéimithe de chuid Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh.
The ceremony today, which involves a procession led by a mace bearer, musical accompaniment, the special robes, and the use of English and Irish, has a long tradition spanning many centuries. In Ireland it goes all the way back to the first university, established in Dublin in 1320, though it no longer exists, and has continued through the establishment and continuation of ten further universities. This University was originally one of three Queen’s Colleges established in 1845 in Belfast, Cork and Galway.
Then as now this University and its staff have been about ensuring that those who pass through here as students go out into the wide world equipped with the best education that they can get and that we can give them. The word ‘university’ comes from the Latin ‘universitas magistrorum et scholarium’
which translates as ‘a community of teachers and scholars’, and that notion of community is something we continue to cherish here. We mark today, the fact that in 2020 you took your place in an outstanding community, Galway graduates, and it is my fervent hope that you will do so with pride.
Tá súil agam chomh maith go mbainfidh sibh sult ní hamháin as an lá inniu leis an teaghlach agus, más féidir, le bhur gcuid cairde, ach as an tsaol atá romhaibh amach fosta.
An tOllamh/Professor Pól Ó Dochartaigh, MRIA, FRHistS, FHEA, FRSA, BA (Cardiff), BA, PGCUT (Ulster), PhD, DLitt (Nottingham)
