After serving as a law enforce-ment offi cer for 28 years, a former detective with the Okeechobee County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (OCSO) could possibly face up to 35 years on the other side of a jail door.

Tommie Joe “T.J.” Brock, 51, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 20, and charged with one felony count of sexual battery by a law enforce-ment offi cer and one felony count of sexual misconduct between detention facility employee and inmate.

He was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail under a total bond of $100,000 around 8 p.m. Records indicate that he posted bond and was released at 11 p.m. Brock’s a r r a i g n m e n t has been set for Wednesday, Nov. 18, in front of Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Mirman.

Brock was arrested by Special

Agent Vaden Shane Pollard, of the Florida Department of Law En-forcement (FDLE), on a warrant signed by Circuit Court Judge Dan Vaughn of the 19th Judicial Circuit. However, Brock will not be pros-ecuted by a member of the State Attorney’s Offi ce in the 19th Judi-cial Circuit.

According to Chip Thullbery, from the State Attorney’s Offi ce for the 10th Judicial Circuit headquar-tered in Bartow, Governor Charlie Crist has assigned the case to that offi ce. Victoria Avalon will pros-ecute the case.

Mr. Thullbery said if Brock is

found guilty on the sexual battery charge he will face a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. That sentence is enhanced because Brock was in law enforcement when the alleged crime was com-mitted. Ordinarily, the maximum sentence on that charge is 15 years, said Mr. Thullbery.

Brock is facing a maximum penalty of fi ve years on count two of the charging document.

Once again the emergency op-erations center (EOC) was brought up as Okeechobee County Com-missioners, at their Thursday, Oct. 22 meeting discussed requests to be presented to the Okeechobee County Legislative Delegation.

Commissioners also man-aged to save some money on the courthouse restoration project and discussed affordable housing, pur-chasing fi re engines and a possible new business at the airport.

Dale Milita, the county’s lobby-ist, gave the commissioners a pre-view of what to expect at the up-coming legislative session.

“The number one issue that is going to dominate the legislature is the budget shortfall,” Mr. Milita said. He warned that the legislature might approve unfunded man-

dates to shift the fi nancial burdento counties.

After considerable discussionwith Mr. Milita, the board agreed onthe three top projects to present tothe county’s legislative delegation. They were: funding to completethe EOC, a bypass road starting atthe intersection of S.R. 70 and S.R.710 that would intersect with U. S.441 north of the city and countyroad and bridge work. At the lastmeeting commissioners learnedthat the low bid for the EOC was$3.6 million, which was consider-ably lowered than expected. Theinitial estimate was $4.8 million. The county now has $1.5 millionin grant money from the state andfederal government to use on theproject. The board has not takenany action yet on that bid.

change order on the courthouse renovation project that resulted in $188,000 savings to the county. The original contract price for the courthouse project was $3,769,800. By deducting savings from credit for benches and owner direct purchases the contract price is now $3,580,957.

In a related issue, capital projects man-ager Donnie Oden suggested using two dif-ferent shades of white to show the architec-tural lines of the building a little better. This could done at no extra cost.

County administrator Lyndon Bonner said that at the Nov. 12 meeting he would bring back a proposal from a private developer to use grant money to build affordable housing on county owned property. The county had advertised for requests for proposals. There were two responses. Mr. Bonner said one was disqualifi ed. He said he would continue discussions with the developer in order to bring back a proposal.

The property in question was awarded to the county as the result of court action after the original recipient of the grant failed to get suffi cient fi nancing to complete his proposed

project. The county must either develop the site for affordable housing or refund to the state the amount of money disbursed to the original developer/loan recipient.

On weekends people might soon be able to go to the Okeechobee County Airport and take a fl ight in a World War II open cock-pit biplane. “We have a new type of aero-nautical business that would like to utilize the airport, “ interim airport director Kathy Scott told the board. Jack Riesel wants to

be able to offer fl ights in his vintage Steer-man trainer. He has expressed interest in renting a hangar for his aircraft when one becomes available. Currently the aircraft is hangared at the Indiantown airport. County airport regulations do not cover this type of commercial operation. Mrs. Scott described how other airports have handled this type of operation. She noted that the county could collect sales tax from the business and sug-gested a six month trial agreement.

retirement.“I have complete faith in our criminal

justice system. T.J. Brock will get his day in court just like anybody else,” said Okeecho-bee County Sheriff Paul May on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “And if he is found guilty, he should be punished just like everybody else.”

Brock is accused of having sexual rela-tions with a 39-year-old woman who was an inmate in the Okeechobee County Jail. She has since been released from jail but was later arrested in an unrelated case and is now being held in the county jail without bond.

The victim’s name has not been re-leased.

Agent Pollard’s arrest narrative states that the woman was arrested and booked into the county jail on April 22 of this year. She alleges that on at least two occasions Brock checked her out of the jail and had sex with her in offi ces located in the OCSO detective bureau.

On June 12 she told Special Agent Jeffery Serna, of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), about the incidents and gave him un-derwear she was wearing during a June 2 incident, stated the arrest report.

Agent Pollard said DNA was retrieved from the underwear and compared to DNA voluntarily given by Brock. The samples were processed at FDLE’s crime lab in Fort Myers and the DNA from the underwear matched the sample taken from Brock, the agent’s report stated.

The second incident took place on July 2, states the affi davit, which adds that: “Other law enforcement personnel present in the detective bureau saw ... when Brock removed her from the offi ce, and observed that she was crying.”

The affi davit states that the woman claims she was forced to perform a sex act by Brock.

Brock was placed on administrative leave on July 3 then fi red by Sheriff May on July 8.

After reporting the alleged incidents, the woman was taken to a jail in a neighboring county. She was released from jail in early October. She has since been arrested again on unrelated felony charges.

Brock began his law enforcement career

with the Okeechobee City Police Depart-ment and worked there for four years, be-fore moving to the sheriff ’s offi ce where he had worked for the past 24 years. He had been a detective for 15 years.

Sheriff May said he has talked with several members of his department about Brock’s alleged misdeeds and that they expressed disappointment in their former co-worker.

“Disappointment and disbelief would be the two words I would use to describe it,” said Sheriff May. “I’m saddened for everyone in this matter.”

No one is more upset than Brock’s for-mer supervisor Detective Captain John Rhoden, who said he still considers Brock a good friend. “Truthfully, I don’t know if I’m more hurt for the department or for him and his family,” said Capt. Rhoden. “It’s not the criminal act that bothers me most, it’s the loss of a companion.” Capt. Rhoden and Brock fi rst worked together at the Charles McArthur Dairy. Brock quit the dairy and went to work at the police department, while Capt. Rhoden joined the sheriff ’s of-fi ce. They had worked together at the sher-iff ’s offi ce for the past 24 years.

“T.J. will be my friend no matter what he does,” said the captain.

Okeechobee Arrest Report

By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News

Of the fi ve cases heard Tuesday, Oct. 20 by Okeechobee County Code Enforcement Special Magistrate Lois Nichols, three in-volved building permits. Property owners should be aware that most, if not all, con-struction projects in the county require a building permit.

In the one case where a fi ne was im-posed, Alto Watford and Michael Willis were fi ned $50 a day for every day of noncompli-ance beginning Oct. 21 for failure to remove a condemned structure and remaining de-bris from 3306 NW 36th Ave.

According to code enforcement offi cer Beth Albert, Vernon Barefoot had construct-ed a pole barn at 4602 SE 28th St. without the proper building permit. He was given until Nov. 12 to get the necessary permit and secure a fi nal inspection or he could face a fi ne of up to $250 a day.

Earl G. and Kristal Hoover were also cited for building a pole barn without a permit at 14869 NW 304th St. When they learned of the violation they applied for a permit and discovered that since the property is zoned single family, they must have a residence on the property before they can get a permit for a barn. They were given until Jan. 14, 2010 to come into compliance.

In the other building permit case, Mrs. Albert stated that Gary and Morris Cook had constructed a metal building at 17880 NW 304th St. without a building permit. They were given until Nov. 12 to obtain a permit and a fi nal inspection or face a fi ne of up to $250 a day.

Salim Lahma and Loretta Mathieu had been given until Oct. 20 to either demolish or renovate a deck and boathouse at 300 U.S. 441 SE. Mrs. Albert stated they had obtained an architect to draw up plans and requested an extension of the deadline to come into

compliance. Since they live in Michigan they were given until Mar 11, 2010 to have all work completed and secure a fi nal inspec-tions.

Upon the request of Mrs. Albert, the case against N & A Real Estate was tabled be-cause of extenuating circumstances.

The properties of Becky Lyn Williams, David and Raul Medrano, Juan A. and Ana Castro, Toni Gale Moseley, Charles R. and

Stephanie T. Crates, Mary Kliphouse and

Wayne Place were found to be in compli-

ance and those cases were not heard.

It was noted that the special magistrate

will not hold code violation hearings in De-

cember.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at

Property owners cited for construction without a permit

An Okeechobee woman has been ar-rested and charged with using bogus checks to pay for over $600 worth of cloth-ing that she purchased at a local store.

Tasha Trinette Ramirez, 27, N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 21, on felony charges of forgery (two counts), ut-tering a forged instrument (two counts) and grand theft. She was also arrested on a misdemeanor charge of petit theft.

Ramirez was booked into the Okeecho-bee County Jail under a bond of $13,500.

An arrest report by Detective John Zei-gler, of the Okeechobee City Police Depart-ment (OCPD), states that Ramirez stole at

least two checks from an acquaintance and used them to buy clothing valued at $636.98. The detective’s report also states

that all of the clothing was recovered except for one shirt and a pair of sunglasses.

The store’s security video reportedly shows Ramirez entering the store on two separate oc-casions on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Detective Zeigler stat-ed in his report that the woman bought $177.09

on her fi rst trip, then returned later in the day and purchased various clothing items totalling $459.89.

Woman arrested on forgery charges

H1N1• In the Wednesday newspaper, the

health department offi cials now say they have no idea when they will get the ship-ment for public distribution -- it may be after the fi rst of the year. Right now they are only giving the vaccinations to high risk patients. It seems strange when we see on television that on the coast they are lining up the gen-eral public and the coastal counties don’t seem to have any shortage of the shots. As usual, the state does not care about the rural counties.

• Eat right! Make sure you get your daily dose of fruits and veggies. Take your vitamins and bump up your vitamin C. Get plenty of exercise because exercise helps build your immune system. Walk for at least an hour a day, go for a swim, take the stairs instead

of the elevator, etc. Wash your hands often. If you can’t wash them, keep a bottle of an-tibacterial stuff around. Get lots of fresh air. Open doors & windows whenever possible. Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can. Get plenty of rest. You can do all that OR take the doctor’s approach. Think about it... When you go for a shot, what do they do fi rst? They clean your arm with alcohol. Why? Because Alcohol KILLS GERMS. So, I walk to the liquor store (ex-ercise). I put lime in my beer (fruit), celery in my Bloody Mary (veggies). drink outdoors on the bar patio (fresh air), tell jokes, laugh, then pass out (rest). The way I see it, if you keep your alcohol levels up, fl u germs can’t get you!

• I know there are folks who went out of state recently to visit with family. The kiddo’s got sick, doctor/hospital confi rmed (swine fl u) H1N1. Now the guests can’t come home to Florida, they are quarantined with the family at home there. These kids had NOT had the vaccine. Had they been vaccinated before they left the Great State of Florida they would have been allowed to leave. Of course the vaccine wasn’t available before they went north.

Wild horses• So now it appears we have mustangs

running loose around the Kissimmee River. Would it be such a bad thing if they just let them run wild on the public land? There used to be Cracker horses running wild here -- descendants of the horses that escaped from the Spaniards.

• If there is enough plant life to sustain them as stated, I see no reason they shouldn’t be left where they are. It isn’t like SFWMD is going to do anything with that land.

• While it might be nice to have wild horses running along the river I think what would eventually happen is the same rea-son they are there - overpopulation. With no natural enemies they would reproduce un-checked and become a problem just like the area they come from. The Bureau of Land Management just traps a bunch and sends them around the country to get rid of them. Sooner or later the market is saturated and nobody wants them any more. Then the land gets over grazed by bands of wild hors-es. These aren’t your Mr. Ed or Trigger kind of horse, they are wild.

Teachers• In regard to the story about the teacher

allegedly grabbing the boy and threatening him, if the kid would have behaved in class, the teacher would not have had to haul him outside. The law says there was no crime be-cause he didn’t hurt him. Grabbing him by the arm did not hurt him. Maybe if the par-ents didn’t baby these teenagers so much, they wouldn’t disrupt class to the point the teacher has to do something like this.

• When I was a kid, teachers could still spank the kids. And if I got a spanking at school, I got one at home too when the folks found out. If kids today had more discipline at home they wouldn’t have these problems at school.

Brigadoon• I think it’s great that the community

theatre is doing ‘Brigadoon.’ I loved that mu-sical. But I have a request. Before the play opens, they need to put a cast photo in the newspaper of all those guys in kilts.

• I heard a lot of great things about the last show “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

I think I am going to check out the local talent. I heard I won’t be disappointed.

Okeechobee ghosts• Has anyone heard of Yearling Middle be-

ing haunted in one of the bathrooms? Years ago the janitor that worked there got scared out of there. Even one time the cops came to investigate and they got so scared they ran out! Has anyone ever heard this story? I may

not have it perfect but that’s the idea?

• I have heard the story and the janitor refuses to comment.

• In Lorida, there is a cemetery that’s supposedly haunted. And in Ft. Pierce, they say that there’s a girls home that alleg-edly has the spirit of a

woman lingering around. Oh, and the Jupi-ter lighthouse, too.

• The old hospital building is EXTREME-LY haunted. And the current jail is too.

• There is a local business that is haunt-ed—friendly ghosts though.... We won’t mention who to jeopardize their business but it’s there. And many houses are haunted. I rented one house that a man passed away in (nice guy) and when I lived there I know I would see him.

• At the jail people have committed sui-cide there. Not only that -- a lot of “lifers,” meaning people who worked there all their lives and have passed on -- still come to work. The jail is teaming with activity.

• The great thing about living in Okeecho-bee is as soon as you get a new trailer they haul off the ghost in the old one. But I grew up here in an old house that was built around 1900 and to this day I swear it was haunted. You did not want to be in that place at night by yourself

• I heard out in the Dark Hammock Area they see the ghosts of cowhunters and the outlaws.

Remember when?• I remember Burger Queen, when I

worked there, had the 99 cent quarter box chicken special on Tuesday night. Two piec-es chicken (white or dark) coleslaw, fries and a dinner roll all for $0.99. Can you imag-ine the line out the doors. The chicken we had left over at the end of the night, we gave to the city police that came by. I especially loved the hot ham and cheese.

• Remember Biff Burger? You could get the best twistee cones there.

• I remember the day the Biff Burger closed, the sign in front of the window said “Closed due to a big mac attack.”

• Remember when the rodeo arena was behind the old High School (the Freshman campus now)? Can you imagine a rodeo in that area today?

• I remember when people could ride through the drive-thru on a horse and no one thought it was unusual.

• Speaking of remembering when. Re-member when everyone in town dressed up for Halloween? You would go into any offi ce building, bank, government offi ce, school ... anywhere in town ... and people would be dressed in costumes. The crossing guards at the schools would be in costume. The newspaper reporters taking photos of all the people in costumes would be in costumes. Okeechobee used to really go all out for Hal-loween and it was fun for everyone. That is one memory we could easily recreate so that our kids could remember that one too.

• Remember when Okeechobee had a watertower that you could climb and write on and hope you didn’t get caught?

Iron poor bloodI don’t know how many blood transfu-

sions I’ve had in my life, but I know that with-out them, I wouldn’t be here. When I was six years old, the doctor said I needed iron shots and that kept up until I was 26 when I had my fi rst transfusion. I’m 78 now.

They told me I had anemia, but when I was in my 40s they did a bone marrow test after I had a heart attack. They found I had almost no red blood cells. I should have died then, but I got eight transfusions in the next six months. It wasn’t until a few years ago that they told me I have Aplastic Anemia.

I usually know when I need a transfusion because I get tired and weak and sometimes run a temperature. Dr. Akhtar takes care of me now. I don’t get whole blood transfu-sions because I have too much iron now and that’s bad, too. It comes from all the differ-

ent people’s blood I’ve taken over the years. Now they have to take nine different parts of blood to make up my one transfusion.

I’m grateful for everyone in the past 50 years that has donated the blood I’ve had to have. I have 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren who are glad I’m still around, too.Maxine QuinlanOkeechobee

Editor’s note: In people who have Aplas-tic Anemia, the body doesn’t make enough red blood cells, white blood cells, or plate-lets. This is because the bone marrow’s stem cells are damaged. Aplastic Anemia also is sometimes called bone marrow failure. In more than half of the people who have Aplastic Anemia, the cause is unknown.

The Okeechobee Blood Roundup will be held again this year at First United Meth-

odist Church, 200 N.W. Second St., Friday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Satur-day, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. More than $4,000 in prizes to be awarded, goodie bags to every donor.

10 Okeechobee News October 23, 2009

By Pete GawdaOkeechobee News

A business that has been in and out of compliance with city codes for over 15 years is once again in compliance, at least for now. Business owner Marvin Brantley most recently ran afoul of the city when he once again faced charges of junk and creat-ing a public nuisance at the Oct. 13 city code enforcement board meeting. Mr. Brantley’s business is located on the east side of S. Par-rott Avenue just north of Wal-mart.

Photographs displayed by code enforce-ment offi cer Fred Sterling at the Oct. 13 meeting showed that by Sept. 10 Mr. Brant-ley again became a violator by dragging ob-jects from behind an opaque fence into the area beside the sidewalk.

City attorney John Cook stated that re-tail stores can display new merchandise outdoors but they cannot display used mer-chandise outdoors as Mr. Brantley was do-ing.

Mr. Sterling sent Mr. Brantley a notice of violation on Sept. 10. which Mr. Brantley signed for on Sept. 11. Mr. Sterling stated that on Oct. 12 Mr. Brantley was in the pro-cess of cleaning up his property. On Oct. 13 Mr. Sterling said that Mr. Brantley’s property was “greatly improved.” However, he would not go so far as to say it was in compliance.

Since Mr. Brantley is a repeat offender, a fi ne can be imposed from the date of noti-fi cation of violation. Therefore, after con-siderable discussion, the code enforcement

board imposed a fi ne of $500 a day on Mr. Brantley beginning on Sept. 11 and continu-ing until he came into compliance.

The day after the meeting, Oct. 14, Fire Chief Herb Smith, who is also a code enforce-ment offi cer, made the call that Mr. Brant-ley’s property was in compliance. Therefore, as it stands now, Mr. Brantley owes the city $500 a day from Sept. 11 through Oct. 13 or $16,500.

It is reported that Mr. Brantley might ap-pear before the code enforcement board next month to ask for a reduction of fi ne.Post your opinions in the Public Issues Forum at

Chamber guestsGuest speakers at the Wednesday, Oct. 14, Okeechobee Chamber of Commerce Meeting held at Gold-en Corral Restaurant were Raye Deusinger, Volunteer Committee Chairperson for the 2009 Okeecho-bee Blood Roundup and Russ Col-well, Donor Development Coordi-nator of Florida’s Blood Centers. Raye spoke about the importance of donating blood for the Nov. 13 and 14 Okeechobee Blood Round-up held at the First United Meth-odist Church to help save lives in Okeechobee. Their goal this year is 500 units. Russ talked about their need for blood as well and says giving blood is good for you and at the same time you will receive a basic health check such as having your cholesterol and blood pres-sure checked when you donate.

Community projects such as building a ramp, washing windows, cleaning storage areas, sorting clothes and other jobs were handled by youth and adults alike. A hard hitting and opportunistic defense picked off six passes and recovered two fum-bles as the Okeechobee High School Brah-mans junior varsity defeated Port St. Lucie, 8-2, on Monday night.

It was the fi rst win of the year for either football team this year.

“I’m really proud of the team,” JV Coach Rex Erwin said, “They really fought through some adversity after they gave up a safety ear-ly on. I’m proud of the way they responded.”

Al Morris had three interceptions for the Brahman JV. Tommy Jackson, Dennis Cum-mings, and Jose Laredo also had picks for the Brahman defense.

On offense, Cade Stokes scored on a one-yard run. Jackson ran in the two point con-version to account for Okeechobee’s points. “They loaded the box on us but we were still able to run the ball decent. Jackson had a couple of big runs for us,” Erwin added.

The defense hit hard and kept the Jaguar offense on the run all night. They controlled the line of scrimmage and were able to make big plays.

“It was a complete turn around from oth-er games. I think we’re headed in the right direction, a lot of these kids are just looking for a chance,” Erwin said.

Okeechobee will play their fi nal game of the season on Monday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m., when they host St. Lucie West Centennial.

OHS JV football team wins game with Port St. Lucie

By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News

The Okeechobee High Schools Brahmans football team has a tough test as they open up their district schedule tonight in Jupiter against William T. Dwyer.

The Panthers (5-1) have ended Okeecho-bee’s season for the past two years, and ap-pear as strong as ever this year. Okeechobee (0-6) is a shadow of the team that played in this game in the past two years.

Dwyer is led by several Division I college prospects like QB Jacoby Brissett, who has accounted for 13 touchdowns, Matthew Elam, 544 yards and six rushing touch-downs, and TE Nick O’Leary, who has four touchdowns. Most of these statistics are modest because most of the time the team’s games are over at half time and these play-ers sit the bench in blowouts.

What will be tough for Okeechobee is Dwyer’s balance on offense. They can run the football and throw the football.

“This is one of those games that I look forward to. Dwyer is a loaded football team. I’ve seen high schools with plenty of talent but no victories. This team is disciplined, this team plays hard, and this team takes coach-ing,” Brahman Coach Myron Jackson said.

Coach Jackson said it will be a challenge for his team to tackle some of the Dwyer skill players. He noted his team won’t be intimi-dated and they will try their best. “If they give us a chance, we’ll stick around and make it a ballgame. You never know what might hap-pen at the end.”

Jackson said Dwyer has a lot of depth and their backups are just as dangerous as the starters. “They also work hard. Credit goes to Coach Jack Daniels and their coach-ing staff. They have found a way to get inside

these young men’s head and unlocked their potential. One of these days I’ll pick his brain and see how he does that.”

Jackson said his team will not just go down there to show up. He said Dwyer hasn’t given up a touchdown in three games and Okeechobee will work hard, throw in some wrinkles, and try to catch the Panthers by surprise. “Maybe we can use some of their speed against them. It won’t be easy for us. We will run what we do, refi ne what we do, and maybe we can catch them by surprise and get an advantage on a play here and there.”

Okeechobee is fairly healthy as Thor Harden and Ronald Jackson will return to the lineup. Harden has been slowed by a knee injury. Also back will be Jose Garcia who was injured against Bartow.

Jackson expects both of his young QBs, D.J. Washington and Jack Radebaugh to see action in the game.

Brahman scouting report: William T. Dwyer

By Charles M. MurphyOkeechobee News

Four Okeechobee High School seniors were honored Wednesday night for their many contributions to the volleyball pro-gram. They added one more contribution that night, a win over South Fork.

Okeechobee (18-8) won their seventh straight match in four games, 25-13, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-19, over the Bulldogs.

Megan Clements, Janezzka Koger, Moni-ca Koger, and Caitlyn Gaucin were honored before the match began with gifts and ac-colades from their teammates. They also got to watch a video of some of their matches, complete with pictures when they were small and just starting in youth volleyball.

“I’m really happy that we got to win it. A tight match keeps the audience here to cheer us on. Some of the best memories I made were with some of my volleyball friends. It’s sad that’s its over with,” Clements said af-terward.

Janezzka Koger said it meant a lot to her to win her senior night game. She said she hopes to keep playing volleyball in college. “I think I’ve improved my game a lot,” she

said. “I sat the bench last year. I’m improv-ing now with more playing time.”

Her cousin Monica Koger played four years for the varsity volleyball team. She noted she watched as other seniors gradu-ated and celebrated their careers. She was surprised that South Fork was so tough, “We came in thinking we beat them at a tourna-ment so we can beat them. They actually put up a good fi ght,” she said. “I’m glad they did, because we didn’t just run over them on senior night.”

Coach Todd Jones was also surprised with how competitive South Fork was. He stated his team defeated the Bulldogs handily ear-lier in the year by playing great defense, and blocking balls at the net. That didn’t happen in this match. Jones also commended his girls for their execution.

“They played really well. They had some good chemistry. I was actually glad not to see the tears. They know the season is not over, there’s still a lot of volleyball to play.”

Okeechobee played at Vero Beach on Thursday night. The district tourna-ment opens on Tuesday at Jensen Beach. Okeechobee will meet Fort Pierce Central in the opening round.

Volleyball seniors go out in style

The Okeechobee High School boys swim team fi nished fourth and the girls fi nished third at the Heartland Invitational at Lake Placid High School Saturday.

Okeechobee once again had a number of strong individual performances. Celena Letcher did well in the breast stroke event. She was just .12 seconds off her school re-cord setting time.

Adrianna Mitchell had a great swim in the 200 free. She fi nished with a time of 2.28.28, which was 25 seconds faster than her previ-ous best.
