fter November 30, 2017, grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) will be on the “no hunt” list for the Great Bear Rainforest, in British Columbia.

For a very long time, hunting has been recognized as one tool in managing bear population and distribution. In fact, bear experts on the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee believe that hunting promotes coexistence and minimizes conflict with humans. The biggest threat to grizzlies in British Columbia was habitat loss from the cumulative effects of human, industrial and commercial encroachment.

Now, however? The real threat to grizzly bears are the humans who have decided that a complete ban on hunting will “save” them. The people of British Columbia have spoken, and decided that hunters are the bigger threat.

“Society has come to the point in B.C. where they are no longer in favor of the grizzly bear trophy hunt,” said BC’s Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson.

How did this happen? The new provincial government appears to want to curry favor, and/or stop the nagging from outspoken anti-hunters who don’t understand or even want to understand the benefits of hunting – economically, biologically and ethically.

Not all of the people spoke up to ban hunting. Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia, with the help of DSC, actively worked to make sure this didn’t happen. Unfortunately, the effort was not successful, largely because, as DSC Interim Executive Director Karl Evans said, “This decision was based on emotion, rather than science. Ultimately, the grizzly bear will be the loser.”

Minister Donaldson has stated that “hunters will no longer be able to possess the hide or head or paws of a grizzly bear” but a sustenance hunt could continue outside the Great Bear Rainforest.

The future of grizzly hunting is unclear at this time, but DSC will continue to fight with its partners in British Columbia for science-based conservation policies and practices. CT

n college (yes, in the 1970s), the small college I attended required students to take religion courses. In the New Testament course, the professor spent a great deal of

time on what is referred to as “apologetics.” The word actually means “verbal defense,” but it has been described as the practice of defending Christian beliefs against critics, along with learning how to discuss and recommend those beliefs to others who may not feel the same way.

Hunting and conservation, are under increasing attack from those who don’t participate in it, don’t understand it and, consequently, don’t feel the same way we do. How do we change how others instinctively feel when the subject of hunting comes up?

That New Testament course decades ago may have the right approach. We engage them, not with counterattacks and insults, but with facts and science. We arm ourselves with knowledge, and share it with all of those who are willing to listen.

In a recent video, Shane Mahoney discusses how critical it is that young people engage in the debate over conservation, no matter what their viewpoints are.

“Their minds aren’t yet calcified by their experiences,” Mahoney said. It is increasingly important that our joint belief in the DSC mission and conservation

be shared with all of those willing to listen. Most non-hunters are receptive to the science of conservation and the role hunting plays in it.

Won’t you help us? Join DSC, learn all you can, talk about hunting and conservation with friends, fellow members, family, co-workers – spread the word that this is important for wildlife in the here and now.

The DSC convention is rapidly approaching. Volunteers are needed, and our next volunteer meeting is scheduled for Oct. 5. Signing up is important, and even better, it’s a lot of fun!

fter an exhaustive search from a qualified pool of applicants, the

search committee recommended Corey Mason for the position of Executive Director of DSC. On August 9, the DSC Board of Directors approved the recommendation, and Mason has accepted the offer.

A Certified Wildlife Biologist®, Mason was Regional Director of Texas Parks and Wildlife in Region 3 since 2012, where he had oversight of 59 staff and 21 wildlife management areas. He began his career with Texas Parks and Wildlife in 2001, and has served in various parts of Texas in different roles. His duties have required him to interact with the public and outdoor media professionals, legislators, universities, private landowners, as well as federal, state and regional agencies.

His Master’s in Science, Wildlife Management, was obtained at Stephen F. Austin State University. He has published peer-reviewed work on several topics ranging from wetlands management to dove population studies. Mason is the current president of the Texas chapter of the Wildlife Society, and has been a member since 1996, and of the national Wildlife Society since 1998.

For a time, Corey guided hunts in Texas and New Mexico for elk, mule deer, aoudad, turkey and quail. His hunting has taken him to the western U.S., Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.

DSC President Craig Nyhus said, “We’re excited to welcome Corey to the DSC family. Many in the outdoor industry already know him, and we are

looking forward to introducing him and his wife, Karyn, to our members and exhibitors.”

Jim Tolson, chair of the search committee, said, “We feel that Corey is the right choice because of his expertise as well as his familiarity with many of the issues in conservation, hunter advocacy and policy, and outdoor education. Plus, he is well-known by many of the conservation partners that DSC already works with.”

Mason said, “As a hunter and wildlife biologist, I am very honored and excited to have been selected. Everyone has been extremely welcoming, and I am eager to meet with our members, and industry and conservation partners to begin tackling the pressing issues.” Mason’s official duties began Sept. 5, 2017. GRANTS IN ACTION

SC Foundation recently granted funds to support

Delta Waterfowl’s breakthrough research using drones with thermal-imaging cameras to locate nesting ducks and other wildlife. The discovery from a pilot test in 2016 led to formal research that could revolutionize the way ducks are studied and surveyed.

Currently, the other methods used to locate nests and study duck populations are time-consuming, expensive and extremely labor-intensive. Nests can be difficult to spot and in hard-to-reach places. The grant will fund Delta Waterfowl studies to assess how drone technology could make this process much easier.

As a whole, the Delta Waterfowl drone studies have many goals, such as finding over-water nesting ducks, monitoring densities of waterfowl predators and detecting the nests of upland-nesting birds like mallards, pintails, teal, pheasants, songbirds and piping plovers.

“Delta Waterfowl’s willingness to commit time and money to study emerging technology with the goal of integrating that technology into waterfowl research is both admirable and exactly the type of forward thinking that wildlife management needs,” said Richard Cheatham, president of the DSC Foundation.

In 2016, a team led by Dr. Frank Rohwer, Delta’s president and chief scientist, performed an initial test-flight using with drones over grassland cover. Rohwer was able to pinpoint nesting ducks indicated by the thermal imaging camera’s heat signature.

“Using drones is innovative, and a potential game-changer. Delta is pleased to have the backing of the DSC Foundation, whose shared goals include supporting science-based research, conserving wildlife and securing the future of hunting in North America,” said Joel Brice, Delta’s vice president of waterfowl and hunter recruitment programs. CONSERVATION NEWS

n late July, a collared lion was tracked and shot by a professional hunter (PH) and his client near Hwange National

Park. The animal was well outside the confines of the park, and was hunted in a fair-chase, ethical manner.

Upon discovering the lion was a research subject, PH Richard Cooke, a DSC member, retrieved the collar plus hair, blood and tissue samples for the researchers. From these valuable specimens, ongoing lion research will provide more information about lion habits, range, and reproduction. Such vital data can then inform the decisions by officials for sustainable use, hunting quotas, etc. The ripple effect of this data could last for years. DSC is proud to be a supporter of these initiatives, through advocacy at the national and

international level, as well as conservation grants through the DSC Foundation.

In a grab for media attention, many outlets are re-hashing attacks on hunters and hunting that occurred when another lion was shot in Zimbabwe in 2015.

DSC President Craig Nyhus said, “A combination of science, policy and common sense creates the best possible scenario for the conservation of wildlife. Hunting is a vital part of that equation.”

DSC Interim Executive Director Karl Evans said, “Following one line of thinking, jumping to conclusions, and overreacting to headlines have not saved one lion. Not one. None.”

In 2013, DSC defined the ideal huntable male lion: That lion “is at least six years of age and is not known to be part of a coalition heading a pride

with dependent cubs.” In May of that same year, an international assembly of conservationists representing 84 different countries adopted the African lion hunting policy modeled after that of DSC.

As with any game species in Africa, hunting, as well as the money generated by legal hunting, gives lions a tangible value that is irreplaceable in impoverished rural communities. Over the years, one irrefutable fact has been proven in Africa: when hunting goes away, so does the wildlife.

DSC has developed its policy on the taking of African lions, and is active in funding research and educating the public on the role of legal, ethical hunting and its positive effects on wildlife and conservation issues is a priority of DSC. CT

CLUB NEWS

n late July, DSC hosted the annual New Member Shrimp Boil where new members were invited to learn about our programs, activities, volunteer

opportunities, to meet the board and staff, and have some fun enjoying a feast prepared by our friends from Delta Waterfowl. More than 50 attended, and many new members got fired up for the upcoming convention.

The DSC 100 Kickoff party was held in early August. More than 60 volunteers signed up for convention and S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza committees, filling 115 volunteer slots. The DSC 100 Volunteers are a crucial part of the Greatest Hunters’ Convention on the Planet, as well as the annual Shooting, Archery, and Field Excellency Trials for Youth Extravaganza.

If you weren’t able to join us for the Kickoff, fear not! There will be two more volunteer parties to get signed up. The next one will be held Oct. 5 at the DSC office. The final will be Dec. 7, at a location to be announced.

New this year, as an additional incentive and thanks to our volunteers, there will be exclusive door prizes at our DSC 100 events – be sure to attend so you can be entered to win! CT

It is time once again to reach out to these wonderful children. Happy Hill Farm has requested that we provide gift cards because they are easier to handle and do not necessitate that the names and gifts be matched up, wrapped or checked for appropriateness. Gift cards are the most requested item on their wish lists. This format allows the school to treat the entire student body equally.

Donations can be cash or a check made out to DSC, or you may purchase gift cards from Wal-Mart or Target for $20 or $25. Please be sure to indicate the amount of the gift is somewhere on the card. The Happy Hill Farm angels of DSC will purchase more gift cards with the money we receive.

You may send or drop off your donations to the DSC office any time. We will also collect donations at the monthly meetings. We need to have all cards/cash in to DSC by Dec. 10, 2017. This year, we will have about 150 children between the ages of 5-18.

Thank you so much for your donations in the past and again this year. The students at Happy Hill Farm are very appreciative of all we do for them.

For more information, call the office at (972) 980-9800, or email [email protected].

his boarding school offers more than a typical standard education. As son of the founders and current President, Todd Shipman says, “Happy Hill Farm’s

mission is to find high-potential students in low-opportunity situations and raise them up to be future leaders with compassion for others.”

To produce leaders with character that are ready to give back to society and lift the next generation out of poverty, Happy Hill Farm deals with the mind, the body, and the heart. They gather bright and talented students from underprivileged backgrounds, showing them a safe environment with adults who support them and encourage them to dream big through a strong education and solid character building amongst a diverse student body.

Ed and Gloria Shipman founded the boarding school on Happy Hill Farm to provide a safe, secure home for underprivileged boys and girls, and a superior education. Including the mix of local students from the surrounding areas and international students, 85 percent of students are on scholarship.

Without any local, state, or federal funding, the dedicated operations run thanks to caring donors. DSC members play a part each by giving donations for gift cards during the Christmas season. CT

CONVENTION NEWS

o some, the Weatherby Award is the ultimate prize, the crown jewel,

the “Oscars” of hunting. To those few men and ladies who have achieved the title of “winner” it means countless hours logged sitting on planes, getting into the field, the blind, the machan, sitting on that cold rock, waiting for the prey. A guide spots an animal, but too far for the shot. Eleven days later, still no sign of the elusive game. It’s time to leave and hope the outfitter has a spot open for the next season. It means trudging up mountains, wading in streams, and then hearing through the bush telegraph that a very lucky individual shot his prey on the first morning out. But the sheer determination pushes them to book that next season, sit on another 23-hour plane ride and then another six-hour drive to camp, hoping this time they find that quarry.

For some, age, finances, and physical limitations might prevent hunters from even qualifying for such a prestigious award, yet they too still book that flight, sit on a plane for countless hours to trudge through swamps, battle tsetse flies and the like. Why? Because each time hunters step out into the wild, they are reminded of the great passion

we have for the outdoors – for the world’s wild places – and that we are the standard-bearer for hunting and conservation. This band of brothers and sisters have a responsibility to give back. And while The Weatherby Award might seem unattainable for most of us, the spirit of the award is something each of us carries.

As fall approaches, you can feel an excitement in the air, knowing that soon the shotguns come out for dove season, the quail and pheasant hunts are booked, and the duck blind awaits. The massive buck that eluded you last year will be hunted again, and the campfires will be full of laughter and great stories.

That spirit of hunting that is in each of us is celebrated every January. Yes, the evening is surely about the winner, but it is also a time to reflect, to see old friends, and to share pictures and

stories. This evening is about honoring that spirit within all of us who are hunters and conservationists.

Will you please join us this January as we celebrate the accomplishments of a well-deserved honor? As you enjoy the evening’s events and hear the accomplishments of this year’s winner, you can also reflect on your past hunts and the sheer delight of being in the field again.

We welcome your presence and have a seat waiting. Join us for a night of celebrating and raising funds for conservation. It is a night to recognize our responsibility to educate the next generation. We are proud of our affiliation with a variety of conservation groups – including Sportsmen’s Alliance, No Child Left Indoors, Student Air Rifle Program, Youth Village, and the Rosenbruch Wildlife Museum – who specialize in helping fulfill our mission: To educate youth and the non-hunting public on the beneficial role of ethical sport hunting and its contribution to wildlife conservation.

Your participation helps us to continue to be able to support these dedicated organizations.

It will be a night to remember! CT

he DSC Heartland Chapter is a group of people from all walks of life that have come together with like-minded beliefs, opinions and values when it comes to the

future in the outdoors. We know that two things need to happen. We must first give any kid that wants to experience the outdoors the opportunity to do so. Whether it be in the form of fishing, camping, hiking, biking, hunting, photography, bird watching or whatever other aspirations they have, we need to see that they get that chance.

One of the kids that we provide an outdoor opportunity to just might be the one kid that grows up to run this country and keep the outdoors alive for all of us to enjoy. Even the worst case, we have put a huge smile on a young face and given them one of the best days they have ever had. Every one of you reading this article now would not be doing so if it was not for someone taking you to experience the outdoors for your first time. We all owe our passion for the outdoors to someone and that someone was the person that thought of us over themselves. Heartland’s initiative “Getting Youth Outdoors” will continue this legacy.

Secondly, while we are a chapter of Dallas Safari Club, we are also a part of a larger hunting family of many organizations throughout the world, We all have one main goal. That goal is to keep hunting alive and to preserve our right to enjoy the outdoors. We feel it is important to work with other outdoors organizations to support each other instead of trying to outdo each other. Competition creates friction where teamwork produces results. For example, one of Heartland DSC’s goals is to raise money ($20,000, to be precise) to purchase an Action Track mobility chair so that we can make the outdoors accessible for kids of all physical abilities and or disabilities. With that being said along with our focus on teamwork, we would make the Action Track chair accessible to other hunting groups and organizations such as the local Wild Turkey Federation, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, or Whitetails Unlimited, for example.

Heartland DSC is very new as far as chapters go. On July 20, 2017 we received our 501(c)(3) status and incorporated in the state of Iowa. While new, we have been very busy the last few months promoting our goal to get youth outdoors, with three successful summer events.

• In June, we held a youth fishing clinic and bow fishing tournament, with 34 kids in attendance. For many of them it was their first experience fishing. While everyone received donated door prizes, new rods and reels were awarded for the biggest fish in a number of different species. For the bow fishing tournament, there were 14 competitors, and 17-year-old Wyatt won the grand prize − a two-day, two-person alligator gar bow fishing trip in Texas. Good luck and enjoy, Wyatt!

• Big Oak Archery in Glenwood, Iowa hosted our youth archery clinic in July. Participants ranged from several who had never shot a bow to kids that shoot at a tournament level. They were all taught safety fundamentals and finished the day with a fun shoot during which they shot balloons. Prizes ranged from hunting videos to stands for their bows.

• Also in July, one of our founding members, Kim Gibson and family, opened their family retreat and trophy lodge for Heartland DSC to host our first Annual Membership Drive. Children were invited to fish at their beautiful ponds. All the kids caught fish ranging from catfish to bluegill and even largemouth bass. Kim and family provided all the food and refreshments for this free event. In all, 39 adults and 14 kids attended the event, and 17 new members joined during the event, including one life member and a three year membership. CT

Campaign

uman-wildlife encounters flood news outlets around the world almost every day. Wild animals attack

unsuspecting pets in the backyard, havoc breaks out at a wildlife park or dangerous animals attack villagers in Africa. One week, someone may spot a dangerous animal doing something cute, but the next week, that animal could be the cause of fatal injuries.

• In Thailand, monks at the Wat Luang Phor Lamai Temple allow tourists to feed bears that they keep in enclosures. One man teased a bear with some food, but in response, the bear brutally pulled the man himself down into the enclosure. The rest of the visitors tried to divert the bear’s attention as the animal tore at the man’s flesh and dragged him around the enclosure. Eventually, friends pulled the man out of the enclosure after another person hit the bear with a pole. The man was hospitalized with severe injuries.

• Sometimes, animal encounters border on the comical. In Australia, a kangaroo attacked a woman on a golf course. She had tried to divert the animal after it appeared to seek out another golfer. Protecting herself with the 7-iron, the kangaroo was able to reach her after she tripped. The unfortunate encounter left her with six stiches before she could be released from the hospital.

While the following didn’t end with a hospital visit, either of these encounters could have gone wrong at any moment.

• A group of people floating down the Missouri River briefly saw an animal in the water with them. An otter ended up deflating one tube and biting a floater without any major injuries.

• Hikers on a trail in California recorded a mountain lion staring back at them. Eventually the mountain lion retreated and the hikers continued on. CT

LAW ENFORCEMENT NEWS

n August 1, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department graduated

the 61st Texas Game Warden and State Park Police officer cadet class. The class included 34 game wardens and seven state park police officers, for a total of 41 new peace officers.

The seven-month preparation takes place at the Game Warden Training Center in Hamilton County, where training has taken place since 2009. All graduates met the state-mandated requirements for peace officer certification, including criminal and constitutional law, firearms, self-defense, use of force, defensive driving, arrest, search and seizure, ethics and first aid.

Game wardens are pledged to enforce all laws, with their primary focus on conservation law enforcement, assuring that future generations of Texans enjoy the same abundant bounty of game and fish across the diverse and rich land, air and water of the state.

If we agree that Roosevelt’s words have an undeniable and lasting truth, then are

hunters losing battle after battle? Why have we been so ineffective at explaining the wisdom of Roosevelt’s words?

We lose ground for several reasons. We let others define what we do and let them demean it in the process. Why do we stand by quietly when others use “trophy” as a pejorative? We fight amongst ourselves – the “meat hunter” vs. “trophy hunter” argument is specious and silly. We shoot ourselves in the foot. We are reluctant to call out those among us who bring dishonor to hunting. We allow ourselves to be filmed or photographed in ways that are disrespectful to our quarry, knowing that such images will be held against us, and not just by the rabid anti-hunting faction. You know the differences between respectful photographs and the cringe-inducing pictures when you see them. Finally, we just aren’t very good at telling our story.

The reality is that most of us grew up in the pre-internet era and, more specifically, pre-social media. The Monday morning

armchair quarterback who used to call in to the local AM radio station has been replaced by the keyboard activist/social justice warrior who wouldn’t know the difference between a caribou and a caracal, but thinks he or she knows what’s best for both. We tend to dismiss the potency of those people, but we would be well advised to avoid the temptation to underestimate the power wielded by those uninformed individuals.

Today, public sentiment can change, or at the least be significantly impacted, in a matter of days, if not hours. Lies are accepted as truth. Author Michael Sabbeth quotes Winston Churchill, who said, “A lie will travel halfway around the world before the truth gets out of bed.” Retractions, if any, get buried. Facts are refuted by manufactured evidence. Junk science is a juggernaut industry.

Does it seem that hunters are not even trying to engage? That is all going to change.

We hunt for the adventure that it brings to life. We hunt to feed ourselves and others. We hunt to preserve and protect wildlife and wild places. We hunt so that our children, grandchildren and those who come after them will know of truly wild animals and pristine wilderness. We hunt for the benefits that hunting brings to the people who live and work among wildlife and in wild places.

We Hunt For Life and we’re going to tell anyone who will listen why. CT

In a civilized and cultivated country,

wild animals only continue to exist

at all when preserved by sportsmen.

The excellent people who protest

against all hunting, and consider

sportsmen as enemies of wild life,

are ignorant of the fact that in

reality the genuine sportsman is by

all odds the most important factor

in keeping the larger and more

valuable wild creatures from total

extermination.

RELOADING

In the continuing saga of “Days at the Range,” there is always a new adventure

hiding somewhere. One afternoon, I almost shot a deer.

The range I use is in the woods and has a corridor cleaned up out to 100 yards. As I was squeezing the trigger, a deer stepped out, and I swear there was “hair in scope.” The shot went off, and I thought, whoa, how the heck do I explain this one?

I put the gun down. The deer was nowhere in sight so it must have jumped and/or run behind the backstop of the 50-yard range. As I walked out to check, the deer just stood there, not a hair out of place, and actually had sort of an attitude of how I was interrupting its day. What a relief is the only way to explain the feeling I had as that was way too close for comfort.

As most of my readers know, I’ll dive into about any dumpster if there are empty cases in there, and today was no exception. There was far more than I suspected because it was during the week before deer season so there must have been far more shooters than normal.

The shooters were quite considerate, as many of the shells were put back into their boxes and then tossed in the trash so it was not such a big deal having to sort them all out.

Back at home, I was sorting out the different calibers, and noticed something strange about some 7mm Remington Magnum fired cases. To my eye, that

gun had an extreme excessive headspace problem. I’m sure the shooter was not at all aware of it because as long as the gun goes bang and the shells come out, he’s happy.

These cases were stretched so badly that they were starting to separate just ahead of the belt. I first looked to see if they were all from one brand because it could just be a bad batch of brass, but they were from two different brands so that ruled out the bad brass option.

Now had someone just taken those cases not noticing the partial separation, and reloaded them, I’m quite sure that they would have come apart on the next firing. You can be sure it would have been on a hunt probably at the most inopportune time.

The bottom line here is check and double check all cases before reloading them. One can never be too careful when picking up spent brass at the range.

Another thing to be sure and do with “pick-up” brass is to run it in your case cleaner for a while before resizing it just to be sure to remove any sand or grit. Brass is quite soft, and grit will embed itself easily into the case wall. Even very fine particles could do damage.

That day, there was a fellow who came out to check the zero on his .30-06 Springfield semi-auto, and was having a terrible time getting two or three shots close together.

Since he was to the left of me, his empty

cases were being ejected at or on me, so I picked them up and asked if he wanted them back.

“No, thanks” he replied, I then looked at them and noticed he had both Remington and Winchester cases.

I asked what ammunition he was going to hunt with, and he showed me a nice new box of Federal Premiums. Of course, I asked why he was shooting Winchester and Remington ammo for zero. His answer was that he wanted to clean up a few partial boxes and then use his new stuff for hunting.

“Is it all the same bullet weight?” I asked.

He said, “I think so, but it can’t make much difference at 100 yards anyway” he replied.

I explained to him that everything makes a difference − the manufacturer, bullet weight, bullet type. Even the lot number will make a difference. All he was accomplishing was to be sure his gun went bang.

The moral of the story is to zero your gun with the EXACT ammo you are going to hunt with as that is the only way to be sure the point of impact is right.

In talking to some bench-rest” shooters, I heard this tip. To cool a barrel down quickly, they put a strip of wet cloth on the length of the barrel. The evaporation helps dissipate the heat from the barrel. I tried it and was impressed with how quickly the barrel cooled off. CT
