Offered in a variety of trim andequipment packages, all modelsare available in front-wheel-driveand all-wheel-drive configura-tions. Its safety system includessix standard air bags and a stan-dard StabiliTrak electronic stabili-ty control system for mitigatingrollovers.
With seating for up to eight,there’s ample room for family andfriends. And, despite the vehicle’sSUV-like front-end height, thebody-frame integral structureallows for a lower entry and exitheight. Wide rear doors alsoallow easier entry to the second-and third-row seats as does GM’sexclusive Smart Slide second-rowseat feature.
The vehicle’s responsive per-formance is courtesy of GM’shigh-feature engine, the 3.6L V-6VVT, which offers variable valvetiming designed for good fueleconomy, low emissions andexceptional smoothness. It israted at 275 horsepower andoffers enough power to tow up to4,500 pounds when properlyequipped.
And GM’s electronically con-trolled six-speed automatic trans-mission delivers both perform-ance and fuel economy, enablingup to an 8 percent improved per-formance and up to a 4 percentimproved fuel economy whencompared with current front-
wheel-drive four-speed automat-ics.
But what makes this a dreamvehicle for those who live on theroad are those wonderful littleluxuries that GMC has added toits 2008 models. We’re talkingabout such features as XMSatellite Radio; a rear back-upcamera available on the naviga-tion system that issues an audiblewarning when the driver gets tooclose to objects directly behindthe vehicle; heated outside mir-rors and heated windshieldwasher fluid; a power liftgate thatopens at the touch of a button toaccess the crossover’s generouscargo space; extended rangeremote vehicle start; a dual sun-roof; plus, a flip-down DVD tokeep rear-seat passengers enter-tained.
Also new for 2008 are:• The Panic Brake Assist fea-
ture. When panic braking isdetected, the system automatical-ly develops additional brake pres-sure to more quickly engage theABS, potentially reducing overallstopping distance by eliminatingthe delay caused by not brakinghard enough and/or soonenough.
• The Intelligent AWD system. Itdelivers enhanced drivingdynamics and a more refineddriving experience. The systemtakes AWD performance to thenext level by incorporatingdynamic yaw control and fullyintegrating with the StabiliTrakelectronic stability control system.A target vehicle yaw rate is estab-lished based on driver inputs anddriving conditions. Intelligent
AWD manages the torque distri-bution to maintain the vehicle’starget yaw rate and optimize yawstability. For the driver, this trans-lates into better control and moretraction on snow and gravel.
The 2008 Acadia comes stan-dard with OnStar Generation 7(with a one-year Safe & Sound

ig game hunters planning anAfrican safari might want toadd one of the new RugerM77 Hawkeye rifles and plen-
ty of the .375 Ruger cartridges to theirlist of essential gear.
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc.’s new.375 Ruger cartridge was co-developedwith Hornady Manufacturing, theworld’s largest independent manufac-turer of bullets.
This powerhouse is described bythe Nebraska ammo manufac-turer as a practical, hard-hit-ting cartridge created forlarge and dangerous game.
According to informa-tion from Hornady,although the ammo isslightly larger in diam-eter than the .30-06,it shares the samecase overall length,which means it canbe chambered inany standard lengthaction.
Engineersdesigned the newcartridge with a belt-less case and techno-logically advancedpropellants: the .375Ruger pushes a 270-grainspire point-recoil proof bullet in excessof 2800 fps and the 300-grain bulletsleave the muzzle at 2700 fps.
The cartridge was introduced earlierthis year in three models:

announced. “The shorter-bar-reled Alaskan rifle is the perfect gunwhere quick handling and hard-hittingcartridges are needed, while the Africanrifle will provide the same performancein a classic hunter’s rifle.”
The Ruger M77 Hawkeye bolt-actionrifles provide shooters with such fea-tures as enhanced ergonomics,improved checkering of the walnutstock and the new LC6 trigger for asmooth, crisp trigger pull. An all-newred rubber recoil pad is designed to
absorb the recoil plus the rifle’s steelfloor plate latch allows for easy unload-ing without having to chamber eachcartridge.

oshua Creek Ranch sits amidst ancientoaks in the scenic Texas Hill Country, awelcoming retreat for visitors whowant to partake of plentiful hunting,superb service and stress-free entertain-
ing.Located off IH 10 West, just north of Boerne,
the 1,200-acre game preserve and resort is amesh of wooded hills, creek bottom land andopen fields that are home to bobwhite quail,pheasant, chukar, Hungarian partridge, Axisdeer, whitetail deer and turkey.

Bill Blount of Ohio, who spent the first 39years of his life in San Antonio, first hunted atJoshua Creek Ranch in 2001.
He liked it so much, he’s visited six times. Last February, he and friend Jim Gallegos of
Austin hunted quail, chukar and pheasant.And, although Blount truly loves the wing-
shooting, it’s the first-class treatment, the out-standing amenities and the superb cuisine thatkeep bringing him back.
“They have a chef who cooks a lot of wildgame, and the food is great,” said Blount, whoalso appreciates the ranch’s fine wine selection.

rad Metzler’s business is all abouthelping his customers enhance theirfishing experience on their pondsand lakes.
His background includes graduat-ing from the fisheries program at TexasA&M University in 1995. Shortly after, hestarted his business, Pond King, Inc.
More than a decade later, his companyhas evolved to include the manufacturing ofa wide range of unique products, in additionto offering extensive lake managementservices, including fish stocking.
“I built my business by designing anddeveloping new products,” he said. “Most ofour customers want to go out and spendmore time fishing and less time working onthings.”
Pond King started out building PK FloatingDocks. With the ever-changing levels of Texasponds and lakes, Metzler wanted to build adock that would rise and fall in response andbe maintenance-free. The docks are builtwith all galvanized frames and tubing, com-posite decks and polyethylene encapsulatedfloats. The company offers several standardmodels and will customize options and con-figurations to suit the individual.
The next idea Metzler began working onwas Pond King’s line of mini-pontoon boats.“What customers are looking for are boatsthat can be left out on the water withoutdeteriorating,” he said. With that in mind, hedesigned three all-aluminum mini-pontoonboats. Among the three models available,the Pond King Pro is the mid-size and mostpopular. “It’s big enough to take out to thelocal lake and small enough to back intoyou own small pond. It’s perfect for seriousfishermen that don’t want to spend a for-tune on the latest bass boat,” Metzler said.
With increased demand for the boats,Metzler has geared up to produce themajority of the components in-house, allow-ing for a larger inventory and an increasedproduction rate.
“We now have the ability to build theboats completely on-site; this has basicallydoubled our production capacity. With thisincrease, we can proceed with taking onmore dealerships in the upcoming season,”he said.
Pond King’s latest products are the“Honey Hole Tree” and “The BaitMaker.”These artificial fish habitats are designed toreplace trees or brush in adding structure toponds and lakes. Unlike trees, these twoproducts are made from polyethylene, amaterial that will not deteriorate or rot overtime. It was also designed to be easily fishedthrough. The Honey Hole Tree is ideal fordepths over seven feet, while The BaitMaker
was designed for shallow water.“By placing three or more of the Honey
Hole Trees in a cluster, you provide a com-plex structure for gamefish giving yourself aninstant ‘Honey Hole,’ ” Metzler said.
The BaitMaker is a dome-shaped structurethat helps promote the survival of juvenilefish by providing escape cover and spawninghabitat in shallow water. Both units arestackable and are easily palletized for bulkorders.
Metzler is working on his next product, afloating fish feeder. He plans on having themin production and ready for retail by Februaryof 2008.
“This will be an ideal feeder for the prop-
erty owner who might only visit his or herproperty on the weekends,” he said.
The floating feeder will be built withoutseams and with a simple feeding mechanismand timer. This will put food in the waterconsistently without the hassle of clumpedfood and breakdowns due to a complicatedfeeding mechanism.

n 10 years, GrayThornton led the DallasSafari Club to heights ithad never seen — nor
envisioned. During Thornton’s tenure as
executive director, membershipincreased 500 percent, fundrais-ing net revenues 464 percent,cash reserves 783 percent andgrants to mission programs1000 percent.
Thornton announced hewould vacate his post to con-tribute in new directions to theconservation of the world’swildlife and wild places.Thornton remains to lead theClub’s 2008 convention efforts— his 11th Dallas Safari Clubconvention since taking thehelm of the organization inNovember of 1997.
“When I joined Dallas SafariClub as executive director,”Thornton said, “I set personalgoals for its organizational andconvention growth and recog-nition within the conservationcommunity. I take great pridethat through the dedication andhard work of a core group ofvolunteers, unmatched in theindustry, and dedicated staff,who each contribute at a levelbeyond any other team I haveled, we have accomplished andsurpassed these goals.”
“Gray combines a rare talent
of being an outstanding out-doorsman who has the abilityto promote worthwhile projectsaffecting wildlife and the envi-ronment,” said Dick Hart, a DSCmember and inductee to theTexas Freshwater Fishing Hallof Fame. “He looks like an out-doorsman. He is an outdoors-man. And as an outdoorsman,he has focused his considerable
energy and direction to pre-serve and protect the outdoors.”
“We’ll miss him,” saidThornton’s successor, BenCarter. “And we wish him well.Gray has helped Dallas SafariClub achieve a high place in theindustry, and has positioned usfor even bigger and betterthings.”
Carter is a past president of
DSC, and has been a volunteerfor years. “I appreciate my closerelationship with Gray both as avolunteer and in preparing forthis position,” he said.
Thornton has hunted big andsmall game throughout NorthAmerica, including Alaska; andhe has hunted in Germany,Mexico, New Zealand, and on13 safaris in southern Africa. He

While ona November trip to Africa, afterreceiving the ProfessionalHunters Association of SouthAfrica’s Coenraad VermaakDistinguished Service Award —PHASA’s top honor — Thorntonand his long-time girlfriend,Kelli Sellers, climbed a highAfrican peak. While theyviewed herds of African gamebelow, he placed a fine dia-mond in her hand and pro-posed.
“How could you say no tothat?” Kelli Sellers asked. “Itjust doesn’t get any more per-fect than that.”
Thornton slyly downplayedthe romantic angle. “The dealson diamonds are a lot better inAfrica,” he said.

Since 1996, El Paso-based J.B. Hill BootCompany has been offering high-end hand-made Western boots to its customers.
Company President Dr. James Hill, aretired racehorse veterinarian, says qualityand customer service are the companygoals: “We care about our customers, andare very proud of the boots and belts thatwe make.”
In “The Art of the Boot” (Gibbs Smith, pub-lisher), author Tyler Beard describes his firstencounter with J.B. Hill Boots, as he watchesthe “luscious” samples being pulled out oftheir black bags: “I sat transfixed in astunned state of boot bondage. These bootswere slick as glass, beauteous to behold.”

Customers also can design their own per-sonalized boot.
They can pick the heel style, the type oftoe they prefer and the height of the boots.They also can choose from a variety of col-
ors and skins: including calf, buffalo, alliga-tor, ostrich, lizard, shark and more. J.B. Hillalso provides a service that will build bootsfor customers, utilizing the skins that areharvested on hunts. This is assuming thatthe hides are of good quality and approvedtannage.
Using only the finest leathers and skins,with superb tannage and world-class finish-es, combined with the best findings (insoles,outsoles, heels, cement, shanks and thread)ensures the wearer of many years of comfortand long-lasting beauty.
To assist the company in the fit process, a“fitter boot” that has been built on the com-pany’s clean last will be used to first estab-lish size. They also will require additionalfoot tracings and some measurements. Thefitting process using the fitter boot is toallow customers to put on a J.B. Hill boot,which gives them the opportunity to experi-ence both the fit and quality prior to havinga boot built.
From this starting point, adjustments willbe made.
In difficult-to-fit situations, a custom lastwill be built. And the last will be kept for upto two years for any additional orders.
J.B. Hill welcomes visitors to its El Pasofactory and at trade shows for personalizedfittings. However, a personal visit is not nec-essary to establish the fit. The company willmail the fitter boot directly to the client’shome or office.

While serving 25 yearsin the U.S. Army, Ron wasassigned to the diplomatic corpsin Africa for nine years as well as14 years in Asia and the Pacific.For six of those years, he servedat the American Embassy inHarare, where he assisted theNational Parks in legalizingbowhunting in Zimbabwe.
Since Ron’s retirement fromthe Army in 1992, he has beenbooking hunting safaris intoAfrica.
Ron is one of the few outfitterswho specializes in rifle as well asbowhunting safaris. Bow safarisaccount for about 40 percent ofhis bookings.
“I’m known in the industry forbow hunts,” says Ron, who hasarranged bow safaris for suchwell-known bowhunters as PeteShepley, Chuck Adams, pastpresident of the Dallas SafariClub, and Gary Bogner, past pres-ident of Safari Club International.
Recently, Ron relocated his
business from Florida to Boerne,Texas, because about 80 percentof his clients are Texans.
“And about 60 percent arereturn clients,” says Ron, whoadds that much of his clientele isgenerated by word-of-mouth.
Ron can help arrange a properhunt to maximize the chance ofsuccess for dozens of majorspecies, including the Big 5.
“I have exclusivity on theranches and safari areas wherewe hunt,” he says.
These prime areas include sitesin Zimbabwe (including MatetsiUnit 5 by Victoria Falls), SouthAfrica, Zambia and Namibia.

for the last couple of years. Insome regions in Africa, thosefees have been escalatingsharply.

Redfish Lodge: Fish at every turnecluded on the tip ofRattlesnake Point, a mile-long peninsula minutesfrom Rockport, is the

anglers, this fishing resort is on anarrow strip of land that separatesCopano Bay to the north from PortBay’s unspoiled marsh to thesouth. For fishing enthusiasts, thattranslates into fish at every turn.
Depending on the time of year,anglers can expect to find redfish,speckled trout, flounder and drumin the 6-inch to 6-foot shallowsthat make up the surrounding baysystems.
The resort’s owner, Jim Conklin,says the Redfish Lodge is more thangreat fishing. It also offers luxuri-ous accommodations, gourmet cui-sine and unique geography.
“The location and geography arekey, said lodge manager BrianHolden. “They lend themselves todoing what we do.”
Since Conklin opened the resortin 1992, it has grown tremendous-ly. Now overseen by his daughter,Melissa Rogers, the lodge was visit-ed by 300 guests in its first year ofoperation. Last year, the resorthosted 4,800 guests.
“Eighty-five percent are repeatcustomers,” said Holden, who hasbeen with the lodge since itopened.
The fishing resort’s busy season isMarch 1 through Thanksgiving.
The majority of its visitors are cor-porate clients brought in by Texas-based corporations to enjoy whatthe state has to offer. However, theRedfish Lodge also offers specials forfamilies and small groups.
Guests can stay in either the MainLodge or the recently completedRuddy Lodge, which caters to smallgroups who want privacy.
The Main Lodge can accommo-date up to 18 guests in its ninerooms. It offers a spacious loungewith double fireplace and bar, a cardroom with TV and video library,and a game room. Guests can alsorelax in the lighted swimming poolor on the deck’s hot tub.
The 3,700-square-foot RuddyLodge has its own dedicated staff,including a chef. The private lodgehas four bedrooms and can accom-modate up to eight guests. If offers agreat room with lounge, bar, diningarea, fireplace and entertainmentcenter. An upstairs lounge has a bil-liards table and games area.
The Redfish Lodge’s rates start at(per person/double occupancy)$1,080 for a guided bay two-dayfishing package.

Anglers should pack a hat, sun-glasses and sunscreen. “We haveeverything else, including top-notch gear,” said Holden, who fre-quently will take guests out on thewater in one of the resort’s fleet ofpoling skiffs or bay boats.
“Our days are as long as you wantthem to be. We start at the crack ofdawn,” he said. Most guests usuallyfish for 6 to 8 hours per day.
However, the resort also has sta-dium lights on the beach and alighted pier for nighttime fishing,as well as a fleet of kayaks for anevening stalk of the nearby shal-low-water marsh.
Guests who opt not to fish can
immerse themselves in the naturalbeauty of the resort and observeshore birds, including spoonbillsand herons. They can visit the beach;practice their skills on the puttinggreens; or head into Rockport’s artmuseums and shops. Nearby AransasNational Wildlife Refuge, which isthe winter home to the whoopingcrane, also offers a great opportunity

A growing number of people are heading to thecountry to buy land, and most of them are lookingfor a place where they can enjoy their favorite pas-time. Hunters account for a large share of recre-ational land buyers, but other diverse interestsrange from fishing and weekend ranching towildlife photography and hiking.
This news comes as no surprise to the lendingspecialists at Capital Farm Credit, the state’s largestrural lender. They have witnessed the trend first-hand.
“We’ve seen a huge increase in the number ofpeople buying land for recreation, so much so thatit has become the primary driving factor for landvalues in many areas,” said Ben Novosad, CapitalFarm Credit’s chief executive officer.

“Many new land buyers view real estate as atangible investment asset with a reasonable expec-tation of return that their family can enjoy while itappreciates,” Stewart said. “It’s kind of hard toenjoy a stock certificate or mutual funds, but withland you can get out and do the things you enjoy.”
The lending cooperative also reports an upswingin the number of city-dwellers owning land in thecountry.
“Some of our customers are planning to leavethe city behind and move to the country full-time,”Novosad said. “But an equal number just want aplace to go on the weekends. We can help both.”
