“Bring Joy to the World”

‘‘The history [of Operation Santa Claus] is a most honorable one, reflecting most creditably on those who over the years have given so generously of their time to organising this splendid effort, and equally to those who donated their wealth great or small to supporting it.’’
The theme chosen for 2013’s Operation Santa Claus (OSC 2013) was
“Bring Joy to the World”. Held between Monday, 11 November 2013 –
Friday, 17 January 2014, the campaign – OSC’s 26th – was a great success,
attracting 29 major corporate donors who joined forces with the
Territory’s most compassionate individuals and raised a record
HK$21,098,533 for 18 worthy local causes. This brings almost HK$211
million that OSC and its donors have raised for around 194 projects since
it received its first donation back in 1988.
The opening ceremony for OSC 2013 was held on Monday, 11 November
2013 at the Maritime Museum with leading local actress and singer Niki
Chow as Ambassador and Mrs. Regina Leung, wife of Hong Kong’s Chief
Executive, the Hon. Leung Chun-ying GBM, GBS, JP, as Honorary Patron.
This year’s closing ceremony was held on Friday, 17 January 2014 at the
Grand Hyatt, Wan Chai who kindly donated the cost of the food, drinks
and venue.

‘‘ It is very important to shed light on the less fortunate in the community. We have a social responsibility to report on those issues so more people can be aware of them, and also to pay tribute to the great work done by the charities, as well as the many companies and individuals who have participated.’’

‘‘People were saying, ‘You can’t imagine how important the publicity is for us (OSC beneficiaries), it’s just as important as the money. It helps us build relationships with the donors; it helps us in raising funds in the years to come’’
12
As in previous years, management and staff at both the
South China Morning Post and RTHK did their utmost to extend
OSC’s impact and reach. In addition to extensive coverage of
OSC 2013’s Opening and Closing ceremonies, both media
operations helped increase awareness of the various
beneficiaries by co-ordinating interviews and feature stories.
Additional media used this year included dedicated OSC 2013
websites (osc.scmp.com and rthk.hk/special/osc2013) and a
Facebook Page. Still further coverage of schools’ activities came
on the pages of Young Post. Also helping to spread the OSC 2013
word to all four corners of Hong Kong were around 120
prominently located OSC billboards, bus shelter ads and a
lightbox outside the SCMP’s Leighton Road office in Causeway
Bay. Thanks must also go leading local media titles such as
Cosmopolitan, CosmoGIRL!, HK Mag and Education Post for
generously donating free pages for OSC ads.

Joshua is a child with Prader Willi Syndrome, which affects his ability to control his
hunger and occasionally his moods, and as such, he is constantly seeking out food.
However, his mother has noticed that when he is distracted by things that entertain
and engage him, he becomes less focused on finding food. He enjoyed the Art In
Your Life Program that was run at Jockey Club Sarah Roe School last year
immensely. The mixture of art, yoga and other activities saw him leave school on
the mornings of each class chatting away about his class that afternoon!
The OSC funded program – Art In Your Life has provided both a learning
opportunity and a source of excitement that has taken Joshua’s attention away
from food, for which his mother was very thankful. As Joshua does in most
situations, he flaunted his large personality in the new group setting and was the
first to put his hand up for activities and to lend a helping hand to other students!
In one of the lessons involving music, he jumped up to help play the drums.
It was truly a wonderful experience for Josh which he still talks about and asks
when he will be doing it again.

Over the past six years, rain or shine, Wu Wan Tat
visits the Lions Kidney Center for haemodialysis
treatment. He was with other patients of
end-stage kidney disease to undergo the
five-hour blood-cleaning process twice a week.
Being on haemodialysis is hard to cope with
because the process limits his movement.
There were times when unusual conditions happen to patients during dialysis. Some experience unstable blood pressure,
irregular pulse, vomiting, or even cramps. Nurses and doctors of the clinic offer their support and sympathy to help them to
get through the rough stages.
Since Wu has spent many hours attached to a dialysis machine in the centre, he made a lot of special friends. They share their
experiences and comfort each other, and learned to live with the disease and treatment.
Wu is thankful for the help of Lions Kidney Center as it provides affordable and high quality dialysis for end-stage renal patients.
The treatment keeps them alive.
Note: Haemodialysis is a process to remove waste products, extra chemicals and fluid from blood. It’s a life-saving treatment
for patients with kidney failure.

When a new school year began in September 2013,
Tommy, a S5 student, returned to school after a
one-year interval in hospital. One year after surgery,
he still endured wound pain, leading to his belief
that he had little chance of becoming a policeman
or fireman as he had wished. What made it worse
was that with both his parents suffering from diseases too, Tommy had to handle everything without much family support. He once
revealed to Patricia, programme mentor of TUF, that he could not see a bright future for himself or find the motivation to study.
Pat began to establish a rapport and developed a mentorship with Tommy. She saw Tommy’s needs to adopt a more positive attitude
toward life and improved his learning attitude. During intensive one-on-one sessions, Pat offered him the needed English learning
support and took the time to talk to him. Pat encouraged him to imagine and articulate his dream, always emphasising on hopeful
possibilities based on his current efforts. “Only if you work hard can you empower yourself to pursue your ideal life,” Pat affirmed.
Tommy has become more motivated and positive. He is the only student who has set a record of full attendance in small-group
English session. Recently, he started a new habit of reading elementary English story books and writing book reports. What is
even more impressive is that he has joined the school’s inter-house Spelling Bee competition, for which he has to learn various
new words beforehand. “It isn’t an easy task but I’ll try my best,” Tommy said.

Little Guo is recovering from the cleft surgery
Guo Yuwei was born with a severe cleft lip
Guo Yuwei BeneficiaryOperation Smile - China Medical Mission
Guo Yuwei was born into a farmer’s family in a remote village in Lincang, Yunnan.
It was supposed to be the happiest moment for his parents to welcome their
first-born but they were greatly disturbed by the fact that their son was born with
a severe cleft lip and cleft palate.
In Guo’s first few months, he had trouble sucking milk that his mother had to feed
him with a spoon but still, milk would come out from the nose and cause choking,
so that he didn’t manage to get good nutrition. Though living on a tight budget, his
family went all the way to seek medical assistance. Learning of the unbearably
high cost of surgery and post-surgery follow up, they were almost defeated. Hope
came in the form of Operation Smile to Lincang, where he was able to receive free
surgery to repair his cleft deformity. After the surgery, the stress and desperation
that previously lined the faces of his parents were replaced with pure joy, and they
could not keep their eyes off his beautiful restored smile.”
Having his cleft lip and palate repaired, little Yuwei is living an ordinary life in his
hometown wearing a big smile day and night. He is an energetic, loving child, who
enjoys school. Instead of being isolated and made fun of by his peers, he has made
many friends. His life has been miraculously transformed, thanks to cleft surgery.

‘‘When we explained OSC’s aims in our different events and spoke about the charities being supported, people were very generous… Our team hopes to continue with charity work; we see this as just a beginning’’
23
The call for proposals for funding got underway on 1st June 2013 with an ad
in the SCMP and via OSC’s charity advisor – the Hong Kong Council of Social
Services.
By the 5 July 2013 closing date, some 83 applications had been submitted to
an 8-person Selection Committee from the SCMP, RTHK, OSC, representatives
from the OSC major donors – Morgan Stanley, UBS and the Hong Kong
Council of Social Services.
As in previous years, key selection criteria included:
• Project theme
• Project sustainability
• Economic feasibility
• Number of beneficiaries
• List of tangible materials/results and deliveries
Selection priority of OSC was given to smaller organisations with less
fundraising ability, the history of receiving OSC funding, organisations with
sound management and a high level of transparency.
The 18 charities across five areas (Children & Youth, Community, Elderly,
Medical Issues and Mental & Physical Disabilities) were finally selected by
the committee. Project details are listed on page 24.

carried over from previous years. OSC 2013 also noted an increase in overall
donations which rose 18% from HK$18.6 million to HK$22 million. As in
previous years, overheads and administration costs were kept to a minimum
in order to maximise the effectiveness of people’s kindness.
