Since the beginning of man kind- for a variety of reasons- people have

had to find a way to mate. Biologically speaking- it’s a human responsibility to procreate and continue the survival of our species. Emotionally speaking- it’s wonderful to have someone to share your world with and no one wants to be lonely. Practically speaking- joint tax returns rock. And sexually speaking- celibacy does not. Time once was, a guy could notice a hot little fur clad mama from across the way, hit her over the head and drag her by the hair back to his cave. Times have changed. Try something like that now and the only warm body you will find yourself cozying up to will belong to leroy- your cell mate slash hus-band. Don’t get me wrong- we’re still using clubs, just not the same kind as our slope-headed ancestors. Now we use singles clubs, dance clubs, karaoke clubs, wine clubs and even the occa-sional turkey club…that last one is more for a different kind of hunger though. It’s hard man! Forget the difficulty of actually being in a relationship. Most of us are failing just trying to find some-one to STArT a relationship with. it’s 90’s technology, and some say Al gore brought us the internet. Sud-denly the world was connected and chat rooms were born. Virtually over night the planet seemingly became a bit small-er and everyone on it was just a little less out of reach. By the end of the decade cable modems provided more speed and made the net a very convenient place to spend lots and lots of time. Then with the new millennium came a different kind of club all together and a new way to find potential mates…online dating sites. In the interest of scientific explora-

tion and my own romantic salvation, i decided to try out a few of these sites and report my findings. I put myself out there on Myspace, Yahoo, E-Harmony, Match, Face Book and Plenty of Fish. i threw myself into my work, and af-ter months of hunting through profiles, fielding emails and even going on dates, i have learned quite a lot about this unique sub-culture. The majority of the sites out there are pretty much the same with slight variations. The idea is simple. You look through pictures of other people on the site. When you find one attractive you click on the picture and read their pro-file. If you are still interested you can send them a message and attempt to make contact. Myspace and Face Book aren’t nec-essarily dating sites, but are commonly used as such. The upside is that you have the freedom to socialize with people from virtually any age, race, gender or location. The downside is- you are left to your own devises and imagination. Yahoo and Plenty of Fish let you customize searches to narrow down the list of candidates. really they all do this, but Plenty of Fish especially shines here with more creative avenues of search strings than the others- like the “girls you think are hot” search or the “profiles that haven’t received emails” search. E-Harmony and Match give you ex-tensive personality tests to help match you up with compatible mates. They actually do a pretty good job as long as you don’t mind what your “soul mate” looks like or the fact that they might live on the other side of the world. No matter what site you pick, how-ever, or how many great attributes they have, there is always one fatal flaw in the system. The whole thing depends on

the honesty of people. There is a trust issue here that is impossible to get around. You have to be able to trust the fact that you are really talking to a thirty year old blonde named Harmony and not a forty-five year old plumber named Harry. The problem is, too often people don’t have enough faith in their true selves to be completely honest. Profiles get beefed up, pictures are stretched and photo-shop-ed. From my own experiences, when i actually met the people i talked to, they were vastly different than their profiles at least three fourths of the time. Through various interviews i learned this is a very common scenario. Another problem is the attitude of the participants. There is a certain level of power that comes with the ano-nymity the internet offers, and it gets abused on all sides. Men complain about only finding women, fed up with the real world dating scene, who will only accept their idea of perfection and shun all others. The women i talked to complained about self perceived players who send ridicu-lous shirtless pictures and suggestive emails to girls ex-pecting a positive response. instead of an alternative to late night bars, these sites

have become the exact same thing. The liquid courage of alcohol is replaced with the anonymous vantage point of a computer screen. The only real difference is you don’t have the one on one benefit of body language and instant, honest response. So can online dating work? There are definite obsta-cles to overcome, but i think it can. it’s a much rarer event than the commercials will have you believe though. go into it with a sense of fun and zero expectations and who knows…maybe it’s worth a shot. Personality tests, com-patibility profiles, ice-breaker emails…in the end it’s all about chemistry and there is no fail safe scientific method that can tell you who you will feel that connection with. The best you can do is put yourself in the game and hope for gold.

Matt is back in the dating-game with all its pleasures and pains. If you meet him or talk to him, don’t worry - your identity will be always protected. If you want to converse with Matt or just give him a piece of your mind, you can e-mail him at [email protected].

Daryl Hall and John Oates, the most successful duo in rock history are together again! Well,

they never really officially broke up, they just took a hiatus. Hall & Oates are a pop music duo who achieved its greatest fame in the late 1970s and early to mid-1980s. They specialized in a fusion of rock and roll and rhythm and blues styles, which they dubbed “rock and soul.” They are best known for their six #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “rich girl,” “kiss on My list,” “Private Eyes,” “i Can’t go for That (No Can Do),” “Maneater”, and “Out of Touch,” as well as many other songs which charted in the Top 40. They have sold 60 millon albums worldwide. in 1997, realizing the direction that the music industry was headed, Daryl and John released Marigold Sky on their own label. Taking a break to work on solo projects, the duo would not record and release new material until 2002’s critically acclaimed Do It for Love. The album’s title song went to # 1 on the Billboard and r&r’s Adult Contempo-rary charts and remained there for 4 consecutive weeks. Their latest album, Our Kind Of Soul, featured timeless classics as well as new material that was borrowed from their Philadelphia roots. Their trademark sound of rock ‘n’ soul can be heard in the harmonies of today’s young pop stars, in the return to radio of sophisticated r & B, even in the black/white demographics of hip-hop and rap-rock fusion. Daryl Hall & John OatesLarry Coryell is a famous jazz guitarist playing big events all over the world, usually stadium-size venues. The reason why you can see and hear this legend in a cosier more intimate setting is because Coryell lives close by, in Vero Beach. This is a jazz treat like no other. Larry will be backed up by the Ron Teixeira Trio, Brevard’s top notch.

Coryell was born in galveston, Texas. After graduating from richland High School in eastern Washington, he moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. in 1965, Coryell moved to New York City where he became part of Chico Hamilton’s quintet, replacing gabor Szabo. in 1967 and 1968, he recorded with gary Burton and Jim Pepper. His music during the late-1960s and early-1970s combined the influences of rock, jazz and eastern music. He formed his own group, The Eleventh House, in 1973. Following the break-up of this band, Coryell played mainly acoustic guitar, but returned to electric guitar later in the 1980s. in 1979, Coryell formed “The guitar Trio” with jazz fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. The group toured Europe briefly, eventually releasing a video recorded at royal Albert Hall in london entitled “Meeting of Spirits”. With over 60 recordings under his belt, larry continues to be a groundbreaking force in the guitar world. Among others, he has performed with Eric Clapton, Chick Corea, Albert Dailey, Jimi Hendrix, Paco de lucia, John Mclaughlin, Billy Cobham, keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, and many more. May 2 At Silver Spurs Arena, Kissimmee:

The Beach Boys

Well, they are not exactly boys anymore, but the surf is still up and the girls are still pretty.

Even more than the Beatles, The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth - and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play - it’s where life is renewed and made whole again.

Happily for us all, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut 40 years ago. And in 2006, their latest Capitol records release, Sounds of Summer (RIAA certified double platinum with over two million in sales and climbing), marked a resurgence in Beach Boys in-terest that has again rocked the world. The album ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans and stirred a tempest that rocked the music world. Mike love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwrit-ers. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “i get Around,” “Help Me rhonda,” “Califor-nia girls” and the grammy nominated “good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping “kokomo.” The Beach Boys 2009 are founding member Mike love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-veteran Bruce Johnston (vo-cals/keyboards), who joined The Beach Boys in 1965, re-placing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Other members are Christian love (guitar/vocals), randell kirsch (bass/vo-cals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.

April 8 At The King Center, Melbourne:

Chicago

Chicago is one of the most successful, best loved bands in rock and roll. With twenty Top 10

singles and sales of over 120 million records, their distinct sound has rocked the music world for over 40 years. Their musical fusion of rock and roll with horns has given their multi-generational audiences such hits as “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday in the Park,” and “if You leave Me Now.”

in 1967, Chicago musicians Walter Parazaider, Terry kath, Danny Seraphine, lee loughnane, James Pankow, robert lamm, and Peter Cetera formed a group with one dream, to integrate all the musical diversity from their be-loved city and weave a new sound, a rock ‘n’ roll band with horns. Despite personnel changes over the years, the group keeps active four decades after its founding. They are one of the few major rock groups that has never broken up or even taken an extended hiatus. And four of the six surviving founding members (major songwriters lamm and Pankow, plus loughnane and Parazaider) remain to this day provid-ing continuity, while Bill Champlin has put in over 25 years with the band, Jason Scheff over 20, Tris imboden over 15 and keith Howland has logged over 13. The year 2008 saw the official release of the dynamic Stone of Sisyphus album by rhino records, recorded in 1993 and which had been originally slated for a March 1994 release until being shelved by Warner records. The album contains eleven of the original twelve tracks (the raucous “get on This” was left off), plus four demo record-ings.

Accomplished singer/songwriter karla Bonoff is no stranger to the

music industry. revered by her peers, her roots run deep with lA’s major art-ists and songwriters. Her songs have graced the albums of legendary per-formers linda ronstadt (“Someone To lay Down Beside Me”) and Wynon-na Judd (“Tell Me Why”). karla has toured with Bonnie raitt, John Prine, and opened tours for James Taylor and Jackson Browne. Her song “All My life”, a duet sung by linda ronstadt and Aaron Neville, won a grammy for “Best Vocal Performance by a Duo or group” and was ranked by People Magazine as one of the top 5 most popular wedding songs. in a review by Billboard Magazine, karla’s legacy as a performer and writer was summed up: “long before Alanis and Jewel, there was a breed of singer/songwrit-ers whose earthly anthems of soul-searching, heartache and joy touched souls in a way few can muster today.” in 2007, karla released a live dou-ble CD, a project she had talked about for years. “i think many of these songs have improved with age and and i have never really documented what we do.” karla recorded all but one song of it at a small club in Santa Barbara with her long time touring band, kenny Edwards and Nina gerber, plus Scott Babcock on percussion. karla will perform at the king Center’s Studio Theatre at 9:30 pm for a general audience. Dickey Betts

Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Dickey Betts’s early experience

was leading a band called The Second Coming, before he and other Flori-da area musicians met, jammed, and formed The Allman Brothers Band in 1969. Betts was the band’s second lead guitarist, behind Duane Allman, and contributed significantly to their trade-mark dual lead guitar sound. He also wrote songs including “in Memory of Elizabeth reed” and “Blue Sky” that became radio and concert staples. After the death of Duane Allman in late 1971, Betts became the band’s sole guitarist, and also took on a greater singing and leadership role. He went on to write such Southern rock classics as “Jessica”, and the Allmans’ biggest commercial hit, “ramblin’ Man”. Betts’s first solo album,HighwayCall, was released in 1974, and featured thelatefiddleplayerVassarClements. After the Allmans fell apart in 1976, Betts released more albums, starting with Dickey Betts & Great Southern in 1977, which featured the hit “Bougain-villea,” which he co-wrote with actor Don Johnson. There were several reunion with the Allman Brothers Band until the fi-nal separation in the year 2000. Betts quickly formed the Dickey Betts Band and toured that summer. He now tours under the name Dickey Betts & Great Southern, which has recently added Dickey’s son, Duane Betts, on lead guitar. Dickey Betts was ranked #58 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2003.

MAF-Entertainment

INSIDERBy Tina Eno Suiter, Melbourne Art Festival, 2009 Festival VP

This month I’d like to focus on the entertainment line-up for the 25th Annual Melbourne Art Festival. I’ve

been a volunteer on the festival committee for 19 years. I currently serve as Vice President and work on the enter-tainment committee. Our committee consists of Linda Castelli, Jessana DeAngelis and myself with great counsel from Mark Vanstrum. Together, we select and book the bands and work the stage all weekend. it seems appropriate on this, our 25th year, to offer an insider’s perspective on entertainment programming. This is a family oriented Festival and we are programming for a variety of ages and tastes. A huge factor in booking is bud-get and folks, we don’t have much of one. That is because the Melbourne Art Festival is first and foremost, a fine art show. Entertainment is an added feature, as are so many other side events like the 5k run or our kidsWorld area. The budget set by our Board of Directors prevents us from booking say, Jimmy Buffett. That fact has actually turned out to be a benefit. We have had Grammy award winners like Marty raybon (formerly of Shenandoah) and rodney Crowell. We’ve presented lee roy Parnell, Junior Brown and Pat Travers. We’ve introduced acts like Trish Murphy, Celtic Soul, Americana artist grayson Capp, blue-grass artist Chris Jones and Amber leigh, the south Florida country fiddle player/singer who is being looked at by la-bels. With the advent of Satellite radio and obviously the internet, more and more Indie artists are finding their way to the grammys and to increased music sales. radio repre-sents so little of the world of music. We like to dig deeper and find the treasures and bring them to Melbourne. Bot-tom line – you may not have heard of any of the performers we’re featuring. And that’s ok. More than ok – it is good. We feel it is our job to introduce new “art”. To date, we have steered clear of classic bands that tour with say, one origi-nal member of the band. This isn’t to say that things won’t change. The beauty of the Melbourne Art Festival is that new volunteers come and go. And each year, someone new puts their energy into the mix. You never know what the future will bring. So with that little intro, let’s take a look at the mix of local, regional and national acts that will be on stage this year. Some are coming from Nashville, one from Penn-sylvania and one is heading our way from the Uk. Some come from Palm Bay, Melbourne and Vero Beach too. The music begins each day at noon.

Janet Reedy A local favorite, Janet reedy (photo right) is known for her great guitar playing and dynamic voice. She’s been performing around Brevard County for several years, as a solo act and in bands. She covers artists from Patsy Cline to Sheryl Crow.

Steve Hodak This singer/songwriter is known around Brevard as Stompbox Steve. He is a passionate performer and gigs fre-quently around Brevard. He started playing guitar and writ-ing songs as a teenager. He is working on his first CD.

Nashville Mike Nashville Mike (photo left) took a different route than most musicians. He left his Nashville home in 2007 with

his guitar and some flip flops and came to Brevard Coun-ty. He loves the fact that he’s worn nothing but flip flops since he got here. When he got his first gig in Brevard, they actually paid him at the end of the night. He had no idea…in Nashville you work for tips! He’s a great singer/songwriter with humorous lyrics and a great groove.

Shawn Foster Shawn Foster (photo center) has been playing guitar over 40 years. At age nine, Shawn was signed up for les-sons, and started attending classes once a week for Flamen-co and classical guitar. life got in the way and Foster put the guitar away for years. Back in the saddle, his music is being featured on a compilation CD with national distribu-tion. Primarily an instrumentalist, Foster takes classical and Spanish style guitar to a whole new level.

The Local Acoustic Guitar

Brevard Live

Jonathan Clay Houston born Acous-

tic/Pop artist Jona-than Clay is an MTV favorite. His music is featured on the WB net-work for several televi-sion shows. He’s often compared to John Mayer in his style. Clay has sev-eral CD’s under his belt and his musical success continues to rise. Born and raised as a Texas na-tive, Jonathan knew that in and around Austin was where he wanted to be. Singer, songwriter and

guitar player, presents his most soulful sound to date with second studio album, Back To Good. Combining potential, drive and passion, Clay has shaped a true collective mas-terpiece with hit singles “Around and round” and “New Design.” Back To Good steps up to the music industry plate head-on. Clay performs a solo, acoustic set.

Sam and RubyNashville artists Sam and ruby are Sam Brooker on

guitar/Piano/Vocals and ruby Amanfu, guitar/Vocal. They’ll perform with a full band at the art festival. Nomi-nated for a grammy in 2006 for their song “Heavens My Home” that was featured in the recent film SECRET LIFE OF BEES, the duo just signed with rycko records, a divi-sion of Warner Brothers. Their first CD is out right now. But the best way to describe Sam and ruby is to reprint a review because it so well describes their show: “i was pretty blown away by the tiny set i had seen them do in Nashville. But, somehow i was not prepared for the abso-lute perfection that is Sam & ruby. individually these two are stunning, both in appearance and talent, together they

are a force of nature that draws you into a world all their own. A beautifully intimate, emotion-ally charged world of flawless har-mony.” – reviewer unknown, but un-derstood.

On The National Scene

Patrick DroneySixteen year old Patrick Droney has become one of

America’s phenomenal young guitar players and tal-ented young songwriters. He made his national recording debut on September 23, 2008 with The Other Side (re-form records), a 12 song album that showcases his abil-ity to write rock songs with impressive guitar solos that are rhythmically and lyrically heartfelt, while exuding a sense of isolation that defies his age. Two of the songs on the album were co-written with Droney, “Alive” with Ben Burnley of Breaking Benjamin and “Everything” along-side 3 Doors Down guitarist Chris Henderson during a trip to Nashville. Patrick started playing guitar at the age of 7 after be-ing told to avoid sports and other risky activities due to a medical condition. “i was told i couldn’t play football,” says Patrick, “so i took up the guitar instead.” His band (in 2006) was the youngest to play the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, according to Vintage guitar Magazine. He has been the support band for such legends as B B king on more than one occasion, as well as the late James Brown. in 2007 he performed at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour, sharing the stage with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass, the same Jimi Hendrix Experience rhythm section that played behind Hendrix at Woodstock. Critics have compared his talent to one that fuses ele-ments of Stevie raye Vaughan, robert Johnson and John Mayer while adding his own original style. Patrick posses a textural smoothness and warm fluid-ity that connotes a visceral connection between his fingers and the fret board, belying his age. Blues Matters Maga-zine dubbed him “The New generation”, The 2007 SXSW Festival Must-See list called him “one of the best young guitarists alive today.”

Kevin Montgomerykevin Montgomery grew up on Nashville’s Music

row, as a child of parents whose careers crossed over from country music to the early, seminal days of Ameri-can rock ‘n’ roll. While the contemporary yet timeless feel of Kevin’s own music is strongly influenced by the

‘California Country-rock’ of artists like gram Parsons, The Eagles, and roger Mcguinn, his deeply resonant songwrit-ing recalls the Americana-flavored sto-rytelling of Bruce Springsteen and Jack-son Browne. Having spent the last four years of a decade-long career touring relentlessly and building an almost cult-like following in England and Europe,

kevin Montgomery offers up thirteen engaging stories of life, love, laughter and loss on his third album, 2:30am. kevin’s father, Bob Montgomery was an early song-writing and collaborative partner of Buddy Holly. By the time kevin was born, his dad was producing records by Bobby goldsboro and writing songs like the often-cov-ered “Misty Blue’”and “Back in Baby’s Arms,” made fa-mous by Patsy Cline. Meanwhile, kevin’s mother, Carol had a thriving ca-reer as a Nashville session vocalist, singing back up on pop classics like Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” and robert knight’s “Everlasting love.” A&M released kevin’s debut, Fear Nothing, in 1994 to critical acclaim, and after a year and a half of touring with Peter Himmelman, Sheryl Crow and David Crosby, he ended up back in Nashville. kevin stayed on the radar by working on the 1996 Buddy Holly tribute album, Not Fade Away: Remembering Buddy Holly. He recorded the song “Wishing” (written by his dad) as a duet with Mary Chapin Carpenter (Bob Montgomery also co-produced the track). Kevin was increasing his profile as a songwriter, Martina McBride recorded, “i Won’t Close My Eyes,” (from Fear Nothing) for her 1997 double-platinum selling album, Evolution. later, Juice Newton covered kevin’s song “red Blooded American Boy” (changing the gender reference to ‘girl’) for her 1999 release, American girl. kevin also sang backing vocals on lee Ann Womack’s “i know Why The river runs” for her platinum selling album, I Hope You Dance. When kevin recorded 2:30am, co-produced with rob-ert reynolds of The Mavericks, he knew the sound he was going for. “Over the past few years,” he explains, “we’ve developed The road Trippers with hardcore touring. We know the reaction certain songs get from the audience. i wanted that live energy to come across in the recording, but i also wanted to capture the subtleties of the music.”

Nouveaux Honkies The Nouveaux Honkies are a blues based, roots/Amer-icana band from Port Salerno, Florida. The group was of-ficially named in the summer of 2006, and they have de-veloped a extraordinary local following and continue to do what they have coined honkification. Their 2007 self titled release was named best roots cd by The Palm Beach Post and their 2008 release “Where Do i go” has seen great re-views and hit number 14 on the roots, Country charts in August. They are working on their 3rd CD for release in early 09’. This guitar, violin, bass and drum quartet put on a blistering show with a fresh approach but authentic sound that is truly their own. Check out the Nouveaux Honkies.

Sleepin’ Dogz Sleepin’ Dogz is comprised of singer-songwriter/ acoustic rhythm guitarist Jeannie Blatus and lead guitarist leo Burke. Their sound is an eclectic blend of blues, rock country and jazz. Hook laden and catchy, Jeannie’s songs are the kind you find yourself singing all day. Her intimate, honest delivery echoes the allure of Sheryl Crow combined with the soulful stylings of Bonnie raitt. She can conjure up the vein-popping, sweaty, powerful rocker within, then of-fer a healthy dose of sweet, smooth, and sultry. leo Burke’s guitar work adds an edgy excitement to the music. His poi-gnant playing tastefully weaves throughout the songs often harmonizing with Jeannie’s vocals. He has the ability to rip out a face melting lead or gently seduce with a beautiful melody. Their mutual love of music grew into a love for each other that is undeniably evident on stage. Together they put on a passionate performance.

Paul Santa Maria Jazz-Fusion Band Paul Santa Maria is a extremely experienced guitarist who has performed, recorded or composed with the likes

of larry Coryell, Wayne Shorter, Jeff Berlinand many more. He is an EMMY-award winning music composer and has 26 CD’s to his credit as well as being a visual artist. Paul plans a show that will include guitar quartet, solo guitar and jazz-fusion band perfor-mances featuring Bjarne

Jannik kjaer on drums, keyboard monster kenny Clarke, with rhonda Vuletich on sax, WFiT Jazz DJ rich gangi, Phil Margy and Eric Brandt on guitars plus surprise guests!

Atlantic Bluegrass Assembled in 2007, this group of local pickers is the real deal. Bluegrass the way it should be. Solid playing, and a fiddle player who claims Grand Ol Opry alumni sta-tus. The harmonies are tight and the sound is pure kentucky bluegrass alive in the hills of Brevard County.

Taylor Made Once voted Brevard’s Best by Brevard Live Magazine, this group has been in and out of Brevard’s music scene for nearly two decades. The core remains John Clark and Mark Mendonca and now includes two of Clark’s sons who grew up with Taylor Made music – Dave on bass and Mat-thew on guitar. They are known for covering the songs of James Taylor, Crosby Stills and Nash, and Simon and gar-funkel with a little led Zeppelin thrown in from time to time. guest musicians Dan latt and Mark Northwood add to the plate. Harmonies are tight, guitar work is flawless and the end result is unforgettable.

Dave Kury Band Dave kury is a Brevard music scene legend and not just in his own mind. At some point in time, every musician in Brevard County has been in Dave’s band. One of the most fluid, natural guitar players you’ll ever get to see, Dave kury combines his musical talent with his unique humor to create a great show every time. You never know what he’ll do next, what he’ll say or what he’ll play. Classic rock never had it so good.

DCT have opened for many national acts in their short but busy life as Dub City Tribe including Damien Marley, Stephen Marley, Maxi Priest, Toots and the May-tals, Mystic roots, The Original Wailers and many more. Voted Best Original band in Brevard for 2007 the band is on a steady road to national notoriety. Dub City performs on Saturday night.

Mint Condition featuring the Mills Brothers The Melbourne Art Festival’s 25th Anniversary cel-ebration would not be complete without this 10-piece blues band. Fronted by Bobby Mills (harmonica and vo-cals) and Johnny Mills (tasty blues guitar), Mint Condi-tion held the headliner position of the Festival’s Saturday night street party every year in the early days, back when the stage was located on the west side of the railroad tracks. This will be a treat for long-time festival goers and new attendees as well.

How To FixEverything

By Chuck Van Riper

The Column

i have a lot to rant about this month, so i’ll get right to it. This is how I would fix things:

1. Gun Rights – look, it’s very clear to me that the second amendment was put there for a reason. Our inherent right to bear arms has nothing to do with hunting, skeet shooting, or any kind of sport. it has everything to do with the people’s right to protect itself from a tyrannical, fascist government. remember, if we the people do not like what’s going on in the federal gov-ernment, we have the right (i say the patriotic duty) to replace it. Also, we also have the right to be secure in our property and belongings, etc. We have the right to protect ourselves and our property. We have the right to bear arms. We do not, however, have the right to go get an Ak47 and indiscriminately blow people away, steal, or in any way threaten anybody else’s safe-ty and security. The old debate still lingers: Would some one pull a gun on me if they knew i had a gun, too?

2. Abortion – Nowhere is it stated in the Constitution that a group of people may legislate their views upon another group. Whether you are pro- or anti- abortion is irrelevant. The point is that neither the Federal government, nor any one else, has the right to legislate morality. PEriOD!! if you don’t agree with abortion, fine, don’t get one. You have the right to your view. To all you right wing, self righteous, “religious” fanatics, remember that old biblical saying. To paraphrase- judge not lest ye yourselves be judged! Whether we agree or not, the real is-sue is, not whether you are for or against abortion, but whether the Federal government has the right to legislate that matter. NO! There is the possibility, however, for local and state gov-ernments to bring up their own legislation.

3. Stem Cell Research – This one just kills me. let’s see, we can take these cells and cure a whole bunch of diseases and help humanity be healthy and prosperous, or NOT!! What are we talking about here? The people that oppose this say that we are killing life. They make it sound as if we are ripping the spines out of little babies to do medical research. What about the fact that the aforementioned cells will be destroyed anyway. How is that NOT destroying life, too? We are talking about CEllS here. You know, the tiny things sitting in Petri dishes that we used to look at under a microscope in junior high chemistry. So the choice is: a.) Do research to save humanity or b.) Destroy the cells necessary to do that. Then the question arises, “When does life truly begin?” i’ll tell you. life begins when you get a social security number.

Brevard Live April 2009 - 27

4. Gay Marriage – (See #2) Once again, “Prop 8” is up for a vote in California. (The Ban gay Marriage Amendment). Vot-ing for this would ban gay marriage. i wonder how many gay people voted for this. Now, i personally am not gay. i do not see any way that i should be able to tell the gay community what to do. Maybe you should only be allowed to vote on this if you are gay. Maybe this shouldn’t even be an issue to be voted on. Again, whether you agree or disagree with this issue is irrelevant. Once again, does the government have the right to legislate morality? NO!

5. The Bailout – A trillion dollars! So far! Of “taxpayer” money?!? if we really want to “stimulate” the economy, why don’t we give that money to the taxpayers! That would mean $24,000 each! Talk about stimulating the economy! As far as these banks go, let them fail. They’ve ripped off enough money from us. Why do i have to pay them more money to keep them going? That’s just enabling them to do more of the same, isn’t it? Now we hear “the taxpayers now own 40% of this bank or 80% of that company”. Ok, if that’s true, how do we get paid back? How about this: instead of paying your mortgage, send them a letter saying “in lieu of the 45 billion of flat currency that we just loaned to you, I will withhold my money until i am paid back in full. Please let me know when that happens.” How about telling the credit card companies “You owe us half a trillion dollars. Please let me know what portion of that is due to me, subtract from that what i owe you, and send me a check for the balance. Of course, if this is not done within 30 days, i will have to charge you 23% interest, compounded daily!” How about if we tell the irS: “Although we realize that you are an illegal organization, we have man-aged to put up with you since 1913. Well, the party is over! We get taxed when we buy food, gas, clothes, make a phone call, watch TV, and everything else we do. Both your organization and the FED should be abolished. let me know when you’re finished spending OUR trillion dollars and we’ll send YOU a bill for payback. Until that time, please leave us alone!”

6. The War(s) – How much money would we save if we brought back All our troops from EVErYWHErE! Why do we have troops in germany, Japan, South America, and 150 countries around the world? How many hundreds of billions of dollars could be saved if we just brought them home? Why do we need a base in iraq that’s bigger than Vatican City?!? Do we really think we can impose a democracy in Afghanistan and iraq by killing more people? in the past 1000 year history of the Middle East, that has never worked. Why don’t we bring those all troops home and try securing our own borders? it is not our job to police the world. How many more countries will we bankrupt and destroy in the name of Capitalism and De-mocracy? But that’s a whole article in itself!

(to be continued) “If money is wanted by Rulers who have in any manner oppressed the People, they may retain it until their grievances are redressed, and thus peaceably procure relief, without trust-ing to despised petitions or disturbing the public tranquility.” 1774, Journals of the Continental Congress, 1:105-1

MOVIESby Greg Kimple & Franco Dean

TakenStarring: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen

& Maggie GraceRunning Time: 90 minutes

Rated: PG 13

i know it sounds crazy, but i must tell you that i can draw comparisons between Taken starring liam Neeson and

Friday the 13th starring whomever.1. i went to Taken with high expectations and was roundly disappointed.2. i witness the new Friday the 13th with little expectation and was generally pleased.3. Both films have done relatively well at the box office with Taken’s recent 100 million dollar taking, making an unlikely action star out off Neeson.4. The Friday the 13th smash opening weekend is now the all time highest grossing for a horror film and has reaf-firmed that Jason may well be eternal.5. Jason is a psycho, Neeson’s character is just pissed off and behaves like a psycho.6. Both men are athletic and both “have a unique set of skills which they have developed over their long careers.

Taken is the biggest sleeper hit of the year, and its success is largely due to an outstanding pre-film release advertising campaign. Neeson stars as Brian Mills, a CiA preventer who also has been an absentee father to his teenage daughter (grace). His spy life has made him a deadly individual who now is ready for retirement. He is an over-protective father who now wants to spend qual-ity time with his little girl. She is #1 on his agenda, but what’s this? She has gone to Paris with a girlfriend? And they both get kidnapped within hours of their arrival? By Bulgarians? What’s dad’s reaction? He decides to go Jason (Bourne not Voorhees) on the-ses evil Euro-trash, sex traffickers. It is astounding how Mills uncannily gets access to drugs, weapons and even an electric torture chamber. He’s coming to the rescue of his beloved daughter and will stop at literally nothing to reach success. lesson to be learned... don’t TAkE any-thing from liam Neeson. - rating: C

Friday the 13th features everything you might ex-pect from a gore/slasher flick. Teenagers being stalked and killed one by one, of course. There is a lake, nudity, simulated sex between those aforementioned kids, dope smoking, beer drinking and let’s not forget an extremely athletic, pissed off, super human killer, who after all these years still loves his mama. “Oh the Horror!”rating: B+

WatchmenStarring: Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson,Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jackie Earl Haley

& Malin AckermanRunning Time: 161 Minutes

Rated: R

in what Hollywood insiders are hoping will be the first blockbuster of the year, we get this long- awaited cin-

ematic release of the famed 1980’s graphic novel about flawed superheroes. They are not super in the normal sense of the word. The movie is set in 1985 with America and the Soviet Union on the brink of nuclear war. Presi-dent richard Nixon, whose success at ending the Vietnam War with the Watchmen’s help has garnered him 5 terms of office from a grateful nation. In the aftermath of this, superheroes have fallen of their pedestals and they are now outlawed. One of them, the Comedian (Morgan), has been brutally murdered and the rest of the motley crew investigates the crime. Director Zack Snyder (300 & the remake of Dawn of the Dead) has crammed a ton of bril-liant and brutal, almost cartoonish action, into this exces-sively long exercise in fantasy and flight. The movie is fever pitched and quick edited with a lot of blood and a dab of sex. Snyder wanted to put his movie making into high gear, but some will say that he overdid it, putting it into overkill. This is good action film but not as mind numbing as folks were led to believe. - rating: C

Brevard Live April 2009 - 39

In an effort to keep airborne sick-ness to a minimum- the Brevard

County Department of Corrections likes to keep the air temperature in its facilities set between teeth-chat-tering and I-can’t-feel-my-feet.

This is a little known fact to most “law abiding” citizens. One rarely gets to experience the irony of living out an over used expression (when hell freezes over), unless you make the mistake of crossing the line between ‘law abiding’ and ‘criminal‘. According to the great state of Florida, or as i like to say…”the man“ - i crossed that line. Some kind of cosmic sneeze had just thrown the universe into convul-sions. Everything was out of whack. good was evil and right was wrong. light was now dark and versa was vice. Dogs and cats were dating and the re-frigerator light was staying on when the door was closed. By a very cruel, and somewhat unnecessary, twist of events i suddenly found myself in hell and it was freezing. Three hours ago i was taking my ten year old nephew to the movies and my name was Uncle Matt. 180 minutes later i was sporting prison blues and posing for mug shots, taken by a very stiff photographer with zero artistic vi-sion. My name had been changed by a ridiculous amount of paperwork from uncle Matt to prisoner 28042. How did i get here? Unlike the ma-jority of other “guests” i met during my stay at the county digs, i actually was innocent of the charges typed on my ar-rest report. My temporary incarceration was the residual sludge left behind by

a very big, very concentrated mess of confusing paper work and misunder-stood county employees. As you can guess it’s quite a sordid story... just not the one i’m telling here. So, from the beginning! As the officer winched his cuffs around my wrists, well past any resem-blance of comfort, my brain hit mach 5. Distressing thoughts started piling up in my head. i wondered what my father was go-ing to say when i had to call him from “inside”. i tried to imagine what his re-action would be when the caller iD unit gave away my location. My second thought was a prayer that i didn’t remind this cop too much of the kids that picked on him in high school. Thoughts three through thirty seven were filed into a split second montage of every prison movie i’ve ever seen. My favorite is probably “The Shawshank redemption”, starring Tim robbins and Morgan Freeman. Maybe i thought if it just then because i could relate so well to the lead character. A good man in a bad place he very obviously did not belong. Thing is… bad things always happen to the good guys in prison mov-ies. No comfort there. On the way to the police station, my first stop en route to jail, I tried to convince myself to look at this as an opportunity to experience something different, something exciting- an un-charted adventure. As the cruiser pulled up to the PD and i was lead inside. Sud-denly a very distinct emotion washed over me. To my dismay it did not feel like excitement or adventure.

Fear (feer): an unpleasant feeling of apprehension or distress caused by the presence or anticipation of danger.

it’s amazing the way fear can take over not only your mind but your physi-cal being as well. in my years i have seen a multitude of shades and tints to the color “fear” but this time it was more like a presence. it was as if i was being possessed by an entity and it was quickly taking control.

ring, ring! ring, ring! “Hello?” “Hey dad, guess what?” “What?” “i’m in jail” “Fantastic!” (we‘re a family of smart asses) “Can you bring 1000 dollars to Sharpes so i can bond out?” “Umm... yeah, but i don’t want to wait around all night. Just call me when they release you and i’ll come up.” “Oh yeah… i’ll just tell them that you’re coming up later and they will probably just let me out of jail early. good plan dad!”

A short debate and we decided that once i was transferred to the actual pris-on i would try and use a phone, hope-fully armed with a bit more informa-tion. The jail is actually about twenty minutes from where i was arrested but because of standard routine i didn’t get there for almost three hours. in the meantime i took the opportunity to talk shop with some of my companions as our rolling cage moved from stop to stop picking up occasional passengers. i

quickly learned that in jail you are mea-sured and compared immediately by the size of your bond and no matter what your girlfriend says…size counts! As it turned out in terms of bond-envy i was slightly better endowed than the rest of the paddy wagon riders. i let this give me a small sliver of confidence. I was in a truck full of “criminals” and accord-ing to the paperwork i was the worst one on board. Maybe my stress was all for nothing. After all people in jail are still people right? rational, reasonable people that just made a few mistakes. i was in for a surprise. As an inmate, “processing” is your first look at the inside of the jail. This is where you are officially entered into the system. Here you are issued one set of clothes, one pair of flip-flops, one tooth brush, one blanket, one bar of soap, one inmate manual and one plastic pad to use as a mattress. All the prison movies i’ve ever seen depict a very thorough search for contraband during the processing procedure… the kind they need latex gloves for if you get my meaning, so, as i was system-atically transformed into a statistic i fully expected to be violated by a prison guard- looking for whatever i might be hiding in places i would never think of hiding anything. To my pleasant as well slightly disconcerted surprise, it never happened. A quick pat down and i was through. i even changed clothes in an-other room out of eye sight. The truth is, with a little imagination i could have smuggled in just about anything- drugs, weapons…a gameboy. Another hit to my comfort level. Just before i left processing i was given one last use of the telephone.

ring, ring! ring, ring! “Hello?” “Dad it’s me. i’m through process-ing and they are about to take me some where called the pod.” “Ok, so when will they release you?” “When they get the bond money.” “Well… i really don’t want to sit around for hours waiting for them to let you out. Can you ask them how long it

will take?” “Dad i think there is a misunder-standing here… i’m in jail!!”

Moments later i was separated from the group i came in with. i was a little disappointed because i felt i had formed a quasi-bond with a couple of them and i hoped that would be enough to lean on if i needed back-up. No such luck. As it turned out the reason my bond was a touch higher than every-one else’s was because my charge was of the felony variety while theirs were all misdemeanors. This meant my stay was to take place in a very, very dif-ferent part of the jail. So, hoping that rescue was on the way i picked up my bed roll and followed the guard down the hall, through several locked doors to the “pod”. The first thing you notice as you get close to the pod is the noise. it’s deaf-ening and i can only liken it to a high school cafeteria at lunch time. The next thing you notice as you walk inside, with the door locked securely behind, is that all eyes are on you. in a room de-signed to house maybe 25 people- there were at least 60 sets of eyes sizing me up. i knew in an instant i was the least qualified to be there. Now I worried how many of them could tell. Being the newsest i was immediate-ly approached by a very sketch, albeit very friendly, chap named Mike who was more than happy to help me find a cot to rest my belongings. He also let me know, in a very matter of fact man-ner, that if i needed any “services” he could arrange it. With this he pointed to a second floor catwalk where three shirtless men were leaning over the rail-ing whistling. To his disappointment i declined his offer but thanked him for the information and promised to come find him if I changed my mind. The second person i met in the pod was absolutely the biggest, scariest black man i’ve ever seen up close in person. He had to be close to nine feet tall, at least five hundred pounds of pure criminal muscle and a bond valued at 1 million dollars! You think i’m exagger-ating, and i probably am, but in my state

of acute anxiety that is honestly what i saw. i only note that he was black for one reason. The giant’s race made him a member of the ruling majority. Around 85 to 90 percent of the inmate popula-tion as far as i could tell. growing up a straight, white, American male i’m probably the least oppressed person in the world. i have never really known what it feels like to be a minority. in there i became a sec-ond class citizen with very few rights afforded by the governing body. i was informed by another helpful inmate that my new acquaintance was in for first degree murder, so when he told me i couldn’t put my mattress pad on cer-tain cots because they were “reserved” i didn’t hesitate to listen. i even thanked him for his assistance to which he glared before dismissing me. Thankful to be alive, I finally found an empty, non-“reserved” cot, unrolled my mattress pad and sat down to freak out in silence. A quick glance at my surroundings, being careful not to make eye contact with anyone, revealed- a television mounted in the corner, a bank of three phones on the opposite wall (which cost more to use than i was ever going to be willing to pay) and two stories of cells. i was also quick to notice that there were no guards anywhere. There was a blacked out sort of tower over looking the room but any guards that might be watching from there would have to de-scend two flights of stairs and be buzzed through the only door to the room should they be needed. Being gener-ous i didn’t believe they could make it into the pod in less than 3 minutes. A lot can happen in 3 minutes. in a 45 min-ute time period I saw two fights break out, both of which the guards were only able to make it in for the last blows. My comfort level was now in the negative. i tried to imagine that everyone around me must be feeling or at least at one time felt like i did. Truth is, while i was growing up in middle income sub-urbia preparing for college and a job, most of the gentlemen around me had been training for jail their entire lives. For some, short stints behind bars are

Brevard Scene

Tourette’s syndrome (too-rets) - A disorder characterized by involuntary muscle movements and vocal tics.

Tourette’s thrives on nervous en-ergy. i know this because i‘ve had it to deal with my entire life. if i’m nervous, scared or excited, it flares up. it goes without saying that the last thing i wanted was to “stick out”, but that’s exactly what i was doing! it wasn’t long before a few people no-ticed. luckily this time the guards were watching and when the threats began to intensify, they pulled me out of the pod citing my own safety. Now what to do with me? One guard suggested the bubble. The “bubble” is a Plexiglas cell with no beds, tables or chairs. Each bubble holds about ten inmates and is reserved for those who are suicidal or emotionally disturbed. i really wasn’t feeling that. A much better idea, someone de-cided, would be to have me sign myself into protective custody. Protective custody is typically for inmates who are in fear for their lives and therefore sign themselves into a 6x10 cell with where they will spend nearly all of their time. in this way they keep themselves out of general popula-tion and away from whomever it is that is apparently trying to kill them. given my choices PC seemed to be the way to go. My new roommates turned out to be mellow guys and we got along fairly well. They didn’t mind my funny noises, and after awhile i even felt com-fortable enough to ask a few questions. My first being “why are you in jail?” and my second being “why are you in PC?”. The answer to the second ques-tion was simple and the same for both

of them. Being followers of the “White Power” school of thought, they had problems with the African-American portion of the prison population and didn‘t try to hide it. i was a little more hesitant to pose the first question as to how they landed in jail in the first place but my curiosity won out and i went for it. kirk was the older of the two. i’m thinking maybe 42. He didn’t talk much, but offered a quick story about beating his girlfriend nearly to death and added that, had he known he was going to go to jail, he would have gone ahead and killed her because, “that’s what the bitch deserved!”. A more charming bed time story was never told. John was a bit younger, around 35. His story, though long, was entertain-ing as hell. John robbed a convenience store at gun point. However, as he will proudly tell you, he did not do it for the money. John committed armed rob-bery to prove a point to a rude cashier who wouldn’t let him pan-handle in the parking lot. That’s not even the best part! The kicker is how he got caught. Once he had the cash, not even fifty dollars, he fled exactly two doors down to an adult video store where the po-lice found him 30 minutes later. When i asked him why he didn’t hide some-where better or least further away. He said he wasn’t trying to hide. His mind was on spending the money and that’s where he wanted to spend it. Can’t fight that logic. The guys were excited because it was “razor day.” Apparently the in-mates are only allowed a shaving razor for 20 minutes once a week. No shaving gel or hot water, just a chilly handful of harsh soap, but they wait all week in an-ticipation. While my cell mates reveled in the break from boredom, i was beginning to wonder if anyone was coming to get me. There were no clocks or windows where I was and the constantly lit fluo-rescent lighting did little to clue me in on the time, but i knew it had been way too long and i was getting a little worried. Trying to stay awake, I flipped through my inmate manual pausing

briefly to consider the two page instruc-tional section on how to avoid sexual battery. Two hours later I was finally taken to “releasing”. This is of course where they give you back your clothes and shoes as well as any personal objects that were taken during processing. They also give you back any money that was taken minus the 20 dollar fee they charge for your night of hospitality. 30 minutes later i walked out the door. i found my brother waiting pa-tiently. it was now 4 am and he had been there for over 3 hours. i can’t imagine what could have possibly taken so long between him paying the bond and the guards coming to get me but i can’t say i was surprised. Everything from the very beginning of my ordeal seemed drawn out to a ridiculous and unnecessary length of time. Maybe the employees are overwhelmed due to the massive overcrowding. Maybe they just don’t care that they are dealing with ac-tual people. it was a hellish night but i got to see for myself just how flawed the system is from the inside out. For a guy like me who has felt relatively safe most of his life, jail was a traumatic and eye open-ing experience. Any toughness or bra-vado i thought i had dissolved instantly. i spent only one night in lock-up but it was enough to learn that i am not a tough guy and you can trust me when i say that jail is not somewhere i ever want to visit again.

***

As my attorney prepares my case for the prosecution my expectations for the final outcome have changed just a bit. Colored by a night on the inside, my original mission of complete exonera-tion has lost its ambition. My only real care now is not to be sent back to jail for any length of time. Probation, com-munity service, court costs… as long as jail time is not in the mix. i’m barely even bothered by the fact that i was never guilty to begin with. One night inside was enough to scare me into sub-mission. good work Brevard County!

“YES!”

Brevard Live Music Awards 2009

The sixth annual Brevard Live Music Awards are on the ho-

rizon. The date is set on Septem-ber 14th, the Monday after Labor Day, and the place is once again The Henegar Center in Historic Downtown Melbourne. The Mas-ter of Ceremonies is none other than rock-legend Paul Chapman.

Since the beginnings, the Brevard live Music Awards have been hosted by Chris long who also had been the driv-ing force in creating this annual event. But in the beginning of this year Chris decided to spend more time in Nashville, TN. it was time for a change. We at Brevard Live Magazine faced the task to find a worthy replacement. Someone funny, actually VErY fun-ny, un-bias, a professional, gracious, sober when necessary, lots of stage experience, and a legend in his own right! Big shoes to fill! How did we find Paul Chapman, guitar slinger, rock-legend from UFO-fame? - He has lived right here in Mel-bourne, Florida, for many years. He teaches guitar to many, many students and frequently flies to big concerts to per-form on big stages all over the world. He’s quick and funny, truthfully outrageous and always a barrel of laughs. He’s also been a longterm friend of the publisher of Brevard live Magazine. That always helps! We proposed - he said yes! After all, he is a veteran from the famous Orlando Jammy-Awards in the 90’s. Seen it, done it, now he’s ready to do it again. And if you never heard of Paul Chapman, you will now. We promise! look for the Paul Chapman story in one of our next issues.

New MC, New Format This year’s Brevard live Music Awards doesn’t just feature a new host, it also has a new format. kind of like the grammy’s. Different local entertainers will be invited to our stage to pass out the awards to the BMA-winners. Some things stay the same - the Danny Morris Band as our house band, soundguy keith O’Brian, stage direc-

tor Adam lucker, our celebrity-ushers from Absolute Blue, and all the sponsors that make it happen. Most local enter-tainment places are supporting this year’s event again.

The Brevard Music Aid For the first years Brevard Live Magazine donated the proceeds, altogether $11,000, to the Joe realino Memorial Fund that helps employees in the hospitality industry in times of need. Then we established the Brevard Music Aid, inc., in 2008 with the cause to help members of our music scene in time of need. So far four local musicians have re-ceived assistance. The admission, $10 per person, will go entirely to the Music Aid along with other proceeds from the event. For more information about the fund go to www.brevardmusicaid.com

Nominate Your Favorite Musician So be part of the game, the honor and the cause. read-ers of Brevard Live Magazine are called to fill out the first round of nomination ballots we publish in this and next is-sue. No copies are allowed and we appeal to everyone’s fairness and keep it to one vote per reader. Tell us your fa-vorite original and cover band, name your favorite vocalist, guitar and bass player, drummer etc., no matter what music you like. Your suggestions will make up the voting ballots. You can cast your votes from June to August 10th, 2009 - and then we will know who are Brevard’s favorites. But don’t forget: Bands that won the title of the “Entertainer of the Year” are out of the race. They are Absolute Blue, Taylor Made, Black-Eyed Soul, Medusa, and Vintage.

“What the hell are you doing here?” -- “i thought we got rid of you!” -- “Didn’t we have a going away party for you?” -- These are all things that i’ve heard over and over from various folks here in Brevard County recently as i’ve traveled back and forth from Florida to Tennessee, continuing my transition into the Nashville scene. i told Florida Today reporter Breuse Hickman last Janu-ary that given my ongoing professional connections to Brevard County, my relocation process to Tennessee would be a slow and gradual one. in fact, (hopefully) i’ll always be involved to some extent at my “second home,” Siggy’s in Palm Bay. i also went on to state in that interview that with my son, girlfriend, nail tech, doctor, lawyer, and mechanic All remaining in the Sunshine State, I would probably never be “officially” gone. So having said that, let me tell you, i love Tennessee. Ac-tually the cold weather is a welcome change of pace. i even recently went to Wal-Mart in the snow! Musically, things are of course quite exciting. For the mo-ment i’m living with friends in a town just outside of Nashville called Murfreesboro. You may recognize that name as being the home of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). But even for a small college town, the nightlife in Murfreesboro is excep-tional. Within just a three mile radius of our apartment there are 4 excellent clubs that offer both live bands and DJs. i’m out every night during the week, in the clubs, shaking hands, networking and promoting myself. i’ve spent the last 30 years developing my name in Brevard County so i guess it’s go-ing to take at least a little while to sell myself in Music City. So in the meantime i’m driving -- A lOT between Florida and Ten-nessee, trying to start something new. Fortunately i still have my fare share of work here in Brevard to keep me going. So yes, things are great “up north” but don’t expect to be completely rid of me anytime soon! Christopher Long

green light was formed from humble beginnings as a pickup band for a friend’s retirement from

the military in 1999. The original band lineup included Mike Pinnick and Tony Calenda on guitars, Dottie Pin-nick on Bass, Norm Edwards on Drums and ray Bell on Vocals, a year later they added Danny robertson. in 2004, the band picked up vocalist Becky leh-nerz. This opened a whole new world for green light and took the band to the next level. in 2007, green light reached a pinnacle when they were nominated and won Brevard County’s Favorite Cover Band for The Brevard live Music Awards. Also nominated were Dottie Pinnick, as Favorite Bass Play-er, Tony Calenda as Favorite guitar Player, ray Bell as Favorite Vocalist, and Norm Edwards as Favorite Drummer, which he also won. For Norm to win this award seemed like the best going away present ever. Uncle Sam called right after this and Norm Edwards had to move away to serve our country. green light was fortunate enough to pick up Tron Podgorski who seamlessly transitioned into the band, which was again nominated as Brevard’s County’s Fa-vorite Cover Band for 2008. Then Mike & Dottie Pin-nick decided to start living the rV life, leaving the band to search for someone to fill the void. But now Green light made its come-back at the St. Patrick’s Day Street Party in Downtown Melbourne sounding as good as ever. green light will be back at lou’s Blues on April 11th partying with their longtime fans.

Me and my dog Baxter were

excited to jump into reviews this month. We had two very different albums to

check out, so we hopped in my jeep and went driving for awhile. Sometimes that’s how we do our best listening, al-though i’m not sure how Bax can hear anything with his head out the friggin’ window. in this issue we are taking a look at a full CD by Hidden Angels- a very interesting band doing some very cool stuff, and a three song ep by Otis, My man- a group of old school rock-ers who are so hard core their disk got itself stuck in my CD player and broke the stereo in my car. let’s get started!

Hidden Angels - Oh Yes!!! if John lennon- during his lSD phase and Brian Wilson- during his agoraphobia phase decided to get to-gether and start a church…this would be the house band and choir. Most of the music seems sequenced, peppered with various live instruments. The

writing style is completely modular and very reminiscent Brian Wilson’s Smile. i also hear slight turns of the Sergeant Pepper creeping out here and there. The first track is an organ heavy instrumental that eventually bleeds into a shuffling boogie with some very sweet guitar work. The next few cuts lend to purposely processed vocals and thick harmonies. The lyrics are very direct about the bands Christian intent. Then, out of nowhere…there is a sax driven instrumental cover of “Take My Breath Away.” No idea what’s going on with that, but i enjoyed it anyway. These cats are out there, but i really dig what they do. it’s artsy and experimen-tal- a very cool listen. Baxter said it’s like taking communion only the wafers are laced.

i can’t tell you the names of the songs because there isn’t any info on

the CD or the liner. I tried to find them online, but i was unsuccessful. So, the best i can do is recommend you check them out…if you happen to find out where or who they are. let this be a lesson to all you bands getting ready to lick a stamp and drop your disk in the mail.

Otis, My Man - 3 song EP right off i want to talk about the production of this EP. i’m not sure if this is a live recording or if they just didn’t track individually in the studio. The musicians are on their game and I definitely dig on the mix of straight ahead rock and punk stlye drums and vocals, but the low quality mono mix of the CD brings it down some. i would really like to see what these guys can do in a professional studio. Better yet- check ‘em out live! “Baby keep Talk-ing” is the first cut and doesn’t hesitate for a second. Everybody goes full bore from the start and stays consistent all the way through the next two songs- “Shades of grey” and “Pieces of My-self”. These cats are full of energy and i’m betting their live shows get pretty rowdy. Otis is very consistent with their style, so if you like pounding rock you won’t be disappointed. They play hard and fast and Baxter tried to wag his tail to the beat, but he wore himself out and crashed.

keep the music coming! Brevard live Magazine, P.O. Box 1452, Mel-

bourne, Fl 32902.

By Eroica Fedder knowing Frank and his over-sized portions, we came hungry and started with a fruity Chianti, fresh bread and a garlic/olive oil dip. Mezza luna features an extensive wine-list, but since i am not an expert, all i can tell you is that i liked the wine. Then came the appetizers! Fried gorgonzola on vine-ripened tomatoes and grilled calamari over shaved fennel salad, both tasted heavenly. When Dani Donadi started sing-ing his italian classics, i thought i was in an italian paradise with wine and song where stress and hectic are things from the past. The appetizers were enough to fill me up, so I decided to portion myself and they don’t mind to wrap it up for a left-over bag to take home. The entrees were a dream. “Zuppa di Pesce” is clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari and a tuna steak in a marinara, garlic and white wine sauce over pasta, and the “Veal Sal-timbocca” is veal medallions, mushrooms, spinach and prosciutto, topped with Provologne cheese in Marsala wine sauce. Every bite was a sensation. What makes the food so different? Yes, it’s the fresh ingredients, the good recipes, and that it is made from scratch, but it is Frank’s “touch” that gives it the extra taste. That’s what Frank says and his customers know. At the end of a two-hour-dining-experience, we had no room for desert but we admired Mezza luna’s pastries buf-fet on our way out. People were already standing in line to get seated. So make reservations or come early like we did.Mezza luna is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, Sunday for dinner only. Open on Easter Sunday for traditional Easter brunch and dinner, 11 am to 9 pm.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and street party was a huge hit, as usual. People crowded the streets

early this year for the parade and all the participants were greeted with cheers and waves from the spectators. i have always experienced parades from the side-lines, watching the floats and cars roll by and trying to catch whatever was being thrown out to the crowd. This year i was able to participate in the parade with the Brevard Hash House Harriers (BVDH3) group. if you haven’t heard of bike or foot hashing before, the concept is simple: a trail of cooking flour and or chalk is laid out and the group follows, trying not to get lost and making their way to the end of the trail where the beer is. it’s a great group of people and a great way to get out and see things. They have been in the area for quite a long time and have been making appearances in the St. Patrick’s Day parade for years. it was great being behind the scenes and preparing to walk with the parade through crowds. We loaded up with beads and candy and went on our way to spread some St. Patty’s cheer. it was great seeing all the people’s face when they caught a string of beads or watching the kids’ eyes bulge when hand fulls of candy were tossed in their direction. People of all ages were getting into the spirit and everyone was having a great time. i was amazed at how many people were there. it seemed that our time to shine in the parade was over shortly after it started. i can see why people love participating in parades so much. i’ve always been a big fan of watching them, but being in one was amazing for me because i got to watch the happy faces of all the peo-ple who came out to celebrate in Downtown Melbourne. The festivities did not end with the parade. As al-ways, there was an all day street party and celebration. By dusk, the streets were filling quickly and crowds hud-dled in the streets with lines of people swimming through to get by to their next destination. This by far is one of the best St. Patrick’s celebra-tions i have ever been to, and it seems to get better every year. it makes me wonder what good times are in store for the St Patrick’s Parade 2010...

By Mara Bermudez

In college, I was a wannabe punk rocker. I caught just about every act that came into town with lit-

tle discern and had the Hot Topics shirt repertoire as proof. I saw bands that had no business being on stage as well as bands that now sell out arenas. Part of the lure was the music, of course, but there was also the moment immediately after the show when my friends and I would replay the show, as if neither of us had been there, over late night fare of streetcar hot dogs, cheeseless cheese sticks, or bloat-ed French toast. Over the years I have changed. I no longer sport the tell-tale X and if I see two shows per year, it’s an achievement. This isn’t a remark about the current state of music, but rather a change of priorities and an evolution of taste.

A friend and i recently caught a show at The Social and commented how the venue had changed over the years. Security has beefed up significantly and smokers have been corralled outdoors. You can watch a show without constantly monitoring your peripheral vision for scrawny teens with studded belts crowd surfing, almost certainly about to crash land on your head. Most notably, late night fare isn’t what it used to be or rather, we’re no longer the people we used be. There’s the matter of work and food allergies. After the show, we opted to meet for brunch the morning after the show. Although we had agreed to meet in the morning, my perpetual procrastination got the best of me and we made it just in time to catch the tail end of Ethos Vegan kitch-en’s renowned Sunday brunch. Vegan kitchen sounds in-timidating, but tastes just like, if not better, than the real thing. The menu consists of vegan alternatives to breakfast staples like pancakes, French toast, and sausage. No butter, no milk, no cheese, and no meat. No problem. The Cinnamon French Toast, dusted with powdered

sugar, provided a sweet spin to the classic, comforting dish without the egg binding. Drizzle with maple syrup or agave nectar and pair with fresh fruit or savory, chunky home fries. The chocolate chip pancakes were impossibly fluffy and just as impossible to share. A generous, hearty serving of grits, polenta for those in the know, was creamy and interesting selection nonetheless, but could have used a touch of seasoning. Opt for A la Carte and sample a few items at once. Wash it down with a crispy, light Mimosa or fresh coffee with soy creamer. Despite no meat or cheese, the food was filling and incredibly satisfying without a post-meal crash. A modern vibe permeates throughout with dark wood counters and tables, and work by local artists adorning the walls. A wraparound room and outdoor patio provides ample seating, room to relax, and a great view of lake ivanhoe. The staff was friendly, if not gracious, after we overstayed our welcome, swapping stories about the show, the daily grind, getting older and of course, good food.

Ethos Vegan Kitchen is at 1235 N. Orange Avenue in Orlando, Fl, (407) 228 - 3898. Hours are 11 am to 10 pm Monday through Saturday and 10 am to 3 pm Sunday, which features the aforementioned brunch-only menu. Welcome readers! I’m Weight Loss Master Coach Lisa Cavallaro and I’m thrilled to be writing for Brevard Florida LIVE. I’m a Central New Yorker (lots of snow!) who spends as much time as possible in the sunny state of Florida and this very magazine is the one I turn to when I’m looking for excitement.

In this, my first LIVE article, I thought I’d go right to the heart of one of the topics i coach people on most often. This is such a small point to make, but so impossible to exaggerate its importance. This topic has to do with weight and happiness. Or should i say “extra” weight and “unhappiness”. A major consensus among many overweight people is that in order to be happy, they first need to lose weight. Maybe you’re even a believer in this. if so, please read on… Even if your goal is something other than weight loss, you can still relate to this matter. The point is that using the mindset we have been trained to think with, we “think” that achieving our goal is what will make us happy. We think that being thin or being successful is what will make us happy? in other words, we think that something changing outside of us is going to make us feel so much better on the inside.

This is simply not true and i’ll explain why… Do you know anyone who has lost weight and is not happy? Do you know anyone who has lost weight and gained some, all, or even more back? Do you know anyone who has lots of money, yet is miserable? Sure you do. We all know lots of people who fit into all of these categories. These people have reached some pretty impressive goals, yet they are not happy and the reason for this is quite simple: Being happy is an inside job. like the old saying “money can’t buy happiness”, be-ing thin can’t buy happiness either. As coveted as money and thinness are in our society, we give them way too much power. Please understand me here. i’m not saying that be-ing thin and having money are not good things. i happen to think they are both fabulous things. But when we think that being thin will make us happy, then we want and want and want and in the meantime, we are essentially delaying our own happiness. With this in mind, i believe that the surest way to los-ing weight is to FirST, take your power back. By this i mean that you do not give your happiness power away to “thinness” or anything that exists outside you. You reserve that power for yourself. if you want happiness, then you find things in your life to be thankful for, to appreciate, to cultivate, to love. let’s face it. When we think that being thin will make us happy and the fact is that we’re overweight, then we think we cannot be happy now. When it comes to happi-ness, be impatient. Want it now. Find it. Create it. get it. By the way, when you start creating your own happi-ness, guess what happens? right… The weight comes off. Funny how that works.

Take one fantastic teacher (robin robb) and mix in five talented artists willing to volunteer their time (Sue

Tuttle, Viola Pace knudsen, Betsy Heath, leann Arnett and kathy gitlin), and you end up with the students in the gifted program at indialantic Elementary School learning to create fine art that will benefit environmental causes in our community. What could be better than that? it started with robin robb. She traditionally seeks out grants to provide her students with bigger and better edu-cational experiences. recently, she applied for four grants and cumulatively she has raised $6,000. The grant that is helping to support this project is a learn and Serve grant through the state called Supporting Environmental Excel-lence in kids (SEEk). Through this program, robb’s students, who range from 1st grade through 6th grade, are studying the indian river lagoon and at-risk waterways. The focus of the proj-ect is mainly on creativity, science and leadership. Some of the activities within the project include making books about the indian river lagoon and reading them to the kin-dergarten and first grade students; parents assisting by set-ting up websites about the Indian River Lagoon; a visiting professor from FiT and his grad students conducting paral-lel environmental projects; students writing a Rapp song to bring attention to the indian river lagoon, and many more.

The art projects featured here comprise another portion of the SEEk grant. last year, robb worked with Sue Tuttle of Mudflats Pottery on a birdhouse project. When Tuttle heard about the environmental project, she volunteered to help. Tuttle recruited other artists to help also. Each art-ist developed projects in their individual mediums and set out to collaborate with the students on creating pieces of fine art that will be available for silent auction at a commu-nity presentation on April 15 at the radisson Suite Hotel Oceanfront. in the spirit of giving, the rooms for the event have been donated by raed Alshaibi, the manager of the hotel.

Here’s a little something about each art project:Pottery with Sue Tuttle

Sue Tuttle comes by working with students honestly. While living in the state of Washington, Tuttle had worked with the schools of Bainbridge island School District rais-ing funds by creating an art project per classroom. So, it was only natural for her to translate her experience to this project. For her piece of art, the students made turtles that Tuttle will apply to a pair of 15-inch pottery sea turtle lamps. While watching Tuttle work with the students, it was evident that, in addition to creating beautiful pottery, she has a gift for getting the most from the students and ensuring inclusion of all.

Students Help The Environment Through Fine Art

Once in a while, I depart from my usual format of telling you the story of one specific, Brevard fine artist. This is one of those times. A story about one extraordinary teacher, five professional artists, and many junior artists fell into my lap. It was too good to keep to myself.

Pine needle baskets with Viola Pace Knudsen knudsen is a well-known Brevard artist who paints and creates pine needle baskets. She teaches pine needle basketry at Mudflats Pottery, so Tuttle pulled her into the project. The students worked with knudsen to make the baskets that will be featured in the silent auction. There was no hesitation on knudsen’s part when asked to participate. “Art is a good tool to raise awareness in the community,” knudsen said. “When people fall in love with things, they begin to protect them.” Hopefully, that is what will hap-pen through this environmental project: people will begin to care even more about our environment.

Betsy Heath helped students create with glass Heath is an artist and designer who frequently does in-teriors and is noted for murals and glass mosaics. For her part of the project, students have individually made a 6 or 7-inch section of a nature scene in glass. There were 20 stu-dents involved (all 5th graders) in this project. Heath said that the students, “rose to the occasion and did a beautiful job.” They created turtles, dragon flies, and a bird and fish (both in 3-D), as well as water, foliage, and sky. Heath will take all the parts and create a glass piece with the picture surrounding a mirror for the silent auction. it’s bound to be spectacular.

Leann Arnett, Indialantic art teacher As the art teacher of the school, Arnett helped students make beautiful radial mosaics for the silent auction. She is committed to bringing the students at indialantic Elemen-tary a total educational experience with art as one piece among many pieces that help to make the students into complete citizens. She expressed it well when she said, “it is our job to raise full, complete citizens. All subjects, in-cluding art, science and music do this.”

Kathy Gitlin melded the artwork of studentsinto a quilt

gitlin is a parent of two children at the school. Her part of the project was to collaborate with the students on a quilt. Each student first made an animal picture. Gitlin transferred the pictures onto fabric, making a fabric block from each picture. gatlin will combine the blocks into a quilt. They are also making t-shrits with the same pictures on them. gatlin indicated that she loves working with fabric and has wanted to work fabric art experiences into the curriculum for the children.

Come Celebrate the Project The project will culminate in a community presentation and silent auction. The artwork created in the project and some donated by area artists will be offered in silent auc-tion. The students intend to donate 100% of the proceeds of the silent auction to a variety of environmental charities, including the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, Barrier island Center, the Florida Wildlife Hospital and Sanctuary as well as others. During the celebration, the music teacher, linda Swartout, will have 4 or 5 students performing chamber type music as a background. Each grade will have a part in the event. Those parts include a living lagoon skit by the 6th grade, science display boards by the 5th grade, books prepared by the 4th grade, quilt and shirts prepared by the 3rd grade, and ocean motion pots and fish facts by the 1st and 2nd grades. The interaction of the public with the students will encourage their presen-

One For The Road

By Joey SimaoI Was Wrong

Could i have been wrong all this time? As i write this article President Obama just celebrated his first fifty

days in office and I think he is doing a wonderful job so far. That’s right; I said he was doing a wonderful job. When I am wrong i admit it. remember last month’s article when i said i needed to take a rest from the political arena? During that time i painstakingly reviewed my past articles and my soul. The more i watch and listen to President Obama i can not help but think that this guy is right on. Why shouldn’t we take more money from the rich bastards and give it to the poor. How dare people have so much when others have so little. Now when i walk down the street and see a homeless person i wonder why Donald Trump is living large and the homeless are living in a large box. i have to agree with the President that we all are “en-titled” to health care. Each person should be able to pick up a phone and make an appointment to see a doctor whenever one is needed and not worry about the cost. The doctors that went to school for all those years in order to make hundred of thousands of dollars off sick people need to be put in their place. They are no better than the mechanic down the street working on my car or the person picking up garbage for Waste Management. They use our current health system to line their pockets and I am glad we finally have a Presi-dent that will put doctors in their place. let the government dictate the cost of all procedures and who can have them. i am very confident now with letting the government handle health care since President Obama is in charge. i thought President Obama’s hiring of Timothy geith-ner as Treasury Secretary was a brilliant move. Think about it. Our president is sending a message to every American that he understands that we all hate paying taxes and yes even the most powerful and educated people sometimes mistakenly forget to pay their appropriate taxes. By nomi-nating Tim he is really saying that he is just one of us. Thank you Mr. President. There has been some talk recently in the media about how much traveling the President has been doing. Person-ally i feel the more he is out there with the people and not paying attention to the every day government business the better we will all be. He is helping the economy whenever he travels. When the president visits a city to speak all the businesses prosper in that area. The shops and restaurants are packed with media people that for the most part might not be there if it was not for the president. Air and hotel

Historic Cocoa Vil-lage will hold its an-

nual Summer Craft Fair on the weekend of May 16th and 17th (Saturday & Sunday) from 10 am to 5 pm. The summer show at-tracts more artists because it is a juried show where the winners of eight cat-egories receive cash prizes and awards. The fair also features children’s amuse-ment, food & beverage court and entertainment. Many young artists and other entrepreneurs

are getting their start in these art fairs. And gal-lery owners have the op-portunity to bring their art closer to the public. The backdrop is the beautiful Historic Cocoa Village which is comprised of more than 50 unique shops and restaurnants, open for regular hours during the show. reservation are made from those attending the event in hopes of catching a glimpse at this remarkable individual. The man knows what he is doing. The President vowed for transparency yet once again the media is slamming him for not being so. “get of his back” is all i can say to them. Why should the media feel that they are privy to everything that our President is doing? You can not hold the President word for word to what he was saying when campaigning. That would not be fair. in the heat of an election there are times when both parties may fib a little. President Obama is only human so give him a break. As far as the fairness doctrine is concerned. i now be-lieve that there should be equal time for the liberal views on the air waves. i myself was so indoctrinated by all the hate on conservative radio that i closed my mind to the other side. i now see where i like many people were not smart enough to think for ourselves and we hung on to everything that con-servative radio was preaching. i now listen strictly to liberal radio in order to support my President, Barrack Obama. if you would like to contact me please write to [email protected] i look forward to writing my next article and one other thing. in regards to this entire article …..
