PITCHING INBack in May, Brandon Woodruff, together with Brewers Community Foundation and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation, teamed up with Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity to begin building a safe, affordable home in Milwaukee’s Midtown neighborhood. The build marks a 15-year partnership between BCF and Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity to help local families become first-time home buyers.

SPARKPLUG AT SHORTWith a career-best four hits and a career-tying high of four RBI on May 27 against the Padres, Willy Adames became only the third Brewers’ shortstop in franchise

history to record the feat in a game, joining Robin Yount (1978 and 1982) and J.J. Hardy (2005).

FREDDY OR NOTOn his 25th birthday, Freddy Peralta nearly pitched a no-hitter as he led the Brewers to a 5-1 victory over the Diamondbacks at American Family Field. Peralta took the gem into the eighth inning before Nick Ahmed spoiled it with a one-out single to left. Peralta settled for a combined one hit win. Peralta has now pitched at least five innings with just one hit allowed in five appearances this season - a franchise record.

BOMBS AWAYFrom May 30-June 10, the Brewers hit 22 home runs over the course of 10 straight games. They posted an 8-2 mark during the long ball spree led by Avisaíl García, Omar Narváez, Daniel Vogelbach and Tyrone Taylor, each hitting three homers. The team record for consecutive games with at least one homer is 20 straight games accomplished in 2008. Between July 1 and 24 that season, the Brewers hit 31 homers, led by J.J. Hardy who accounted for eight of them. The Brewers also had a string of 19 consecutive games (35 homers) in 1996, 16 straight (33 homers) in 2007 and 15 straight (35 homers) in 1982.

With a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, Aurora Health Care® is sponsoring the annual Negro Leagues Tribute Game at American Family Field on July 24th. The Brewers are scheduled to play the White Sox. Game time is set for 6:10 p.m.

According to Larry Lester, co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and chairman of SABR’s Negro Leagues Research Committee, roughly 130 players from the Negro Leagues are still living.

To honor the Negro Leagues, the Brewers and Associated Bank have partnered with

The Hop to celebrate the league’s 101st Anniversary by bringing awareness and education of the storied history of the Negro Leagues and their impact, and to honor the Milwaukee Bears, the city’s Negro National League team. The collaboration is in support of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. A special Milwaukee Bears wrapped Hop streetcar will run throughout 2021.

The wrapped streetcar depicts imagery of the Milwaukee Bears that competed during the 1923 season. On the interior of the car, new displays will introduce

streetcar riders to the history and legacy of the Negro Leagues, while The Hop and the Brewers plan to facilitate additional educational events throughout the summer to continue celebrating the Negro Leagues 101 platform.

“At the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum our mission every day is to breathe new life into the incredible history of the game and to continue to introduce new fans and new generations to these amazing athletes and people whose impact on and off the field was profound,” said Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball

FAST START, QUICK LEARNERBRANDON WOODRUFF’S ONE OF MLB’S TOP PITCHERS

STORY BY MARIO ZIINOPHOTOS BY SCOTT PAULUS AND KIRSTEN SCHMITT

BRANDON WOODRUFF

Back in May, Brandon Woodruff earned his first National League Player of the Week honor.

22 I M I L W A U K E E B R E W E R S

M I L W A U K E E B R E W E R S I 23

Mike Caldwell, one of the franchise’s 20-game winners, once shared the keyto his success on themound.

“It’s very important for a pitcher to be on top of his game once the season starts,” said the shifty lefty, who won 102 games with the Brewers. “A lot of times, the difference between a good and bad season depends on what a pitcher does in his first five or six weeks of the season. That’s a good time for a pitcher who is in excellent shape to go out and win five, six or seven games. When a pitcher gets that momentum going it’ll help him in the second half when hitters tend to catch up.”

It appears that during his brief career, and particularly this season, Brandon Woodruff has followed that approach. Through the first two months of the season, Woodruff posted a 4-2 record with a1.27 ERA. In his first11 starts, the Brewerswon eight of them,as he registered 10straight quality starts.

Reaching back for his signature 98-mph fastball, the big right-hander has mixed in five pitches that he can throw for strikes and keep opposing hitters off-balance. And in doing that with relative ease in 2021,

he’s gotten off to one of the best starts in team history.

“Every year has been a progression,” Woodruff said. “Going back to 2019, I’ve learned a little bit of the analytical side of how my stuff works for me. I’m getting to a point now where I understand myself better. I know what works for me and that helps out a lot.

“But honestly, I believe that the more innings I get under my belt, and the more situations I get into, the more I can work through things.”

From Opening Day through Memorial Day, Woodruff, 28, shined as one of Major League Baseball’s finest starting pitchers. In fact, he jockeyed his way into the early conversation as a candidate for the National League Cy Young Award.

He closed out May with his first National League Player of the Week honor. He pocketed a couple of victories – a 5-3 win over the Padres and a 3-0 decision over theNationals – working 14scoreless innings andallowing just five hitsand two walks whilefanning 18 batters.

“It’s a huge honor and I’m happy that I could perform,” he simply expressed on MLB’s The Rundown when he was recognized. “I

have an idea on how hitters try to attack me and I have a plan for hitters. But that can go out the window in the first inning if I don’t execute.

“So you take it one pitch at a time and execute your pitch to the best of your ability. I’ve gotten better reading hitter’s swings over the last few years.”

Going deep into games has been his strength. Brewers fans have come to expect it.

“Quality starts sold him short if you define it as six innings and three runs,” Manager Craig Counsell said of his ability to work well past the requirements. “Woody was better than that. That’s what great pitchers do; they get deep into games and don’t give up runs at all. With Woody, it’s a low number every time out.”

The skipper was right about that. Woodruff is only the eighth pitcher in franchise history to record at least 10 consecutive quality starts – the first since CC Sabathia had 13 (July 8-September 10) backin 2008.

Nevertheless, Woodruff took it all in stride.

“I just try to go out and pitch deep into games and stay out there as long as I can,” he said

24 I M I L W A U K E E B R E W E R S

of the consistency. “I try to go out and do my job.

“I try to mix it up and get ahead and move the ball around to different quadrants of the zone. Thankfully, I’ve been able to execute and get deep into games.”

The Wheeler, Miss. throwback pitcher, who believes in finishing what he starts, was drafted by the Brewers out of baseball-rich Mississippi State University. Woodruff was an 11th round selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft – the 326th overall pickand the 176th pitcherchosen.

He quickly showed great promise when he posted a combined 14-9 record and 2.68ERA in 28 starts atClass-A Brevard

County and Double-A Biloxi in 2016. In 158 innings of work, he struck out 173 batters – tops in all of MinorLeague Baseball.

In one stretch that season, he recorded 24.1 consecutive scoreless innings over five starts and went on to earn the Robin Yount Performance Award as the top young pitching prospect in the entire farm system.

In August of 2017, he earned his first call up and made his big league debut memorable. It was August 4, and Woody pitched 6.1 innings of shutout ball against the Rays in Tampa, scattering seven hits while walking two and fanning six. For his effort, he earned a 2-0 victory.

He split time between

Triple-A Colorado Springs and Milwaukee in 2018. Woodruff earned a September call up and helped the Brewers capture the NL Central Division title by working out of the bullpen; picking up a win, a save and a pair of holds in seven appearances. What was impressive was that in 12-plus innings, he allowed just one run.

“I started to understand it in 2017 when I first went to Triple-A,” Woodruff explained. “I was strictly a four-seamer and I wasn’t getting swing-and-misses as much. I dug into the numbers (analytics) and noticed I didn’t spin the four-seamer that great. In college, I threw a two-seamer, so I went back to it and continued to improve the four-seamer to make it all work better.”

The rookie opened the 2018 National League Division Series against the Rockies by tossing three scoreless frames as the Brewers went on to sweep Colorado.

In the next round, he earned a victory in the opening game of the NL Championship Series over Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, pitching two scoreless frames in relief while chipping

Brandon Woodruff’s success comes from keeping hitter off-balance by using five pitches effectively.

in with a home run off of the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

His steady performance in the playoffs earned Woodruff a spot on the 2019 Opening Day roster and a place in the starting rotation.

He didn’t disappoint, winning 11 of 14 decisions and an invitation to his first All-Star Game before a left oblique strain cut-short a promising campaign.

Last year was shaping up to be a big season for Woodruff when the coronavirus pandemic hit and turned 2020 into an abbreviated schedule. Despite leading the Majors with 13 starts and posting a respectable 3.05 ERA, Woodruff won only three of eight decisions.

The offense, which carried the Brewers

to a division crown and consecutive playoff appearances, suddenly plagued the team during the COVID-19 campaign, despite still making it straight to third straight trip to the postseason.

Woodruff doesn’t see that as a fault, though he has had to deal with a lack of support a number of times.

“I’m not going to blame anybody because I know how hard this game is,” Woodruff told MLB.com. “It’s hard to hit. I've experienced it. Hitting against this caliber of pitching is hard.”

Fortunately, the Brewers have one of the better pitching staffs, led by starters Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta, in all of baseball.“It’s very fun to catch Woody when he

controls the baseball,” catcher Manny Piña observed. “The other teams, they look frustrated. They don’t know what they are going to get from him. They wait for a fastball and he throws a breaking ball. They look for a breaking ball and he throws a fastball. He keeps them guessing.

“The confidence he has right now on the mound is unbelievable.”

True. But Woodruff trusts the offense and what it is capable of doing.

“We’ve got a really good team; we’ll get rolling once we get everybody back and healthy,” he said. “We’re playing some good baseball but it’s a long season and we have some time to get things on track.

“By September, I think we’ll be in the thick of things and we’ll be dangerous.”

What uniform numbers did Doug Jones wear as a Brewers relief pitcher?

answer: B, C & E) Doug Jones wore three of the five numbers listed. In 1982, he opened the year wearing No. 54; he later switched to 45; and from 1996-98, he wore No. 43.

CIRCLE THE CORRECT ONES

Acquired in a trade with the Indians right before the 2008 All-Star Game, Sabathia went on to post an 11-2 record in 17 starts, tossing three shutouts and seven complete games in leading the Brewers to their first National League Wild Card berth – their first postseason invitation in 26 years. Sabathia is the only Brewer to ever

toss complete-game victories in the last and first games sandwiched around a Midsummer Classic. On July 13, he closed out the first half with a 3-2 win over the Reds at Miller Park as Craig Counsell delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly. On July 18, Sabathia faced the minimum through six innings and went on to defeat the Giants in San Francisco, 9-1, scattering four hits while fanning 10 batters. Sabathia also had a near no-hitter when on August 31, he pitched a one-hit, 7-0 gem at Pittsburgh. He closed out the regular season with a must-win, 3-1complete game victory over the Cubs at Miller Park to secure a playoff spot.

?? ? STUMP THE UMP

answer: Answer: If a base runner is struck by a batted ball while running to the advancing base, play is immediately stopped. The runner is ruled out and the batter is credited with a single.

July 12, 2001 – The Walk of Fame at Miller Park, now American Family Field, was dedicated and the names of Henry Aaron, Rollie Fingers, Paul Molitor and Robin Yount were the first inscribed on home plates shaped in granite that encircled the ballpark plaza. In addition, the matted red brick home plates bear their uniform numbers and years of service with the franchise. Since then, 16 others have joined them on the plaza.

There’s a runner on first base with no outs. He takes off for second when the batter hits a hard grounder between the first and second basemen. The runner tries to jump over the ball but is struck by it on his leg. What’s the call?

RARE BASEBALL FEATSEFFORTLESS ALL-STAR WIN

answer: C) In the 1954 All-Star Game played at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium, Washington Senators pitcher Dean Stone was credited with the 11-9 victory without facing a single National League batter. Stone entered the game for the American League, trailing, 9-8, with two outs in the eighth inning and a runner on third base. Before he could deliver a pitch, the runner, Red Schoendienst, attempted to steal home and was thrown out. The AL rallied with three runs in the ninth to win the game. Larry Doby, who pinch-hit for Stone in the ninth, became the first Black player to hit an All-Star Game home run. He was followed by Nellie Fox’s two-run single to seal the victory.

TIME WAS.. .20 YEARS AGO

A] Ken Brett B] Jerry Reuss C] Dean Stone

Through the first 90 MLB All-Star Games, only one pitcher was ever credited with a victory without retiring a batter. Can you name him?

Series Notes: The Reds are making the second of three visits to American Family Field this season. Earlier this season, the Brewers made two stops in Cincinnati, taking four of six games. However, last month, the Brewers were swept at home by the Reds for the first time since 2009. Over the last four-plus seasons, Milwaukee has posted a 43-32 record, going 20-17 at home.

Reds Roundup: Two big surprises for the Reds on offense have been Tyler Naquin and Jesse Winker. Both reached double-digits in home runs before the end of May. In fact, Winker tagged Brewers pitching for five homers back in a May series at Great American Ball Park. Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suárez continue to play a steady role and anchor the lineup. Former Brewer Wade Miley tossed a no-hitter against the Indians back on May 7, and together with Tyler Mahle, kept the Reds competitive while Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray struggled out of the box. Five relievers have shared the closer role with Lucas Sims and Tejay Antone handling the bulk of the work. The Reds have held their own within the NL Central and could be a thorn for the division contenders in the second half.

Series Spotlight: July 3, 2015 – Carlos Gómez’s seventh-inning grand slam powered the Brewers to a 12-1 victory over the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Gómez, Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy each had three hits to lead a 16-hit barrage. Mike Fiers benefitted from all the offense as he worked seven scoreless innings to earn the victory.

kansas City royalsJULY 20 & 21

Series Notes: The Royals and Brewers recently squared off in a two-game set in Kansas City back in May and last played a three-game series at home in 2020. Since switching to the National League in 1998, the Brewers are 16-18 against the Royals, winning six of the last nine meetings. At home, the Brewers have won three straight and four of the last five games against KC.

2020 Season: The Royals finished fourth in the American League Central Division with a 26-34 record. Kansas City missed the postseason for the fifth straight season.

Royal Flush: Last season, no one said it would be easy for Manager Mike Matheny but the Royals showed some positive signs. KC entered 2021 optimistic about its chances in the AL Central. Before the season opened, Salvador Pérez was rewarded with the most lucrative contract in franchise history. Youngster Nicky Lopez has mixed in well with veterans Whit Merrifield, Carlos Santana, Michael Taylor and Jorge Soler in the lineup. The offseason addition of Andrew Benintendi adds to both defense and offense. Likewise, young pitchers Brad Keller, Brady Singer and Kris Bubic have flashed promise and complement veterans Danny Duffy and Mike Minor in the rotation. The bullpen has settled in behind veterans Greg Holland and Wade Davis, who set up young, solid closer Josh Staumont.

Series Spotlight: July 5, 1992 – In a historic night, the Brewers swept a doubleheader from the Royals at Kaufman Stadium. The Brewers took the opener, 2-1, in 12 innings and the nightcap, 9-7. Paul Molitor’s single in the 11th inning of the opener made the evening momentous. Molitor, together with Jim Gantner and Robin Yount, became baseball’s first threesome of teammates to amass 6,200 career hits. Over a 15-year span, Milwaukee’s Triumphant Trio collected 6,399 hits – still an MLB record.

Series Notes: Last season, the White Sox and Brewers split four games in the home-and-home series due to the revamped COVID-19 schedule. The Brewers have not won a season series from the White Sox since 1999, and have dropped nine of the last 11 games at home, including the last four straight meetings.

2020 Season: The White Sox finished second in the American League Central Division with a 35-25 record, snapping a seven-year losing streak. In the ALWild Card Series, the White Soxwere eliminated by the Athletics,2-games-to-1.

Sox Stuff: The White Sox are primed to make a deep postseason run. AL MVP José Abreu and catcher Yasmani Grandal provide leadership for a young core of talent that includes Luis Robert and Tim Anderson. Lost since March with a ruptured pectoral tendon, Eloy Jiménez hopes to return next month. Coaxed out of retirement, Manager Tony La Russa returns to the Sox where his managerial career began in 1979. He has plenty to work with especially after Chicago landed pitchers Lance Lynn and Liam Hendriks. They fit nicely into a rotation that features Lucas Giolito and Dallas Keuchel. A healthy Michael Kopech would be a bonus.

SIMBA PRIDETED SIMMONS CATCHES ON WITH THE HALL OF FAME STORY BY MARIO ZIINOBREWERS ARCHIVE PHOTOS AND NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME

Ted Simmons ranks among baseball’s all-time leading catchers.

Though Ted Simmons will have to wait a bit longer, the door to Cooperstown will finally swing open for him on September 8.

Not only has he had to wait 32 years to earn admittance, but

Simmons’ big day was postponed a year ago due to the coronavirus pandemic and now delayed an additional seven weeks from the original July 25th date so as to accommodate a limited crowd. It’s the right decision,

since the original plan called for a virtual ceremony, and will now allow family and friends to be in attendance.

Nonetheless, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the

Modern Baseball Era Committee will make the wait worthwhile.

“There’s never too long a time to wait if you finally make the leap,” Simmons, 71, said.

After missing the nomination in 2017 by a single vote, Simmons was named on 13 of 16 ballots in 2020. His skill set, knowledge and personal statistics over a 21-year playing career made him only the 19th catcher – the seventh thismillennium – to beelected.

Also voted in by the Veterans Committee, will be the late players’ union leader Marvin Miller, who’ll be honored posthumously at Cooperstown. They join the Baseball Writers Association of America selections Derek Jeter and Larry Walker, along with Ford Frick Award winner Ken “Hawk” Harrelson and the BBWAA Career Excellence Award recipient the late Nick Cafardo.

In a joint ceremony, the Hall of Fame will recognize the 2021 class. This year’s honorees include Ford Frick Award recipient Al Michaels and the BBWAA Career Excellence Award winner Dick Kaegel. For the first time since 2013 and the eleventh time since the doors

first opened in 1936, no players were voted in 2021.

As for Simmons’ journey to Cooperstown, it was stalled, perhaps, because he played in the same era of the great Reds’ catcher Johnny Bench, who overshadowed many catchers who had legitimate credentials both at the plate and behind it.

“The one difficulty I had as a catcher, particularly in the National League, was the pretty profound standard set over there,” recalled Simmons. “That standard was Bench and in his prime years, he was the best catcher imaginable. He had the finest arm you could put on a catcher. He was big and strong. He could block the ball well. He could throw anybody out. When people watched Bench catch, everyone else seemed to be a step or two below that standard.”

A switch-hitting catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals for 13 seasons – where he hit .300 or better seven times – Simmons was part of a seven-player trade to the Brewers at the 1980 Winter Meetings. It was perhaps the greatest trade in franchise history. The Cardinals

dealt Simmons, along with closer Rollie Fingers and starting pitcher Pete Vuckovich to Milwaukee for outfielder Sixto Lezcano, pitchers Dave LaPoint and Lary Sorensen, and outfield prospect David Green.

The following season, the Brewers earned their first postseason invitation, and in 1982, they won the American League pennant and only berth to a World Series, ironically losing to the Cardinals in seven games.

Fingers won the American League MVP and AL Cy Young awards in 1981, while Vuckovich won the AL Cy Young Award in 1982. Simmons, who played five seasons in Milwaukee and batted .262, including .308 in 1983, made the final two of his eight All-Star appearances in a Brewers uniform. He was the starting catcher in the 50th Midsummer Classic in which the American League won, snapping an 11-year losing streak.

Simmons is the seventh member of the 1982 Brewers’ organization to earn election to the Hall of Fame, joining Rollie Fingers (1992), Don Sutton (1998), Robin Yount (1999), Bob Uecker (2003), Paul Molitor (2004) and

Allan H. (Bud) Selig (2017).

“I was happy to come to Milwaukee,” Simmons said. “It was a fantastic opportunity to play with the likes of Cecil Cooper, Robin Yount, Larry Hisle, Paul Molitor, Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglivie.

“There was some adjusting in the beginning. But to be part of that team was very exciting. The only goal I had at that point in my career was to win. I knew how good

New York, Baltimore and Boston were in the division but I felt we could unseat that precedence.”

After struggling in his first season, Simmons made the adjustments by 1982, enjoying the finest of his five seasons in the American League. He caught in 125 games and batted .269 – 53 points higher than the previous campaign – while adding 23 home runs and 97 RBI.

According to Simmons, who had

never participated in the postseason prior to and after playing in Milwaukee, being part of the first championship was quite special.

“That was my goal,” Simmons shared. “I believed that that trade put Milwaukee in a positive position to contend and win the pennant.”

In Milwaukee, Simmons was all about firsts. His first hit was a home run. He was the first Brewer switch-hitter to homer from each side of the plate in the same game. He was the first Brewer to hit a playoff homer and the first to homer in the World Series. And, Simmons was behind the plate in all but three of the team’s 147 postseason innings in 1981 and ’82.

“When I look back on my career I assure you I first look to Milwaukee,” he shared. “Nothing against St. Louis because I had a lot of good times and good years there, but to fulfill a dream of playing in a World Series with the players we had in Milwaukee was more than what I could ask. Just being part of the first championship team for a first-rate organization was memorable.”

Simmons closed out his career as a part-

time catcher with the Atlanta Braves. When he retired following the 1988 campaign, no catcher in baseball history had more hits, and only Hall of Famers Yogi Berra had more RBI and Carlton Fisk had more total bases.

Since then, Iván Rodriguez overtook Simmons in the hits category. Nonetheless, he still ranks second among catchers with 2,472 hits and 1,389 RBI. He is fifth with 1,074 runs scored, seventh with 248 home runs and eighth with a .285 batting average.

Simmons enjoyed his finest season in 1975 when he had a career-best .332 mark, finishing sixth in the National League MVP balloting. Six times he reached 20 home runs. Eight times he exceeded 90 RBI, including three times over 100 RBI with a career-best108 in 1983.

“I looked in the mirror,” Simmons once said. “I wanted to be a shortstop, but with this body, it was obvious I’d be a catcher.”

After his playing days, Simmons served a number of organizations as a general manager, coach, scout and adviser.

Yet, despite his solid playing career, he received little support at the ballot box. That lack of votes eliminated him for future considerations.

Over the years, however, the analytic generation gained a deeper appreciation of his accomplishments, putting a greater emphasis on expanded statistics.

Simmons’ 50.3-career WAR (Wins Above Replacement) made him one of nine catchers with 50 or more. That put him in the same category as Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, Iván Rodriguez, Carlton Fisk, Gabby Hartnett, Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza and Bill Dickey.

“If it weren’t for the analytics people, my career as a potential Hall of Famer probably would have been shut down and forgotten a long time ago,” Simmons said. “When they started talking about on-base percentage and WAR and how WAR was comprised, it became a real study and then the real comparisons started to develop.”

As much as being recognized by the Hall, what mattered most to Simmons was the respect of those who knew

him best. Besides being called “Simba,” for his long locks, the nickname also suggested he had the heart of a lion.

“I always thought the game through,” he explained. “I studied. I watched. I understood what was about to happen. I would do things and people would say to me, ‘How did you know that was going to happen?’ I studied the game long and hard and took the job seriously from a defensive perspective.”

Don’t ever think that luck has nothing to do with pitching a no-hitter.

Through the first seven weeks of the

2021 season, there were six no-hitters. The Major League record for no-no’s in a season (since 1900) is seven, accomplished four times with the

last being in 2015, and likely will be broken this year.

and Corbin Burnes have toiled with near no-hitters this season.

Yet, if asked, a pitcher who ever tossed one may point to a great catch or acrobatic back-handed stab as pivotal to preserving a no-hitter. Then ask the same question to a pitcher who took a no-no deep into a game only to suffer the agony of losing one and he may attribute it to a mistake-pitch or a grounder that eluded an infielder or a fly ball that dropped in front of an outfielder.

There are some pitchers who grind through a batting order with an elevated pitch-count who can’t explain how they managed to toss one, let alone explain how they were able to stay on the mound long enough to see one through. Surprisingly, their answers may be similar. Luck or a lack there of always seems to come into play.

For example, in the more than 8,000 games played in Brewers history, only once has a pitcher tossed a no-no. It came on a cold rainy April night in Baltimore back in 1987. Juan Nieves, a 22-year-old making only his 37th big league appearance, defeated the Orioles 7-0 with the help oftwo diving catches

in the outfield and at least three sensational plays in the infield. His pitch-count was high. He walked five batters in the game. He also struck out seven. But of the remaining 20 outs, only three were ground balls – one of them turned into a double play. The rest were line drives or pop flies, including a diving grab by Robin Yount to end the drama.

Here are a few that got away:

FOR OPENERS

APRIL 13, 1973 – Bill Parsons took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Paul Blair singled with two outs. Parsons settled for a one-hit, 2-0 victory over the Orioles on Opening Day at County Stadium. However, he needed relief help from Jerry Bell in the eighth inning to secure the win. Pedro Garcia and Ollie Brown each hit home runs to account for the Brewers offense.

APRIL 2, 2007 – Sandwiched between a second inning home run and ninth inning double, Ben Sheets retired 22 straight batters and settled for a two-hit, complete game, 7-1, victory over the Dodgers at Miller Park.

TRIPLE SKIP

MAY 30, 1972 – Skip Lockwood gave up a run-scoring single to Rusty Torres in the sixth inning which ruined his no-hit and shutout bid. Nonetheless, Lockwood earned a 3-1 complete-game victory over the Yankees at County Stadium.

JUNE 26, 1972 – A month later, Skip Lockwood combined with reliever Bill Castro to down the Orioles 3-0 in Baltimore.Lockwood gave upa harmless one-outsingle to Bobby Grichin the fourth inning. Heworked into the ninthinning but neededreliever Ken Sandersto get the final twoouts. No Orioles playeradvanced past secondbase in the game.

AUGUST 1, 1972 – In a rain-shortened six-inning game, Skip Lockwood retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced before allowing a lead-off double to Mickey Stanley in the final frame at Detroit. Lockwood earned a 9-0 complete-gamewin, facing only twoover the minimumbatters.

Besides three one-hitters, Lockwood also had a pair of two-hitters as a Brewers starter. Oddly enough both came on the same date – September 15.

The first was a complete-game, 1-0 win over the A’s in 1970 and the second a 1-0 complete-game loss to the Twins in 1971 – both games in Milwaukee.

ONE BAD PITCH

MAY 9, 1973 – Jim Colborn went the distance and earned a 5-1 victory over the Rangers at County Stadium, allowing just one hit – a one-out

solo home run off the bat of Jeff Burroughs in the fifth inning. Colborn faced just three batters over the minimum.

JUNE 29, 1985 – Moose Haas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a one-out double to Don Mattingly. Haas went the distance for a 6-0 win over the Yankees in New York.

AUGUST 19, 1985 – Danny Darwin won a

complete-game, 4-1, victory over the Twins at County Stadium surrendering just one hit – a fifth inning leadoff home run by Roy Smalley – retiring the final 15 batters he faced. Darwin faced just two batters over the minimum.

SEPTEMBER 1, 1987 – Teddy Higuera pitched 7.2 no-hit innings before an eighth inning triple by the Royals’ Ross Jones spoiled his bid. He would complete the game allowing just the one hit as the Brewers won a 2-0 decision at Kansas City. Higuera walked two with nine strikeouts, facing three batters over the minimum.

JUNE 15, 1988 – Teddy Higuera tossed seven no-hit innings before surrendering a lead-off home run to the Mariners’ Steve Balboni in the eighth. He settled for a 5-1 victory at County Stadium. Higuera pitched eight full innings then needed three relievers to ice the one-hitter.

JULY 28, 1997 – In his Major League debut against Roger Clemens, Steve Woodard gave up a lead-off double to Blue Jays’ Otis Nixon before retiring 21 of the next 22 batters, including the final 17. With help from reliever

Mike Fetters in the ninth inning, Woodard earned a one-hit, 1-0 victory, fanning 12 batters in the process.

AUGUST 31, 2008 – In a controversial call, CC Sabathia had to settle for a one-hitter in a complete-game, 7-0, victory over the Pirates at PNC Park. A dribbler back to the mound off the bat of Andy LaRoche leading off the fifth inning spoiled Sabathia’s bid for a no-hitter. Sabathia clearly muffed the comebacker but the official scorer determined it a hit instead of an error. The call was protested by the Brewers to no avail.

APRIL 23, 2009 – Dave Bush took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before Philadelphia’s Matt Stairs spoiled his bid with a one-out pinch-hit solo home run. Bush gave up another hit before leaving but the Brewers won the game 6-1 at Miller Park.

MAY 7, 2011 – Yovani Gallardo’s bid for a no-hitter was ruined by the Cardinals Daniel Descalso’s lead-off single in the eighth inning. Gallardo settled for a one-hit, 4-0, victory in St. Louis.

MAY 26, 2019 – A sixth inning lead-off home run by the Phillies Andrew Knapp was the only blemish on

Brandon Woodruff’s line as he and reliever Matt Albers combined for a one-hit, 9-1, victory at Miller Park. Woodruff, who fanned 10 batters in eight innings of work, retired the first 15 batters he faced until the homer.

APRIL 7, 2021 – Brandon Woodruff retired 18 straight Cubs in perfect order – eight by way of thestrikeout – before Ian

Happ greeted him with a clean single to right to open the seventh inning. Woodruff set down the next three batters before giving way to the bullpen in the eighth inning, leading 1-0. But the Cubs scratched out a run forcing the game into extra innings where the Brewers went on to prevail, 4-2.

Freddy Peralta nearly pitched a no-hitter as he led the Brewers to a 5-1 victory over the Diamondbacks at American Family Field. Peralta took his gem into the eighth inning before Nick Ahmed spoiled it with a one-out single to left. It marked the fourth time Peralta pitched at least five innings with only one hit allowed during the season – a franchise-best.

INTO THE NINTH

SEPTEMBER 5, 1981 – Jim Slaton took ano-hitter into the ninthinning against theTwins in Minneapolis.Slaton retired 20 ofthe first 21 battershe faced. In the ninthinning all was lost.Back-to-back lead-offsingles and an ensuinghome run halted bothhis bid for a no-hitterand a shutout. Slatonneeded relief help

from Rollie Fingers to salvage a 5-3 victory.

MAY 28, 1988 – Other than Nieves’ no-hitter, the closest any Brewers pitcher came to pitching a gem was 8.1 innings. When Odell Jones made his first big league start in four seasons – one of only two with Milwaukee – he retired the initial22 Indians batters hefaced before givingup a walk to Mel Hallwith one out in theeighth inning. It wasthe furthest a Brewerspitcher had gone in abid for a perfect game.In the ninth, Jonesfanned Dave Clarkto open the frame.Pinch-hitter RonWashington followedand stroked a 1-1 pitchto right field for a cleansingle to end Jones’sno-hit bid and his dayon the mound.
