Oathbringerby Brandon Sanderson

If you liked George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones, you're in for a treat. Brandon Sanderson is a multi-award-winning author who helped finish Robert Jordan's acclaimed Wheel of Time series after Jordan passed. Oathbringer is the third instalment in Sanderson's epic fantasy series The Stormlight Archive. His writing features amazing character development, intricate plots, fantasy action galore, unique and complex magic systems, and beautifully detailed worlds. This is Sanderson's first epic length series with no foreseeable end. As an eternal war between races and gods threatens to overwhelm the human kingdoms, ancient traditions and history reveal that humanity has been here before. As history and lore are forgotten, humanity squanders their time, a mistake which they may pay for dearly.

The term “carry forward” suggests transferring something on to the next generation, yet also takes account of gains and loss. This exhibition brings together artworks that engage with, question, and re-form the authority and authenticity of documents and documentation. Through painting, documentary, installation, video, and photography, artists examine historical texts or imagery, and lend emphasis to absence, omission, or the redaction of detail.

RACHEL ECHENBERG: HOw TO ExPLAIN PERFORMANCE ART TO MY TEENAGE DAuGHTERCurated by Blair Fornwald, Curator, Moving Image and Performance

Referencing Joseph Beuys' 1965 performance, How to explain pictures to a dead hare, where the artist, face covered in gold leaf and honey, toured his exhibition with a dead hare in his arms, Montreal-based artist Rachel Echenberg and daughter Clara Echenberg-Worsnip tenderly cover each other's faces and heads with honey and gold leaf, placing both in the role of artist-teacher.

In conjunction with the Central Gallery exhibition, Are You My Mother?, Dunlop Art Gallery is pleased to present a new performance artwork by Montreal-based artist Chun Hua Catherine Dong, whose works address painful and commonly-felt emotions like shame, loss, and grief from a personal, gendered, and culturally-specific perspective.

ARE YOu MY MOTHER?Curated by Jennifer Matotek, Director/Curator

Whether the relationships are close, strained, or absent, being parented (or disconnected from caregivers) is a universal experience. Are You My Mother? considers what is shared about the experience of being raised, while underscoring the circumstances that shape how we feel about our caregivers. This examination of the aesthetics of caring extends to people and places beyond bloodlines.

DIANE BOS: THE SLEEPING GREENCurated by Josephine Mills, Circulated by the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery

Diane Bos's The Sleeping Green is an extraordinary collection of photographs taken with vintage and pinhole cameras, documenting the 'no-man's land' between trenches on the Western Front, a century later. By incorporating objects from the battle sites into the darkroom printing process, dodging, burning, and overlaying the photographs with maps of stars, Bos conveys the emotional depth of these landscapes.
