While preparing the research paper a lot of peoplehelped me on various occasions. Among these people are the Class
mates, Course instructor, Teaching assistant and the people who
responded during my survey. In this regard, I would like to give
my special thanks to my Abdus Selim, who is a respected faculty
member of English department of NSU and my course instructor
Maleka Sarwar. She was always by my side whenever I faced any
problem. I also want to take the chance to thank Mr Naveed Mahbub
who gave me time to take his interview. At every moment I
remember all the people who really encouraged me in every stage
of my field work (survey) with their support. The encouragement
and suggestions, what I got from them, really helped me a lot to
make this report to be successful. Without their guidance and
friendly co-operation, this job would not be possible. Special
thanks, to my parents for always supporting me. Last but not the

least, my gratitude along with thanks goes to The Almighty Allah
for keeping everything on the right track.

Ab
stractThis research paper discusses about standup comedy clubs in
Bangladesh .Humor is everywhere. Without humor life would have
been dull. It is said that laughter is the best medicine. When
our mind is free of burden our productivity rate of work
increases. Laughter, comedy, humor help us there. Humor emerges
as an important coping mechanism; it increases immunity and
reduces pain and stress. In this case comedy club can be a fine
source for entertainment. Other countries have comedy clubs where
people go and enjoy their time by the performance of the standup
comedians. A standup comedian is a comedian who performs comedy
in front of live audiences. So I wanted to find out whether
comedy clubs can be part of the entertainment sector in our
country and people’s attitude towards it. I conducted the survey
on different aged upper middle class and upper class people. I
asked responders different kind of questions. Recently in Dhaka a
comedy club has been launched for the first time. This is a new
culture for our country. We as a nation always love good
Page | 5
entertainment. It helps up to make our complicated life easier.
That’s why I was very eager to work with this topic. Before
starting this I was hoping to get positive result about the
comedy club in Bangladesh and I found out that people are showing
positive attitude towards it. People know that other countries
have standup comedy clubs and majority of the responders think
that we should have comedy clubs like other countries.

In
troduction people of Bangladesh always welcome new things.
They lead a very busy life. So when they find something new they
get excited. In our country there are very few things that
entertain our people. We as a nation are very fun loving. People
of Bangladesh always shows positive attitude towards new things.
We should have standup comedy clubs like other countries for the
entertainment of our people. People watch many shows on
televisions but standup comedy is performed live in front of the
people. Comedy club is a venue where people watch or listen to
performance of the comedians.Stand-up comedy is a comedic art
form in which a comedian performs in front of a live audience,
speaking directly to them. The performer is commonly known as a
comic, stand-up comic, stand-up comedian or simply a stand-up.
Their performances are sometimes filmed for later release via
DVD, the internet, and television (Stand-up comedy, 2011). In
stand-up comedy the comedian usually tells funny stories and
short jokes. Some standup comedians use music or magic to improve
Page | 8
their acts. Stand up comedies are usually performed in comedy
clubs, bars, colleges and theaters. Comedy club is mainly a
western culture. Standup is an art form that is openly devoted to
getting immediate laughs from an audience above all else, unlike
theatrical comedy which creates comedy within the structure of a
play with amusing characters and situations. In stand-up comedy,
feedback of the audience is instant and crucial for the
comedian's act (Stand-up comedy 2011). In standup comedy clubs
Audiences expect a stand-up comedian to provide a firm stream of
laughs, and a comedian is always under great pressure to deliver
from audiences.
Comedy clubs are mainly western culture. Perhaps nothing in the
'1970s gave rise to stand-up comedy more than the birth of the
comedy club. On both coasts, new clubs were opening that allowed
comics to get in front of audiences every night of the week
(Bromley, n.d.). Both America and United Kingdom has history of
standup comedy clubs. The United Kingdom has a long heritage of
stand-up comedy, which began in the music halls of the 18th and
19th centuries and in America standup comedy clubs started in
Page | 9
19th century (Stand-up comedy, 2011). London city is the biggest
and the best for standup comedy clubs. Countries even like India
have comedy clubs in their different cities. . In Standup comedy
clubs the comedy show is for 40-45 minutes because of this people
don’t get bored by watching long shows. We know that humor
is everywhere. In Bangladesh people have great sense of humor.
Standup comedy club is a place where people can go alone or with
their family to enjoy live standup comedy. Bangladesh has very
few places where people can go and enjoy with their family
members. So if we have comedy clubs like other countries I think
people will take comedy clubs as place where they can go and
enjoy. Recently in Dhaka a comedy club has been launched for the
first time. This is a new culture for our country. So people are
slowly getting interested in comedy clubs. Still Bangladeshi
people have little knowledge about comedy clubs. Comedy club is a
safe and peaceful place where people can go and enjoy comedy
shows. People of Bangladesh love this kind of place because in
Bangladesh there are very few safe and peaceful places for
entertainment. . My research will indicate the attitude of
Bangladeshi people towards comedy and the future prospect of
Page | 10
comedy clubs in Bangladesh. If the research result is positive,
we can assume that comedy clubs would be a new place for
entertainment in Bangladesh.

Background
Comedy routines and the stage have been with us ever since the
days of vaudeville. Often used as the opening or warm-up act for
the headlining music troupe or dance act, comedy acts would take
their stand-up routines across the country. Sometimes the act
would be a single comedian who would rely on sight gags and quick
repartee to get the audience primed and ready for the headliners.
At other times, two or more comedians would work together,
usually with one person playing the serious role and the other
being the wacky part of the team. The format caught on, and soon
stand-up comedy teams were as famous as all the other vaudeville
acts. After vaudeville died the mixture of comedy and clubs
continued to be a popular attraction. In fact, many of the most
famous comedy duos of the 20th century built up their fan base by
touring the comedy club circuit (Tatum, 2003).
During the 1960s and 1970s, a new facet of the comedy
club began to emerge, as more and more clubs held amateur nights.
The chance to try out routines in front of a live audience was a
Page | 12
boon for those who hoped to make it in the field of stand-up
comedy. The audience, in turn, had the chance to discover new
talent ahead of anyone else. The chance to hone their craft in a
comedy club made it possible for some of the most highly regarded
comedians of the late 20th century to eventually come to national
prominence (Tatum, 2003).
When it comes to layout, the comedy club will vary in the
ambiance that it projects. Some clubs today are like auditoriums,
with stadium seating and a full sized stage. You will see bright
lights and visual effects all through the shows. Others are
smaller and more intimate, with tables and chairs for the
customers and a small stage area for the performer. Most offer
drinks of some kind, and in some clubs you can get a full meal to
enjoy during the show.
The comedy club is alive and well today. Some comedy
clubs still host amateur nights, as well as provide entertainment
by the current ruling class of comedic geniuses that most of us
know by name. Cable TV and the Internet have made it possible for
a number of high profile comedy club outlets to also be seen by a
Page | 13
much wider audience, making some of them into Mecca’s for the
star-struck. However, the nice thing is that you don’t
necessarily have to rely on your computer and television to take
you into a comedy club. Chances are you live within driving
distance of a local comedy club (Tatum, 2003).
How to do comedy is very important because without it
audiences will not response positively. In a stand-up comedy club
people also have to respect the comedian.
On standup comedy it is profitable to compare it to public
speaking in general. The aim of a comedian as well as a public
speaker is to keep the attention of the audience and create
positive audience response. Studies have shown that one is not
just born to be a good speaker but that one can improve one’s
performance by studying what actually happens in a performance by
a good speaker. Good public speaker does not only speak but they
manipulate the audience in order to get good response (Atkinson,
1984, p.12).
Page | 14
Standup comedy is not just only talking, it is trying
to make people laugh. If the comedian is successful in making
people laugh, he will get a good response for his club.
stand-up is not so much public speech as it is talk. Though it
may be “heavily one sided,” it is nevertheless a dialogic form
“that allows for reaction, participation, and engagement on the
part of those to whom the stand-up comedian is
speaking”(Brodie ,2009, p.4). The genre fundamentally requires an
audience; all broadcasts and recordings of stand-up comedy,
without exception, are made in front of a live audience (Brodie ,
2009). The tone of stand-up talk too is generally as direct as
that of any face to face talk, with comics speaking in the first
person to an audience they address in the second person. Such
choices are motivated and utterly appropriate; as Karin Barber
describes the effect, “Discourse in the first and second persons
[…] tends to evoke a response from the hearer, sucking the
discourse into the here-and-now” (Barber,2003, p.326).
Comedian uses many things to earn the support of the
audience, so that their clubs becomes popular and successful.
Communicative context that comic share their disgrace,
Page | 15
embarrassment and failures, as well as their attempts at
cleverness. To such discussion they add all they talk through use
of several of the other social codes that speak through behavior—
dress, attitude, sign, spatial organization—which they regularly
mix up in playfully unpredictable ways that add to that sense of
informality born of code inconsistency (Irvine, 1979, p. 777).
Hay’s (2001) model of Humor Support highlights the importance of
the receiver of a joke recognizing, understanding and
appreciating a joke in order for it to be successful. Further,
Jerry Palmer (1994) argues that comic meaning is dependent on a
number of interrelated factors: the settings and contexts in
which a joke is told, the competence of its delivery, the
identity of the teller, and the audience of the joke.
Relationship between audience and the comedian is very
important, this makes a comedy club successful.
This important relationship between the stand-up
comedian and the audience is carefully negotiated before the
comedian appears on stage via a judiciously organized
introduction given by the compeer (Rutter, 2000).
Page | 16
Stand-up comedy is very much connected to audience.
The success of standup comedy clubs depends on the comedian
performance and how the comedian can connect with audience. The
comedian always has to keep the attention of the audiences.
Culture is very important. Half of the success of the standup
comedy club depends on culture .The comedian has to make jokes
according to the culture of the country, so that people can
accept the jokes and enjoy the comedy show. Relationship with
the audience is very important. If the comedian is able make good
relationship with the audience, comedian comedy club will be a
success.
We have a standup comedy club in Banani which was recently
opened. The owner and comedian of the comedy club is Naveed
Mahbub. Naveed’s comedy club is the first standup comedy club in
Bangladesh. The club was open on March 5, 2010 at Banani, Dhaka.
All aged people are allowed. The comedy club is getting positive
response from the people.

Research
QuestionsMy research will address the following research questions:
1. What is standup comedy?
2. Can stand up comedy make our complicated life easier?
3. What are the difference between comedy shows on TV and standup
comedy?
4. Can comedy club be a part of our society in Bangladesh?
5. Which countries are famous for standup comedy?
6. Do we have any comedy clubs in Bangladesh?
7. What type of attitude will people show toward comedy clubs?
Hypothesis People’s of our country love to have fun. They
always appreciate good things. Standup up comedy clubs will be
perfect for our country. Standup comedy is a style in which a
Page | 18
person or a group tries to entertain the people. I think standup
comedy will make our complicated life easier because standup
comedy is very funny and entertaining. Standup comedy clubs are
one of the best places for having fun with your friends or
family. People also watch comedy shows on TV but there are
differences between standup comedy and comedy shows on TV. When
we are watching a comedy show on TV you can’t experience the live
acts and can’t feel the performances of the comedians. In Standup
comedy people are watching the act live so they can enjoy more.
Britain and America are very famous for standup comedy. They have
many comedy clubs.
We also have a comedy club in Banani, Dhaka, which is doing very
well. I think comedy clubs can be a part of our society because
it is a wonderful place for entertainment. I assume people will
show positive attitude towards standup comedy clubs. So we should
have comedy clubs like other counties.

Methodology In this research I used two types of data,
primary and secondary. Upper middle class and upper class people
were my target group.
Primary data:
As an essential part of my research paper, primary
data got the most importance in my research. I have followed only
two methods interviewing as well as survey, to collect primary
data. I have taken interview from two categories--- a comedian
and a faculty member of North South University who knows a lot
about standup comedy. They have helped me a lot by providing
information according to their thoughts and knowledge. I also did
a survey to know what people think about standup comedy. The
responders were different aged upper middle class and upper class
Page | 20
people.
Secondary data:
To collect my secondary data, I used standup comedy
related books, e-books, journal articles, internet article,
newspaper articles etc. . I also browsed the internet for
information. For example: Google, yahoo and Wikipedia.
Data Presentation
and Analysis
The data was gathered through survey and analysis is done
according to results found form the questions. There were total
of 10 questions and the survey was conducted among 30 people.
Page | 21
Here the results and analysis are given below according
to these questions, along with some charts & graphs with the most
important questions-
Question 1: How is humor related to physical and mental health?

How is humor related to physical and mental health ?
Increases immunity and reduces painReduces stressDoes not help at all
The purpose of this question was to find out what people
think about humor and do they think humor is related to physical
and mental health. From the survey I found that 33% of the
respondents think that humor increases immunity and helps to
reduce pain. On the other hand 64% of the respondents think that
it reduces pain. Rest 3% thinks that it doesn’t help at all. So
Page | 22
it is clear that humor is related to physical and mental health.
People would love to be in touch of humor while they are in
stress or pain. It indicates that comedy club could be a great
place for people where they can enjoy comedy to reduce their pain
or stress. Humor is increasing immunity and reducing pain so we
can see that people are taking humor as positively. Some
respondents think that when they are in stress humor helps them
to reduce their stress. Some respondents think that humor does
not help at all because humor is not reducing their pain or
stress. Here we can see that people are using humor in a positive
way. Very few respondents are not taking humor seriously.
Question 2: Do you watch comedy programs on television?

Do you watch comedy programs on TV ?
Now a day’s comedy programs on television
channels are very popular. It is a very good source of
entertainment. The purpose of this question was to find whether
people watch comedy programs on television or not. So we asked
people whether they watch these kinds of program or not and found
that 30% of them always watch comedy program and 66.7% watch
comedy programs but not on a regular basis. Only 3.33%
respondents said that they don’t watch comedy programs on
television because they are not interested in comedy programs. So
we found out that majority of the respondents watch comedy
programs only if they are free. Watching comedy programs on
Page | 24
television are very much related to time because majority of the
respondents are not watching programs if they are not free. Here
we can see that 30% of our responders always watch comedy
programs on televisions. So we can say that this 30 % people are
very much fond of comedy programs. 3.33% people are not
interested in comedy programs. They don’t watch comedy programs
on televisions at all. So I think if we have comedy clubs in
Bangladesh, it will not be a bad idea and people will show
positive attitude towards it.
Question 3: Do you feel in order to laugh or have some comedy in
our daily life it is necessary to go to the comedy club?
The purpose of this question was to find out people
thinking about comedy clubs and do they think it necessary to go
to comedy club to in order to laugh or have some comedy in our
daily life. From the survey I found out that 36.7% of the
respondents think that it is necessary to go to the comedy clubs
in order to laugh or have some comedy in our daily life because
it is a good source of entertainment. Majority of respondents
63.3% think s that it is not necessary to go to a comedy club to Page | 25
laugh or have comedy in our daily life because we have other
sources of entertainment. This is actually true since we don’t
have comedy clubs like other countries still we can’t say that we
don’t have humor in our life. Even without comedy clubs people of
our country have comedy in their life. 36.7% people feel that
comedy club will help us to laugh or have comedy in our daily
life. I interview Professor Abdus Selim who is a faculty member
in North South University and according to him he thinks it is
not necessary but one can go there for experiencing something new
and have fun. According to Comedian Naveed Mahbub if people
really want to laugh or have fun, they should visit comedy clubs.
I think they are right in their own way because comedy club is a
new culture in our country and it’s a new source of
entertainment. It will entertain people in a new way.

The purpose of this question was to find out what the
respondents think about their own countries people’s sense of
humor . 40% of the respondents think that Bangladeshi people have
great sense of humor. 36.7% of the respondents think that
Bangladeshi people have moderate sense of humor. 23.3% of the
respondents think that Bangladeshi have low level of sense of
humor. It is true that in Bangladesh sense of humor varies from
person to person. This is the main reason why 36.7% people went
for option B (Moderate sense of humor). This 40% indicates that a
Page | 27
lot of people of Bangladesh have a positive attitude towards
comedy. So it is assumable that quite lot of people will show a
positive attitude towards standup comedy clubs. They will go
standup comedy clubs to have fun.
Question 5: Do you know other countries even India have comedy

Do you know other countries even India have comedy clubs in their
different cities?YesNoNever heard about comedy clubd
The purpose of this question was to find out about
people’s knowledge about comedy clubs and if they know that there
are comedy clubs in different countries even in India. Majority
of the respondents 74% knows that other countries even India have
comedy clubs in their different cities. 13% of respondents do notPage | 28
know that other countries have comedy clubs in their different
cities even India. Surprising that 13% of the respondents never
heard about comedy clubs. They didn’t have any idea about comedy
clubs. They are among those respondents who do not watch comedy
programs on television. 13% of the respondents heard about comedy
clubs but they don’t know which specific countries have comedy
clubs. But most of the respondents are aware about other
countries comedy club which is good indication for Bangladeshi
comedy clubs. These 74% of the respondents are those who either
have knowledge about comedy clubs or those who watch comedy shows
on television. So I think if we have comedy clubs like other
countries Bangladeshi people will show positive attitude towards
it.
Question 6: Do you think Bangladesh should have comedy clubs like

Do you think Bangladesh should have comedy clubs like other
countries ? Do you think Bangladesh should have comedy clubs like other countries ?
The purpose of this question was to find out what
people think about having standup comedy clubs in Bangladesh like
other countries. 76.7% of the respondents think that Bangladesh
should also have comedy clubs like other countries because it is
a place of entertainment. These are those who watch comedy
programs on television regularly. Only 23.3% of the respondents
think that it is not important to have comedy clubs like other
countries. These are those people who think we don’t need comedy
clubs because we have other sources of entertainment. So, we can
say that our respondents have a positive attitude towards both
Page | 30
comedy and comedy clubs. As 77% of the respondents think that
comedy clubs are place of entertainment so I think we should have
comedy clubs like other countries. From the survey we previously
found out that people are watching comedy programs on televisions
and among them some are very fond of comedy programs so if we
have comedy clubs like other countries I think people will go to
comedy clubs to enjoy standup comedy. Responders are very
positive about having comedy clubs like other countries.
Question 7: A great place for entertainment could be (Rank from
1st-4th) _
This was a rank order question. The purpose of this
question was to find out the ranking of comedy clubs. Comedy
class was compared with other entertainment sources, music
concert, music café, movie and theater and others. 26.7%
respondents chose comedy club as their 1st choice, 36.7% chose
comedy club as their 2nd choice, 13.33% chose as their t3rd
choice and 20% as their 4th choice. 23.3% of the respondents
chose music concert as their 1st choice and 16.7% as their 2nd.
30% of the respondents chose movie and theater as their 1st
Page | 31
choice and 33.3% as their 2nd choice. 16.7% of the respondents
chose music café as their 1st choice and 30% as their 2nd choice.
Lastly only 3.3% of the respondents chose others as their 1st
choice. 86.7% of them didn’t rank others among first four. We can
see here that most people prefer movie and theater as their 1st
choice and comedy club as their 2nd choice. So we can say comedy
club has a bright future in Bangladesh as most of the people
picked it as their 2nd choice for a great place of entertainment.
So there is great chance that people would consider comedy club
as their 1st choice if there are big comedy clubs in Bangladesh.
Question 8: Do you know there is a comedy club at Baridhara in
Dhaka?
Recently a comedy club has opened at Baridhara, Dhaka.
The club is run by Naveed Mahbub who is the owner of the club and
also a standup comedian. So we asked people whether they knew
about this or not. We found that 60% of the respondents did not
know about it. This was obvious since there was no massive
publicity about the club except in Facebook. Other 40% people
heard about the club may be from the Facebook or from their
Page | 32
friends. So we needed to make people aware about the comedy club
to get the highest response. If more comedy clubs are launch in
Bangladesh people will know more about standup comedy clubs. But
we can see a positive side here, 40% of the respondents know
about comedy clubs despite there are very few standup comedy
clubs in our country. So I think standup comedy has a bright
future in Bangladesh.

The purpose of this question was to find out if
people are interested to go to standup comedy clubs now that they
know what standup comedy club is. We can see here 26.7% of the
respondents would love to go to standup comedy club. These are
those people who watch comedy programs regularly, ranked comedy
club as their 1st choice and want standup comedy clubs in
Bangladesh. 10% of the respondents don’t want to go to comedy
clubs. These are those people who never heard about comedy clubs
and those who think Bangladesh should not have comedy clubs like
other countries because it is not important. Majority of the
responders 63.7% would go to comedy clubs if they are free. So we
can see here that most of them want to go there if they have
time. I know why they chose option C (may be, if I am free),
because Bangladeshi is developing country. People of Bangladesh
are hard working and they are always busy with their work. So
people want to go to standup comedy clubs when they are free. We
can take it as a positive sign towards comedy clubs prospect in
Bangladesh. More people will want to go to comedy clubs when they
Page | 34
will hear more about comedy clubs from their friends or from
other medium like newspaper, magazines or radio.
Question 10: How can a comedy club contribute to our
entertainment?
This is an open ended question. The purpose behind
asking this question was to find out opinion about how a comedy
club can contribute to our entertainment. Some said comedy club
help them to refresh their mind, reduce their pain and stress.
After a long day of hard working if there could be a place where
people can go and laugh without any inhibition then definitely
people would want to go there. Some said comedy club will help to
build a nation with a great sense of humor where some other said
comedy club may help heart disease long-suffering. Some of the
respondents said comedy clubs will add something new to our
entertainment sources. Then again comedians also use satire in
their performance. It also helps to create awareness what wrongs
are happening around us. According to Professor Abdus Selim (onePage | 35
of the person I interviewed) Bangladesh have fewer sources for
entertainment. He thinks that comedy clubs can bring some
difference in entertainment source. According to Mr. Naveed
Mahbub who is a standup comedian, comedy clubs entertain us
differently comparing to other entertainment sources. So we can
say most of the respondents think comedy club will contribute to
our society in a positive way.
Summary of Research
Findings
After analyzing these questions it is found that as a nation we like to have fun and want entertainment in our daily
life. We have good sense of humor. Comedy club is a great place
for pulling up the sense of humor. Majority of my respondents
think that we should have comedy clubs like other countries. Most
respondents chose comedy clubs as their 2nd for a great place for
entertainment. Majority of the respondents know that other
countries even India have comedy clubs. On the other side
Page | 36
majority of them didn’t knew that we have a comedy club in Dhaka,
this is because of less publicity and advertisement. After
knowing about comedy clubs some people were very interested to go
to comedy clubs though most of them would like to go to comedy
clubs, if they are free. This is logical because people of our
country pass very busy time.
According to comedian Mr. Naveed Mahbub we should have
comedy clubs because it will give us the chance to enjoy
something different. Professor Abdus selim thinks that we should
have comedy clubs. According to him Bangladesh have very few
sources for entertainment and comedy clubs can be part of our
society because most part of the jokes are related to social and
political matters. Mr. Naveed Mahbub thinks people will show
positive attitude towards it because he is getting positive
response for his standup comedy club.
After analyzing the data we can see that most of my
assumptions are correct. People are showing positive attitude
towards standup comedy clubs. They want comedy clubs like other
countries. They think it will be a great place for entertainment.
Mr Naveed mahbub and Professor Abdus Selim also think that we
Page | 37
should have comedy clubs. According to them it will make our
complicated life easier because it is a great place for
entertainment. So I think from this analysis I got positive
results about standup comedy clubs.
Recommendations
In Bangladesh few people are aware of comedy club and
its activities. To make people aware about comedy club, we need
to follow some promotional strategy. Once people become aware
about comedy club, they will be interested in comedy clubs’
comedy shows. As many \ people are getting interested about
comedy club in Bangladesh, we should try to use this interest to
make profit by establishing more big comedy clubs and making huge
promotion of the comedy shows so that people can consider standup
comedy shows as their 1st choice for entertainment.

Conclusi
on Life is spicy with humor. We can’t separate ourselves
from humor. A true standup comedian always finds something funny.
