This course is web-enhanced through Blackboard, with some work and most testing done online. You’re expected to have basic computer skills necessary for doing academic work online. I will help you get familiar with the online part of the course during the first couple of weeks. When using your personal computer for online work, you are responsible for any technical problems EXCEPT verified Blackboard server problems, which are rare. Almost all issues can be traced to the student’s computer, so be sure to use the latest version of Firefox (no other browser) and keep all software up-to-date. Electronic devices, including tablets and phones, do not always dependably support Blackboard, so use a familiar computer for all your testing. This syllabus provides direction and focus to help you stay on track. It’s essentially a contract, an agreement between you and the instructor (me) about performance, conduct, and grading. In it, I describe the structure and requirements of the course, and explain your responsibilities as a student. If you are unable to devote the time required to do the work (especially if you plan to take vacation other than during Spring Break), you should drop the course before the Drop/Add period ends and take it at a later date. If you’re unwilling to abide by the information in the syllabus and in Blackboard, you should also drop the course. Remaining enrolled after the Drop/Add date means that you understand and accept the requirements, policies, and instructions spelled out here. On Tuesday, January 17, log in to your My SMCCà Online Coursesà Blackboard (Bb icon), find our course on your Blackboard page, and start familiarizing yourself with the online portion.
