1.NAKSHI KANTHA / A TRADITIONAL CRAFT OF BANGLADESH

Every culture has its own distinctive features that make it differently appealing to other communities. Nakshi Kantha is one of such cultural traits which we pride on. Nakshi Kantha is a popular traditional craft of Bangladsh It is a kind of embroidered quilt. The name was taken from the Bengali word, Naksha' which means artistic pattern. The art has been practiced in rural Bengal for centuries. Traditional kanthas are made for family use. To make nakshi kantha old or new cloth and coloured tl reads are used. First the cloth is folded, then the folds are joined together using stich along the border line. On it varieties of patterns and figures are sewn using treads of various colours. These patterns and figures include geometrical patterns, pictures of flowers, leaves, birds, animals, men and women, instruments of daily use etc. Nakshi kanthas tell us a lot about the culture and daily life of the rural people. Village women make these in thier leisure time. In their hands a simple quilt of cloth becomes a piece of art. It takes a lot of time, even several months, to decorate the entire quilt. Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Rajshahi, Faridpur ,Bogra and Jessore are most famous for this craft. Now it is produced commercially. We can find these in many expensive handicraft shops in cities. The quilts are now in a great demand because of the colourful patterns and designs embroidered on them. Many handicraft shops and fashion houses are now a days exporting them outside the country. This recent trend is encouraging our traditional art of making nakshi kanthas. Nakshi Kantha is part of our glorious cultural heritage and therefore we should preserve it with all its original aesthetic aspects.

2.Ethnic Groups of Bangladesh / Ethnic People in Bangladesh A country or land is inhabited by people of various colours, creeds, castes, beliefs and practices. Therefore, ethnic group means a group of people from a particular cultural tradition or of a particular race. They are called ethnic minority if they live in a country where the majority of people are of a different cultural background or race. Bangladesh is populated by several ethnic groups. The majority of these people live in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The others live in the regions of Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Syihet. Among the ethnic people of Bangladesh, the most well known are the Chakmas, the Marmans, the Tipperas and the Moorangs who live in the Hill Tracts. The Sawtals live in Rajshahi. The Khasias and the Monipuries live in Syihet and the Hajangs and the Garos live in Mymensingh. The ethnic people live in forest areas, in the hills and in rural areas. They practice Jhum cultivation. They clear a piece of land in the forest, prepare it and sow seeds in it. They are mostly farmers. They speak their own mother tongues. They have their own lifestyles. They celebrate their own religious and social festivals. They have their own customs and values. They feel proud of their history, art and culture. Most of the ethnic people living in Bangladesh have some common characteristics. They build their

houses on bamboo or wooden platforms called 'machang.' Rice is their staple food. They eat vegetables, maize and fish, poultry and meat. Their kitchen utensils are bamboo, wooden and earthen foots which they make themselves. Men wear lungis and women wear kamis or sarrongs and angis. Women wear their own clothes. Hunting and fishing are their favorite pastimes. They are fond of songs, music, dances, theatre and fair. Traditional musical instruments that they use are bugles made 'from buffalo horns, drums and bamboo flutes. Wrestling is a popular sport for them. The ethnic people in Bangladesh hold a very important place in the' culture of the country. If all of us can live with tolerance, harmony and amity despite our differences, we can make a prosperous nation.

3.Bangladeshi Cuisine In general, cuisine means a style of cooking. So Bangladeshi cuisine means style of Bangladeshi cooking Bangladeshi cuisine is rich and varied with the use of many spices. We have delicious and appetizing food, snacks and sweets. Boiled rice is our staple food. It is usually served with a variety of vegetables, curry, fish and meat. Then fish is our main source of protein. Among numerous types of fishes carp, rui, katla, magur and chingri are common. Hilsha is very popular among the people of Bangladesh. Shutki or dried fishes are also popular. Panta ilish is a traditional platter of panta bhat. It is steamed rice soaked in water and served with fried hilsha slice, often together dried fish, pickles, lentil soup, green chili and onion. It is a popular dish on the Pahela Boishakh. The people of Bangladesh are fond of sweets. Sweets are distributed among close relatives and friends when there is good news like births, weddings, promotions, good result etc. There are hundreds of different varieties of sweet-The very common ones are roshgulla, sandesh, rasamalai, chom-chom etc. These are mostly milk based. Differe; types of pithas made from rice flour, sugar, syrup molasses and sometimes milk are traditional food in Bangladesh.

4.How to follow the rules of health/ How to Keep Fit / Rules of Good Health Our body is like a machine. It is an organic machine. As a machine requires maintenance, so does our body. We should abide by some good rules of health to keep our body fit and active First, we should cat the right kind of food which is called a balanced diet because a balanced die contains all the food value. We should drink plenty of water too. The kidneys are the body's filter. They cannot work efficiently without sufficient water it is an imperative for us to work, do exercise and rest in a proper manner, Physical exercise is a must for good health It helps our muscles and nerves work properly. It helps us to breathe more deeply and get more air into our lungs

It also helps the blood to travel all over the body and thus improve our immunity. We should have enough rest and sleep so that our tired limbs and organs can regain then energy acne normalcy. We should have a habit of keeping ourselves neat and clean. If we keep neat and clean we can prevent various diseases including contagious ones. We should go to bed early and rise early. We cannot afford to forget the much used maxim - 'Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and Wise." These all are the rules for good health and by following these rules we can keep fit.

5. A Balanced Diet

Our body is like a machine. It is an organic machine that requires food for running its functions However an unplanned selection of food does not help our body develop and function properly, food that comprises of all important ingredients like carbohydrate, protein, fat. mineral salts vitamins and water is called a balanced food or diet And this balanced diet fulfils the overall requirements of our body Carbohydrate provides us energy Protein makes up the decay and builds our body. Fat gives us energy and makes our bony structure plump and good looking. Vitamins play a very significant role in maintaining the balanced development of our body With, vitamins our body shows the symptom of various disorders and diseases. Water is present almost all foods Yet we need to drink water sufficiently: Water helps blood to circulate all through the body properly. A balanced diet ensures proper nutrition for the body. If our body is deprived of balanced diets tor a long time we may fall victim to various diseases. For a child, a balance. Set is very necessary for its proper growth and immunity development. So. for the sake of ensuring sound health we must include all these elements in our daily intake of food. A the same time, awareness should be among people in general and the youngsters in particular so that they can choose the right kinds of food and can avoid foods that only ruin the pocket, satisfy the palate, but are poor in nutrition and food value.

6. Hygiene/Health & Hygiene The word 'hygiene' means the practice of keeping ourselves clean and tidy. To keep our home, work places and surroundings clean is also called 'hygiene'. It is important for our good health. Without following the rules of hygiene, we cannot keep ourselves clean and so we cannot achieve anything physically, mentally or spiritually. To maintain hygiene, first, we must keep our body clean and have a bath everyday and wash our hair regularly. This will keep the body and hair free from dirt and bacteria. Secondly, we should wash our clothes regularly. Dirty clothes produce bad smell and attract germs. It is also very important to wash our hands with soap before

taking meals and after using the toilet. We should brush our teeth twice a day, after breakfast and supper. We must cut our nails regularly. Our drinking water must be pure. Finally, we should keep our surroundings and the environment clean. By following all the above things, we can lead a healthy and happy life.

7. Tha Kha Floating Market

A floating market is a market in the rural setting that sits on the bosom ot a river or a canal. Boats of various sizes arc the means to carry the produces at the market. Tha Kha floating market is such a floating market locateo on the surface of the river Tha Kha. One of the tributaries of Thailand The market is traditional in nature as both the buyers and sellers are local people and they deal in fresh local produces, The sellers were mainly elderly Thai women. They carry on their boats bundles of lotus fiowcrs, farm-fresh coconuts, fruits, vegetables, local food and delicious sweets. The prices of the good not being fixed earlier, the people are engaged in friendly bargaining, as they all hail from the surround villages. Originally, the Tha Kha floating market used to sit only six or seven days a month depending on the phase of the moon Nowadays, it also takes place on Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays Among the delicious dainties 'Pad Thai'. 'Kanom Krok' etc. that satisfy the palate of the buyers of the market. 'Pad Thai' is a kind of noodles with shrimps, tomatos and roasted peanuts and a Kanom Krok is a sweet coconut pancake. The "Tha Kha floating market serves the purpose of economic and social needs.

8. Airport Formalities

A journey by air is as luxurious and expensive as exciting. Before embarking on a plane a passenger has to go through a number of formalities in order to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. In an airport a passenger will find signposts that read 'Departure Passengers' showing passengers the way to the planes. Passengers go to the 'Check In' counter to get their boarding passes. Airline officials check whether that particular passenger has a booking on that particular flight and then issue a boarding pass. The next counter is the immigration counter. Passengers passport visas are checked and stamped here. Passengers are given embarkation forms to be filled in with correct information At the 'Customs Clearance' passengers are asked whether they have anything taxable to declare. At the 'Security Check' counter passengers are checked for any objects that could hamper the security of the flight. Objects such as firearms, sharp knives, flammables, cream or get over 100m are not allowed with carry-on luggage on board. The last sign passengers have to look for before boarding their plane is the right gate number. Every gate in an airport is marked. Passengers have to follow the announcement and go through the right gate to his/her flight. After going through all these formalities when the passengers reach the entrance of the plane, they are welcomed with warm and polite greetings by the airline crews.

9. Suvarnabhumi Airport Situated some 30 kilometers east of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the busiest air trips of Thailand. Originated from Sanskrit, the term 'Svarnabhumi' stands for a golden land. King Bhumibol Adulyadie chose this name for the airfield. The airport is located in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phil district of Samut Prakah province. The airport prides on having two parallel runways, each of which has - width of 60 metes. One of the runways is 4000 meter long and the other is 3,700 meters. It can handle 76 flight operations per .hour. Every year 45 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of cargo are handled through this airport. With an area of is 563,000 square metres, this airport passenger terminal is the fourth biggest passenger terminal building in the world. The airport is going through phase 2. It will increase the airport's capacity to handle in total 65 million passengers per year. The .two 5 storey car park buildings belonging to this beautiful airport can accommodate 5000 cars. Considering the facilities it /provides, Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the leading airports of the Asian region.

10. Dictionary

For a learner of a language, a dictionary is like a light-house. Without a dictionary it is not simply possible to enrich vocabulary of a particular language. Dictionary plays a vital role in order to increase our store of knowledge. It helps us to know the origin of words and their various uses. It also helps us look up the unknown word which enriches and enlightens our skill and competence. It follows the alphabetical order of letters. If we want to look up the word in the dictionary, we will follow some techniques and methods. It means words starting with the letter D will be before the words starting with the letter E. In other words, a dictionary is a collection of words. It lists the words of a language and gives necessary information about them. It tells us about the spelling, pronunciation, meaning and parts of speech of words. It also gives the synonyms and the antonyms of a word. Besides these, we find new words made by adding prefixes and suffixes to the root word. Pats of Speech are also shown. A verb word is always given in the simple present tense. Again the past form of a verb and the past participle are also shown. To find the words with a letter, look up the words at the top of the page. Therefore, a dictionary contributes to-boosting up our linguistic capacity by introducing us to the manifold uses of words and sentences.

11. Digital Bangladesh Bangladesh is one of the potential countries of the world. It has many resources to utilize. Though it becomes helpless by the recurrence visitation of floods, Cyclones and many other natural calamities. The people of this country face all the hazards with dauntless spirit loosing something. Now, the country has entered the era of modern information and technology. Every sector is going be furnished with modern touch of information and technology. Now, the world is in the grip of man. It is not difficult to know what is happening in the farthest corner of the world. People are benefited much through internet, computer, cell phone, Fax, E-mail and many other scientific inventions. The people of our country do not want to lag behind. They also use different types of modern things. (Through Electricity and computer based services, people are enjoying different kinds of facilities.) Modern Scientific technologies are used in offices, homes, educational Institutions, shops and factories. Everywhere an environment of digital activities is going on. It is not a bothersome and time consuming task to know the results of various examinations by mobile phone or internet addresses. So, we are lucky enough to live in Digital Bangladesh.

12. Dangers of Smoking

It is needless to say that smoking tobacco products is a dangerous habit and addiction. It may cause cancer, heart attack, chronic bronchitis and some other diseases; One puff of cigarette smoke contains fifteen billion particles of injurious matters like nicotine, methyl alcohol, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic and several other acids. Nicotine is so bad that it obstructs the flow of blood through the veins. This reduces the supply of oxygen in the body. It causes the rise of blood pressure and increases the heart beat thereby. The ultimate result is heart attack. Secondly, tobacco tar inside the lungs slows down the action of the cilia and at last it destroys them. But cilia is important for sweeping out the germs, mucus and dirt from the lungs thirdly, the presence of carbon monoxide in the tobacco smoke drives out the oxygen from the blood winches equally bad for health Besides, smoking can cause irritation in the eye. offend the nose and unsettle the mind. The stench of cigarette smoke is repulsive to non smoker. So smoking needs to be given up and it can be done with a bit of determination.

13. Our School Magazine A school magazine is a kind of journal published monthly or annually governed by the authority of a school. We have a magazine in our school. It is published annually. A magazine committee is formed for the publication of the magazine. The Headmaster of our school is the chief patron. A senior teacher is the advisor. The magazine committee invites writings from students and teachers. The writings include poems, articles, short-stories, jokes etc. The editorial board selects the proper ones for printing. After editing and proof-reading it becomes ready for publication and ultimately a beautiful magazine comes out for the students and the teachers. It is the result of united efforts. A school magazine is the mirror of a school and it brings out the latent creative talents of the students. It creates and nourishes new writers. A student feels proud and happy when he finds his own writing in a printed form in a book. It reflects the academic and co-curricular activities of a school. The students can learn and discover many things from the school magazine. So, all schools should try to publish at least one school magazine every year.

14. A Moonlit Night

A moonlit night is a heavenly experience of charm and enjoyment. It presents the beautiful sights of nature. It dazzles our eyes and soothes our hearts. On a moonlit night the moon appears to be a silver disk. The moon bathes the whole world with her silvery light. The watery places like canals, rivers and ponds seem to smile with shining glow of moonlit night. The whole nature looks bright and appears in a new look by the grace of celestial light. People of all ages enjoy a moonlit night. Especially the young children make merriments and amuse themselves. A moonlit night is really enjoyable to a newly married couple. It grows the mutual love between the two hearts. Men and women of all ages come out to gossip and tell stories to the youngers. A moonlit night is a special occasion for the poets and writers. They can enjoy the natural beauty to their hearts content. A moonlit night gives them the plot of a story or inspires a poet to write divine poetry. This is a thought-provoking night for the thinkers. Nature comes to a different beauty with the dim shiny light of moon. Even the lower animals come out at night to roam here and there. A moonlit night is a wonderful creation of God which is pleasant and fine indeed.

15. A Tea Stall A tea stall is a small shop where people often meet and have tea. It is almost known to the people both of towns and villages. The tea stalls in towns are generally seen at narrow places of the road sides. But they are at market places or at the bus-stops in rural areas. In many busy towns the customers do not have seats in such a stall and they have tea standing by it. On the other hand, in villages the tea stalls have chairs and benches to sit on. So some people stay here for hours and pass their time. Tea, biscuits and breads are usually sold here. One or more boys are employed here to serve tea to the customers. Though a tea stall is small, newspaper is available here. It is generally the centre for the people where they discuss about different affairs of home and abroad. A tea stall always remains hot from dawn till about midnight. Sometimes customers raise a storm over a cup of tea. In fact, a tea stall is now a days an important place of social gathering.

16. A Rainy Day A day when it rains all day long is called a rainy day. It is a dull and gloomy day. A rainy day looks very strange as the sky is overcast with thick clouds and the sun is not visible. None can go out without an umbrella. The roads become muddy and desolate. One can not move from one place to another easily. One does not generally come out without compulsion. The poor suffer much. They can not go out to earn their daily bread. Often there are flashes of lightning and roars of thunder in the sky. Birds are hardly seen to fly. Cattle keep standing in their sheds. In such a day, many people have to stay at home and pass the day without doing anything. It is a great joy to some of the students. Because they remain at home instead of going to school. Some people then spend time in gossiping, playing at cards, singing or sleeping. After all a rainy day-gives us both joy and sorrow. It comes to different classes of people in different ways .

17. My Parents Parents are the very source of our existence on earth- We can not live in this world without their caring touch. My parents are very careful and dutiful in all respects. My father is a doctor and my mother is a primary school teacher. They remain very busy with their respective duties and responsibilities. Still, my father spends much time in social activities. Whenever he gets time, he goes to our village home and gives free treatment to the people. My mother is also involved in different social works especially in helping the distressed poor women. My mother looks after our family very sincerely. She does every household work. She hopes to see us happy even at the cost of her own life. Her anxiety knows no bounds if we fall ill. She does not enjoy a wink of sleep. But her face beams with joy when we come round. My mother possesses a good sense of sanitation. She keeps our house neat and clean. My father also takes much care of all of us. I like my parents very much. I respect my parents profoundly. I am greatly indebted to them.

18. A Village Doctor A village doctor is a person who offers medical treatment to the villagers. He is a familiar figure in the villages. He is a popular person there. Generally he may not be a registered doctor but he receives some training by working under a qualified doctor for some years. His chamber is usually seen in a market. It is poorly furnished with a table, a chair, an admiral and a few benches. He comes to his chamber quite early in the morning. He then attends on his patients. He treats his patients very carefully. He gives them advice and medicine. After finishing his duty there, he goes out to see other patients in the villages. Sometimes he spends the whole night sitting beside a dying patient. His presence and affectionate touch fill the patients with hope and courage. But he takes small fees from the patients. Very often he gives free treatment to the poor. Really, a village doctor is an important figure to the villagers. He is loved and respected by all. He is not only a doctor but also a friend to the villagers. Nobody should neglect him.

19. A Bus Stand A bus stand is a busy place . It is a place where service buses stop and start from. After a fixed time a good number of up and down buses touch at a bus stand at different hours of the day and night. In cities there are sheds for passengers at a bus stand. It is a temporary shelter for passengers. Passengers wait for sometime to get on a bus. In some bus stands there are counters for ticket. Passengers stand in a line for buying tickets. Sometimes there is exchange of hot words if anybody breaks the line. One bus comes and the another starts for. The passengers coming here have no time to talk or to look at others. When a bus comes or starts for, passengers become busy in procuring a seat. They push one another to get into it. A bus stand is always noisy. There are tea-stalls, small shops, and hawkers selling betel leaf and cigarette at a bus stand. Magazines and seasonal fruits are also sold here. In fact, a bus stand is an important place for the passengers.

20. The ethnics of Bangladesh

The word 'ethnic' is connected with or belonging to a nation, race or people that shares a special cultural tradition. There are many ethnic races in Bangladesh. The ethnic people in Bangladesh hold a very important place in the culture of the country. The main ethnic races of Bangladesh are: Chakmas, the Marmans, the Tipperas, the Moorangs, the Santals, the Khasia, the Monipuries, the Hajangs, the Garos etc. The majority of these people live in Chittagong Hill tracts. The others live in the regions of Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Syihet. They live in areas, in the hills and in rural areas. They practise 'Jhum' cultivation. They clear a piece of land in the forest, prepare it and sow seeds on it. They are mostly farmers. By religion they are Hindus, Christians and Buddhists. They speak their own mother tongues. (e) What measures should be taken to make the tree plantation programme successful? Tree plantation means planting more trees here and there for our need. Trees are the greatest gift of nature. Trees grow naturally. They are grown by plantation as well. Trees are the part and parcel of our environment. Trees provide us with fragrant and beautiful flowers, delicious and nutritious food, cool shade etc. Trees make the land fertile, prevent land erosion, protect cyclone, supply us oxygen, consume carbon-dioxide. Trees cause rain, provide shelter for birds and ferocious animals, prevent air pollution etc. We take shelter on cradles just after our birth and dead body is carried with a wooden carrier to the graveyard. Wood is essential to make our houses, boats, launches, partex, newsprint, pencil, railway slippers, hardbcard, furniture and so on. We burn wood to make fire. We can earn foreign exchange by exporting wood. Without any forest the land will get no rainfall, consequently it will turn into desert. Environment will become poisonous and life will become challenging. Rainlessness will cause a bad harvest or no harvest. Without trees homes look barren, poor and naked. So we must not cut down trees cruelly. In fact, without trees our life will be on the verge of extinction. Rainy season is the best time for tree plantation. And in this season we can plant more trees around our home and lying areas.

22.A Street Accident (a) Why is a street accident terrible thing? (b) Did you see any street accident? (c) What kind of accident was it? (d) How many people were injured or dead? (e) What did you do far them? Any accident is terrible and fearful. It can kill several persons at a time. Besides, many passengers get injured in the accident. They can be disabled all through their life which is intolerably painful because they are burden for a family as well as a-society. Thus an accident in a single moment can make a person subject to the mercy of others. I saw a terrible street accident last month. It was a bus accident. A Dhaka-bound bus was.running at a high speed. When the bus turned a corner, a truck running from the opposite direction crashed into it. The engine and the body of the bus were fully damaged. The two drivers and five passengers faced spot death. At least 15 were severely injured. However, I hired a few scooters and took the wounded to a nearby Health Complex. It was really a tragic street accident. Whenever I have a journey by bus, it flashes on my mind and a fear occupies me.

23. PHYSICAL EXERCISE What is physical exercise? - Why is it essential? - What may happen if one does not take regular physical exercise? Physical exercise means the regular movement of the limbs of our body according to rules. It is essential to keep our body fit and mind sound. There lies a close connection between body and mind. We can not think of a sound mind without a sound health. It is physical exercise which enables us to build a good health. Physical exercise makes our body active and the muscles strong. It also improves our power of digestion and blood circulation. It gives strength to our brain. A machine gets rust for want of proper use. Human body is also a machine. It becomes inactive and weak for want of exercise. So we should take regular physical exercise in order to maintain a sound health and lead a happy life.

24. Load Shedding

Load Shedding Load shedding means the discontinuity of supply of electricity for short or long time. Nowadays it has become a part of our daily life. There are many reasons for load shedding. The insufficient production of electricity is the main reason of it. Misuse and illegal connection of electricity are the other reasons of it. It occurs mostly at night because the demand of electricity is more than in the daytime. The bad effects of load shedding are beyond description. It creates problem in the socio-economic development of the country. Mills and factories, shops, hospitals etc. become paralyzed due to load shedding. The sufferings of the students know no bounds. They sit in the darkness closing their books during the load shedding. They suffer a lot of if it occurs in the time of their examination. The patients also suffer terribly because operation stops in hospitals for load shedding. Load shedding at night also encourages the thieves. However, this problem should be solved at any cost. The concerned authority must take necessary steps to stop it. More power stations should be established. Illegal connection and system loss should also be stopped. After all, there is no alternative to be conscious about the misuse of electricity.

25. TRAFFIC JAM A long line of vehicles which stuck in jam is called Traffic Jam. Traffic Jam is a common affair in the big cities and towns. It is a great problem in our country. There are many causes of it. The main causes of this problem is the narrowness of roads and the large number of vehicles. Our vehicles have increased but our roads have not increased. The unlicensed vehicles are increasing day by day. The drivers have little knowledge about traffic rules. The number of traffic police is insufficient. Parking here and there and overtaking tendency are also causes of it. It brings a great suffering to us. It kills our valuable time. We can not reach school ,college, office and hospital in time. However, the problem should be solved. The number of roads should be increased. Sufficient traffic police should be posted on important points. Traffic rules should be imposed. Unlicensed vehicles should be removed. Drivers should be conscious about traffic rules and regulations.
