The idea behind this Centenary Exhibition

was conceived at one of Don Best’s Barwell

lunches in 2011. Elspeth Grant, a historian

whose great grandfather Lewis Grant arrived

in SA in 1914 on the Orsova, suggested we

honour the many farm apprentices who came

to SA from 1913-1928, with an Exhibition at

the Migration Museum.

Delighted by the suggestion a Committee was

formed, made up of the sons and daughters

of Farm apprentices, who set to work with

enthusiasm. The date was set for June 2013 and

the purpose was to honour the contribution

made to South Australia by these young boys,

some only fourteen years of age. Many stories,

both positive and negative, emerged in the

course of our research and many new descendants

were discovered. The boys faced many challenges

– heat, drought, homesickness, isolation and

occasionally less than friendly farmers. However

many seemed to develop the strength and spirit

to survive whatever the new life threw at them –

boys, we salute you all.

THE BARWELL BOYSCentenary of S.A.'s British Farm Apprentices

The exhibition was held at the South Australian

Migration Museum, Adelaide and ran from June

2013 to August 2013.

It was opened 15 June by The Hon. G.E. Gago,

Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries,

Mr James Bruce, AM, JP, Honorary British Consul

and Dr Uncle Lewis O’Brien, Kaurna Elder and

son of a Barwell boy.

Minister Gago expressed delight in attending

the opening event and acknowledged the

contribution the boys made. She spoke of South

Australia prospering because of the daring and

determination of these young pioneers and

their decision to travel to the other side of the

world, to try something new, to learn, and to

contribute to our ongoing great agricultural and

primary industries and the profound effect it has

had on this state.

The exhibition was also on display at the Royal

Adelaide Show and several country shows in

areas where the boys worked.

Early in the 20th century thousands of migrants

came to Australia to seek a healthy and

prosperous new life. Most of them were from

the United Kingdom, in line with Australia’s

“White Australia” policy of the time.

In 1913 the South Australian Government started

a youth migration scheme to help meet the

state’s demand for agricultural labourers. British

boys aged 14 and over were invited to become

apprentices on SA’s farms:

‘The great questions for boys to ask themselves

are:

. What is my future in my present job, and

. What shall I be doing and how much shall I be

earning when I am 45 or 50?

If the answer is quite satisfactory and certain,

they can well stop here.

If, however, they prefer outdoor life with plenty

of good food and splendid prospects, they should

consider the question of going out to Australia,

where these things await all willing workers.’

Thomas Sedgwick, scheme founder, Britain, 1913

After the First World War (1914 –18), the Premier

of South Australia, Henry Barwell, visited Britain

and re-launched the scheme. The boys who

subsequently migrated over the next three years

became known as the “Barwell Boys”.

‘The ideal aimed at is the replacement of the

6,000 South Australian soldiers who were killed

in the war … “The scheme, in a word,” says Mr

Barwell “is an instalment of practical Imperial

reciprocity”.'

London Times, 4 March 1922

After a brief break, the scheme resumed for

a third and final time in 1927. This time it

borrowed an idea from the “Big Brother” youth

migration scheme operating interstate. Boys

were paired up with a mentor and consequently

were known as the “Little Brothers”.

In total over 1,750 British boys migrated here as

farm apprentices from 1913 to 1929. The schemes

ceased for good with the start of the Great

Depression.

The first group of 81 boys departed London

on the SS Beltana on 15 May 1913. The

journey to South Australia took about six

weeks. Each group was usually supervised

by just one man.

‘When we left Tilbury of course we were all

strangers to each other and you had to make

some friendships. We formed teams and we had

boxing and things like that... It was just rough

stuff but clean. We had quite a lot of fun.’

Jack Drew, SS Balranald, 1923

‘During the trip out we asked the cook why we

didn’t receive as good food as the passengers up

in the saloon. He said “Well, they’re passengers.”

“Then what are we?” we asked.

“You’re only bloody cargo!”

Alf Dyer, SS Ballarat, 1922

‘A lecture this evening for the young emigrants

– they were told to develop reliability and forget

about town life, pictures and cinemas. 80% of

failures in Australia were young men who left

the country and drifted back to towns.’

Diary of John Scholefield, boys’ ‘welfare officer’,

SS Balranald, 1924

While for many passengers the journey was the

adventure of a lifetime, at the other extreme,

one farm apprentice committed suicide en route:

‘On his way to South Australia a Barwell boy

went overboard ... under circumstances which

pointed to suicide... [The boy] lost his father two

weeks before he embarked, and was grieving

greatly. A watch was kept on him on the ship, as

he stated that he wished he were dead.’

The boys stayed at buildings in and around

Kintore Avenue, Adelaide, on arrival.

Farmers were invited to come and select

their own apprentices but for many the

trip was too long and expensive, so most

employers left the decision to the authorities.

Within 48 hours the boys started another long

journey by road, rail and/or sea to their final

destinations, as far as Penong in the west, Leigh

Creek in the north, through to Port MacDonnell

in the south-east.

‘We sent for you to come out and help us to

develop the country. We desire you to go on the

land and eventually to become producers. If you

possess the good old British characteristics of

pluck and determination, you are sure to make

good. You lads are the type Australia wants. You

will be treated like sons. Good luck!’

Immigration Officers Edgar Field and Victor

Ryan encouraged the apprentices to write

to them about their progress. Ryan had

more than 1,000 boys in his care at one

time, yet still wrote personal responses to

each boy. This earned him the nickname

“Daddy Ryan”.

‘I wish to thank you [Immigration Officer Ryan]

for your little advice “if at first you don’t

succeed, try, try again”. I have been very hard

tried … I have never done farm work before

and because of that I am getting hustled and

shouted at all over the farm.’

William Bourne, apprenticed at Streaky Bay

‘[Haydon] did not want it thought he was using

“soft soap” in anything he had to say, but his

unshaken conviction was that ... the finest move

he ever made was when he determined as a

youth, barely 19 years of age, to try his fortunes

under the boy migrant scheme.’

‘A boy migrant: An example of success’, The Chronicle,

1 August 1929, about William Haydon,

apprenticed at Cherryville

‘My life has been a misery to me since I have

been here. Several times [the farmer] has

threatened to murder me I think he must be

mad or out of his mind, no patience and no

encouragement whatever so I kindly ask you to

take me away.’

Arthur Floate, apprenticed at Booleroo Centre

‘Well Sir I have been out here a little over two

years and I think it is a wonderfull [sic] country

that is as far as farming goes. It is wonderfull

[sic] the great machines that are used in wheat

farming, such implements as Reapers, Threshers,

Binders, Stump Jump Ploughs, Combine Drill

and Cultivators, most of which I believe are

Australian inventions. Australia from what I can

see in the papers recently produces the finest

flour in the world, which says some-thing for

the man on the land.’

James Clark, apprenticed at Booleroo Centre

‘I have arrived at my destination and have

found [the host family] very nice people. They

are eager to do all in their power to make me

feel at home ... I must say that, as a class, the

Australians are more hospitable than the English

are at home ... there is only myself to blame if I

do not get on as I should.’

Geoffrey Ross, apprenticed at Orroroo

‘Well I am very glad I came to Australia for I

have got a better chance to get on in the World

than in London. I am going to nominate all

my brothers out here if possible and I have

informed a good many of my chums in London

to immigrate out here. I hope all the other chaps

who came out here with me have fared as well

as I. I think farming the healthiest life there is.

Once again thanking the Government for what

they have done for me.’

Frederick Ward, apprenticed at Purnong

Hugh Lawson, with a fellow apprentice, at Hindmarsh Island

‘Australia is not the country which we were told

it was when we were in England and I think it is

very wrong of the Government to bring us lads

… to a country where there is no need for us …

The farmers here … also think that they (the

Govt) must be mad.’

Harry Robertson, apprenticed at Clinton Centre

‘[Premier Gunn] said emphatically that the

scheme could not be described as the success

which some of its sponsors would have the

public believe ... Records showed that … three

of them met their death by committing suicide.’

‘Barwell Boys scheme “morally wrong” says the Premier:

Reasons for discontinuance’, The Advertiser, 10 May 1924

‘The lad appears to have been very ungrateful

and unfair in leaving you at the commencement

of harvest, when he could have been of great

assistance to you.’

Immigration Officer Field writing to a farmer at Penola

‘It is with regret that I have to report this boy

cleared out during last night. I had no suspicion

that he contemplated any such action – nor have

I any idea what caused it.’

Farmer writing about boy apprenticed at Wynarka

‘[Kelly was] done to death, it is alleged, by … a

Barwell Boy … [who] was arrested at Lyndhurst

on Sunday, on a charge of inflicting grievous

bodily harm. After Kelly’s death he was re-

arrested on a charge of wilful murder.’

Eye knocked out with a dog spike’,

‘I get up before sunrise and get the horse out of

the paddock and feed him. Then I put the horse

in the sledge and carry two tubs of water up to

the end of the block … I fill the boiler, light the

fire underneath and get it boiling by 7. After

that I chop enough wood to last for the day. I

then go to breakfast. At half past seven … I

help to load the dip and then go on picking …

100 buckets a day, which is about a ton of fresh

fruit. At 5.10 after [the other pickers] have gone

I have to cut lucerne for three horses … stack

the peaches, box 2 or 3 cwt [150 kg] of currants,

get in … wood for morning and do diverse odd

jobs. By this time it is dark and when I have had

tea and a bath it is bedtime.’

Did the boys become farm owners

as intended?

Many completed their apprenticeships

and tried to stay on the land. This proved

hard to do, especially during the Great

Depression.

Others moved to towns and cities; some

returned to England. Many joined the

Australian defence forces during the First

and Second World Wars.

The boys were now men.

Thomas Simpson, SS Benalla 1924, apprenticed

at Jabuk - MISSIONARY

Reverend Simpson served as a Methodist

missionary in New Guinea. With Japanese

invasion imminent in 1941, his daughter and wife

Nellie were evacuated. Simpson stayed; his fate

is unknown. Nellie gave birth to their only son

after leaving New Guinea.

Jack Dease, SS Barrabool, 1923, apprenticed

at Clare - ACTOR & BROADCASTER

Dease moved to New South Wales, where he

became a popular announcer on radio station

2GB. He is best known as host of The Quiz Kids,

broadcast nationally from 1942 to 1968.

Joe Rich, SS Benalla, 1923, apprenticed at Lochiel

- MAYOR

Rich returned to England during the Great

Depression and became Mayor of the Borough of

Wenlock in Shropshire. However, Rich was buried

at his beloved Lochiel in 1974, as his daughter

married a South Australian and her father passed

away while visiting here.

Ernest Dear, SS Balranald, 1923, apprenticed at

Elbow Hill - AGRICULTURAL LABOURER

Dear was released from his apprenticeship

early on the basis that he could “do better

for himself”. He remained fully employed as

an itinerant worker throughout the Great

Depression and was known as a champion axe-

man. Dear then worked at a Whyalla munitions

factory during the Second World War.

In 2009 Culburra became the first South

Australian community to erect a memorial in

honour of a British farm apprentice.

Joseph Smith was one of the first “Barwell Boys”

to arrive in South Australia (SS Largs Bay, 1922).

He completed his apprenticeship and lived at

Tintinara before settling at nearby Culburra.

The community restored a plough that Joe

Smith used in the 1930s. This five-furrow light

stump jump paring plough was manufactured

by SA company Shearers, circa 1910. Originally it

was pulled by six horses but Joe operated it with

a tractor.

The memorial is located on the Dukes Highway

(eastern side of Culburra, opposite a paddock

that Joe once ploughed).

Alec Best (SS Balranald, 1922) and Reg

Potter (SS Jervis Bay, 1928) organised the

first Barwell Boys and Little Brothers annual

reunion in 1975.

The last known farm apprentice, Harold Marlow

(SS Moreton Bay, 1924) passed away in 2008,

aged 101. In recent years the annual reunions

have been attended by the apprentices’ families

and friends. We have mounted this exhibition to

mark the centenary of the first boys’ arrival.

John Ratcliff, former board member, South

Australian Farmers Federation - Son of Ernest

Ratcliff, SS Ballarat, 1923

My father was sent here to “cure” him of

his farming ambitions but he never returned

to England. In 1947 he settled in the South

East; our family still owns the originally

developed farm. The “Barwell attitude”

enabled my father to fulfill his ambitions.

Today his grandsons, having gained agriculture

degrees at university, are moving forward

with scientific ideas and new visions.

Thousands of Australians can trace their

ancestors back to the British farm apprentices.

The fields of endeavor pursued by them are

diverse and some did indeed continue the

farming tradition.

The courage of those young pioneers

who migrated to South Australia made

it possible.

These descendants reflect on their Barwell

Boy forebears.

Dr Uncle Lewis Yerloburka O’Brien, Kaurna elder

- Son of Ernest O’Brien, SS Balranald, 1923

I believe my father was born in 1907 and came

out at age 16. My mother, Gladys Simpson,

married him in 1928 and I was born in 1930. He

left for England again in 1935. I never knew my

father, he left my mum when I was quite young.

For further information see Uncle Lewis’s

autobiography And the Clock Struck Thirteen (2007).

Bernie Vince, Adelaide Crows footballer

- Great-grandson of Bernard Vince,

SS Ballarat, 1923

I am very proud of papa “Pom” for working

hard to provide for our family and the success

we have today. I’m also proud to be named after

him. One of my papa’s first jobs was to clear

some scrub near Stansbury – a tough gig when

your machinery was just a horse and cart.

Visitors Book Comments

“A piece of history I didn’t know about.” - Pamela Fitzgerald

“I only recently discovered Dad’s involvement with this, he spoke to no-one of his experience.

Sounds a tough time from the letters of his I have read.” - Dianne Morran

“So wonderful to see my great Uncle’s involvement.” - Sharon Munn

“One of the most honest accounts of Australian history I have seen in the museum.

Thank you.” - David Clarke

“Long trip from Brisbane to see the exhibition was worth the effort when I found the photo

of my dad with Alec Best.” - Jean Miller

“Interesting to read and hear the human stories.

Too much to take in during one visit.” - Jacki & Russell Bellinger from QLD

“Interesting to learn more about what my Grandpa went through in his migration to Australia.”

- Damian Cranwell

“It’s great to know that many different types of people have been responsible for making

our State great, including these boys.” - Jane Russo

“A lovely 100 year commemoration to the Barwell Boys including my Poppa Tom Walker. A great

exhibition to mark a very important, significant contribution these boys made to S.A.”

- Kate & Chris Anderson

“We were so pleased to find out the history, thank you.” - Koslowski Family

“What a marvellous display, boy wasn’t living different then.” - Rosemary Shipway

Some live their lives in cities fair

In realms of pomp and wonder

But here’s the truth of those who dare

To win their way Down Under:

Though times were tough and often faced with failure

They won their way, and helped to shape Australia

- Arch Grosvenor, 1983
