THE NEWGAS,CHROM

SUPPORT

Q stands for GAS-CHROM Q, the new support for you - particularly ifyou are using gas chromatography for analysis of steroids, alkaloids, bile acids, pesticides, etc, GAS-CHROM Q is DMCS-freafed specifically for such applications. NEED PROOF? Consider the difficult separation of cholesterol fromcholestanol on a low-loaded OF-l column, which is a good test of a support. Itrequires high efficiency and negligible tailing. Dehydration of cholesterol canoccur if the support is not made just right. Q is made just right as shown infigure 1. Results for the same test mix on similar OF-l columns made withother commercially available silane-treated supports are shown in figures 2and 3. Note any difference? The test mix contains cholestane as a reference.A good thing, too. Wonder where the -erol and -anal went in figures 2 and 3?look at the baseline after the cholestane peak.

PREPARATIVE SEPARATIONS WITH THE AUTO PREP 705

Model 705 gas chromatograph was developed to fillsome spec ific areas of preparat ive gaschromatographynot entirely answered by the popular model 700.

705 uses [ow cost nitrogen as a carrier gas insteadof expensive helium. It also allows the collection ofsmall quantities of components, normally not detectedby a thermal conductivity cell.

The specially developed splitter ensures linear splitting of even high molecular weight samples, A stableelectrometer and excellent temperature controls, to-

gether with the use of the proven 700 components, completes this outstanding new Aerograph.

Model 705 does not replace the Model 700 but isits useful companion. Like the 700, it can be usedpreparatively or analytically.

Phosphorous-containing compounds are one of the mostrecent groups to yield to a Packard Gas Chromatograph. The chromatogram which is shown above was made ona Packard Model 7611 dual system (dual column oven, dual detectors, dual electronics and dual recorders) andrepresents an important achievement in simultaneousdetermination of compounds of widely separated con-centration.

A modified flame ionization detector with a sodiumemission grid and termed a SODIUM THERMIONICDETECTOR (STD) bas beenfound to be nearly 1000 timesmore sensitive to phosphorous-containing pesticides thanthe standard flame ionizationdetector (FID). The samplewas separated on a single col-umn and passed through a 1:1ratio stream splitter beforesimultaneous detection in thenormally sensitive FID and thehighly sensitive STD. In thismanner, all the organic materials were detected in theFID (upper curve) while the trace amount of phospho-rous compounds was readily detected in the STD unit(lower curve).

Packard Gas Chromatographs offer many significantadvantages to research workers in the biochemical andbiomedical disciplines. Fast, stable, highly sensitivedetermination, versatility and convenience of operationare some of the reasons why you should know moreabout these superb instruments..
