Babcock Early Careers Team

The demand for people with engineering skills in the UK is rising, and it is nationally recognised that the UK currently has a substantial shortfall.

Due to this, Babcock Nuclear and Marine Sector have a dedicated early careers team whose aim is to open the doors to meaningful encounters with young people through a variety of STEM based activities, apprenticeship programmes, graduate placements and work experience opportunities.

This includes our Annual Devonport Future Engineers Work Experience Programme which we hold on site for 35 students, our STEM Ambassador Network and Schools liaison activities.

Devonport Royal Dockyard works on some of the most exciting and prestigious marine projects in the world. We are the largest naval base in Western Europe, with 650 acres, 15 dry docks and four miles of waterfront. We currently employ thousands of people on site, of which 550 employees fall under Early Careers at Devonport with close to over 300 new employees joining every year from apprenticeships to graduates. Each year we are increasing our apprenticeship and graduate Programme to meet the increasing demands of the business.

This is why engaging with schools, colleges and universities is vital to the continued flow of talent which is essential to enable us to meet our future resource demands.

This is where our dedicated Early Careers team steps in…

Cornerstone Employer

In 2019 we were the first Employer in the South West of England to sign up as a Cornerstone Employer for the Careers and Enterprise Company South West of England Hub.

As a Cornerstone Employer we work with our regional teams, business contacts and the wider business community which allows us to ensure all young people in our local cluster of secondary schools and colleges have the opportunity to prepare for and feel inspired by the world of work.

In this role we work with employers located within the heart of the South West to help schools and colleges meet Government Gatsby Benchmarks.

The role of the Cornerstone Employer is to set the strategic direction on how employers can support schools with raising the awareness of employability and skills for their students.

STEM at Devonport Dockyard

In the following section you’ll be able to find out about the STEM events and activities we offer and how your school can get involved.

STEM activities we can support…

STEM FairsBabcock Devonport loves to attend STEM specific events.

We like to keep our stand as interactive as possible, for example, we have a Lego submarine activity which demonstrates buoyancy, this is a fun activity for all age groups.

We also introduce our Crumble Rovers for exciting coding and our HMS Portland motor removal activity which was made on site at Devonport and requires a paddling pool.

We aim to keep out stand as enjoyable as possible for the students enabling them to interact with us on another level whilst also being there to give career advice and how our activities are relatable to STEM specific job roles.

By demonstrating these sort of activities we aim to encourage the students to get involved, learn and see what happens.

School workshops:We offer a range of STEM related activities that we can deliver in the classroom. We tailor our activities to support the student’s requirements whilst keeping it enjoyable with fun giveaways or prizes. These activities vary for different key stages which means we will always have an activity suitable for your students to support your curriculum requirements. These activities will relate to what we do here at Devonport dockyard.

Mock Interviews

We have supported mock interviews for a number of years and we have many experienced interviewers. What we do is flexible and fits around your needs. For our full interview package we would run a ‘what employers

look for’ first, followed by a half hour where the students research the dockyard and followed by the interview. This would need to be booked well in advance so that we can get the appropriate amount of volunteers.

If you have a bespoke request for a STEM activity or require our support at an event, please let us know. Where possible we’ll do what we can to support our local schools and provide what we can to make your STEM event a success.

Site ToursWe also offer schools the opportunity to visit Devonport Dockyard. Depending on the age of the group this may consist of a tour around the Frigate Support Centre where you will meet our skilled engineers at work, followed by a tour of the Factory. Booking for this will need to be well in advance and will depend on security and staff availability.

What does the school need to do?Babcock STEM is keen to interact with your school. Please make a request to our STEM inbox - [email protected]

We require a minimum of 5 to 6 week’s notice in order to make sure that we can effectively organise activities.

Devonport Work Experience Opportunities

Every year Babcock host a range of work experience placements available to students in years 10 to 13.This is to allow them to gain an insight working in a real life environment for a week.

Our aim:

› To promote the importance of a career.

› Help students make informed career decisions by assessing their interests and exploring potential careers.

› To give students insights into the nature of diversity of employees in the workplace.

› Improve students’ maturity, confidence and self-reliance.

› Provide schools with an initiative to forge stronger links between education and industry.

› Educate students on non-gender stereotyped occupations.

› Prepare students for the demands and expectations of the working world.

We have two work experience programmes:

Future Engineers ProgrammeThe Future Engineers Programme offers 35 year 10 students the opportunity to undertake a Design, Make and Test project alongside skilled engineers to reach their full potential. Each student is be given the opportunity to develop leadership, problem solving and presentations skills as well as exploring the site via organised tours on Warships and Submarines.

Corporate Services ProgrammeThe Corporate Services Programme provides students in year 10, 11, 12 and 13 the opportunity to work alongside colleagues in Finance, Commercial and Supply Chain. Students are required to select which area they would like to gain experience upon application.

Finance/Accountancy: With annual revenue of over £5.2bn in 2019, it’s fair to say our finances need just as much expertise as our projects. During the week students have the opportunity to explore what it takes to work in a finance team whist developing their analytical, mathematical and communicational skills.

Commercial: From the latest submarines and supercarriers to the UK’s first new nuclear power plant in over 20 years, we’ve secured some of the most extraordinary engineering projects. On this exciting programme students continue that trend as they could be providing commercial support to elements of multi-million pound bids or existing contracts, or working with our business development teams to identify new opportunities within Babcock.

Supply Chain: Do students know how many parts go into a submarine? Whether designing, building, operating, managing or maintaining vital assets, one thing is certain – supply chain management lies at the heart of our operations and plays a pivotal role in our business success.

How students applyWe launch our work experience application process in October every year. Students will be required to complete a standard application form followed with a supporting statement outlining why they choose Babcock for their work experience placement.

Our Apprenticeships

Our long established apprenticeship programme offers students a wealth of opportunities to develop their career in a supportive environment.

Throughout the apprenticeship there is support from our dedicated Apprenticeship Development Managers and Mentors. There are also opportunities to train as an Apprentice Ambassador, STEM Ambassador or STEM Mentor.

Each engineering apprentice is invited to our residential week on Dartmoor. The higher level and Business Administration apprentices are tasked with supporting community projects throughout the week.
