PRESIDENTS’ ADDRESS

In an increasingly competitive job market, a tertiary education is more than just lectures and exams. Students will inevitably devote a great deal of time to identifying future employment prospects through avenues made available to them at university.

In 2020, the Financial Management Association of Australia (FMAA) celebrates its 30th birthday. That is, 30 years of being committed to guiding our student members towards making an efficienttransition from university to the workforce, and 30 years of introducing motivated students to prospective employers. More recently, however, the FMAA has been much more than just a means of introduction. Today, we invite students to ask questions, develop their networking skills, cultivate an understanding for life in finance, professionalservices, asset management and consulting through case competitions, and give them access to some of the country’s, and the world’s, most efficientbusiness institutions.

Since our inception in Melbourne in 1990, the FMAA has become the largest professionally focused student organisation in Australia, encompassing the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Queensland and Monash University. With more than 5,500 members nationally, the FMAA strives to provide its members with a distinct advantage in today’s highly competitive job market.

As an FMAA member, you will be invited to an array of exclusive networking opportunities where you can forge relationshipswith both firm representativesand like-minded students. Your involvement with the FMAA will distinguish you from other candidates and serve as a solid foundation to build upon as you enter the workforce. As such, FMAA membership is an invaluable asset for students who are eager to find out about themyriad of opportunities in theAustralian business community. We strive not only to help students, but also assist our Sponsors in finding the best talent and the best fit for theirorganisation. We encourage you to become an active FMAA member and take full advantage of the many resources provided to you.

On behalf of the FMAA, we would like to thank our Gold and Founding Sponsor, Macquarie Group,

for their extensive support and assistance over the last 30 years. In addition, we also extend our sincere thanks to the 40+ FMAA’s National and State Sponsors for their continued support. We also thank our Board of Directors, and the Faculties and Business Schools which accommodate the FMAA at the Universities of Melbourne, Monash, Sydney, New South Wales and Queensland. BOARD’S ADDRESSThe FMAA is more than just a “student club” – it is the mostinfluentialandimpactfuleliteCommercestudentorganisation in Australia.

From humble beginnings 30 years ago, the FMAA has notched up:• Approximately 100,000 members; • Close to 1000 sponsor sign ups and re-signs;• Total revenue over the 30 years of around $4

million–andasanotforprofit,allnetincomeisretained and invested back into the organisation furthering its objectives;

• Thousands of events and functions;

• Thousands of graduate jobs and careers secured via the Club; and

• An informal alumni network second to none in Australia.

This incredible track record of success has only been achieved because of:• The passion and dedication of the student

committees each year;• Our loyal corporate sponsors; and • The finance academics who have supported the

club and without whose support, we would not be where we are today.

The FMAA would be a unique business school case study – our student leadership team changes every year, bringing new energy and ideas. Old ways of doing things are quickly challenged and everything is questioned repeatedly. Yet amongst that constant reinvigoration, the Club has stayed true to its core values for the entire 30 years.

That is part due to our National Board. I’d like to acknowledge and thank all past and present Board Members and in particular acknowledge my Co-Chair, Peter Yates and Board Member Professor Kevin Davis, who have been on the Board since its establishment.

I’d also like to make special mention of

Macquarie Bank who has been the Gold Sponsor of the FMAA since its inception in 1990.

One common theme that Peter, Kevin and myself remark on year after year, is just how impressive the FMAA student committee members are. It is very humbling for us to attend our board meetingsandevents.Itfillsuswithgreathopefor the future of Australian business.

30 is an extraordinary milestone in the journey of a “student club”. We should absolutely take pause to acknowledge and celebrate it. Happy 30th birthday!

WRITING A RESUME

Trynot touse thesameresume forevery job thatyouapply for.Tailor it foreachdifferentpositionandcompany. Doing this will help you stand out for all the right reasons. Your resume is where you show that you havetherequiredskills, knowledgeandqualificationsthatareneededfortheposition.

Page 1 of your resume should reflect themost relevant information pertaining to the job. As you headtowards completion of your degree, details of your education and industry related experience will be of most interest to the potential employer.

List your education in reverse chronological order. If you received any outstanding marks, be sure toinclude these. If not, there is no need to list them as companies often request a copy of your academictranscript which will contain this information. If you did well in a particular subject and are applying for a related role, then make sure the potential employer is aware of your mark.

Be sure to list your work experience and employment history in reverse chronological order. For each position, describe your duties and any achievements by beginning each point with an action verb (e.g. formulated, identified, solved, andaccomplished, managed, assistedetc).Remembertokeeptothepointandstresswhatyou have achieved. Any industry related work experience you have could have a separate heading.

Employers also value evidence of skills that you have developed. These could include the following and should be addressed in the ‘Skills summary’ section of your resume:

• Communication• Team work• Self management• Planning• Analytical abilities• Initiative• Flexibility

You should include evidence of how you possess and utilise some of these skills by using relevant examples. Merely listing skills with no evidence is meaningless for employers. Remember this is the section that shouldcontaintheskills thattheemployerhasspecifically identifiedasbeing importantandshouldbedifferentforeachapplication.

Another heading to include in your resume that may be relevant is ‘voluntary and community work’. Employers value people who are worldly and culturally aware and willing to contribute to the greatercommunity. Furthermore, if you are a member/student member of any professional associations, mention thisonyourresumeasitdemonstratesyourinterestandcommitmenttoyourchosenfield. You may or may not include a list of your ‘interests and hobbies’ – it’s a personal choice. Employers are usually interested in you as a person and this section could add another dimension.

Lastly, you will need to include a section with details of potential referees. List their name, position title, organisation and contact details. Referees should have witnessed your capabilities in a working environment.

It is acceptable to write ‘available upon request’ if you don’t have up to date details, but bear in mind you will need to provide the details if employers are serious about employing you. Always ensureyou speak to your referees before listing their contact details.

Quick tips:• Size 10, 11 or 12 font in Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman are good choices• Triple check the grammar and spelling• Be consistent with formatting – use clear headings and bullet points, ensuring they match up• Choose an easy- to- read layout and make sure there is plenty of ‘white space’ on the page• Be concise and use relevant examples• Write content in the third person – no ‘I’ or ‘we’

Yourresumeisthefirstimpressionthatyouwillgive to a potential employer. So make it clear, concise and relevant.

You should take the time to research the organisation and the position that you are applying for. This will enable you to link the skills and experiences from your time at university as a student, and any other employment, volunteer work, memberships and involvement in groups or bodies.

With its expansive network and powerful impact, the Financial Services Industry willprovide students with a highly rewarding career.

Investment BankingInvestment Banks exist to provide high quality advice to large multinational institutions, governmentsandindividualstomeettheirclients’financialgoals.Traditionally, investmentbanksdifferfromcommercialbanks in that they do not engage in retail deposits or lending services. However, some investment banks do interrelate with commercial banks to form a multi-industry company. Although investment banks deliver a diverserangeoffinancialproducts, someareasoffocusincludemergersandacquisitionsadvisory, capitalraising, sales and trading, investment management and investment research.

Mergers and AcquisitionsMergers and Acquisitions advisory is concerned with the provision of advice on transactions that may alter the ownership structure of a client’s organisation. Although the terms “mergers” and “acquisitions” are generallyreferencedtogether, theyaredifferentconcepts.Amergeroccurswhentwofirmscombinetocreateasingle, newfirm;andanacquisitioninvolvesoneentity(theacquirer)purchasinganotherentity(the target).

Providing such advice is only possible once certain processes are completed, such as valuation (generating a value for the target to ensure that the acquirer pays the optimum price for the company), due diligence (analysing the possibility of factors that may impact the acquisition and thus alter the target’s value) and third party negotiation with opposing advisors and lawyers.

Capital RaisingThe Capital Raising and Mergers and Acquisition advisory division work closely together as the acquisition of a company will require clients to raise additional capital to fund the transaction. Investment banks raise capital from two markets: the equity capital market (ECM) and the debt capital market (DCM). In the ECM, capitalcanbegeneratedviainitialpublicofferings, dividendreinvestmentsplansandrightsissues.Ontheother hand, DCM allows capital to be raised using methods such as bond issuance, notes and commercial paper.

Investment banks may also raise capital through a method called security underwriting. This involvesinvestment banks acting as an intermediary between the client and investors, by purchasing their client’s newly issued securities and selling it to prospective investors at a higher price. In consideration for accepting theriskthatthemarkettoinvestorsisunsuccessful, theinvestmentbankwillretaintheprofitsearnedfromthedifferenceinsalepriceandthecostpriceofthesecuritiespurchasedfromtheirclient.

Sales and TradingSales and Trading involves purchasing and selling securities such as shares, bonds, and currencies onbehalf of clients and the investment bank itself. The sales team is concerned with attracting customersand ensuring that the bank stays up to date with the constantly changing market. The trading team aims to buy and sell securities at the ideal price. Typical clients include institutional investors such as hedge funds, superannuation funds and other banks. Recent commentary, however, suggests that direct proprietary trading is losing its prominence in investment banks. The investment bank may also act as an agent, principal, brokerandmarketmakertocoordinatetransactionsbetweenprivateinvestors, institutionsandthefirm.

These objectives are achieved by investing in a range of assets such as hedge funds, real assets, fixedincomesecuritiesandequities.Thisdivisionmustbalancetheirclient’srisktolerancewiththeirinvestment objectives to devise a suitable asset mix. It’s one thing to hear about investment banking at networking events and through peers who have interned before, but it’s another thing entirely toexperience it. Iwaspleasantly surprised tofindmyself working on live transactions and, by the end of my internship, feeling as though I could actually contribute something useful to my team.

Q. What was your first impression? That everyone in my team was incredible smart, and that things move very quickly. At first, working insuch a high-performing environment can actually be quite intimidating. I found that once you accept that you really are the least experienced in the room, it becomes much easier to ask questions and soak up everything that you can.

Q. Was your internship in line with expectations?Probably not to be honest – I expected a lot of research tasks and that my work would largely be tokenistic. This wasn’t the case at all. Whilst I did have a lot of research based work, I was also given opportunities to do some basic modelling, help create slides that were used in pitches and meetings and produce pieces of work that my team would later use.

Q. What was the best piece of advice you received?Try before you question. No one expects you to know everything, but they do expect that you’ll try and work things out for yourself. Give yourself a certain amount of time to try and work out what to do (this will vary based on the type of task) before giving up and asking for further guidance.

Q. Do you have any advice for recruitment?Spend some time reading through recent transactions in the news. This can be challenging (which deal should you read, how do you know where to start?). Iwouldrecommendstartbychoosingone, thenfilterbackthrougholderarticlestofindwhenitwasfirstannounced. This gives a great insight into the whole process of a transaction. I also found that it is really useful to discuss transactions with friends.

FMAA CAREERS GUIDE 2020

A year in the life of a graduate at Macquarie

Kane’s story

I joined Macquarie’s Graduate Program after completing a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) majoring in Accounting and Finance. I’m a Business Analyst in the Principal Finance team, which is part of Macquarie’s Corporate and Asset Finance Group. Macquarie’s Principal Finance team provides flexible primary financing solutions and engages in secondary market investing, across the capital structure.

Day-to-day I am responsible for assessing potential debt and equity investment opportunities for Macquarie. These opportunities range from pure operating businesses to real-estate investments. A key part of my role is building analysis from the ground up and conducting research into a wide variety of industries to understand how businesses create value and the key risks they face in today’s market. This work can involve building financial models, analysing market trends, and working alongside the management teams who run these businesses.

As transactions near completion, I’ve been responsible for preparing commercial contracts and helping develop business strategies and 100-day plans. I’ve also been involved in negotiations with counterparties – which is always an interesting experience. These have all been fantastic learning opportunities, far exceeding the levels of exposure I expected as a graduate.

Principal Finance analysts are ‘sector agnostic’, meaning that we work across all sectors, from consumer retail to renewable energy to real-estate. I’ve been privileged to work across a plethora of sectors, and investigate opportunities internationally and across the capital structure from senior debt to pure equity, and everything in between. The small team structure means I receive constant on-the-job training and mentoring, which has been tremendously beneficial to my personal development.

I have been actively involved in the Graduate Development Program, where I’ve enjoyed engaging with my peers across different teams that I wouldn’t typically interact with during the normal course of business. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet many of my counterparts from the London, Singapore and North American offices.

As part of the Principal Finance team, I get to be part of equity investments. They’re intense and exhilarating experiences and are always exceptionally rewarding.

The work I’ve done with the Graduate Program has been exciting to say the least, but the pinnacle of my first year with Macquarie has been spending an extended period living and working in New York, which has culminated in my permanent transfer to New York in January 2019. I gained invaluable experience working on transactions and formed bonds with colleagues from around the world. I’ve always wanted to work in New York, so I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to realise my dream so early on in my career.

Looking for a challenge?

We will offer you...• A strong training program and support base• Opportunity to work alongside some of Australia’s leading and most experienced investment bankers• Exposure to a diversified and leading client base• Pathways to personal and career development • A fast-paced, interactive environment

Gresham Advisory Partners is looking to recruit interns for its Sydney and Melbourne M&A teams.

Why Gresham?Gresham has a strong track record of advising some of the largest and most complex transactions in Australian corporate history. Additionally, Gresham’s flat structure affords junior bankers the opportunity to directly access highly esteemed senior bankers on a day-to-day basis and the generalist model allows for direct exposure to companies across a range of sectors. Importantly, I was also impressed by the people at Gresham, who were very intelligent yet down-to-earth. Doing an internship reaffirmed all of this and more. I found everyone supportive and felt there was a genuine sense of team culture.

What do you enjoy most about your work?Over the last two years at Gresham I have had the opportunity to work on a series of buy-side transactions (including 4 which have completed). I have had exposure to top tier clients working with some of the biggest names in infrastruc-ture and private equity. I find myself regularly working on transactions in different industries including infrastructure, resources and industrials and am truly grateful for the diversity in the work which stems from Gresham’s generalist model. In my second month with Gresham I had the opportunity to work on First State Super’s $2.86bn acquisition of the Victorian State Land Titles from start to finish. The sheer size of the advisory team (16 advisors across three States) meant I had to be fully immersed in the transaction to stay across my responsibilities. This was a very excit-ing process and one that allowed me to gain a lot of experience and build my confidence early on in my career. More recently, I advised QIC on its $535m acquisition of listed remote energy company Pacific Energy. As my knowledge and experience deepens I have been assigned greater responsibility in the team, including running multiple transac-tion models in my second year, and as a result regularly working autonomously directly with the client. This keeps the work challenging and exciting and I can honestly say the knowledge and experience I have gained during my time at Gresham far exceeded my expectations.

Meet Ravina, 2018 Financial Markets & TreasuryGraduate

Degree Studied: Bachelor of Applied Finance and Commerce

What rotations did you experience as part of the program? During my program, I was able to undertake four rotations throughout the year across Treasury, Syndicate, Rates Trading and Strategy and Research. Within Treasury I spent time on the Global Funding desk, which is primarily responsible for carrying out a portion of Westpac Wholesale funding task.

In Financial Markets, the Syndicate team also supported this function as a service it provided to not just Westpac, but banks globally who wished to raise this money in the Australian market. I was thenabletomovetoRatesTrading, beforefinishingoffwitharotationacross theStrategydesk, whichinvolved producing research across all markets.

Why did you choose the Financial Markets & Treasury Program?I applied for the Financial Markets & Treasury Program because it’s constantly changing with domestic and global influences, a challenge that Ibelieve keeps the role exciting. Aside from this, it wasaprogramthatofferedagreatrangeofdifferenttypes opportunities all within the same program – sales, trading and research to name a few. If you love the challenge of servicing customers in a constantly changing environment and enjoy thinking creatively and independently, then you’ll love working in Financial Markets and Treasury. Throughout the year, I was given responsibilities across the teams and was encouraged to continuously put forward ideas on the market, for which I was given regular feedback. I’m so proud of everything I’ve achieved but, in particular, I loved participating in a live deal and taking on responsibilities to support client engagement.

And why did you elect to apply to such a Program at Westpac? One of the many things I love about Westpac is that they genuinely care about the development and progression of their graduates. Your leaders are constantly focused on your development goals and support your career ambitions. In particular, as agraduate, youareofferedtheflexibilitytoexploreareas that interest and are given a holistic experience with a variety of roles throughout the year.

ANONYMOUS INTERNSHIP REVIEW

Q. Overall how did you find the internship experience? My experience as a vacationer within a professional servicesfirmgavememyfirstrealexperiencewithina fully serviced and international business. After a day of training and some general networking with my team, I was given real client work – consolidating financialstatementsacrosssubsidiaryentitiesofanoverhead company in multiple currencies. Having the exposure to this type of work so early on was fantastic and I really valued the faith that the team put in me to do a good job. Furthermore, being able to work beside Directors and Partners as an intern and being able to network with them was a fantastic experience.

Q. Do you recommend doing an internship for penultimate year students? Why?I would absolutely recommend doing an internship for penultimate year students. Internships provide students with exposure to both working within a corporate and professional setting and working within a given industry that is relative to their degree. Theseareinvaluablewhengoingintoyourfinalyear–irrespective of whether or not the internship converts into a graduate opportunity or not. Having the opportunity to potentially secure a graduate position beforeyourfinalyearofuniversityisalsosomethingthat students would be foolish to not pursue. I believe that all penultimate year students should try to engage in internships purely for the exposure to work within industry and the potential of securing a graduatejobbeforeyourfinalyearofuniversity.

Q. Best piece of advice you received? To be proactive and ask as many questions as possible and to always think of the next step. I found that all members of my team were extremely approachable and willing to help with anything I was confused about. Despite it being cliché, I would implore future students to believe that there are no dumb questions. Better to ask when unsure and get in front of a problem than sit on it and not understand how to do something for an extended period of time! Always thinking of the next step when completing work will never go unnoticed by people in the team and those you are completing work for. Think of what you can do at the end of a job that may be required to be done anyway further down the line.

Q. Did your internship experience give you a clearer idea of the career path you wish to take? In what way?TheinternshipdefinitelyshedlightonthecareerpaththatIwanttotakeandclarifiedanswersonquestionsthatIhad.Despitethis, ithasn’tledtoanydefinitivepath that I will steer towards for the rest of my career, and that’s ok! Speaking to members of my team it became apparent that they too all still have questions on the career pathway that they are on and where it will inevitably lead them. Despite this, the passion that all members of the team had for their work and the collective goals of the team was inspiring and highlighted the fact that it is a team and a service line that I would love to work in post university.

ASSET MANAGEMENT

The asset management industry is responsible for managing funds for individuals and companies, where these funds invest in various asset classes. The primary role of these institutions centres around making well-informedinvestmentdecisionsonbehalfoftheirclientstogrowtheirfinances,diversifytheirportfoliosand mitigate investment risk. With the volume of investable assets continuing to rise and changing demographics shifting assetmanagement to centre-stage, opportunities in this field are presentmorethanever.Fromassetmanagers, tofinancialanalystsandeveneconomists, arangeofoccupationsareinvolved in undertaking the investment research, market analysis and management decisions that go into this service.

Mutual FundsMutual funds are managed portfolios of assets which are managed by a professional investment manager, and make up the bulk of the industry. Investors come from all aspects of life including from superannuation, retail investors, and institutions. Most of the time, mutual funds are long-only and employ more conventional investment strategies. These types of funds cover a variety of asset classes, from property trusts to internationalshares, andhavethebenefitofbeingdiversifiableandentailinglowtransactioncosts.

Hedge FundsHedge funds are fund that employ unconventional investment strategies to seek higher returns. Strategies include shorting stocks, risk arbitrage, and activist investing. As a result, hedge funds tend to be more risky, and investors tend to be institutional investors and high net worth individuals who are able to meet the cash threshold needed to invest in a hedge fund.

Private Equity FundsPrivate equity funds focus on managing private companies. Broadly speaking, private equity funds can be separated into leveraged buyout funds (LBO) and venture capital funds (VC). An LBO fund generally borrows large amounts of money to fund purchases of companies to take private. It looks to generate returns by improving performance and selling the company later at a higher price. VC funds invest in early stage companies looking for the next big idea.

ANONYMOUS INTERNSHIP REVIEW

Q. How would you rate your internship? My internship has been incredibly valuable to both my personal and professional development. The experiencehasbroadenedmyexposuretothefinanceindustry, specifically the buy-side and trading, andallowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge from university to practical applications and tasks. It has furtherencouragedmetopursueacareerinfinanceas the experience boosted my confidence andprovided clarity on a career in asset management. I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and I have made fantastic connections by fully immersing myself within the culture and into the work.

Q. Can you explain what tasks you were given? My tasks predominantly involved undertaking bottom up stock analysis through in-depth research and both qualitative and quantitative valuation techniques. This allowed me to further develop my financialmodelling skills and understanding of various sectors and stocks. I was required to remain up to date with company results and topical news during reporting season to analyse the effect the resultwould haveon the stock and recommend the most appropriate action for the fund to take. I also conducted ESG research, specificallyfocusedontheclimatechangeaction implemented by the portfolio’s top 15 active weight stocks and the portfolio’s top 10 most carbon intensive stocks, which was reported to clients accordingly. Additionally, I was involved in writing and compiling the portfolio’s monthly performance report which included a market outlook and information on the funds top 3 significant contributors andsignificantdetractors.

Q. What advice would you give people who are undergoing or will undergo internships? My advice for other students would be to fully immerse yourself in the experience and make the most of it. The employees in your team will most likely always be willing to help and answer any questions you may have, so don’t be afraid to speak up, however use common sense and pick the appropriate moments. It is important if you are working in a small team to show up with a positive attitude as you may be a refreshing change to the group which will be lookeduponfavourably.Thekeyistofindabalancebetween focusing on your allocated tasks to impress your team and spending your time getting to know theteamandfittinginwiththeculture.Togainthemost out of your experience ensure you are actively engaging in discussions and chatting to your team about their daily tasks, sectors, stock views and career experiences as this is the most valuable way to learn in an internship.

Q. What were your favourite parts of the internship? My favourite part of the internship was working with a small team of professionals who all had incredible career journeys and industry knowledge. I enjoyed simply chatting to my team members as they were very willing to share their experiences and teach me the methods they have adopted and adapted over years of work. I also enjoyed gaining exposure to portfolio management as I listened in on meetings which discussed the portfolio construction and analysed the various types of risks the funds were subject to.

CONSULTING SERVICES

The current business climate elicits the need for a fresh outlook on organisational management. Nonetheless, there is a common underlying process to every consultant’s work.
