Avid Unity MediaNetwork Support

This section lists the versions of Avid Unity MediaNetwork that are supported by this version. A workgroup environment means that you are using Avid Unity MediaNetwork along with Avid MediaManager.

This version supports the following versions of MediaNetwork:

• If you are not in a workgroup environment, you can use MediaNetwork v3.1 or higher.

• If you are in a workgroup environment, use MediaNetwork v3.3 or higher.

If you are an Avid Unity MediaNetwork customer, you cannot install this software until you upgrade to the correct version of MediaNetwork.

USB Port Application Key

The application key, commonly referred to as a dongle (see the following illustration), allows Symphony software to run on your computer. The USB port application key must be connected to a USB port on the computer. The earlier parallel port application key can still be used if you are upgrading to this release.

c Protect your application key from loss or theft. Your Avid software does not function without it, and acquiring a new key from Avid involves a fee.

For information on updating your application key, see “Updating Your Application Key” on page 14.

• Downloading Avid Codecs for QuickTime®

The Avid codecs for your Avid system are included on the installation CD-ROM as part of the standard installation. If you need a codec for a different platform (Windows or Macintosh®), download it from the Downloads tab of the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center. For more information, see the input and output guide or the Help.

• White Papers

You can access white papers by clicking the Documentation tab for your Avid product. White papers generally provide more in-depth information about features than is contained in the manuals or the Help.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Your Symphony system requires the following system configuration:

• Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 3

If you are updating your system to Service Pack 3 and you use the DV/MPEG option you may need to install a patch to Service Pack 3 to ensure that your Firewire devices operate correctly with the Avid editing application. The update program is located in the following folder:

drive:\Program Files\Avid\Utilities\SP3_Batch_File

If you used the Avid Recovery CD-ROM to update your system then the patch is already installed. If you need to run the updater, do so after you install the Avid application software because the installation software installs the updater in the Utilities folder.

• Minimum of 512 MB of built-in RAM but 1 GB is recommended. New systems ship with 1 GB of built-in RAM.

Built-in RAM refers to the physical random-access memory installed in your Windows system.

Updating Your Application Key

For information about installing the application key, see the setup guide.

The application key, commonly referred to as a dongle, allows the Avid software to run on your system.

c Protect your application key from loss or theft. Your Avid software does not function without it, and acquiring a new key from Avid involves a fee.

There are two different programs to update dongles:

• A dongle versioner is a software program created to update many Avid systems and is normally included in a software Maintenance Kit.

• A dongle updater is a software program created to update a specific Avid system.

To update your dongle for this version:

• If you are upgrading from Symphony v4.5, you do not need to update your dongle.

• If you received a dongle versioner CD-ROM with a Version Protection Kit or Maintenance Kit, you will need to use this CD-ROM to update the dongle before installing the new software.

• If you purchased this version as an upgrade, you have received a unique dongle updater disk that reflects a specific System ID. You will need to use this CD-ROM to update the dongle before installing the new software.

The CD-ROM includes instructions for running the dongle versioner or updater.

Installing the Software

15

Installing the Software

Installing Symphony software consists of the following general steps:

1. (Upgrades only) Remove any previous version of the application.

2. Install the application.

3. (Upgrades only) Update any drivers as necessary. See “Installation Check List for Upgrading an Existing System” on page 7.

n To install or remove the application software, you need to use a login account with administrative privileges.

Removing Previous Versions of the Application

When you insert the Avid installation CD-ROM into your system and instruct the installation software to install the new version of the application, the installation software will detect whether you have an existing version of the software on your system. The installation software will suggest that you remove it and you can follow the prompts. For more information on removing software, see “Reinstalling or Removing Application Software” on page 20.

Avid Projects, Avid Users, Settings, and AVX_Plug-Ins folders will not be deleted when you remove the Avid application.

c Some AVX™ plug-ins include files that might be deleted when you remove the Avid application. If a plug-in does not appear in the Effect Palette, reinstall the plug-in. For more information, see the AVX plug-ins section of the effects guide or the Help.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

16

Installing the Symphony Application

This section describes how to install the application software for your Avid system.

Windows 2000 Drive Partition Information

For Windows NT systems, Avid recommended that you install the application software, AVX plug-ins, and data files on a drive other than the C drive. This recommendation was based on the fact that C drives (also called partitions) were often relatively small (2 GB). On Windows 2000 systems, you can have a larger C drive or only one large C drive with no other partitions.

If your system disk has one large C drive, install all the software to the C drive. If your system disk has more than one partition with a C drive of 2 GB or less, install the software to the larger partition.

Installing Application Software

To install the application software:

1. Quit all Windows 2000 applications.

2. Insert the Avid Symphony CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

If the installer does not start automatically after you insert the application CD-ROM, do the following:

a. Double-click the My Computer icon.

b. Double-click the CD-ROM icon.

c. Double-click Launch.exe to start the installer.

3. In the Avid Technology window, click Installers.

4. Click Install Avid Symphony.

5. In the Welcome window, click Next and follow the system prompts to install the software.

c Do not install the Avid application or data files on a drive that will be used to store media.

Installing the Software

17

c If your system disk has more than one partition with a C drive of 2 GB or less, Avid recommends that you install the application, AVX plug-ins, and application data files on a drive or partition other than drive C.

6. When the installation is complete, a message asks if you want to restart the system.

t If you do not want to install any other Avid applications, click Yes.

The system restarts.

t If you want to install other Avid applications, click No.

The Avid Technology window reopens. See “Installing Additional Avid Applications” on page 21.

QuickTime Messages During the Installation Process

The installation program runs several installers, including a QuickTime installer. If the QuickTime installer determines that a newer version of QuickTime is already installed on your system, it displays the following message:

“A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. If you would like to continue, first uninstall QuickTime, then run the installer again.”

If the system displays the previous message, click OK.

The installer will leave the newer version of QuickTime intact and the Avid installation will continue.

QuickTime Version

Avid Symphony v4.8 runs on QuickTime 5 and QuickTime 6. The installer automatically installs QuickTime 5. If you want to use QuickTime 6, you can download the latest version of QuickTime from Apple’s Web site: www.apple.com/quicktime/download.

Windows 2000 Maintenance and Recovery

Before you begin using your Avid system, you need to set up user accounts and to create backup disks of system configuration files. This section describes setting up user accounts. The setup guide for your Avid system provides information on the following topics:

• Transferring disk drives from Windows NT Systems

• Creating an emergency repair floppy disk

• Setting the proper paging file

• Configuring and maintaining disks drives

c To facilitate proper Windows 2000 recovery or to rebuild the system if a failure occurs, you need to create backup disks as described in the setup guide for your Avid system.

Setting Up User Accounts

Your Avid system ships with the following two accounts enabled:

• Administrator

• AvidTechnology

n If you used the Avid Recovery CD-ROM to upgrade to the Windows 2000 Professional operating system, the default administrative account is “avid,” not “AvidTechnology.”

These accounts have administrative privileges and have no password assigned.

You can have multiple users editing on your Avid system, but all users must have administrative privileges. Without administrative privileges, certain functions such as gaining access to existing projects and digitizing might not work correctly. This is a limitation of the Windows 2000 operating system.

You can have multiple users editing on your Avid system, but all users must have administrative privileges. Without administrative privileges, certain functions such as gaining access to existing projects and digitizing might not work correctly. This is a limitation of the Windows 2000 operating system.

Bin and Project Name Limits

The limit for bin and project names is 27 characters, not including the period and 3-character extension that the system automatically adds to a file name (for example, the system automatically adds the characters .avb to the end of a bin name). For more information, see the Help.

Linking OHCI Drivers

This section applies to Symphony systems with the DV/MPEG option.

Symphony (with DV/MPEG option) does not use the default Microsoft® OHCI 1394 driver; instead, Avid uses a custom OHCI driver developed by Texas Instruments. When you first connect a camera or deck (DV device) to the system via OHCI 1394, if the Symphony application is running, it will install the custom Texas Instruments driver automatically.

When you plug in the DV device (such as a camera) and the application is not running, the Hardware Wizard will appear. Either use the Wizard to manually install the driver, or click Cancel and start the Symphony application. Symphony will recognize the DV device and will install the custom driver.

If you want to use the Microsoft driver with a third-party application, use the DVSelect utility to link the Microsoft driver.

Special Notes

33

To connect DV devices with a particular driver:

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Avid, point to Utilities, and then click DVSelect.

The DV Driver Select dialog box opens.

2. Select one of the following:

- Microsoft DV Camera and VCR Driver

- Avid/Texas Instruments 1394 DV Camcorder Driver

3. Select “Switch drivers for only those devices that are currently turned on.”

4. Connect and turn on any DV devices you want to link to the selected driver.

5. Click OK.

The selected driver is linked to the currently connected devices that are turned on.

If you do not select this option, the driver is linked to all devices you have ever connected to the system.

Goodies Folder

Avid supplies a Goodies folder located on the Avid Symphony CD-ROM. Access the Goodies folder by browsing the Avid Symphony CD-ROM. This folder contains programs and files that you might find useful when trying to perform functions beyond the scope of the Symphony software.

c Avid is not responsible for the support or sale of the products in the Goodies folder. They are provided as suggestions for users to decide if any of these products fit into their process. Avid is also not responsible for any loss of data or time related to the use of these products. For more information, see the ReadMe files in the Goodies folder.

Antivirus Applications

Antivirus programs containing auto-scanning features can interfere with the operation of the Avid application. For example, some antivirus programs can be configured to run in the background and scan all files for viruses whenever they are opened, copied, or moved. Since virus scanning is a processor- and disk-intensive activity, it can interfere with recording and playing real-time effects in the Avid application.

Avid recommends that you do not scan all files or schedule any background tasks such as virus scanning when you are using your Avid application.

File deletion protection utilities also consume system resources and could interfere with the proper operation of the Avid application. These utilities automatically back up any files that are deleted, even temporary files created and deleted by the Avid application. This consumes a large amount of disk space.

Special Notes

35

Partitioning Restrictions

The Windows 2000 system allows you to create multiple partitions on a single drive or striped partitions across multiple drives as a way to manage projects and files. However, Avid does not support extended partitioning.

n For information about drive partitioning, see the setup guide for your Avid system.

AVX Plug-ins and Memory

Multiple AVX plug-ins that you have applied to a sequence are now kept resident in memory at the same time. When you close a bin containing the sequence, the plug-ins are also closed, freeing the memory. If you find your Avid system running out of memory and you are using many plug-ins:

1. Choose Console from the Tools menu.

2. Type the command closeallavxplugins, and then press Enter.

This command closes all currently opened plug-ins. They will automatically open again when needed.

Transferring Media on Macintosh Drives

You can use an external drive formatted for Macintosh (HFS+ drive) to transfer audio and other compatible media from a Macintosh system to a Windows 2000 system if the receiving system is running the MacDrive™ 5 CrossStripe™ application.

MacDrive 5 CrossStripe from Mediafour Corporation™ is an application for Windows 2000 that lets you read disks formatted for Macintosh, including striped hierarchical file system (HFS+) volumes. By using MacDrive 5, you avoid the need to use PC-formatted disks to transfer files. MacDrive 5 includes support for all Avid file name extensions.

For information on MacDrive 5 CrossStripe, go to the MediaFour Corporation Web site: www.mediafour.com.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

36

n You cannot use MacDrive 5 to format an HFS+ volume from a Windows volume. The application does allow you to reformat an existing HFS+ volume.

To avoid problems when reading a connected HFS+ drive, do one of the following:

t On the Macintosh system, after transferring the media files to the HFS+ drive, give the media folder a name other than “OMFI MediaFiles.” You cannot change the name of the OMFI folder after you connect the drive to the Windows 2000 system.

t On the Windows 2000 system, after you have connected the drive and have transferred the media files to an NTFS drive, turn off the system, disconnect the drive, reboot, and then restart the Avid system.

Compression Utilities

When you move a project from an Avid editing application on a Macintosh system to an Avid editing application on a Windows 2000 system, you might want to compress the project folder.

You can use the software tools DropStuff™ and StuffIt Expander™. These products run on both Macintosh and Windows 2000 systems. Use DropStuff on the Macintosh system to compress the folder, and use StuffIt Expander on the Windows 2000 system to expand it.

To purchase and download versions of DropStuff or StuffIt Expander, go to the Aladdin Systems, Inc. Web site: www.aladdinsys.com.

c Do not use the Macintosh version of WinZip®.

Suggestions for Optimum Performance

Windows 2000 is a multitasking operating system. However, background tasks can interrupt time-critical operations, such as digitizing, playing, or rendering. Make sure that background tasks are not running while you are working in the Avid system.

Special Notes

37

The following list contains suggestions for ensuring optimum performance when working with the Avid system:

• Do not leave a Windows Explorer window open. Windows Explorer will try to update file information.

• Do not schedule automatic backups at times when your Avid system might be in use.

• It is important that you do not automatic perform Windows Update because it might prompt you to install software that is not compatible with this version of your Avid editing application. In particular, you should not update the Java Runtime software to a version higher than v1.3. Some of the Avid applications, such as MetaSync, do not work correctly with Java v1.4.

• Do not leave other applications open. Some applications, such as Microsoft Office, run background processes.

• Do not allow the Find Fast background process (find.exe) to run. The process will try to update its cache of file and folder locations. Check your Startup folder, and delete the file if it is there.

• Do not leave an e-mail application open if it is set to do periodic checks for mail.

• Do not run any application that includes prescheduled or automatically scheduled activities, such as a calendar program.

• Disable Power options as follows:

a. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

b. Double-click Power Options.

The Power Options dialog box opens.

c. In the Power Schemes tab, set “Turn off hard disks” to Never, and set “Turn off monitor” to Never.

d. If you have a System standby option, select Never.

e. Click OK to close the Power Options dialog box.

• Disable screen savers.

• Do not transfer network data during critical operations.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

38

• Do not insert a CD-ROM in a drive during time-critical operations. Most CD-ROM drives and software perform an autoscan or autostart operation. Do not keep media on the internal system drive.

• Always use small fonts to avoid missing characters in the application dialog boxes. To review font settings, check the Settings tab of the Display Control Panel.

• Do not use large graphics as wallpaper.

• Turn off all Visual effects in the Effects tab in the Display Properties dialog box.

Documentation Changes

This section contains additional information that was not available when the manuals were printed.

Location of Avid DV Codec for QuickTime

The input and output guide for your Avid system describes how to copy the Windows version of the Avid DV codec to another system. The correct path and file name for this codec is

drive:\WINNT\System32\AVIDQTAVdvCodec.qtx.

On Windows 2000 systems, copy the codec to the same location. On Windows XP systems, copy the codec to drive:\Windows\System32. This codec supports both DV 25 and DV 50 resolutions.

Marquee Text Import

The note concerning text import limitations in “Importing Text” in the chapter “Working with Text” in the Avid Marquee Title Tool User's Guide is no longer accurate. You can import both regular ASCII text files and text files in Unicode™ into the Marquee Title Tool. However, binary characters in text files not in Unicode remain unsupported, so you cannot directly import files with complex word processor formatting such as RTF files or Microsoft Word documents.

International Character Support

39

International Character Support

This document describes how to take advantage of international character support (ICS) on your Avid editing system.

ICS allows you to display and input characters in languages other than English. There are two basic methods for using ICS:

• Install the local language operating system, and work within the operating system.

• Use the standard English language operating system, install the language pack, and set the locale to your local language.

n Avid Unity MediaNetwork v3.2 or later also supports ICS. For more information, see the MediaNetwork documentation.

n For the latest version of this information, see the International Character Support page on the Knowledge Center. For more information, see “To access the files on the Knowledge Center” on page 45.

Using a Local Language Operating System

If you use a local language operating system, consider the following items:

• When you start the Avid editing application for the first time, it automatically creates a keyboard setting for that language. You can view the keyboard mapping by clicking the appropriate Keyboard setting in the Settings scroll list. If you are using a language other than English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish, you might need to adjust the mapping for the keyboard so the keys in the Keyboard palette match the keys on your physical keyboard. See “Using Foreign Keyboard Mapping” on page 41.

• If you are bringing older projects and bins forward to this version, you might need to use the CleanEncode utility to convert the file names so they can be viewed correctly in Windows Explorer and in the Avid editing application. See “Moving Older Projects to this Version on Windows” on page 42.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

40

Choosing a Locale on an English Language Operating System

When you use this method, you typically instruct your operating system to allow you to choose between English and a specific locale such as French, German, Chinese, or Japanese. This allows you to input and display characters in your chosen language even though you are using the basic English language operating system.

To take advantage of ICS on an English language operating system:

• Instruct your operating system to display the appropriate language in menus and dialog boxes and specify the language you want to use for keyboard layouts. Follow the instructions in the following section “Non-English Character Support” on page 40.

• If you are using a language other than English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish, you might need to adjust the mapping for the keyboard so the keys in the Keyboard palette match the keys on your physical keyboard.

Non-English Character Support

You can specify a non-English keyboard layout and text entry format for the language in which you want to type.

n The operating system does not need to be in the same language as that in which you are typing.

To specify a language in which to type:

1. (Option) Plug in a regional keyboard.

2. Click the Start button, and select Settings > Control Panel.

3. Double-click Regional Options.

The Regional Options dialog box opens.

c. Click “Set default.”

5. (Option) Select options in the other Regional Options dialog box tabs.

6. Click the Input Locales tab.

7. In the “Installed input locales” area, select an input language.

8. If the language you want is not in the list, click Add, and select an input locale and a keyboard layout for the language.

9. Click Set as Default.

10. Click Apply. If you need to install additional files, the Insert CD-ROM dialog box opens.

11. Click OK.

The Files Needed dialog box opens.

12. Follow the instructions, and then click OK.

13. To have your selected language appear on the taskbar, select “Enable indicator on taskbar.”

14. Click OK.

Using Foreign Keyboard Mapping

When you start the Avid editing application under a new locale, the application automatically creates a Keyboard setting for your language. You can view the keyboard layout by clicking the appropriate Keyboard setting in the Settings scroll list.

The default Avid keyboard layouts for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish languages map correctly to the characters on the physical keyboard. However, if you are using a different language, the display in the Keyboard palette might not match your physical keyboard layout. You can use the Foreign Keyboard Mapping button in the Keyboard palette to display the correct character in the Keyboard palette.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

42

n The Foreign Keyboard Mapping function is not needed for English, French, Italian, German, or Spanish.

To set the keyboard mapping for a key:

1. Double-click Keyboard in the Settings scroll list in the Project window.

The Keyboard palette opens.

2. Compare the layout to your physical keyboard.

If some of the letters do not match, you can change the characters displayed in the Keyboard palette.

3. Click the Foreign Keyboard Mapping button.

4. Click the key that you want to change in the Keyboard palette.

The key changes to blue.

5. Press the corresponding key on your keyboard.

The image in the Keyboard palette changes to match your keyboard, and the mapped key remains blue.

n Each language has a certain number of keys that do not map to functions in the Avid editing application. These are referred to as “dead” keys. You cannot map functions to these dead keys. If you try to do so, the system displays an error message.

Moving Older Projects to this Version on Windows

CleanEncode is a utility that changes the character encoding method for a file name from MacRoman to ANSI or vice versa. If you are moving older projects to this version on Windows, you might need to use CleanEncode to convert the older MacRoman encoding to ANSI encoding.

CleanEncode is intended for customers on Windows systems that meet the following criteria:

• If you use special characters to name projects, bins, tapes, or other Avid metadata. Specifically, this includes characters with a value greater than 127 in the ASCII character set. Such characters are common in Western European languages and include accented characters (for example, â or ê).

International Character Support

43

• If you plan to move projects from one of the following Avid editing applications (Windows only) to the current version:

- Avid Media Composer or Film Composer v11.5 or earlier

- Avid Symphony releases v4.5 or earlier

- Avid Xpress v5.5 or earlier

- Avid NewsCutter v3.5 or earlier

- Avid Xpress DV 3.5 or earlier

Complete instructions for using CleanEncode can be found in the CleanEncodeGuide.pdf file. This file is available in the CleanEncode folder in the Utilities folder.

n If you use CleanEncode to process the files in your OMFI MediaFiles folder, delete the .pmr and .mdb database files after you run CleanEncode and restart the Avid editing application. This will ensure that the Avid application recognizes the newly converted names.

n When you upgrade an Avid Unity MediaNetwork workgroup to MediaNetwork v3.2 or higher, MediaNetwork automatically converts file names to file names with characters in Unicode™. If you plan to move Avid files from a the versions listed above onto an existing MediaNetwork v3.2 or higher system, use CleanEncode on the files before you move them onto the network.

Recommendations and Restrictions

This section describes recommendations and restrictions for using international character support on your Avid system.

Avid Supports English Plus One Locale

Make sure that your projects do not contain characters from more than one locale. String compare searches might not work correctly if you combine file names from different locales.

n Within a workgroup, all the systems on the network must be either English or one specific locale.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

44

Entering ASCII Characters in Double-Byte Systems

The following restriction applies to customers who work on double-byte (two-byte) operating systems: If you use ASCII characters to name bins, projects, tapes, or other Avid elements, use single-byte characters. If you use double-byte characters, the characters might appear with extra space between them and the names might not be recognizable by other systems.

Operating systems that use a double-byte character system usually allow the user to choose between single-byte ASCII or double-byte ASCII characters. If you have a choice, use single-byte characters when entering ASCII text.

EDL Manager Does Not Save Diacritical Marks or Chinese Characters

You can display diacritical marks and Chinese characters in EDL Manager but you cannot save an EDL and reopen it with those characters preserved. This includes saving the file to the desktop or to an RT-11 formatted disk. If you plan to create and save an EDL from your sequences you must use ASCII names for tape names.

It is common for customers that use EDLs to copy the EDL onto an RT-11 formatted floppy disk. The RT-11 format has a very limited character set: A-Z (capital letters only), 0-9, space, and $.

Characters to Avoid When Naming Avid Elements

Do not use the Japanese yen symbol in the ASCII character set. The system converts the symbol to a backslash, and this can cause problems with pathnames.

Do not use the Y-acute and Y-diaeresis characters. The system does not recognize the Y-acute character, and it can cause problems with file recognition. The system might not display the Y-diaeresis character correctly.

International Character Support

45

If you plan to move projects between Macintosh and Windows systems, avoid using characters that are not in both the MacRoman and Latin1 (ANSI) character sets. The following two files on the Knowledge Center list the characters you should avoid:

• MacRoman Characters not in ANSI Encoding

• ANSI Characters not in MacRoman Encoding

To access the files on the Knowledge Center

1. Go to www.avid.com.

2. Click Support, and then click Online Support.

3. Under the Avid Knowledge Center heading, click Documentation.

The Knowledge Center opens to the Documentation tab.

4. Click the International Character Support link.

5. The International Character Support page contains links to the HTML files that show the differences between the MacRoman and Latin-1 character sets.

n For the latest version of this information for both Macintosh and Windows systems, see ICS.pdf on the International Character Support page.

To display the characters in the HTML files correctly, you might have to set your Web browser to display characters in Unicode format.

To display characters in Unicode format on Internet Explorer:

t Select View > Encoding > More > Unicode (UTF-8).

Version 4.8 Release Notes

46

Known Problems and Limitations

24p and 25p Projects

➤ 24p Projects: BWF files do not count correctly in an NTSC 24p project. The sync point is correct but the timecode does not increment with pulldown taken into account. The file should drop the :x2 and :x7 frames but it counts continuously instead. This will cause an EDL to be incorrect.

➤ Sony UVW 1800 does not always handle 24p Input/Output correctly. The Sony UVW-1800 deck sometimes misses the A frame at the Mark In point when digitizing or creating a digital cut with 24p material.

Audio

➤ If you are using the Audio Loop Play feature with an audio tool (for example, Audio Mix and Audio Suite) on a clip or sequence that is less than 3 seconds long and have a 1394 device attached, the audio will skip or stall during loop playback. The Audio Loop Play feature works fine if your clips and sequences are 3 seconds or longer.

Workaround: Disconnect the 1394 device from the system.

➤ Audio Loop Play may not work from the AudioSuite Tool or from the Timeline.

➤ Audio Mix tool interface focus gets stuck on the first track area that you edit. This prevents you from using the numeric keypad to make changes on the other track areas. For example, if you make edits in Track 1 you may not be able to make changes in track 2.

Workaround: Do not use the numeric keypad to enter values - just use the sliders. Or restart the application to reinitialize the Audio Mix tool.

Known Problems and Limitations

47

➤ Digital audio scrub may fail in a sequence with mixed resolutions.

Color Correction

➤ In Color Correction mode, Play IN to OUT ignores set IN and OUT points.

If you use Play IN to OUT in Color Correction mode, the system ignores the IN and OUT points. Play starts wherever the position indicator is in the sequence.

➤ Bringing in hot (115 IRE) DV media and then applying safe color limiting to bring it down to 100 IRE can create speckles on the footage.

If the DV footage contains a few dark pixels followed by pixels of increasing saturation (for example, leaves on a tree), the safe-color limiter clips the illegal pixels to 100 IRE, while pixels surrounding the limited pixel are largely unaffected. This creates noticeable speckles in the footage during playback. Similar artifacts can occur in non-DV footage as well, although less often.

Workaround: If broadcaster specifications allow, increase the composite limit above 100 IRE, for instance to 110 or even 120 IRE, but leave the luma limit at 100 IRE. This allows more saturated pixels to go through without limiting, while still preventing illegal superwhite signals.

➤ Limitation: Color correction does not display in QuickTime reference movies. If you add color correction to a sequence, and then export the sequence as a QuickTime reference movie, the movie does not include the color correction.

Digital Cut

➤ Limitation: In a DV project, you must render all of your effects before performing a Digital Cut. The system will not automatically render real time effects while creating a Digital Cut via an OHCI connection.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

48

➤ When you are creating a digital cut through some transcoders to Sony UVW and PVW series decks, the Chroma sync might not lock.

Digitizing

➤ When editing directly to the TImeline from the Digitize Tool, if you digitize a short clip (4 seconds or less) with 2 or 3 second handles, the following error might occur:

Digitize aborted due to lack of pre-allocated disk storage.

Workaround: Digitize a longer clip or change the handles to one second.

➤ Limitation: The HDW-500 deck template does not create a frame accurate digitize when used with an HDW-F500 deck.

Workaround: When working with an HDW-F500 deck, use the generic deck template.

➤ The following limitation applies to digitizing DV25, DV50, and MPEG resolutions: When batch digitizing, digitizing IN to OUT, or digitizing with an IN (and no OUT), you might receive the following error message:

Exception: VIDEO_PROD_DATA_UNDERRUN

If a PVW-2800 or DVW-A500 deck is in PB/EE mode, “Stop” automatically switches from Playback to E to E (or passthrough) and causes a sync fluctuation. If the deck is in Still mode, the deck will remain in Playback and will not cause a sync fluctuation.

When using the PVW-2800 or DVW-A500 deck, you must use setting 401 (After Cue) to 1 (Still). Avid recommends that the PB - PB/EE switch on the front of the deck be switched to PB.

Known Problems and Limitations

49

Note that if you set the IN point far enough away so that the deck has to switch to rewind or fast forward mode to get to it, the digitize might fail with a DIG_DATA_UNDERRUN error. To avoid this problem, manually cue the deck to a spot on the deck within a minute of the IN point and then record.

➤ The Avid editing application may issue an incorrect error message when it reaches the filesize limit that you have set. For example, if you set the file size limit to 2GB in the Digitize settings dialog box and then begin digitizing, the system may display the following error message when the file reaches 2 GB:

Digitze aborted due to lack of storage space on disk ... Discard/Keep?

If you select Keep, the system saves the 2 GB file correctly.

➤ Batch digitizing in a 24p NTSC project continues beyond the logged OUT point, and the system incorrectly adopts the pulldown setting from the batch digitized clip for subsequent digitized clips.

If you log a clip in a 24p NTSC project and then batch digitize the clip, the system keeps recording beyond the logged OUT point. The length of time the system continues recording after the OUT point is proportional to the length of the logged clip. The longer the clip, the longer the system continues to record after the OUT point.

Once you have batch digitized a clip, the system uses the pulldown setting from that clip for subsequent digitized clips. This might result in a digitized clip that has incorrect pulldown. For example, if you batch digitize a clip with C as the pulldown setting (C as the value in the Pullin bin column), a subsequent clip that you digitize will be created as if you had set the IN point on a C frame, regardless of where you actually set the IN point.

These problems only exist when you are batch digitizing video. Audio-only batch digitizing does not show the same errors.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

50

Workaround: You can force the system to revert to the pulldown setting that you will need for subsequent digitizing by batch digitizing a short dummy clip with the appropriate pulldown setting.

➤ You cannot preserve vertical blanking information for S-Video passthrough and capture.

Workaround: If you need to preserve vertical blanking information when you digitize, use SDI, composite, or component. For more information, see “Preserving Information in the Vertical Blanking Interval” in the Help.

➤ Drive filtering is not working with the PortServer Pro application. You can see the problem when you open the Digitize tool. Workspaces are grayed out and not selectable if the target resolution is above 10:1.

Workaround: If you are connected to Avid Unity PortServer via an ethernet connection, disable drive filtering in the Media Creation setting dialog box.

DV Projects

➤ The Avid editing application might be unable to launch if a DV device is turned on while starting the application, or it might be unable to relaunch if a DV device was turned on while quitting the application. If you have a DV device — for example, a DV camera — turned on when you quit Symphony and then attempt to relaunch the application, Symphony might fail to open.

Workaround: Turn off all DV devices before launching or quitting Symphony.

➤ When you play video and audio together in a PAL method 1 project on a Symphony system with the DV option, you might have playback errors.

Known Problems and Limitations

51

➤ If you turn off a DV camera connected to an Avid system, the system might appear to be frozen.

Workaround: Turn the DV camera on or disconnect the 1394 cable from the Avid system.

➤ When you attempt a video mixdown from a DV resolution to an Avid resolution or from an Avid resolution to a DV resolution, an error message appears. If you choose to keep the clip, the system creates an offline clip.

➤ Doing a video mixdown with DV to JFIF or with JFIF to DV resolutions generates an Assertion Failure.

➤ The system may hang if you detach an OHCI device while the Digital Cut and Digitize tools are both open.

Workaround: Before you detach an OHCI device (such as a DV camera) from the system, make sure you don't have both tools open at the same time. If both tools are open, close one of them before disconnecting the device.

➤ Limitation: Audio Punch-In on an NTSC Film project can fail and cause the following error message:

“Exception: ADM_PHX_RECORDING_MUST_BE_AT_SOUND_SPEED”

This problem can happen in an NTSC Film project whenever a DV board is installed on your system.

Workaround: Set the Edit Play Rate in the Film Settings dialog box to 24.

Editing

➤ Performing a video mixdown of a PAL sequence containing both DV 25 420 and DV 25 411 resolutions might take a long time.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

52

➤ The Load Filler command on the Clip menu will not load filler into the Source monitor when the focus is on the Record monitor.

Workaround: Click on the Source monitor before you use the Load Filler command. Note that you use the Add Filler command to add filler to the sequence in the Record monitor.

➤ If you use Telecine Record Emulation or mouse shuttle through a sequence with filler you may get a VDM fatal error. The error may occur in Telecine record mode because it creates a sequence during the record session which always contains filler. This is more prone to happen on slower processors.

EDL Manager

➤ The Source and Output menus might not appear in a 24p or a 25p project if there is no video on track V1. The source and output menus allow you to deliver various output formats by adjusting the timecode in an EDL.

Workaround: If the menus do not appear, make sure there is video on track V1.

➤ When you change options in EDL Manager, save as a template, and then reopen the template, the options might appear to be selected incorrectly. The options are, in fact, set to your selection, but the user interface does not reflect them accurately.

Workaround: Do one of the following:

t Close the options window, and then open it again. The options appear selected correctly.

t Drag the window to the bottom of the screen and back up so that the window is forced to redraw itself. The options appear selected correctly.

Known Problems and Limitations

53

Effects

➤ When rendering a combination of segment and transition effects applied to DV media on an Media Composer DV system or a Symphony system with the DV option, the following error may occur:

DVR fatal error 6 DNA_Buffer_ Empty

Workaround: Render individual segment effects prior to rendering transition effects. If problem persists perform a video mixdown of the segments and and then apply the transition effects.

➤ Effects: Rendering a segment effect with a nested submaster effect generates the following error:

Exception: Drv Fatal Error: 6 DMA_Buffers_Empty

Workaround: Step into the effect and render each track individually.

➤ Color Correction: Dual Split does not appear in the monitors unless you turn on the Show Graphics on Client Monitor setting on the Interface Settings in the Setting scroll list.

Workaround: The setting is on by default in some of the default Interface settings. If Dual Split does not appear, check the Interface settings and make sure that Show Graphics on Client Monitor is turned on.

➤ The following problems occur with AVX Plug-ins and transition effects:

• Transition effects do not unrender when the AVX plug-in on the segment is unrendered.

• If you apply a dissolve to a rendered AVX effect, the system does not automatically recalculate the behavior of the effect to extend around the transition point if necessary.

➤ In Xpress models only, an animated Marquee title may cause errors while rendering in MPEG or single field resolutions.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

54

➤ Titles: Disabling DSK on a 2D system creates problems for playing titles - the system may only play the fill track when it encounters a title. Rendering the title does not fix the problem.

Workaround: Adjust any title parameter by plus or minus 1 and save the title.

➤ Title Tool: Re-editing a title with the Avid Title tool may cause the Undo/Redo list to disappear. You must restart the Avid editing application to restart tge Undo/Redo list.

➤ MPEG and DV rendering times are longer than JFIF rendering time. Note that the Duplicated Fields option in the Render Settings options speeds up rendering for JFIF resolutions but it does not speed up rendering for MPEG or DV resolutions. MPEG and DV resolutions take longer to render than JFIF resolutions.

➤ Limitation: MPEG motion effects take longer to render than JFIF motion effects. In general, any effect will take longer to render on MPEG media than on JFIF media. This is a limitation that is due to the differences in the compression types.

➤ Titles with a Trail effect enabled might flash during playback in 24p PAL projects. If you create a title, promote it to 3D, create a motion path for the title, and enable Trail, the title might flash during playback. It is also possible that the title will stop moving along its path after it flashes.

➤ In the Help topic Using Third-Party Plug-in Effects, several links do not work. The following link lists the vendors that are shipping AVX compatible plug-ins:

www.avid.com/partners/avx/displayPartners.html

➤ Limitation: You might see aliasing artifacts on Picture-in-Picture effects whose parameters are unchanged for the duration of the clip. Your system automatically antialiases Picture-in-Picture effect images whose parameters change over the duration of the clip, but does not automatically antialias static Picture-in-Picture effect images (those whose

Known Problems and Limitations

55

parameters do not change for the duration of the clip). This behavior is designed to avoid the softening effect that can be caused by antialiasing a static image. However, some images might show aliasing artifacts and therefore require antialiasing to be enabled.

Workaround: If your system has the 3D effects option, you can turn on antialiasing for a Picture-in-Picture effect that shows aliasing artifacts by setting either of the Defocus parameters (Horizontal or Vertical) to any non-zero value.

➤ When you are working with two-field media and first activate the Scratch Removal effect, it might use field processing even though the Frame Processing button is selected. If the effect is using field processing, the Frame slider is calibrated from -10 to +10 and increments by fields as you drag it.

Workaround: Click the Frame Processing button once to deselect it, and then click the Frame Processing button a second time to reselect it. The Frame slider is now calibrated in frames (from -5 to +5) and increments by frames as you drag.

➤ You cannot play a partially rendered effect if the precompute is split across different drives. This problem can happen if you attempt to render an effect to a drive that is low on disk space. The system displays a message stating that you might not have enough disk space to store the rendered effect. The message asks whether you want to keep or discard the partial render. In this case, click Discard.

Workaround: Delete the rendered effect, and then render it to a drive that has more available space.

➤ You might encounter problems creating a template from a clip with both FluidMotion™ and color correction applied. The color correction is saved as part of the effect template.

Workaround: When you use the template, remove the color correction. Or copy the clip and remove the color correction before creating the template.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

56

Import and Export

➤ Import, Export AFE export takes much longer across a network than it does exporting to a local drive. When this occurs the Task Manager reports that the Avid application is not responding even thought the export is taking place.

Workaround: Export to a local drive and then copy the exported files across the network.

➤ Import: If you have a sequence containing multiple imported files, a batch import may not automatically locate all the files if they reside in different folders. It may use the location of the first file for all the remaining files.

Workaround: When you perform the batch import, set the file location for each file manually.

➤ Imported matte keys are not displayed in the bin after performing a decompose on a sequence. This occurs even when the Import Clips box is checked in the Decompose dialog box.

Workaround: To batch import the decomposed matte keys, set the bin to display Rendered Effects.

➤ Creating an OMFI export using the Consolidate and Embed options may fail when you attempt export a sub clip that is associated with a larger master clip. The system displays an error that you have reached the 2GB file limit.

Workaround: Either consolidate the sequence first and then export, or cut the portion of the master clip that you want into a sequence, and then consolidate and export.

Known Problems and Limitations

57

➤ The following problems can occur when importing an AAF file:

• Importing an AAF file with embeded media may fail if the embedded media already exists in an open bin. The system displays a dialog box that states that there was a Master clip conflict and then displays an Assertion failed error message.

• When importing an AAF file, the system may appear to hang if there is a master clip conflict.

Workaround: Create a new bin for the imported file and close all other bins. Import the AAF file into the new bin.

➤ Occasionally you may not be able to export a sequence with audio to a DV stream. This can happen if the destination drive is a network drive.

Workaround: Check your network connections. Then disconnect and re-establish the network connection.

➤ If your Avid application has the DV Option and you select OHCI output and Countdown in the Digital Cut tool, the preview fails and displays an error message.

Workaround: Deselect Countdown.

➤ If you have .AAF files of sequences containing Marquee titles that were exported from Symphony Release 4.0, you cannot import them into the current release. You will see an error message that includes “unable to convert Source Mob.”

Workaround: Remove the Marquee titles before you import the sequence.

➤ When you are using After Effects® to render out a file for fast importing into an Avid system with DV compression, you need to use the Avid DV codec to import the file. The Avid DV codec is not available in the Avid application.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

58

Workaround: Download the Avid DV codec from the Avid Knowledge Center. See “Accessing the Knowledge Center” on page 8. Instruction for installing the codec are with the download.

➤ When using composite input, video looks blurry when passed through the Meridien break out box. Digitized clips look this way also, both PAL and NTSC.

➤ Sony® MSW-A2000 template will not work with Servo Lock Mode. If you use another template with the same deck, Servo Lock Mode works correctly.

➤ Video Output Tool controls for Hue and SC Phase are greyed out.

Workaround: Right click the control, select What’s This (opens the Help), and then close the Help. The controls are no longer unavailable and adjustments can be made.

➤ QuickTime Reference movies created from sequences that include filler do not play correctly in the QuickTime Player. The player might continue to play black frames after the end of the filler material or might play all gray or all white frames. Playback problems can occur whether or not the Flatten Video Tracks and Fill Spaces with Black options are selected. The Info window in the QuickTime Player displays what appear to be incorrect frame rates.

Workaround: Perform a video mixdown on the sequence before you create the QuickTime Reference movie or use actual black video instead of filler to create the black segments in your sequence.

➤ If you are in VTR Emulation mode and the Avid system receives a Go To command from the edit controller, the Digitize tool will not initialize passthrough monitoring.

Workaround: Click the Timeline or the Source/Record monitor, and then click the Digitize tool again. Passthrough monitoring will work.

Known Problems and Limitations

59

➤ OMF cross-platform export of crawling titles causes a blue background to appear. If you export an unrendered crawling title from an Avid system for Macintosh to an Avid system for Windows (or vice versa), the color of the title text is changed and the title background is blue.

Workaround: Render the title before export, or re-create title media after import.

➤ You cannot create a DVD from a sequence with no audio tracks.

If you select a sequence with no audio tracks and choose Create DVD from the File menu, a message box appears telling you that your sequence needs at least one audio track. You cannot create a DVD from a sequence with no audio tracks.

Workaround: Add an audio track to your sequence. The track does not need to contain any information but must be present for you to create a DVD.

➤ Clip names longer than 32 characters are truncated when imported in a log file.

If you export a log file with clip names longer than 32 characters, and then reimport the log file, the system changes the clip names. Each reimported clip name consists of the first 32 characters of the original clip name followed by the tape name.

➤ Drag and drop export of AIFF-C, WAVE, or SD2 audio uses the system sample rate only. For example, if you create an export template for AIFF-C with 48 kHz as the sample rate when the system sample rate is 44.1 kHz, the exported audio file will ignore the sample rate setting in the template and will use the sample rate of the system.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

60

International Character Support

➤ When using diacritical marks, exporting a bin as AFE with the default name may cause MediaLog to freeze. The resulting files have incorrect filenames.

Workaround: Don't use the default name when exporting a file as AFE, ALE or Tab Delimited. Rename the file to be exported in the Export dialog box.

➤ On an English OS, before importing files with diacritical marks that were created in and exported from an Avid editor on a French/Italian/German/Spanish (FIGS) OS, the files may display incorrectly. When this happens, the files cannot be imported. This happens more frequently with capital letters that have diacritical marks.

Workaround: Rename the files and import them. You can use diacritical marks in the renaming.

➤ You cannot save an EDL template file that contains Chinese characters.

➤ Limitation: When naming Avid elements, do not use fonts that have an "@" sign at the start of the font name. These fonts are used when intending to display text vertically and, with elements such as bin and clip names, will position letters/characters on their side. Note that you can use these fonts in the Marquee title tool if you wish to rotate text into a vertical position.

➤ Limitation. When using a Changjie or New Changjie keyboard, some characters are displayed as question marks in the Avid application.

➤ If you are working on a FIGS OS and have media files that were created on an Asian OS using Chinese characters, as well as media files created on a FIGS OS, the Media Stream Manager (when you launch the Avid application) may display the following error message in a dialog box:

Known Problems and Limitations

61

Exception: CM_MOB_IN_USE An error occurred validating the media directory.

If the system displays this message, click Ignore All. If you click Continue, all of the media files will remain offline. If you click Ignore All, the Asian media files will be ignored but the FIGS media files will be read correctly.

➤ Limitation: If you cannot display Chinese or Japanese characters in the Avid editor, you may need to regenerate the asifont.map file under the Japanese or Chinese locale. Use one of the following procedures:

• Navigate to Program Files/Avid/<application name> and locate the asifont.map file. Delete the file. Make sure you are in the Japanese or Chinese locale and start the application again. The system will automatically create a new Japanese or Chinese asifont.map file.

• Or uninstall the application. Then reinstall the application under the Japanese or Chinese locale.

Note that the system uses the current locale to create the asifont.map file appropriate for that locale.

➤ When typing in user names, avoid switching between Roman and Asian characters. Depending on the number and juxtaposition of Roman and Asian characters, a warning may appear and unwanted user names will be added to the Avid users list.

➤ Clip names containing characters with diacritical marks or kanji/kana characters do not display correctly in the Timeline for projects created on a Macintosh system. If you open a Macintosh-originated project and load a sequence into the Timeline containing clips whose names include characters with diacritical marks or kanji/kana characters, those characters are replaced with meaningless icons in the clip names that display in the Timeline.

➤ When you click the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window while in foreign keyboard mapping mode, foreign keyboard mapping mode is turned off. When you open the Keyboard window from the Settings scroll list and select Map Foreign Keyboard, you can map user-selectable buttons to the keyboard. If the Windows operating system

Version 4.8 Release Notes

62

is set to French or German regional settings, and you click the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window, a message box opens that says foreign keyboard mapping mode has been turned off.

Workaround: Avoid clicking the center of the Enter key in the Keyboard window. If you do, select Standard, and then select Map Foreign Keyboard again to return to foreign keyboard mapping mode.

Marquee Title Tool

The following is a list of known issues or limitations affecting the Marquee Title Tool.

➤ Soft shadows reduce the responsiveness of the Monitor window. Marquee’s ability to redraw objects in the Monitor window is limited by soft shadows, which take longer to redraw than other objects. If you have soft shadows on large objects or on a large number of small objects, you might see a decrease in Monitor window performance.

Workaround: Use a Medium or High Quality setting while you are creating your soft shadows, then change the Quality setting to Low to speed up responsiveness while you complete other work on the title. For more information, see “Setting the Quality Level for Viewing in the Monitor Window” in the chapter “Creating, Managing, and Viewing Titles” of the Avid Marquee Title Tool User’s Guide.

➤ Times New Roman font must be installed. Marquee will not start if the Times New Roman font is not installed on your system. This font is installed as part of the Windows 2000 operating system and should not normally have been removed.

➤ Some characters do not appear correctly for certain fonts. Some fonts cannot display all characters correctly. For example, the Tab character can sometimes appear as an outline of a box. Other types of characters might not appear at all. This is a limitation of the font itself.

➤ You cannot adjust the kerning after a space character.

Known Problems and Limitations

63

Workaround: Adjust the kerning of the non-space character before the space character.

➤ Selected, extruded text is not always apparent when it intersects another object. If the back side of an extruded text box intersects another object, the selection of the text box’s contents is not apparent because the highlight appears behind the intersecting object.

➤ Right-to-Left directional text is not available for path text. If you use text on a path, the Direction submenu of the Text shortcut menu is not available.

Workaround: Reverse the direction of the path by using the Reverse Direction command in the Shape shortcut menu. You will also need to adjust the rotation of the characters of text.

➤ Shapes might be added to the wrong layer when working with multiple layers. If you create a shape above an existing shape in a layer that is not the current layer, the shape is added to the other layer.

Workaround: Either mute the other layer or create the object away from an existing object, and then move it to the intended location in the scene.

➤ Initial playback of a title with textures might not be real time. If you open a title that uses textures, initial playback of the title is not guaranteed to be real time. Marquee loads the textures on demand from disk.

Workaround: Shuttle through the entire title before you play it. Marquee will load the textures, caching them in memory (if memory is available).

➤ Working in the background while rendering in Fastest mode. When you render using the Fastest rendering method, windows or other objects that appear in front of the Rendering Progress dialog box — for example, screen savers or system messages — might affect the image being rendered.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

64

Workaround: If you do not have to render using the Fastest rendering method, use the Off-screen rendering method instead. If you need to use the Fastest rendering method, turn off screen savers or other programs running in the background, and avoid using Alt+Tab to switch to other running programs.

➤ Artifacts might appear at the corners of lit objects that have an Edge surface.

Workaround: In some cases, adjusting the quality level reduces the number of artifacts.

➤ Marquee Title Tool does not support AVI import. You cannot import AVI files into Marquee because the AVI file format is not supported by Avid’s HIIP image translation technology.

MetaSync

➤ MetaSync does not run correctly with the Java Runtime Environment v1.4. Do not update your Java Runtime Environment to v1.4. See “Suggestions for Optimum Performance” on page 36.

➤ Limitation: MetaSync Manager and MetaSync Publisher are not supported on a non-English Macintosh operating system.

➤ You cannot use OUT points to autosync a MetaSync enhancement clip with video. When you select a video clip in the bin along with a MetaSync enhancement clip and choose AutoSync from the Bin menu, the AutoSync dialog box does not appear and the system uses the default AutoSync method of sync to IN points.

Workaround: Make sure you have IN points set correctly and then choose AutoSync from the Bin menu. The clips will be synced to the IN points.

Known Problems and Limitations

65

➤ Limitation: Batch importing is not supported for updating MetaSync enhancements. If you attempt to batch import a MetaSync enhancement file, the operation fails and the system displays an Assertion Failure error message.

Workaround: Use the following procedure instead:

1. Select the enhancement in the bin.

2. Choose Modify Enhancement from the Clip menu.

3. Click Refresh or Refresh All in the dialog box that appears.

Monitors

➤ If you are using dual monitors and you use Internet Explorer, you might have serious display problems. The display problems are a result of conflicts between Internet Explorer and Windows 2000. Avid recommends Internet Explorer 5.01 SP2 when you use a dual-monitor system. When later versions (for example, Version 5.5) are used on dual-monitor systems, there might be serious display problems. If you are using a version of Internet Explorer that experiences the problem, you might clear the problem with the following steps. The problem will return when you reboot your system.

Workaround: To temporarily disable and then enable the second monitor, do the following:

1. Right-click on the desktop, and then choose Properties.

The Display Properties dialog box appears.

2. Click the Settings tab.

3. Click the #2 monitor icon.

4. Deselect “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.”

5. Click Apply.

The second monitor will appear black.

6. Click the #2 monitor icon again.

7. Click “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.”

Version 4.8 Release Notes

66

8. Click Apply.

The second monitor is displayed again.

9. Click OK.

Multicamera

➤ Multicam: The image freezes in the monitor when the initial mouse shuttle speed is greater than 30fps (NTSC) and then the mouse is moved to less than 30fps.

Workaround: Stop mouse shuttle by pressing the space bar, then begin shuttling again. Or mouse shuttle to a reverse speed and then back to a positive speed less than 30 fps.

➤ Multicam: Selecting the Hide Video option in Multicam mode generates an Assertion error message. Don't use the option for this release.

➤ If you apply a Timewarp effect on a multicam sequence, all source clips display the effect.

➤ In Multicamera mode, if you play a sequence that includes real-time motion effects, the clip that contains the motion effect plays as black.

Play

➤ Video does not display in the Client monitor when you first enter a PAL project. When you enter a PAL project for the first time and attempt playback, video does not display in the Client monitor, and the levels in the Video Output tool are all set to zero rather than to the default values.

Known Problems and Limitations

67

Workaround: In the Video Output tool, reset levels to the default values. The video image will appear in the Client monitor and video will appear correctly in the Client monitor for all subsequent PAL projects. For more information on the Video Output tool, see "Calibrating for Video Output" in the "Generating Output" chapter of the input and output guide.

➤ Playback is jittery when you trim using the J-K-L keys if you are working with DV or MPEG media and the Dual Image Play Trim setting is enabled.

Workaround: Disable the Dual Image Play setting.

➤ Playing 1:1 filler or adding a real time effect to 1:1 media may cause an Unsupported Resolution error in a PAL 25i project.

Workaround: Delete and rebuild two media database files in the Avid_MediaFiles folder as follows:

1. Quit the Avid editing application.

2. Navigate to the Avid_MediaFiles folder. For example:

drive:\Program Files\Avid\Avid Media Composer\SupportedFiles\Avid_MediaFiles

drive:\Program Files\Avid\Avid Film Composer\SupportedFiles\Avid_MediaFiles

3. Delete the following files: msmFID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb

4. Restart the application. The system will automatically rebuild the files.

➤ VTR Play Emulation Problem: If you cue to the next or previous frame by using the Go To command on the edit controller, a search error appears on the edit controller.

SDTI-CP

➤ SDTI-CP: You may receive the following error when you click the Record button to complete a digitize on-the-fly operation.

The user aborted digitization.

In this case the system does not save the clip.

Workaround: The problem only happens when digitize fails to initialize audio. Do one of the following:

• Verify that the audio meters are active after starting to record when digitizing on the fly.

• Digitize IN to OUT instead of digitizing on the fly.

➤ SDTI-CP Video-only recording may not be frame accurate or may show discontinuous timecode.

Workaround: Record video and audio together and delete audio afterwards. Also, try performing one video and audio recording and then continuing with video-only recordings. This fixes the discontinuos timecode on most decks. It fixes the frame accuracy on decks other than the DNW-A75.

System

➤ If you receive the following message when starting the Avid system, the Avid application will not start:

“Exception occurred while initializing Media Stream Manager, exception: MSM no directory specified.”

You need to delete two files to fix the problem.

Known Problems and Limitations

69

To delete the two files:

1. Locate the Avid application folder and open it.

2. Double-click the SupportingFiles folder

3. Double-click the Avid_MediaFiles folder.

4. Select the msmFMID.pmr and the msmMMOB.mdb files, and then press the Delete key.

5. Restart the Avid application.

➤ When you copy an Avid bin from a Windows 2000 NTFS volume to a non-NTFS volume, the following error message appears, “Confirm stream loss. The file name.avb.” The bin contents are transferred intact despite the error message. You can ignore this error message.

n This message appears when you access the file from the Windows desktop. The error does not appear in the Avid application.

Workgroups

➤ You might receive the following error message while dragging media from Media Manager into your bin:Unimplemented operation file: coresw\ame\compman\ASequence.c line 963

Click Continue from error message. If you click abort, you might get a runtime error and lose all your unsaved work.

n You should be sure to do a final update after all chunking operations have completed to ensure that all such errors in sequence data have been corrected.

Workaround: After you click continue, perform a bin save and then restart the editor application.

➤ Workgroups and Effects: If you perform a desktop checkin of a Photoshop file with layers, your Avid editing application will not import the file correctly. The system displays an Access Violation error.

Version 4.8 Release Notes

70

Workaround: Copy the file onto a local drive or onto a Unity drive without checking it out through MediaManager.

➤ Workgroups: Playing an MPEG50 sequence with an unrendered Marquee rolling title may cause a DMFA or underrun error on an Avid Unity MediaNetwork.

Workaround: Render the Marquee title.

➤ Workgroups and 24p Titles Crawling titles checked out of MediaManager display errors in a 24p project. When loading the clip into the source or record monitor the system displays an Exception error.

Workaround: Modify and save the title on the second system and the title will be usable again. If the crawling title is rendered prior to checkin, then it can be checked out on another client. If not, then it needs to be modified and resaved on the client that checked it out.

➤ Workgroups: If you perform a Modify or AutoSync operation on a clip, the changes may not be reflected in MediaManager during an auto save, bin close, or manual save of the bin.

Workaround: Manually check the clip into MediaManager.

➤ Workgroups: OMF imports of QuickTime with alpha look and play online but they show up as offline in the Timeline. This is evident if you choose Offline Clip Color from the Timeline menu. There is not a problem with the media. Offline Clip Color is showing incorrect information in this case.

➤ Workgroups: If you perform a video mixdown to a workspace that is almost full, the Avid editing application may quit unexpectedly with a –36 error.

Workaround: Make sure you have enough space available before you create media on a workspace.

Known Problems and Limitations

71

➤ Workgroup and imported graphics: Checking out an OMF file containing a pic sequence with alpha generates an unsupported resolution error.

Workaround: Quit the Avid editing application, restart the application, and create a new project. Checkout a valid version of the imported graphic into a bin then open the bin containing the original clip that had the problem. The clip should be online now.

➤ Workgroups: If you save a copy of a bin in a shared MediaNetwork project, it is not automatically checked into MediaManager. The new bin appears to have the correct information but if you save and close all bins and then reopen the copied bin it may be empty.

Workaround: Re-check the media into the second bin. This allows you to access the media but MediaManager is still reflecting incorrect information because the original bin is now tracking information in the second bin.

➤ If you want to check a sequence that contains MetaSync tracks into MediaManager, manually check the sequence in as an AAF file.

➤ A Macintosh client on an Avid Unity MediaNetwork system might not recognize an ALE file that was created on a Windows NT or a Windows 2000 client. For example, if you export a group of clips in a bin as an ALE file from a Windows NT client onto an Avid Unity MediaNetwork workspace and then try to import the same file into a Macintosh client, the system might display the following error message: “the file format of 'filename.ale' is not supported for import.”

Workaround: This happens because the Avid Unity file system does not save the resource fork information associated with the file. To fix the problem with the file:

1. Copy the file from the Windows NT or Windows 2000 client to a non-Avid Unity network drive.

2. Copy the file to the Macintosh client, and then perform the import as usual.
