I have often wondered what Jesus meant by these words “How blessed are you who are poor ... ( Luke 6:20)”. I came across these lines when I first read them in the book “Adventures of Tom Sawyer “by Mark Twain. Poor Tom was trying to memorise the eight beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount and like most Sunday school children his mind kept wandering on to more pleasing matters. And so the recitation went as follows :

“ Blessed are the a-a-a” “Poor” prompted Mary, his cousin“Yes – poor; blessed are the poor - a -...“In spirit” prompted Mary“Ah—In spirit - ; blessed are the poor in spirit, for they—“Theirs-“ True - The Beatitudes are difficult to memorise and even more difficult to

practise and adopt into our day to day lives.Luke's Gospel refers to the “poor” whilst Mathew's Gospel makes a

distinction – “poor in spirit”In both versions, the poor are those who are in need, for example, the

destitute, the sick, the disabled, the social outcast. The poor are victims of injustice, the result of exploitation. The beatitudes are a call to liberate mankind from this miserable situation. The Beatitudes form the kernel of Christ's teachings and defines his followers who are called to live by it.

Mahatma Gandhi was deeply influenced by the Beatitudes and Christ's teaching of doing good to evil. It later on became the source was his Satyagraha movement and his principle of non- violence.

Sadly, Gandhi was disappointed with lives of Christians he encountered in Africa and India.

He famously once said “I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians.

Blessed are the poor for the Kingdom of God is theirsValentine D'Souza

Your Christians are so unlike your Christ”. In his book “The Mahatma, IL Duce and The Crucifix, Fr. Peter

Gonsalves SDB , gives us an interesting account of Mahatma Gandhi's visit thto the Sistine chapel on December 12 1931. Pope Pius IX could not give an

audience to Gandhi but instead arranged a tour of the Vatican museums and the Sistine chapel.

As Gandhi went around the Sistine chapel, the great Renaissance paintings by Michelangelo, Perugino, Botticelli, left him unmoved. Gandhi was drawn to the high altar, but not to Michelangelo's famous Last Judgement that adorned the wall behind it. On the high altar was a simple wooden crucifix on which hung an image of the dying Christ, half naked, bruised and bloodied and suspended by nails in his hands and feet. He surveyed the cross from all sides moving back and forth and his eyes filled with tears. A few days later home ward bound on the ship S.S. Pilsna, he would write in his diary.

“What would not I have given to be able to bow my head before the Living Image at the Vatican of Christ Crucified! It was not without a wrench that I could tear myself away from that scene of living tragedy. I saw there at once, that nations like individuals could only be made through the agony of the Cross and in no other way... Joy comes not out of infliction of pain on others, but out of pain voluntarily borne by oneself. I am, therefore, returning home not filled with disappointment but with hope enriched.”

Mahatma Gandhi strived to live the Beatitudes and make them a part of his life. Yet he remained a devout Hindu.

In the season of Lent, let us reflect on the Christ's teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and perhaps we might be inspired to find some meaning that will make a difference in our lives.

We will then be followers of Christ worthy of emulation.

thOn 8 Dec 1854, Pope Pius the IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus.

th thThree years later between 11 February 1858 to 16 July 1858, The Virgin Mary appeared in a Cave of Massabielle in the vicinity of Lourdes in France to a 14 year old Bernadette Soubirous who came from a poor family, a very sickly child & suffering from asthma. Bernadette had a series of 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. During these apparitions Mary revealed her identity with the words “Que Soy Era Immaculado Conception”, I am the Immaculate Conception and among other messages and affirmations told Bernadette that a Chapel be built by the clergy, additionally she wanted people to come in processional form in the Chapel. Bernadette steadfastly defended the genuineness of these visions and despite strong opposition from her parents, the local clergy & civil authorities she faithfully transmitted Mary's messages.

A Brief Summary of the th

Apparitions: On 11 January 1858 Bernadette along with her sister Toinette and a neighbor friend Jeanne Abadie had gone along the river Gave to gather wood, as they had to Cross a canal of cold water, Bernadette stayed back due to her fragile health, when suddenly she was startled by a peculiar wind and rustling sound. Bernadette looked up towards the grotto and the caves on the riverbank, near the opening of the grotto, Bernadette glanced and noticed the cave was suddenly filled with golden light. Lifting up her eyes, she saw a lady of great beauty, dressed in a pure white robe with a blue sash, a veil over her head, a rosary clasped in her hands and yellow roses at her feet. The Virgin Mary

smiled at Bernadette and asked her to say her rosary, as Bernadette prayed the rosary; the Lady passed the beads of her rosary between her fingers but remained silent. She did recite the Gloria's with her, however after the recitation of the rosary the Virgin Mary vanished, since than Bernadette felt drawn to the grotto, during the third apparition the Virgin Mary asked Bernadette to return every day for fifteen days. She wanted Bernadette to tell the priests to build a chapel there. She also asked her to drink water from the stream, besides this she thought her a beautiful prayer, which she recited daily for the rest of her life. She never revealed the prayer to anyone, she was also asked to carry a blessed candle with her during the apparitions. The purpose of the apparitions in Lourdes was to warn Bernadette to pray and make sacrifices for conversion of sinners. During the apparitions Bernadette's face would be transfigured with a strange radiance and would be joyful, and she would occasionally bow low, she never failed to carry with her a lighted candle to the Grotto during one of the apparition Bernadette unconsciously placed one of her hands over the flame of the candle. People witnessed the flame burning through her fingers. Bernadette did not even hear the cries of horror which arose from the crowd. She continued to pray for at least fifteen minutes while flame burned through her hand she emerged quietly from prayer unscathed. Bernadette obediently did the things the Virgin Mary asked of her. They watched Bernadette scrape away soil beside the grotto until a spring of water started to trickle out. Today this spring provides 27000 gallons of water every day and Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage, worship, healing and the holy water is sacred for performing miracles. Moral and spiritual cures are more marvelous than physical cures. Anyone who visits Lourdes never leaves the place without gaining deep and renewed faith and a readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters. Our Lady of Lourdes Pray for Us.

Bernadette Soubirous

A baby girl named Bernadette Soubirous was born in Lourdes, France, in 1844. Her family was very poor, and she was responsible for caring for her brothers and sisters.

Bernadette was a good natured girl with dark eyes and a round face. The only education Bernadette received was the Catholic teachings which she studied faithfully in the evenings.

At the age of 13, Bernadette was preparing for her First Holy Communion. One of her chores was to collect wood for the fire. On a cold day in February 1858, Bernadette and her 2 companions headed off to the Gave River to collect pieces of wood. The 2 companions ran ahead and left Bernadette struggling to keep up. As Bernadette was taking off her shoes to make her way through the river, she was startled by a peculiar wind and rustling sound.

Lifting up her eyes, she saw a lady of great beauty, dressed in a pure white robe with a blue sash, a veil over her head, a rosary clasped in her hands and yellow roses at her feet. Bernadette

rubbed her eyes. What a beautiful lady! But where did she come from? And what was she doing here?

The beautiful lady smiled at Bernadette and asked her to say her rosary. Bernadette said her prayers and when she had finished she looked up, the lady had vanished. Bernadette told them about the vision she had just witnessed. The girls told Bernadette she was silly and probably just seeing things.

Bernadette felt drawn to the grotto and returned there the next Sunday. Again Bernadette saw the beautiful lady. The third time she went to the grotto, the lady spoke to her. The beautiful lady asked Bernadette to come here every day for fifteen days. The Lady wanted her to tell the priests to build a chapel there. The Lady told Bernadette to drink water from the stream. The lady also told her to pray for the conversion of sinners.

Bernadette followed the requests. On March 25, the Lady finally told Bernadette that she was Mary, the

mother of Jesus, and that her purpose in appearing was to warn her to pray and make sacrifices for the sinners. Crowds of people began to gather and watch Bernadette as she examined the cave and obediently did the things the lady asked of her. They watched Bernadette scrape away soil beside the grotto until a spring of water started to trickle out. Would you believe this spring still provides 27,000 gallons of water everyday!

This Lourdes water which heals all! At first, the priests, the town's folk, and the families doubted Bernadette's visions and the purpose of her activities. Eventually everyone did believe Bernadette and the grotto at Lourdes became a place of worship and the Lourdes holy water was sacred for performing miracles.

At the age of 22, Bernadette became a nun and consecrated her life to Mary, to pray for the conversion of sinners and to the service of God. Bernadette died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 36. Today, Lourdes remains one of the most frequented Christian shrines in the world. More than 3 million visitors, pilgrims and tourists come each year to the Grotto of Massabielle, where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette 18 times in 1858.

Every time the chime “Ave, Ave, Ave Maria” went on one could experience the presence of our Blessed Mother at Lourdes. I was really privileged to visit this magnificent Grotto and the spring personally and to experience the blessings of our Mother. Though the water in the baths which was kept for the sick for the immersion was icy cold, I felt warm and enjoyed the holy dip.

Thousands of sick on their wheel chair taking part in the candle procession is a wonderful sight. Daily many miracles take place and the sick go home completely healed praising God. Mary, our dear Mother, pray for us your Children and increase our faith in Jesus and in you.

“But now - declares Yahweh – come back to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping, mourning. Tear your hearts not your clothes and come back to Yahweh, your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in faithful love and he relents about inflicting disaster.” (Joel 2:12-13).

Once again, God summons us back to himself; it is the call of the loving father to the prodigal sons and daughters to repentance, to give up sinful ways with all our hearts. He wants us to have total conversion of hearts (Tear your hearts), not some cosmetic changes (not your clothes).

Those who find most difficult to repent are not the 'hardened sinners' but those who consider themselves good. They do not feel the need to change. They satisfy themselves with their pious practices, but their hearts are far away from God and have no concern for their fellow men. Instead they sit in judgment of others with a 'holier than thou' attitude. Jesus wants us against displaying piety before men (Mathew 6:1) and being like the hypocrites (Mathew 6:5).

Lent reminds us of three traditional means of making us holy: prayer, fasting and alms giving. St. Augustine says, “If you wish your prayer fly towards God, give it two wings: fasting and alms giving.” Fasting in other words abstaining from things which we like, which give us pleasure, entertainment etc. disciplines our body and mind. Our body

craves for food, sleep and sex. Fasting and abstinence is denying the body what it craves for thus bringing it under control. It also helps to control our mind and our emotions. All the holy men and women did it and thus overcame sinful tendencies, tamed their passions and grew closer to God.

We should not end up only by giving up or denying ourselves many good things of the world. We must also do positive things.

1. Let us fast on judging others and feast on Christ dwelling in others.

2. Fast from words that pollute and hurt others, feast on words that purify and build others up.

3. Fast on complaining and feast on appreciation.4. Fast from pessimism and feast on optimism5. Fast from anger, feast on patience6. Fast from bitterness, feast on forgiveness7. Fast from self-concern, feast on compassion8. Fast from idle gossip, feast on purposeful silence9. Fast from personal anxiety, feast on unceasing prayer10. Fast from discontent and feast on gratitude

Heavenly Father, as I begin the Lenten season this year, send your Holy Spirit on me to help and strengthen me and give, me the wisdom to know, what change you desire within me. Help me give up my sinful ways and come back to you with all my heart. Grant me the grace to persevere in my journey towards you. Thank you, Jesus.

Election dates are not declared yet but by the time this piece falls in your hands they may be already declared and campaigning in full swing. Are you ready? Not for the elections but to listen to the barbs of all those so called leaders that will flock to your door, meet and hug you as you pass along; and listen to the endless promises that will take you to the paradise and beyond!

One of our yesteryears prominent leaders was of the opinion that Lok Sabha elections are of not much significance to the state as we have only two seats, one in the North and the other in the South and they have hardly any voice in the parliament. But I tend to disagree with him as even these two, if they put their hearts in their work and have the love of their state and her people, can do a lot: and do they must! Any leader who is committed, conscientious and compassionate, having enough competence can do wonders to the state and her denizens. So when you enter the booth don't let the wild rumblings of the so called savior of the state sway your mind. Don't go by the magnanimity of the promises made but see whether he/she possesses the four C's listed above-commitment, conscience, compassion and competence. We need leaders who will not only seek development for the sake of development but also leaders who will feel the pulse of the electors, confide with them and take them along the path of progress. There's

a thin line between development and progress. We need progressive leaders. Modern leaders mostly think of development as development fattens their pockets and their bellies. What people should look forward to is the progress of the state along with its people.

Our forefathers and the framers of the constitution were men of foresight.

In the first place they gave us a written constitution so that the people of India will not be swayed by the whims and fancy of the rulers i.e. the elected representatives. Stringent measures are put forward for the amendment of the constitution. But alas! Our leaders once elected are law unto themselves. The democratic process that has been bestowed upon us is so vibrant that even the son of a chaiwala could become the Pradhan Mantri of our great nation! But, was he really the son of a chaiwala or are the people of this great nation taken for a jolly joy ride? Only the wearer of the shoe knows where it bites. The humble origins of this great man should have made him compassionate of the feelings of the masses. And the masses comprise of poor men and women, farmers and artisans of this land. The shoe is definitely

on the wrong foot.B.J.P, the party ruling at the centre and the state came into prominence on

the premise that members of Congress, the earlier ruling party were thugs or looters. Swayed by the rhetoric of promises the people of India elected the party with a difference. But now it looks lie it has become a differently-able party. It looks like the party with a difference has one single agenda-by hook or by crook, be the masters of all the states of India with an avowed objective of amending the constitution. The framers of our constitution must be tossing and turning in their graves.

So when the time comes for elections, who do we vote for? Pause for a moment and reflect:-“Are these men and women who are so keen to serve you, really interested in your welfare?” Analyze their life, background, service to society before becoming a panch member or a councilor or an MLA or MP. What is their loyalty to the family, friends, religious group, village or society? Have they at any time of their lives gone out of their way to serve others? Or are they guided by self-appeasement, self-pity or self- enrichment? This analysis should give you a fair idea of the type of person you are about to vote for. The following example will give you a better idea of the type of persons who contest and win elections in Goa. Take the case of the two MLAs who resigned from Mandrem and Shiroda constituencies and defected from the Congress to join the BJP. They were elected on Congress tickets on Congress ideology. They should have stuck with the party ideology and the party manifesto. They found the pasture greener on the other side of the fence. Both were elected with a wide margin of votes against their bitter rivals who belonged to BJP. The people elected them because they believed in the ideology of the party to which they belonged. What right did they have to defect to a party with an opposing ideology? They will come back to you begging for your votes, your time and maybe your goodwill to convince others to vote and elect them once again. Will you elect such persons again? Do they deserve to be elected? Such people are there only for self-aggrandisement and should be kicked out. Now you decide whether you want to stick with such leaders or you want a change- change for the better. Or maybe, you will think they are contesting from Shiroda and Mandrem, in constituencies far away from my residence; it doesn't affect me. Think again, think Goa. Our tiny picturesque Goa deserves a better deal and only you my dear friend can save her. Maybe you have friends/relatives in these two constituencies-convince them. Our forefathers made a lot of sacrifices to bestow upon us this beautiful emerald called Goa. And it is our duty to present it to our children and their children in the same green form as it was given to us and not concrete grey as these so called monsters want it to be. So when you go out to vote whether for parliamentary or assembly elections make it a point to keep the greedy monsters out. And why elect the same old faces again and again? When the same people are elected overtime, they get drowned in power and tend to be despotic. So, when the time comes to make a choice, do wear your wise caps and choose well.

My four years of being in P.P.C has been a journey of varied experiences.

Thought I was a bit hesitant in the beginning due to my other obligations, I trusted in God to do his will and accepted to be the representative of my ward. During this tenure I had an opportunity to know more about myself and my fellow parishioners. During the visits, in our ward, I came to know the real problems and difficulties people face, specially the senior citizens, and in times I tried my best to be a solace to them.

Also I had an opportunity to help the people of other faiths in my locality and felt inner tranquility. But most importantly I got an opportunity to know the trials and tribulations of our Priests, which they face while assuming the role of leadership. And hence I feel that it is each ones duty to come forward and render our help to the Parish Priest through the Parish Pastoral Council (P.P.C). So that our Church may grow in unity and oneness.

Different activities were carried out during my tenure as a P.P.C Member:

- Every year, we had Holy Eucharistic Celebration in a particular house decided in the meeting. Here we had the opportunity to come together, share our views, know each other better, laced with games, buffet and cultural items.

- Every month, we had the Somudai (Small Christian Communities) and here we took important decisions such as:

a) Visiting Old Aged Homes

b) Visiting Senior Citizens in our ward

c) Visiting poor Hindu families especially during Christmas and helping them with basic food items.

Now at the end of my tenure, I would like to thank all my dear people, who instilled their faith in me and elected me as their P.P.C Member.

I thank all my people who rendered their whole hearted love, support, co-operation to me at all times. God Bless each one of you and your families.

My sincere Thanks to our Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Alex D'Souza and Deacon Christopher Fernandes & my fellow PPC Members for their support and prayers.

I was excited for this big day ever since I was put in the first holy communion class. It all began in June when my catechism teachers Ms Savia, Ms Mellisa, Sir Casmiro and Sr Gracy started teaching me about receiving Jesus in my heart. I had to learn all the common prayers which I did. In the month of November we had beautiful talks given to us by different catechists and sisters as well. I enjoyed brother Christopher's talk and the pictures he showed us and learnt lots. Our close preparation was in January where I learnt about the sacrament of Confession. My parents helped me

thprepare for this sacrament and finally the day came on 17 of January where I received the sacrament. I was very nervous as first time I was going to tell my sins to Fr. But Jesus helped me and I felt the most happiest after receiving this sacrament. My teachers prepared me to read for mass and to sing a beautiful hymn too.

thFinally the big day came for which I was waiting. 20 of January where I

received Jesus in my heart. I was so excited in the morning to wear my new dress and reach church on time. Along with my parents and sisters I came to church at 9. The mass began and I was a bit nervous again. Brother gave a very meaningful homily. He made us understand each and every word. I finally received Jesus and felt very happy. I prayed to Jesus to always stay in my heart and to give me the strength and keep me safe always. After mass fr gave us certificates and a gift and we cut cake too. As I got back home my parents had a small lunch party for me and I enjoyed the day with my family, neighbours and friends. I wish to thank my parents, fr Alex and my catechists for preparing me so well for this day.

Joanna R Braganza, Naika vaddo

Since the day my parents told me this year I would receive Jesus for the very first time in my heart, I was a very happy girl. I would look for Sunday to come and every Saturday I would prepare myself for Sunday by waking up early. I loved learning my prayers and listened to all that my teachers told me. I would ask many questions to my parents about Jesus. The day of my First holy communion was the best day of my life.I remember every single moment when I went up to receive Jesus. I felt a new child of Jesus. I know Jesus loves little children and have now decided to follow Jesus.

REPORT OF PPC SESSION IIIrd thThe 3 PPC session was held on the 5 of December in the church hall.

Joseph D'souza led the group in prayer followed by reading the word of God. The moderator Peter then welcomed Rev Fr. George Fernandes the speaker of the day. The topic for the session was Essentials of PPC. Fr explained the vision of the church, the reason why we are here, why we need to read the Bible everyday and how we have to be an instrument to others.

He started by a group discussion wherein representatives had to differentiate between sorpotel and xacuti. The common factors were also discussed. The key to both being the essence of Love. He then explained that the essence of our church is Love and how relationships bind us together.

The 4 main essentials were then explained-1. ONE-EK- how we have to be ONE without groupism as we are all members of one church.

2.POVITR-HOLY- we become holy only when we know God and not when the spirit comes on us.

3.CATHOLIC- We don't become catholic only when we come to church. Wherever we are we should imbibe the values of Jesus.

4.APOSTOLIC- by being apostolic, we carry out the mission of Jesus and be a witness to others.

Group discussions were held on each of these essentials with reading the word of God. Fr explained how we need to be one holy catholic apostolic church. A ppc member needs to know his/her community 24x7. He has to be sensitive to the needs of the community. Main role-to make SCC's strong. And each one is called to build a community.

Lastly, Fr asked all to hold hands and pray for each other and to bless each other. Fr Alex thanked Fr George and the session ended with a hymn.

REPORT OF PPC SESSION IVth ndThe 4 PPC session was held on the 22 of January, 2019 in the church

hall. Carol Pacheco led the group in prayer with reading of the word of God with a short reflection. Peter then welcomed the speaker of the day Rev Fr Leo Fernandes. A short report of the previous session was read out by Pauline D'cunha. Fr began by giving a brief of the previous sessions. The topic for the days session was 'Gonvllik Sobhechem Fuddariponn kitem?” (Leadership style)

The session was divided into three parts-SEE, JUDGE and ACT. In the

28

Sant Annacho Avaz December2018-January 2019 Voros:4 Ank :2

first part, Fr read out a story wherein questions were given to the groups for discussion. The groups participated well. The groups learnt how to have love for God and man and not to make any discrimination. In the second part, the word of God was read from the Gospel of Mt:20:20-28. where Jesus questions the sons of Zebedee whether they are ready to drink from the same cup. Once again questions were given for group discussions. Fr explained that we must be ready to suffer and serve the people. Leaders have to go through hardships and as a PPC leader we have to learn to empower the people. We must try to give mutual respect to each other especially between the parish priest and lay faithful.

In the third part the group was asked to reflect in what ways he/she can change, what he/she needs to give up on and what type of traits he/she must possess? They were also asked to reflect on structural change I.e by taking the servant style of leadership, where can we adapt these traits in the small christian communities? The session ended with a prayer.

A beautiful creation of God! The angel on earth makes our life a wonderfulexperience all together. Imagining life without a woman is quiet hard hitting. This angel shakes the cradle with one hand and the earth with the other. Infact all the great people of the world areborn from the womb of a woman and it is a woman from whom those great people have taken their initial teachings. Hence due respect is given to wemen and their life and

thwemens day is celebrated on the 8 of March everyyear. The International theme for this years wemens day is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for a change”.

Celebrating womens day is a way of feeling gratitude to the each and every woman in ones life, be it in the professional or the personal life.

thInternational womens day is observed every year on 8 of march and is observed around t h e w o r l d t o c e l e b r a t e t h e velour of women. We m e n f r o m various cultural and ethnic groups come together crossingall the boundaries to remember their struggle of many d e c a d e s f o r peace, justice , e q u a l i t y a n d development. The day allows wemen to raise her voice for an equal opportunity in whatever field she wants to participate in; same a man is provided with.

A general myth that exists in the society is that issues related to women empowerment can only be addressed at an infinitesimally slower pace. Many people go out there in society believe that the gender gap not really exists and some are also of the the belief that the efforts made by individuals cannot actually make difference to the gender gap that exits in the society. These beliefs have over the years debilitated the power of wemen. The first in this endeavour to eradicating this deep rooted menace is realizing that the problem can only be identified and solved by interacting with the people

who are actually irrational taboos of the society. Pope Francis says women suffer from a throwaway culture and Jesus

“changed history” by ending women's second-class status in society. Jesus doctrine about women changes history. Before Jesus, the view about women was one thing; but after Jesus they are another. Jesus dignifies women and puts them on the same level as men because he takes that first word of the creator, both are 'the image and likeness of God'. Both of them; not first the man and then a little lower down the woman. Both are equal. And a man without a woman beside him-whether as a mother, as a sister, as a bride, as a working companion, as a friend-that man himself isnot the image of God.

However, women are still objectified in todays world, and images are used in advertising often 'humiliated' women or featured them “wearing noclothes” women are victims of a disposable mentality, not just in far away places but all around us. It is a sin against God the creator to reject wemen because without her men cannot be the image and likeness of God says Pope Francis. How many times do young wemen have to sell themselves as disposable objects inorder to get a job? This happens everywhere. Wemen are being exploited and marketed. Should we sit back and allow wemen to be trampled underfoot just because she is a woman? Its something serious to sit back and think about.

The International theme for 2019 wemens day is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”. the theme will focus on innovative ways in which wemen can advance gender equality and the empowerment of wemen, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure.

To the men- Respect women not because they are women but because they are individuals with their own identity.

To the women- thank God that you are one and cherish the blessing of being a woman. God created the feminine creature as a symbol of outmost affection that not only leads the perfect life for herself but also lays down the strongest base for others dreams as well. HAPPY WOMENS DAY !
