In Macau last weekend our ACAMIS girls came 5 th in their tournament after narrowly missing the semi finals. However, they were voted the most sporting team for the second ACAMIS tournament in a row. The boys won all their games and the first place trophy, which is also the second tournament in a row. Although we participate in many ACAMIS sports and cultural events there are three core sports: volleyball, basketball and football (soccer). We wish our teams more success in the football season as the boys go for an unbeaten year and the girls play hard, but most importantly play fair. Let’s get that Triple for the first time in NIS history. A huge shout out to our coaches, who are teachers that dedicate extra time to coaching. Also, a shout out to Ms Anna who sends more WeChat updates than seems humanly possible making parents feel as if they are at the tournament. Have a fabulous February, Laurie McLellan [email protected] Congratulations to our ACAMIS Basketball teams

International Schools Assessment February 18-22, 2019 The International Schools Assessment (ISA) for students in Grades 5-10 will take place during Week 22. These assessments are one of many sources of data that we use to inform teaching and learning at NIS. Please read these common questions and answers for details: Q: Who designed the International Schools Assessment? A: The International Schools Assessment is designed by The Australian Council for Educational Research Ltd (“ACER”) for students in international schools and schools with an international focus. Q: What areas of learning does the test assess? A: At NIS, students will take two sub-tests: narrative writing, and expositional writing. Q: Why does NIS choose to run the ISAs? A: The results provides us with data on

-!longitudinal tracking of student growth over time at NIS; -!how NIS students perform against national school systems; -!how NIS students perform against other “like” schools; -!how we can continue to develop and improve our NIS curriculum outcomes.

ACER work very consciously to ensure that the ISAs are culturally unbiased. Q: How can my child prepare for the tests? A: There is no need for your child to do any special preparation. We encourage students to get a good night’s sleep and enjoy a healthy breakfast, as on any day of the year.

Q: Do all students in Grades 5 to 10 take the ISAs? A: We strive to include as many students as possible. Students with particular learning needs may receive support in the form a scribe. Only students with very limited English or exceptional learning needs will be exempt from these tests. Q: Does this affect my child’s grades at NIS? A: No - the data is used internally for school improvement and student growth only. Q: When will I get the results? A: Individual student results will be sent home once we receive them from ACER in May. Q: Is there any cost to parents? A: No - all costs are borne by NIS. Q: What if my child is absent during one of the testing days? A: ISA testing takes place only on these days and cannot be rescheduled. There is no penalty for students who are absent. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Kasson Bratton [email protected]
