THE premises that for 22 years housed a GP clinic that took pressure off Fremantle Hospital’s emergency department sits empty now.

And the WA health department isn’t saying if—let alone when—it will be replaced. This is despite WA health minister Kim Hames telling Parliament in March the clinic looked after “patients who would otherwise take up a lot of time” in the hospital’s already-stretched emergency.

Fremantle Hospital General Practice closed the doors September 28 following a protracted battle with bureaucrats and a tender process that GP Trenna Turner says has left her close to bankruptcy.

The department rejected Dr Turner’s expression-of-interest to keep running the service but, concedes department media bugle Claire Harris, it hasn’t awarded the contract to anyone else either.

BunglingDr Turner accuses the

department of bungling the EOI process and even of tampering with her application.

In a September 20 letter to WA health minister Kim Hames she says, “there were gross irregularities in the conduct of the tender process”.

“Ten important reports forming part of HGP’s EOI submission were secretly torn from all fi ve copies of the bound document, before it was assessed by the review panel.”

Dr Turner’s husband Doug Bridge, who’d also consulted at the clinic, said they discovered the

documents’ removal when they attended a debrief about the EOI with department staff ers.

He asked if there was a copy of their application handy and was livid when he was handed one with an appendix removed. It had included letters of support from mayor Brad Pettitt, MP Adele Carles, clinical director of the Fremantle Mental Health Service Stephen Addis, UWA school of medicine, dentistry and health sciences dean Professor Ian Puddey, St John of God Health Care chief executive Michael

Stanford and former MP and health minister Jim McGinty.

Dr Turner is seeking an ex-gratia payment of $220,000, which includes $91,000 to cover the clinic’s debts, which had spiralled while the department delayed the EOI process.

Dr Bridge told the Herald that after the EOI was rejected, hospital executive director David Blythe asked the couple to keep the clinic open on a short-term basis.

He believes this was because there were no other interested parties.

Medicare Local also submitted an EOI but Mr McGinty, who is a board member, says that was only a safety net: He’d insisted it only be considered if Dr Turner’s clinic didn’t submit an application.

But Dr Bridge, says Dr Blythe made it clear the clinic would have to give up consulting rooms for other hospital departments, submit to stricter auditing and operate without any fi nancial assistance from DoH. The couple believe they have saved Fremantle Hospital $10m over 20 years by taking tricky patients that would

otherwise clog up the emergency department.

Dr Blythe, who hosted a farewell party for the clinic on Tuesday, told the Herald there was no contractual arrangement between the hospital and the clinic.

In a letter to Dr Turner on August 27, Dr Blythe touches on one of the issues driving the discontent at the hospital: a turf war between the clinic and Medicare Local.

“...A Block is also occupied by [Medicare Local] and FHHS would only be prepared to consider an arrangement with HGP if a co-operative, working arrangement with a clear focus on patient care can be established, documented and maintained by both parties,” he wrote.

Dr Bridge told the Herald that two years ago Medicare Local lobbied successfully to take over one of the clinic’s consultation rooms and subsequently turned it into a storeroom that was barely used.

Dr Turner says she was eff ectively bullied by bureaucrats into closing her practice, which had specialised in treating Fremantle’s poorest and most marginalised citizens, including pensioners, the homeless and people with mental illness.

During one meeting, offi cials arrived with two lawyers from the Crown Solicitor’s offi ce.

RACEHORSES break the morning surf after a jittery night at their Daly Street stables in South Fremantle.

It’s 6am, the start of a 34C day, and the riders take the racers through a ritual that has taken place at South Beach since the early 1830s.

Exercise. Racing. Training. And all on a heritage-listed stretch of sand from South Beach groyne to CY O’Connor Beach.

Regarded as sacred by local horse whisperers, the beach witnessed the state’s fi rst horse race held here this week in 1833 when seven imported Timor ponies raced around a half-mile course for a purse of fi ve sovereigns.

Supervising today’s training run is Keith Frost, who has been coming here most mornings for

• From page 1“When I asked a question

about the future of the clinic, one of them stood up and said ‘that’s it, no more questions, the meeting is over’,” she said.

“They were so aggressive.“They started to intimidate

me, to the point where one of their secretaries apologised for their behaviour.

“They were so rude—it was appalling behaviour.”

Dr Turner says the department told her not to speak to the media about their battle, because it “wanted a feel-good story”.

She decided to break her silence after it refused her claim for $60,000 in back pay.

In February the South Metropolitan Health Service

chief executive Nicole Feely wrote to Dr Turner off ering to pay the clinic $24,000 over eight weeks as a “special arrangement” because she was of the impression it was about to close.

But Ms Feeley’s conditions included a demand that they not make any claims or take any legal action against a swag of government departments or the minister for health.

Dr Bridge says their lawyer advised them to tear up the agreement.

Dr Turner is devastated about leaving the city centre and shifting her services to East Fremantle.

“I am happy I was able to give the service to Fremantle people for so long and see

signifi cant changes in people’s health and situation,” she says.

“To be able to give dental work to a chronic schizophrenic with no teeth and see them smile for the fi rst time was so rewarding.”

WA health shadow Roger Cook says it’s clear the Barnett government wanted Dr Turner out.

“Clearly, the whole EOI was fl awed,” he says.

“What is more important is now Fremantle doesn’t have an aff ordable GP clinic because the government has allowed it to vanish.”

The department sent the Herald a short response pointing out there were other locations in the area the clinic’s patients could turn to.

Clinic claims sabotage

more than 40 years, teaching both horse and human.

“This is something that has been going on for a long time and it’s good to preserve it,” he says during the early morning training run on October 1.

Looking for talent to tune up the thoroughbreds today, he’s enlisted the help and skills of PhD graduates Roberta Fornarelli, her husband Mauro Radaelli and Sarah Laborde.

The gallopers went ballistic along the beach, enjoying a dance and dip in the ocean and a lightning bolt down the calm beach soon to be populated by pet dogs.

Roberta was almost impaled on the wreckage of the Wyola when it spooked her horse early this year, her leg wounds still healing after a fall that forced Cockburn council to remove the rusty ribs.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained

horse received deep cuts to its legs and thigh and Roberta went to hospital with cuts and bruises.

“It gets harder every year,” Mr Frost says, referring to a “road rage” incident with a skateboard rider who ran into the back of one of the horses.

“There’s not much room left,” he sighs.

Daly Street stable owner Terry Patterson says South Beach has been a valuable training ground for WA riders, with many apprentices fi nding jobs where horses mean something.

He expects the path between Cockburn Road and South Beach and part of the old South Fremantle landfi ll site where horses are currently trained to be listed permanently on the state heritage register.

BUSINESSES based at Jandakot Airport are fuming over plans to make them, their staff and their customers pay for parking, or risk having wheels clamped.

The Herald understands Jandakot Airport Holdings plans to charge $2 an hour, capped at $5 per day.

Royal Aero Club WA general manger David Currie says the fi rst he knew of the plan was when he saw Wilson Parking installing meters.

“A bit of consultation would have been nice,” he told the Herald.

No public transport“The staff are unhappy, because there

is no public transport out here.“We provide training for more than 30

students, plus a number of organisations like the Old Flyers Group and Leeming Lions Club come here.

“Now they are going to have a parking

impost imposed on them, so undoubtedly it’s going to have an impact on our business.”

Jandakot Chamber of Commerce president Michael Braybrook says it’s a fi rst for Australia, as far as he knows.

“I checked all other aviation airports around Australia and not one of them charges for parking,” he told the Herald.

“You don’t pay for parking at a shopping centre.

“The airport is building its fancy factories and warehouses, where they ripped out the bush, and I bet there will be no paid parking there.”

Mr Braybrook held a tense emergency with traders on September 29.

“Young fl ight instructors could be charged around $1500 a year for parking,” he said. “That is horrendous.”

BP refueller John Tatham who works 12-hour shifts at the airport, says paying to park at work was “bullshit”.

“It was just hearsay at fi rst, then I saw the meters wrapped in plastic.

“I could end up paying an extra $30 a week, which is like taking a pay cut.”

THE Barnet t minor i ty Libera l government has been accused of playing politics with public funds.

Last week Alfred Cove Liberal candidate Dean Nalder issued a press release welcoming a $2.5m commitment to speed signs at 61 schools, including Applecross primary and Santa Maria college.

He was photographed in the Melville Times alongside an article about the funding.

Independent Alfred Cove MP Janet Woollard says the fi rst she knew about the funding—despite having lobbied for it—was when she picked up the paper.

Long-standing protocols mean she should have been informed by WA transport minister Troy Buswell of government funding for her electorate.

She says it’s an open and shut case of the Liberals putting party politics ahead of good governance.

“This is a petty attempt by the Liberal party to help their candidate,” Dr Woollard told the Herald.

“I wrote to the minister in March this year and told him about the problems, particularly at Applecross and Santa Maria.”

Mr Nalder says he’d learned of the funding during a conversation.

“I have ongoing discussions with the government, ministers and their staff about local issues in the electorate of Alfred Cove,” he told the Herald. “During a more recent conversation I was informed that this year, due to the government’s decision to spend 100 per cent of red light and seed camera revenue into road safety initiatives, double the number of schools would be treated in the 2012/13 program.”

At the time of going to press, Mr Buswell’s offi ce had told Dr Woollard her letter is in the post.

Fees take off• Michael Braybrook isn’t happy about parking fees at Jandakot Airport.

herald lettersWe’re on songDESPITE last week’s front page headline in this paper I’d like to assure your readers the elected council and the city’s staff remain united and focused in our eff orts to tune up Fremantle.

The sensationalism and negativity that kicked off the front page article—namely that “Council staff cop mayoral heat” and “cracks are appearing at Fremantle city council”—didn’t paint an accurate picture of the current situation.

Expanding on last week’s analogy of the council as an orchestra, the key role of the mayor and councillors is to work with the community to compose the kind of music that will enhance Fremantle as a great place to live, play and work.

This has been happening in an environment whereby we all agree the same old tunes of the past few decades are not enough to sustain Fremantle into the future—hence we have composed some ambitious new music for the orchestra (the staff ) to play.

There are too many excellent, new compositions to mention but the sounds of a newly upgraded visitor centre, funkier festivals, a family-friendly King Square, WA’s fi rst BID, WA’s fi rst small dwellings scheme amendment, upgrades to streetscapes, improvements to parking, etc are all ringing out across the city.

Many of these new compositions have won awards and it is widely acknowledged across the state the music coming out of Fremantle has radically improved.

Widely acknowledged by everyone that is, except the grumpy music critic (the Herald) who seems focused on, instead of listening to the symphony as a whole, the occasional out-of-tune note.

Of course, in a large orchestra of around 450 musicians and 13 composers, the occasional discordant note is played. I’m the fi rst to accept we sometimes get things wrong. This doesn’t mean most of the musicians are not doing their best. It also doesn’t mean the composers won’t keep pushing the conductors to bring the best out of the orchestra.

I have no doubt the current Fremantle city council is more in tune now than it has been for decades, but keep your ear to ground as the crescendo is yet to come.

I love Freo and NDUAT fi rst I just let out a loud yawn when reading Robert Vallis’ comments about Notre Dame being “like a cancer” (Herald letters, September 29, 2012).

But then his whinging got too much for me to bear and I had to reply to the narrow-minded, misinformed opinion and let readers know there are fi erce supporters of Notre Dame, and—guess what—we also love Fremantle!

When faced with these haters (or even just sceptics), I often ask what they think would be happening in the West End if it weren’t for the Notre Dame students and staff ?

Do you believe, Mr Vallis, that each building would be utilised, lovingly maintained and appreciated each and every day by thousands?

You say you’ve worked in a university and imply some sort of authority on where their motives lay.

Yes Notre Dame is a business but what you’ve obviously not had the privilege of experiencing is this institution’s heart.

As a graduate of Notre Dame and a student of other universities in WA, I can tell you something diff erent is at work there, something unique, something the institution strives to maintain on all levels and I’m proud a place like that calls Fremantle home.

And as for your opinion of the Cliff Street building…Well, perhaps you just haven’t got any taste.

This meant Melville city council residents south of Leach Highway were kept out of the loop regarding this lack of transparency.

ROAD safety auditor Ian Edwards spends his day working out how to save the lives of motorists in WA.

At night, he is tortured by the horrible feeling he did not do enough to help his son Anthony—whom he describes as his best mate—who took his own life in March.

Speaking for the fi rst time since the loss, the father of fi ve relives what he describes as his family’s harrowing journey through a mental health system gone mad.

“You have to be accountable,” he says, his youngest daughter sitting under the patio nursing seven stitches she received after a candle holder fell on her foot.

The girl suff ers depression and attends a private clinic because she refuses to go near the Alma Street psychiatric clinic.

That’s why Mr Edwards is home during his lunch break, delivering a set of crutches he’d picked up for her from Fremantle hospital.

“He was my best mate and that’s all I’ve got of him,” he says, gesturing to Anthony’s urn draped in a St Christopher necklace. The coroner is still investigating.

Superstar golferMr Edwards says Anthony

did all the things young children do. He was bright and became “a superstar golfer” at the age of 14. With a handicap of three, he’d played pennant golf with Royal Fremantle and Royal Perth golf clubs and was one of the state’s top juniors.

“He had the whole world in front of him.”

One day Anthony came home, upset after a teacher called him fat in front of his peers. Anthony left the school despite assurances it would not happen again.

“Because he was passionate about golf we got permission from the government for him to leave school before he turned 15,” Mr Edwards says. “He used to play at Royal Freo seven days a week.

“He was clever but he wasn’t a scholar.”

Mr Edwards cannot continue, staring at images of his son on his phone.

“Six months after the event and I still can’t talk about it.”

Mr Edwards says symptoms of Anthony’s undiagnosed schizophrenia kicked in at

15, when he started smoking cannabis.

“We didn’t know what it was, we thought it was the drugs. People used to say, ‘kick him out, tough love’. People judge people with a mental illness.”

Mr Edwards approached the Herald on September 27 at a two-hour meeting, Tracking the Tragedy, organised by former mental health council of Australia chair Keith Wilson.

“It’s like road safety, we’re targeting towards zero, we’re trying to get no deaths on the roads,” Mr Edwards says.

“Like [Geoff ] Diver says, they can’t label people with mental health and expect some to die. You can’t do that, you drive a motor car, so you’re expected to die?

Who is accountable?“Our agenda is no deaths.

Every time we do a project, we audit it and the designer is accountable. Who is accountable at health?”

Mr Edwards says in the year leading up to his son’s death, Anthony bought masking tape and a length of hose.

“We found them in the boot of the car when he came back,” he recalls.

“We went to Alma Street and said my son is trying to get my

car, bought this and that, and we think he is in danger. We think he needs to come in.”

Alma Street sent its emergency response team and admitted Anthony: “They interviewed him and Anthony said, words to the eff ect, ‘I’m making a rocket ship. I’m making a rocket to experiment with. They said, ‘ok, no worries. We can’t hold you’.”

That was Friday. On Saturday, Anthony jumped his dad with a knife while he’d watched footy, demanding he hand over the car keys. He also took his father’s mobile phone and bolted.

Mr Edwards’ phone was tracked to Kwinana, the car eventually discovered in Hope Valley.

“The cops broke the window, Anthony was gassing himself.” As a teen, Anthony held up a motorist with a fi shing rod. He had stolen a car belong to a friend of an uncle and was driving to Bunbury hospital when it ran out of fuel.

“He was delusional, he thought his stomach was going to explode,” Mr Edwards says. “You can imagine what the motorist thought, ‘no way, you’re crazy’.

Anthony removed the keys, ordering the motorist out of the car or he’d whack him.

A HERALD PROMOTIONAL FEATUREWHAT’S NEW

EIGHT years ago Rapid Autobody Centre introduced the concept of rapid car repairs to WA.

Over the years Rapid Autobody Centre has expanded its services and now off ers a diversifi ed range of repairs and paintwork to pretty much anything made of metal, plastic, fi breglass or wood, including small boats, dinghies, motorbikes, horse fl oats, house doors and gates and of course car restoration at any stage.

“One customer brought in an art deco lamp they’d bought in Paris, had shipped to Singapore and stripped and imported to WA in pieces,” owner Dean Picot smiles. “We gave it a beautiful paint job.”

Dean puts his Booragoon panel shop’s success down to some pretty simple concepts: Fast, quality service at a realistic price.

Fast repairs, quality and friendly service at a great price.

“If someone asks for a quote, even if it’s not an insurance job, we’re happy to do it, even it’s just a kid who wants to spend $150 to respray his bike.

“Th at’s a big point of diff erence these days - a lot of shops won’t deal with people off the street.”

Rapid Autobody Centre saves customers who need minor repairs big money by bypassing insurance excess fees and the loss of no-claim bonuses.

“We work to people’s budget,” Dean says. “If someone wants a quick repair done to a car that’s just a workhorse, that’s what we’ll do. If someone wants meticulous attention paid to a restoration, that’s what we quote for.

“Our aim is to make sure every customer drives away satisfi ed they’ve paid a fair price for great work.”

Th e secret behind Rapid Autobody Centre’s super-fast service is state-of-the-art equipment

Panel Beating

Spray Painting

Paintless Dent Removal

Fibreglass & Plastic Repairs

Private Workwhich includes infrared technology that can dry paint within 10 minutes of application.

Traditional methods take up to an hour but infrared and UV primer technology, combined with fast-dry paint, is ideal for small jobs.

Rapid Autobody Centre can also make fast work of dents and break-in damage without the use of fi llers, using the specialised technique of Paintless Dent Removal.

Dean sees big change on the horizon for autobody repair. He predicts insurance conglomerates will end up herding customers to just one or two preferred shops, some of which the insurance companies might themselves own.

“But I think they’ll always be a place for panelshops that off er great service at a fair price,” he says. “I’m pleased I never put all my business eggs in the insurance company basket and that I’ve always focused more on one-to-one relationships.”

THE Southern Metropolitan Regional Council recycling plant didn’t install acoustic lagging to cut noise by a September 21 deadline and locals aren’t happy.

Fans installed to cut smell have resulted in sleepless nights for locals kept awake by around the clock whirring.

Canning city council tested noise from Sellen Court resident Ben Palmer’s property and stated noise is 18.5 dB above what’s allowed after 10pm, and notes “our opinion is that the noise is likely coming from fans at the waste composting facility”.

The WA environment and conservation department was going to level enforcement action at the SMRC if noise-dampening acoustic lagging wasn’t installed by September 21 but that deadline’s sailed past.

Tim Youé, acting CEO of the SMRC, says the organisation’s had trouble fi nding parts and noise dampening measures will be in place by November 1.

“Why am I not surprised?” resident Lorna Hoogland scoff s.

“The noise remains excessive on the two or three clear nights we have had.”

Mr Youé says the SMRC has reduced fan speed in the late evening and early morning as an interim measure and is trying to get the lagging in as soon as possible.

COCKBURN city council has shelved plans for a $5 million bowls club in Yangebup but says it has nothing to do with the $82 million it hopes to spend on a new Dockers HQ.

Construction on the Visko Park bowling club was meant to start next year, with the Cockburn club relocating there in 2015.

But this week no-one at the council—including mayor Logan Howlett—could tell the Herald when work would start.

“I don’t have a defi nitive time,” he said.

Cockburn Bowling Club president Pat McBride—who’d not been told the project has been mothballed—says members will be “pissed off ”.

“There is a lot of people in Yangebup who want to know when is it going to get bloody started,” he said.

“And I know a dozen or so council staff are waiting for it to come over to Visko Park.”

Mr McBride says the mayor was at the club two weeks ago and said he was looking forward to turning the fi rst sod next year.

But Mr Howlett says he can’t recall saying it.

Cockburn Labor MP Fran Logan says said the council had breached community trust by pushing back the club indefi nitely.

“This is a critical piece of infrastructure for the people of Yangebup,” he said.

“The council have done this to pay for their mega project at Cockburn Central.

“This is more about ego and legacy, then it is about community.”

Community services manager Rob Avard says the deferral of expansion plans for the council’s administration precinct means there’s no urgency to move the Cockburn club, which currently sits next to the council HQ.

“The council spent $100,000 in 2011/12 to upgrade equipment in the current bowling club to ensure they could stay on at their present location for the time being,” he said.

SEVEN police and three paddywagons escorted tree loppers to drastically prune a 150-year-old tuart in Hamilton Hill last week.Furious protestors maintaining a three-month vigil around the Healy Road tree say they were taken unawares, with their “main tree sitter” at the loo when the chainsaw let rip.

“Developer Benny Roncio arrived with tree loppers and police to cut down a further third of the tuart,” group leader Amanda Joy said.

“By the time the community got there the lopper had cut off fi ve branches and now the tree looks terrible.

Devastating“It’s absolutely devastating.”Ms Joy says the group had been

negotiating a 15-metre exclusion zone with BP, the site’s owner, and Mr Roncio, who is developing a neighbouring property aff ected by the roots and canopy.

A petition asking that the tree be fully preserved had collected 1000 signatures. Loppers had fi rst taken to it in July, which had prompted the vigil.

Ms Joy says Mr Roncio’s block of fl ats will be two metres away from the tuart.

“This has been a massive, overwhelming community initiative, which took 10 minutes to desecrate,” she lamented.

BP bugle Peter Metcalfe believes the lopping won’t hurt the tree.

COCKBURN deputy mayor Kevin Allen is having another go at getting a shark mesh installed at Coogee Beach after the Barnett minority Liberal government said it might help foot the bill.

His request earlier this year that the council erect a shark net at the popular beach was knocked on the head: Cr Allen was told the net would cost $150,000 and that no-one had been attacked at Coogee since records started being kept in the 1860s.

The government said last week it would spend $150,000 on an enclosure trial next summer at a yet unnamed beach and Cr Allen is keen for Coogee.

considered. It is slap-bang in the middle of the premier’s electorate.

“The area adjacent to Cockburn’s Coogee beach has been the subject of a number of Great White sightings in the past six months,” Cr Allen said.

Cr Allen plans to present a notice of motion at the October 11 council meeting, asking for Coogee consideration.

WA fi sheries minister Norman Moore says the WA government will fork out $50,000 this year to research costing, designs, engineering and locations.

A report on “shark hazard mitigation” from Bond University in Queensland, “supported shark enclosures for WA beaches” but not nets, “due to the concerns about indiscriminate bycatch”.

“Such enclosures will provide the same comfort to swimmers as a beach pool but is likely to be more cost-eff ective to build and maintain,” Mr Moore said.

HER words trembling, the distraught mother says her severely depressed 28-year-old daughter sleeps all the time, and is suicidal.

“My daughter is at the hopelessness stage. I will live with her for the rest of my life. People say I should think about myself and take time off . My time off is going to work.”

Another mother, whose daughter took her own life six years ago, says she hopes a meeting tonight will change the way governments tackle mental health in WA.

“For the fi rst time in six years since my daughter’s death, I feel hope. I don’t know how it will happen, but you’ve given me hope they can be challenged and people helped.”

The women were amongst 50 people to attend last week’s public forum, Tracking the Tragedy, organised by former Australian mental health council chair Keith Wilson.

• For the full rundown of the meeting, see next week’s Herald.

• From page 5“That was called armed

robbery, which is what he was charged with. He went through the gaol system where psychiatrists wrongly diagnosed him with personality disorder.”

Anthony eventually was admitted to the Franklin centre at Graylands hospital where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He celebrated his 21st birthday inside.

“Eventually he got a lot better and was back home where he stayed self-medicated as an outpatient of Alma Street. His best friends were his family.”

Mr Edwards says it was diffi cult to motivate Anthony: “I tried to understand but I didn’t have a full understanding of mental health issues at that stage.”

He says Anthony befriended a doctor in Palmyra who wrote to Alma Street stating his schizophrenia, and health issues related to his medication and by now heavy drinking, could be brought under control.

Self-motivationAnthony agreed to

cooperate and succeeded in weaning himself off alcohol to prevent further damage to his liver. He still smoked but changes to his medication saw a remarkable turnaround over the Christmas and new year period.

“He got back his self-motivation, he went out and started buying himself clothes, he started brushing his teeth properly, he groomed himself.

“He was going to Rebel sports, bought new shoes, new bathers, he was going to the beach and taking his dog down to the river for a swim. He said he felt great.

“We had the old Anthony back, no-one could believe the

‘My best mate’

change in him.”Unfortunately, the

symptoms returned by the start of March this year and Anthony was again admitted, reluctantly, to Alma Street.

“He didn’t want to go. He had this

taste of life again and didn’t want

to go back to that place which made it

bad.

“He tried to get out of the car twice when we stopped at the lights. Hannah followed in the car behind me.”

Mr Edwards stayed at the clinic until a sedated Anthony fell asleep and returned to his former drug regime, turning him into “a zombie” over the next few days.

“Patients, because they are stuck in the system, know how to play the game. I think Anthony learnt that.

“He’s trapped, he’s had a taste of what life is, he didn’t want to go back the other way and thinks, ‘I will do what I need to do to get out’.”

Mr Edwards was on his way to work on March 19 when Anthony called to say he had been released and would get his younger sister to pick him up.

Asked why he was discharged, Anthony gave no reason except, “‘They just let me out’.

“I could see he was unwell. He has tricked them.”

The next day, as he passed Anthony on the way to work, Mr Edwards remarked: “‘You’re up early’.”

Anthony replied: “Yep, I’m just going to the shops to get some food for breakfast.”

“And that was the last time I saw him.”

DEAN NALDER’S election signs are being stolen and vandalised at an alarming rate.

The Liberal candidate has erected about 100 on the lawns of Alfred Cove locals who’ve volunteered to help build his profi le ahead of his taking on independent MP Janet Woollard at next year’s state election.

But about a third have either been stolen or smashed.“First off they were just disappearing,” Mr Nalder says,

with the fi rst going missing overnight about three weeks ago. “We kept replacing them, then they started breaking them.”

He says the stakes are solid wood so someone’s gone to some eff ort to snap them off .

“It’s not the wind,” Applecross supporter Kerry Whittington says.

The fi rst couple she had up in her front yard were stolen overnight. Replacements were snapped at the stakes.

Mr Nalder says it’s also a concern that “people are coming onto private property” to vandalise the signs.

He says someone out there has several dozen giant Dean Nalder faces stashed in their bedroom.

Local traders say the scheme’s a dud.Benny’s cafe owner Ivan Dzeba says,

“people did not see the value in it”.“Advertising has to be constructive,”

he says. “People just weren’t keen on it. Businesses wanted to be more creative and do their own thing.”

Council development and marketing manager Andrew Eastick makes no apology for cutting the strip and the harbour—arguably two of the port city’s

biggest drawcards—out of the action.“Businesses in the cappuccino strip

THE Liberal candidate for Willagee now disputes he’d failed to keep kennels in a satisfactory condition—despite his plea of guilty at the time.

Last week the Herald revealed Serpentine/Jarrahdale councillor Sam Piipponen and his wife Jasmine—a staff er for Liberal MLC Nick Goiran—had been fi ned $500 and disqualifi ed for 12 months by the WA racing and wagering department for not keeping greyhound kennels ship-shape (“Young Lib off and racing,” Herald September 22, 2012).

Mr Piipponen had also plead guilty to charges of failing to provide proper care for greyhound pups, but he says a warm heart, not cruelty, led to that breach.

The 30-year-old Liberal hopeful is not returning Herald calls but in a statement funnelled to us by party HQ, he explains he’d separated fi ve pups from a litter of nine because their mother, diagnosed with milk fever, couldn’t keep up with demand.

“We immediately supplemented their feeds with solids but as the pups were still young they were not overly interested in the food although it was always available to them,” Mr Piipponen said in the statement.

“To give the mother a break we rehomed fi ve of the smallest pups at seven weeks.

“Another option may have been to euthanise the pups: It is not an off ence to do so. But we were not going to do that.”

Mr Piipponen now questions a steward’s evidence the greyhounds’ drinking water hadn’t been changed in a week.

“My dogs’ water was in stainless steel bowls and [they] would knock the water over up to three times a day, so there is simply no chance the water could sit for a week.”

“The bore water, while discoloured, I had previously had specially tested for safety of consumption by my horses and

BEFORE jumping aboard the Duyfken four years ago Andrew Bibby didn’t know a stern from a bow.

Some 85,0000 nautical miles later, he’s the replica’s bosun.

Originally from Brisbane the 31-year-old now lives aboard the ship with other volunteers from around the world.

Although life on board can at times be arduous, his passion for the ship is apparent.

“It doesn’t matter who comes on board, it could be people who would never meet on land—everyone who comes here belongs.”

The ship’s signifi cant attachment to Fremantle is not lost on the former Queenslander.

“Without the people of Fremantle, the Duyfken wouldn’t be here.”

Mr Bibby met his fi ancee on board and they now share a bed in the ship’s cargo hold, where the crew bunks.

Although living conditions are basic, they’re clean, spacious and completely authentic. Each crew member is given a small, wooden treasure chest in which

the steward arrived for an unannounced inspection, but says he’d started cleaning them before the steward showed.

Mr Piipponen says there was no suggestion of animal cruelty, and the issue was not referred to the RSPCA.

“I love animals,” he said. “I currently have three dogs, three horses, a sheep, guinea pigs and a cat on my property.

Mr Piipponen says he was bitterly

disappointed by the charges. He’d plead guilty so he could put the matter behind him and get out of greyhounds.

He’s not letting the resurfacing of the matter get in the way of his campaign, saying he’s determined to give Peter Tinley a run for his money in the safe Labor seat.

Premier Colin Barnett refused to say whether he was aware of Mr Piipponen’s history with the RWWA before his endorsement.

THE Terrazza, in Applecross, has been around a while,

standing the test of time while others around the Riseley Road strip come and go.

With its very Italian/Mediterranean facade facing Canning Highway, it was hard to go past when mum and I went out looking for lunch recently.

It helps that it’s next to a frock shop mum is keen to visit.

Fortunately, we ate fi rst to get our strength up, as mum shops till I drop.

A glass of Brown Brothers riesling for her and a chardonnay ($7.50) for myself and we settled in to check out the menu, with an order of very moist garlic bread ($7.90) to soak up the vino.

Don’t be fooled by the facade, nor the Italian name: Terrazza off ers a multicultural choice.

Ever since a trip to Thailand some years ago mum’s been a fan of fried rice, in this case she crossed the Indonesian border and chose a chicken nasi goreng ($24.50).

The generous serve was redolent with the fl avours of Bali with plenty of succulent chicken pieces, all topped with that famous fried egg.

I ordered the fi sh of the day, barramundi ($34.50). The

FOOD JENNY D’ANGERFF J

Mediterranean mainstay

large, crumbed fi llet was tasty and arrived sitting on a bed of deliciously garlicky potatoes and accompanied by a crisp salad, lightly dressed with extra virgin olive oil.

With the heavy work done we kicked back and ordered coff ee ($3.90) and a lemon/lime brulee (($8.90).

A fan of sharp tastes, I reckoned the tart could have been tarter, but mum was happy with

her share. And we couldn’t fault the

wait staff who were cheery and helpfully attentive.

Fortifi ed by an enjoyable meal we headed next door, where, as I predicted, I fl agged long before the seniorest of these two senior citizens.

AT some point in their life every Aussie belts out a line or two from a Don Walker song.

Before you Google his name, he was the unassuming and infl uential

songwriter for Cold Chisel. The band’s keyboardist penned

songs now etched into Australian l o r e : Cheap Wine, Khe Sahn, Choirgirl and Saturday Night to name a few.

Post-Chisel, he has released solo albums and continues to churn out tunes for the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Tex Perkins and a raft of other artists.

The Sydney-based muso says Australian history sculptured and infl uenced his early writing.

“Mostly through the way Australian history has shaped family history, or the history of the communities in which those families evolved,” he says. “My place of birth is due to my father’s war service, and there’s a lot of Queensland in the songs.

“Both my father’s and mother’s families were decimated by both world wars. My family and those communities grew out of immigration, much of it involuntary, which was a palpable part of community lore.

“Everybody’s outlook is shaped by these family histories, which is Australian history, and if you fi nish up writing songs these things are inevitably in the songs.”

The irony is not lost on Walker that thousands will rock up to hear a vodka-swilling Barnes screech out one of his songs, while only a handful of devotees will turn out to hear him sing the same song, which he wrote.

“I’m happy with that,” he candidly tells the Herald.“I never had radio hits, because I started making my

own music late in life, and the music I make may not be a natural fi t for commercial radio, so I’ll always play to small crowds.”

The self-eff acing Walker is in high demand as a wordsmith and isn’t bothered his tunes make other people famous.

“Australia’s a small place, so I usually know anyone who sings something I’ve written,” he says. “Sometimes we’ve written it together.

“I regard how they record it as their business.“My default setting is I’m writing for myself.

Occasionally something comes along that might be suitable for someone else.”

Walker returns to Fremantle for two shows with the Lucky Strikes, featuring Lucky Oceans, Pete Stone, Dave Brewer and Todd Pickett.

The fi ve-piece bluesy, folksy, country outfi t will play a back catalogue of Walker’s song at Clancy’s on October 12 before heading to The Fremantle Arts Centre on October 14 as part of its Sunday courtyard music season.

DOLPHINS leap in a playful moment captured in mosaics

on the bottom of the pool at this Mt Pleasant stunner.

Two walls of huge bifold doors open onto the partially roofed pool, wonderfully melding indoors with outdoors.

Toss in spacious covered patio and a fully kitted out barbecue kitchen and is there any reason to go indoors at all?

The answer would be a resounding “yes!”.

Because from the grand foyer entry, and soaring portico over the front door, this fi ve-bedroom/four-bathroom home is modern luxury at every turn.

Does someone living the lifestyle of the rich and famous cook is another question.

Judging by the stunning kitchen of this home they do (just maybe not as often as thee and me).

White travertine tops two island benches, yes two, and there’s a huge pantry.

And when you need coff ee there’s a Miele coff ee maker fi tted to the wall.

The huge open-plan lounge area has a gas fi re to toast your toes on cold nights, while the dining area opens on to the pool. As does an offi ce, but on the opposite side.

Next to the offi ce is the theatre room.

The massive telly (the screen is bigger than my kitchen) is

staying as part of the fi xtures.Upstairs you’ll fi nd a

spacious sitting room, with a balcony with river views, and the bedrooms, all whoppers, three with ensuite.

The main bedroom is a monster, with its own balcony with river views, walk-in-robe and an open ensuite with a spa, separate shower (and WC) and double vanities.

Modern luxury

Keep climbing and you’ll fi nd the games room, a cavernous space that dwarfs a pool table. Pull back the curtains and there’s river and Perth skyline views. The pool table is staying too.

The gardens of this home, on 493sqm, are neat and low-maintenance, and mere metres from the river foreshore.

With plenty of shopping, cafe and restaurant choices, and close to the freeway (but without the noise) this is a fantastic home.

WARNING: Don’t call any electrican until you read this

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy

house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are

hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive

on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will

only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after

the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end

you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Frustration could easily slip in. The Sun is making its way through Libra, the

land of endless deliberation. The forces of nature are set up so that if you push against the prevailing winds, you’ll fi nd a brick wall. This is an interesting time for building relationships.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)The moment you recognise situations for what they are, forging a path becomes

easy. If you get caught in expectations that aren’t realistic, the path mysteriously becomes tangled and impenetrable. Drop pre-conceived notions and fl ow with what is given.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)Curiosity on its own is not enough. Your curiosity is now being driven

by the rather large motor of desperation for the truth. This will either take you to foreign destinations, in search of the exotic, the distant and the different, or it will take you on a hunt deep inside.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)It’s going to take all your might to stay true to your intuition, when all

and sundry, quoting science, are insisting that you listen to the evidence. Do you trust your pragmatic defence-oriented shell? Or do you trust your soft, sensitive, feeling centre. It’s your call.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)Enjoy community. With the Sun in Libra, life is generally harmonious in

your part of town. Sharing hopes, ideals and wild ideas, is proving to be a highly creative pastime. Keep it light, without letting it get fl uffy. If you sense the need to lock horns, back away.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)Venus is travelling through your sign, which is unnerving the part of you that

likes to keep it together. Venus is altogether too capricious and untamed to be held within any such constraints. This is an interesting time for Virgos. Tap into your vague and dreamy side.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)The Sun is adding power to your determination to get out there and

forge relationships where there are none. Not everyone wants to play on fi rst attempt. It will take all your legendary charm to make music from the noise. By remaining light, curious and playful, you will.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)Saturn has arrived. That means it’s time to either get wise, or get

frustrated – which will help you get wise. Saturn is much maligned but really he just wants us to know our own deepest intelligence, rather than be ruled by what others insist we learn. Be a sage.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Take a deep breath. Some of the pressure is off. There’s a gap here for

dancing lightly and viewing the roses. Mars will be visiting soon. Before he arrives, do cartwheels, tumble down grassy slopes and generally give your inner kid permission to roll and play.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)It’s very much up to you to decide if you want to lock horns with life, with

all the trouble that entails, or fl oat lightly and gently through uncharted waters. This means response-ability. The clues for easiness are nourishment and communication. Take them to heart.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)The planets are set up in such a way that you could be tempted to get a bit jumpy

in relationship. While others are reaching out for harmony and agreement, you simply want decisive action. Endless diplomacy doesn’t suit that end. Be straight with sweet talkers.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)Take it slowly – and do all that you can to be responsive.. This is the

healing way. Be clear. Be strong. Flex your spine. Drifting off now will invite negative reactions. Others need you to hold your position. Crystallise the knowing you have and use it without faltering.
