President’s ReportToodyay’s draft Economic Development Plan, prepared by RPS Environment and Planning Pty Ltd has now been finalised, with amendments

resulting from Council discussions at three recent forums and after final perusal and acceptance by Council will be advertised for submissions from the public and key stakeholders. This Economic Development Plan compliments the Shire of Toodyay’s Community Strategic Plan and will be a key element in Council’s deliberations in future years. Community input into the Draft Plan is vital to ensure that future Council decisions reflect the aspirations and needs of Shire residents and I urge all stakeholders to take the time to consider the Draft Economic Development Plan during the advertised consultation period.

appointed to complete the Toodyay Sport and Recreation Precinct Master Plan presented the draft concept plan to a community meeting at the Toodyay Community Centre during the evening of 17 June, 2014. Unfortunately I was not able to attend but feedback from various attendees indicates that the concept plan was positively received by most of those present with many helpful questions and criticisms. Submissions received as a result of the public consultation period ending 27 June 2014 will also be seriously considered by Council and consulting Architects in order to further improve the final concept plan.

Mid-June I represented the Shire of Toodyay at the National General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra. This three day event was preceded by a one day Regional Cooperation and Development forum. While I was in Canberra I took the opportunity to meet with several Parliamentary Ministers and Advisors to discuss aged care, road and infrastructure funding and mobile

phone black spots. All issues important and relevant to our Shire. However, the main purpose of my visit was to meet an Advisor to the Minister for Sport and Health, the Hon. Peter Dutton MP, along with the Hon. Christian Porter MP to discuss means of obtaining Federal funding for the Toodyay Sport and Recreation Precinct. This meeting was extremely positive and arrangements are now progressing to facilitate a visit to Toodyay headed by Mr Porter during July. This will complement the scheduled July visit by the Hon. Terry Waldron MLA, WA Minister for Sport, accompanied by Mr Shane Love MLA, Hon Paul Brown MLC and Hon Martin Aldridge MLC. This meeting will be a precursor to applying for funding at a State level.

On Saturday morning (21 June), I had the pleasure of welcoming the Gyuto Monks of Tibet to our town. Their week of workshops culminating in a 2 hour chanting performance titled “Timeless Voices” will surely be long remembered by those who attend these events.

The Crime and Punishment theme has returned with a new interpretation of the courtroom scene . All our recently restored pieces , the witness stand, 1870s table and our 19th century bush ladder are on display here, along with photos of the restoration process.

Our textile exhibition has also changed. Our mannequin is now pregnant reflecting the condition many colonial women found themselves in throughout their childbearing years. Families were much bigger and a woman could expect to be caring for a new baby every 2-3 years until her early 40’s.

Environment MattersLiving Smart Facilitator Training

Toodyay have been privileged to host the upcoming Living Smart Facilitator Training run by Shani Graham from Ecoburbia. Living Smart is a course that provides participants with tools to live a more sustainable lifestyle, which mutually benefits the individual and the environment (including saving you money!!). The Facilitator training is an opportunity to not only find out more about the Living Smart program but also gives you a qualification to be able to run the course in future. Toodyay are very fortunate to be offered this training at a heavily subsidised price of $40 (normally $340). who have farmed the land since 1901.

Linda’s stimulus to write her first novel “Secrets Mothers Keep” stemmed from discovering an amazing true and somewhat brutal story and turn of events that occurred in her husband’s family. This grizzly story was kept secret from the family only to be uncovered in recent times. “Secrets Mothers Keep” is to be the first in a “Secrets” series of fictionalised stories based on West Australian history.

Call into the Library and register your attendance for this up and coming “Conversations with an Author” event. We promise to share an array of tasty refreshments plus a good portion of interesting and somewhat horrible histories.

Conversations with an AuthorNoreen ReevesToodyay Library staff and members would like to express a big thank you to Noreen Reeves for visiting the Library on Thursday 12 June 2014 to host “Conversations with an Author”. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed listening to Noreen’s tales and sharing a few of their own.

Noreen’s self-published debut book “Two Shakes of a Lambs Tail” depicts the challenge and experiences she and her young family encountered and endured whilst living in remote isolation on Bougainville Island some 1300km from Papua New Guinea. Conversations flowed as freely as the coffee was being poured and the morning concluded with Noreen’s exciting discovery of appearing to be related to some of the founder forefathers of Toodyay town. It truly is a small world!

MY HEALTH and wellbeing – who’s responsible? Quite often we get told to get ourselves off to the doctor and he will deal with our health and/or wellbeing issue? How wrong. The doctor will often give a diagnosis, treatment, options and/or assistance, but it is individuals who ultimately make decisions that drives outcomes. Some American research has been conducted highlighting that our medical system quite often only repairs damage caused by poor lifestyle choices impacting on our health. It points out that:•70% of our health status is about lifestyle;•10% is genetic;•10% is environmental; and •10% is the health system.

Undoubtedly, the major impact is lifestyle choices substantiating the message that “it is our health”. On all three health and wellbeing fronts (physical, mental and social/spiritual) the individual is the driver. Whether it be situational distress, a cancer diagnosis, a diagnosed mental health issue, a social/spiritual wellbeing issue (surrounding our identity, individuality or sense of belonging), the doctor will only provide the framework to follow (from diagnosis to treatment options) but decisions and changes ultimately need to be made by us. All of our life we have to make informed decisions on a variety of issues to do with our family, work and social activities; why then should our health and wellbeing be any different? Blokes in general are decision-makers; that is how we are hardwired. The warrior attitude is an admirable attribute especially when dealing with sporting and business challenges. However, this same attitude can cause us to neglect/postpone important aspects and not correctly prioritise decisions around our health and wellbeing. Some familiar comments we often hear from blokes when discussing health and wellbeing issues are:

Living Smart Coming to Toodyay

LIVING smart – that’s the challenge about to be thrown out to Toodyay residenace. The not-for-profit organisation Living Smart wants householders to think how they use resources – especially power and water – andtofindwaystocutwaste. Living Smart will be host a training course on July 26 and 27 and August 2. Trainer Shani Graham from Ecoburbia together with the Shire of Toodyay, is putting a call out to people with passion for sustainability, environment and education to join the upcoming training workshops. The facilitator training helps skill local people to deliver a ‘Living Smart’ course which covers 10 topics usually run over

seven weeks involving presentations, hands onworkshops,discussionsandfieldtrips. Topics range from the traditional power, water and transport modules to gardening for food production, waste, biodiversity, a healthy home and simply living. A key focus of the course is to help people make changes in their homes. The Living Smart program has been successfully rolled out to thousands of participants in Perth and around regional Western Australia. . “This training is the perfect opportunity for people to gain the skills needed to introduce a Living Smart course into their community, but in reality anyone interested in facilitating behaviour change will gain something from the course,” Shani says.

Lotterywest has sponsored the training which is being offered to Toodyay regional participants at a reduced cost of $40 for the three days. “Living Smart has been very successful in the Perth area and other regional centres,” says Shani. “We are very excited to receive this support to be able to offer this training in Toodyay and the Wheat belt region. “I really hope people will take advantage of the opportunity. “Anyone can come – from community members, to government employees, schools teachers,orthoseworkinginnot-for-profitagencies.” EnvironmentalOfficerKarlaHoopersays,“We’re delighted to host this facilitator

‘Down like a bucket of bolts’The Scribbler’s Sidekick

THERE are many times in our lives when we wonder why we are here. That is a question that all of us ponder from time to time. However, through thick and thin, the members of the Toodyay Men’s Shed share their own personal stories, their horrors and their beliefs about what life should be. For this we applaud them, and wish for them all that is so critically important for their well being. Each and every one of our members has a story to tell, and would you believe there are so many of us who want to listen, and believe and share what they have been through. Membership Guess what? Our membership is secure and comfortable, but above all truthful in their beliefs. How can anyone take away the adventures that these guys of many ages want to achieve in the years ahead? Let us praise their thinking of sharing with others in creating new and exciting projects. The Boss is ailing at this stage. In fact he is pretty poorly. Both Fred and Gail took an

extended tour of the Danube and Rhine rivers in Europe, but lo and behold, Fred became a little unwell. At a very early stage in the tour and after many wonderful delights of food, drinks and amazing sights, his health came good. Upon disembarking from the trip, he took on another little virus as one would say, and succumbed to feeling ill again. Never mind, home again, but he went down ‘like a bucket of bolts’ and then became even more ill to the extent that he was hospitalised in Northam Hospital. His beloved Lady, the love of his life, also succumbed to the dreaded lurgy. With her tenacity she pulled through and is inviting people to visit Fred to make him feel whole again. Fred warns that he has no intention of leaving Aussie Soil any time soon.Restorations The Men’s Shed recently noticed a nice table in sad condition at the CWA. A member whisked it away to the Shed where, it was restored to its former glory and returned. We trust it will serve in the CWA hall for many a long year to come. The end of month Breakfast, was held at Phil’s place on July 28. DEPRESSION has become a major concern in the community with recent studies showing that one in seven Australians will suffer depression at some time in their lives. That, in turn, affects many others as their families and friends watch them suffer and do what they can to help. Because of this, we are holding a meeting for women on Saturday July 26. Dr Ben will be addressing us on the topic ‘The Blues and You – Women and Depression’. He will present the clinical aspects of depression in women, and also a holistic model. His wife, who has suffered greatly with depression, will share her journey through this illness. All interested women are invited to attend this meeting at the Toodyay Baptist Church ( Factory Church) on Saturday July 26, from 1.30-4.30pm. Afternoon tea will be served. MUKINBUDIN Shire has a remarkablecollection of stunningly beautiful rock formations that members and friends of the Nat’s Club were able to enjoy over the June long weekend. With interes t ing names such as Beringbooding Rock, Yanneymooning Hill and Elachbutting Rock the group was eager to explore. Beringbooding Rock has a water catchment wall built in the late 1930s by ‘Sustenance Labour’ during the Great Depression. It is the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere with a holding capacity of 2.25 million litres. Elachbutting Rock has magnificent ‘wave’ formations that are a photographer’s delight. Yanneymooning Hill has gullies of soil on the rock face in which grow the beautiful weeping form of eucalypt, Silver Princess.

Frogs could be heard in the damp undergrowth. Large rock pools held varieties of macro invertebrates and many tadpoles. Several little dragons hid beneath rock formations and there was evidence of frequent wallaby visits over the rocky surface. The photo of Elachbutting Rock is courtesy of Norma and Gloria Green. Darling Range Branch of the WA Naturalists’ Club had a 40th year celebration on Saturday 14 June at which there was the Toodyay Naturalists’ Club representation. Shapelle McNee, Helena Aurora Range Advocates chairperson and a founder member of the group, and Brian Moyle, also a founding member, guest speakers at the June meeting, spoke on the work of protecting this valuable natural asset within the Great

Western Woodlands from mining. The Range, which includes banded ironstone, is under a persistent threat of mining although it was originally proposed for protection in 1979-1980 following a biological study by the WA Museum and State environmental bodies. A proposal of the Helena Aurora Range as a Class ‘A’ National Park was put forth on 15 of October 2013. I’VE HAD a wonderful start to my week bycountinguptheprofitsfromlastmonth’s‘FUNd-raising’ sausage sizzle in Stirling Terrace. A humongous ‘thank you’ to Marlene Andrijich and Annette La Bourchardiere for making it such a successful day, and to everyone else who helped. A special thanks to Peter Robinson and Roz Davidson – you are both such an asset to our community and an inspiration to all. We had great feedback with comments of “the most delicious sausage sizzle I’ve ever had” and “do you have any of that amazing sauce for sale”. Roz Davidson’s recipe is at the bottom of this column. Simon Harrington had a great suggestion for making soups and stews to cater for vegetarians and people with gluten intolerances. Stay tuned for that one. The next Toodyay Farmers Market meeting will be at 7pm on Thursday July 10 at the Toodyay Community Centre. WHAT a beautiful day we had for our Garden Club bus trip to Whiteman Park in June. Our bus arrived in the park at 10am, with blue skies and perfect temperatures, and we met with more of our club members who had made their own way. After a short address by our president, Heather, we were free to spend a leisurely two hours wandering the park and perusing the various attractions. We all met at noon for a sociable picnic lunch, after which a departure time of 2pm was agreed upon, and once more we dispersed to catch up on anything we’d missed previously. The Motor Museum and Revolutions Transport Museum was very popular, as were the Village shops promoting their Handicrafts, Pottery and Art.

Of course the day would not have been complete without the train ride as the Bennett Brook Railway operates steam and diesel trains over six kilometres of 610mm gauge track through Whiteman Park’s Banksia woodlands. After departure at 2 o’clock our bus driver Reg treated us to a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ through suburbs old and new. Who’s ever heard of the suburb of Brabham? Then along West Swan Road past the wineries before heading for the hills and arriving back in Toodyay at 3.15pm. All agreed it was a very enjoyable day. On July 3 we have a Garden Club outing to York by bus. Our August Garden Club visit is to Northam on Thursday August 7. Tomato Sauce recipeINGREDIENTS:•4 large onions•250g celery•5 tablespoons olive oil•4 garlic cloves•1 tablespoon ground coriander•1 cinnamon stick•1 teaspoon allspice•½ teaspoon ground black pepper•2kg ripe tomatoes •3 tablespoons tomatoes puree•200ml apple cider vinegar•200g sugar (golden syrup).

METHOD: Blend onion and celery and cook in olive oilforfiveminutes. Add blended garlic and cook for another fiveminutesandthenaddallthespicesandcook for a further one minute. Stir in chopped tomatoes and all other ingredients except golden syrup. Bring to boil and simmer, stirring so sauce doesn’t stick to base of pan. Let sauce simmer until reduced at least by several centimetres, then add golden syrup. Blend sauce with a stick blender and sieve into a bowl. Return sauce to stove, boil and stir until further reduced. Your sauce is now ready to bottle.

This is a short report of club activities, having been away for a couple of weeks. Two weeks back, I was in Fremantle helping out a friend in need. On the way home my car broke down. Of all places to brake down on the Roe Highway.Thetrafficwasveryheavy. Thank God for the RAC who came and helped me get my van to the repairers, and two weeks later, I am back in Toodyay getting my life together. In June we had a wonderful time with a visit from the York Seniors Club, which we will be returning a visit to them later in the yesr. In July we hope to visit the Middle Swam wineries, chocolate outlets and other places of interest around. Birthdays this month, I am guessing that it is Laurie’s birthday. We had three prize-winners who were thrilled at the chance of hitting a jackpot. It was a great event and we certainly appreciate the addition of those extra funds for the work we do. This month we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary, and commemorating our wonderful River Friend, Gaven Donegan, with the unveiling of a memorial plaque at Millards Pool.

This will take place on Sunday July 20 and members of the Donegan family have been invited. We will have our usual busy-bee in the morning, meeting at 9am at Millards Pool unless otherwise advised, followed by the unveiling and lunch at the picnic shelter (weather permitting) or a member’s home nearby. Lunch will be catered for, but please bring your own chair, tea and coffee. There will be a general meeting after lunch with birthday celebrations continuing into the afternoon. IT APPEARS that the unwanted attention of mindless idiots are not the only hazards for Mini Rail members. Now, the elements are working against us too. One of our consistently hard-working members, Vern Witney, was walking along the track when he heard a loud ‘crack’. Though hampered by his severe arthritis, Vern put on what pace he was able to as a tree fell across the track just three metres behind him. Pat has tried to convince Vern to take his mobile phone with him – in his pocket, not just left in the car – when he disappears down the railway for hours on end. So far, Vern has not been convinced of the need, but we hope this close shave will alter your views, Vern. Stan and Vern have since sawn up the offending tree. We are so glad this did not occur on a run day. Peter Dymond has been hard at work completing drawings for Shandy’s proposed new boiler. Nowwehavetotryandfindsomefirmthatwill construct same for under the price of a new Machi jet. Itseemsthatsmalljobsarenottheflavourof the month. Vern, in his attempts to have a new diesel built,canwellbearoutthisfactwithfirmsin the local areas unwilling to take on this project. Some of Vern’s clever friends from the Tracmac Association have now come to his rescue so we now have hopes for a future, much-needed addition. The AGM will be held on Monday 21 July at 8pm. Venue is the CWA Hall, Toodyay.

PERCY, a six-month-old feline friend from Denmark, recently visited York with his owners Eliza and Morgan. A day into the holiday Percy started vomiting, became very lethargic and refused to eat (which his owners said is very unusual for him). He was treated at the York clinic late that night. Xrays thefollowingmorningconfirmedthat Percy had a severe blockage in his intestines. After stabilising our beautiful patient, he was taken to surgery and a 30cm piece of wool was removed from his small intestine. This wool had become caught in several places along his intestines, which had caused them to bunch up, creating a blockage. If we had waited any longer, Percy may not be with us today. Thanks to his extremely dedicated parents and the Heartlands team, we were able to remove the wool and nurse him back to full health. Percy is now at home in Denmark, enjoying life and creating havoc. Young cats who play with thread, wool or string often attempt to eat it, and this can have catastrophic effects. For this reason it’s extremely important to not allow your cats uncontrolled access to wool or string.

Community Bank Clean-Up

THANKyoutothe25peoplewhobravedthe cold and the fog on Sunday June 15 to come along and clean up the Toodyay/Northam Road. It was a huge effort, completing a clean-up of 7.2km from the Information Bay on the corner of the Toodyay and Northam roads right the way through to the Toodyay Shire boundary sign. The sun came out to provide us with beautiful weather as well as great company to share it with. Those collecting raised $5 per bag of rubbish sponsored by the local Toodyay & Districts Community Bank. The total bags collected was as follows:

FOLLOWING the beautiful rains enjoyed to date the frog population is also voicing its appreciation; however, not all frogs call all the time. With such a range of species how does one identify what they might have in the garden, creek, dam, nearby river or their frog pond? Firstly, Australia does not have any species of endemic toads with the only toad found, the introduced Cane Toad. What is heard following the rains are the male frogs calling to attract a mate and to stake a territory claim. Many of the frogs have a common name which is likened to its call such as the Motorbike Frog, the Squelching Frog, and the Bleating Frog, and so on. Frogs lay eggs. With metamorphosis occurring within the egg sac of the Turtle Frog the young break through the surround of the egg as a fully formed frog. Other species of frog eventually transform from a Tadpole into a frog.

Two families of frog found within our Shire are the climbers, which have long legs and padson thefingersand toes toassistwithclimbing, and the ground burrowing species with short, strong, stout legs that are used as shovels. Frogs have large, bulbous eyes with the pupils, during the day, reduced to a vertical or horizontal slit. The tympanum, or eardrum, is placed behind the eye and is another source of informationastotheidentificationofafrogas it may be as large as the eye, smaller or not visible at all. A frog’s skin may be smooth or covered in wart-like bumps but it is essential for it to be moist as the frog can dehydrate very quickly and die. There are several excellent publications available such as ‘Field Guide to Reptiles and Frogs of the Perth Region’ and ‘Frogs of WesternAustralia’toassistwithidentificationof the large group of herpetofauna (the study of reptile and amphibian fauna) of which the frog is part.A member of the Toodyay Naturalists’ Club T 6364 3609.

The upper body colouring is a beautiful soft blue/grey which accentuates the black forehead, face and throat, black flight feathers, a dark grey tail with the outer feathers black tipped with white; the breast is pale grey with white on the underbelly and beneath the tail. The Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike has a distinctivemetalliccalloftenheardasitflies. The long, graceful undulations of flightandthedistinctive‘shufflingoffeather’asit alights are important identifying features. A pair returns to the same area annually to breed. The shallow nest, built by both birds, isconstructedoffinetwigsandgrassesandbound by cobweb and found in the fork of trees near the end of a branch shaded by overhead foliage. The female lays two to three green to olive coloured eggs, which may be faintly blotched with brown or grey, with both sexes brooding andfeedingtheyoungwhichfledgeinabout25 days. Following the breeding the juvenile birds collect and fly tomore northern areas toreturn to the same area the following year. The Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike feeds on large insects such as grasshoppers, caterpillars and beetles pouncing from a vantagepoint.Itwillalsofeedonnativefigsin the semi-arid areas. Tidy Towns isplay on Wednesday July 2 in the Memorial Hall Foyer, from 1pm to 4pm. The next Toodyay Tidy Talk newsletter will contain the invitation and watch out for the Posters around town, too. This is a free event. You can meet the Two Tidy Towns Judges, Jo Gray and Gail Dodd, and view Greg’s powerful PowerPoint presentation, after which the Tidy Towns Committee will whisk the Judges off to see the beautiful sights and tidy sites around Toodyay. Tidy Towns Supporters and the general public are invited and we hope you have Tidied Up Toodyay in June to impress the Judges. THERE is a time through the vegetable growing year that the zucchini is in plentiful supply. Capitalise on that abundance and make this delicious soup. It freezes really well.Ingredients:2 onions, quartered1 tablespoon butter or margarine1 kg zucchini, sliced4 celery sticks, chopped4 cups vegetable stock1 cup milkPinch of nutmegMethod:Heat the butter or margarine in a large soup pot over medium heat and add the onion cooking it until it is soft and clear. Add the celery and sliced zucchiniand cook for several minutes stirring periodically. Add the chicken stock and simmer until the vegetables are thoroughly cooked. Add a pinch of nutmeg and a small amount of freshly ground pepper. Cream the soup with a vitamiser then add the skim milk. A dob of cream is added to serve with croutons or fresh, crusty bread.

Toodyay Irish Dancers

THE dancers, parents and teacher have been busily preparing in anticipation of the Avon Valley Arts Society Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod was held in Northam at the Town Hall on Sunday June 22.

Top posture pays off at Eisteddfod The day started out with the Ballet and Scottishsectionsthenourfirstsection,thesolos. The girls did a very impressive job and looked very smart in their newly acquired tops. With the lunch break out of the way, we progressed onto the group sections. The junior four hand with Charlotte, Eloise, Jemma and Chais did a fantastic job working together, a very impressive performance. The girls held their posture very well throughout the entire performance. The standout performance for our day was Chenaey Ingram-KrugerandChloeRavendancing their two hand duet. The girls worked very well together dancing in perfect synchronisation with lovely sharp arms and footwork. Their hard work paid off as they received a good result from the judge. It is a busy month ahead with preparations for the Avon Descent Food Festival. The festival will be held in Toodyay in August. For the girls who dance in Feis, held in Perth, there is a normal feis being held at the end of June. However the big event fast approaching is the State Championships being held at the end of July.

Students knuckle down for red tips

and purple stripesAvon Valley Shotokan Karate Club

NOTLONGnowuntilthefirstgradingforthe year so keep practising. The date set for grading from red tip (9th mon-kyu) to purple stripe (4th kyu) is July 20. Sensei will let students know if they are ready for this grading by the end of term. Last month we were talking about Ryan Prater being one of our big champions and his determination paid off at the recent Perth OpenChampionshipswherehecamefirstinhis kata. Congratulations to Bree Johnston as well who attended a tournament in Perth for the first time and came second in her kumitedivision. Tyler O’Dwyer came third in the novice and open kata and also in the open kumite. Shaun Lawler came third in his open kata division and Daniel Lawler continues to improve at each tournament. It’s great to see more students having some fun at the tournaments in Perth. A big thank you to Elaine Hall who attended the recent Community Bank Clean Up Day and donated the money she earnt for picking up rubbish to our club. Also thanks to the few parents and students who helped out with another rubbish collection around the Showgrounds recently as part of our Adopt-a spot program. Training fees will be going up by 5% in Term 3 and the new fee schedule will be available at the dojo or is also on our facebook site. Please have the term fees paid for by week 2 as despite this increase, the cost per lesson is still very cheap. Club fundraising goes towards reducing costs and without it students would be required to buy all their own equipment

(face mask, chest plate, gloves etc), as well contribute to hall hire and other expenses. An hour or two of help with a fundraising activity from every family each term will go a long way to keeping karate affordable for everyone. The next Club Challenge is at the Toodyay Dojo at 5.30pm on Friday 4 July. A sausage sizzle and cool drinks will be available to buy on the night and this is another fundraising activity for the club. With such a strong representation at the NationalKarateChampionships this year,and with them being held in Joondalup, the club would like to try and get as many members as possible down to Perth to support and watch our students. The proposal is to hire a bus or car pool and all travel down together. Our students will be competing on Friday August 1, which would mean a day of absence from school for other junior students to attend. There will be a list at the Toodyay Dojo so interested parents please put your name down by Friday July 4 (Club Challenge). This is a great opportunity for all students and parents to see the talent that WA and Australia has to offer in karate as well as cheer on our representatives. Private karate lessons are available by appointment, so please see Sensei Helen to book a time. All classes are held during school term only. Lions maintain momentum with winning month

TOODYAY’S season is travelling along very well indeed, apart from injuries to some of our players. This past month has seen the league continuing its momentum and winning every game. Due to injuries requiring some of our reservesplayershavingtostepuptofilltheleague ranks, it has meant that the reserves have had a bit more of a tougher time. Round 7 saw Toodyay hosting Wongan Ballidu on the Belt Up Cup weekend. The reserves had an exceptional game keeping Wongan scoreless to half time and only allowing 1 goal through for the whole game. With Liam Forsyth keeping the goal umpire busy down Toodyay’s end, kicking 7 goals for the game. Final score was Toodyay 108 to Wongan six. Best Players Liam Forsyth, Samuel

However getting Matt Welburn back from the WAFL was a positive. The Boomers won the toss and kicked with the strong breeze, however it was Toodyay who jumped out of the blocks early and poured on 7 goals to the Boomers 2. Matt Welburn showed his class by gathering the ball at half back, taking a 5 bounce run through the wing and kicking a goal from well outside the 50m mark, a contender for ‘goal of the year’. The next 2 quarters saw a wet and windy affair with a fairly even tough game, however the final quarter saw Toodyay power home kicking eight goals to one, winning comfortably. Final Scores were Toodyay 145 to Wongan 68. Best players Corey Hutchings, Jakeb Lyne, Adam Pearce, Stanley Collard and Grant Ewing with Corey Hutchings being the umpires best on ground and winning the Belt Up Cup ball. Round eight once again saw a home game for Toodyay, this time against Dalwallinu. The reserves game performance from

Toodyay was not a good one with the Dally boyskickingawayinthefirstquarterandalacklustre Toodyay struggling to keep up. Ever Reliable stalwarts in name of Adam Donnegan and Ryan Sinclair battled on all game assisted by newcomer David Vincentti who we hope to see a lot more. Final score Toodyay 33 Dalwallinu 63. Best players Adam Donegan, Ryan Sinclair, David Vincetti, Darcy Parker, Beau Jackson-Hammond. The league game saw a beefed up Dally team, with the inclusion of ex North Melbourne player Daniel Pratt, and an injury ravaged Toodyay team front up. Dallyfiredupfirst,however,inaccuracyinfront of goals saw them only able to kick two goals eight points to Toodyay’s four goals six inthefirsthalf. The second half sawToodyay’s fitnessenable them to kick away to become eventual winners 78 points to 35. Best Players were Corey Hutchings, Ben Jenkins, Dylan Burgess, Patrick Wilkinson and Martin Michael. This carnival is for the regions from Geraldton to Avon and the Mortlock region sent a combined team which included Toodyay young guns, Joel Welburn, Connor McBride, Liam Forsythe, Samuel Fergusson and Jordan Osboine. Toodyay Ballet SchoolLani McGeady

DANCING With The Stars judge Joshua Horner thrilled students with a visit to Toodyay Ballet School on May 22. Joshua, who played the lead in Billy Elliot and recently starred in Chorus Line, provided an unbelievable opportunity and experience for local dancers. At 16, Joshua was accepted into The Australian Ballet School in Melbourne under the direction of Gailene Stock. In his second year Joshua won the ‘Nescafe Big Break’ Award for $20,000 to help his training and development for a career in the Arts. After three intensive years he Graduated with ‘Honours’ with an Advanced Diploma in Dance and was then instantly offered a contract with The Australian Ballet. JoshuaspentfiveandahalfyearswiththeAustralian Ballet and during this time he was most known for his role as “Jack” in Graeme Murphy’s Dance Musical “Tivoli”. He was nominated for a Helpmann Award (Australia’s Tony’s) in 2002 for Best Male Dancer and in 2003 won an Australian Dance Award for “Most Outstanding Performance in a Stage Musical” for his performance in “Tivoli”. During his time with the Australian Ballet he performed principal roles such as “Spartacus” in Spartacus and featured in works like In the Upper Room, Four Temperaments, In the Night, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Manon, The Merry Widow, Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake and Nutcracker, Mercurial Maneouvers, Voluntaries, Por Vos Muero, The Three Musketeers, Rites and Divergence, just to name a few. Having a strong passion for Musical Theatre, Joshua decided to make his dream a reality and left the Australian Ballet mid 2004. He was cast straight away in the World Premiere of Dirty Dancing “The Classic Story Onstage’. Workingwithwriterofthehitfilm,EleanorBergstein, he was cast as a featured ensemble member and covered and played the role of “Johnny Castle”. We just couldn’t believe that Josh would come all the way to Toodyay to do a masterclass and private lessons with our country students. We had 20 students lucky enough to take part in his 2 hour masterclass. Josh took the students through a basic Disneyland audition and had them saving dance fairies and making hashtag tiaras. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves as did their parents when they all got to come in and

takeselfiesandphotoswithJoshattheendofthe workshop. Josh stayed for nine hours taking solo lessons for our comp kids; they all have lasting memories of this great day. Josh awarded three scholarships to Bonnie McGeady, Bailey Glen and Bella Watson with Jasmine Watson receiving a gift voucher for a free pair of dance shoes. DanceQuest comps this year over the long weekend in June was one of the most exciting competitions we have ever taken part in. The kids just could not believe the chance to see Michael Dimeski perform live as the special guest artist for the Finals night. Michael was this year’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ winner. It was an inspirational night and lots of giddy teenagers. We were lucky enough to have Bonnie McGeady qualify for the finals night championships. It’s the second year in a row that Bonnie has qualified for the

senior championships and what a fantastic performancesheputoninthefinals.Itwasafantastic night of entertainment, one the kids will remember for a long time. WealsotookpartinAVASforthefirsttimein a couple of years this year. So on 22 June we travelled over to Northam to support the Avon Valley Arts Society for their local Eisteddfod, which was a lovely day of entertainment with Irish, Highland and of course ballet, jazz, acro and contemporary. The talented students from the Avon Valley all enjoyed the day. I am so proud of all my students and the way they continually represent us at events around WA, always on their best behaviour and always displaying great

sportsmanship. We are almost into exams again for 2014 and then it will be a fantastic run up to this years 20th Anniversary concert. We are planning on inviting all students past and present to come along to this huge milestone for us and enjoy themselves with a night of entertainment and fun.
