OSCAR WILDE'S ITALIAN DREAM, 1875-1900

Renato Miracco

[Bologna]: Damiani, 2020.First Edition.25cm x 18cm. 160 pages, duotone illustrations. Pictorial matte papered boards.

The Infamous St. Oscar of Oxford, Poet and Martyr. Undecided between theCloister and the Cafe. "In Oscar Wilde's Italian Dream 1875-1900, leading Wildeauthor Renato Miracco has combined written research with visualiconographic material - from Wilde's earliest heady trips to Italy as an Oxfordstudent to his final days in France and Italy in 1900 after his incarceration inReading Gaol, and his voluntary exile from Great Britain. Italy, and the largerworld outside of London, was essential to the sensitivity and awareness ofWilde's identity, to his contributions to the prison reform, to his challenges tothe social norms and sexual stereotypes in his last years. Latin formed thebasis of a proper English gentleman's education-and Italy presented alandscape which animated and exacerbated social and personal conflict foryoung men such as Wilde. It also offered a great deal of sexual libertycompared to the oppressive moral atmosphere of England at that time. Theimages Miracco has incorporated in this volume (including photos that Wildereceived from the gay German photographer, Von Gloeden) are mainlyunknown from private collections, and together with letters, reminiscences, magazine and newspaper articles (along with derogatory articles about Wildewritten by the Italian press) play a key role in placing Wilde-s character, and anentire generation, in a complex context - not only literary, but also visual.Reading about Naples, Rome, Palermo, Sicily, and Capri of that time, you see itas it must have appeared in the eyes of the writer. Oscar Wilde's Italian Dream1875-1900 is a major addition to the canon of one of the world's greatestliterary figures." (publisher's blurb)

"Over 300 images by the most famous contemporary Japanese photographerfrom the 1960s to today. Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is known the worldover for his controversial erotic portraits of Japanese women, often boundusing the kinbaku (Japanese bondage) technique. A unique figure incontemporary photography, he has always found creative inspiration in hisdaily existence, without making any distinction between his personal life andpublic and professional practice. The Araki Effect offers a broad overview ofhis career: from the first series from 1963-1965, Satchin and His Brother Mabo,to Subway of Love, a large collection of images taken in the Tokyo subwaybetween 1963 and 1972, the year he also made Autumn in Tokyo, whichrecounts the autumn he spent wandering through the city in the twilight hours. These are followed by Sentimental Night in Kyoto, less well-known than thefamous Sentimental Journey, both tributes to his wife, Yoko; Balcony of Love,Death Reality, Tokyo Diary from 2017, and one of his latest collections, Araki'sParadise from 2019. The power of Araki's images lies precisely in the force theyemanate, the essence of the feeling - be it pain or joy - that the Japanesemaster puts into every picture. Araki transforms the set into a stage on whichonly he and the subject exist." (publisher's blurb)

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT

Han Werner Holzwarth; Jean-Michel Basquiat

Koln: Taschen, 2020.40th Anniversary Edition.22.5cm x 16cm. 512 pages, colour illustrations. Illustrated glossy paperedboards.

"The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous with1980s New York, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s under the tag SAMO,spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. Heappeared as part of a thriving underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hiphop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As apainter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the establishedmilieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.Basquiat's expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated wordsand phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane history and the politics of street life-so when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat answered "royalty, heroismand the streets." In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of artstars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 was on the cover of The New York TimesMagazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had become one of themost successful artists of his time.First published in an XXL edition, this unprecedented insight into Basquiat's artis now available in a compact, accessible volume in celebration of TASCHEN's40th anniversary. With pristine reproductions of his most seminal paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches, it offers vivid proximity to Basquiat'sintricate marks and scribbled words, further illuminated by an introduction tothe artist from editor Hans Werner Holzwarth, as well as an essay on histhemes and artistic development from curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne.Richly illustrated year-by-year chapter breaks follow the artist's life and quotefrom his own statements and contemporary reviews to provide both personalbackground and historical context." JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, 1960-1988: THEEXPLOSIVE FORCE OF THE STREETS

Leonhard Emmerling; Jean-Michel Basquiat

Koln: Taschen, 2021.Reprint.26.5cm x 21.5cm. 96 pages, colour illustrations. Illustrated glossy paperedboards.

"An icon of 1980s New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) first made hisname under the graffiti tag "SAMO," before establishing his studio practice andcatapulting to fast fame at the age of 20. Although his career lasted barely adecade, he remains a cult figure of artistic social commentary, and a trailblazerin the mediation of graffiti and gallery art. Basquiat's work drew upon diversesources and media to create an original and urgent artistic vocabulary, bitingwith critique against structures of power and racism. His practice mergedabstraction and figuration, poetry and painting, while his influences spannedGreek, Roman, and African art, French poetry, jazz, and the work of artisticcontemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly. The results are vivid, visceral mixtures of words, African emblems, cartoonish figures, daubs of boldcolor, and beyond. This book presents Basquiat's short but prolific career, hisunique style, and his profound engagement with ever-relevant issues ofintegration and segregation, poverty and wealth." HR GIGER, 1940-2014

HR Giger

Koln: Taschen, 2021.Reprint.26.5cm x 21.5cm. 96 pages, colour illustrations. Illustrated glossy paperedboards.

"Swiss artist HR Giger (1940-2014) is most famous for his creation of the spacemonster in Ridley Scott's 1979 horror sci-fi film Alien, which earned him anOscar. In retrospect, this was just one of the most popular expressions ofGiger's biomechanical arsenal of creatures, which consistently merged hybridsof human and machine into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. The visions drew on demons of the past, harking back as far as Giger's earliestchildhood fears as well as evoking mythologies for the future. Above all, theygave expression to the collective fears and fantasies of his age: fear of theatom, of pollution and wasted resources, and of a future in which our bodiesdepend on machines for survival. From surrealist dream landscapes createdwith a spray gun and stencils to album cover designs, from guillotine-likesculptures to self-designed bars, Giger personally guides us through his multi-faceted universe in this definitive introduction to a master of horror. Detailedreproductions and designs and a foreword by Timothy Leary complementGiger's intimate autobiographical texts." (publisher's blurb)

EYE TO EYE: PORTRAITS OF LESBIANS

JEB

New York: Anthology Editions, 2021.New Edition.28.5cm x 22cm. 88 pages, black and white illustrations. Blue cloth, whitelettering, pictorial onlay.

"In 1979, JEB (Joan E. Biren) self-published her first book, Eye to Eye: Portraitsof Lesbians. Revolutionary at that time, JEB made photographs of lesbiansfrom different ages and backgrounds in their everyday lives-working, playing, raising families, and striving to remake their worlds. The photographs wereaccompanied by testimonials from the women pictured in the book, as well aswritings from icons including Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich and a foreword fromJoan Nestle. Eye to Eye signalled a radical new way of seeing - moving lesbianlives from the margins to the centre, and reversing a history of invisibility. Morethan just a book, it was an affirmation of the existence of lesbians that helpedto propel a political movement. Reprinted for the first time in forty years andfeaturing new essays from photographer Lola Flash and former soccer playerLori Lindsey, Eye to Eye is a faithful reproduction of a work that continues toresonate in the queer community and beyond."
