Alligators are reptiles.

Alligators have been living on Earth for millions of years and are sometimes described as ‘living fossils’.

There are two different species of alligator, the American alligator and the Chinese alligator.

American alligators live in south-eastern areas of the United States such as Florida and Louisiana.

Chinese alligators are found in the Yangtze River but they are critically endangered and only a few remain in the wild.

Like other reptiles, alligators are cold-blooded.

Alligators can weigh over 450 kg (1000 lb).

Alligators have a powerful bite but the muscles that open the jaw are relatively weak. An adult human could hold the jaws

of an alligator shut with their bare hands.

Alligators eat a range of different animals such as fish, birds, turtles and even deer.

Alligator eggs become male or female depending on the temperature, male in warmer temperatures and female in cooler temperatures.

Like crocodiles, alligators are part of the order ‘Crocodylia’

different communities.”Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:“Certainly, I very much appreciate and understand such concerns because we are all tragically witness to the fact that some so-called Muslims have conducted heinous terrorist acts, both here in the UK and abroad in recent times. Such vile acts have created a climate of fear amongst non-Muslims and, at the same time, have served to defame the religion of Islam.”

Referring to the Muslims who had travelled abroad to join extremist groups, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

RISING Only Physiologists trained to understand mechanisms of actions in which drugs work– Salawu Taofeek Oladotun

For those who don't know the interrelationships between physiology and other medical professions especially medicine, Salawu Taofeek Oladotun, a physiology graduate from the University of Ibadan, has the answer. In this interview with Ismail Rotimi Lawal, he bares his minds on major significance of the profession, exposes the challenges the students of the course face, reveals secrets to academic success, as well as his relationship with the Khilafah when he was in school, among others.

May I know you? My name is Salawu Taofeek Oladotun; a native of Kwara State and a perfect gentleman to the core. Can you please tell us about your background? Well, I was born an Ahmadi. I attended my primary,

secondary and tertiary education in Ibadan, Oyo State. Which tertiary institution did you attend?e premier University, University Of Ibadan.

Briefly explain your discipline? I studied physiology. Some schools call it medical physiology or human physiology. As a physiologist, you can fit in practically in all well-structured medical centers or other sectors as quality control officers and you are also trained as a researcher.

Is your course related to psychology in any way? Actually, it's not. Both are in different faculties; but when it gets to advanced level, as a physiologist, you can

PAGE 24MAY 2018

further in clinical psychology in advanced countries. ere is no provision for that here in Nigeria. Can you explain why Physiology is so important?Physiology is very important as it is the bedrock of medicine and it is also a research-based course. So, as a physiologist, you can also proffer solutions to some diseases through discovery of extract and good understanding of the mechanisms with which they work. Also, in the chain of drug production, it has to pass through a physiologist before it can be certified for use because only a physiologist is trained to understand the mechanism of actions in which drugs works. We go to the cellular level.

What are the challenges your profession is facing?e major challenge in our profession is the power tussle with health workers in the clinic. is is because the role of physiologist wasn't defined in the past. But now, we are overcoming it gradually.

How can the challenge of the power tussle be addressed? It is being currently addressed by making physiology a professional course and also by making students realize that the course is also research-based. One very interesting thing about physiology is its divisions. We have cardio-respiratory physiology, reproductive physiology, neuro-physiology, gastro-intestinal physiology, applied and environmental physiology. A student must be ready to step up to the PhD level in order to be a consultant in any of these fields.

What are the major misconceptions people have about your profession? e major misconception is that as a physiologist, you have to be a babysitter for doctors. It's capital 'no'.

How can you render your service for the progress and development of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community? As a physiologist, I can team up with the Jama'at medical team (this I have been doing till date) and help in areas of blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), visual acuity (VA), electroencephalogram (EEG), full blood count and many more. Also, I give health talks and partake frequently in free medical camps organized by the Jama'at.

For anyone willing to venture into this discipline, what are the skills one has to have to succeed in this field? One has to be research-oriented and ready to think out of the box; think the unthinkable. E.g. describing a working mechanism for yawning or working on extracts to cure ailments. In physiology, we don't believe something is impossible until we enter and get out of the laboratory with convincing results.

Can you share some of the challenges you faced while in school and how you overcomed them? e major challenge I faced was trying to cross from my department to another department after my first year and alas it didn't work out. So, I buckled down during my postgraduate (PG)

PAGE 25MAY 2018

programme and made sure I finished with a good grade.

What was your relationship with the Khalifat when you were in school? I did write to the khalifah often for guidance and prayers and the response I got always made me believe I was on the right path and that Almighty Allah had blessed my endeavors.

What do you think are the keys to academic success? I believe prayer, perseverance, hard work, focus, commitment and prayer again are the keys to academic success.

What is your favorite food? Hot yam and fish garnished stew are my favorite food.

What is your favorite Color? e colour of life, blue.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Surfing the internet, writing articles and playing soccer.

What is your relationship status? I am single What motivates you as a person? I am motivated by solving complex technical challenges. I also want to research on what has never been done before so as to cure ailments and save humanity.

Who are your mentors and why do you choose them? e Holy Prophet (saw) is my mentor; I want to be like him (Al-Amin). I always want to say the truth no matter

the obstacle. Besides, my project supervisor, Head of Department and Professors are my role models; their research skills are superb and qualitative.

Besides being born as an Ahmadi, what is your personal conviction about the Imam of the Age? I believe in the Imam of the age owing to some of the facts in the Holy Qur'an and also the way others handle death and resurrection of Prophet Isa (as). Compared to ours, their interpretations of 'Tawaffa' and 'Rafa' are quite confusing. What advice do you have for undergraduate students? Undergraduate students must be focused and prayerful. Prayer is the key. Don't wait for exam periods before observing Tahajjud; do it regularly. Also, they should move and interact with like minds. Sure, there are no jobs outside but First Class graduates are exceptions. Be the best you can, struggle and strive to be the best you can. For a mind that knows is a mind that is free.

Comment on your activeness with AMSA programme in school During my undergraduate days, I was an active AMSA member, though we had issues of registration then, but
