In My Opinion

We always wonder how to be happy How do we find tranquil-ity and peace of mind How do we keep the soul joyful and balanced The answer is very simple BE AWARE OF THE PRESENT We are always thinking about the future or regret-ting the past while we let the moment the present become in-visible How challenging it is to live in the moment We are so accustomed to using our time to prepare for the unknown and worrying about our future when it is our present that matters the most The present is the food for our soul and all too often it gets lost in the unpredictability of the unknown our future

What do we have to do in order to pay more attention to our present We need to begin by taking time to see the world around us Letrsquos absorb with all our senses what is happening in our lives and find the way to enjoy it in the present We all need to create a connection between the present moment and our lives as we are living them now This is the only way we will have a chance to experience life in its fullest possible sense There is nothing worse than being on vacation and not being able to stop thinking what we will have to do when we go back to work We have the tendency to ruin the greatest moments when we disconnect ourselves from them Letrsquos stop and redirect how we live every day It is difficult if we are always absent from the present moment and therefore miss it To finally say ldquoI will be in the mo-ment and I will experience the nowrdquo is truly an epiphany We have missed so much Letrsquos make a decision that from this moment on we will put our energy into having the best and most meaningful experience TODAY Letrsquos be present for our loved ones today Not tomorrow but today now Try Stop reading and go Create the moment you wish to be at and ENJOY Feel the excitement of being in the present This attitude in life will bring happiness and enjoyment to life We just celebrated Passover Freedom is what Passover is all about We can find freedom when we allow our existence and our life to ldquobe free from the slavery of the unknownrdquo Freedom is being able to rejoice in the present in the moment in the now So relax sit back and enjoy who you are and where you are right now Worrying and complaining wonrsquot solve anything Letrsquos look around and see all the beauty we have missed by not being here in the ldquonowrdquo Smile and enjoy You have discovered that the gift of being alive is being here With a strong sense of hope for our present the now Rabbi Uri Goren

Cantorial NotesThis past Sunday morning Brett was play-ing a leadership development video to start the day It was a TED talk by Brene Brown speaking about ways to overcome the fears that become obstacles in our lives At one point she spoke about how many of us fo-cus on the big moments in life We donrsquot take the time to notice the little things but instead devote our energy toward that big event I couldnrsquot help but think about my Bar and Bat Mitzvah families as she described the stress people put toward one big mo-ment neglecting the actual moments that got them there I often meet with students who have a parent or grandparent who have offered to help himher prepare for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah What I constantly tell those students and families is that those are the moments that are meaningful The mo-ments to take in The big day will come and go in a blink of an eye We spend months prepar-ing for what will ultimately be only a few hours Itrsquos vital to take the time to acknowl-edge and enjoy the moments along the way Maybe itrsquos reviewing the Torah portion with a grandparent maybe it is shopping for special invitations maybe itrsquos the mitzvah project we are working hard on The spe-cial day is incredible but just as incredible and just as important are those smaller mo-ments that get us there We must take the time to find the joy in those moments and allow ourselves to feel that happiness Itrsquos what life is all about

Religious School NewsThe first Havdalah ceremony that I remem-ber was at sleep-away camp when I was thirteen years old The entire camp met on the basketball court standing together in a circle under the stars bringing closure to the Shabbat that we had welcomed 25 hours earlier down by the lake Arms entwined during the singing of Shavua Tov (wishes for a good week) it felt somewhat mysti-cal and remains one of my favorite Jewish rituals Havdalah marks the end of Shabbat and is therefore considered a somewhat bittersweet ceremony as we stand on the cusp of our everyday lives reluctantly let-ting go of our Shabbat joy and rest The word Havdalah means separation or dis-tinction when we distinguish between the sacred time of Shabbat vs the secular time of the rest of the week ldquobetween the time when we have celebrated the very act of Creation and a time of returning to the act of creatingrdquo (Ron Wolfson Shabbat) Havdalah is a brief but beautiful cer-emony that is traditionally celebrated at home All you need is a braided candle with two or more wicks a cup of wine or grape juice filled to the brim fragrant spic-es (besamin) and the text of the blessings Just as we usher in Shabbat with candles wine and blessings we bid farewell with these items as well However unlike Shab-bat which begins at sundown when we see three stars in the sky it is time to bid Shab-bat goodbye There are several explanations for the multi-wick candles The Babylonian

Talmud specified that the Havdalah candle should be a lsquotorchrsquo symbolizing the work-week to come burning differently than our single wicked Shabbat candles The braided candle can also represent the interdepen-dence of our families our communities and Klal Yisroel (all Jewish people) During the ceremony we recite a blessing over the besamin which is unique to Havdalah Ac-cording to Rabbinic tradition each of us re-ceives an additional soul (neshama yeteira) on Shabbat which enhances our spiritual enjoyment of the day This extra soul leaves us during Havdalah and the fragrance of the spices is intended to revive our spirits at this loss Before extinguishing the candle in the overflowed wine (just as we do not blow out Shabbat candles we donrsquot blow out the Havdalah candle) a custom is to hold up your palms and look at the shadows made by your fingers another distinction between light and dark The flickering of the Havdalah candle casting shadows in the usually darkened room combined with the aroma of fragrant spices adds to the special atmosphere of this ceremony On Saturday March 13 the families of grades K-4 joined together with Rabbi Goren Cantor Jessica and their teachers for a virtual Pajama Havdalah Each family was given a bag filled with all the necessary items (with the addition of glow sticks) and we enjoyed sharing this special moment in time together

On Sunday April 25 in the temple parking lot Social Action is going to have a series of things they are collecting for drop off on Mitzvah Day These include books for Book Fairies pet supplies for a rescue called Morgans Quest canned goods for the food pantries Hatzilu and Long Beach and cleaning supplies or cereal cups for Ronald McDonald House Itrsquos just like the Better Together day but with an art project It will be a drop off event between 11 am And 2 pm We Care Blankets and the Sisterhood book group are ongoing Thank you Lin-da Goldstricker for two more beautiful blankets You must be a Sisterhood mem-ber to belong to book group and all Sister-hood members are welcome to join the dis-cussion The book selection for April 13th is The Third Daughter by Talia Carner Our discussions have been especially thought provoking this year For more information please contact Ellyn Katz at ellyn143aolcom

What do our children think of refugeesHow do you know One way of broaching the subject is to suggest they read this prize-winning book Mollyrsquos Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen geared toward children between the ages of 8 and 11 Mollyrsquos family newcomers to the Unit-ed States move to a town some distance from New York City The children make fun of Mollyrsquos accent When asked to bring in a representation of a Thanksgiving char-acter Molly brought a doll that was dressed in Eastern European clothing similar to what her mother wore when she came came here The children laughed The teacher said ldquoIrsquom going to put this beautiful doll on my desk where everyone can see it all the time It will remind us that pilgrims are still coming to Americardquo If you wish to borrow the book it will be delivered to your home (Call 516-536-7911)

PTOSpring is here and itrsquos time to take stock of all we have accomplished this year It goes without saying that this has been a challeng-ing year for all Yet under the extraordinary leadership of our school director Phyllis Pellman our Religious School has con-tinued to thrive Classes are Zooming and students are learning Jewish history tradi-tions rituals and prayers The teachers have thought of creative activities to keep the children engaged The children have par-ticipated in special Shabbat and Havdalah services The seventh graders have been able to participate in a virtual tour of the Holocaust Museum and learn from a mu-seum educator A special thank you to Ms Pellman for organizing a fun interactive Purim event for our Temple families And we were able to invite local synagogues to join us for this Family Game Night so that we made some new friends with local Jew-ish families We are looking forward to Mitzvah Day which is Sunday April 25th Please

Mitzvah Day 2021Sunday April 25 2021

11 am to 2 pmOne of our favorite aspects of the annual Temple Avodah Mitzvah Day is the feeling that comes from fellowship in action - join-ing with our fellow congregants and their families spending time and energy to lift those in need and to advance the great orga-nizations that serve our friends and neigh-bors The Pandemic has not eliminated need in our community and true to our mission the Social Action Committee has a plan to address that need while keeping our com-munity safe Things will look a little different for Mitzvah Day this year as we gather over the course of three hours in the Temple parking lot for our annual Day of Service In the parking lot you can add your touch to our community art projects add your con-tribution to our Giant Tzedekah Box and of course drop off canned goods and other items for distribution to our usual and new Mitzvah Day partners Best of all spend some time catching up with people you may not have seen in a year or so In view of the Pandemic this will be an outdoor event with no bathrooms and no food being served Social distancing and masking will be observed Kids are wel-come and a complete list of items being collected will be announced in the coming weeks Not ready for an in-person outing We get it and we have a plan for that too email the name and mailing address of a charity you support along with a brief description of what they do and why you support them to paulmengelhotmailcom or lisagreengold2aolcom We will com-pile that information into an index to share boosting the signal You are also invited to join us at our next meeting on Saturday April 3 on Zoom at 1030 am Fellowship Fresh air Philanthropy One way or the other Mitzvah Day 2021 will be one to remember Paul Engel Lisa Goldberg

FAITH FELICE GELFOND April 10 2021Faith is a kind heart-ed young lady who loves school coding girl scouts swim-ming playing her clarinet and hanging out with her friends

She is smart and witty and enjoys commu-nity service She chose a Mitzvah Project to raise money for a local organization called Limb Kind Foundation She came to me with this idea last January in order to give herself enough time Her proposal was well thought out and defined with a very do-able plan ldquoLetrsquos redeem bottle and give the money to Limb Kindrdquo This now high honor roll kid came up with a brilliant idea followed through involved her community synagogue and friends to give her bottles and has raised to date almost $210000 from bottles Yes 5 cents at a time She will be presenting her donation at her services We are so very proud of the person Faith is and hope she keeps studying hard so she can achieve her dream of working at NASA one day This kid is truly reaching for the stars

BrsquoNAI MITZVAHARIELLE DREW ZIFF April 16 2021Arielle Drew daugh-ter of Kasey and Bil-ly Ziff is currently an eighth grader at Oceanside Middle School and will be-come a Bat Mitzvah

on April 16th of this year Arielle has always been interested in theater and has been per-forming since she was 5 years old taking classes at To The Stage in Oceanside and more recently attending Belvoir Terrace a summer school for performing and cre-ative arts Ari has been seen as a Bird Girl in Seussical at OMS Marty in Madagascar Jr at School 3 and Dorothy in The Wiz-ard of Oz at Belvoir Terrace She has been studying cello for the past 6 years and per-forms with both the eighth grade orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra at OMS Arielle also sings with the eighth grade chorus and Swing Choir at the middle school and has been a member of the temple choir since she was in third grade Ari has been a participant in NYSSMA for several years earning high marks in both cello and vocal performance Ari loves to spend her free time skiing making Tic-Toks with her sister Layla and snuggling with her dogs Wilson and Reba

outstandingly artistic incredibly creative super fun amazing work of art that will be added to other astonishing creations from organizations across our

Better Together Initiative

Together our creations will be assembled into a ldquoquiltrdquo of togetherness love and appreciation for each other
