POST CARD Carte Postale Postkarte Dear both,—Thanks for the invite to speak at the Mon seminar . Not sure what to say ! I could talk about the chequer “Hippodamian” plans and relation to democracy ( but see Shipley on Hoepfner and SChwadner etc ) . Maybe Priene ? I could also present my recent book on honorific statues, ifyou think not too boring ! But am no archaeologist . Though of course after all those years The main problems are ( I think ): first a substantive one ( contribution made of archaeology to debates re nature of the polis as state, and about elitism vs “democracy” ( ? ),— second, a methodological one, namely how to relate arch. evid. to litt,, doc, etc.— third, a theoretical one, namely how to talk about social and complexity ( paradox not enough ). At first I thought was goingto get tie myself into terrible knots but now it seems to me that there is some way out. My position on the polis— that it is a state, end as such P T O
