From the Clutter of My Old Office Corner V

(A Continuing Saga of a Cluttered Office)

Submitted by an anonymous Verona resident

Spring is upon us. As I am spending as much time outside as I can, my time at the old desk

has been limited. My Coke case still holds many ‘treasures’ and I will return to them at a later

date. But for now, my eyes are drawn to a reminder from a significant spring ritual of years past.

Hanging on the big bulletin board on the wall behind my desk is a rug beater - an essential tool

for spring cleaning. The living room rug, after months of only being cleaned with the carpet

sweeper, was rolled up and taken outside. It was draped over several clothes lines ready to be

rid of its deep dirt. As you might have guessed, it was my job to beat the rug, pounding out a

year’s worth of dusty accumulation!

This three-foot beater looks similar to a badminton racket. The head is bare wire formed

into various shapes, the most prominent are two large hearts. This sits on top of a twisted wire

shaft running through a wooden handle at the end. It cleaned surprisingly well as the dirt rose to

the surface which was then swept away. The process took a l-o-n-g time. To make the time go by

more quickly, I turned the beats into hitting home runs, sword fighting, swatting giant flies, and

other imagined feats. Still, it was an eternity of beat and sweep, beat and sweep! Another spring

cleaning event involved the beds. Each mattress was carried outside, leaned against a tree or

clothes line pole to air out. The bed springs of coiled wire were thoroughly washed by hand and

left to dry.

While I am on the subject of cleaning…a well-worn wash board, partially exposed behind

the desk, rests against the wall. It consists of a rippled aluminum panel held in place by a

wooden frame, two feet by one foot. The top had a space for a bar of Fels Napta soap while the

legs at the bottom were submerged in a tub of wash water. This essential from the past has a

beauty all of its own. The wood, roughened and eroded by the soapy water, now has a silver

patina.

But life isn’t all hard work as the ‘treasures’ above suggest. The bulletin board also in-

cludes reminders of fun things and events. An iconic Pillsbury doughboy and a rubber chicken are

displayed. Commemorative tickets for the first UW women’s basketball game at the Kohl

Center are dated Tuesday, January 20, 1998. The free tickets were handed out as a way to fill the

arena for that initial game. As you might suspect, the seating was in the nose-bleed section.

Today the ol’ knees probably couldn’t make it up that many steps! Joining the basketball tickets

is a sponsor ticket for a NASCAR race at Chicagoland Speedway. Attached to it are two passes: a

“cold” pass for the garage area before the race and a “hot” pass for pit areas during the race. A

nice memory is that we were able to rub elbows and meet drivers in the hospitality section be-

fore the race. Another unforgettable memory is the indescribable noise generated by the cars.

Ear protection was a must!

Until the next time, remember … it’s good for you.

The Ol’ Pack Rat

taking care of themselves. They may experience

negative thought patterns that contribute to this

condition. Negative thoughts can then turn into

resentment and fatigue. Here are some factors that

contribute to caregiver fatigue:

Role strain or role confusion is when someone

takes on a second role as a caregiver. For example,

when a spouse begins caregiving for their partner.

In this situation, caregiving often takes the lead

and the person struggles to identify with their

original role such as a wife feeling like she isn’t a

wife anymore.

Unreasonable demands from the person they

are caring for or family members. Exhaustion can

play a part in a caregiver feeling like they should be

able to meet all of the demands being made.

Unrealistic expectations can be difficult for

caregivers to accept the fact that the person they

are caring for may not live, despite their efforts.

Lack of control of the situation or resources

available such as lack of money to get more help.

What does Caregiver Fatigue look like?

Caregiver fatigue looks different for everyone.

Often times symptoms will resemble depression.

Some other common symptoms include:

 Withdrawal from friends, family, regular

activities.

Lack of motivation towards job or tasks.

Increased use of alcohol or drugs. This

could include sleeping pills or prescription

drugs.

 Missing appointments or forgetting things.

Sleep issues such as not being able to fall or

stay asleep.

 Feelings of hopelessness, alienation, helpless-

ness, depression, irritability, or resentment.

Negativity towards their job and responsibili-

ties.

How can we avoid Caregiver Fatigue?

Self-neglect is one of the biggest causes of caregiver

fatigue. Self-advocacy and being proactive both play

a big part of avoiding caregiver fatigue. Here are a

few things to consider:

Ask for help. You don’t have to do it alone.

Consider respite care. There are public and

private options to consider. Take time off and don’t

feel guilty.

Speak up. If you are feeling overwhelmed don’t

assume anyone recognizes it. If you need help or a

break, let someone know. Talk to someone you

trust.

Prioritize relationships. Keep in touch with

friends.

Take care of yourself. Eat well, rest and exercise.

Find a support group for caregivers. This will give

you an opportunity to share experiences and re-

sources.

Explore optimism. This is hard to do! Sometimes

thinking positively and making sure your inner voice

is doing he same can make a difference.

How can we support caregivers?

Above all, be a good listener, hold back the urge to

offer advice, and instead offer ongoing help. This

may be difficult if the person says they don’t need

help. Consider one or more

suggestions listed on page 16.

Hello Spring! April showers bring May flowers… and boy

hat makes you happy? I find that I’m most happy spending time with my family, and of course being a

grandma to Olivia. But if we are being honest, how many of us find that on some days, it’s almost

impossible to find anything to be happy about? The struggle is real and I feel it too. Many of us are feeling

emotions that we’ve never had before, and happiness doesn't even seem within our scope of reach. But, as we

make our way back into normalcy (or a new normal, eventually) I encourage you to find at least one thing that

will bring you happiness everyday. Sit down, make a list of the little things that you can do to improve your

happiness, and get started! Here’s a few ideas to get your juices flowing!

Turn on your favorite music, turn it up loud, sing, dance, play the air

guitar; just have fun. Heck, invite over some friends for a dance party!

Re-experience something that made you happy in the past. Re-read an

old favorite book, or re-watch a movie that made you laugh.

Visit a place that brings back good memories, like a favorite walking trail,

take a stroll through the zoo or the arboretum.

Leave a random note for a neighbor to find, just to cheer up their day. It

will cheer you up too!

Call a friend and reminisce about old memories. Chances are, they

would love to talk too!

ALWAYS remember that tomorrow is another day.

Happy 1st birthday, Olivia! What a year its been. Olivia has taught me how

to love in ways I never knew possible, and being her grandma has filled my

heart with pure joy. Thank you for following us through Olivia’s first year

journey, and for all of the sweet comments and responses you provided

while watching her grow. Becky

It’s with mixed emotions that I

share with you, I left my position

here at the Verona Senior Center

as of March 26th. As some of you

know, I went back to school a

couple of years ago to pursue my

bachelors degree and I will

complete it in June 2021. Yay, I’m

almost done! ! I can do hard things,

and so can you.

The friendships and experiences

that the Senior Center has

provided to me over this past 8

years are ones that I will never

forget, thank you for being part of

that.

Caregivers often think of others and “givers” by nature. Caregivers will often not reach out

when they need help or will refuse help. “What can I do to help you?” could likely be met with

“Oh I am fine, thanks for thinking of me”. To support a caregiver, consider one or more of

these ideas:

1. Drop off pre-made, ready to eat food with a planned visit or a porch drop off.

2. Offer to make a grocery run or pick up some healthy snacks before visiting.

3. Give them a break. Respite can allow a caregiver to run some errands or take a walk.

4. Learn about their care recipient’s illness to increase your ability to support them.

5. Identify available community resources. Get the details and share.

6. Spend some time just visiting. Loneliness can be a huge issue for caregivers.

7. Keep in touch. Check in regularly, don’t wait for them to call you or ask for help.

8. Send a “no response needed” text, drop a card or care package in the mail.

9. Offer to help with yard work, laundry, sweep the floors, vacuum or wash windows.

10. Run errands, plant flowers, fill bird feeders and assist with dwindling down their “to do” list.

Triad Drive Thru Drug Take Back

Friday, April 23, 8 AM-10 AM

Join the Verona area TRIAD for our spring Drug Take-Back.

The Take-Back aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible

means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public

about the potential for abuse of medications.

Why Participate?

Unused medications in homes create a public health and safety concern, because they are highly

susceptible to accidental ingestion, diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse

in the U.S. are alarmingly high. More Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number

of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the most recent National

Survey on Drug Use and Health. The majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family

and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

What to Know

Verona Police Department will accept unused, unwanted, and/or expired

prescription drug medication. Please empty all pills into a clear plastic

baggie, prior to the event, to assist with the ease of disposal. Prescription

liquids and creams must be in their original packaging material.

For safety reasons, we will not accept sharps, inhalers, or anything under pressure. Non-prescription,

personal hygiene products cannot be accepted.

If you have any questions please, contact the Verona Police Department at (608) 845-7623.
