A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear friends,When we kicked off our 250th anniversary at the start of this year, no one could have imagined what was to come. Instead of a year of celebratory events and activities, we have faced great challenges and a new virtual reality. It has not been the birthday we envisioned, but in response to the pandemic, we quickly adapted our charitable programs to help those most affected and I am immensely proud of what St. George’s Society has accomplished in these difficult times.

This report contains the record of a great year in 2019 led by Philip Warner OBE as President, Anna Titley, and the St. George’s Society team. You will find details on our growth as a Society as well as our programs and the communities we serve.

With over $625,000 in direct charitable payments in 2019, St. George’s Society upheld our 250-year mission to help people in need. We kept our seniors in their homes and gave them the means to age with dignity. We set our scholars up for success and gave them the tools to launch their careers. We provided our families a home away from home and gave them the chance to focus on each other rather than logistics. All of this and more thanks to the unyielding support of our community.

I know we all are committed to adjusting to the world as it comes while holding dear to our purpose and values. What has continued to encourage me—and for which we are all very grateful—is the dedication and support received from our leadership, staff, members, volunteers, and supporters. It is because of you that St. George’s Society will not only survive but thrive in the years to come.

For the many deserving souls in our care, may I, on their behalf, extend our deepest appreciation and thanks.

Frank E. Morgan II

Our Neighbors in NeedIn 2019, we served 100 vulnerable seniors and distributed over $500,000 in financial assistance to cover housing, home care expenses, medication, utilities and other necessities. While our beneficiaries’ backgrounds are diverse and varied, what they all have in common is their need for a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on. Whether it be the result of illness or simply outliving their resources, these individuals turn to St. George’s Society’s Beneficiary Program for support, guidance and advocacy.

They have all worked hard in a range of fields: librarians, receptionists, computer technicians, housekeepers, home health aides, a security guard, a pastry chef, a house painter, a former #101 bus driver and an 87-year old self-styled “singer, songwriter and poet”. Their housing conditions span the gamut—from a basement apartment or living with non-familial roommates to the fortunate few in affordable senior housing or assisted care facilities—but every one of our beneficiaries is happy to have a place to call home.

Thanks to the support our of community, these seniors have the best quality of care possible and their dignity is preserved.

Bronwyn’s journey with St. George’s Society began in 2010 when she and her mother Bettye*, a retired drama teacher from Wales, were referred by a former student. At the time, they were living off Bettye’s small pension and Social Security along with Bronwyn’s disability benefits. Bettye’s husband—Bronwyn’s father—had passed away the previous year and the resulting loss of income meant that they were no longer able to afford their rent and combined expenses. Very quickly, they found themselves facing eviction from the home they had lived in for over 40 years.

Upon discovering their predicament, Bettye’s former student sought out help for Bettye and Bronwyn’s case, which was subsequently referred to the Society. We were able to assist with having their rent frozen at a manageable rate and provide a monthly stipend to cover the cost.

Life for Bronywn and Bettye improved. Their days together were peaceful and loving, but now in her mid-90s, Bettye was anxious about Bronwyn’s future after her death. She expressed this worry to Julie, one of our social workers who assured her that St. George’s Society would keep Bronwyn under our umbrella

of protection. The Society would assist in attaining benefits available to disabled adults so that Bronwyn could remain living independently in the only home she’s ever known.

After Bettye’s passing at the age of 99, the Society’s social workers and Chris, a longtime legal volunteer at the Society, acted quickly to ensure that Bronwyn would remain safe and secure in her home. They were able to not only get her rent reduced, but also obtain a grant to supply Bronwyn with a new bed, mattress and dresser—a much-needed update.

Unfortunately, Bronwyn’s serenity did not last as her landlord began eviction proceedings to force her from her home. Thankfully, St. George’s Society was able to intervene and after a series of legal consultations, court advocacy and accompanying Bronwyn to numerous court dates, the eviction case was dismissed, and she retained full rights to her apartment.

Bronwyn has been a part of the St. George’s Society family for more than 10 years and thanks to the generosity of our community, she will continue to be for years to come.

MEET BRONWYN

“I don’t have the words to say how totally grateful we are for all the help you have given us these past years. I want you to know that—whatever happens in the months ahead—you will be our beacon of hope and our

cherished friends forever.” - BRONWYN, BENEFICIARY SINCE 2010

Building Pathwaysto SuccessSince its establishment in 2008, St. George’s Society’s Scholarship Program has remained committed to eliminating the financial barriers that often prevent promising college students from completing their education.

In 2019, we launched the Pathways Corporate Partners Program, an initiative that enables companies to take an active part in closing the education gap and ensuring the success and future of tomorrow’s leaders. Thanks to the commitment of our inaugural partners—

BP America and Coller Capital—five students were selected from our 2019/20 class of scholars to receive scholarships through the Scholarship Program.

As a part of our efforts to expand enrichment and engagement opportunities for our scholars, we launched a mentoring initiative with the goal of providing direction and support for success beyond graduation. Our first workshop welcomed both current scholars and alumni.

As of the end of 2019, St. George’s Society’s Scholarship Program served nearly 400 students at Lehman and Hunter Colleges totaling over $1.1 million in financial aid. Our scholars have a completion rate of nearly 98% compared to the CUNY averageof 43%.

Lucy’s path to nursing was unconventional to say the least. She had a successful career as a graphic designer in her home country of Nigeria, where she met her husband. After moving to the US, she worked as a freelance designer for the Cancer Research Institute. Hearing patients’ stories and seeing the impact of the nursing staff made a huge impression on her. She was reminded of her late father and how his death could have been avoided had he had access to quality healthcare.

“I took an account of my life and started to consider the legacy that

I wanted to leave. How could I contribute more to my community?

I kept coming back to nursing.”

As a new mother, she enrolled in Lehman College’s Nursing program. Learning an entirely new skill set while working and raising a family was not easy. Nevertheless, Lucy knew that succeeding would not only provide personal fulfillment, but also inspire her daughter to dream big.

The St. George’s Society Scholarship could not have come at a more opportune time. Having discovered that she was pregnant with her second child, she knew that her family would have to soon survive on an even more limited budget.

“Dropping out of school was not an option, so I applied for the scholarship. I’m still in shock

that I got it and to be selected as a Coller Capital Scholar as well!

My husband was shouting and dancing when we found out.”

She welcomed the newest addition to her family in August 2019 and is well on her way to becoming a nurse.

“I’m deeply humbled and sincerely thankful for this life-changing

opportunity. This has been a God send.”

For Family

In 2019, as the demand for our services grew, the number of families we helped more than doubled and we coordinated over 50 visits.

The Weatherstone Families Support Fund was established with the idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child. From arranging airport transfers and accompanying families to their first hospital consultation, to providing strollers and organizing activities during their time in New York, our assistance not only eases the financial strain, but also the stress that comes with traveling to and navigating a new city.

MEET THE DEEBASLike most siblings, Harry and his older sister Isobel know just the right way to annoy one another. Nevertheless, they love each other dearly. In 2018, their bond took on an even greater meaning when Harry was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of pediatric cancer.

After a grueling year and a half, Harry completed all of the treatments available to him in the UK. Concerned about the possibility of a relapse, his parents, Carly and Ali, decided to bring him to New York for a clinical trial that would hopefully prevent his cancer from coming back.

When the Deebas arrived, St. George’s Society was there: picking them up from JFK, taking them to their first hospital consult, and arranging outings for them on the days they didn’t have to be at the hospital. A trip to the local fire station and

a dress-up playdate were particularly fun for the whole family.

Determined to keep him on track, the Deebas braved the journey back to New York for Harry’s final round of clinical trials this past June. Although we were unable to say goodbye in person, we made sure to send them off with a celebratory cookie cake and the knowledge that they are forever a part of the St. George’s Society family.

“Having charities like St. George’s Society really help. It makes you

feel like you’re not alone through this process.”

~Carly Deeba

Celebrating Community2019 brought with it many wonderful opportunities to share our mission and message with our wider community. Events and community-led initiatives are an important part of our fundraising efforts, contributing over 40% of the operating income that allows us to provide our much-needed services. These initiatives, and so much more, made for a successful year. Thank you for helping make it a great year at St. George’s Society.

Philip Warner OBE presents a commendation to dedicated member and volunteer, Chris Evans (R)

in recognition of his invaluable assistance to the Society’s social workers. Without a doubt, Chris’

work has prevented many of our beneficiariesfrom becoming homeless.
