SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 4
Twenty years ago, our founding Headmaster Emeritus, Mr. Alan Brown, described the Southridge culture as a light-hearted place of serious purpose. For close to two decades, Mr. Brown’s sentiment has rested in the background at Southridge influencing our culture in many ways - some subtle and others more deliberate. It is indeed a source of great pride that who we say we are has remained true for the last 20 years, and that we continue to act and interact in ways that reflect the cultural heritage of our school.
This and many other fundamental aspects of our community have remained the same throughout our brief, but significant 20 year history. We still have no locks on our lockers – a tangible sign of our commitment to fostering an environment of trust and respect; our focus remains to develop well-rounded students of character who appreciate the balance of knowledge and goodness; and we continue to believe that we all hold the potential to make a positive difference in this world.
Indeed, it goes without saying that many things have changed over the years, from our buildings and grounds, to the size of our student population. We have overcome many challenges and we have celebrated some remarkable success, but through it all, the dedication, commitment and authenticity of our community has never wavered. It amazes and humbles me to see our families who continue to give so much of their time and energy to the betterment of our school; to see students going above and beyond to help a friend or a teacher, and to witness the incredible loyalty of our staff who are fiercely committed to creating a safe, caring and supportive environment in which our students can learn and grow. Evidence of our founders and their hopes for Southridge is alive and well in the hearts and minds of our community – and I believe they would be proud of the school that we have become. This year, we said goodbye to one of our founding parents and Board members, Debbie MacDougall, who was instrumental in the early days of building Southridge and who also most recently served as our Director of Community Relations. Debbie influenced Southridge in countless ways over the past two decades as our community grew into the wonderful school we have today. We were privileged to have had her as part of our community and wish her all the best as she pursues exciting new adventures.
As senior leaders, we are keenly aware of the deliberate path that was set for us 20 years ago. Since 1996, our leadership team has undertaken six comprehensive strategic planning sessions (1996, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2008, and 2013), each time reviewing the vision, mission and values to ensure we continue to align with the original aspirations of the school. Last year, we implemented a five-year strategic plan, in which we have committed to Making Southridge Even Better. This plan reaffirms our obligation to continually improve our student programs, provide greater accessibility to the school, and develop a comprehensive long term vision of our campus, all while remaining connected and engaged with the community, and with our history. I am pleased to say that significant progress has been made in accomplishing our strategic priorities and, I believe, Southridge is well-poised to boldly embark on the next 20 years with the same focus, passion and dedication that our founders had when they undertook the monumental task of creating our wonderful school.
Much has been accomplished over the last 20 years, but I cannot help but feel that the best is yet to come.
MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Mr. Drew Stephens

2014 Development of a long term vision for the evolution and growth of our campus – The Campus Master Plan

OUR BRIGHT FUTURE The best is yet to come
From May 2014 to May 2015, the Southridge community came together on multiple occasions to help develop a long-term vision for the future of our campus. In true Southridge fashion, the planning committee undertook a highly collaborative, discussion-based approach, gathering excellent insights and valuable feedback from our teachers, staff, parents, students and alumni, to help inform the plan’s development.
The goal of the campus master planning process was to outline a high-level vision for the future of our campus; to begin to conceptualize
SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 8
the buildings that would be built, the renovations that would be undertaken and the internal movements that would take place as we envision the future physical configuration of our campus over the next twenty to thirty years.
The Campus Master Plan Committee presented three versions of how our campus might look in the future. Based on our community’s feedback, the Campus Master Plan Committee revised the plans and created a final version for our Board’s approval. This version, which is truly a combination of all versions that were presented, was approved and accepted by the Board of Governors in September 2015.
Flexibility has been built into the plan to ensure the school is not overly committed to a particular direction for the next three decades – particularly as the needs of our school, and the landscape of education in general, progress and evolve.
Over the course of the coming year, the planning committee will undertake the elaborate process of identifying phases of development and a suggested timeline for Board consideration.
There is no doubt that while our roots are deep and our history continues to guide us, the future of Southridge School is bright.

A GLOWING REPORT CARD Our excellent review from the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS)
CAIS is a national organization dedicated to excellence in education. Southridge underwent its first rigorous CAIS accreditation process in November 2014 and emerged with an outstanding report. Our success is a testament to the commitment of the many people who have worked so hard and given so much to help create the school we are so lucky to be a part of today.
SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 10
Highlights
• CAIS BOARD ACCEPTED THE EVALUATION COUNCIL’S RECOMMENDATION FOR CONTINUED STATUS AS A MEMBER OF THE CORPORATION - THE HIGHEST ACCREDITATION STATUS A SCHOOL CAN ACHIEVE, MEANING THERE WERE NO MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS IN OUR REPORT.
• SOUTHRIDGE RECEIVED ONLY NINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE CAIS EVALUATION COMMITTEE. THIS IS CONSIDERED TO BE AN EXCEPTIONAL OUTCOME. WE ARE PLEASED TO REPORT THAT SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE TOWARDS ACCOMPLISHING THE RECOMMENDATIONS. WE ANTICIPATE A COMPLETION DATE OF SEPTEMBER 2016.
The CAIS visiting committee was made up of members from schools with similar missions and values. The visiting team challenges the school to reflect on how they can make improvements.
Reflections from our Visiting Committee:
• “DRIVING THROUGH THE GATES OF SOUTHRIDGE, ONE CANNOT HELP BUT BE IMPRESSED BY THE BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS AND PLAYING FIELDS, THE MODERN BUILDINGS AND THE COVERED WALKWAY THAT JOINS THEM. THIS IS BALANCED AGAINST THE VERY WARM AND RELAXED ATMOSPHERE IN THE HALLS AND THE CLASSROOMS OF BOTH THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR SCHOOLS. STUDENTS ARE HAPPY, CONFIDENT, AND CLEARLY PROUD OF THEIR SCHOOL. THEY LOOK YOU IN THE EYE, SMILE, AND OFFER SINCERE WORDS OF WELCOME WHEN THEY GREET YOU. THIS IS A SCHOOL THAT TAKES READING AND WRITING VERY SERIOUSLY. BOTH ARE TAUGHT INTENTIONALLY AND COMPREHENSIVELY ACROSS ALL GRADES. IN THE WORDS OF FOUNDING HEADMASTER ALLAN BROWN, SOUTHRIDGE CONTINUES TO BE “A LIGHTHEARTED PLACE OF SERIOUS PURPOSE”.
• “THERE IS A VERY STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY AT SOUTHRIDGE. THE LEVEL OF VOLUNTEERISM IS TRULY EXTRAORDINARY.”
• “SOUTHRIDGE IS STILL A RELATIVELY YOUNG SCHOOL HAVING JUST CELEBRATED ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY. WITH THAT YOUTH, ALSO COMES GREAT ENERGY AND COMMITMENT TO BECOMING A TRULY LEADING SCHOOL. ONE GETS THE SENSE THAT THIS IS A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY WITH TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH A SINGULAR PURPOSE.”
• “THE JUNIOR SCHOOL PYP AND MYP PROGRAMS ARE WELL ESTABLISHED, AND IN ITS FOURTH YEAR, THE SOUTHRIDGE “SENIOR SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM” HAS BEEN EMBRACED BY THE COMMUNITY AND IS BEING SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED WITH HARKNESS TABLES ACROSS A NUMBER OF DISCIPLINES. TEACHERS ARE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE POSITIVE IMPACT THE PROGRAM HAS HAD ON TEACHING AND LEARNING AND THE SHIFT FROM TEACHER CENTRED CLASSROOMS TO MORE STUDENT CENTRED CLASSROOMS WITH STUDENTS COMING FULLY PREPARED TO CLASS AND READY TO ENGAGE IN MUCH DEEPER THINKING.”
• “THE COMMITMENT TO SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AT SOUTHRIDGE ON SO MANY LEVELS IS TRULY EXEMPLARY. THERE IS NO QUESTION SOUTHRIDGE IS COMMITTED TO THE PROMOTION OF 21ST CENTURY LEARNING IN ITS STUDENTS FRAMED BY THE FOUR PILLARS OF ITS PROGRAMS: ATHLETICS, THE ARTS, SERVICE LEARNING AND THE PYP, MYP, AND SENIOR SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAM (SSEP).”

OUR STUDENTS Future Leaders After 20 years, students continue to be at the centre of who we are and what we do.
Alumni Reflection: Rohin Buttar Class of 2015
Rohin Buttar was a Grade 12 student at Southridge when he was honoured with the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in March, 2015. Rohin received the award for his commitment to providing education to children in Kenya and finding innovative ways to encourage small business with social impact. Specifically, Rohin has launched a micro-finance initiative to provide funding to local entrepreneurs for community based businesses in India. His company, MicRoh Finance is focussed on providing interest free loans that assist or help start businesses.
“Unfair circumstances lead to many people suffering every day. Living in a prosperous country, many of us say we are going to “be the change”; however those words are rarely followed by action. This isn’t because people aren’t compassionate and thoughtful, I think people want a simple way to help each other, but they get lost in the “how?” MicRoh Financing can change that. We have built a sustainable model that provides startup capital and business advisory services, to open doors for those who need it most. With 100% of every dollar donated going to the program.”
Living in a prosperous country, many of us say we are going to “be the change”; however those words are rarely followed by action.”

Alumni Reflection: Rob LevyGrad 2006
Twenty years ago, the year that Southridge first opened, I was enrolled in Grade 2 and my teacher was Mrs. Raber. Ten years later, I went on to graduate with many of my original classmates.
Upon graduating from Southridge, I completed my BSc. Honours in Economics at the University of Victoria. I then pursued a Master’s in Economics with a concentration in Finance from Carleton University, and subsequently returned to the Lower Mainland to begin my career at Border Gold Corp as a precious metal trader.
I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to attend Southridge. The school provided me with a safe, caring and positive environment in which to learn and grow, pursue my passions and try new things.
“Southridge gave me more than an outstanding education – the Southridge community taught me about the importance of giving back and contributing to something bigger than myself.”
It taught me about balancing academics with extra-curriculars. I was a proud member of the Varsity Rugby Team for three years (Go Storm!) and went on to play rugby at the University of Victoria.
Most importantly, it was the people I met and the friendships I developed that made my time at Southridge so memorable. Even now, nearly ten years after graduation, the friends I met while I was there continue to be some of my best.
I am also honoured to be a founding board member of the Southridge School Alumni Association, where I currently serve as Chair. Organizing and attending school and alumni events, is one way that I can give back and support the Southridge community, a community that has meant so much to me and my family over the last twenty years.
2014/15 HIGHLIGHT: SOUTHRIDGE KIDS’ LIT CHAMPS TAKE ON WORLD!Southridge’s four-person team of reading enthusiasts – Grade 7 student Serina St. James, Sarah Tisdale and Armaan Randhawa, and Grade 6 student Stephanie Lee – traveled to New Britain, Connecticut, where they competed at the World Cup of Reading. The foursome qualified for the international competition, after winning a national Kids’ Lit Quiz title in Toronto.

STUDENTS OF CHARACTER Making A Difference
Southridge students, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, make a difference through various service activities and projects. We believe that it is through service that we become our highest and best selves.
Community and Overseas Service:
Service at Southridge is both local and international in scope. We recognize our roles as members of the local community and as responsible global citizens. Exploring a variety of opportunities allows our students to discover how and where they can best contribute.
Our Senior School partners with the following major local service partners:
Semiahmoo House Society Surrey Urban Mission God’s Little Acre Options WE Kinvig Surrey Parks & Recreation The Residence @ Morgan Heights Project Backpack Sources Food Bank
Junior School Acts of Service:
Our Junior Students make sandwiches every week, and support many worthwhile causes. This year, we saw many individual student projects and the grade 7 Making a Difference projects. We celebrated the addition of the Design Cycle into our PYP Exhibition. We remained a connected member of the broader community as we celebrated the Terry Fox Run, the Ride to Conquer Cancer, Cops for Cancer, and the World Partnership Walk. Above all, our students continued their outward focus on considering the needs of others and how they can make a difference.

10 Years Running!
This year, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of TREK (Teens Running for Every Kid). TREK is an annual fundraiser that is organized by Senior School students to raise funds for a cause. This year, this initiative raised funds for under privileged children in Guatemala through Project Somos.
Kids helping kids: Project Somos
Last year was Southridge’s third time volunteering in Guatemala at Project Somos. Project Somos is a non-profit organization that works to build a Children’s Village model in Guatemala. In early 2011, Project Somos co-founders Heather Knox and Greg Kemp took 145 acres of newly donated land in the Guatemalan highlands and began work to establish a children’s village and an organic farm to partially support it. Today Project Somos is home to families, the land is transformed, and the lives of many young Guatemalans have been positively impacted.
Last year, twenty students and three teachers from Southridge volunteered to haul dirt, make adobe blocks, assist in the preschool, offer programming for the kids in the afternoon, sort and label children’s books, organize a Kids’ Afternoon for the local children, help with food prep in the kitchen, paint the Learning Centre, lay and grout the stones in the Gathering Place, and plant a flower garden in front of the Learning Centre.

ATHLETICS
At Southridge, we believe students develop important character, leadership and personal and practical skills through participation in athletics. Involvement in athletics allows our students to develop a deeper connection with Southridge and we believe the opportunity to represent their school fosters a sense of spirit. We believe that participation in athletics assists students to develop an appreciation for the importance of life-long physical activity and well-being.

OUR COMMUNITY Leaving a Legacy: Wayne & Jan Peace
For Wayne and Jan Peace, the most meaningful way to make a difference in the world is to dedicate time and energy to a place that has made a difference in their lives. Since 1999, when their daughter Taris entered sixth grade, that place has been Southridge School.
“I’ve worn many hats at Southridge”, said Wayne, reminiscing about the years he’s spent engaged in a variety of roles supporting the school. Roles ranging from web master publishing the Southridge Wednesday in its early years, to sitting on the committee that started the laptop
SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 42
program, to Chair of the Governance Committee, the Education Committee, supporting the Gala, and today, as a member of the Board of Governors.
“I’ve also assembled several Harkness tables, which is pretty neat; knowing the students will sit around those tables learning, challenging, and engaging with each other in the creation of knowledge – becoming people who will make a difference in the world.”
The combination of community and academics, connected with the school’s values was precisely what drew the Peace family to Southridge and made them feel like they had found a special place for their daughter. In fact, even before Taris officially entered the school, the family knew Southridge was a remarkable place.
“Taris was actually first interviewed by Alan Brown when she was in third grade. And she interviewed him too! She came prepared with a bunch of questions for him – he was quite impressed.”
“But they weren’t accepting new students that year; so by the time she started in sixth grade, we had been following and keeping an eye on the school for a few years. We were really excited and humbled to join the community and to contribute.”
Since then, they’ve not only witnessed the extraordinary impact that Southridge has had on Taris, but Wayne and Jan too have personally felt the benefits of being part of this tightknit, caring and giving community. It is for this very personal reason, the Peace family, through the school’s planned giving program, has committed to leaving a Legacy Gift of $1 million to Southridge.
For the family, the gift represents more than just an opportunity to leave a legacy for the school that helped shape their daughter into the kind, confident and accomplished young woman she is today; it’s an opportunity to plant a seed that will grow into something for future generations to benefit from.
“It’s about giving back to more than just the school and the students. This gift is our way of making a difference in the world. Through giving to Southridge, we’re supporting a place that is educating future leaders and future difference makers. I can’t think of a better way to give back and make a difference in the world than to volunteer and give philanthropically to Southridge.”
A legacy gift is a gift with lasting meaning – when you leave a gift to Southridge School, you are leaving a gift that helps build a better world.
For more information about leaving your own legacy at Southridge, please contact Christiane Hodson, [email protected].

A HISTORY-MAKING GIFT Vandekerkhove Family
In our 20th Anniversary year, history was made at Southridge School. At our 20th Anniversary Great Gatsby Gala, Mr. William Vandekerkhove, a current Southridge parent, and Chairman, CEO and Owner of the Super Save Group of Companies, made the single largest donation in our School’s history – a gift of $200,000.
This very generous donation funded a number of items at the school, including a new school bus, replacing our former large diesel bus, which had been purchased second-hand several years prior and was no longer reliable. Mr. Vandekerkhove’s donation was also used towards technology purchases. His gift allowed us to move into the next phase of education technology at Southridge, by purchasing tablets for our teachers in the spring and rolling out our new tablet program last September.
Mr. Vandekerkhove made this gift simply because he loves Southridge. His hope is that his donation will inspire other parents to come forward and support the school in as big a way they can, and in a way that is meaningful to them.
SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 48
THE GIFT OF TIMEVolunteer Reflection: Jacquie Lougheed
My commitment to volunteering at Southridge began before the doors of the school opened. As a founding parent, my first task was soliciting signatures of support to approve the school when it was still in the planning process. Hard to believe that was more than 20 years ago – and all three of my children have graduated from Southridge since then!
Southridge has played such a wonderful and important role in our family’s life. For me, I was so grateful to have the opportunity to share in my children’s school community. From visits to the pumpkin patch, Teddy Bear picnics, Country Fairs, and graduations (Junior School and Senior School), I felt so privileged to not only experience the school alongside my children, but to build relationships with other members of the community with whom I shared the common goal of supporting our children’s success.
The Southridge community is such a special one, and I’m proud of the fact that while many things have changed over the last 20 years, the school’s commitment to service and giving back has not. The same spirit with which the founding parents embraced the school’s creation continues to be seen and felt today. While I am no longer a current Southridge parent,
I will always feel like a member of the community. The school that helped shape my children into the kind, intelligent, thoughtful and determined adults they are today, also left a huge impression on me, and for this I will always be thankful.

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR Mr. Doug Wilson
To our students, twenty years may seem like an eternity, yet to many of us it is the proverbial “blink of an eye.” How amazing, then, to see the outstanding success of Southridge in such a relatively short period of time.
Imagine, only twenty short years ago a group of like-minded, motivated and keenly ambitious families created the foundation for what we enjoy today: a strong, vibrant, successful school community. Southridge is in the enviable position of financial strength; healthy enrollment; very low and continuously decreasing debt; a growing endowment that funds a comprehensive and expanding financial aid program; outstanding student programming; top provincial academic rankings; clean, well maintained buildings and grounds; and a vision of modest and thoughtful facilities growth through our campus master plan. These achievements are the result of committed and engaged families, strong administrative leadership, a dedicated faculty and staff, and insightful guidance and decision making.
The families of twenty years ago understood that creating an environment where every spirit soars is what enables our students to make a difference in the world, and without a doubt, Southridge continues to honour that tradition. The achievements of our students, outlined in these pages, are proof of the excellence we see in all four pillars of the school: academics, arts, athletics, and service. These four pillars have always been the foundation of our programs and they are as important today as they were in the past, and will continue to be in the future.
What also began more than twenty years ago is the tradition of strong school guidance and governance. We have been fortunate to inherit a legacy of commitment and dedication by groups of individuals who always looked to the future in setting the strategic direction of Southridge. Recently, we passed along our sincere thanks and said goodbye to Elizabeth Laird who leaves the current Board after four years of astute contributions to the discussions and decisions. Also this past year, Rachael Lawson and Preet Brar joined our Board of Governors and we have already been the beneficiaries of their thoughtful and insightful involvement. Once again, the actions of the past twenty years continue to guide us towards a bright future.
As you read through this report, remember how far Southridge has come in twenty years. From a vacant farm field in the relative “middle of nowhere” to the vibrant successful school it is today, one can only imagine where it will be twenty years from now. One thing is certain, the founders, past families and faculty, and current school community members have all helped prepare Southridge to continue its goal of preparing students to make a difference in the world.
SOUTHRIDGE ANNUAL REPORT 2014-1520 Years of Making a Difference 50
MESSAGE FROM TREASURERMr. Nick NuraneyThe Board continues to be very proud of our sound financial structure, well-run Finance Office and sustainable financial model. This is a priority that continues to be of utmost significance to us. As we work to Make Southridge Even Better through enhanced programs, facilities and opportunities for our students, we appreciate that we also have a responsibility to ensure our tuition fees remain reasonable and competitive, our debt stays under control and we enhance our endowment program.
This year, our operating revenue, including government grants and auxiliary services, was 2.3% higher than expected due to higher government grants and less attrition. Our operating expenses were under budget by 3.2%. I am pleased to see a continued commitment to fiscal management by our Senior Leadership Team, who have a genuine understanding of the sacrifice and financial investment our families are making in order to provide their children with a Southridge School education. As of June 30, 2015, our school debt stood at $3,940,000 and our endowment funds at $1,909.078.
We have been able to keep tuition increase for 2015/16 at 2.0% again, all while enhancing our programs and planning for our future development.
In completing our 20th year, I am proud to see that Southridge continues to be one of the top schools in BC. In our short history, we have built a stunning school with outstanding facilities, exceptional educational, arts and athletics programs, and service opportunities for our students to learn and grow and become contributing members of society. This is all due to the clear vision and mission set for us by the founding parents of Southridge, and thanks to the continued leadership and commitment of our community.
I am proud and confident in our financial position, as Southridge embarks upon the next 20 years of its journey.

For 20 years, the Southridge community has continued to support our school and students in remarkable and tangible ways. Thank you to all our generous donors and volunteers for your support of our Advancement activities throughout the year. Indeed, 2014/2015 was a year that won’t soon be forgotten at Southridge.
The Great Gatsby Gala was a great success, selling out early and raising more than $180,000. The theme was a tribute to our 20th Anniversary and funds raised were directed towards new flooring throughout the Junior School, weight room equipment for the Senior School, a wireless intercom system for our tech teams as well as an electric gator for our facilities crew. Thank you to all our sponsors, item donors, attendees and volunteers who made this night such a meaningful and successful event. History was also made on the evening of the gala when Mr. William Vandekerkhove, a Southridge parent, made the single largest donation in our School’s history – a gift of $200,000. His generous donation funded two major projects at the school (see full story in the Annual Report). Thank you to Mr. Vandekerkhove for this momentous and generous gift.
The Country Fair was also a great success! $47,000 was raised that day, half of which was invested in our endowment funds and the remainder used to purchase capital items at the school. Allocating Country Fair revenue in this way is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to both our greater community and our own school community. My most sincere appreciation to everyone for their continued support of this event – the one event that has been “all hands on deck” for 20 years. Our Legacy Giving Campaign for new families was also a great success. Once again, the vast majority of our new families made multi-year pledges totaling more than $700,000. The money we raise through this campaign is used to pay down our school’s debt, which has been reduced to under $4 million from a peak of $18 million. Thank you to all the families that have made significant and generous commitments in support of this campaign year after year! Through the EveryONE Annual Campaign, we raised over $163,000! This allowed us to purchase all the items on our wish list as well as invest an additional $92,000 in our endowment funds. In fact, the Alan Brown Memorial Endowment Fund is now generating enough interest revenue to fund a partial bursary for a new Senior School student. Thank you to everyone who so generously gave to this campaign. Your gifts are truly making a difference. Special mention must be made to our amazing volunteers. In our CAIS evaluation report, in fact, a special commendation was made by the visiting committee about our strong culture of volunteerism. For 20 years, members of our community have selflessly given their time for the betterment of us all. Thank you to everyone for your commitment to Southridge and your many, many contributions as volunteers this year. As you can see on the pages within this year’s Annual Report, we have included some historical data and information about our donation programs and events. If you have any questions about this information, do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
