1. Foreword by the President

This year, we found 768 compatible bonemarrow and umbilical cord blood donors forpatients that require a stem cell transplant but do nothave a compatible family member. Thanks to thework of the REDMO, it has been possible to carry out404 bone marrow and umbilical cord bloodtransplants in Spain, during 2010.

During our annual awareness campaign, we were able to display the future plans of a huge number of patients. The issue of cancer, which is often a taboo in our society, was brought to people’s attention simply by placing a piece of tape on a wall. On each piece of tape, a patient had written their plans, their hopes or their fears. In this way, and through reams

This year, 2010, the José Carreras Foundationagainst Leukaemia has taken one of its mostimportant steps in recent years: together with theCatalan government, it has successfully establishedthe José Carreras Research Institute againstLeukaemia.

and reams of cotton, we were able to express HOPE.

Although we are convinced that physical information is fundamental to fully understand haematological diseases and their treatments, this year we have also created a range of digital informative materials which have allowed the public to conveniently access serious and technical information in a practical way.

Thank you very much

The centre will be without precedent and willcombine the work and drive of researchers from allover the world with the latest technologies to win thebattle against leukaemia. We have created it toimprove the quality of life of the patients butabove all it was created in the hope of findinga 100% definitive cure for leukaemia. TheFoundation has set about the process of turning theseambitions into reality. We have established the firstresearch centre in Spain and one of only a few in the Thank you very much.research centre in Spain, and one of only a few in theworld, to be exclusively focused on leukaemia andother haematological malignancies.

I would also like to highlight, the REDMOprogramme, which is another service we provide forpatients.

E l i f h b f b d In 1991, The Foundation created the official BoneMarrow Donor Registry in Spain (REDMO). TheRegistry was established to ensure that noleukaemia patient would be without thepossibility of finding a transplant, even if theydid not have a compatible family member. For 3 out of 4 that require a transplant, thedonation of bone marrow from an unrelateddonor offers the only possibility of a cure.

The complete development of the Registry and itsintegration with the public network of the Nationalhealth system came with the signing of the firstframework agreement in 1994 between theFoundation and the Ministry of Health. TheFoundation has signed collaborationFoundation has signed collaborationagreements with all the AutonomousCommunities in order to coordinate thepromotion of the donation and to ensure thecorrect functioning of the donor searchprocess.

Often, a patient is required to undergo a bonemarrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. As aconsequence, patients are hospitalized forprolonged periods. In many cases, thehospital is far from their home and in such

pcases it is very important for them to be ableto count on the support and company of theirfamily.

The Foundation provides 6 welfare flats which meetthe needs of those patients and families who have loweconomic means or have to travel a long distancefrom their home (based on the report of a socialworker at the hospital in which the patient isreceiving treatment). The flats are located close togthe main transplant centres in Barcelona,Hospital Clinic; Sant Pau Hospital; Vall d’HebronHospital; Bellvitge Hospital; and Germans Trias iPujol Hospital (Badalona).

During 2010, we have provided a temporaryhome for 25 patients and their families in ourwelfare flats. These families have come from arange of places including Las Palmas, Asturias,Orense, Andorra, Mexico, and several regions ingCatalunya (Torredembarra, Sabadell, Montornés delVallés, Centelles, Cerviá de Ter, Vic, Mollet delVallés, Palamós and Malgrat de Mar).

Many patients who undergo an ambulatorytransplant reside in the same city as the location ofthe transplant or an adjacent town However it is

the transplant, or an adjacent town. However, it isoften the case that patients live too far from thehospital to reach it in a case of emergency. For thisreason, patients frequently stay for an extra period oftime in the Foundation’s flats, despite being wellenough to go home, in order to keep the hospitalwithin range.

Since 2009, the José Carreras Foundation hasprovided patients in Barcelona with the first flat in
