Board discusses diversityBy LINDSEY FRANCO

Alligator Writer

TALLAHASSEE - The Board of Governors, which oversees Florida's 11 public universities, discussed two issues ranking high on UF's agendaThursday.

At its monthly meeting, the Board reviewed aseries of programs aimed to bring economicallydisadvantaged students to the State UniversitySystem.

"Sometimes kids just need that spark to be lit,"said Craig Fletcher, the coordinator of the CollegeReach Out Program at Tallahassee CommunityCollege.

A four-member panel consisting of CROPteachers and coordinators emphasized CROP'ssuccess and importance in Florida schools:Programs such as CROP, which aims to increaseblack and Hispanic enrollment, are part of a state-wide effort to boost the number of minorities instate universities.

These programs are supported by UFPresident Bernie Machen, who has implementedinitiatives for need-based financial aid, and Gov.Jeb Bush, who created the Access and DiversityCommission.

Two students reinforced CROP's success bytelling their own personal success stories thanks

to the program."I think this is a program that should go on

forever and ever," said Leston Green, one of theprogram's students and a journalism senior atFlorida A & M University.

"This country is on the verge of facinga substantial shortage of physicians."

' Michael WhitcombAAMC's senior vice president

for medical education

The Board, meeting on the FAMU campus, de-voted the latter half of the meeting to its policy fornew medical schools.

A lobbyist from the Association of AmericanMedical Colleges addressed the Board and aimedto cut through what he called the "great deal ofcomplexity" regarding the medical school issueby discussing the strategic expansion of medicaleducation.

"This country is on the verge of facing a sub-stantial shortage of physicians," said lobbyistMichael Whitcomb, AAMC's senior vice presi-dent for medical education.

Both the University of Central Florida andFlorida International University have begun rais-ing money to build medical schools, somethingUF officials oppose.

SG budget woes overBy LYNDSEY LEWIS

Alligator Writerllewisealligator.org

Two weeks after an error-riddled budget first reached theStudent Senate, the body passedits revised version at an emer-gency meeting Thursday.

The budget, which is fundedentirely by student money, allo-cates $553,020 toward 61 StudentGovernment-funded organiza-tions.

Thursday's meeting markedthe fifth time senators haveviewed the organizational bud-gets. During the Feb. 14 Senatemeeting, when senators weredue to vote on the budgets for thefirst time, numerous errors werediscovered in several of the or-ganizational budgets -- and themeeting ground to a halt.

An official from the SG FinanceOffice took responsibility for the

majority of errors. When the Senate held an

emergency meeting to present arevised copy of the budgets lastTuesday, independent StudentBody treasurer candidate SusanHenriques discovered anotherbudgetary error.

It was remedied by the timethe Senate took

Student its first voteGOV43inm nt on the revised

budget, andsenators unanimously passed itthrough a final vote at Thursday'smeeting.

Although some senatorsargued their budget copies con-tained the same error Henriqueshad previously pointed out,Senate President John Boyles saidthey had simply received inaccu-rate papers.

"The budget numbers are cor-rect, so if yours is incorrect, pleasejust strike through it," he said.

sue facing the UF campus to be moving into the Top10 public colleges nationwide rankings. Because theuniversity is not living up to its potential, issues suchas poverty in the east side of Gainesville, as wellas student activism, are not being adequately ad-dressed, Hernandez said.

"We should ask more of our leaders," Hernandezsaid. "We should ask more of our Student Government, and we should ask more of ourselves as Gators."

Boyles said the declining rate of African Americanenrollment at UF and the low number of female lead-ers on campus showed that Student Government wasnot reaching out to students enough.

"What matters is that every student feels that theSwamp is their home," Boyles said.

The crowd, mostly Swamp supporters clad in theirparty's blue T-shirts, cheered after Boyles' responses. The Unite supporters, wearing their red T-shirts,stomped and shouted for their candidate. About 90people attended the debate in Reitz Union Room 282,where the Student Senate usually meets.

When Boyles, the Senate president, asked Hernandez,a student senator, why he did not present his claims onSG diversity to Senate, the Unite candidate bristled.

"It's understandable you would say a pithy commentrather than understanding what's actually going on,"Hernandez said.

The remains were turned overto Anthony Falsetti, a UF profes-sor and director of the C.A. PoundHuman Identification Laboratory,Faulk said.

"Professor Falsetti is going todouble-check if the remains areSmetzer's," Faulk said. "We'realmost 100 percent sure the bonesbelong to him."

EditorialSG elections are usually pretty straightforward, but this

semester is different. We don't know why, but we've noticed significantly less

enthusiasm for this election than most others. Halfheartedparty platforms were issued too late in the game, andTurlington looks oddly bereft of party loyalists.

We wonder if anybody really wants to win this one.It almost makes us wish for last year's election season,

when Progress, Gator and Unite supporters in Turlingtonfrantically competed for our attention along with campuspreachers and the Iron Fist.

Oh well. With all the time that we've saved from not having to

throw away stacks of party fliers, we've been able to puttogether another edition of our very own.

Darts & LaurelsWe begin by throwing out a way-to-do-your-own-thing

LAUREL to all of the independent candidates running in thisupcoming SG election. They have spurned the traditionalconfines of party politics to promote their own ideals, andwe respect that.

We're not going to sugarcoat it; they've got their work cutout for them.

Getting elected with a major party is tough enough.Getting elected without the financial and social support thatparties offer may well be impossible.

But that's why we love them. They have chosen the roadless traveled.

And that makes all the difference. We continue by offering a we-know-we've-had-our-dif-

ferences-but-good-work-anyway LAUREL to our friendJoe Goldberg. This Tuesday, the UF University CurriculumCommittee agreed to extend drop/add to five days insteadof four in the coming semesters. Goldberg isn't actually onthe committee, but he was instrumental in bringing the issueto the committee's attention.

"I learned about the policy because students, includingJoe Goldberg, alerted me to their concerns on this issue, and Iagreed with them," said UP Provost Janie Foule.

But it seemed like Goldberg was avoiding taking credit forthe change. "She really kind of took it and ran with it. Sheunderstood it was an important issue for students," he said.

This may actually be the first time in university history anSG official hasn't tried to horn in on the good press.

We are officially shocked and awed. And though it might pain us to say it, on this issue at least,

Goldberg has done a good job.Next, we dispense an unmitigated we-know-your-moth-

er-taught-you-better-than-that DART to Jared Jacobson ofGainesville for his involvement in the heartless theft of stereoequipment from already deprived students.

On Feb. 2 and Feb. 14, more than 40 cars were burglarizedin Towne Parc, Regency Oaks and University Glades.

The apartment complexes are heavily student-occupied.Police officers showed up at Jacobson's apartment try-

ing t6 get information about another suspect in the thefts.Jacobson wasn't home, but his roommate let the policeinside. They discovered the stereo equipment inside theapartment.

Apparently, Jacobson never learned the first rule of thiev-ing: Don't keep stolen goods at home. Especially when yourroommate is trying to bust you.

On that note, we finish with a thanks-for-the-helpLAUREL to Jared Jacobson's roommate for, perhaps inadver-tently, giving the police a lead on the burglary investigation.

We don't know what he was thinking when he invited thepolice in, but we're glad he did.

Harvard president didn't deserve scornnyone wondering whether political correctnessstifles academic discourse needs to look no furtherthan the case of Larry Summers.

In 2001, Summers was tapped to become president ofHarvard University.

His resignation announcement earlier this week sig-naled the end of one of the most nauseating chapters ofintellectual dishonesty in recent memory.

Summers was often known more for his trademarklack of tact than his significant personal and academicaccomplishments.

It was this straightforwardness that so often put theHarvard president in hot water. But it also underscoredthe hypocrisy of American academia. At Harvard, thevery people who professed to be defenders of free speechand academic inquiry condemned Summers, for his out-spokenness and controversial viewpoints.

For example, there was the matter of Cornel West,a professor of African American studies and religion.Shortly after Summers took over at Harvard, he chidedWest for focusing more on producing a rap CD than onproducing genuine academic research. Summers alsosuggested that there might be some degree of grade in-flation in West's classes. At that time, more than half ofall grades received from Harvard were A's.

West's response? He angrily left Harvard for Princeton, apparently un-

able to stomach even a modest reproach. So much for constructive criticism. In January 2005, Summers once again found himself

in the hornets' nest. At an economics meeting, Summerssuggested that innate statistical differences between menand women might account for a greater proportion ofmen in the upper echelons of science and engineering.

Summers was roundly and immediately criticized for

his remarks, despite the fact thatthere is some empirical evidenceto support his idea.

He was also wrongly attrib-uted as saying that all men havea naturally higher aptitude for

Tom Durrenberger science and engineering than allEditorial Notebook women. Because of this, he was

[email protected] branded a bigot and a sexist byhis intellectual colleagues.

But some in the Harvard com-munity rose to his defense. When the Harvard Crimsonasked whether Summers' remarks were out of line, psy-chologist Steven Pinker was incredulous.

"Good grief," he said. "Shouldn't everything be with-in the pale of legitimate academic discourse.? That's thedifference between a university and a madrassah."

Pinker went onto say that Summers'hypothesis couldhave been a justifiable topic at a psychology conference.

In trying to defend political correctness, many in aca-demia forgot that the truth, by its very nature, can neverbe insulting. The point isn't that Larry Summers wasnever wrong, but that, often, there was the possibilitythat he was actually right.

Summers' troubled presidency at Harvard is a strik-ing example of how the academic climate in the nation'sleading universities stifles discourse. Larry Summers'curiosity, impertinence and willingness to broach contro-versy represents everything that is right with academia. It is a shame that he was so ruthlessly silenced by thosewho disagreed with him, and we are all worse off for it.

But the lesson of the Summers presidency remainsclear: In modern academia, as in-Soviet Russia, the nailthat sticks up gets hammered down.

Protesting funerals a disturbing new trend for Kansas churchFree speech can be a funny thing. It is one

of the most sacred principles our nationis founded on, but more often than not,

it is utilized in disgusting ways. When thishappens, there is nothing that can be done,as the Bill of Rights provides no guidelines forspeech in extremely poor taste.

One of the basest abusers of our nationalright to free speech is Fred Phelps, a 76-year-old preacher from Topeka, Kan. The leaderof the Westboro Baptist Church, Phelps hasfocused his religious career around hate-driven rhetoric against homosexuals. Whilea Baptist preacher lambasting gays is far fromextraordinary, the lengths to which Phelps andhis congregation go would make the foundingfathers shake their heads.

The Westboro Baptist Church's primaryforums for protest are funerals. Throughoutthe Midwest, wherever there is a prominentmourning or death, Phelps and his congrega-tion make their opinions known. The historyof this tasteless host includes the funerals ofFrederick Rogers and Coretta Scott King. The

Letters to the Editor

group has also publicly criticized the victims ofthe recent Sago Mine collapse in West Virginia. What is Phelps' issue with these deceased in-dividuals? That they in some way or anothersupported homosexuality, if only by not join-ing the congregation in their diatribes?

Protesting at the occasional prominentfigure's funeral or issuing statements follow-ing any larige-scale catastrophe in this nationcould be chalked up as publicity tactics forthis demented little group - protesting Mr.Rogers' funeral simply because they claim that"God hates fags" is inarguably ridiculous.

Regardless of the First Amendment, FredPhelps and his congregation have recentlycrossed an inviolable line. They have begunprotesting at the funerals of soldiers who havedied in Iraq.

Not celebrities who have died ofold age,but young men and women who have mettheir ends violently and tragically.

Carrying signs with cruel slogans suchas "Thank God for lEDs" and "Fag Army,"Phelps' followers destroy what little closure

Swamp only represents Greek interests in SG electionIt seems that your editorial board has missed an inter-

esting phenomenon concerning the upcoming elections. The Swamp Party failed to slate a single freshman or

sophomore candidate that is not a member of a Greek-letterorganization. Nine of the eleven candidates come from theInterfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council alone.

Does Swamp not feel freshmen or sophomores with-out Greek letters are good enough -to be in StudentGovernment? Or maybe those non-Greek candidates justdon't have houses that are willing to cut deals on their be-half. Don't worry upperclassmen, there's not much hopefor you either. Fifteen of the 22 upperclassmen candidatesare Greek-affiliated as well.

Meanwhile, Swamp's message is to represent the stu-dents; perhaps that was one of the lines they didn't mean tocopy and paste from the other party's platform.

This is all just politics as usual, though. The Greeks inpower are protecting their legacy positions and hidingbehind the face of John Boyles, a man masquerading as theface of the average student.

Poor Mr. Boyles, it seems like your secret is out.Andrew Marcus,

Throwing insultsat funeral motorcades simply because thedeceased within were average, reasonableAmericans is very nearly the basest of humanindignities still legal in this nation. Not sur-prisingly, 14 states throughout the region ter-rorized by Phelps are attempting to put a stopto his malice. Each state has either passed or isreviewing legislation that bans protests withina certain distance of active funerals.

Laws such as these seem to be constitu-tionally invalid. The speech of Phelps and hisgroup could not even be deemed obscene un-

Jared Hernandez has turned his back on virtuallyevery organization that he has been involved with, includ-ing the Interfraternity Council, his law school mock trialteam and the Spanish American Law Student Association.Jared's actions have proven that he will respectively bash, abandon and abuse the funds of any group for his ownselfish means.

UF administration doesn't care about parking woesThe recent discussions circulating among UF adminis-

tration regarding an across-the-board increase in parkingrestrictions to 5:30 p.m., as well as discussion suggesting

der current Supreme Court precedent. What the Westboro Baptist Church does is

by no means acceptable. The behavior of theorganization infringes upon the decency ofAmericans as a whole - spraying politicallyloaded speech over what should be a quiet, private affair. It is times like these, when a verysmall minority abuses its rights, that the samerights become slowly curtailed for the sake ofsociety as a whole.

That members of any religious organiza-tion would behave this way toward dead sol-diers is disgusting. It seems that the membersof the Westboro Baptist Church have gotten socaught up in their anti-homosexual fervor thatthey have forgotten what the Bible promisesto individuals like themselves. When thesebigots age and die, there will be no protests.Neither will there be the strumming of harpsor some ludicrous ray of light shining downupon their corpses. If anything, it is likely thata more incendiary experience awaits them.

Scott Gilton is a decision and information sci-ences senior. His column appears on Fridays.

the commuter lot become solely graduate/professionalparking, are endemic of the same cyclical issue: The ad-ministration really doesn't care about the student opinionon an issue that is universally frustrating, not just at UF buton college campuses in general.

Of course, many of us have had to deal with the student-directed unfriendliness - or maybe just unfriendliness ingeneral - of UF.Parking Services.

When you sell more than twice the number of decalsas spaces on campus, disaster is inevitable. However, theproblem is solvable. Instead of "strategic planning" involv-ing new buildings and upgrading the Reitz Union, howabout following UCF's strategic plan and making parkinggarages a priority?

Instead, our administrators would rather just increaserestrictions, an action surely to boost only resentment to-ward themselves and alienating Parking Services from everbeing viewed positively by the student body.

I have faith that the Student Government executivesand senators will make this a priority - fighting to givestudents a stronger voice on the issue and refusing to beshut out of the decision-making process.

Noah's status unc ear for AlabamaN DONOVAN BLAMED UF'SLACK OF EXPERIENCE FORCLOSE LOSSES.

His face resembled someone whohad just gone 15 rounds in a prizefight, rather than 38 minutes in a college bas-

ketball game. His face was bleeding, his lip was cut

and his tooth was lying on the floor infront of him. UF power forward JoakimNoah could handle no more. And itremains to be seen if he will be able tohandle anymore in the near future.

Noah underwent surgery lateWednesday night to stitch up his lipand to fix the displaced tooth. He willbe questionable when the reeling No. 12Gators travel to face Alabama (15-10, 8-

5 Southeastern Conference) on Sundayafternoon.

"I don't know where he's at rightnow," said UF coach Billy Donovan onThursday. "He had some surgery yester-day. I have not yet seen him today

"Everything went well in terms ofgetting his tooth put back in place. Ithink a lot is going to depend on howthe healing process goes. No one hassaid to me he can or cannot play."

UF hasn't lost three straight gamessince January 2002, when Georgia,Arkansas and Kentucky handed theGators consecutive defeats.

All three of those losses came by 5points or less, including one in overtime- a sting the Gators felt again after their4-point loss at Arkansas on Saturday fol-lowed by their fall to No. 10 Tennesseeby 4 at home on Wednesday.

This season, UF (22-5, 8-5 SEC) hasn'tlost a game by more than 6 points, andfour of its five defeats have come in theclosing.seconds of games. Donovan hasblamed UF's lack of experience as thereason why the Gators haven't been ableto get the job done in clutch situations.

"Based on what do we deserve to-winthose games?" Donovan said. "Based onwhat? Three, four sophomores and afreshman? That doesn't give us a right."

He also said that sophomoresTaurean Green and Corey Brewercouldn't be expected to handle thepressures that come along with closeballgames, simply because they haven'tbeen in those specific situations before.

"There's not a magic formula thatsays, all of a sudden, Taurean Greenhas 30 experiences under his belt at thepoint guard position with the score tiedwith 25 seconds," Donovan said. "It'shappened to him two times in his entirecareer. Why would anyone expect thathe's going to have that level of experi-ence and know exactly what to do?

"Why would Corey Brewer, as asophomore? It's the first time he's everinbounded the ball with 20 seconds togo against pressure his entire career,"Donovan said. "How can I expect himnot to make a mistake?"

And with the conference and NCAAtournaments rapidly approaching, thequestion that remains to be answered is:Will the Gators handle such a situationdifferently the next time around?

"I don't know if they will," Donovansaid. "Like I said, we have to go throughthis . I'm ndt really concerned. Forme, it's about the growth and develop-ment of our team and our kids gettingbetter."

LaPorta maymiss tourney

By BRYAN JONESAlligator Writer

Matt LaPorta is excited about the opportunity toface his good friend, Missouri pitcher Max Scherzer, when Scherzer takes the mound against the No. 1Gators tonight.

"I talked to him two nights ago," LaPorta said."He was just telling me he was going to come atme. He said, 'I want to see if you can hit my fastball- power vs. power and see who wins."'

But the friends will have to wait to find out, asLaPorta will likely not be in the lineup against theTigers. The UF slugger is listed as day-to-day with astrained oblique, an abdomen muscle.

After experiencing some soreness last weekendagainst Miami, he decided to play Wednesday nightagainst Florida A&M. Though LaPorta belted agrand slam against the Rattlers, he was taken out ofthe game after three innings.

"I took [batting practice], and I felt all right, and Iwas like, 'I'll be all right as long as I don't swing andmiss at one,"' LaPorta said. "Sure enough, I swungand missed."

If LaPorta is unable to go, UF coach Pat McMahonwill replace him in the lineup with

-. sophomore Bryson Barber, junior21 Austin Pride or freshman Cody

tga]l Neer, depending on matchups. With or without LaPorta,

tonight's game against No. 12Missouri (4-2) kicks off the Pepsi Baseball Classicfor the Gators, who are hosting the tournament atMcKethan Stadium through Sunday

On Saturday, UF will face Ohio State before play-ing Wake Forest (3-3) on Sunday.

The tournament will provide the Gatora withpreparation for the postseason, McMahon said.

"That, by design, is exactly our intent," he said."The intent for the tournament is kind of twofold. It is also for our great fans to see three outstandingprograms and the University of Florida in a touma-ment environment."

Scherzer, who played with UF catcher BrianJeroloman, shortstop Adam Davis and LaPorta onthe U.S. Junior National Team, is considered one ofthe top pitching prospects in the country by majorleague scouts.

"He's a bulldog on the mound. He's a greatpitcher," said Jeroloman, who caught for Scherzer."The difference between him and other pitchers isthat he has the ability to throw the ball hard in thestrike zone. He can locate his stuff very well. Andthat is why he is on the team - because he can rearback and throw 99 [mph] whenever he wants."

With rain in the forecast, the weather could havea serious impact on the tournament. Should somegames be postponed, travel schedules could make itdifficult to fit in all of them.

Weather permitting, the Gators are also facedwith the challenge of playing three different teamsin three days.

"We're just considering it like a regular week-end," Jeroloman said. "We're playing it Friday-Saturday-Sunday."

WOEN'S BASKETBALL

UFaims to recover against VolsE THE GATORS HAVE LOST 12 CONSECUTIVEGAMES TO NO. 5 TENNESSEE.

By NICK ZACCARDIAlligator Staff Writer

[email protected]

They were on top of the women's college basketballworld for all of 70 hours.

Now they're right back in the middle of the pack.Eoght days after the UF women's basketball team

pulled off the biggest win in school history, defeat-ing then-No. 2 Louisiana State on Senior Night in theO'Connell Center, the Gators again must prove them-selves following a devastating loss.

UF (19-7, 7-6 Southeastern Conference) will travelto play No. 5 Tennessee (24-3, 10-2 SEC) on Sunday ata 3 p.m., for its final game of the regular season.

On Sunday, Auburn, a team that lost to LSU by 27points and currently owns a 4-8 SEC record, defeatedthe visiting Gators, 73-58.

UF learned from that loss and will take hard-earnedlessons into Knoxville.

"We can't take teams for granted, and we have tofight hard for the whole 40 minutes," said guard ShaBrooks, a Jackson, Tenn., native.

With a week to prepare, the Gators claim to beready for Tennessee's level of competition, but endinga 12-game losing streak to the Volunteers will take anear-perfect game.

"We have to play just as well as we played againstLSU," Brooks said. "We can't make a lot of mistakes. We can't turn the ball over. We have to play very wellto beat Tennessee."

UF almost ended the losing skid last year, fallingto the Volunteers 91-82 in overtime at the O'ConnellCenter.

The loss proved to be the highlight of the Gators'season. The final few minutes of regulation in thatgame were projected on a screen for fans at October'sMidnight Madness event, the Gators' season-openingshowcase.

While the Gators could not win the big game lastseason, they have proved that they can this year. UFdefeated then-No. 18 Temple on the road and FloridaState at home during the nonconference season.

Capped by the LSU win, the Gators now have theconfidence that their best game can match or betterTennessee's.

"It made us realize that no matter who we play, wecan win," Brooks said. "No matter what the team is,whether it's LSU or Tennessee."

Against Auburn, UF realized that no matter whichteam it plays, a loss is also possible.

"That focus, and I think that emotional high thatyou get on, it's hard to change gears and get back andget prepared for that next game, no matter who it isthat you play," UF coach Carolyn Peck said. "It's myhope that we've learned from that."

Kim Klement/ AlligatorSha Brooks handles the ball during UF's loss to Geor-gia on Jan. 29. Brooks and the Gators will try to avoida similar fate against No. 5 Tennessee on Sunday.

Morrison leadsteam into SECs

By ALEX WEINTRAUBAlligator Writer

For 10-time All-America Mike Morrison, therewill be unfinished business to attend to at theSoutheastern Conference Indoor Track and FieldChampionship this weekend.

Morrison, the reigning SEC-indoor high jumpchampion, will look to defend his long jump title-aswell as pick up another-in the meet that beginstoday and runs through Sunday at the O'ConnellCenter.

More than 500 of the SEC's best athletes are ex-pected to participate in the meet.

"I want to win both the high and the long [jumps]and place in the 55-meters," Morrison said. "But basi-

cally, I want to do as well as I canfg for the team. I've been plagued at

this meet before, but this year I've

TraCk & Field got it together, so I can win bothmy events."

UF coach Mike Hollowayknows just how important Morrison's success couldbe for the entire team.

"He's our inspirational lead-er," Holloway said."He posts big marks in the long and high jump, andit gets our guys going. He wants to win. He's a com-petitor. When he walks away from an event, he wantsto win it. That's what's great about Mike Morrison."

The UF women will look to rebound from someheavy adversity this season. Injuries and a few earlydefections from last year's team have made this sea-son a tough one for the Gators, who are used to beingranked among the top in the SEC.

"We're going to have to fight hard and have every-one up to compete," UF women's coach Tom Jonessaid. "Everyone's kind of healthy right now. Butunfortunately, you can't make up fitness, and that'swhere we are behind."

But injuries or not, the Gators aren't looking tomake any excuses.

"I've had a couple of hip injuries this year," saidjunior walk-on Candace Cabey. "I got treatment, andI'm doing better. I don't have any injuries right now,and I don't expect it to stop me at the meet."
